There are silver labs, but silver is not an acceptable color in the breed standard as this color is believed to have come from a cross with the Weimaraner. However, dogs with this coat color may still be registered with certain kennel clubs. If the dog is a yellow or black lab, check that the puppy has brown eyes. In the case of chocolate labs, check for brown or hazel eyes. Check to see how long its legs are; while a Labrador should have longer legs than a Dachshund, its legs should be shorter than a Husky. Purchase a dog genetics test, which will give you a specialized testing kit. Some DNA tests will look for genetic markers, while cheaper tests focus more on the different breeds. Tip: Try to keep the puppy from sharing food or playing rough with the other dogs, as this might hurt the integrity of the saliva sample. Package the saliva sample according to the instructions given by the company. Seal the envelope or package carefully, so the sample is completely secure while it travels to the lab. Generally, you can find the test results listed by breed, followed by a percentage; however, this might differ, depending on the company. If this is possible, use a cotton swab to collect saliva samples from 1 or both parents. Store these samples carefully, so you can send them to a professional company. Seal the envelope or package carefully to secure the sample, and keep it safe in transit. It serves important functions like communication, balance, and coordination. It comprises vertebrae, with larger bones at the base and smaller ones near the end. These individual segments are separated by soft discs — similar to those found in spinal columns — providing flexibility for movement. This natural curl helps them maneuver effortlessly through water or tight spaces during adventurous pursuits. Labrador puppy tails are built with strength and adaptability. It allows them to communicate emotions efficiently or swiftly navigate through tricky situations. Labrador Tail Types Labrador tails cannot be explicitly divided into different types. However, the tails may appear different from one dog to another. The reason for what they were bred can make a difference. Show dogs are bred to match the distinct breed standard. Dogs not bred for appearance can have a distinct look. A working lab can have a thinner, longer, shorter, or curly tail. Every other dog of this breed may not have the same thick tapering tail. Two dogs can have tails with slight variation. A black lab tail, a yellow lab tail, or a chocolate lab tail can be slightly different. It serves as a way for dogs to express themselves, whether happy, scared, or nervous. If a Labrador Retriever wags its tail rapidly from side to side with excitement when greeting you, it indicates happiness. If their tail is tucked between their legs while cowering away from something or someone, it shows that they are fearful or anxious. These dogs were originally bred for fishing and hunting. Their powerful tails were essential for diving into icy waters and retrieving fish from boats. Their tails were also selectively bred for balance, coordination, agility, and communication. The thick base provided strength while swimming or moving about in the water or on rough terrain. The thin tail tapering toward the tip enables nimble movements on land or water. When your Labrador wags its tail vigorously while jumping around, it reflects excitement. A slow tail wagging signifies uncertainty or confusion, while a tucked tail between the hind legs shows submission or anxiety. Dogs communicate with their entire body language, not just their tails alone. They use subtle cues such as ear movements, eye contact, posture, vocalizations, and tails to express feelings. Balance, Coordination, And Agility The thick base of their tail is a counterbalance when running or jumping. It allows them to make sharp turns and sudden stops easily. When swimming, the tapering shape of the tail helps generate thrust in the water. Ensuring your Labrador gets plenty of exercise and playtime keeps their tails happy and maintains good muscle tone. Swimming And Water Activities Labrador Retrievers love water, and their thick tail is a powerful rudder. The breed was originally developed to retrieve from water bodies, making it an integral part of their DNA. It provides balance while standing or moving on slippery surfaces like rocks or boats. This painful condition causes the tail to become limp and flaccid. It can occur suddenly, usually after intense physical activity like swimming or overexertion. Most cases of Limber Tail Syndrome resolve themselves within a few days. Supportive care like rest, heat therapy on the tail base using a warm washcloth , and anti-inflammatory medication help. Limber Tail Syndrome is not life-threatening but can be very uncomfortable for your dog. A wagging tail may look harmless, but it can be quite powerful and easily hit hard objects, causing injury. Fractures and dislocations are more common in dogs with short or thin tails. Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatory medication, and sometimes physical therapy. Mast cell tumors, including Labradors, are the most common type of tumor found in dogs. These tumors originate from white blood cells and can manifest differently depending on their location. If located near the base of the tail or spine, it may cause pain or discomfort. Regular visits to the veterinarian detect any potential health issues early on so they can be treated promptly. Provide exercise for proper circulation, and ensure adequate nutrition with supplements like fish oil or glucosamine. Keep the fur around the base of their tail trimmed to avoid matting or tangling. Use a dog-friendly shampoo to wash their tail when needed. Trim any long hairs on their tail using sharp scissors or clippers, careful not to cut too close to the skin. Check for any signs of injury, such as cuts or bruises, and seek veterinary care if necessary. Swimming, running, and playing fetch are all excellent ways to keep your dog active while promoting a healthy tail. Give your furry friend plenty of opportunities to swim in open water or a pool. Water activities help strengthen their powerful tails as they paddle through the water. Running on soft surfaces like grass, sand, or dirt keeps their joints healthy and reduces the risk of joint problems. It can affect their tails over time. A balanced and nutritious diet includes high-quality protein, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Fatty acids maintain healthy skin and dense coats, promoting healthy tails. Hydration is crucial for a happy tip-tapping tail! Provide clean water at all times so they remain hydrated throughout the day. The ideal Labrador tail should be thick at the base and gradually taper toward the tip, with no signs of kinks or knots. According to AKC breed standards, a wagging tail can indicate friendliness. But excessive wagging or stiffness can denote fear or aggression. Docking or altering their tails can cause unnecessary pain and discomfort, leading to long-term health issues. With proper care comes better communication through body language signals. Labrador tail is medium and not longer than the hock per breed standard. However, some tails can be different from the standard. However, a labrador tail does not curl up over its head. Yes, golden retrievers can have curled tails. This is not a breed standard, but it is not uncommon either. Some golden retrievers may have a slight curl in their tail, while others may have a more pronounced curl that goes all over their back. What is the otter tail on a Labrador? The otter tail in a labrador is a thick rounded appearance. The thick look comes from the thicker coat. The tail has a small c-shape, is pointed downward, and is fairly straight. What does a Labradors tail look like? Labradors usually have a thick tail base that tapers toward the tip. It is free from feathering and is medium in length. It is thick with a short and dense coat surrounding it and gives an otter-like appearance. What does a lab tail mean? A stiff lab tail held high reflects confidence and dominance. It means your labrador will not back down. A low tail tucked between the legs indicates fear. Labs have thick and sturdy bodies with broad heads and long otter-like tails. The tail helps them steer in the water and reflects their emotions. Labrador retrievers have about 15, hairs per square inch of skin. This means that a full-grown Labrador retriever with an average surface area of 20 square feet would have about million hairs on its body Why does my Lab puppy have a curly tail? A lab can have a curly tail due to genetic variations. It can also occur when a lab is bred with another dog breed with curly tails. The happy tail syndrome can also cause a curly tail. Genetic traits determine the specific tail shape of a dog and can vary from straight to curved or curled. This variation results from natural selection, historical environmental factors, and selective breeding practices. Breeders use the standard as the blueprint in their breeding programs, as the ideal dog to aim for, to ensure the purity, continuation and future of the breed. Conformation judges use the standard as a guide to score against when judging Labradors in the show ring. The standard dictates what everyone in Labrador circles should adhere to. These differences mostly come down to just the use of language and the depth of the description within the standards. Some of the standards are quite short and concise, whilst others are very long and wordy. However, they all describe the same animal and agree on how a Labrador should look and on its characteristics and temperament. For my descriptions below, I shall quote the original UK Kennel Club breed standard with additions from some other standards where I feel it aids the description. Excellent nose, soft mouth; keen love of water. Adaptable, devoted companion. Well known for its kindness, confidence, intelligence and willingness to please, a lab should display all these qualities. With regards to body weight, sadly I see so many overweight Labradors in the UK. As a working breed, they must be agile and athletic. The excellent nose, soft mouth and love of water are all in the standard due to the breeds working nature. If he is to retrieve fallen game, he needs the ability to sniff out where it has fallen, perhaps to retrieve from water and especially needs the ability to bring the bird back without crushing or damaging the bird within its mouth. Kindly nature, with no trace of aggression or undue shyness. A Labrador is confident and eager to please due to being a working breed that spends a lot of time working with and for humans. A