Tiny portions of canned, wet foods are introduced. Meals per day: 4 or more Puppies should stay with their mom for to keep them healthy. Nutrition Warning! At 8-weeks-old a GSD pup is eating more solid foods and develops a better appetite for kibble and other foods. Add in only a couple of small spoonfuls of canned plain pumpkin, unsweetened Greek yogurt, or cooked oatmeal to entice your pup to eat. Meals per day: 4 Week-Old Puppy Continue feeding the same as the 8-week-old diet. Treats are not only enjoyable for your German Shepherd, but help you to eneterain and build a positive relationship with him. Be sure to keep their zoomies under control by playing plenty of fun German Shepherd games for puppies. Meals per day: 4 Week-Old Puppy Continue to feed the kibble. Watch for excessive weight gain during this growth time as their bones cannot take extra weight! Too much weight gain too quickly can cause joint issues as an adult and prevent healthy development. Use their mental energy to help keep them more relaxed throughout the day by playing brain-boosting mind games for German Shepherd puppies. Meals per day: 3 to 4 Week-Old Puppy Keep your puppy trim and athletic by monitoring how much you feed your puppy and their body condition. You can write how much they eat and track this over time, and adjust how much your feed your German Shepherd puppy to keep them at a healthy weight. Try using fresh, raw, cut-up pieces of carrots as healthy treats or small, deseeded cubes of fresh apple as part of their training treats. Keep your eyes open for a growth spurt about to begin! Meals per day: 3 Week-Old Puppy Around 4 months old, you might notice your puppy finish their meal quickly and look for more food. Be sure to watch how many treats you give them throughout the day. You can do this by holding them safely in your arms and weighing them with you on the scale. Then, place them on the floor and step onto the scale without them to weigh yourself. Remember, around 16 to weeks old your German Shepherd puppy begins to rapidly grow. Instead, when looking overhead at your puppy their waist should look trim and not rounded outwards. German Shepherd puppies should appear sleek in their waistline. Meals per day: 3 Week And Older Puppy Continue to feed your German Shepherd puppy dry kibble with a small amount of healthy foods mixed in. You can lessen the healthy food you mix in gradually if you prefer. But, even as adults, German Shepherds love a bit of tasty toppers on their kibble. Around a year old, begin feeding your German Shepherd puppy 2 meals a day. Two meals, one in the morning and evening, are not only safer but also provide your German Shepherd with sustained energy to fuel their high-energy lifestyle. You can create a positive meal time by using the following tips: Always offer fresh water during their meal times. Keep the area where they eat their food in calm and out of the way of the family hustle and bustle. I found sitting with a book reading, just keeping my GSD puppy company, encouraged my dog to eat their meals while giving us time to quietly bond. Feed your German Shepherd at the same time everyday. The best time to feed a German Shepherd puppy is in the morning, before you leave for the day, and in the evening, about 2 hours before you put your dog to bed. Allow them to potty after eating to ensure their comfort. Your dog also needs to eat at other times of the day for their health and growth. How much you should feed a German Shepherd puppy really depends on a number of factors. Your GSD pup should eat enough to maintain their growth and energy, while not carrying any extra fat. Every dog is different. Keep in mind the number of calories in the kibble, which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Each puppy food company has a different amount of calories and size of the kibble. Here are a few things that might affect how much your German Shepherd puppy should eat. The more active a German Shepherd puppy is, the more calories he needs to eat to replace lost energy. For example, puppies need nearly twice the amount of calories as compared to adults. And older or senior German Shepherds who are less active need less food. Health Maintaining a healthy weight is essential to feeding your German Shepherd. Simply put, you can prevent some medical conditions and health problems by monitoring their waistlines. Instead follow the healthy way to bulk up a German Shepherd. To see if your German Shepherd is at the right weight you can find the average weight depending on their age. German Shepherd care German Shepherd puppy diet: newborn For a German Shepherd puppy to develop and grow properly, it is imperative that they first nurse on their mother's milk. The first milk they receive is a protein and antibody-rich type of milk known as colostrum. This gives the puppy's immune and central nervous systems a boost. They then progress on to regular breast milk. Puppies will nurse for at least 6 to 8 weeks, gradually being weaned on to solid food at about 4 weeks. If, for any reason, the puppy cannot suckle its mother, don't give them cow or goat milk. These milks are very poor quality in comparison to a puppy's mother's milk. If your German shepherd puppy has to be prematurely weaned, a veterinarian will be able to prescribe specific infant formula and establish the appropriate dosage for your puppy. For example, a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd should not be fed the same food. This is because hese breeds have different nutritional needs. Take a look here to find out more about the diet for a prematurely weaned puppy. German Shepherd puppy diet: 1 month old From 3 to 4 weeks old, when it comes to feeding a German Shepherd puppy, we should start by letting them taste new foods and flavors. At this stage, the German Shepherd puppy's diet plan requires them to eat a special wet food for puppies. At around 6 to 8 weeks old, a German Shepherd puppy should be given a little dry dog food with water, or unseasoned chicken stock between nursing sessions. From their eighth week onward, a German Shepherd should be weaned and start feeding on solid food with a special puppy feed. The best dog food for a German Shepherd puppy is breed specific, but this may not be available everywhere. In these cases, your veterinarian can create a proper food plan for your German Shepherd puppy. At this stage, milk must be removed from the puppy's diet as it could cause diarrhea. If by any chance your dog or puppy is suffering from a bad stomach, we recommend taking a look at our article on what to do if yourt dog has diarrhea. In addition, it is vital that puppies have constant access to clean fresh water. German Shepherd puppy diet: 2 months old At two months of age, you can start to slowly decrease the moistening of your German Shepherd's dry food. Eventually, the puppy will be used to eating the food completely dry. Following the German Shepherd puppy food chart, from 2 until 4 months old, a puppy will eat 4 or 5 times a day. This has to be carried out with one very important addition: discipline. A puppy needs to learn that it will not be fed constantly throughout the day, but at specific times. We start of by placing a bowl of food down for 10 minutes, this should give the puppy enough time to finish its meal. After 10 minutes, we suggest taking the bowl of food away, even if your puppy hasn't finished eating. A puppy's food bowl must only be available to the dog for 10 minutes. This 10 minutes should be enough time for the puppy to eat all of its provided food. As already mentioned, after 10 minutes, you should take the food bowl away, even if the puppy hasn't finished eating. This pattern will introduce the puppy's food schedule and allow it an opportunity to become accustomed to particular feeding times. Accepting and adapting to a diet plan is very important for a puppy's intellectual development. It also facilitates more complex and demanding training sessions. Food for German shepherd puppies should be higher in calories, fats, proteins and calcium than adult German Shepherd dog food. This is because puppies are still growing and developing and therefore need better nutrition. German Shepherd puppy diet: food plan after 4 months Between 4 and 6 months of age, the number of meals which we have detailed in our German Shepherd puppy food chart should be reduced to 3 a day. The food quantity should be increased and an extra margin of 2 minutes to eat should be provided. The packaging of quality commercial dog food will detail the appropriate suggested amount of food for the puppy, depending on its age and weight. If you have any doubts, consult your veterinarian. You should eventually start mixing fresh food, such as meat, fish or vegetables, with the commercial dry feed. Beware of forbidden foods for dogs. Some people ask about a raw diet for a German shepherd puppy, but we recommend these such foods should always be cooked and never given to a dog raw. Meanwhile, treats for dogs should only be used as positive reinforcement during their training and learning period, never as a food supplement. Under no circumstances should you give your German Shepherd, or any dog, human food leftovers. Human food contains salt, sugar and seasoning contents which are very harmful to a dog's health. In addition, if you do offer your dog your food, it will pester you during meals [1]. For more, take a look at some of the harmful effects of treating a dog like a human. German Shepherd puppy diet: after 6 months When your German Shepherd puppy reaches 6 months of age, its daily food intake should be reduced to twice a day. When we do this we can increase the food portions and eating time accordingly. Our German Shepherd diet chart below should be taken into account depending on the age, lifestyle and size of your German Shepherd puppy. After 6 months, you should give your German Shepherd puppy shatterproof bones, such as beef, to gnaw on. For more, take a look here for more about; Bones For Puppies. German shepherd puppy: Dog food and water bowl hygiene Your puppy's food and drink containers should always be clean. Hygiene is very important in order to prevent the appearance of insects. If you notice that your puppy has not eaten for three consecutive meals, consult your veterinarian immediately. This lack of appetite in a puppy could be caused by bowel obstruction and stomach pain; due to the ingestion of toxic food etc. Don't forget that puppies are very sensitive and fragile and if you ignoring any symptoms of disease, it can result in severe issues or even puppy fatality. German Shepherd care German Shepherd puppies should be socialized and trained to live with you from day one. These dogs are incredibly capable and have the ability, if trained properly, to learn tricks and perform activities [2]. In addition to the diet of a German Shepherd, don't forget the importance of preventative medicines, following the appropriate vaccination schedules and general German Shepherd dog care. For more information about your German shepherd, take a look at.So, how many times a day should you feed your German Shepherd? German Shepherds should be fed at least twice a day. Vets recommend two smaller meals instead of one large meal for healthy digestion and energy. For puppies, feed 4 meals a day up to three months old, then 3 meals a day up to six months old, before finally reducing to 2 meals a day. It is essential to stick to food schedules that are consistent for the long-term health of your German Shepherd, especially as the breed is prone to the life-threatening condition, Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus GDV , commonly known as bloat. This article will cover how often to feed a German Shepherd whether puppy or adult and how much to give your dog to keep him healthy and happy. Hey there! My German Shepherd Willow eating her meal Hey! As a working breed raised to herd and protect sheep, they are typically energetic, enjoy physical activity, and love having a job to do. Due to their dynamic character, they demand a high-energy diet. However, as large, deep-chested dogs, they are one of the breeds prone to bloat GDV , and vets advise against feeding one large meal a day. Twice per day is the standard, with a good few hours in between, as it allows your GSD to eat and digest his food properly. German Shepherds, like most dogs, work well when fed on a schedule. I absolutely agree with this, especially as the German Shepherd is susceptible to a sensitive stomach and is known to have more digestive problems than other breeds. However, if you have any concerns, you should speak to your vet. If you have a high-energy or working German Shepherd, such as a guard dog, assistance dog, or Police or Military dog that gets a lot of exercise, you may consider feeding little and often to prevent hunger. German Shepherd Puppy Feeding Schedule German Shepherd puppies will require more frequent feedings as they expend far more energy and have smaller stomachs to hold their food. You should feed a German Shepherd puppy four meals a day between 6 and 12 weeks old. Puppies aged between 12 and 24 weeks should have three meals a day, and from 24 weeks onwards, German Shepherd puppies should be fed twice per day. Age of Puppy. Growth and weight The German Shepherd puppy is a popular addition to many households. Sometimes called the Alsatian puppy, the German Shepherd was initially developed for herding and now commonly used as a working dog or pet. This is your guide to providing all the nutrients your new puppy needs. When Your Puppy Comes Home Although they look pretty sturdy at eight weeks old, German Shepherd puppies are vulnerable to tummy upsets when they arrive at a new home. To help them settle in stick with the food their breeder was giving them for the first two weeks minimum. You can then gradually swap over by increasing proportions over the course of a couple of days. However, if they are doing well on their original food, considering sticking with it for longer. To begin with follow the guidelines provided by the breeder, the feed manufacturer or by your veterinarian. This will vary depending on how calorie dense the food is and how it is formulated. Your puppy should be fed four times a day up to the age of four months. After this age, two larger meals at regular times will be sufficient. However, the more often you feed your pup the stronger your bond will grow. Simple sits and recalls, puppy tricks, they all make a big difference to how your dog behaves towards you and feels about you as they grow. What to Feed A German Shepherd Puppy You will find there are a lot of different opinions about what kind of food is best. Kibble and wet food are the most popular, but you do also have the option of raw or homemade meals. Puppy Kibble Great quality, high meat content kibble is my go-to for feeding larger puppy breeds. At the beginning of the day I measure out their daily food amount, then separate it into little pots. Some as meals, and the remainder to use throughout the day to reward good behavior or get off on the right foot with positive reinforcement. The FDA recently issued a notice alerting dog owners to a potential increased risk of a serious heart condition. This is called canine dilated cardiomyopathy DCM. The risk is in dogs eating foods that include peas, lentils, or potatoes instead of grains. The underlying cause of these cases is not clear, but the FDA note suggests that caution should be used in selecting foods with these ingredients for German Shepherds and other large dogs. Canned Dog Food For picky eaters canned food can be more appealing. It smells stronger, and debatably tastes nicer. These diets do not include cooked or otherwise processed foods. However, it may be more difficult to regulate a BARF diet to ensure a slow and steady growth rate in young puppies. If you find this option intriguing, you can check out our article on feeding your dog a raw diet. Homemade Diets Research has shown that in the past, poorly balanced homemade diets have been harmful to German Shepherd puppies. There is now abundant information available to anyone who is willing and able to produce a safe and balanced diet. However, modern cases studies have shown that well-meaning owners may still over-feed or create an unbalanced diet. So, this is an area where you really can have too much of a good thing. As with commercial foods, homemade diets must be properly formulated for a large breed dog. Do