With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water.

If they are little mischievous, a name like Bane could be fitting. For a calm and gentle pup, consider a gender neutral name like River. Keep in mind that some names, like Jack or Rose, naturally lean gender-neutral for obvious reasons. Off topic, but could Jack have fit on that door? This will haunt us forever. Anyway, back to the point. Names related to their size or color can be a fun choice. Test the name out loud. Say it repeatedly to see if it feels comfortable and rolls off your tongue easily. A positive response, like wagging their tail, is a good sign. Bowie: Speaking go gender-neutral, why not naming your dog after the one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century? Let the people decide. Kai: This name exists in many cultures, so whatever meaning you wish to apply to it is up to you. But we can all agree that this is a cool name for any dog. Jedi: The Jedi Council really appreciated diversity. Phoenix: Fan of the late River Phoenix or his brother? Also a fan of the X-Men? What more do you want? Every year we realize a new Kennedy exists. Might as well add one more. Ziggy: See Bowie above. But there is one kind of cooking that always goes over well in my home — making homemade dog treat recipes. Margaret O. I could not be happier. A mentally healthy dog is so important. Our little guy came to us in an unexpected unique way. After a previous family was unable to take him, Jeff called us and asked if we were interested in coming out to meet the puppy that same day! They are willing to sit and talk through any questions you have, they give you a lot of information about the breed, and what to expect when you bring your puppy home. Another big plus for us was seeing that the kennels were clean and all the dogs that we saw looked very healthy. Our puppy was the sweetest when he first met us! He ran up to us, showered us in puppy kisses, and was just overall a happy chill little dude. He just had his first vet appointment and was given a clean bill of health! He is sweet, gentle, and such a fast learner! I have never met any dog with this level of intelligence and at such a young age! We have only had him for 6 days and he has settled in so quick and has already learned basic commands. Thank you so much Jeff and Rhonda for our new little addition to our family! When we first went to meet with them and take a peek at Adrian and Barus litter, we liked that they had all the dogs in the home and the home was clean!!! Adrian had a calm temperament as well as the rest of the dogs. Caught on extremely quick w the training and is extremely good with our young grandchildren. We definitely chose the right breeders. Good communication and great canine genetics are obvious! Response from the owner Thank you so much April for the kind words. Rhonda and I try very hard to make things special for our puppy families. H gets to play fight likes that and playing with his ball. Rhonda was spectacular to work with, detailed and friendly. She is one of the most intelligent, healthy puppies we have ever owned and her temperament with our family is world class. When we were looking for a puppy we met with Rhonda and could not of been happier. There dogs were so well behaved, stunningly gorgeous and just wanted to be loved. If a female German Shepherd dog GSD has joined your family, and you are thinking about breeding from her, you may be curious about how many puppies you should expect in one litter — as well as how many she might have over her years with you. On average, a German Shepherd can have puppies per litter. Some have as many as 15 or as few as one puppy per litter. On record, the biggest German Shepherd litter was 17 puppies by a dog named Mosha. The gestation period is approximately 63 days about two months after conceiving. However, this number may vary by several days. A German Shepherd dog can have two litters per year until around the age of 8. This means that a German Shepherd Dog can have approximately 14 litters in her entire lifetime. Well, the answer to this may help you understand the quantity of puppies they produce in a litter. The German Shepherd is native to Germany and is a cross breed between working sheep dogs and a dog believed to be a quarter wolf. They were originally bred to protect families and to herd livestock. Are there factors that affect the number of puppies a female German Shepherd can have? How many times in a year can they give birth? Knowing how many puppies to expect may help you plan resources to accommodate them if you are planning on becoming a breeder. A female German Shepherd with a small body will have a smaller litter size compared to a GSD with a bigger body. If you want a larger litter size, therefore, you should breed your German Shepherd before they are seven years or older. The best breeding years are between 2- 5 years of age. As the male dog ages, their sperm count decreases, and this affects the number of puppies in the litter. If you are a breeder, it is best to practice breeding when the male dog is in its prime years, between 2- 5 years. This way, you are likely to get a bigger litter size. The female should also have a healthy diet before breeding. Diet and health go hand in hand. A diet that consists of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates will help your GSD to have a larger litter size. Your vet will help you determine the perfect diet before, during, and after your dog's pregnancy. Although it may be nerve-wracking, you need to be there to help your German Shepherd give birth. A whelping box with a heating pad or a heating lamp will help keep the new-born puppies warm. New-born puppies are unable to regulate their body temperature, hence why the heating pad or lamp will come in handy. Heating pads: place them under the blankets or towels where the puppies lie. Make sure the setting is comfortable for them. At birth, they weigh about 0. German Shepherd dog puppies have four developmental life stages after they are born. You will notice the mother licking her puppies to clean them. Milk from their mother is very crucial at this age. They can begin eating some main foods but still nurse and feed on soft foods. By eight weeks, a puppy has all its teeth, and the teething