Labrador is also highly biddable so it can be easily trained for the work that is desired of it. It would be too hard to train and unreliable when working. Intelligence, kindness and willingness to please is hard to judge in the ring, but breeders especially should take note of this requirement. Jaws of medium length, powerful not snipy. Nose wide, nostrils well developed. Neither long and elongated, or short and stubby, it is in proportion to the strong yet agile looking body. Kind of square, but in keeping with the athletic yet kindly look of the breed. Although not explicitly expressed in the standard, whilst looking at the head of a Labrador, you can definitely sense the intelligence and kindness of the breed. This should be instantly recognizable. The color of brown and hazel is almost certainly just down to aesthetics and suits the overall color and look of the breed. The ears not being too large or heavy prevents the ears being out of proportion with the rest of the animal or making the Labrador look a little too much like a hound. Larger ears would also more easily snag on bramble and branches when traveling through dense cover, so making the dog more easily injured whilst working. Stating the ears must be hanging close to the head prevents the breeding of animals with pointed ears that would be out line with the look of the breed. Forelegs well boned and straight from elbow to ground when viewed from either front or side. Level topline. Loins wide, short-coupled and strong. Strength and stamina are important characteristics of the breed. The well sprung ribs refer to the Labrador look having a chest that extends out from the spine and nicely curves down into the belly giving a nice, filled out strong-looking shape. A Labrador that has a narrow chest and appears flat down its sides is not typical of the breed. Hocks well let down, cowhocks highly undesirable. The hindquarters are the engines for movement and provide much of the force for power in movement. May be carried gaily but should not curl over back. Not having a tail that curls over the back is useful in a breed that may have to crawl through thick cover, avoiding any chance of snagging on bramble or branches. The legs should not splay outward, nor splay inward There should be no weaving, bobbing, toeing out in the forequarters or elbows sticking out during motion. The Labradors effortless and graceful motion is essential in a breed that should be able to work all day. Any inefficiencies in movement will only hinder its working performance in high activity pursuits. The top coat provides a tough protection for a dog that has to wade through thick undergrowth and grassland areas. The undercoat provides a dense weather and water-proof layer allowing the Labrador to work in cold conditions and be able to swim in somewhat unforgiving cold waters. The undercoat is usually lighter in color than the overcoat but does not show through it. You can see the undercoat by running your hand against the lay of the fur. Yellows range from light cream to red fox. Small white spot on chest permissible. Approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition: dogs 65 to 80 pounds; bitches 55 to 70 pounds. The size is written into the breed standard to prevent attempts at selectively breeding Labradors into toy or giant sizes. The Labrador is a medium-sized dog. Linda has bred labs for many years as well as traveled the world extensively whilst judging them and really knows what they look for in the ring. Conclusion You should note that the four main areas that make a Lab a Lab, are the three physical attributes of its head, tail and coat, but with high importance also placed upon its temperament. The physical attributes described allow the ease of movement and stamina to work long days and the strength and balance required to carry heavy loads over reasonable distances in its mouth. A Labradors temperament of being loyal, biddable, intelligent, eager to please and highly adaptable is what makes the Labrador such an excellent working animal, but also dearly loved as a family pet. Labrador tail injuries Lab tails are thick and tapering, covered in the same dense hair as the rest of their bodies. Labrador tails are also practical, helping them to steer quickly through water in their original retrieving role! Some Labs may have shorter or thinner tails than average, which is considered a fault in show dogs. Happy Labrador puppies wag their tiny tails! The traditional Labrador Retriever tail is thick and gradually tapers towards the tip. Unlike some other retriever breeds, such as the Golden Retriever, Labradors have little to no feathering on their tails. Instead, their entire tail is covered in dense fur, like the rest of their body. However, some Labrador tails fall outside of this standard, being shorter, longer, or thinner than average. Instead, it follows their topline the line from their neck to tail. Giving them the overall balanced appearance that we know of this breed! Labradors can use their tails to help with swimming, as a powerful rudder. Labs communicate through their tail — like other dogs. Some Labrador tails curve upwards although not over their back , and others may be dead straight. Labrador Tail Types There are no real different Labrador tail types. But, Labrador tails may look slightly different from one dog to the next, depending on what they were bred for. For instance, Labs bred for show are bred to fit the strict breed standard. Dogs who are not specifically bred for appearance can differ a little more. So, you may find working Labs with thinner tails, shorter or longer tails than average, and even tails that curve upwards a little more than you expect. Of course, many theorize that the otter tail shape also helps Labs with their working ability. Some may have a thinner tail, or one that does not taper so gradually. Lab Tail Colors These variations can happen in Labs of any color. Labrador Tail Injuries It is possible for your Labrador to injure their tail. The most common problem that affects Labrador tails is limber tail. Other than limber tail, this condition is also called water tail, swimmer tail, limp tail, and more. If your Lab has limber tail, their tail will hang lifelessly, or may jut out a little before hanging limp. But, fortunately, there are ways to help a Lab suffering from limber tail. Potential risk factors for limber tail include swimming, high latitudes, and even genetic predisposition. If your Lab seems to be suffering with limber tail, you should take them to your veterinarian straight away. In the first 24 hours, anti-inflammatories can be given to shorten the length of the flare up. And, your vet will be able to give your Lab dog-safe pain relief, if nothing else. This could take anywhere from a few days to over a week. Do you have a Labrador with the popular, classic otter tail? Has your hard-working retriever ever suffered from limber tail? Find Out More. The tail is constructed in a way that supports the dog in its role as a retriever, especially in water. Otter showing the otter tail shape of a Labrador Retriever tail Pixabay How many bones are in a Labrador tail? The medial artery together with two caudal meaning near the tail or rear arteries runs up to the end of the tail. Nerves can get damaged and affect the functioning of the tail. Dogs use their tails to communicate , so it is important that the nerves do not get damaged. Nerve damage usually occurs due to excessive strong pulling on the tail. The tail of a Labrador is also used in their swimming and retrieving actions, so if your Labrador suffers from a limp tail , it is advisable to consult a veterinarian immediately. Why do Labradors have thick tails? The tail is thick at the base, muscular, flexible, and taper to a point. The Labrador uses its thick tail to help propel and steer it when swimming and to keep balance when chasing or playing. What should a Labrador tail look like? Can a Labrador Retriever have a curly tail? The only deviation from this standard occurs when the dog is in action and moves its tail as needed to function effectively. A tail that hangs between the hind legs or curls above the back, is not acceptable and may even indicate that the dog is not a pure-bred Labrador. It should be in line with the head and rest of the body as prescribed by the breed standards. See the previous paragraph. The tail hair is dense and wrapped tightly around the tail. It does not have a feather-like appearance like other breeds such as the Golden Retriever. Most Labrador lovers prefer the twizzle as a logical culmination of the wrapping of the hair at the end of the tail. Limber tail The cause of limber tail is unknown Limber tail is a painful condition where the tail of mainly large working dogs becomes flexible or limp. Limber tail occurs in Labradors and is mostly self-correcting.
DRA Temperament and Behavior Very much like the poodle, the aki-poo makes an affectionate pet that is also devoted and loyal. It has also inherited the intelligent nature of both its parents. With their bold and sturdy nature Akita-like nature, they would perceive the impending dangers to their owner and his family. Just like the akitas like to take charge, which, in turn, came down from their wolf ancestry, aki-poos might as well be protective of their families, making them a good watch and guard dog. They are lively, easygoing and playful, and would spend a good play time with children, and with the fellow pets in its family, especially when properly socialized. However, like the Akitas, they might not always be very comfortable with younger kids, especially if not raised together. Care Exercise Taking them out for a daily half-an-hour walk or jog is important. The Akipoo, with its inherent herding and hunting instincts, need these activities to burn its energy and stay mentally healthy. Grooming With a moderately long and dense coat, the akipoos need a frequent brushing at least thrice to four times a week. Health Problems Generally a healthy cross breed. But some individuals can develop issues related to dysplasia. Training Begin teaching your pup when they are between 8 and 12 weeks old, since it is then that they are most receptive to basic commands. Train them to hold patience and under no circumstances should they be allowed to show dominance. Eat before your aki-poo, and let it wait. Train your aki poo to socialize and be tolerant with younger kids. Kids often feel gravitated towards pups. Give them the snacks to offer to your puppy, or ask one or two of them to lightly give an itch or two. If you discover your puppy has a tendency to bark, do not yell at it to make it stop. Since, this might sound like you are barking with