not deviate from recommended recipes as provided by a veterinarian. If possible, preferably a vet with a board certification in veterinary nutrition. Recipes published in popular magazine and websites may not be nutritionally complete or suitable for a large breed puppy. Is My Puppy the Right Weight? You can also refer to German Shepherd puppy growth charts to see if you puppy is gaining weight and within the normal range. However, keep in mind that some dogs will be unusually small or large but still be perfectly healthy. Do not try to maximize growth rates as this can lead to health problems later. Ensure that you are familiar with how to assess the body condition of your puppy. The ribs and spine should be easy to feel but not simple to see. My Puppy Is Still Hungry If your puppy seems excessively hungry provide more frequent but smaller meals. Young puppies cannot tolerate going without food for extended periods. With older puppies you may wish to experiment with foods that help them feel more full, and provide low calories treats. Keeping a health puppy active and occupied will help prevent them from becoming overly focused on anticipating their next meal. Split that daily amount up between all meals. For example, if your 3-month-old GSD puppy is a male and weighs 30 pounds, you should feed him approximately 2 cups per day. Since she no longer needs the extra calories to help support her fast growth period, you can safely reduce her feedings to 2 or 3 meals per day. While she should still be eating puppy food at this point, you may consider purchasing a bag of her eventual adult formula. You can use individual kibbles from the adult formula for treats or training rewards. This will help her get used to the new flavor and texture. Around 9 months of age, you can begin slowly adding a small amount of the adult formula into her puppy food, though she should still be eating primarily puppy chow. Only your vet will be able to tell you when your dog has reached maturity and can be safely moved to adult food. So, make sure you are in close contact with your vet to be sure that your feeding plan is individualized for your specific dog. Adult dog food will have a different ratio of calcium, protein, phosphorus, and other nutrients than puppy food does. Feeding an adult dog a puppy formula can cause obesity as well as put too much strain on kidneys and other vital organs. Long term use of inappropriate food for an adult dog can have catastrophic consequences. That said, there is no need to panic if your adult GSD eats a bowl of puppy food now and then. Adult German Shepherds should be fed twice a day. Again, bloat is a real problem for large breed dogs, and large meals seem to be a big cause of this. I feed my adult dogs this particular blend for a number of reasons. The blend is designed specifically with German Shepherds in mind, as it uses high-quality, animal-based nutrients to counter the extra stress put on the joints of GSDs and to help the development strong lean muscle to keep your dog in peak physical condition. You really can see the difference. This is evident by the fast decline in health, joint flexibility, and energy in older large breed dogs compared to same-age smaller breeds. When your GSD moves from the adult life stage to senior, you need to adjust her diet. Large breeds reach the older stage not quite senior, but close around half of their assumed life expectancy. Inevitably, your GSD will need to switch over to a senior diet. Older large breed dogs have lower energy needs. Older dogs also tend to slow down their digestion, so an increase in fiber might be a good choice for your senior GSD. Do be sure to confirm this with your vet, however. Not all foods are created equal. For treats, senior dogs should avoid calorie-dense milk bones and high-salt or fatty treats. Opt for healthy, whole-food treats such as apple slices or carrots. Some senior dogs begin to develop health conditions that will require special care. This is often a result of poor nutrition early in life, but can sometimes simply be genetics and old age catching up with them. But for GSDs with health issues such as kidney disease and joint pain, diet can play an even bigger role in the quality of their lives. Getting a personalized recommendation from your veterinarian is worth the time, expense, and effort. These charts can seem pretty straightforward at first glance. Instead, use them as a starting point. Observe your dog, see how he looks and feels, and note any changes in his bathroom habits, weight, or energy level. Adjust his meals accordingly. Generally speaking, they talk about daily intake, not per meal. It means to split that 3 cups total over the entire day. If your dog eats 3 times per day, that would be 1 cup at each meal for a total daily intake of 3 cups. To further confuse dog parents, some manufacturers do list per-meal serving sizes, not the total daily intake! In these cases, if you read it incorrectly, you would end up underfeeding your dog. To help mitigate some of this confusion, it may be helpful to ask your vet how many calories your dog should be consuming each day. Then you can check the calorie content in the dog food and measure things from there. Raw Diets, Cooking for Dogs, and Other Alternative Feeding This article has been focusing mainly on commercially available dry kibble since that is what most pet parents ultimately choose for their dogs. However, there are many dog owners that choose to feed alternative diets. These include raw diets and cooking regular people food for dogs. There are many viable options for feeding your healthy German Shepherd, but there are just as many harmful fads, too. As with commercial foods, be sure to speak with your vet before starting your dog on a raw diet or home-cooking her meals. Human supplements are often unregulated, minimally effective, and often contain substances harmful to animals. Never use a human supplement for your German Shepherd. Final Thoughts What you feed your German Shepherd is just as important as how much you feed them. Pay special attention to the first 4 or 5 ingredients listed on the back of the packaging. Choose high-quality, safety-tested foods with clear ingredient and nutrition labels.
Bulldog Spotlight Gordon James I joined rescue because my family became overwhelmed with five kids and life, plain and simply. I decided I was ready to go because we were in an apartment and every day, it was getting smaller and smaller and smaller. My family loved me, but sometimes, love is not enough because I can hardly breathe. We are dedicated to saving and re-homing Bulldogs so they can have the healthy, happy lives they truly deserve. The group has been dedicated to the breed since , as a component of Lone Star Bulldog Club. Lone Star Bulldog Club Rescue accepts Bulldogs from owners who can no longer keep them, as well as retrieves Bulldogs from shelters and other undesirable situations. Each Bulldog in the program is lovingly cared for in a foster home until the perfect forever family for that specific dog is found. Every Bulldog is different: personality, temperament, energy, comfort with kids and other animals, medical needs and more. We take all these factors into consideration when making a forever-home match. Adoption is a coordinated process between the coordinators, fosters and applicant. We work together with our knowledge of the dog to find the best home. When you apply, you might have a particular dog in mind. But please understand, that dog may already be in the process of being adopted by an approved family who has been waiting weeks to be matched with the right dog. But they would prefer to be the only thing with fur in their home. They still make a wonderful companion and deserve a loving home. For your convenience, they have been designated as Forever Single on our website. If you plan on only having one dog, we hope you will consider one of these. Since most of our volunteers live in the North Texas area, it is easier on us and the applying family if they live in this area. Because of this, our out-of-state adoptions are incredibly rare and only in neighboring states. If you are ready to submit your adoption application, please complete the Adopt A Bulldog Application. A volunteer will then review your application. This process can take some time, and not every home is a suitable home for a Bulldog, so please be patient. You are not buying a dog. Most are moderately friendly toward strangers. Although some can be aggressive with strange dogs, the breed is quite good with other pets. Upkeep The Bulldog appreciates a daily outing but cannot tolerate hot humid weather, which can be deadly. He should not be expected to jog or walk great distances, or to jump from any heights. Most Bulldogs cannot swim. Most Bulldogs wheeze and snore, and some drool. Coat care is minimal, but facial wrinkles and any folds around the tail should be cleaned daily. Special precautions must be taken when anesthetizing a Bulldog. Caesarean deliveries are commonly needed. Hip radiographs show most Bulldogs to be dysplastic but few show overt symptoms. History With the most distinctive mug in dogdom, the Bulldog has an equally distinctive history. Some Bulldogs were also set against bears for bear baiting, purely for entertainment. In , bull baiting was outlawed, and a new phase began for the Bulldog. By all rights, the breed should have become extinct, except that it had gained so many ardent admirers that they set out to rescue the Bulldog by selecting against ferocity while still maintaining—and often accentuating—its distinctive physical characteristics. Its tough steadfast persona led it to be identified as a national symbol of England. Its amiable clownish personality belies its appearance, and the Bulldog is a popular pet. Related Content.

How to buy a puppy Call us on the phone first .Learn More A french bulldog puppy at 10 days old. Breeding Program We are passionate about providing the consumer with a dog that is bred with integrity for health and beauty. Marika Zoll is a Ph. Simply talking to her you will learn what to watch out for. We sleep with them and eat with them. Well, nearly. The point is that we are not just Breeding dogs. We had the dogs first and then we fell in love with the breed. Is it part English Bulldog, or Pug or some Terrier? Little is noted in the development of its history no one knows exactly how the French bulldog came into being because very poor records were kept we know we know the most basic facts such as that there were Normandy immigrants coming from France to England that brought these dogs with them around the s. Those immigrants were lace workers that had been living in the farming communities of northern friends which is where they were a rich initially discovered but when those lace workers move to France they brought the dogs with them and had a tremendous reception of the French people because of their petite size versus other extremely strong almost big dog presents that is easily social and loyal with everybody and never disliking anyone. Variance in weight can be from pounds! This dog is active in sports which I might compare to a quarter horse. They envy a walk if possible 10 times a day, but that walk will only be bigger us for maybe 5 to 10 minutes. This difference determine the difference in pricing that you will see regardless of optimal specification they always weigh heavier on the scale than that they look because their bone structure is dense for their size. There about like years that stand to attention have become their trademark and their faces are somewhere between a pug and an English bulldog. The French bulldog can wait any were literally from 15 to 40 pounds but the breed average is from 22 to 28 pounds and standing about 1 foot tall. A fun aspect of the breed is a tremendous variation in color unlike other breeds that are more consistent. This Breed spends everything from white to Brindle to fun with spots and without and in varying shades in almost every color of the rainbow. Fad colors are including chocolate black and blue and tricolor and these have been frowned upon for years by classical breeders and registries and French Bulldogs LA clubs of America due to the in breeding that was necessary to create these colors. Overtime though we hope that because of ethics and patients that this fact will change. Brindle is the AKC definition of black but that color also varies as much is a black coffee to coffee with cream and should always include sprinkles of golden hairs. Note that eyes are meant to be dark brown and variations of this are due to fad colors which are most often reproduced in the past with in line breeding that exacerbates recessive traits and can reproduce like colored eyes again frowned upon by classical tradition traditional breeders but something that we hope to see changing in this near future. This means exactly that, it will not work for you but rather be a great companion happy to sit all day at your feet or on your lap. It is still small enough to be carried around or brought on board a plane. It loves walks albeit short ones and is sensitive to the heat so in the summertime I walk them only at night or early mornings. They cannot swim as easily as other breeds and need to be worked with in the beginning with the lifejacket as a puppy so that it can learn to swim. On occasion, some may howl like a coyote or periodically an actual true bark. But these are more rare instances. They would be a fun addition to any household, lighting up the room with their smile. Yes, they seem to smile! They are very social with all people never acting skittish, in fact the first to greet you. They behave well off the leash and it would be a common sight to see an owner walking a busy street with their dog freely at their side for they are very obedient and easy to train. They often snore though, so know this trait is common. Many doggy daycares will tell you the French bulldog is the boss dog of the pack. This may often be so but more and more French bulldogs are submissive. In fact, I, as a breeder, am breeding for this quality so as never to have a dog that you have to worry about fighting with another dog. Note that French Bulldogs do not drool unless extremely emotional and perhaps there is a dog in heat nearby otherwise primarily a dry mouth. What is a Bulldog? A Bulldog is of course nothing other than a Bulldog, but if you have not seen a Bulldog or a picture of one you may be surprised. People often confuse Bulldogs with other «Bull» breeds, particularly boxers, pit-bulls or bull terriers. The Bulldog is very distinct canine with a rich heritage that surpasses most other known breeds of dog. The Bulldog is a squat, thickset dog, with a large blocky head, short foreface and turned up jaw. If you have decided to get a small sleek-haired dog, strong and brawny, with self-respect and kindness in relation to people and especially to children, intellectual so, that it does not demand special training you will not be mistaken if will choose the French bulldog. If the English bulldog is a symbol of calmness and confidence of, the American bulldog is the furious security guard the French bulldog is a dog companion, cheerful, tender and surprisingly clever! The small, amusing, devoted friend, thus the brawny robust fellow in whom blood fighter ancestors and during the moment of fight or protection of the owner flows, quite often proves brightly enough. On the Native land of the French bulldog in France almost in all families live the French bulldogs. With an impressive 32 years of experience as French Bulldog specialists, we are uniquely positioned to provide invaluable insights. Our primary goal is to extend our assistance to you, irrespective of your decision to acquire a puppy from an alternative source. As accomplished veterinarians specializing in French and English Bulldogs, our knowledge spans three decades. We focus exclusively on these breeds, surpassing even the knowledge of general veterinarians. This specialization is vital as traditional veterinarians often cater to a diverse array of animals, which may hinder their ability to provide tailored guidance for a single breed. Numerous individuals remain unaware of optimal feeding practices for their Frenchies or English Bulldogs, both before and after the six-month mark. The intricacies of vitamin supplementation, appropriate shampoos, bathing techniques, and proper walking routines are often overlooked.

