Not all mothers are eager to do this, in which case we assist them with a dam, warm cotton towel. The puppies spend the rest of their time sleeping they often seem to be dreaming! This is when their personalities really start coming out! It is so fun to watch them play with the kids and their litter-mates and observe their new fascination with toys. They have become somewhat accustomed to going potty on pee pads so that when they are out running around the room they often recognize them on the floor and will go potty on them. Though they are fast, active, playful little puppies at this point in their lives, they still are like babies and require lots of sleep probably over 18 hours per day and are still quite fragile. Their their third DAPP and 2nd Bordetella vaccinations are given at 12 weeks and then a yearly booster thereafter. The rabies shot can also be given at 12 weeks no later than 16 weeks. They are also regularly de-wormed and given a medication for the prevention of coccidia and giardia. Occasionally we hold onto puppies a little longer if we do not feel they are quite ready to go to their new homes. Our clients are encouraged to come to our home to meet their fur babies if this is feasible. When this is not possible, we arrange for one of our responsible puppy chaperones to hand deliver our puppies to meet their new owners at their nearest major airport. In fact, even as adults they will sleep at least half of the day in a series of long naps, and probably closer to 14 hours per day. Have More Questions? As with most purebreds, French Bulldogs have in-built health issues. This causes some major problems when it comes to giving birth, and special care is needed if you are to avoid the pitfalls and dangers ahead. The mother needs to be given medication to let her body know that her babies have been born, as the natural hormones would not have been released. She may not bite through the birth sacs or the umbilical cords, so you should be prepared to help out here. Special DAP Dog Appeasing Pheremone collars are often used to combat the problem of mother dogs not bonding with their puppies, usually starting several days before the C-section. However, the owner or breeder should be fully prepared to step in and take over the job of caring for these tiny bundles of joy. They will need all the help and love you can give them. Some breeders and owners prefer to allow a natural birth, despite the risks. Being Prepared Preparation is key to the safe and successful delivery of the puppies. It pays to have everything on standby in case the mother begins to whelp before the scheduled C-section appointment. Although the date can be predicted pretty accurately, the time can be out by about 24 hours. However gentle they usually are, they might snap at little hands that get too close. Plastic whelping boxes are lightweight and easier to keep clean than wooden ones, which can harbor parasites and germs. Make sure the box is large enough for the mother to stretch out but small enough to keep her precious puppies close, with easy access for her to get out without the puppies escaping. If at any time she becomes distressed, or things go wrong, call for help immediately, or both she and her Frenchie baby could be at serious risk of death. Clean up the area as much as you can without disturbing them, and leave them to it. But your work, in some senses, has only just begun! Caring For A Newborn French Bulldog Whether whelped at home or delivered by C-section, both mom and her new babies will need your help. One new puppy is a challenge. You might have two, three, or more, plus their tired mom to look after! However, in some cases, the mother may not naturally take to feeding. This can be a problem when the birth has not been natural. If you need to step in, ready-made puppy formula is available, or you may wish to make your own. Allow enough flow to let them feed easily without it overflowing around their mouth and nose. For the first week, they need to be fed every two hours. This can be extended to three or four hours in the second week, especially if they look healthy and are a good size. Potty Training Like any newborn baby, they will look to their mother for guidance, but you will most likely have to lend a hand. They will not poop or pee of their own accord, and mom has to stimulate this action by licking them. After this, you will obviously have to clean them up. If they are feeding naturally from mom, they will be getting the nutrition they need and protection in the form of antibodies to help fight infection. Development They will need to nurse or be fed formula for about three to four weeks before weaning. By this time, they will have changed significantly. When born, and for the first week, they are blind, deaf, and only able to move by wriggling. They will also react to sound even though their ears are just starting to open. Spayed animals do very rarely develop pyometra in the uterine stump. Even so, ovariohysterectomy is currently considered the most effective and safest treatment. It is thus, a very important disease to be aware of for any dog or cat owner because of the sudden nature of the disease and the deadly consequences if left untreated. While it is observed that this condition may occur in any dog regardless of age and mating history, it is more common in bitches that have not whelped even once throughout their life nulliparous. Therefore, after a proper discussion and consultation with scientific literature, we decided to allow our French bulldog to mate with a healthy adult male of the same breed. Little did we know what was in store for us in the next few months to come. Our dog conceived successfully and started showing some symptoms of gestation such as gradual enlargement of abdomen, quick exhaustion, reluctance to run or play, enlargement of mammary glands, etc. However, she lost her appetite abruptly and refused to eat her