process begins. At this time, you should ensure each puppy starts to wear a properly-fitted dog collar. For added security, choose a collar that allows you to track their location via GPS. Final Thoughts Owning a dog is a joyous experience, and when you own a German Shepherd, you have a loyal, smart, fierce, and protective dog for life. To add to that, German Shepherd dogs make good mothers and they know what to do during and after giving birth. German Shepherds are a large breed, so larger litters are often expected. Though most dog breeds give birth to 5 to 6 puppies, the average litter size of a German Shepherd is 8. Several years later, in , another German Shepherd birthed a whopping 16 puppies —the largest litter the Leamington Spa Charity has ever seen in its 60 years of breeding dogs. It's during this time that they can get pregnant. A normal heat cycle lasts between two to four weeks long on average. You can take her outside to play, as long as it's in a secure enclosure like your backyard. Apart from the breed itself, there are a ton of factors that affect a German Shepherd's litter size. You can use these factors to predict approximately how many puppies your German Shepherd will give birth to when the time comes. Size It goes without saying that the larger your German Shepherd, the larger her potential litter. This is because biologically, larger dogs can safely carry more babies. Puppies can either stop growing during the developmental stage or be reabsorbed by the mother's body. Some of the puppies may also be miscarried. The same is said with German Shepherds with underlying health conditions like diabetes or obesity. Both parents need to be in excellent health to maximize the litter count. Age The age of both parents also affects the size of the litter, with the female's age more important than the male's age. German Shepherds under the age of 7 produce larger litters than German Shepherds over the same age. Additionally, German Shepherds bred after the age of 5 may have smaller litters in the future, as opposed to those bred earlier than 5. No matter the age, the first litter will be smaller than the upcoming litter. As for the stud, the older the male gets, the fewer his sperm count. Larger litters will likely occur if the male is under the age of 5 when bred with a female. Heritability Dogs tend to inherit their mother's litter size potential, so long as they're healthy. If you've purchased your German Shepherd from a reputable breeder, you can contact the breeder and ask them how many litters your pup's mother would produce on average. Nutrition Nutrition is a major factor in determining a dog's litter size and health. This is why numerous nutritional guidelines for pregnant dogs exist. Poorly fed pregnant dogs don't have the required nutritional support to produce a large litter. Therefore, providing high-quality food throughout the pregnancy is crucial. Pregnant dogs have different nutritional requirements than non-pregnant dogs. They also need high amounts of soluble carbohydrates, as well as calcium and phosphorous for puppy bone formation and nursing. Pregnant dogs that are fed a balanced diet without supplements produce the largest litter. High doses of supplements may kill developing puppies, reducing the litter size. It should be no different for your dog. But you need to help him. The Ultimate Guide to Dog Health is the answer. This handy guide will help you recognize the symptoms of the health problems above. Get the knowledge to stay ahead of these terrible issues that can rob your lovely dog from vigor and life. Like humans, the most reliable way to tell how many puppies a German Shepherd is having is through ultrasound examination. The veterinarian can scan your pregnant dog's belly and generate images of her uterus. Through this, you can count how many puppies your German Shepherd will likely have. That said, the images aren't usually of the highest quality. The ultrasound might fool you into thinking there's only one puppy when there's actually two or even three. And since puppies tend to huddle up together, you might also mistake two puppies with one big puppy. As such, take the images with a grain of salt. Ultrasound examinations are usually done at around 45 days of gestation. It's during this time that puppies' bones have developed and calcified, allowing you to see their shapes on screen. Different dog breeds have different gestation periods. Some give birth after only 60 days, while others give birth after 80 days. Some even surpass the day threshold, like Dalmatians. German Shepherds fall in the day category. On average, German Shepherds give birth after approximately nine weeks or roughly 58 to 68 days. Veterinarians can predict your dog's due date with an ultrasound scan, so you can prepare weeks beforehand. If your German Shepherd's gestation period lasts longer than the predicted due date, contact your veterinarian immediately to avoid future complications. Paul S. Paul enjoys doing the hard research to collect, analyze and present our dogtemperament. Aug 3, Share German Shepherds tend to have between five and nine puppies in a litter. Eight is the average. According to the AKC , the largest litter registered was 17 puppies. This litter size is significantly larger than some other breeds. German Shepherds are larger dogs, so they are going to have more puppies than smaller breeds. For instance, Dachshunds only have one to six puppies on average. The largest litter ever came from a Neapolitan Mastiff, a breed that can reach pounds. When it comes to litter sizes, size does matter. It is impossible to tell how many puppies that a particular dog might have until she gets further into her pregnancy. These factors may help you make a good guess, however. This is most obvious when comparing different dog breeds. In turn, small breeds have small litters. However, the exact size of the dog also matters. Smaller German Shepherds will have smaller litters on average than larger German Shepherds. If your dog is larger, she may end up having a larger litter, or she might not. This will reduce the overall size of the litter. Even if you feed her excellent food and take care of her, underlying health problems can cause puppies to perish before they are fully developed. Diabetes is an