However, it can sometimes be a bit tricky to figure out what size harness is best for a Goldendoodle. What size harness is right for a Goldendoodle puppy? The correct harness size for your dog depends on what type of Goldendoodle it is. Goldendoodles are a mix of golden retriever and poodle, but poodles grow to a few different sizes, including larger standard dogs, medium poodles, and small or teacup poodles. What type of poodle your Goldendoodle puppy shares genetics with will help to determine how big it will grow, although some Goldendoodles favor the size of their golden retriever parent. Picking an adjustable harness that can be made larger as the dog grows is a great idea. Miniature adult Goldendoodles generally weigh between 15 and 35 pounds and will most likely only need a small or medium harness. Large standard Goldendoodles can weigh as much as 90 pounds or as little as 50 pounds, and they might need either a medium or large harness. When should a puppy first wear a harness? This helps them get used to the feel of the harness. Getting a dog used to a harness can make leash training much easier later on. The straps of a puppy harness are also usually a bit more narrow, which is less cumbersome and more comfortable for the puppy. Why are harnesses a good choice? Back-clip harnesses are the most common harness type. These harnesses have a single metal loop at the back of the harness for the leash to attach to. However, they can be problematic when it comes to tugging on the leash, and can actually encourage this behavior. These harnesses are an excellent tool for teaching your dog not to pull. However, a dog, particularly a puppy, can become tangled in the leash more easily when it clips to the front of the harness. Dual-clip harnesses are a hybrid of the front- and back-clip harness. These harnesses have a clip in each location, so you can clip the leash wherever is most convenient, or you can gradually teach your dog not to pull by using the front clip before switching to using the back clip. For example, if you and your dog are outdoors frequently, and your dog tends to get wet or muddy, you might want to choose a nylon harness that can be cleaned easily. If you walk at dusk or dawn, a harness with reflective strips of fabric is a great choice. Sharing is caring! Cart Puppy Shopping Checklist Below are some of the items you should consider when preparing for your new Moss Creek Goldendoodle puppy. You will not need everything listed before your puppy arrives - this list is intended to help you consider all your puppy's basic needs. You can print this and take it with you when you are shopping for your new puppy. General Paper towels - a lot of paper towels. Then use old towels. Baby Gate s - Try baby supply stores and Target - generally more choices and cheaper than pet stores Beware that horizontal bars provide a foot-hold for climbing puppies. Doodles sleep stretched out like frogs. They like a lot of room to be comfortable. Small Doodles can use a 36 inch crate. This will work for them for several months. Smaller for mini-small Goldendoodle puppies. Food and water bowls stainless steel or ceramic, no plastic. Waste Bags Poochie-Bells to hang by back door. Helps with house training - they learn to ring the bell to alert you that they need to go out. I highly recommend them for house training your new puppy. Booda bones cow tendons or bully sticks for chewing cow ears for chewing. Once they are fully grown into adulthood , this collar can be discarded in favor of a more appropriate adult collar. If it has extra sparkle or pizazz to mark their initiation into adulthood, all the better! We have an assortment of collars and leashes that provide our beloved Lexie with the extra something and sparkle for special occasions. We used the wider width collars on Lexie because we believed them to be more comfortable for her as she grew. When selecting a collar for a mini Goldendoodle puppy , the fabric is essential. Puppies have delicate skin, which can easily be irritated. Harsh fabrics, hard buckles, or snaps should be avoided in favor of simplicity and comfort. Another option for new mini Goldendoodle puppy owners is to choose a harness instead of a collar. Puppies are growing every day from head to toe. This growth includes their neck area, with the trachea being located there. As stated above, adjustable collars are best. Please set it to the appropriate size and work one way or the other to see what gives the best fit. If it is too big, the collar can quickly come off or, worse yet, get caught on something while they are running around. When should a Goldendoodle puppy start wearing a collar? This answer depends on the family, and when the mini Goldendoodle puppy will begin training and socializing. Ten weeks is a good time to start using a collar. Wearing a collar and leash training can be started as early as the family wishes, from eight weeks on, but sometimes it is just nice to give a new puppy time to adjust to their new home. A mini Goldendoodle puppy will move to a new home in the beginning weeks, with new smells and people, and there can be some apprehension combined with curiosity. While new puppy owners may be anxious to welcome the new family member, they may need time to adjust. The mini Goldendoodle puppy will have plenty of time to adjust to a collar and leash and learn what is expected of them, but sooner is better rather than later. During the early months of their life, they will be spending most of their time indoors as they are being house trained and getting acquainted with their new family. For training purposes, this is to start the puppy off on the right foot. If a puppy of this age wears a collar , it is best to have the collar on for short intervals as mini-training sessions. In the beginning, perhaps 15 minutes, and gradually increasing as they get used to the collar being around their neck. Some puppies will not like this while others will be okay with earing it. It is essential to keep a close eye on the mini Goldendoodle puppy when wearing the collar. Strangulation can accidentally occur if they manage to get caught on something while unsupervised. Whether they rest and sleep in a crate , soft bed, or the couch, they can accidentally get injured if they move around and get it caught on something. It is also a good idea to give their neck, skin, and fur a break from wearing the collar collar is like us removing our jewelry and necktie. Imagine wearing that to bed, uncomfortable, right? It also allows the fur rest and go back to its natural position, which, of course, keeps them looking adorably perfect! Final Thoughts. One thing you can do to prepare for your new bundle of fur is to go shopping! Jun 13, Share Bringing a dog into your home is a huge responsibility. Not only are you adding an extra mouth to feed and provide medical care for, but you must remember that dogs are meant to be loved. One of the most important things when sharing your life with a pet is making time for them. This is why when choosing a dog breed, you should know how they do when being left alone. Pugs are a breed that craves human companionship. These little dogs want to be your friend. They need affection and time, but can a Pug be left alone at home when you need to work or run errands? The answer to this question is yes, Pugs can be left alone. Thankfully, that length of time is only one suggestion. There are even some who say 10 to 12 or even more is safe. The true answer to how long a Pug can be left alone is dependent on the dog in question. Others may have more difficulty. Destructive tendencies are even possible. While your older dog may be fully potty trained, age can make it more difficult to control their bladder. To help your aging friend avoid accidents, frequent walks may be necessary. Image Credit: Pixabay 2. If they are, you will most likely come home to accidents all over the floor. Instead, you should start training your pup early in life. This can be done by promoting crate training and outside potty time. You should also consider training your pup at an early age to be alone. Working them into the situation slowly is a great idea. Then move outside for a bit to see how they do. Each time, increase the duration. This will allow you to see how your dog does with alone time and whether you need to do additional training to control barking or crying. As with any dog breed, some Pugs will be easygoing, playful, and loving. Credit: Chonlawut, Shutterstock 4. As a breed that was created to be a companion, Pugs want to be with their families. Luckily, if your Pug is showing signs of distress caused by separation anxiety, you can help them. If none of these seem to help, you may need to reach out to your veterinarian for assistance. Here are signs your Pug is suffering from separation anxiety: Excessive chewing and barking. Introduction Leaving your beloved pug at home can be a difficult decision that requires careful consideration. While there are certain factors to consider, such as age, breeding and temperament, when deciding to leave your furry friend alone, it is possible to do so safely and responsibly. With the right preparation and best practices, you can leave your pug at home and ensure that they stay safe and comfortable during your absence. Why Should We Care? When it comes to leaving a pug at home, age, breeding, training, and temperament play an important role. Some breeds are more prone to separation anxiety, while others may be able to cope better. The way you train your pug can have a huge impact on how they fare home alone. Some pugs may be more prone to separation anxiety due to temperament. To ensure the safety of your pug when leaving them home alone, always create a safe environment by keeping hazardous items out of their reach. Set a timer to remind yourself when to check on them and consider leaving a friend behind in the form of a stuffed animal. Keep your pug entertained by providing toys, treats, and puzzles when you leave the house. These precautions can help alleviate any worries you have about leaving your pug at home. Pugs can be left alone at home, but like with all breeds, you should always consider factors such as age, breeding, training, and temperament to ensure that your pooch is comfortable and safe. Before leaving home for extended periods, create a safe environment for your pug, set a timer to check in on them, or even consider leaving a friend with them. Giving your pug something to occupy their time like a bone or puzzle toy can help to prevent any unpleasant surprises when you return home. Always remember to practice patience and consistency when training your pug. Breeding may also be a factor, as some breeds may be more prone to separation anxiety than others. Training can also be a factor, as pugs that are trained to be independent are better suited to be left home alone. Their temperament is important; some pugs may be better suited to being left alone than others. The best practices for leaving your pug at home include creating a safe environment, setting a timer, leaving a friend, and giving your pug something to do. Make sure all cords and other dangerous items are out of reach, and that any furniture or decorations that can be chewed or climbed on are secure. A timer ensures that your pug is not left alone for too long, and leaving a friend, such as another pet, can help reduce separation anxiety. Provide your pug with toys, treats, or puzzles to keep them entertained. Age When considering whether you can leave a pug at home alone, age is an important factor. Puppies and young pugs need more attention and should not be left alone for long periods of time. They need to be trained to stay in their space and have someone to look out for them. Adult pugs, on the other hand, can usually handle being left alone for a few hours. Breeding can also be a factor when leaving a pug alone. Some breeds have a tendency to become anxious when left alone for too long, while others are much more laid back. Proper training is also key when leaving a pug at home alone. If not, it may be a good idea to start training them and teaching them some commands before you leave them alone. Breeding When it comes to leaving pugs home alone, their breeding matters. Toy pugs are less energetic than their larger cousins, and as such are more suited to being left alone. Larger pugs are more energetic and need more stimulation, so leaving them alone for too long can lead to behavioral problems down the road. There are different types of pug breeds. Brachycephalic pugs, for example, are more prone to heatstroke, so they should not be left outside for extended periods of time. Proper training will help them understand commands, like stay, sit, and come, and provide them with guidance on how to behave when left alone. You can start teaching the basics when your pug is a puppy, and continue to reinforce the commands throughout their life. You can also introduce them to reward-based training, which can help build trust and create a relationship based on positive reinforcement. Establishing structure and rules will also help to keep their behavior in check, and provide them with a sense of safety and security when alone. Best Practices for Leaving Pugs at Home When leaving your pug at home, the main aim is to ensure that the environment is safe and secure. Make sure to remove any items or furniture that your pug could potentially climb or chew on, and also make sure all electrical cords are hidden and out of reach. If you have any plants, ensure that they are not toxic to dogs, as pugs are known to chew on plants. Setting a timer can also be helpful when leaving your pug at home. If you only plan on being out of the house for a few hours, set a timer to remind you to return. This will help to avoid leaving your pug alone for too long. It may also be beneficial to consider leaving a friend at home with your pug. This could be a family member or a dog sitter. If leaving a friend is not an option, you should at least provide your pug with something to do while you are away. This could include a toy or a treat-dispensing toy to keep them entertained. By following these best practices when leaving your pug at home, you can help to ensure that they are safe and secure while you are away. Set up a comfy spot for your pup in a quiet, cool area of the house, free from loud noises and extreme temperatures. Provide access to fresh water and a few favorite toys or a chew toy to keep them occupied. Create a space that is just for your pup. This could be a designated bed, a dog crate, or a specific area of the house that is only for them. Put up puppy gates or a baby gate to cordon off the area so your pup can only access this specific part of the house. Make sure the area is comfortable, with a warm blanket and plenty of toys, and that the temperature is cool and comfortable too. Set a Timer Setting a timer when leaving your pug at home is an important part of keeping him safe. You can even set multiple timers to remind yourself to check in on your pup. That way, you can be sure that he is safe and sound until you come back. When setting the timer, make sure to give yourself enough time to get home and take care of your pup. Consider Leaving a Friend When you decide to leave your pug at home, consider leaving a companion. This could be a human friend or another pet. Like pugs, are social animals and are used to being around other animals and people. This will help keep them from getting lonely. It can also help them stay entertained and make it easier for them to stay out of trouble. Having a companion can also help reduce separation anxiety in pugs, making it easier for them to cope with being left alone. When you are leaving, let your companion know what to expect from your pug. Make sure the companion is comfortable and confident taking on the responsibility of caring for your pug. If you decide to leave another pet with your pug, make sure they are compatible, as this can make all the difference