it. Akipoos often inherit the hunting and herding instincts from their Akita parents, and hence, they would easily pickup game tricks like fetching, swimming, tugging, etc. Diet and Feeding Being almost the size of the Akita, a diet schedule similar to dogs of this built is recommended. Make sure your energetic dog gets lots of protein and high-energy through its daily meals. A mix between the headstrong Akita and the regal Poodle , this newer cross is sure to keep turning heads for years to come. Interestingly, Akitas got their start protecting royalty in feudal Japan. Keep in mind that this breed is highly energetic. They are also fairly stubborn and will do as they please without proper training. Still, they require an experienced dog parent due to their energy levels. Still, there are millions of dogs waiting for homes in shelters. When looking for a specific breed, make an effort to adopt from a shelter or rescue. Read on for a detailed list of characteristics of the Aki-poo. An Aki-Poo is a cross between a purebred Akita and a purebred Poodle. This designed dog breed is relatively new, and the exact origin of the Poodle Akita mix is hard to pinpoint. However, their parents have long histories, so we can learn more about Aki-Poo dogs by taking a closer look at the history of each parent breed. It began to develop as a retrieving water dog more than years ago. The poodle has an elegant look and is one of the most intelligent dog breeds. The Akita history: The Akita originated in the mountains of northern Japan. It was used for hunting and fighting before being trained for police and guard work. Aki-Poo size Generally, a full grown Akita Poodle mix stands from 15 to 28 inches and weighs between 45 to pounds. Males tend to be larger than females. But remember that the size of your Aki-Poo will largely depend on their parents. Appearance The Poodle Akita mix will have a strong and sturdy build, small eyes, dark muzzles, erect or floppy eyes, and fluffy tails. Their coats can be curly and coarse like Poodles or dense and plush like Akitas. They can be a mix of multiple colors or solid. Lifespan Aki-Poo dogs have an average lifespan of about 12 to 15 years. Three main factors that affect the longevity of a dog include: Genetic information they inherit from their parents. Events like illnesses, injuries, and accidents happen to them during their life. Their nutrition and lifestyle. Our furry friends can live longer and be with us for many years if they receive immense love and proper care. Read on to know how to do it properly. Poodle Akita mix personality Poodle Akita mix dogs inherit personality traits from both the Poodle and the Akita. They can be very protective of their family like Akitas or be vocal without barking extensively like Poodles. They are excellent guard dogs and will not hesitate to make their presence known and protect you when they sense you are in danger. Both of their parents are prone to bloat and joint problems. Exercise Like their parents, Aki-Poos have a lot of energy, so they need significant physical activity to keep them happy and healthy. Lack of stimulation and exercise can cause them to gain weight, feel unhappy and behave destructively. They require at least 30 minutes of walking every day. They may also enjoy playing fetch, hiking, and swimming. Supervision is a must. It is recommended with all dogs to prevent injury or unexpected escape. As with most dogs, they will respond best to positive reinforcement. Rewards can be their favorite food, treats, praise, belly rubs, and so on. You should keep each training session short and fun to hold their attention. The Aki-Poo is a great family dog, but because they have the DNA of a very protective breed like the Akita, they will need early socialization to ensure they get along with kids and other animals. Be sure you introduce your puppy to many different people, animals, sights, noises, smells, and places in a safe manner. How to groom them? Akita Poodles shed moderately. They require regular brushing to keep shedding under control. Bathing once a month is recommended to keep their coat shiny. Maintaining the oral health of any dog is a difficult task. To give your dog all the necessary nutrients, you should serve them high-quality food. Their food must contain a good amount of protein and no artificial fillers or additives. Because they are prone to bloat and easy to gain weight, you should stick to a regular feeding schedule and not leave food out throughout the day. Meals served two times a day are ideal. But they may struggle with young kids like infants and toddlers, so families with older children will be a better fit for this breed. It will reduce the risk of injury. Akita Poodle mix for sale The price of Aki-Poos will be a bit pricey because of their rarity. It will depend on their parents, the number of available puppies, and medical attention received. You should adopt Aki-Poo puppies from reputable breeders. A reputable breeder will provide you with health certification, and their dogs should be kept in the best possible environment. The full grown Poodle Akita mix stands from 15 to 28 inches and weighs between 45 to pounds. They inherit personality traits from both parent breeds, which is why they are excellent guard dogs. Lifespan Sociability The hybrid breed is a combination of the Akita and Poodle, both of which can be expensive breeds. This is especially true of the Standard Poodle if it comes from an award-winning line. Ensure that you use a reputable breeder so that you know exactly what you are getting and to ensure a greater chance that your puppy is healthy and well adjusted. The Akita can be aggressive and if the hybrid breed shows signs of this aggression, it is possible that the owner may put them up for adoption. As such, it is possible to find this breed in shelters, but you must take care when rehoming from a shelter. Ensure that you know as much as possible about the breed and the reasons for the dog being rehomed. This is just one way in which the breed flourishes in cold conditions. The breed does not tend to do well in hot climates, although this is tempered somewhat by combining it with the Standard Poodle. Poodles Are Extremely Intelligent The Akita is no slouch when it comes to mental acuity, but it has nothing on the Standard Poodle, which is known to be one of if not the most intelligent breeds. They are able to learn a long list of commands and can usually learn a new trick within a handful of repetitions. In fact, they will create games to relieve the boredom if they are not given enough mental stimulation. They can learn up to words, compared to the average canine vocabulary of around human words. In truth, there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic breed. People with dog allergies are allergic to a particular enzyme secreted by dogs, and it is commonly found in the dander of their coat. All dogs produce dander, but in varying degrees, and breeds like the Standard Poodle, that do not shed much hair, are said to be hypoallergenic because their low shedding means that they do not give off a lot of the enzyme that causes allergic reactions. This means that he could be laid-back like the Poodle or protective like the Akita. This particular pairing will create an especially intelligent dog, with high potential for trainability. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are affectionate with those they consider to be part of their inner circle, but can be distrusting of others, and especially of strangers. Their caution around strangers makes them a good choice as a guard dog. In contrast, the Poodle is much more laid back and relaxed. They will normally get along with anybody. The Aki Poo usually gets along with most people, and will almost certainly get along with immediate family. They are generally considered good with children, although you should supervise time between your Aki-Poo and small children. It is also worth noting that the breed can be very protective of their family, so you will need to take care when children are playing. If your dog perceives friendly play as being a threat, it could lead to aggression. This will ensure that they know how to behave around others and that they understand what you expect of them. It also teaches them that new situations, new people, and new animals are not to be feared. He can also be aggressive, especially with strangers. He is not the perfect breed for all potential owners, and you should know the following information about this breed before you consider taking one into your home. The actual amount you feed will be determined by their age, size, and activity level. Active dogs require more food. Both breeds are prone to bloat, so you will need to measure the amount you give, feed over meals per day, and avoid exercise for an hour after each meal. Provide around 90 minutes of walk per day, and add in as much additional play as possible. Also bear in mind that this breed is highly intelligent and you will need to provide mental stimulation, as well as physical. If your Akita Poodle mix gets bored, he is likely to act out by creating his own games. This is one breed that can excel at dog agility and other canine sports, and these represent a really effective way of providing physical and mental stimulation. The Poodle is used as a service dog, police dog, and in a host of other service roles around the world. He will pick up new commands quickly, can master hundreds of commands over the course of a lifetime, and he can learn complex tasks. Early training of the mixed breed is a good idea. It can help ensure that your Akita mix is not aggressive or too cautious around strangers, and it can help with socialization. Regardless of whether he adopts the Akita or the Poodle coat, he will still need regular brushing so expect to brush your Aki-Poo at least every week, potentially more if he does shed. You will also need to provide other grooming for your Akita Poodle Mix. This means that you will have to brush his teeth three times a week and trim his nails when you notice that they are long. I turned around and my registered Akita decided he wanted to "picnic" too. I panicked at first, but then I figured we were safe because the Poodle was surely pregnant with Goldendoodles. Sixty three days later five precious little Doodles arrived. They were all black or gold, like they were supposed to be, except one little guy. He had white tips on some of his toes and a white spot on his chest. Still in denial, I wrote that off as a Golden trait. Until, about four weeks of age, Retro's tail started curling. UH OH! Retro went to live with my boyfriend, of 32 years, who's only raised German Shepherd Dogs. The