excellent example of this. However, improperly fluctuating blood sugar can have a massive impact on growing puppies. Without the proper blood sugar levels, many puppies will not develop properly. Short-term conditions can also cause some puppies to develop improperly and be reabsorbed. For instance, infections can cause one or more puppies to stop developing altogether. Most miscarriages go unnoticed without any clinical signs, especially if only a few puppies are lost. Only late-term miscarriages usually get noticed. This seems to happen most commonly in purebred dogs, according to the vets at High Street Steeping Vet Clinic. Purebred dogs may have more genetic abnormalities than mixed breed dogs because they inherit traits from a smaller genetic pool. The odds of them inheriting something harmful is higher, simply because there are fewer genes for them to inherit. Many purebred dogs are also inbred, including the German Shepherd. Middle-aged German Shepherds tend to have larger litters than younger and older dogs. German Shepherds typically have the largest litters around age 5. After that, they may decline in size. However, this decline is more rapid and apparent in some dogs than others. Many older dogs have health problems, which likely affects their litter size too. Some of these health impacts may go unnoticed and therefore, be wrongly attributed to age. Season There is evidence that the season that the dog gives birth affects the litter size. However, other studies found no correlation between when the litter was born and the overall litter size. There may be a regional component to this, though. In areas with more significant seasonal changes, the season may make more of a difference. In the tropics, it may not. However, more studies are needed to determine this possibility. Heritability Studies have found that dogs may inherit their litter size potential. Dogs that are born to bigger litters tend to have bigger litters themselves. If there is another factor at play, it will likely take precedent. Plus, much of this heritability may be linked to the size of the dog. Many dogs are going to be a similar size as their parents. Nutrition Image Credit: Monika Wisniewska, Shutterstock There are a few nutritional components that can affect litter size and the overall health of the mother and her puppies. When a mother dog becomes pregnant, her nutritional needs change. Protein is essential for pregnant dogs. This is similar to what puppies need, so many pregnant dogs are often fed puppy-intended dog food. Fatty acids may also play a role. Dogs with lower levels of serum glucose in their amniotic fluid tend to have smaller litter sizes. Therefore, feeding them a diet higher in omega fatty acids may be helpful. Image Credit: J. Feeding your canine a better diet may result in a bigger litter, for instance. If your dog is sick, it is paramount that you treat them before attempting to create a litter. However, these factors have to be adjusted before the dog gets pregnant. Once the dog has conceived, it is impossible to increase their litter size, though you can prevent losses. There are also many factors out of your control. While there are a few things that you can do to reduce the risk of these issues, you can never prevent them entirely. Even if your dog lives in a clean environment and is healthy, infections can still occur. You should be feeding her food suitable for puppies as soon as you plan on breeding her or at least as soon as you find out that she is pregnant. Choosing which dogs to breed also impacts litter size and can be controlled to a certain extent. However, some dogs may have small litter sizes but may otherwise be great breeding candidates. In general, to increase your dog's litter size, we recommend doing the following: Regular testing for infections Regular vet checks for reproductive tract disease Final Thoughts The average German Shepherd litter size is about eight puppies. However, there are many factors that can go into this. Keeping your dog healthy is essential to maximizing litter sizes. But many factors are outside of your control. If a puppy inherits specific genes, they are less likely to develop correctly and make it to birth, lowering the overall litter size. Related Reads:. Some Facts and Trivia About German Shepherd Dogs I thought it would be interesting to kick off this post with some facts and trivia about German Shepherds so that we can all know this unique dog better! These dogs are renowned for their intelligence, and many of them are capable of quickly picking up new behaviors. They also have a strong desire to collaborate and work with us humans, a quality that many interpret as a desire to win over their owners. It makes sense why this breed is a top Obedience competitor and excels at so many different activities. German Shepherds served as Red Cross dogs, rescuers, guard dogs, messengers, and sentries in World War One, displaying their courage on the battlefield alongside their German soldier counterparts. Some even carried ammunition! It is believed that they do that too to make sense of the commands we give. A German Shepherd Dog most commonly has anywhere between six and ten puppies in one litter, with the average being eight. The mother will often have her first litter at age two and then another every year after that until she is about seven years old. There is no way to predict the exact amount, but there are a number of factors that can affect how many puppies a female GSD will have in a litter, such as the age of the parents, the number of previous litters, health, and diet. I will elaborate on these in the sections down below. In theory, GSDs do not experience menopause and can carry on reproducing until they die. Like other dogs, they experience two heat cycles a year, and each cycle lasts between six and eight months. Just because they can mate twice a year does not mean they should. German Shepherds should never be bred more than four to six times in their lifetime and should never be mated more than once a year. This is to guarantee that it can be spayed and continue to have a good life after retirement. Something else to note is the fact that there are countries that legally limit the number of times a dog can be bred in its lifetime, and that number is usually 