in how well they get along while you are away. Providing them with an activity can help keep them entertained and stimulated. This could be anything from a food puzzle or chew toy, to a training session or game. Leave your pup in a place that is safe and comfortable. Providing a bed or padding for them to rest and relax on can help keep them feeling secure and content. Doing so will help give them a sense of purpose and can prevent loneliness. Post Views: .But, how long is too long? Knowing what your pooch is up to when you are away will help you to prepare him for the time alone. The most likely scenarios are that your dog is going to: Sleep: On average, adult dogs sleep between hours a day including at night and puppies can sleep up to 18 hours. Play: If you left a toy behind, your pooch will play for a bit, especially if the toy is interactive. Eat: Some dogs will eat their meal from their bowl or a dispenser toy a more entertaining method. However, others will hardly eat or not eat at all until you get back. This is something you should keep an eye on. Quiet breeds will refrain from making noises, but outspoken ones will bark at everything that moves they have a much better sense of hearing than us. Also, dogs that suffer from separation anxiety will likely whine, cry, and even bark when you are away. Explore: If your dog is not left to remain in his safe space like a room or a crate, he will likely explore around the whole house! And this can be the cause of many hazards. Pugs are companion dogs and they are prone to separation anxiety when left alone for too long. Your pug will, more likely than not, get lonely and anxious. When we leave our pooch alone all day, it has an effect on them and it shows with a more intense greeting behaviour towards us, the owners. Also, studies have shown dogs to display more physical activity and attentive behaviour when their owner returns, after 2 hours of separation. Leaving your pug alone all day is definitely not advisable if you want a happy, well-adjusted family dog. Pugs Suffer from Separation Anxiety Separation anxiety in dogs is a behavioural disorder. Its main characteristic is a state of extreme anxiety or panic due to the dog being separated from their owner. When this occurs, the most common visible signs that your pug has separation anxiety are: Elimination i. Destruction i. Excessive vocalization i. According to AVMA , separation anxiety is one of the most common canine behaviour problems. If you want to prepare your pooch to become confident when left alone, keep reading! For most dog owners, one of the main concerns is leaving their pooch home alone on a daily basis e. Although it is hard to leave your furry friend behind, your pug can and should be able to handle short periods of alone time just fine. It sounds basic but dogs can be a handful, and they can easily get themselves into trouble. Because of their curious nature, they can unintentionally jeopardize their safety and security. Getting your pug gradually ready to be alone will result in a confident dog that stays calm and comfortable by himself. To achieve this, train your dog from day 1 using crate training. But you have to teach him to be okay in a confined space that has enough room for him to move and to stay by himself for a while. You can start with 5-minute sessions and build up to 20 minutes. And gradually step out of the house. Your pug will soon associate being calm and alone with a nice reward. You can even increase the reward and alone time accordingly. Basically, you are setting limits to potentially harmful situations and at the same time providing your pooch with the comfort he needs. Your dog safe zone provides many benefits for both of you: You have crafted a dog-friendly area that is safe for your pug, i. It helps to train your dog to be away from you for a while, preventing separation anxiety. By the time you start leaving your pug alone, he already feels comfortable, relaxed and safe in his own space. Ultimately, your pooch goes into this area on his own, and also when you give him a verbal cue. Because of all of these, you worry less and feel more confident leaving your dog alone. It is also helpful for creating a sense of security when a dog sitter or walker is going to care for your pooch. Either way, he should be restricted from wandering around the rest of the house to avoid dangerous situations or accidents urinary, reaching for something valuable or harmful, etc. Finally, never leave your dog held up in his crate door closed for the whole day. He needs to be able to move around! A crate should be a temporary location tool used for training this is the time you close the crate door and only used for short periods of time for example, no more than 2 hours. This can lead to fatal situations like your dog escaping, or suffering from hypothermia, sunburn, or dehydration, for instance. If your furry friend has gone for a walk and spends some time sniffing, for example, he is more likely to sleep during the day. By exercising your dog, you will not only tire him out but also prevent boredom. However, this behaviour is counterproductive as it can lead your dog to develop anxiety and stress. Instead, exit quietly after leaving your pug content with a toy in his safe zone. Before leaving, make sure your pug has enough water in an accessible place and some food if necessary. Lack of stimulation. Lack of mental and physical stimulation can lead to various health and behavioural problems such as: Restlessness and boredom. Pug Dog Separation Anxiety Overview Separation anxiety refers to a dog suffering a distressed reaction to being home alone. This goes beyond a Pug simply missing his owner, but involves overwhelming feelings of isolation that may manifest in a number of ways but ultimately taking a toll on a Pug's emotional and sometimes physical health. As an owner, you may feel helpless as you see your Pug struggling to cope with your absence. However, you'll be relieved to know that there are actually quite a few things you can do to help your puppy or dog be calm and composed while you are away. Signs of Separation Anxiety with a Pug Most of what a Pug will experience will take place when their owner is not home, so it can be tricky to know exactly what the puppy or dog is going through. However, anxiety may start to creep in when a dog senses that their owner is about to leave. Once alone, one or more of the following behaviors are usually present: Whining or barking - This may be excessive with some dogs being vocal until they entirely wear themselves out, only to start up again once they take a break. Destructive chewing - This is often done as a self-soothing technique. Self-licking - Some dogs obsessively lick their paws or other easily accessible parts of the body, also as a self-soothing technique. Depression - Not only may a dog feel sad while their owner is away, this may carry over even after they are reunited; some Pugs have trouble 'snapping back' after experiencing an episode of anxiety. Panicked behavior - Dogs may jump and lunge themselves into walls or other objects. If this occurs, it is generally after several hours of isolation. Restlessness - There may be compulsive pacing or other repetitive behavior. Excessive drooling - Stress and elevated heart rate can trigger this. These behaviors may change with time. For example, a Pug may act very restless when alone but this may transition into depression or vice-versa. If you wake up with barely enough time to get ready and rush around to get yourself out the door, no doubt your Pug will pick up on this vibe and feel just as stressed as you are. And, without a good release of energy expenditure, you are setting your Pug up to have trouble with feeling confined and restless. So, it can help to wake up earlier to get ready in a calmer manner and have time to bring your Pug outside for a brisk minute walk before you leave. If you also have time to engage your Pug in a short game of fetch, this can only be beneficial. If your Pug has separation anxiety, the last thing you want to do is allow your dog to be alone in a big room or roam the house which only exacerbates feelings of isolation. The goal is to create a defined space that canines see as secure 'dens' that hold everything your Pug needs to stay comfortable, relaxed, and occupied. This can be accomplished by the following means: 1 Gates or a canine playpen. If your house has the right floor plan, gates may work to section off a room. But, keep in mind that this should be a room that is very familiar, such as the living room or kitchen. And, this should be no larger than 10 square feet for a young puppy and 30 square feet for an adult Pug. If not, you'll lose some of the benefits of keeping things contained, such as separation anxiety aids being within reach. For this, something like the Carlson Lil Tuffy Expandable Gate may work well; this is pressure mounted and spans across 26 to 42 inches. An alternative method is to use an indoor canine playpen. This is a self-contained, open-topped area that can offer just the right amount of space. It is recommended to use one that has a door, since you'll want your Pug to have positive association with his playpen, and leaving the door open when you're home for your Pug to rest or to receive special treats is a good way to do this. This is nearly 3-feet high, but the open concept rails allow for excellent sight-lines. It has 21 square feet of space which is ideal for older pups and adults, though if you want to make it even larger, there are extension panels that can be added. For young pups, you may wish to consider the smaller 24" option. All Pugs should have a memory foam dog bed since this breed is prone to joint and hip issues and starting at age 6, osteoarthritis. And, when a Pug is home alone, having a warm bed with proper support to curl up and rest or take their toys or chews over to will offer comfort and security. Chances are that even if your Pug is fully house trained , if you're away from home for more than a couple of hours, there will be bathroom needs; So, it's best to set your Pug up for success by having pee pads on the floor within the playpen or gated-off area. And, if your Pug is a young puppy, this is a must. Even if your dog is not accustomed to pee pads, these are often used by default. Because your Pug will be within a defined area and dogs rarely soil their own belongings, pee and poo is typically deposited onto the pads or other indoor method that is being used. When it comes to how much food and water should be left for a Pug that is going to spend the day home alone, always over-estimate this. Since water can easily be spilled, you may wish to use a canine water fountain or dispenser like the Old Tjikko Dog Water Dispenser. For food, you can leave a bowl of your Pug's kibble if you will be gone during a scheduled meal time; but another method is to fill a treat-dispensing chew toy with kibble this is cover ahead under 'Toys'. There are lots of additional ways to help a Pug feel more relaxed and comfortable when home alone. Things you can do include: Set up the defined area away from any drafts as well as AC or heating vents. Check the angle of the sun to ensure that it does not shine directly into your dog's area. Experiment with a window vs a non-window view some dogs like being able to take peeks outside but other will bark at everything they see. If you have a programmable thermostat, be sure that it does not switch to the 'away' setting to conserve heat or AC while you are gone. Keep at least one light on. Even if it is nice and sunny when you leave, developing cloudy or stormy weather can darken a house and in turn make a dog nervous. A significant contributing factor to separation anxiety is boredom. It amplifies any feelings of isolation. So, the goal will be to leave toys for your Pug that your dog will notice and will enjoy playing with on their own. There are several types of toys that can help: 1 Interactive toys. These are toys that respond to a dog's movements or touch; they will light up, speak, or make noises. In essence, when this happens, your Pug will feel as if the toy is playing back with them. Importantly, these will activate when a dog wishes to play but will go into sleep-mode when a dog wants to take a break. If you'd like some recommendations, there are a couple of good ones: The Pet Qwerks Blinky Babble Interactive Toy is a neat toy that responds to a dog's nosing or pawing at it with flashing lights and all sorts of silly noises. It comes in different sizes small is good for Pug puppies and the medium is good for large adults , and the batteries in this durable toy last for quite some time. The PetQwerks Talking Babble Ball Toy is similar to this, but without the flashing lights, and the various noises that it makes are all silly sayings like 'Hey, baby! These are chew toys that hold and slowly dispense dry kibble or dry dog treats. This meets two needs at the same time when a Pug is home alone, it helps ensure that a dog eats while owners are away and it can be just the thing to keep a dog occupied. There are some things you can do to make this more tempting like smudging smooth peanut butter or fish oil around the outside openings of the toy. A terrific one for this is the PetSafe Twist 'n Treat Toy which allows you to adjust the difficultly level and it's pretty easy to clean. These are unique toys in the fact that the purpose is to come as close as possible to offering a lonely dog an actual companion. These will have the same qualities as a living friend, such as being a good size, having a heartbeat, and emitting body warmth. Some dogs find these incredibly soothing, seeking them out as soon as their humans leave the house. This is a very durable toy with a realistic heartbeat and just the right amount of body warmth. The 'heart' is replaceable, should it ever wear out and you can obtain heating packets as needed. An added plus is that this is washable and it comes in several different colors including a 'golden' that is comparable to a Pug's fawn coat. For many dogs, separation anxiety worsens as the day goes on. So if a Pug can receive even a small break with a bit of human interaction, this can really help. If you are able to return home near the halfway point of your absence, even for 15 or 20 minutes, this small window of time may be enough for your Pug to 'reset' and better cope for the second half of the day. You may also want to consider hiring a dog walker. Often, being able to release pent-up energy, breathe fresh air, and have that sort of social interaction can also offer a reprieve. Another option, though certainly not for every budget, is a pet cam. This can allow you to see your Pug and also talk to your dog or even offer treats, no matter where you are. Most of these work over WiFi and via an app on your smartphone that lets you choose from the various functions. Checking in a few times a day can keep your Pug happy as well as give you piece of mind that everything is okay. Just be careful that your boss doesn't catch you remotely playing with your Pug all day long; if they do, you didn't hear about this from us. This has live-stream video, two-way audio, and holds dry treats that you can toss to your dog by tapping that function on the app. It also has night vision mode and can even send you push notifications if your Pug starts barking. Let's take a look at the options, including pros and cons: 1 Supplements. Calming supplements that may work are those that contain colostrum proteins considered a safe supplement for dogs that is shown to reduce anxiety, L-theanine a naturally occurring amino acid that works to increase dopamine and in turn reduce stress, and thiamine vitamin B1 which supports the nervous system to reduce anxiety. There are other compounds such as Valerian root, chamomile, and melatonin that may work to some degree. When given about 30 minutes before departure, this can work very for some dogs. This type of anti-anxiety supplement