boyfriend now thinks we should make Aki-Poos on purpose. He thinks Retro is wonderful. Hence, "Retro the Wonder Dog". Plus, the Akita in him keeps him wondering about stuff. Standard Poodle is an awesome combination. The gentleness of the Poodle tones down the assertiveness in the Akita. Need I say more? Would depend on which coat each pup inherited I suppose. Retro's coat does need grooming around his face like mama Poodle. He still blows his coat like an Akita but not as heavily. He's a happy go lucky guy without an aggressive bone in his body. Clown like, like his mother. Won't listen sometimes, like his father. Easily trained. Very smart. Pete thinks maybe even smarter than the GSDs. Should be healthy because of the hybrid vigor. I could go on and on and on. To sum it up, Retro is the best mistake I ever made in my life. Life Span Did You Know? An Aki-poo is a cross between an Akita and a Poodle. They grow into large dogs that are devoted to their families, loyal and protective of them, and also affectionate with them. Aki-poos tend to resemble their Akita parent, but individual puppies will vary and some may inherit more Poodle characteristics. Aki-poos are courageous dogs that are loyal to their families and tend to be protective of them. This can make them initially suspicious of strangers. However, as long as they have been properly socialized and trained, they will tend to warm up once introduced. They also tend to take on an easygoing, playful, and affectionate personality with their families and people they know. They tend to get along well with other dogs and children, but may prefer older children. An Aki-poo also tends to have a high prey drive. The Aki-poo is a moderately adaptable dog. Their size and high energy make them a better fit for homes with fenced-in yards where they can run. These dogs can adapt to apartment living as long as enough time is dedicated each day to giving them enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. They tend to do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat. Because they are devoted to their families and bond closely with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. As a barrel-chested dog breed, an Akipoo is at risk for bloat like their parent breeds. Although Aki-poos are intelligent and pick up on things quickly, they can sometimes inherit a stubborn and independent streak from their Akita parent. This, and their high energy, can be a challenge for first-time dog owners to handle alone. As such, it is recommended to be prepared to enroll in puppy training classes. Not only do they strengthen the bond you have with your puppy, but they also help keep training consistent and even offer some opportunities to socialize a puppy. They likely will shed moderately and require brushing a few times a week. If they end up with a Poodle coat, they will need daily brushing and professional grooming every weeks. Nail trims once or twice monthly is usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Daily brushing or use of an enzyme toothpaste for dogs can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. An Akipoo is a high-energy dog breed. They need daily walks plus playtime and some time to run to be happy and healthy. And, they will likely be up for even more activity if you are. Letting them run freely in a secure area is a great way to make sure they get enough exercise. You can also see if they enjoy swimming or hiking with you and try other activities once they are finished growing. A fully-grown Aki-poo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. An Akipoo generally lives for years. Aki-poos are also sometimes called Akidoodles, Akitapoos, and Pookitas. Currently, we do not have any Aki-Poo puppies available, but we can alert you when new Aki-Poo puppies are available! Just enter your email address and click submit! Sabrina A. Luna Lou when she was itty bitty Bath time can be a stressful time for our pets but also for us! Here are a few tips that have helped us make bath time a little more enjoyable for everyone. Dallas will tiptoe around a puddle if she can. Therefore, I do what I can to make it as pleasant as possible. Lucky for them, I used to be a hairstylist and give a mean scrub and massage. But before we get to the rubby-dubby stuff I start with a warm bath and some sweet talking. I run the tub with warm water and double check the temp before letting them in. I call them over with positive energy and promises of treats. One really important thing to have is an anti-slip mat for your tub. It really helps them stand and feel more confident in the bath. Make sure you have your shampoo, towels, cup, and something to put under your knees. Our dogs, being bulldogs, can have skin irritations so I use a shampoo that is formulated for sensitive skin and has little to no scent. Just like humans, dogs all have different needs and that should be taken into consideration when choosing their shampoo. As I mentioned, I stay away from strong smelling shampoos. As tempting as it is to buy the luxurious smelling dog shampoo and how nice it would be for us to snuggle our noses into their perfumed fur, you have to remember how sensitive dogs noses are and also those strong perfumes can be drying on their skin. Washing Off the Stink Once they are in the tub, I take a cup and scoop the warm water and get them all wet. I am very careful not to get water in their face and ears. I just use my one hand to hold her ears out of the way while I carefully pour water behind her ears. I avoid washing their face and just use a wash cloth. Next, I add soap to my hands and start scrubbing. I rinse her all off and then do a second shampoo. This time I let it sit on while I give her one of my super massages and good butt scratches. I now do a final rinse and continue until all soap is gone. You really want to make sure you get it all off or it can cause irritation. I follow that with a rub with my hands to try and get some water off before taking them out of the tub. I like to have a couple towels on the floor layered open on top of each other. It is what it is! Good thing they are cute, right?! After they have shaken all the water off themselves and all over your bathroom sorry, no tip for that one…if you have one, please share! If you have a bulldog or any other wrinkly faced pooch, make sure to dry their wrinkles well. Same goes for that tail pocket. I like to use my blow dryer on low with a few shots of cool to dry the tail pocket. Just like people, washing too often will strip them of their natural oils. Usually the nose knows. If they are smelling a little wild, we bathe. That is usually every couple months. During allergy season we bathe more often. They are vet checked and micro chipped prior to going to their forever homes. We may consider full registration on very specific puppies and families. All of our puppies and dogs are raised in our home, where they are loved first and foremost. If we do not keep back from a certain breeding those on the list will automatically be moved up in picks. We always have inquiries regarding our puppies, and another family may be ready to reserve that same puppy. We encourage you to place a deposit as soon as you are ready! The puppy will be offered to the next family if we do not receive proof that the funds have been sent. Dorothy is a busy spit fire. She plays with other dogs and loves her toys. Loves all dog as long as they can handle her outgoing fast paced personality. On Jan. My vet found that she has grade 1 luxating petellas in both knees. She shows no clinical signs of issues, lameness or of being in pain. So her vet check really surprised me with this out come. I have attached my vets notes in pictures above. This 18 week old boy is available. He is a sweet goofy little man who is really wanting his fur ever family. Through no fault of his own he is available again. This little man deserves to find his new family. Never, ever, ever buy a dog registered with the CKC Continental Kennel Club if your intention is to breed, show, or stud the animal. The Continental Kennel Club is a giant scam. Mike Roy, the owner of the CKC, does not care about the quality of breeds or the animals he allows to be registered with his illegitimate company. This is especially true for rare and uncommon breeds such as the French Bulldog. The AKC hosts countless conformation, agility, and Best in Show events all over the country and world at large. There are endless titles and ranks professionally administered and presided over by the AKC. The AKC has in its posession over years of documented dog breed pedigrees. Their requirements for registering litters are stringent. Both parents must be AKC registered in order to register a litter. Pedigrees can be tracked right from the AKC website. Now Stop. Realize that the CKC offers none of this. The Continental Kennel Club does not offer reliable pedigrees for their registered dogs. From the very beginning, the AKC has approached breed management through stringent biology and documentation. Official AKC-accepted breeds are qualified by documented histories of registered litters between dams and sires dating back nearly years. The Continental Kennel Club cannot offer this reliability to you. The Continental Kennel Club Has No Registration Standard The CKC will allow anyone with any dog, regardless of pedigree, to register their litters and receive paperwork for free that looks like legitimate dog registration applications similar to what one would receive from an AKC-registered breeder. This is a continuation of the scam. The CKC requires only a handful of photos to register a dog as purebred. This means the degradation of the breed. The CKC exists purely as a scam to fool unsuspecting people into buying questionably bred dogs from breeders who do not want to adhere to the humane and stringent quality standards set forth by the AKC. Note Well: If you are absolutely in love with a puppy registered with the Continental Kennel Club, try to set your emotions aside and consider the ramifications of paying the breeder for the dog. We have personally dug up several puppy mills operating as legitimate breeders by simply looking up who registers their animals with the Continental Kennel Club. Nine times out of ten, the conditions were unfit for the animals and the owners were slapped with some nice legal charges for their hubris. When searching for a people, we encourage you to report anyone attempting to sell animals registered with the CKC, as it is an immediate red flag of sub-par breeding and it follows that cutting corners means poor conditions for the puppies and their parents. Females: pounds. Height Males: inches. Females: inches. However, the