MANY breeders of imported Golden Retrievers have now adopted a practice of getting FCI health testing done on puppies and dogs under a year of age by unscrupulous breeders overseas. These tests are done before hips and elbows are developed and before possible hip dysplasia will show up. How We Raise Our Puppies There are always three experienced adults working full time raising our puppies a husband, wife, and adult daughter. If we should have more than two litters that overlap, our other adult daughter will also help. When puppies are here, they are our priority. Everything else in our lives takes a back seat to the puppies so we can work full time around the clock doing puppy work. Our home is large enough for all puppies to be raised inside our home. We have five doggy doors to five different puppy play yards where puppies over 5 weeks freely live coming in and out of our home. We have almost a dozen fenced areas, and a total of nine acres fenced for our dogs and puppies. By far, most that try to earn it fail. Tara and Karen earned the required points in less than a year and a half including time off for Tara to whelp and raise a litter of puppies and for Karen to raise and train dozens of other puppies. There were less than 70 dogs to earn it nationwide in .Karen has also recently won Combined High in Trial on the last day of the Southeastern regional competition. There are eleven regions in the U. The regional competitions are where the best competitors in the country compete to earn invitations to the National Obedience Competition the NOC. The NOC is the most prestigious obedience event in the country. Each region hosts only one regional competition a year and the NOC happens only once a year as well. Tara has also been invited to perform obedience at the Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster. Positive Reinforcement Training Only! Karen is one of very few trainers in the competitive obedience world who uses exclusively positive reinforcement training. If you decide to buy this particular book, I think you will also benefit from a newer program like Robert Milner, Retriever Training for the Duck Hunter There are lots of professional trainers that still rely on what they learned from this classic. It is another older book. There are lots of professional trainers today that got their start in these pages. Researchers have learned a lot in the last 10 years about training dogs through scientifically-based principles. Even with these advances, trainers continue to base their programs on these traditional approaches. This book, even though it is a little old, will help you get a finished retriever from beginning to the end. The one knock against this book, however, is that the diagrams of the drills were a little more specific. At the end of each chapter, Milner addresses how to cure some of the bad habits that your dog may develop along the way. What if the pup eats the bird? What if the pup runs away from me with a bumper? I think it is a good idea to read this book—even if you decide to follow a more modern program to incorporate what researchers have learned over the last 10 years. Spencer does a great job of educating the reader not only what to do, but why you should do it. The Dahls have a strong focus on the front half of training. If you are new to the game, then this is what you need to spend your time mastering with your dog. The methods are typically in the positive reinforcement approaches to training. I am still researching the difference between positive and aversive training methods. If you are interested in what I have learned so far, here is an article on clicker training its benefits. One of the things that I like about this approach is its focus on shorter training sessions. Too many people think that training a retriever takes too long. If you are a responsible dog owner, then you have time to train a retriever. I only say that because every responsible retriever owner should already be spending at least some time outside with their pup. So if there are some Weimaraner genes floating around in a silver Labrador, that wouldn't bother me. On the other hand, if I wanted a dog who could be counted on to look and act like a Lab, you're more likely to get that in a Lab who isn't silver, especially if the silver breeder is still using Weimaraners in his breeding program. And based on the appearance of some silver "Labs", there are breeders who are still crossing in Weimaraners. But almost certainly silver Labrador Retrievers are here to stay. Even though they can't be shown, the AKC still accepts them for registration. However, in a funny twist, those registration papers don't say silver. Remember, the AKC says that Labs can only be black, chocolate, or yellow. So they register silver Labs as Chocolate, because they consider silver to be a dilution of the chocolate gene. So, a mixed breed could easily have a solid coat in one of these colors. Do purebred Labs have white on them? The current Labrador breed standard is very clear on what a purebred Labrador should look like. But not all Labradors meet that standard. But equally a mismark can occur in purebred Labrador Retriever puppies too. Common Lab Mismarkings Big white chest patches are fairly common in mismarked Labs.