meals about two weeks into her pregnancy. As her abdomen rapidly grew in size, her appetite reduced alarmingly. To manage the issue, she was given appetite inducers, liver supplements and shifting of meal ingredients from fish, to egg, to chicken, to pork alternatively, in an attempt to spark her interest. She ate almost nothing. There was gradual loss of condition as her abdomen distended significantly. At merely 30 days of gestation, her general appearance was of a bitch at full term. A general abdominal ultrasound was conducted on the 40th day of gestation and roughly 7 puppies were observed even though the number could be greater since unlike X-ray, the number of foetuses cannot accurately be determined using ultrasonography and we were unwilling to conduct radiography due to radiation hazard. She instead preferred to sit close to walls and furniture and lean for support, thus keeping her thorax elevated than her abdomen to reduce pressure on her diaphragm while breathing. There were a couple of concerns we were ailed with. Since French bulldogs are known to have a narrow pelvic girdle and foetal head size is typically large, normal parturition could lead to lodgement of the head of the foetus in her birth canal leading to dystocia. This is why being a veterinary surgeon; I had made all preparations for a caesarean section. Additionally, on an average, French bulldogs have no more than 5 puppies per litter but in the case of my dog Paris, her litter size appeared considerably larger upon ultrasonography, which could be correlated with her abnormally distended abdomen. On the 58th day of gestation, she displayed vivid signs of labour such as nesting, restlessness, panting and straining. We were alarmed due to her pre-term parturition since there were still days of pregnancy remaining. At pm in the winter evening she delivered her first puppy via normal parturition without incident and continued to deliver 8 more over the next 7 hours and delivered a total of 9 puppies of which one was still-born. It was severely cold and raining outside. She displayed admirable maternal instinct and licked away the foetal membranes from all the puppies enabling them to breathe and stimulated them by licking their faces and bodies until the pups let out their first cries. The puppies were cleaned and stimulated further by rubbing gently with sterile absorbant cotton. Unlike most other breeds of dogs, Paris readily allowed us to handle and care for her pups, trusting us completely to keep them safe. On the first two nights, the puppies were allowed to remain with the mother however; we lost another pup as a result of crushing injury inflicted due to her lack of experience. It was then decided to undertake human intervention so as to ensure the safety of the remaining 7 puppies and avoid such accidents in the future. On the 4th night however, the mother managed to get into the basket housing her puppies, reached in with her mouth and carried out one puppy then took her to her bed. The puppy was licked thoroughly by the mother and was only discovered approximately 4 hours after the incident. By then the puppy was hypothermic and dehydrated. Due to severe dehydration and subsequent hypoglycaemia, she was very weak, unable to suckle milk and twitched in frequent intervals. Intensive care was initiated immediately and the puppy was separated from the rest, kept constantly warm at 39 degrees Celsius, fed artificial milk in intervals of 1 hour. However, not much improvement could be observed. After repeating the procedure thrice, she visibly regained strength and began suckling on the finger showing intent. I continued to feed her the milk replacer at 1 hour intervals and 0. This is an essential step since most puppies at neonatal stage are unable to void faeces and urine independently and require stimulation from the mother by licking or artificially using soaked cotton balls. In the case of Paris, she would tend to lick using excessive pressure perhaps due to her overwhelming maternal instinct, which is why we had to deter her from doing so and took charge of the issue ourselves. From the 4th week, feeding was repeated at 4 hour intervals and subsequently increased to 6 hours at the age of 6 weeks. They are currently 12 weeks old and in the past couple of months, I have put my theoretical knowledge on neonatal care of puppies into practical application. General status of health could be assessed by observing faecal consistency and frequency. Neonates void yellow or brown semi-solid faeces with a seedy appearance at intervals of 2 to 3 hours. Faeces solidify gradually and take the form of small boli in healthy puppies without gastrointestinal ailments and having sufficient hydration. Anaemia was assessed by colour and dryness of the oral mucous membranes, dehydration could be assessed by pulling the skin on the back using thumb and index finger as well as the colour of urine. Healthy puppies void clear, colourless to slightly yellow urine, and dehydrated puppies have dark yellow urine voided in scanty quantities. The first two weeks are very crucial since the puppies were prone to hypothermia and hypoglycaemia if optimal room temperature and feeding schedule is not carefully maintained. Methylcellulose eye drops were instilled at 6 hour intervals for one week to prevent corneal desiccation. The mother resumed feed consumption the morning after her delivery. Her diet was supplemented with multi-mineral and multivitamin syrup Multistar Pet and calcium chew tablets Drools to help her regain optimal health as well as to sustain the high nutritional requirements during lactation. Proper care will help keep guard against infection, which can be problem for this breed. Dirt, debris and excess wax can lead to ongoing infections. It is important to note that an owner will want to clean the ears enough…but not too much. Because doing this too often can cause dry skin issues ; too