French Bulldog breed's distinguished breed heritage and intriguing history as a European companion dog place him on a level far above that of any swine. Modern French Bulldogs are descendants of large, ancient dogs that were kept by a Greek tribe known as the Molossians. The breed, known as the Molossus, is believed to have spread to other countries on the ships of seafaring peoples. Over time, the Molossus found its way to Britain, where British breeders created a new dog from his lineage: the Mastiff. Although the Mastiff's enormous physique has little in common with the petite French Bulldog, the breeds share a genetic link. Bullenbeissers were a subdivision of the mastiff lineage bred specifically for bullbaiting. Bullbaiting was a popular English blood sport during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in which bulls were tied to a pole with 30 feet of leash. A bullbaiting dog was bred to crawl on his stomach toward the bull, avoid being gored by the horns, and bite the enraged bull on the snout. Many bullbaiting dogs were maimed or killed fighting bulls, and the British Parliament banned the practice in by passing the Cruelty to Animals Act. When the British Parliament outlawed bullbaiting, breeders focused on more humane roles for the dogs to fulfill in society. Many owners appreciated the tenacity and strength of bullbaiting dogs and attempted to make smaller versions that would carry those traits into companionship roles. The bullbaiting dogs were mixed with smaller breeds, such as terriers and pugs, hoping to create a more compact version of the beloved Bulldog. Toy Bulldogs emerged in England during the first half of the nineteenth century. Far lighter than the original Bulldog, some weighed as little as 12 pounds. Toy-sized Bulldogs fit better with city life than their larger counterparts. Since toy Bulldogs were smaller and lighter, they were easier to carry, and many male and female workers of the British Industrial Revolution chose toy Bulldogs as their pets. Workers who left Britain to find jobs as lace workers in France popularized the breed in their host country. The breed's now iconic, bat-like ears became a desired trait that distinguished the French Bulldog from the toy Bulldog. French socialites, especially women, grew particularly fond of the peculiar-looking dog, and many chose the French Bulldog specifically for his exceeding patience during gossip sessions. The French Bulldog became an accessory to fashionable women since the dog's appearance with his art nouveau ears drew the attention of onlookers and passersby during walks. Miniature Bulldogs became so popular in France that, by the year , French demand had nearly outstripped the supply of pups being exported by British breeders. News of the French Bulldog spread further west in the latter half of the nineteenth century. As in France, America's most elite families fawned over the breed, including the Rockefellers and the Morgans. In the twenty-first century, the French Bulldog was recognized as one of the top twenty most popular breeds in the United States. Breed Characteristics Head: Somewhat brachycephalic skull-type, moderate in size, shaped rather square, and in proportion to the rest of the body. From the front, the topskull is flat, or nearly flat, between the ears. In profile, the topskull appears long and slightly rounded and should not appear short or flat. It should be free from excess skin and wrinkles. The muscles, including those of the cheeks and the temporal muscles, are well-developed. The superciliary arches and a furrow at the stop are prominent. The occiput is not prominent. The head is clean-cut without excess skin or wrinkles. Eyes: The eyes are moderate in size, open-oval to round in shape, set rather far apart from one another and from the ears, and as dark in color as possible or self-colored according to the coat in lighter dogs. The eyes are never bulging. There should be sufficient bone in the surrounding orbital sockets to protect the eyes. Eye rims are darkly pigmented and tight-fitting. There should be no looseness, and the whites of the eyes should not be visible when looking forward. The ears are never long, overly large, or broken. Muzzle: The muzzle is broad, deep, full, well-developed, and may be somewhat laid back. It should never be so short as to appear flat in profile. Upper and lower jaws are wide, have good bone substance, and are strong and well-developed, never appearing snipy or weak. The lower jaw and chin are just slightly upturned, well-developed, and visible from the front or in profile; however, they should never protrude beyond the break of the lips when the mouth is shut. A very slight roll of skin is permissible on the top of the muzzle; however, a roll-free muzzle is preferred for hygienic reasons. Nose: The nose is well-pigmented, black, or self-colored, according to the coat in non-standard color varieties. The nostrils are well-opened. Neck: Moderate length allows for a proud head carriage, strongly muscled, with a slight arch. The neck tapers smoothly from the deeper and broader body toward the head. The neck is clean-cut, without excess skin, throatiness, or dewlap. Chest: Deep and broad but never wider than deep. The brisket extends to the point of the elbows or just below. Body: Compact, solid, somewhat cobby, and of good substance. The body is never racy or refined. The width at the forequarters is approximately equal to the width at the hindquarters. Feet: Oval to round, compact, with well-arched toes and tough pads. Toes may be oriented slightly outward. Tail: Set somewhat low on the croup, thick at the base, and tapering toward the tip. The tail should be left natural and never docked short. Natural tails are of a short to medium length, with the tip of the last vertebrae extending to the hock joints, or less, when held down. The tail may be straight or gently curved. Inverted tails, corkscrew tails, and kinked tails are extremely undesirable and potentially unhealthy. Movement: The movement is powerful, free, energetic, and efficient. The characteristics of a healthy structure are evident. When moving away, the forelegs and rear pasterns should remain parallel to one another. When viewing movement from the front, the forelegs should remain parallel, with elbows and paws moving neither in nor out. From the rear, the back pads should be visible when the rear legs are extended. As speed increases, the forelimbs and hindlimbs will converge to the center line of gravity. From the side, the topline should remain firm and level. Good reach of movement in the front allows the forepaw to extend out in line with the nose. When extended, the width between the forefeet should be approximately equal to the width between the hindfeet when extended, indicating balance, good reach, and good drive. Dogs that exhibit any sign of breathing or locomotive difficulty shall be disqualified from the show ring. Temperament: The French Bulldog breed is well-known for their calm and well-mannered temperament. They are intelligent, capable of learning many different types of tricks and disciplines, and take any task they are given very seriously. They are devoted, playful, and alert. They are lively, gregarious, and get along well with people, other dogs, and other animals that they have been socialized to, making them an ideal family companion. Any unprovoked aggressive or fearful behavior toward people is incorrect for this breed. The ideal body height-to-length ratio is between and .The build is compact, solid, and sturdy without appearing cloddy. Males should appear masculine, being more substantial in size and mass, while females should appear more feminine and slightly less substantial. Neither should lack overall type. The weight of males or females is always in proportion to height. Lightweight: Up to 22 pounds Heavyweight: pounds Head General Appearance: Somewhat brachycephalic skull-type, moderate in size, shaped rather square, and in proportion to the rest of the body. Expression: Intelligent, inquisitive, friendly, and jaunty, although capable of appearing to be quite professional. Stop: The stop is definite, preferably forming at least a degree angle between the topskull and muzzle. Skull: The ideal muzzle-to-skull ratio is between to , with the topskull being longer than the muzzle. The ideal muzzle-to-skull axis is convergent. Lips or Flews: Lips are broad and thick but clean and fit tightly over the teeth and jaws. Cheeks: The cheeks are well-padded, broad, and well-developed, adding to the square appearance of the face. They should never appear chiseled or flat. Dentition and Bite: Forty-two strong, clean, and white teeth. The bite may be level, reverse-scissor, or undershot. The tongue and teeth should remain concealed when the mouth is closed. Body and Tail General Description: Compact, solid, somewhat cobby, and of good substance. Topline: Straight and level from withers to croup. A gentle arch at the loin area is tolerated. The back is broad, strongly muscled, and straight, yet supple. The loin is taut and may be flat, level, or slightly arched yet supportive. The back is never swayed or roached, and the croup should never rise higher than the withers. Croup: Gently sloped. Underline: A slight tuck-up is present or the underline may run parallel to the topline. The underline is taut and firm, without any indication of sagging or excess weight. Ribs: Long, well-sprung, well-laid-back, oval-shaped, never barrel-chested or slab-sided. Forequarters and Hindquarters Forequarters: The forequarters are always balanced with the hindquarters and well-angulated with well-laid-back shoulder blades. Shoulder blades are approximately equal in length to the upper arm and forearm. Elbows: The elbows are close to the body. The distance from the withers to the brisket may be equal to or greater than the distance from the elbows to the ground. Forelegs: Frontal View: Straight, of good muscle, solid bone, and parallel to one another. Side View: The forelimbs appear straight with strong pasterns. Pasterns: Never weak or broken. Hindquarters: The upper and lower thighs are equal in length, strong, sturdy, of solid bone, and well-muscled. Rear View: When viewed from the rear, the rear pasterns are parallel to one another. Side View: Good angulation will allow the rear toes to align with the point of the rump or within one to two paw-lengths behind the point of the rump, with the rear pasterns remaining perpendicular to the ground and parallel to one another. Stifle Joint: Well-angulated with a good bend to well-let-down rear pasterns. Angulations: The angulation of the hindquarters is always in balance with the angulation of the forequarters. Coat