is also used for other high-stress situations such as hearing fireworks or a thunder storm. However, it typically is not so potent that it would work on its own without other steps being taken as previously listed , it can make dogs drowsy, and some dogs may experience an upset stomach. If you feel that your Pug could benefit from a calming supplement, one to consider is Pet Naturals of Vermont Calming Supplement ; this has no artificial additives and are soft chews flavored with real chicken liver. This sort of aid is based a holistic approach that involves inhaling certain scents to improve emotional well-being. It works by activating sensors in the nasal cavity which in turn sends signals to the brain. And, if you don't know much about this, you may be wondering if this could actually help your Pug. While there are some promising studies and a lot of anecdotal informal evidence, this is not a magical cure. However, some dogs do respond very well to this and it can be part of an overall plan to reduce your Pug's separation anxiety. If you'd like to try this, the most popular method is to use an oil diffuser like the Zen Breeze Essential Oil Diffuser and chose lavender oil which is well-known for its calming effects. Be sure to set the diffuser where your Pug cannot reach it, such as up on a table or a sturdy high shelf. This should only be considered in severe cases in which anxiety is so bad that it is interfering with a dog's health and ability to function. There are two main types of medications that may be prescribed. One option is benzodiazepines tranquilizers , which certainly can help with anxiety for many dogs, but has possible side effects including increased appetite, moderate to severe drowsiness, and even increased anxiety in some cases. There is also a possible link to memory issues and the ability to learn new concepts. The other option is antidepressants like buspirone. Possible side effects include loss of appetite, restlessness, nausea, headache, dizziness, aggression, and hyperexcitability. Extra Tips 1 Act casual and calm as you get ready to go. Do not overcompensate by offering lots of soothing words and hugs which dogs quickly learn means their human is about to leave the house. Trust in the environment that you created and the aids that you have set up for your Pug. Do this at least 20 minutes beforehand in a matter-of-fact manner. At random times, have your Pug go there, then leave the house but return just 5 or 10 minutes later. Do not rush to your Pug proclaiming your love and gushing apologies. This can send the wrong message that it was a miracle that you returned. Instead, place your keys down, grab a drink of water or sort through the mail, then casually release your Pug from their area and take them outside for bathroom needs. Once that is done, you can express your happiness and offer lots of attention. After being home all day, your Pug deserves some fun interaction and physical activity to release pent-up energy. Many owners who see that their Pug is miserable and lonely when home alone wonder if getting a second dog will help. The short answer is yes since it eliminates the isolation factor; however, you'll want to really put thought into this before making the commitment. Here are some things to consider: 1 The Pug is undoubtedly one of the friendliest breeds that exist. He typically gets along extremely well with other dogs and with other Pugs in particular. However, for some there is a period of adjustment; the dogs may not take to each other right away. Grooming tasks such as baths, brushing the coat, at-home dental care , etc. If you obtain a puppy, time and effort will need to be put into house training. Owners thinking about adding to their Pug family to ease the anxiety of a current dog may want to give it a bit of time before making such a big decision. Some Points to Remember Some Pugs may never be completely happy when left home alone; however, over time they may learn self-soothing techniques and gain more stable coping strategies simply by getting accustomed to the routine of being alone for a certain amount of time. If you have worked hard to set up a pleasant, safe and comfortable area for your Pug and you are a loving owner who spends quality time with your Pug, try not to worry too much. Remember that your dog will pick up on your vibe. Always take time to play with your Pug and introduce him to as many places and situations as you can. When a dog has a full life of exploring, interacting and enjoying his world and a close bond with his owner, some days of being home alone will not outweigh the rest of what you offer to him. As long as your Pug is house trained, they should be fine to be left alone for hours per day. In order to prevent any accidents, I recommend using a baby gate to confine them to a certain area of the house. Pugs Are Prone to Separation Anxiety Pugs love human attention and interaction and if they are left alone for prolonged periods of time, they can suffer from separation anxiety. However, this goes beyond a Pug simply missing its owner. How else will you be able to pay for the pet food, toys, and bills to raise a healthy Pug? If not, then head on over here to start training your pet properly. Leaving A Puppy Alone for 8 Hours Pugs that are left alone for too long can suffer from separation anxiety. Puppies do not gain full control of their bowel movements until they are 5 or 6 months old. If you do have to leave a puppy while they are still being potty trained, you definitely need to teach them how to go on pee pads or check out the best litter box for Pugs. You can also consider leaving them in a kennel while they are alone in the house. We used to do this for Mindy when she was a puppy and she never had an accident while she was home alone and we were working. Do not scold them if they have an accident in the house while you are gone. Make sure that your pup has access to their food and water bowl. You may also want to leave some puppy toys that can keep them entertained while you are away. I highly recommend the Kong Toys, it kept Mindy busy for several hours. If you plan on leaving them alone for 8 hours or more per day, you may still want to confine them to a specific area in your house. As Mindy got older she used to get bored while we were at work, until we got her the Perfect Fit Gate and kept her in the kitchen. When we were living in the house, she had access to the pet door so she could go outside and use the toilet whenever she needed to, she loved laying in the sun. So we chose to leave her in the kennel whenever we were working our day jobs. Make sure that they have access to their food and water bowl. How Long Is Too Long? As I mentioned above, most dogs will be fine to be left alone hours a day. This means that if you have an hour commute to and from work, an hour job, followed by running errands and spending the evening out. Your dog could be spending 12 or more hours in a single day all by themselves. Most dogs will be just fine spending time alone, as long as you leave them enough fresh water, toys, and other forms of entertainment. However, Pugs were bred to be companion dogs and will do much better when they are around their human families. Leaving a dog home alone for 10 — 12 hours every day is a long time for any dog, regardless of breed. Imagine if you were left home alone without any companionship for that period every single day. With owning a Pug as a pet or any kind of pet, you have certain responsibilities. No one wants to leave their pet alone for too long. Pugs can get their feelings hurt too. Here are some tips that you can use to minimize the amount of time you leave your dog alone. Doggie Daycare Enroll your dog into a Doggie Daycare program. Even if they go once a week, this is one day less that they have to sit at home waiting for you to come home. This can be a great way for you to socialize your Pug with other dogs. Take your due diligence and find a location that has their staff interact with your pet. Avoid the ones that just leave your dog locked in a kennel all day. If you do enroll them in a doggie daycare program, you may want to invest in some pet insurance. You want to make sure that your furbaby is protected when they are around other dogs. Eat Lunch at Home If you work close to home, try going home and eat lunch with your Pug. They will be excited to see you and they will enjoy the time you spent with them. I used to make it a point to come home and eat lunch so I could take Mindy out of her Kennel. It was a great way to get her to stretch her legs and go potty. Hire a Dog Walking Service There are several online dog walking services like Rover that you can hire a dog walker. These types of sites put you in contact with people who want to earn extra money by walking dogs. Professional dog walkers can range in services from a quick walk around the block or spending an entire day with your pooch. The most important thing to remember is that you do your due diligence and make sure you choose the right site and avoid those horrible dog walking services that are out there. If they are trustworthy, have them check in on your pooch and take them for a walk. Your pet will be excited to see someone during the day and will enjoy the time they spend with them. Take Your Dog to Work There are several companies that allow their employees to bring their dogs to work. Obviously, not every employer is going to allow you to do this. You may be surprised by their response. Just make sure that you have plenty of poopie bags to clean up after your pet while spending time in a public place. Get Another Pet Another solution is to get another Pug as a pet, a different breed, or a cat. You should only get another Pug if you can give them the attention they will need. A second Pug should never take the place of you giving your dog attention. Final Take Away Pugs will do fine if you leave them at home while you go to work. It may be hard at first to get them into the routine of being left alone. But once you do it a few times, they will learn your routine and will know when to expect you home. Every dog is different and some may bark uncontrollably after you leave the house, while others may just lounge around on their bed all day long. The only way to know for sure if your dog barks when you leave them alone is to invest in a doggie camera. This will allow you to monitor their behavior once they are left alone. The Pug temperament makes them a great dog for people who work or leave their house for hours per day. Especially if your entire household works outside of the home. Adult pugs should be physically fine if left home alone all day. Pugs were bred to be lapdogs, and prefer to be with people as often as possible. Pugs are much happier if they have consistent contact with people. Will pugs bark if left home alone? Pugs are prone to separation anxiety. As a result of that anxiety, they might bark when left alone. My pugs Frank and Beans were not bad about barking a lot. About the only time they did bark, was when we left them home alone. Beans in particular, would bark almost non-stop the entire time she was left home alone. Of course, this barking can cause a problem if you live in an apartment complex, condo, etc. Some pugs cry when left alone, instead of barking. If your pug is severely bothered by being left at home, your pug may bawl when you leave. In some cases, you may find your pug acting distant after you get back home. Pugs have a pretty good temperament and would do okay in work settings that allow employees to bring their pets to work. Once they are past the puppy stage, pugs are pretty low energy. If you have an office job where you can set up a dog bed and let your pug be near you while you are on your computer most of the day? Your pug would likely do well to come to work with you. The temperature of your work environment is something else to consider. How much space should pugs have when left home alone? Pug puppies may need to be kept in a very limited area with access to almost nothing. More mature pugs may be capable of being left home alone with free range of the house. To some degree, you have to know your dog. My pugs Frank and Beans were well beyond the puppy chewing phase when we got them. The only exception to this would be if food packaging was left in their reach. We once had a snack bag left on the floor which they found, chewed through and ate. So, keeping food packaging from being accessible was important. When we lived with roommates, we chose to confine them to our portion of the house. We would put up a baby gate or pet gate at the entrance of our bedroom or kitchen to keep them in just that room. When we first got our pugs, we had been told they were kennel trained, and used to sharing a single large kennel. When we first got them, we left them in the kennel when we left the house. This worked fine, and was a reasonable option. We just found that they did fine without needing to be confined to such a small space. In that case, you may seek out other ways to get your pug companionship while you work. Some options: Doggy daycare. Some people leave their pugs at doggy daycares during the work day so that they get socialization and more physical activity in. Dog walkers. You could hire a dog walker to come mid-day to take your dog out for a walk and play with them a bit. Come home for lunch. So what can you do to help soothe your pug when they do have to be left at home? Keep their environment safe. Keeping your pug away from electric cords, household cleaners or other dangerous items is important. Give them a cozy spot. Some pugs may take great comfort in their dog crate. Others may have a favorite stuffed toy, blanket or dog bed. Try to give them access to whatever brings them comfort as long as it is safe. Leave them something that smells like you. Make sure your pug has had enough exercise. Limit the amount of time your Pug is left alone Improve the quality of alone time for your Pug The best approach is a combination of these two options. Depending on your lifestyle and commitments, any combination of these great options could be perfect for you. Limit the amount of time your Pug is left alone As much as possible, try to limit the amount of time your Pug spends alone. Rather, with a bit of planning, there are ways to have the best of both worlds. Take a look at some of these great options. Doggie daycare Doggie daycare is quite the norm these days. Flex-work See if your workplace offers flexible working arrangements. These days, this is becoming more and more common. Perhaps you can work from home a few days a week, or even take your Pug into the office with you — your colleagues will love you. Get a car seat Getting your car equipped for a doggie passenger is a super way to reduce the amount of time your Pug spends alone. This way your Pug can join you as you go out and about completing errands or visiting friends and family. Friends and family Speaking of friends and family. They might be able to take them for a walk or play with them for a while. Improve The Quality of Alone Time For Your Pug As well as making sure your Pug has as much company on a regular basis as possible, you can also try to improve the quality of their alone time as much as possible. That way time alone will be safer, and tons more fun. Why not try out some of these options with your own Pug. Make your home Pug-safe Make sure your home is safe by blocking access to any potential hazards. Train your Pug Instead of leaving your Pug alone all at once, train them into it gradually. Start by leaving them alone for very short periods and then build up incrementally. This process can be started at any age, but for best results start early. As tempted as you are to smother your Pug in goodbye kisses — resit. Loneliness is often just a byproduct of boredom and lack of mental stimulation. Get your Pug some super fun toys and chews to help them while away the hours in glee. Can Pugs be left alone? Within reason.