4 to 6 times. In the US, the American Kennel Club AKC does not accept registrations for dams that are bred over the age of 12 and under 8 months, and sires that are over the age of 12 and under 7 months. Age of the dam In general, as a dam matures, the size of her litter shrinks. That does not mean that you breed your dog as young as possible though. They need time to reach maturity and that usually means waiting till they are around 2 years of age. Once your GSD breeds again after the first two litters, you should plan to have one or two extra puppies since, oddly enough, the first couple of litters are often smaller than the succeeding litters. I should also emphasize that breeding a dog after the age of eight is not advised because it is too late to have puppies and may result in health problems for both the mother and the puppies. If possible, you should stop reproducing your dog much before that and have it spayed, as this would improve its health in general. Occasionally, breeders will utilize artificial insemination to aid in breeding elderly males. The simple fact is that a weak or sickly mother will give birth to a poor puppy. For instance, if the mother is overweight, she can have joint problems and, like a human mother, make labor and delivery more difficult. In order to prevent obesity, which will cause unnecessary problems, avoid overfeeding your dog. The best diet for a pregnant dog is one that is wholesome, balanced, and palatable. Size of dog Despite the fact that German Shepherds are a large dog breed, there are size variations between them too. A larger female GSD might give birth to more puppies than a smaller one. She will probably have a sizable first litter if she was born into a sizable litter herself. On the other hand, if your girl herself was born in a small litter, you can probably expect that she will have a small first litter. Type of breeding Given how easily it could become complicated, this is actually a subject that is best left for another essay. In reality, however, the process of reproduction can also have a significant impact on the number of puppies. For instance, when inbreeding is prevalent, the quality of a litter may be affected. In this case, the litter will be smaller, which will also affect the health of the puppies by lowering their life expectancy and raising their risk of acquiring genetic defects. The closer the relationships between the dogs become, the more likely it is that these issues will arise. Linebreeding , on the other hand, aims to maintain sufficient genetic diversity while preserving the best genes from a bloodline, making it frequently a safer method of dog breeding. Time of breeding It is said that a dam is more likely to have a larger litter size the closer she is to ovulation. This is defined as the period after the estrogen period when the Luteinizing hormone triggers ovulation. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any studies supporting this theory, so at this point, I would say this factor is probably not that significant. Despite the fact that GSDs are technically able to start reproducing once they reach their first heat cycle, this behavior is typically discouraged. The first heat cycle usually occurs when the dog is 6 months old, which is far too young to begin reproducing. In order to give your dog enough time to develop sexually and put on weight and size, it is advised to wait until she is at least in her second heat cycle. In fact, the majority of ethical breeders will wait until that 2 years old before breeding them since a dog will have passed all required medical checks by that time. Most female GSDs go through their first heat cycle between the ages of 9 and 12 months, common for larger dog breeds. A useful rule of thumb is that it will go into heat at about the same age that its mother did. Bloody discharge, receptivity to male dogs, agitated behavior, and many other symptoms can be signs of a dog in heat. Health A healthy German shepherd will produce many healthy puppies compared to an unhealthy one. Always take your GSD to a vet clinic to confirm that she is in a healthy state. This is because the larger ones have a bigger carrying capacity. Diet Diet plays a crucial role in influencing the size of the litter of a GSD. Feed her a balanced diet rather than only kibble throughout. Age German shepherds are more fertile between the ages of two to three years. If she gets older than that age, she is less likely to deliver a large litter. Individual Genetic Factors If a German shepherd delivers a large first litter the chances are that she will do the same in the second and the third litter. Gestation period for a GSD Their pregnancies take around 64 days which is a little more than other dogs. This is influenced by their bigger size. What to Expect of a Pregnant German Shepherd Change in Appetite The appetite might increase or decrease depending on the stage of pregnancy. She can show signs of morning sickness like vomiting. In case of a reduced appetite, you should try to feed her her favorite meal. Decrease in Activity If your GSD feels exhausted most of the time, she will be taking a nap more than usual. If your dog likes sleeping a lot, this sign might go unnoticed. Unless you have confirmed that she is pregnant, sleeping a lot should be seen as a red flag especially for active dogs. Behavior Change Behavior change will depend on an individual dog. Some German shepherds will seek extra attention and will be around you most of the time, while others will like isolation and will be hostile whenever you get closer to them. Her abdomen will enlarge, though this is among the last signs of pregnancy. This should not worry you as she will be back to her normal size once she delivers. The nipples might get dark red in color. Other times the milk might leak in the late stage of pregnancy. Frequent Urination A female German shepherd can increase the no of times she urinates during pregnancy. Sometimes it can be territory marking. She can pee anywhere, in the living room, the seat, or in the corner of a room. Nesting Behavior During the last stage of pregnancy, she will start preparing a place for the expected puppies. She will shred anything from blankets, newspapers, or clothes and keep them in her nest. Proper Feeding Feed