Skin: Well-fitted, yet supple. The skin should never obstruct the outline of the dog. Coat Type: The coat is short, smooth, soft, glossy, and close to the body throughout. No fringe or feather is permissible. Standard coat color variety: Cream, tan, fawn tan with black mask , brindle, all with or without white markings, solid white. Non-standard coat color variety: Any colors that occur in the French Bulldog that are not accepted as standard colors, which include: Black, mouse, gray, blue, liver, Isabella, all with or without tan or brindle points, all as fawn mask , all as brindle, all with or without brindle white. Movement The movement is powerful, free, energetic, and efficient. Temperament The French Bulldog breed is well-known for their calm and well-mannered temperament. Faults All dogs should be in proper healthy condition, free from disease or defect. Any departure from this description is considered a fault. Learn more about Dante - Click Here for additional information History of the German Boxer Dog While there are many theories as to the origin of the boxer, the breed is said to have reached its perfection in Germany within the past century. Most believe that the boxer comes from European line of dogs that have been around since the 16th century. Some evidence suggests that the boxer is one of the many descendants of the old fighting dog found in the high valleys of Tibet. It is also accepted that this breed is a cousin to just about all breeds within the bulldog type. The Dogue de Bordeaux of France is a breed that is similar in appearance and size to the old Tibetan Mastiff. The Bouldogue de Mida found in the south of France was apparently developed from the Dogue de Bordeaux, and it shares many of the same characteristics of the boxer. While it is generally believed that all the European breeds previously mentioned are in some way related to the boxer, this favorite breed of Germany was developed to retain all of its older qualities with a more attractive look. Other sources claim that the boxer was derived from two breeds of dog found in central Europe that no longer exist: the Danziger bullenbaiser and the Brabenter bullenbaiser. In this account, it is believed that in the s German hunters tried to create a new breed by crossing the bullenbaisers with mastiff-type dogs and bulldogs. This resulted in a tough yet agile dog that featured a streamlined body and a strong grip. This origin states that by , the new breed, called the boxer, had been established. The exact origin of the name boxer is rather obscure, but it may have taken from the German boxl. In addition to being related to the Bulldog, it is said that the boxer is also influenced by a strain of terrier. Others think that there is reason to believe that English Bulldogs were imported into Germany at one time, as evidenced by Reinagle's Bulldog, which was done in .This work of art depicts a bulldog that is very similar in appearance to the boxer. One of the first dogs to be used in military and police work, the boxer became better known as a family pet and show dog by the s. The boxer was first registered with the AKC in , but the first championship did not take place until .It was about before Americans showed interest in this breed, a time when the boxer won in Group and Best in Show. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for Missouri Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. Searching for the perfect German Shepherd puppy? When you think of a German Shepherd do you think of Rin Tintin? The typical characteristics of loyalty, fearlessness, and smarts make them an excellent companion and family dog. However, a German Shepherd isn't a great fit for everyone and every family. A German Shepherd is a very active dog and requires regular daily exercise. German Shepherds are extremely loyal and are very obedient providing the owner has adequate time to spend training and playing with the pup. German Shepherds are protective by nature and require a great deal of socialization throughout their life and being a major focus during the first year of life. In addition to regular vet visits, German Shepherds require regular grooming as they shed especially twice a year during season changes. German Shepherds bond very closely with their owners and don't do well being parted for long periods of time. German Shepherds can live for years so be prepared to have a partner for their life. This active intelligent breed does best when it has a "job" so be prepared to train, play, and bond with your shepherd. Many German Shepherds do well as family companion dogs when given enough exercise, mental stimulation, and love. Nadelhaus breeds purebred German Shepherds year round and we also import both German Shepherd puppies and adults direct from Europe for our clients. Long-haired German Shepherds are technically called a long coat German Shepherd, while a short-haired German Shepherd is called a normal coat or stock coat German Shepherd. Dogs with either coat have the same physiological structure and both have double coats: an undercoat and a top coat. The only difference between the two is the top coat. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. The double coat weathers and insulates the dogs—it protects them from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. The length of the coat of a German Shepherd has no impact on its ability as a working dog. What does a long haired German Shepherd look like? The skeleton and structure of a long-haired German Shepherd will be the same as a short-haired German Shepherd. Both dogs will have an undercoat, but the difference is that the top coat of a long-haired German Shepherd will be longer. The long coat GSD has longer and silkier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies? Nadelhaus breeds German Shepherds puppies year round and while the majority of puppies we sell are short hair, we do have occasionally have long haired puppies. We breed all our German Shepherds in the black and red color. If you are looking for a long haired adult German Shepherd, we can also import long-haired German Shepherds direct from Europe. Contact us for more information. Messages are NOT coming through to my email account right now. As a Graduated Vet tech, I have seen the misery of a poorly bred dog. Reviews: I can honestly say this is one of the best dog breeders I have ever talked to before. Billie and Mr. Pete are very knowledgeable about their animals and dedicated to providing them with the best care no matter the conditions. After a ton of e-mails, visits, phone calls, etc.I finally found Ravenhill. Before I get into the quality of dogs they have, let me start by saying how much I like Billie and Peter. They are honest, respectful, kind, and willing to help. The first time I called Billie we spoke for over an hour and she gave me so much useful information. She tells you what you need to hear! We visited Ravenhill in early December. We spent a couple hours with Billie, Peter, and their German Shepherds. She had all ages to look at, my favorite being Echo who was 9 weeks at the time. All her dogs are friendly. The quality of our puppy is amazing. This pup is beautiful, smart, and has a very good temperament. We are very happy we selected.Billie is very protective of her dogs. At first we thought it was kinda rude, but if you think about it, she is just a awesome dog breeder! She likes to keep her pups safe. Me and my family are very happy with the pups we got! If you are looking for a great breeder, with great dogs! Most of us read that book back in the 70's and know how this order takes problem dogs and uses very creative ways of correcting temperament issues, either created by breeding or the people that own the dogs. They also breed German Shepherds. I have had several people over the years that HAD dogs from that order, that have bought my dogs, because our philosophy was so similar. People that breed dogs should always try to put the highest quality on the ground with their breeding, not JUST because they have papers, but because they come from well bred dogs. Honor the breed, breed true to the standard, in both confirmation, temperament and health. Don't fall into the trap of "bigger is better" or "German Shepherds are always guard dogs". These are companion dogs, with herding and protective instincts, and should always be bred for balance, both in disposition and confirmation. Titled dogs have proven their ability to be trained to the highest level, they must pass a physical screening hips and elbows before they are trained, and trained before they are bred in the kennels of working and working showline dogs with the European breeders. Some can be "reserved", some lines are more friendly, both are acceptable. Always meet the parents, and siblings and ask lots of questions about your breeders experience, expertise and time they have put into the breed. So, I pass that quality on to my buyers, who want a well bred companion dog that can be trained, or carry the instincts of devotion to people. I had both import and American lines when I started, but focus on dogs from titled import show and working lines. Pups coming from titled dogs means that the dogs behind my dogs are bred by real GSD breeders, hips and elbows are checked before they are titled, and the imports all have their 1st title before they are ever bred. These dogs are sound, intelligent and are ideal companion dogs as well as personal protection and working dogs. I am very selective about the lines I have and the temperament associated with those lines. Dogs are either OFA'd through American testing or import testing, microchipped, at least 4 wormings and shots at appropriate ages. I became involved with the breed while in Vet Tech school in .I became involved with the Jack Russell terriers in .My dogs hailed from England, the country of origin. Most of what I had at the time were the smooth working lines but later became involved in showing in UKC. Puppies from my lines are clean breeding no inbreeding but I do line breed and genetically cleared breeding pairs out of English country of origin and Australia, often referred to as country of development lines. Actually both countries were developing dogs to suit their region and vermin problem, so there are several types, and in any given litter it is good to have all 3 coats represented. Shows more variation in the gene pool. They are born in the house and only let out side after 1st shots. They are family pets, Earthdogs, Barnhunt dogs, stable dogs, agility dogs. All coats should retain a "double coat". Ideally the ears tip, but occasionally they will be small enough and light enough that an ear will prick. This