golden retriever puppies for sale in ky craigslist - And when is the best time to start training them? Naturally, the sooner your start with training, the easier it will be. Moreover, you have to remember that you are responsible for your pup. You need to show consistency in your own behavior. Your Doodle will have an easier time adjusting to his new home and family if you start from day one. Establish a Proper Routine Firstly, you should establish a proper routine for your Doodle. This includes meal times, bathroom breaks, playtime, naps, and bedtime. Keep in mind that consistency is key in Goldendoodle training. A structured routine gives dogs a sense of security. It will also help your new Goldendoodle puppy understand how you want them to behave. Routine is also an important part of housetraining , as consistent feeding times will also beget consistent potty times. If you have other family members living with you, make sure you all follow the exact same routine. It is usually recommended that puppies younger than six months of age eat three meals per day. Socialize Your Puppy Secondly, all dogs, and especially Goldendoodles, are social creatures. They enjoy spending time with their families and meet other dogs at the dog park. Early socialization is important for your Goldendoodle pup to get used to new people, pets and situations. Goldendoodle Training Sample Routine Goldendoodle puppy behavior is very much your responsibility. Puppies usually need to use the bathroom first thing in the morning. Tip 2: Feed your pup at the same time every day. This is a great way for your puppy to socialize with you and your family. Tip 3: Potty time around 30 to 60 minutes after each meal. Tip 4: Playtime or exercise after potty time. Playing with toys and shorter walks are perfect for baby Doodles. Tip 5: Puppies usually need to relieve themselves after exercise, as well. Puppies can sleep up to hours every day! Make sure no one distracts their sleep, as they need to rest. Tip 7: After naptime or being in their crate, take your pup for a bathroom break. Tip 8: Bedtime every day around the same time is also very useful to enforce a consistent routine. Remember that puppies around weeks of age need smaller portions and more frequent meals. Therefore, they will also need to go potty more frequently. And as we already said, all dogs and puppies are unique. This is a rough guideline that most Doodle owners find useful. Well, all dogs are unique, so there is no one size fits all approach in Goldendoodle training. However, there are a few main training methods that most dog owners find useful when training a Goldendoodle puppy. Of course, the younger your puppy is, the shorter their attention span. Usually, the general guideline is to start formal training at four to six months of age. However, keep in mind that first you should build a relationship and bond with your pup. Clicker Training Clicker training is one of the most popular Goldendoodle training methods that professional dog trainers use. It combines reward training with a small hand-held clicker that you will click every time you reward your pup for good behavior or when following a command. Your puppy will soon start associating the clicking sound with a reward. Therefore, your pup will also associate it with good behavior. Best for Clicker Training Compare Products 2. Positive Reinforcement Your behavior and attitude has a huge impact on your Goldendoodle pup. Always use positive reinforcement and do not scold or punish your pup for accidents. Remember, your puppy is still learning and growing. Instead, it will just make them fearful of you. Whenever you want your Goldendoodle puppy to do something, always keep a positive and enthusiastic attitude. If your pup has completed the task, always give plenty of praise and a nice little treat or a toy. Some dogs respond better to reward with food and others respond better to toys. However, always use these rewards together with lots of praise and enthusiasm. Crate Training Crate training is another very popular Goldendoodle training method. Crate training can take a few days or a few weeks, but the results are worth it. Keep in mind that you should only leave your pup in the crate in hours equal to the age in months that they are. See Also: Click the image 4. Mirror Training Mirror training method uses positive reinforcement and a clicker to teach a dog how to follow your lead. As your pup is looking up to you, they will naturally want to mimic your behavior and attitude. A great way to keep this from happening is to keep your kitchen counters clean and tidy at all times. Do not store food on counters longer than you prepare your meals. Surely you enjoy a clean kitchen, as well! Another tip is to put your pup in a crate or away from the kitchen while you prepare your meals. Jumping One of the very first things that you can start teaching your Goldendoodle puppy is to sit to be greeted. This will teach your puppy that they will only get attention once they sit. If you reward them, they will continue doing it. Barking With every common behavioral problem, the key is to think about what you want your puppy to do instead. How would you like them to react when someone is knocking on the door, or how should act when you have guests over? For instance, you can train your dog to sit still in a designated place when the doorbell rings. Leash Pulling When your puppy starts to pull the leash, immediately stop walking. Once your puppy has stopped pulling, you can start walking again. Doing this continuously will teach your puppy good leash manners. No-pull harnesses and headcollars can also be great tools for training your pup not to pull on the leash. See Also: Click the image 5. Make sure your pup has enough interesting toys and provide them plenty of playtime and exercise. Biting and Mouthing Biting is a completely natural behavior for dogs. As with any other behavioral problem, biting also can stem from your pup wanting your attention. Also, biting and mouthing might indicate that your pup needs more playtime. Having raised our two kids and our kiddoodle , I think the term fur baby is both a term of endearment for our beloved dogs and a truism too. A Goldendoodle puppy brings: late-night potty outings, schedule changes, and puppy zoomies. Golden Nugget 2: Doodle puppies are golden. From potty training to feeding schedules to questions about teething, our veterinarian was a great resource. He took the time to answer questions and shared information on everything from piranha puppies teething puppies to loose-leash walking. Just like having a great pediatrician for our children, our veterinarian was and still is today one of our most trusted resources and partners. Are you familiar with AAHA? They are the gold standard of veterinary care. Vet practices who are AAHA-accredited have been evaluated on requirements. You can find an accredited vet in your area by using the AAHA vet locator. Like many Goldendoodle puppies, Chloe had two speeds. She was either a little red fireball of energy or one pooped pup. Our family quickly learned that the sooner we could guide all that energy and intelligence, the better. Puppy training was a great way for Chloe to: socialize with other dogs and people learn new skills and commands in class practice those new skills at home bond with her humans and us with her! Golden Nugget 4: Puppy proofing the house pays off. Like a toddler, Goldendoodle puppies explore with their mouths and are incredibly curious. Chloe had an affinity for our socks. This seems to be a common Goldendoodle thing. Keeping our Goldendoodle puppy safe meant putting safety plugs into the electrical outlets, putting up child safety gates, keeping everything picked up including phone cords and socks, and watching Chloe like a hawk. Additionally, we learned about the dangers of xylitol a sugar substitute that is found in hundreds of foods and consumer products. I found this article by integrative veterinarian Dr. Golden Nugget 5: There is a direct correlation between intake and output. What goes in must come out! By keeping Chloe on a feeding schedule, potty training was easier. Additionally, we watched for the signs of puppy potty behavior: Was she sniffing the ground? Did she suddenly stop playing or stop in her tracks? Was she circling? All are potty cues. A Goldendoodle puppy sees a giant chew toy. She pulled at the seams and drug it around with her mouth. Needless to say, the dog bed quickly went into a closet. Golden Nugget 7: Climb every mountain…or wire pen. We had invested in a sturdy wire exercise pen and sat it in the living room. Goldendoodle Puppy Training at Home First 30 days Puppies are born blind and deaf and cannot see or hear for the first ten to twenty days. However, they have a fantastic scent and touch abilities. Puppies are also aware of the temperature. If the mother is unavailable, humans can step in to help. Training sessions for newborns are short and to the point. These sessions consist of Bio-Sensor training, where they are stimulated with swabs like Q-Tips. Exercises can be performed along with exposing them to minor temperature changes. This will stimulate the brain and help them deal with stress. Mother dogs stimulate the senses from birth by licking and cleaning the puppies. This helps them develop. Wavy coat Goldendoodles are typically low shedding. Wavy coat Goldendoodles come in all sizes from standard right down to Teacup Goldendoodles. Since dogs have scent receptors twenty-five times better than ours, they can smell things several hundred feet away. You should expose them to calming scents and daily scents of rain, grass, and other things outdoors. Then, their ears will open, and they will need to be introduced to sound. Dogs learn by association, so only play soothing sounds. As their eyes start to focus, you should start with colors. This will help build confidence. Goldendoodle Puppy Preschool and Earliest Socialization months of age At around three months of age, your Goldendoodle is full of energy and ready to play. But remember that they are still a baby — just an infant animal. It is so essential you practice positive reinforcement with your puppy and avoid punishment altogether. This is also the age your Goldendoodle is ready to learn basic commands. The first thing you should do is pick a definite marker. A positive marker is a word, sound, or phrase used to tell your dog they have done something right. Use the same marker every time. Also, you should follow it up with positive reinforcement in the form of a treat, playtime, or affection. Do Goldendoodles Smell? Reward your puppy often and early, so they associate the treat with the behavior. Negative reinforcement or punishment will likely do nothing but scare your puppy. Puppies will chew things and have accidents in the house. However, you should remember they are still learning, and any punishment is counterproductive. Simply correct the mistake and praise them when they do something right. The most important thing is to be consistent. Your puppy learns by doing, and repetition is the best thing for them. This is also the age where socialization is a critical part of their development. All this begins once the Goldendoodle has the all-clear from the Veterinarian to socialize in public. .During this age, your Goldendoodle should be exposed to new people, places, and animals every day. If your puppy shows fear or anxiety, take a step back. This is when you should begin doing gradual exposure. Safe introduction to different sizes and temperament dogs is important early If you introduce a dog to a household with cats , extra care needs to be taken early to ensure a long-term relationship of tolerance. Predicting Goldendoodle coat types is tricky. Goldendoodle Training for Safety and Basic Commands 3 months to one year At around four months old, your puppy will begin to develop preferences. Your job is to make them feel safe and secure in any environment. This way, your puppy will grow up to be confident, kind, and ready to take on anything. Positive reinforcement techniques are especially important during this stage. Any harsh punishment can have adverse effects on the Goldendoodles psyche. Since your puppy has had all his shots, they are ready to go to the dog park, daycare, and puppy training classes. This will help with socialization. Keep in mind that forcing your puppy to interact with others can hurt the bond you have with them. Always make sure your dog is enjoying the experience and is safe. Allow him to explore the world at his own pace. This I the time to start introducing your Goldendoodle to water. Early and frequently exposure will make taking your Goldendoodle to the pool or even the beach a breeze. Learning Commands Additionally, this is when puppies can begin learning commands like sit and stay. Teach them to sit before exiting with treats. Lure them into a sit by the door and begin to open it. If they get up too quickly, close the door. Keep up this game until the dog remains seated and patiently waits for the door. When they do, give them a treat. Most puppies are highly motivated by treats and food. If they anxiously await each meal or immediately pounce on the food bowl when it is set down, this is an excellent opportunity to work on self-control. Before every meal, have your Goldendoodle wait to eat. Place the food down and say stay. If they lunge for the bowl, take it away for five minutes. Start with a five-second wait and gradually increase it by five-second increments. This will allow their self-control to get better. Another great Goldendoodle training tip is the Four on the Floor for those puppies that jump on anyone entering your home. Practicing this technique can stop the puppy from jumping up on unsuspecting bystanders and knocking over kids. When you come home, and your Goldendoodle is happy to see you, make him sit before saying hello. Give an ear rub or greeting only when all four paws are on the ground. Training a Goldendoodle to Enjoy Grooming All ages Start grooming your puppy at a young age and practice handling with this Goldendoodle training tips: Work when your puppy is relaxed