your expectant German shepherd a balanced diet. Buy her the best dog food you can afford. It is advisable to increase the quantity of food you feed her. Instead of giving her a lot of food at once, divide the food into smaller portions and give it to her many times. This is to ensure that that the mother and the unborn puppies are healthy. Give Her space Due to hormonal changes, your dog will have mood swings. If she is not willing to eat or play do not compel her. Just give her space to be herself. Whelping Box A whelping box is set on the last stage of German shepherd pregnancy. It is a safe and comfortable place equipped with all the necessities needed for safe delivery. The place should be noise-free. Bottom Line German shepherds are caring parents. In rare cases, German shepherds eat their newborns. Be watchful to avoid such instances. Related Posts:. Puppies If your German Shepherd is pregnant or you are planning on breeding you may be wondering how many puppies can a German Shepherd have. The amount of puppies each German Shepherd has will vary on many different factors. This article will answer dive into the factors to help you better predict the number of puppies your GSD will have. Generally, you can expect a German Shepherd to have between 5 and 8 puppies per litter. However, German Shepherds have had litters as large as 14 and as small as only 1. There are many factors that contribute to the size of the litter. A German Shepherd can have puppies twice a year. Large dogs like German Shepherds go into heat around every 6 months. During their heat is when they are capable of becoming pregnant. A normal heat cycle lasts between two and four weeks long. Thus, if you breeders or individuals who are looking to breed their GSD track their heat timing and plan to have them mate during their heat. German Shepherds are pregnant for nine weeks on average. Factors That Affect German Shepherd Littler Size Although it is normal for a German Shepherd to have between five and eight puppies a litter, there are many factors that can increase or decrease the litter size. The most common factors are below: The size of the female dog The size of the dog has a big impact of how many puppies they can carry. Although German Shepherds are considered to be a large dog breed some female German Shepherds are larger than others. A female GSD that is larger will be able to carry more pups than a smaller one. Inbreeding Another factor that can contribute to litter size is inbreeding. A pregnancy that is the result of inbreeding will generally produce less puppies than one that is not. Accordingly, if you want to increase your GSD litter size make sure not to bred a female with a male that is related. The age of female The age of the female German Shepherds also plays a role in their potential litter size. Older German Shepherds will generally have smaller litters. The prime age to breed a GSD is between 2 and 5 years of age. You should not breed an elderly GSD. Just like with human males, the sperm count of male German Shepherds will decrease as they age. This decrease can make it harder for them to get a female pregnant and can also impact the litter size if they do get a female GSD pregnant. Health of the female Another factor that is important is the overall health of the female German Shepherd. In order for any dog to produce a healthy plentiful litter of puppies the dog carrying the pups has to be in prime health. Leading up to pregnancy your dog should be fed a high-quality diet, and during pregnancy a GSD will require a diet in that a certain amount of protein, fat and carbohydrates to ensure a health pregnancy. Additionally, pregnant German Shepherds can sometimes need dietary supplements if they are not getting the appropriate nutrients through their diet. Conclusion There are many factors that impact how many puppies German Shepherds can have. Most commonly German Shepherds will have between five and eight puppies, but age, health, and inbreeding can cause a GSD to bear a smaller litter. Breeders who are looking to increase litter size will need to make sure that all those controllable factors are in line and let nature do the rest. A junior is the canine version of a teenager, and this is usually the time period between six and twelve months old. Adult dogs have completely finished growing and range between one and seven years old, while mature dog is at least seven years old. After this age, the dog will then be considered middle-aged. The ages of the last two categories will depend on the breed. A senior dog is an older dog that has reached the final quarter of its life expectancy. Since a German Shepherd has a life expectancy between 12 and 14 years, it will enter its senior years when it is between nine and .A geriatric dog is one that has reached the end of its stated life expectancy — and is still going strong. If Gunther the German Shepherd makes it to 15, he is considered geriatric. Is it true that dogs age seven years for every human year? She says it may have stemmed from an observation that dogs lived to be 10 years old, while humans lived to be 70 on average. It is true that dogs age much faster than humans, but the extent and speed of this process depends on many factors. Larger dogs tend to age faster and have shorter life expectancies than smaller dogs. The AKC divides dogs into four size categories: Small 20 pounds or under Medium 21 to 50 pounds Large 51 to pounds Giant Over pounds An adult male German Shepherd usually weighs between 66 and 88 pounds, and an adult female generally weighs between 49 and 73 pounds. Then, until they reach the age of five, they age four years every year. Large dogs that are over five years old then generally age five or six years every year, and a German Shepherd that lives to be 14 is comparable to a human of .How many puppies can German Shepherds have? It is born completely helpless and depends on its mother for everything; it even needs her help to go to the bathroom. The puppy will typically start to crawl when it is a week old, and its eyes will open a few days later. The first baby teeth emerge when the puppy is two weeks old, and it will start going to the bathroom on its own around the same time. The socialization period lasts from the third to the twelfth week. Then, when