is fine for pets, not acceptable in the show ring however or as Earthdogs as dirt can enter the ear canal. Tails are NOT cut short like they were many years ago but left natural or "tipped" when the dew claws are removed to ensure that they are not too long and can be damaged if the dogs are used as "Earthdogs" and go underground. Pups can be held with a non-refundable deposit transferable to another litter with approved purchase. ALL the German Shepherds are bred to be family, personal companion and protection dogs. When placing a dog, I try to match temperament 1st, sex then color. My 4 Import showline males have good "drive" as well as great functional conformation for movement and athletic ability and breeding them to my working line females, makes the pups more manageable and easy to train, and not so hyper that they are harder to handle by older adults and children alike. Once brought into the family group, outsiders will be viewed with caution until they are cued otherwise. Ironically, her dam and granddam and sire all showed in the American venue quite successfully, one grandmother showed at Westminster several years back. But at home.Easy to handle, very focused, easy to train, all of my dogs exhibit trusting loyal temperaments, adaptable to a caring, loving, home. All want to please, but are NOT unmanageable!!! Good temperament is critical for training and socialization. A shy or overly aggressive dog is never a good fit for a family and is harder to train. They have to WANT to please you and will try to earn your praise. Fear biters are a liability and overly aggressive dogs have their own agenda. And although these dogs have a good strong bite and a good prey drive for training, they are not police or military hard. Review I was appreciative of getting, thank you. My wife wanted a German Shepherd for many many years. We began looking and came upon Ravenhill Russells and German Shepherds. .Without a shadow of a doubt we felt like this was the place to get our puppy. When we went to visit the potential mother, all dogs were well taken care of and very healthy. Billie was patient with our questions and guided us along the way. Our puppy is now almost 5 months old and we couldn't be happier. We have her in training and our instructor says she is one of the best puppies he has seen. He also can't get over how beautiful and well bred she is. We are always stopped on the street by people asking where we got her and without hesitation we recommend Ravenhill Kennel. Thank you Billie for a beautiful, loving and family friendly dog. This is what it's all about. Hi Billie, Thank you for taking the time and meeting with me and Woody Tuesday. We have named our little girl Sassafrass Sadie Belle Belle as a nod to her mother. We are calling her Sadie. Sweet, loving and playful and none of the skittishness behavior in my last Russell. Our Newfie is scared to death of her! He probably remembers Maggie and how she terrorized him. Once again, thank you! Deena M. We encourage all prospective puppy owners to do their research and be prepared with questions to ask the breeder. I don't sell show dogs. But people deserve to have a quality pet as well. So my dogs are breed from some of the best and proven foundation lines proven sound and of quality generation after generation. .People often say, I'm not looking for a show dog, I get that. But I will NOT breed anything less than my standard and respect the standard of the breed. All dogs at some point had a function. NOT just to not shed, even lap dogs kept royalty safe tucked in their sleeves and hands warm.I am sure they have other attributes. Rendell Beatty.
Collar, Harness, Or Both? Lab puppies start tiny but grow up extremely fast. Every pup grows up at its own tempo. If it has started to get too constricting at that point — either loosen it up if possible or get a new collar. If you get a collar with a lot of resizing leeway, it can last you a few months. This is very easy to judge if you just stick a couple of fingers under the collar. The risk of keeping an overly loose collar on your dog should be clear — the dog will be able to back out of the collar. Many others, however, including a lot of labs, love to back out of their collars whenever possible. Adult Labrador Neck Size So, what size collar will your lab puppy end up wearing when it grows up? If your puppy is smaller than average it may grow into a smaller-than-average adult lab or it may just be a slow grower. Different Types Of Dog Collars For Labs The main non-cosmetic differences between dog collars are in the materials and the fastening mechanism. Plus, they always allow for multiple different size settings. As for materials, these are the basics: Metal — a lot of people love metal, especially for mid-sized to large breeds like Labradors. Leather — this is the classic choice for dog collars. Its main drawback is that it can get stinky over time. This is especially true if your dog loves to swim and Labrador retrievers are a water dog breed. Fabric collars can come in a lot of different designs and compositions. Some of the more colorful ones are especially fun for puppies. Synthetic polyurethane-type materials — these intuitively put off some people but are an excellent choice. Training collars used to be very popular at one point for both puppies and adult dogs. These collars take many different forms — they can be pronged, pinching, and electro-shock collars. Their idea is simple — teach your dog not to pull on its leash with the negative reinforcements of the collar. Dog harnesses today are viewed as a better and safer alternative to training collars. These are used mostly for training and for adult dogs, however. You should start using those as soon as your pup is big enough. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Nylon, leather or made from metal? How wide and what size? Will one collar do for all occasions? Or should you buy a selection of collars for different situations? And how about harnesses and head halters? What are they for and should you consider them? What is a Dog Collar Actually For? First and foremost, a collar is for safety. It gives you the ability to restrain your Labrador. For instance when walking beside or crossing a busy street, to keep your Lab safely by your side a collar is essential to attach a line or leash. Without a collar, you cannot enforce control and your dog is free to wander off into danger. For identification purposes. In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order requires that any dog in a public place must have an ID tag with the name of their owner and address engraved on it so the owner can always be identified. This law applies to many other countries too and in some places, you should also attach your license and rabies tags. For use as a punishment during training, mostly for pulling on the leash. Some types of collar pinch, choke and prong collars are especially made for this purpose. There are electric shock collars, ultrasonic collars that emit a loud sound, others that vibrate and others still that spray a nasty scent. All types are activated any time a dog wearing such a collar barks, interrupting them and helping to stop the behavior. For control of parasites. Learn more about flea collars here. And the final reason for a collar… To make your Labrador look as cool or as cute as possible! There are many different colors, looks, and patterns to choose from, so you can have some fun :- How To Choose a Collar For Everyday Use There are literally thousands of fantastic looking, functional and good value collars you could choose for everyday use. Flat Or Round Collar? Personally, I think a classic flat style of collar looks best on the classic looking Labrador. So I recommend flat leather or Nylon webbing collars, with ID attached and a quick-release fastening for everyday use. These collars are designed to force open during a struggle if your Labrador should ever get their collar snagged and are a real life saver in these situations. English Labradors are larger than American Labradors, males are larger than females, genetics play a part and some labs carry more weight than others. But you need to know what width of collar best suits a Labrador, and then measure their neck to know the correct size. The width of a collar has a direct relationship to the amount of pressure the collar puts on your Labradors neck. But of course, a wider collar is heavier and can be uncomfortably rigid so you have to strike a balance. Also, very wide collars can look a bit silly on all but the very largest of dogs. My recommendation? A good 1. As a general rule of thumb, this means you want to measure the circumference of your Labs neck with a measuring tape and then add 2 inches. For example:You measure your Labradors neck to be 18 inches. Add 2 inches for a correct fit making the collar you need 20 inches. So for our example, we want to buy a collar with 20 inches in the center of what the collar says it fits. We should buy for instance, a collar to fit necks from 18 to 22 inches as 20 is in the middle and gives room for adjustment each way. To see a selection of the best collars, pre-selected as suitable for Labradors, all very highly rated by previous buyers, please click here. This creates a scenario where pulling causes a punishment and will decrease the behavior over time. Using them incorrectly and especially if ill-fitting, these collars can cause considerable harm and are considered by nearly all to be inhumane and should be avoided. However, there are some old-school, traditional trainers who swear by them in extreme cases, for strong and stubborn hard pullers when all other training avenues have failed. Having said that though, like most people, we do not condone them, believe they are inhumane and will not promote their use on this site. For a somewhat detailed discussion on the use of prong collars, please click here. This collar can be very dangerous to use with the potential to cause permanent damage to your Labrador if used incorrectly. So extreme caution and education is needed before anybody ever considers using this collar. However, like the prong collar, we do not condone them and believe they should never be used and will not be promoted here. How to Use Training Collars If anybody does ever decide to use a prong or choke collar, please have a professional trainer show you how first. The idea is definitely not to asphyxiate the dog into submission! Luckily there are now many methods to train a Labrador to walk nicely beside you without the use of such collars. Therefore I will rarely discuss their use on this site and certainly do not recommend their purchase or use. No exceptions please, always