much wax removal a certain amount is normal and needed, as it catches dirt and debris …and over doing it can cause yeast infections. If it is red, has any sores or shows any signs of irritation this often points to infection, mites or another issue that must be brought to the attention of the veterinarian. The answer is that it is not normal. Excess wax and therefore excess debris within it or an ear infection mites, yeast, bacterial can cause a strong, bad odor. Therefore, if your Pug has smelly ears, you will want to perform a cleaning and then if the situation does not clear up, it will be time to bring your Pug to the veterinarian. It only takes a minute and can be part of your daily routine to catch any issues early. You will want to check for the above mentioned coloring and the above mentioned possible odor. They should feel warm, and not hot, to the touch. Regular ear cleanings can do wonders to keep those little ears healthy. It is important to use the proper solution and not simply use water. Also,despite what you may have read elsewhere, please never use rubbing alcohol, as it will dry out the ears too much, causing problems. Use a chemical-free, all-natural product that is super gentle yet effective. Our favorite pug ear cleaners for Momo are these ear cleaning wipes and this pug ear cleaning solution. Peroxide is not safe for use on pug ears, Alcohol will sting pug ears, and water creates a moist environment. Ideally you will use a non0irritating ph balanced cleaner with a drying agent. Simply gently press your fingers toward each other. Do this times. This means that the solution is working to break up hard, compacted wax…so it is a good sign. Do not worry if you do not hear this, as it will just mean that the ear is clean in regard to excess buildup. You will place your finger in the middle of the rolled cotton in order to keep it firm and get it to where you need for it to be. Entering no more than 2 inches, you will rotate it around several times and then remove it. The solution that you just massaged in helped to loosen compacted wax and dirt. The color of the debris that you clean up may be anywhere from a yellow to a dark brown. You will want to repeat the above steps with each ear… You will be done when the cotton is clean when you remove it. Of course with any pug ear problem there is the chance that they could lose their hearing early. Not all pug hearing problems are permanent. You can also do a simple pug hearing test at home if you think something might be funny with their ears. Do they hear commands? Some are extremely stubborn this way! But most good pugs will come when you call them. If you think your pug is paying less attention to their name or to words like Food or Treats, you might want to try the pug hearing test below. A pug who is usually super behaved might suddenly stop listening or need to focus more to do normal activities. Do they startle easier when something sneaks up on them or a new person appears in the house? This could be another sign that your pug is losing their hearing. I know when Momo barks its hard for us to even hear ourselves think! Though it could also mean that their hearing is slowly deteriorating. Then they might have a yeast infection in there! Pugs are prone to yeast infections. Outer ear yeast infections in pugs is super easy to spot. Rubbing their ears is the first clue, then give a peak under those velvety flaps and you will see some waxy residue and scabbing around the opening. Because of the L shape of your pugs ear canal, it can be susceptible to yeast growing and having allergies stuck in there which could lead to even worse pug dog ear infections. If you see any issues with your pugs ears, its a good idea to head straight to the vet because it could be a slew of more dangerous issues. Pug Ears Overview Pugs are a very unique breed that has very interesting ears; they are one of the standout features of this amazing toy breed dog. There should be routine cleaning to keep the ears clean and free of odors. And, even so, ear infections can develop which can cause intense itching and discomfort. Pug Ear Care and Cleaning - The important steps of keeping your Pug's ear flaps, outer ear canals, and inner ear canals clean for both hygiene and prevention of infections. Pug Ear Odor - The types of smells that may stem from the ears and what these may mean. Pug Ear Infections - Signs, causes, and treatment of bacterial, yeast, and mite ear infections. Types of Pug Ears While there are variations of the Pug ear and each dog will have his own unique look, one element is clear with this breed: The ear is a folded ear, meaning that it rises and then flaps over itself. The differences in Pug ears are the angle in which it folds and the distance from the ear tip to the side of the face. Let's take a look at examples of the various types of ears a Pug can have: The button ear The button ear on a Pug is one in which the ear folds forward, pointing toward the outer corner of the eye, and lying against the face. The outer ear canal is fully covered. This is the preferred ear shape in conformation shows. The rose ear The rose ear on a Pug is similar to the button ear in that it folds over, but the major difference is that the ear has a softer fold in which the ear stands out a bit and does not lie against the Pug's face. The burr on a Pug is the section of cartilage that forms a small bump on the outer ear canal and this shows with the rose ear. This ear shape is accepted, but not preferred, in the show ring. The fly ear The fly ear, also known as the rose flying ear, is considered a fault with the Pug breed. The ear just barely folds and the flaps extend far from the Pug's face. Though there is nothing wrong with a pet Pug having this type of ear set, this is a genetic trait that can be passed down and for this reason Pugs with flying ears should not be in breeding programs. However, if a Pug