the puppy can move, see, and hear, it needs to learn the social skills that will enable it to successfully interact with humans and other dogs. However, it still needs to stay with its mother during this time, so she can teach it proper dog behavior and other vital life skills. German Shepherds this age should also be introduced to humans to begin getting used to their presence. They will generally begin playing with their littermates and their humans when they are about four weeks old. Puppies that are at least seven weeks old can then be housebroken. The following video covers the growth and development of a German Shepherd puppy from when it is seven weeks old to six months old. The owner noted such physical changes as increasingly erect ears and darkening fur. The juvenile period lasts from three to six months and ends when the dog reaches sexual maturity. By this age, the puppy has all of its baby teeth. The puppy will be old enough for obedience school towards the end of the juvenile period. By the time a German Shepherd is six months old , it will look mostly like an adult dog, but it has not yet finished growing. It will have reached about 70 percent of its adult height and weight, and it will also have all of its adult teeth. German Shepherds, at this age should be spayed or neutered unless their owner plans to breed them.

Santa Margarita, CA .Hi Julia, Everyday I say that I am going to sit down and write to update you, and everyday just keeps getting away from me. I honestly have no idea how you kept up with soooooo many pups at once. We have had him just over two weeks and I have not gotten a stitch of work done. Thank goodness I have my own business and work for myself or I would have had to fire me! I just figured to heck with it, he is only going to be little once and I want to take advantage of this time and enjoy it and use it to train him as much as possible. I know it will pay off in the end. Before I start bragging and carrying on about him, I would just like to preface it with.He has settled in so well from the very beginning. He was soooo good in the kennel. We never had any whining or anything. Housebreaking is going very well. His record for no accidents in the house so far is two whole days and he goes to the door when he has to go now. He absolutely seems to understand what "Potty" means and what he is suppose to do. I took him to the vet right away after he came home and the vet said he was absolutely perfect I already knew that! He had a fecal exam done , it was of course negative. A week later at nine weeks he had his vaccines and the Dr. I found the trainer that I had used for my other dogs. I had started with him almost 15 years ago he had since moved to LA. Anyway, he still comes out this way for a few clients so he agreed to work with us again. I am so happy about that because I already know and use his basic methods, I just need some brushing up and re-training. He started last week and he has progressed so well already.I have progressed too, I had forgotten more than I like to admit. The only thing that I am questioning is if I am feeding him too much??? He was ten weeks yesterday and weighs exactly 16 pounds. He is still just strictly on the Natures Domain. I didn't want to change too much of anything at the beginning. I am feeding him one cup of food, three times a day at six hour intervals. He looks great to me, but of course acts like he could eat double what I am feeding him. I am trying really hard not to look into those big brown eyes and give in and give him more! The doctor had a formula but thought that you would be more of an expert in that area than he would since you raise them so he wants me to check with you just to be sure. I would appreciate your thoughts on this and how I will know when and how much to increase. I am sending you some pictures of him I took at nine weeks. I hope they come thru to you OK. I even set up a little Thanksgiving photo shoot for him.My kids think I am over the top, but I don't care, he is too cute to not be over the top! Anyway, he is just a joy, we are sooooooo happy with him. We want to thank you over and over again! Talk to you soon!

Getting one of these Bernedoodles are still considered a Doodle. But there are some things that you should consider before settling on one. They are not the most hypoallergenic of all the Doodles. It will shed a great deal and likely have a loose wavy coat. That being said, a Bernedoodle mixed with an Australian Labradoodle will still have a fantastic temperament. Since they are mostly Bernese Mountain Dog, they will retain more of these qualities than a Poodle or Lab. If any of these traits will be an issue for you, talk to your breeder about concerns. Asking them how they breed their phantoms will give you a better idea of what to expect. They will be happy to answer all of your questions about how this mix will differ for you. Do Phantoms Have Different Care? A Bernedoodle is a Bernedoodle. Here is a quick overview of what to expect. They are quick to train and love to please their owners. You will get them trained in no time at all. And as far as exercise, your Bernedoodle will need an hour-long walk daily with some playtime in between. Both of these will be hypoallergenic with minimal shedding. That means you will need to spend time every day brushing and detangling your Doodle. It also means that they will need regular hair cuts every weeks. Size Next one of the facts to be considered about the phantom Bernedoodle, is size. When full grown, it should be the same as any other color mutations. There are two sizes of Bernedoodle, the mini and standard. Standard Bernedoodles get as large as pounds. But the mini only gets pounds. The only exception to these standards is multigenerational Bernedoodles. Breeders might be trying to breed for a specific size, but it is not guaranteed. Since there are just too many factors at play, sometimes the phantom mini Bernedoodle can be a little larger than expected. Health Conditions No matter what color your Bernedoodle is, they are all prone to the same health conditions. Some old myths revolve around the fact that hair color has some indicator of medical conditions a dog will have. Is There A Cost Difference? Phantoms can be a little rare sometimes, which