and not hyper. Keep grooming sessions short like a few brush strokes or clipping a few toenails. Use a quality slicker brush that will not hurt your Goldendoodle Practice frequently, like weekly. Pair it with a treat. Lightly touch-sensitive spots like between the paws or on the ears from an early age Consider buying a grooming table early so your Goldendoodle can get used to it if you are going to be DIY grooming your Goldendoodle at home. See the best grooming tables specifically for Goldendoodles. Advanced Goldendoodle Training Options 12 months plus, agility, and advanced classes The American Kennel Club, or AKC, says that once dogs learn basic commands, they can move on to advanced training or sports. You may opt to teach them scent training. Treibball, a German dog sport not just for herding breeds , is when the dog drives eight oversized inflatable balls into a goal. They can also do obstacle courses and test their agility. Scent training is also a fantastic way to mentally enrich your dog and stimulate their brain daily. Scent training starts as simple as a muffin tin game at home. Then advanced courses do wonders and can result in some very complicated tricks and habits forming. October 25, In search of a new forever best friend? Not sure what puppy breed works best for you and your family? The Goldendoodle, a hybrid breed that launched into popularity in the United States in the s and never left the top list, Goldendoodles are affectionate and smart dogs whose amiable personalities are well-suited for a variety of owners and lifestyles! How do you know if the Goldendoodle is the right fit for you and your family? A Brief Background on Goldendoodles! As we quickly stated earlier, the Goldendoodle is a hybrid, a cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever. Thanks to the success of Labradoodles Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross-breed , dog breeders began to intentionally breed Golden Retrievers with a range of Poodles, creating a variety of Goldendoodles in different coloring and sizes. What are Goldendoodles Breed Characteristics? Some distinguishable characteristics of the Goldendoodle include their sizing range, variety of coloring, and temperament. Goldendoodles can come in mini to standard size, thanks to the genes from their poodle side. Goldendoodles can weigh starting at 15 lbs for miniature sizes up to 80 Ilbs for standard. One of the most distinguishable features is their thick, soft, curly coats that are considered hypoallergenic because they shed less frequently than other dog breeds. What are Goldendoodles Personalities like? Goldendoodles love people! They are friendly, affectionate, and love to please. With the right amount of socialization, this breed will be a friend to everyone! However, their fun-loving personalities also bring a lot of high energy, jumpiness, and nippiness throughout puppyhood. This is important to remember especially if you have young children at home. Goldendoodles can make excellent family dogs, but proper training and boundaries must be started the moment you bring them home to help get them there! Think about your current living environment and where you plan to be in the next few years. That being said, if you were planning on adding a Goldendoodle to your life, consider that these pups do best in a home with enough space especially if you are getting a standard-sized Goldendoodle and a fenced in yard! While some Goldendoodles on the smaller range of the size scale work great for apartment dwelling, these are energetic breeds that need space to exercise and play. Regular walks and training sessions at a local park will help them expel some energy in a constructive way, and are highly recommended for this breed, especially if you live in a city environment! How to Care for Your Goldendoodle! Goldendoodles can suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, ear infections, allergies, hypothyroidism, and Gastric Dilation Volvulus Bloat. To avoid having to shave down their beautiful coats, daily brushing to remove mats is recommended, along with regular professional grooming appointments. Like all other breeds, having their nails trimmed and teeth brushed regularly will ensure they stay clean and healthy! Goldendoodle puppies are very smart and love to work! With consistent puppy training from an early age, they can master basic obedience skills quickly, and also move on to more advanced training, including therapy and service animal training. Start your puppy off on the right paw by establishing their daily puppy schedule complete with feeding, potty breaks, nap times, playtimes, and puppy training sessions! Going back to their wilder instincts, puppies will naturally avoid soiling where they sleep. Crate training your Goldendoodle puppy will help boost their confidence and resilience while learning to be alone at home. Puppy training can provide your puppy with controlled socialization with other puppies under the supervision of a puppy trainer that can watch out for rough playing or dominant behaviors between puppies. When done correctly, socialization helps teach your puppy the proper way to great people, other dogs and create boundaries. During socialization sessions, you can work with your puppy on barking or jumping, which are common puppy behaviors when they are excited or over-stimulated when meeting strangers. And if you're not sure how to do this on your own, hire a local puppy trainer to help set you up for the best success! Consider advanced training to keep them engaged Goldendoodles are very intelligent which means they love stimulating activities! Along with basic obedience, dog sports like agility are a great way to motivate them and help your puppy work out their energy. Agility helps establish a stronger communication bond through body language while your puppy is participating. You will learn to communicate with more body language and signals to focus your puppy at performing tasks necessary to help individuals that are incapable of doing it themselves. Respect their alone time. This is especially challenging for young kids when they can look like real-life stuffed animals! But, this constant handling can often cause some frustration for these young pups, having them act out with more nipping to try to make the petting stops, or growling, which can lead to more serious behavioral issues down the road. Make sure to give them dedicated time through the day to rest and their own space where they can be left alone to nap, unbothered. And always monitor young kids when they are interacting with the puppy so you can easily step in to give your puppy a break when they need it! Did you recently bring home a Goldendoodle puppy? Unsubscribe at anytime. Most puppy owners ask about the best age when they can start training their Goldendoodle. Basic Dog Obedience Training can happen at any age — but the earlier, the better. You can even train a four months old puppy or change the behavior of a five-year-old dog. In both cases, you will need commitment. With rigorous training, your golden doodles can turn out to become guide dogs, therapy dogs, service dogs, and sniffer dogs, thanks to their extraordinary alertness and agility. Some can even perform more challenging tasks, such as helping the disabled and taking part in complex rescue missions, thanks to how they are trained. Therefore we see no reason that a dog owner should leave flaws in basic obedience training. The high level of intelligence they inherit does not mean that they will start acting smartly as soon as you bring them home. No doubt, they have a strong genetic makeover for intelligence and sharp wits, which they take from both the golden retriever and the Poodle. Extensive training is required to polish their intelligence and make them brilliant. When you fail to establish your leadership over your Goldendoodle, it concludes itself as a superior or equal to you. When you allow your golden doodle to sleep on your bed or run on your sofa, or you let it sit on your dining table to feed, you are giving indirect permission to become your leader. Like most other dogs, they have a nature to live in packs, following a leader. Now assume that your family is their pack and you are their leader. When around a golden doodle, you should behave as a firm leader and never show nervousness or uneasiness in controlling your golden doodle. Goldendoodles are perfect observers. Your behavior influences their behavior. To reinforce your supremacy, you can adopt a few techniques. Giving in to what your dog wants will give them a signal that they can do whatever and whenever they want. In any case, it is essential to establish your authority over your Goldendoodle. Every dog owner must bear in mind that keeping a dog at home requires plenty of time that you can dedicate to training. Here are some basic principles that you must be aware of before you start training your Goldendoodle. Word commands are enough. Dogs are animals, and their brains do not process long sentences as human brains do. They will make mistakes. But with consistency and patience, you can make them learn everything you want them to learn. They learn what they see. Therefore it is necessary to demonstrate only acceptable behavior. Praise immediately when the Goldendoodle does something good, acceptable, and appreciable. They start associating praise and good behavior with each other. Do not get frustrated or angry with your Goldendoodle when they do something wrong while training. Keep your calm to make them comfortable with the training process. When your tone is affirmative yet firm, the dog takes it as a command. Praise is identified by a happy, affectionate tone which gives a hint of excitement. It is a positive approach and helps the Goldendoodle in learning things faster. A frustrated and angry tone will cause them to perform poorly and have difficulty in learning. Your positive and negative reactions serve as a guide for them during their behavior training. As a rule of thumb, training a Goldendoodle should base on constructive reinforcement and a positive attitude. Yelling, hitting, scolding, or screaming never produce the desired training outcomes in Goldendoodles. For example, when you pat the head often, the dogs get a lot of appreciation. On the other hand, you cannot teach anything by hitting or kicking the Goldendoodle. A Goldendoodle can easily recognize your rewarding and scolding behaviors by just listening to your voice. Physical punishment will do more harm than good. Dogs that are trained through physical punishments develop two types of undesirable behaviors. They develop a fear of admonishing, and this makes them timid. Dogs may also develop the habit of biting to take out their fear and frustration. Goldendoodles are very non-aggressive, loving canines, but if they develop aggression, it means they are not treated in the way they should have been. Whether or not you can hold the Goldendoodle by scruff if the dog misbehaves is still a debate among dog trainers. This type of touch is only beneficial if practiced immediately after the undesirable behavior. Using this method even minutes after the action loses its effectiveness. They cannot comprehend why one action is acceptable at one time and why not at the other. Here is how you can teach them how to listen to your commands. Now you can control the Goldendoodle whenever it becomes hyperactive. Your Goldendoodle will learn to respond without even the trigger of the leash. HEEL Walking by your side without going ahead or lagging is yet another lesson your Goldendoodle has to learn. For this training, you will require a short leash and a link-chain training collar. Here the dog is likely to lag or go ahead. A little bit of learning deserves Praise. If you lose your temper during command practice, your dog will start hating the commands. This unpleasant training experience makes the dogs disobey your commands. Remember that obedience is a gradual process that takes a lot of time and effort from both the owner and the Goldendoodle, and there is no shortcut to it. The success of training a Goldendoodle lies in making the process more and more pleasurable for both of you. None of you should be avoiding or hating it. Goldendoodle Training Tip No 8: Consider Taking Professional Assistance If you feel that you lack the temperament or your dog is not learning well, consider taking help from professional dog trainers. They are experts and use various methods for training dogs. More often, you will meet trainers who make use of their hands for training dogs. It means that your Goldendoodle will become accustomed to watching your hand signs for taking instructions. Doodle behavior specialists may come to your home or call you in your office for further consultation. Blaming oneself for a failed dog training further elevates frustration in the doodle owner, which results in more undesirable dog behavior. Goldendoodle Training Tip No 9: Use the Most Common Training Methods The training methods most commonly used by dog trainers include the following: Clicker Training Professional dog trainers use the clicker training method for Goldendoodle. Often the dog trainers use it in combination with reward training. They click the clicker to encourage and appreciate the dogs. Within a few days, your Goldendoodle will start associating the click sound with acceptable behavior. Positive Reinforcement: Dogs are sensitive to pleasant and unpleasant emotions. If you feel that you are getting angry with your fur baby, immediately seek help from dog training professionals. Dogs do not understand why they are getting punished. Instead of learning positive behavior, they may develop aggressive behavior. They learn fast when they receive praise, rewards, and positive encouragement. It will also prevent the doodle from running all around the house and causing annoyance to the family members. You must never use the crate as a form of punishment. Otherwise, the puppy will develop a negative association with it. Mirror Training The mirror training procedure involves positive reinforcement and a clicker to make the dog accept you as a leader. The