puppy has ears that stand out a bit rose ears these can eventually fall down to lie against the face button ears. And, if a Pug puppy has ears that really stand out far from the face flying ears , there is a chance that they may settle down to just expose the burr rose ears. This, however, is by no means a guarantee. You may notice the ears changing during the first 9 months, most obvious during the teething phase which can temporarily affect the ear set due to a connection from nerves in the jaw to muscles in the ear base. Coloring on the ears seen at a young age is also a strong indicator of what to expect once a Pug becomes an adult. However, there can be changes with this as well. So, typically, the ear set and ear color on a Pug puppy will let you know what to expect in general, yet there can be some changes during the first year. Final adult set and color is in place by the one-year mark. Ear set on a Pug, like other physical features, is genetic. Sort of cosmetic surgery, there is no method that owners can do to change the ear set on a Pug. You may have heard about taping which is a method literally using tape to hold a puppy's ears into a desired position in the hopes that they will eventually stay that way. But, this rarely produces any visibly noticeable results and can be quite time consuming and frustrating for both owner and dog. If your Pug's ears are not what you expected them to be, remember that every dog is beautiful and unique in their own way. The only time that ear set truly matters is if you plan to enter your Pug into conformation shows or a breeding program. This is done for hygiene purposes to remove dirt, debris, excess wax, and possible related odors as well as health to help prevent ear infections. Cleaning the ears involves two different aspects: Ear flaps and outer ear canal - Anything on the inner ear flaps or outer ear canal including moisture and fine particle debris can make its way deep into a Pug's inner ear canal which can eventually lead to issues including infection. So, for this, routinely use a wipe to clean the entire inner flap and outer ear canal as far as you can comfortably reach in. This is typically done once per week. If your Pug has had problems with reoccurring ear infections, the veterinarian may instruct you to do this every other day. A recommended ear wipe for Pugs is PPP Pet Aroma Care Ear Wipes ; these are small textured ear specialty wipes with both aloe vera and eucalyptus that works very well to clean the ear area and leave a nice fresh scent. Inner ear canal - Even if you work to keep your Pug's ear flaps and outer canals clean, the inner ear canals should be cleaned every so often. This will help break up thick clumps of excess ear wax, flush the ears of fine debris, and dry up any excess moisture. For regular maintenance, this is generally done every 6 weeks. If a Pug has a history of ear infections, the veterinarian may instruct you to do this as often as once per week. Instructions for cleaning a Pug's ear canals are as so: Clean one ear at a time Use one hand to lift the ear flap. Use your other hand to place several drops of ear solution into the ear canal for exact number of drops, follow the instructions on the label Massage the base of the ear by placing your thumb on one side of your Pug's ear and your forefinger on the other side. Press your fingers toward each other and slowly move them around. You may hear swashing sounds as you move the solution around. Massage for 2 to 3 minutes. Use a piece of sterile gauze, ear wipes, or cotton balls to thoroughly clear off anything that has come up and onto the outer ear canal. Tip: Do not be surprised at what you may see as you clean up the gunk that comes out. The color of the matter can range from yellow to dark brown and may contain any number of colored specks including green and black. A recommended ear cleanser for Pugs is Virbac Epi-Otic Advanced Ear Cleaner which is a non-alcohol formula no stinging that works exceptionally well to break up wax, lift up debris, and dry any inner moisture. Pug Ear Odor A mild odor coming from the ears may simply be a sign that it's time to clear out the ear canals of accumulated ear wax and other matter that are clogging the canals. This can be done using the method as previously described under ' Pug Ear Care and Cleaning '. However, a very strong pungent odor from the ears is a sign of an ear infection. This may be a musty, yeasty, or moldy smell. In many cases this will require a medicated ear treatment and this is what will be covered next. Pug Ear Infections Ear infections are very common with dogs; in fact, this is one of the top reasons for sick visits to the veterinarian. There are several types of ear infections that can develop including yeast, bacterial, and mites. Causes: There are several possible causes of ear infections with Pugs including chronically dirty ears and moisture in the ears. Yeast infections may also occur due to immune system response, often seen alongside different types of allergies. Symptoms: Signs of an ear infection include one or more of the following: Itchiness a dog may scratch at the ears or rub his head into different surfaces Head shaking Red, irritated outer ear canal Discharge Black or red crumbly specks see with ear mites Treatment: If you are not sure if your Pug has an ear infection, are not sure of the exact type, if home remedy methods have not produced results, or if you do not feel confident treating an ear infection from home, it is recommended to bring your puppy or dog to the veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment. The ears will be examined and a sample from the inner ear canal may be taken to determine the exact type of infection. Both topical treatments and oral medications may be given depending on whether the problem is a bacterial, yeast, or mite infection. This said, some acute ear infections can be treated at home.