translates into a higher cost. Cost is another one of the facts that may be considered when purchasing a phantom Bernedoodle. The more rare the phantom morph, the higher the price. You might be waiting for months for a litter to be born with phantom markings. And even if a few are born, you might not be at the top of the picklist. In the end, the wait is worth it for a striking puppy that grows into a handsome dog. As you can see, different color Bernedoodles are all the same. But if time and money are an issue, there might be some advantages of getting one color over the other. If you want a Bernedoodle as soon as possible, getting a solid colored puppy would cut your wait time to just a few months. There is also money to consider. They might not look exactly like you pictured, but they will still love you with the same Bernedoodle passion. Conclusion So what there are a few of my facts about the Phantom Bernedoodle,? An adorable, photogenic, and stunning looking puppy. Not a ghost Bernedoodle, contrary to what you might first think. Below is a Pinterest friendly photo…. Sharing is caring! Are phantom Bernedoodles good pets? What is a Phantom Bernedoodle? The Phantom Bernedoodle is a designer dog which combines the intelligence of the Poodle with the calm, easy-going nature of the Bernese Mountain dog. But no two Bernedoodles are the same, and a puppy can inherit traits and characteristics from one or both parents making the outcome unpredictable. Where does the Phantom Bernedoodle Come from? The Bernedoodle is a relatively new breed which came about in in Canada and is considered one of the best Doodles around! However, the parent breeds, the Poodle and Bernese Mountain dog have a long, rich history as working dogs. To understand this mixed breed better, we must look at its heritage. The Standard Poodle originates from Germany and is intelligent, fun, and easy to train. Their excellent temperament and non-shedding coat are some of the main reasons they are used so often for crossbreeding. The Poodle comes from a long line of hard-working animals bred to retrieve game from the water and have excellent swimming skills. As well as standard, Poodles come in miniature and toy sizes. The Bernese Mountain dog hails from Switzerland and is a highly versatile working dog developed to pull carts, herd cattle, guard farms, and be a loyal companion. They are good-natured dogs who show unconditional love and loyalty to their owners. Phantom Bernedoodle Appearance The appearance of a Phantom Bernedoodle is challenging to predict as the outcome can vary dramatically depending on which parent their genes tend to favor. The phantom coloring is where the dog has one main color with light tips of another color. Bernese Mountain dogs sport black, tan and white coats, whereas Poodles come in a much wider range of solid coat colors. Most Bernedoodles have a wavy, low shedding coat, but those with a curly coat like the Poodle will not shed. Although this mixed breed can have straight hair like the Bernese Mountain dog, it is rare. Phantom Bernedoodle Size You can find the Phantom Bernedoodle in three different sizes: standard, miniature and toy. The standard size ranges from 23 to 29 inches in height, weighing 70 to 90 pounds, while a mini Phantom Bernedoodle can vary from 18 to 22 inches high and weighs 25 to 49 pounds. Finally, the Toy or Tiny Phantom Bernedoodle measures 12 to 17 inches tall and weighs between 10 to 24 pounds. In this case, the Bernese Mountain dog is always the mother as too many problems would occur in labour with a Poodle mother. Grooming A Phantom Bernedoodle Most Phantom Bernedoodles have a curly or wavy low shedding coat that requires frequent brushing to prevent painful matting. Remember, though, that dogs with curly coats need regular haircuts by a professional groomer. A Phantom Bernedoodle with a straight coat is less maintenance but will shed all year round, so it is unsuitable for those with allergies. These dogs come with a sense of humour, and their hilarious antics will always put a smile on your face! This playful mixed breed is friendly and affectionate, patient with children, and devoted to its family. However, the downside is that they hate being left alone and can become anxious and destructive if they are on their own for long periods. The Phantom Bernese is an intelligent dog, but despite their steady and calm temperaments, they show a stubborn side in training and prefer to do things their way. Training and Exercise Despite the parent breeds having a working background, the Phantom Bernese has moderate exercise requirements needing approximately 30 to 60 minutes daily to keep them happy and healthy. However, much depends on their size, age, and personality. When it comes to training, the Phantom Bernadoodle always wants to be with its owner, so you need to train them to your schedule and lifestyle. Although they inherit the intelligence of the Poodle, they can also inherit the stubbornness of the Bernese Mountain dog, which can make training challenging. If you start their training and socialization early, you will find that much of their stubbornness goes away. Always use positive reinforcement to encourage them to have good behavior and social skills. Potential Health Issues The Bernese Mountain dog has a few health problems, like cancer, and is short-lived, living an expected lifespan of only seven years which is one of the main reasons they crossbred them with the healthy, long-living Poodle. The Phantom Bernedoodle is prone to health issues and conditions such as: hip dysplasia. They are also called Brown Phantom Bernedoodles. While by definition Phantom Bernedoodles have a two-toned coat, the merle patches are considered to be one color with the solid patches as the other. Sable Phantom Bernedoodle Sable Phantom Bernedoodles mainly have hairs that black-tipped with roots in a lighter color. The sable hairs cover most of their body and they have tan patches on their chin, throat, chest, legs, beneath their tail, above their eyes and on the sides of their muzzle. Unfurnished Phantom Bernedoodle Unfurnished Phantom Bernedoodles have the phantom pattern but do not have longer hair on their face like the typical Bernedoodle. Unfurnished Bernedoodles are not as popular as Furnished Bernedoodles