mirror method symbolizes how the Goldendoodle will start following your actions. Goldendoodle Training Tip No Focus On Eliminating Most Common Undesirable Behaviors Here is a list of some habits that sometimes seem cute on a puppy, but if not controlled right from the beginning, they become a nightmare for the dog owner. The best way to prevent your dog from licking around the house, especially in the kitchen, is to maintain cleanliness. Secondly, it is essential to develop a habit of staying in their crate while preparing and eating your meals. Jumping Golden doodles often get excited when you come home from the office. In this excitement, it will try to jump into your lap. This is because they love cuddling and seeking your attention. They may also jump on your guests, which is undesirable behavior. You need to train your puppy to understand that they will get attention and reward if they keep sitting calmly. Barking Barking is their way to express their excitement or fear when someone comes to your home. Training is necessary to teach them the right way of welcoming the guests. Goldendoodle must know how to sit at a place quietly unless they are allowed to roam around or interact with guests. Only rigorous training can help them in staying calm. Leash Pulling Sometimes Goldendoodle pup will pull the leash. In such a scenario, it is better to stop walking. When this occurs repeatedly, they will learn appropriate leash manners. Reward them even when they learn a little. Digging Goldendoodles take out their extra energy by digging. Providing them an ample amount of exercise or playtime consumes their extra energy and distracts them from digging. Biting and Mouthing Like any other dog, biting is an instinct in Goldendoodles. Alternatively, you should provide them with good quality chew toys to satisfy their teeth and gums in a healthy way. Chewing Socks and other non-food items Puppies love to bite anything that comes in their access. You can reward them with chewable toys. Potty Training Potty training a puppy requires vigilance. You need to check for the signs when your puppy has the urge to go the bathroom. They often start barking, whining, circling, or scratching the door at that time. So with a little bit of attention, they quickly learn appropriate bathroom manners. Goldendoodle Training Tip No Socialize Your Goldendoodle Goldendoodles are social animals, and they are delighted when they are around people. To ensure that your Goldendoodle develops a social personality, expose them to several other dogs and humans. A regular walk routine ensures optimum exposure to noises, sounds, and sights necessary to build up confidence in your dog. Make sure that their dogs are well-behaved and calm. Final Words Training a puppy is a great responsibility. However, it may turn out a pleasant experience with a little bit of effort and patience. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. The Labradoodle is a gorgeous cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, and the Goldendoodle is an adorable mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Characteristics and traits can vary significantly because these pups are a hybrid breed, but they are usually incredibly people-focused, laid back, and playful, making Goldendoodle and Labradoodle training an enjoyable moment. Doodles make awesome pets, especially if their owners fully comprehend the importance of training from a young age. The type of adult dog breed you end up with depends a little bit on their personality and a lot on how you take care of them. Before you begin Goldendoodle and Labradoodle training, it helps to decide exactly what kind of dog you want to have. Do Plenty of Research It is vital that you have an understanding of canine learning theory because dogs learn very differently from people. A puppy does whatever it can to get what it desires the most at that moment. There are plenty of online resources that can teach you about methods to get the best out of your training. It may be helpful to consult a puppy training professional or spend some time at doggy school to get a headstart and pick up tips from experts. Your pup is a blank slate — with your guidance, they can develop the traits and learn the behaviors that you value the most. Labradoodle and Goldendoodle puppies are curious and they love exploring their new home as they make it their own. Getting it right during the early stages sets a precedent for the rest of their life. Spending as much time as you can with them helps build the foundation for a happy, confident and well-behaved dog. Form a Bond and Gain Trust With Your Doodle Before you do anything, you will need to develop a strong bond with your new pal to make sure they trust you. Try to keep your own energy as calm as possible — they bounce off you. While it may be tempting to get excited by their cuteness and mirror their enthusiasm, this makes it more difficult for them to listen to you and regulate their own behavior. Teach your furry friend what to expect from the moment they get into the home to stop them from getting confused. Use Positive Reinforcement Intimidation or fear tactics are never the best way to build a loving and secure bond between you and your fur baby. To make the most of this method, reward your pooch for good behavior and ignore bad behavior. Treats, verbal praise, and clicker training reward them for a job well done. This also helps them to make positive associations with you and training time. Everyone has their own list of priorities and yours will depend on factors such as whether you have children or other pets. Potty training is a straightforward, formulaic process that your new puppy will adapt to. A consistent routine is the key to getting them toilet trained as efficiently and effectively as possible. Let them outside at the same time each day, and take them to the same spot. In the early days, it may be difficult for them to make it all the way through the night, so try to make provisions for this stage. Select a word for them to associate with potty training and repeat it over and over whenever you take them to the toilet. Every time they do their business outside, give them lots of cuddles and praise, treat them and play one of their favorite games. There will be setbacks — getting it right takes time! If they mess in the wrong place, take them outside to their toileting spot and give them the chance to relieve themselves. We cannot emphasize the importance of praising them when they get it right enough! Crate Training Not everyone opts to crate train their puppy, but it can be useful for the earliest stages of Goldendoodle and Labradoodle training. The crate gives them a safe place they can call their own. Be sure to make the time they spend in the crate a positive experience, and never leave them in there for more hours than their age in months plus one hour. For example, a three-month-old puppy can be kept in their crate for no more than four hours. Socialization Dogs are social animals, and Goldendoodles and Labradoodles, in particular, are happiest when they spend time pleasing people and playing. However, building confidence takes effort and guidance from their pet parent. If you want to ensure they grow up to have a balanced personality, you need to expose them to plenty of dogs, people and different situations. Take them out and about as much as possible to help them become accustomed to a range of noises, sights and sounds. Bring them to a local dog park to get them used to spending time around other dogs. Manners Your adorable little pup has the potential to develop a host of bad habits, but these behaviors can be nipped in the bud. Temperament and Dealing with Small Children There are several steps to take while getting your canine cutie used to being a member of a family with children. Both pup and child will need to have clear boundaries mapped out for them so they can build mutual trust and be kind to each other. Let the child practice with a toy before they pick up or cuddle the pup. Ensure the child sits down when they play with the dog; this helps to prevent the pup from getting overexcited. Teach the child to do small tasks to help care for the dog, such as filling the bowl or helping with grooming. Knowing what to expect according to the time of day helps them to settle and feel reassured. Always wake them up at the same time, feed and walk them around the same time and do training exercises at a set time. Patience Is Everything! The best piece of advice for Goldendoodle and Labradoodle training is to have patience. Spend lots of time bonding and playing with your pooch so you can make training something fun that you both enjoy. If there is a behavior your puppy exhibits that you may think is cute while your puppy is small, you need to think ahead and determine if this behavior will be acceptable from an adult dog. Consistency is the most important tool for training a puppy in their first year and beyond. Each family member needs to use the same techniques and commands so as not to confuse your puppy. It is important to remember that a puppy associates a reward or a disciplinary action with its behavior in the past 3 seconds. Waiting longer than 3 seconds to reward or discipline is very confusing to a puppy. You cannot stop this behavior, but you can certainly direct your puppy to chew upon acceptable items until this phase passes at about a year of age. The only way puppies know how to play is the typical wrestling, biting, chasing, tackling, pulling, and nipping they do with littermates. In the absence of littermates, you and your family suddenly become the littermates. Repeat this same disciplinary action a total of three times in a row. Every now and then, a particularly feisty puppy will become more excited by this disciplinary action and need a more distinct disciplinary measure. This next action needs to be initiated quickly. This will be uncomfortable for your puppy. When behavior meets with uncomfortable consequences, the behavior will stop. With all this being said, the absolute best remedy is for you to arrange daily play dates with other puppies or young dogs. The bottom line is that your puppy needs to have active playtime each day. Jumping — Your puppy will jump on you to get your attention. This may seem innocent while your puppy is small, but Grandma may not appreciate being knocked over by the full grown untrained dog. Make sure you do not reward the puppy for the act of getting down as this will enforce the behavior of jumping up only to be told to get down for a reward. This is not a sign of aggression unless you allow this to go undisciplined over time. You need to actively discourage any and all growling directed at you. If your puppy growls at you when you get close to the food bowl, immediately remove the food bowl and feed the puppy out of your hand. Do not stop brushing until the puppy accepts this without growling. Each puppy needs to learn its place in the pecking order of a family. Obviously, they need to be the lowest on the totem pole. If allowed to be boss, growling is a normal thing for a puppy to exhibit when showing its dominance. Each family member must establish they are boss. This includes young children who are timid or fearful of the puppy. Remember that any behavior you allow as a puppy is then extremely difficult to curb later in life. If you do not wish to have your adult dog on the furniture, do not sit on the sofa holding your puppy. If you do not want your grown dog to grab your pant leg, etc. Leash Training — Training your Goldendoodle puppy to walk on a leash without pulling will take some time. Be patient and read our complete guide to leash training here. Buying a Trained Puppy — You can opt to have your puppy purchased at Fox Creek Farm trained by a professional trainer. Buying a trained puppy can save you a lot of time and benefit the entire family. Please visit our board and train services page for more information. Pet Insurance — We always recommend that any dog owner have a good quality pet insurance. Why us Superb Temperament Australian labradoodles are known for their amazing temperament. Our love for this breed began with our first Australian labradoodle, Georgia pictured below in the snow. She taught us what the Australian labradoodle was all about. With her intuitive connection, and sociable personality, we fell in love instantly and so did everyone who met her. She was a joy to train, willing to please, gentle, and just as funny as she was affectionate. Due to their extreme willingness to please and ability to train, a percentage of our dogs have gone on to do therapy and service work. Nourishing Environment Puppies like babies need nurturing and human interaction. We are asking them to live in our world so the more human experiences they can have before going home, the easier the transition. We utilize Early neurological stimulation, Early Scent Introduction, Puppy Culture, a 10 step handling exercise, as well as extensive socialization to raise the most well-balanced dogs. All of our dogs are fed a high quality, all natural diet, for maximum health. We believe in a holistic approach to the well being of our dogs, and they are minimally vaccinated. Excellent Health While we have a strong emphasis for temperament, having a sound, physically healthy puppy is of upmost importance. Healthy puppies begin with the parents. Our breeding dogs have to meet strict requirements to enter the program. We start with carefully selected breeding stock coming from a controlled breeding line. Our Labradoodles have allergy friendly coats that are non-shedding, and we love helping people with allergies add to their family. As a registered member of the Worldwide Australian labradoodles Association, WALA our breeding program along with hundreds of other programs across the world, are dedicated to ethical breeding, and continued focus on the improvement of the Australian labradoodle breed. Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association We are grateful that we are able to raise and share these gentle, fun-loving, and intelligent dogs with others. I would love to hear from you!