remove these collars when not training! There are also slip leads, harnesses, and halters to consider that are more suitable for use in specific situations. These are often used by working dog owners who want to avoid a traditional collar as they can be a choking hazard on a dog that spends time running through undergrowth. If yours is the type of dog who spends a lot of time off leash in bushes and undergrowth, then I can certainly recommend the use of a slip lead. To see the slip leads we highly recommend at Labrador Training HQ, please click here. The harnesses I would recommend are front clipped no pull solution dog harnesses that are a good choice for those with Labs that are determined pullers. This contrasts with a back clip harness where a dog can really put his whole weight and strength into pulling, such as the harnesses you see on a husky! Head Halters A halter for a dog looks much like a halter for a horse and has the same use. With a halter, when you or your Labrador pulls on the leash their head is pulled downwards or off to the side. This makes it very hard for the dog to pull forward as this would cause their head to be pulled even further down or to the side. This results in the dog stopping and over time teaches them that pulling only leads to stopping so they soon learn not to pull. So a halter is a useful training aid for walking a Labrador that pulls obsessively. But paths, fields and parks are mostly unlit and this is a dangerous situation for your Labrador to be in. Wearing a high visibility or even LED collar eliminates this danger and allows everybody to see where your Labrador is in the dark. You can see and read more about our pick of the two best high vis, LED lit collars by clicking here. The last thing you want is it to break when on a walk so you cannot restrain your Lab. During this check, also make sure the collar is adjusted to fit well as your dogs weight and coat thickness may fluctuate between seasons. A Few Final Tips! Bacteria can grow under a sweaty damp collar, taking it off regularly will help decrease this and the associated, very unwanted smell! This raises less suspicion than if they had the wrong name and makes it easier for them to sell the dog on. Collars Recommended By Us So which collar should you buy? I actually recommend the purchase of 3 different collars for 3 different uses. For everyday use, I recommend a flat collar with a quick release or buckle fastener, made from leather or synthetic fibers. For when you take your lab out swimming or hiking, I recommend a quick release collar no belt style buckle or rope slip-lead, removing the possibility of a collar snagging and becoming a choke risk. Finally, I recommend a high visibility collar for wearing in the dark, so you and others can more easily see your dog which can help prevent accidents on dark country roads and paths, whilst helping you not to lose sight of him and worry all the time. You need to attach ID tags to collars while out in public in the UK and many other countries. Prong collars, choke-chains, halters and harnesses I would never buy or recommend. CHECK OUT 9 Things that are 4 meters long As your dog grows and begins to reach its adult weight, you can still use the weight method to figure out a rough collar size. When should a puppy first wear a collar? Some puppies may have already been wearing soft breakaway collars for training or to distinguish them from their littermates. This can make training, particularly leash training, much easier in the future. Collar Types There are several collar options available, and picking the right type is often as important as choosing the correct size. Leather collars are durable and stylish. Nylon collars are also comfortable for the dog and are available in a number of colors and patterns. Plastic collars are also available for dogs that tend to swim a lot or are frequently dirty. Harnesses are an excellent training tool for puppies that are just learning to walk on a leash. They can curb bad leash habits, such as pulling. Harnesses can be switched out for a collar as the dog grows, or you can upgrade to an adult harness size. Sharing is caring! When it comes to puppies, particularly short-haired breeds, you should look for a soft collar made of a non-abrasive material. Fabric collars are a good option, and collars made from a breathable fabric that is also machine washable are even better. When should a puppy wear a collar? Even if your puppy is still too young to go outside for walks, getting them used to wearing a collar is a good idea and will prevent any tiny tantrums further down the road! Collars should be worn most of the time, even around the house, but taking it off every so often to let the skin breathe is recommended. Try leaving the collar off for a couple of hours every time you brush or bathe them. Can an 8-week-old puppy wear a collar? Responsible breeders recommend puppies should not be brought home until 8 weeks old, and you can start getting them used to their collar shortly after this. It may be a good idea to let them settle into their new environment before introducing something new, but getting them used to their collar in their second week at home is a good idea. Should puppies wear collars at night? Most dog collars are designed to be non-abrasive, and perfectly safe for pups and older dogs to sleep in. This can also help puppies get adjusted to wearing a collar for the majority of the time. However, many vets also recommend including a contact telephone number, in the event your dog goes missing. Although microchipping has been mandatory for pet dogs since , tags are still a legal requirement and provide a quicker way to get in contact with you if your dog is found, without their microchip needing to be scanned first. It is all rather bewildering, but there is no need to worry! This is where you can find the answers to those questions, and get some ideas and inspiration too. Collars are a great way to identify similar Lab puppies in a litter Labrador Dog Collars and the Law In many parts of the world, dogs must legally wear a collar when out in public. This is usually a disk attached to the collar, with your phone number and name on it. Collars can display IDs in a number of different ways. Some collars come with a brass or stainless steel plate attached to the surface, others have a metal ring for you to attach a tag onto. Others will embroider the ID into fabric or tool it into leather. Are Personalized Dog Collars Safe? But others feel that this is a dangerous thing to do. But most dogs are always supervised when outdoors, and many dogs are also microchipped so proof of ownership is more easily accomplished. Unless your dog is very friendly and spends time outdoors on his own, having his name on his collar is unlikely to put him at risk. Collars as a Fashion Statement A collar is the traditional way of attaching a restraint to a dog, for the purposes of keeping him safe. Before harnesses were invented this was an essential feature of life in a modern world, where cars and other hazards are everywhere. But in many homes and families, a collar has become something of a fashion statement too. A whole industry has arisen to meet the demand for different fabrics and styles. Training Collars for Labs Many people look on a collar, as an aid to training their dog how to walk on a leash. A way to get their dog to tread along nicely next to them, without dragging or pulling them along. They want to choose a collar that will best help them in this goal. Prong collars and pinch collars have been designed that are uncomfortable and even painful when a dog leans into them. The problem of course, is that pulling is often very rewarding for a dog he gets nearer to the destination he likes. So collars usually have to be quite painful if they are to successfully stop the pulling. Collars that can be used to pinch and choke dogs, are becoming less popular, as more and more dog owners want to train without using unpleasant aversives. And fortunately there are now excellent ways of teaching a dog to walk nicely without using collars at all. And in the meantime you might find it helpful to have a strong pulling dog fitted with a body harness that will give you more control without damaging his neck. Before you set off on a Labrador collar shopping expedition, you will need to think about sizes. And to know your Labrador neck size. Labrador Collar Size Not all collars are made in sizes large enough for an adult Lab. And one adult Lab will not have the same neck size as another. So you do need to whip out your tape measure in order to avoid disappointment Both my Labs have an 18 inch neck. They are medium build slim Labradors. But it really is best to measure. If you find it difficult to keep your dog still, just get someone to dip their fingers in some butter and let the dog lick it off while you take his measurements! Collars for adult Labs are usually about an inch wide — this allows enough space for a small ID plaque if desired. What Size Collar for a Lab Puppy? If you buy a puppy collar two or three inches longer than this it will last him a few weeks. Puppy collars are usually narrower than adult collars, half an inch is fine. And they come in some very cute designs. We have put together a collection of our favorite puppy collars to inspire you! So what kind of collar should you buy? Which Labrador Collar Style? We recommend that you buy your Labrador a flat collar with a buckle fastener. You can choose one to suit your taste and wallet. Especially if your Lab likes to swim. You can buy waterproof collars made from synthetic polyurethane type materials. Waterproof collars tend to resist odor and are easy to clean. They often come in striking bright colors — we love them and think they look cool! But not so loose that he can back out of it. You should be able to fit two or three fingers under it quite easily, but not much more. A collar that is too loose can be slipped by a lively dog very easily. It is also worth considering alternative forms of restraint. Especially for puppies and lively young dogs that can get very sore necks if leashed to a collar. Buying a Harness The breadth of choice in body harnesses for dogs has burgeoned in the last couple of years as people discover how great they are. A body harness is an excellent way to restrain a young dog that has not been taught to walk to heel. It has several advantages over a collar. It is almost impossible for the dog to slip out of. And most importantly, a puppy that wears a harness is not learning to lean into or pull, on his collar. However, we selected them for inclusion independently, and all of the views expressed in this article are our own.