the typical Bernedoodle as they are not as fluffy and look more like a Bernese Mountain Dog than a Poodle. It is the smallest version of the Phantom Bernedoodle. They are also referred to as Micro-Mini Phantom Bernedoodles. A fully grown Tiny Phantom Bernedoodle gets to 12 to 17 inches .A Tiny Phantom Bernedoodle reaches its full size between 8 and 10 months. They are the second smallest version of the Bernedoodle. A fully grown Mini Phantom Bernedoodle gets to 18 to 22 inches .They reach their full size between 10 and 12 months of age. They are usually a second generation F2 Bernedoodle which is the result of breeding 2 first generation standard size Bernedoodles that are on the smaller side together. They can also be bred first generation F1 by breeding a standard Poodle with a Bernese Mountain Dog that are both on the smaller side. A Medium Phantom Bernedoodle has a height range of 20 to 26 inches .They are fully grown between 11 and 14 months of age. A full size Phantom Bernedoodle is 23 to 29 inches .They reach their full adult size between 1 year 6 months and 2 years old. This coat is useful for repelling water and keeping them cool in warmer temperatures — and warm in cooler ones. Their coat is also noted to be slightly dry and oily. Chocolate Lab coat care is fairly minimal and considered low maintenance. The coat should be brushed with a firm bristle brush 2 — 3 times per month to minimize shedding. In addition to that, baths are needed fairly infrequently. What is more crucial is ensuring that their toenails are well cared for throughout the year. Meet Chocolate Lab Puppies for Sale. Similar to the other standard coat colors of Labrador Retrievers, Chocolate Labs are energetic dogs that get along well in a family setting. As a Retriever, they also make great hunting dogs and have also been known to fill other working dog roles including service dogs, guide dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and more. They are even one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units. A point of interest is that all modern Chocolate Labrador Retrievers can be traced to three specific Black Labradors that lived during the s. Chocolate Labs are industrious little pups. They were bred for retrieval and will often sniff about for something to get into. They are also one of the most affectionate dog breeds and absolutely love being with their favorite humans. Properly socialized and well-trained, Labs are one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They are famously even-tempered and playful. This makes them fantastic dogs for a growing family, as they tend to be gentle and patient with little ones. They can have a high prey drive. They usually do well with small pets within the family that they have been raised with or socialized around, but likely will still have the urge to chase other animals while out and about. They also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. After all, strangers are just more people to give them attention and play with them. Chocolate Labrador Retrievers may be high-energy dogs, but they are also highly adaptable. They will thrive in homes with fenced yards where they can run freely. They can adapt well to apartment living as well as long as they get plenty of daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation. Their natural urge to dig and bark when they are bored or agitated can be quelled with a little training and exercise. Although they can handle some alone time, Labs love to be with their families and thrive on attention from them, so they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Chocolate Labs also have a water-resistant double coat that makes them well-suited for most habitable climates. As with most dogs, they are sensitive to heat. Although they can handle some cold and will likely love to play in the snow, they are not a snow dog breed and may need to bundle up while out on walks in areas with harsher winters. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Chocolate Labrador Retriever can include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, hereditary myopathy, and heart disease. There is also a condition with a genetic link called exercise-induced collapse EIC , which can occur in young adult Labradors. Carriers of this can be identified by DNA tests and it is advised that breeders test for this and avoid practices that would produce the disease. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, Labrador Retrievers are at a higher risk for bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can quickly become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Chocolate Labrador Retrievers are incredible companions and are also one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Their energy can make them a handful at times, but their intelligence, adaptability, patience with people, and eagerness to please make them easy to train. Labs are one of the smartest dog breeds , so they pick up on things easily. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive reward and praise, a Chocolate Lab will do their best to respond as expected and will often exceed expectations. Chocolate Labs have a short, water-resistant coat that will shed year-round. Brushing a few times a week, daily brushing during seasonal shedding, and the occasional bath are all that are needed to keep a Lab coat healthy and looking great. They may need baths more often if they are avid swimmers, go on a lot of outdoor adventures, and get dirty a lot. Floppy ears tend to trap dirt, moisture, and debris. Proper dental care for dogs is imperative to help prevent painful dental diseases like gum disease or tooth decay later in life. You can also supplement your dental care efforts with vet-approved dental hygiene chews. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds and need a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough, but your Chocolate Labrador will likely be up for more activity if you are. But in the early days, we recommend keeping them close to you at night. It will help them feel safe and cared for — leaving their litter is quite a big step, after all. Your puppy may be unsettled and will most likely need at least one toilet break through the night. It will all be okay in a few weeks time, though. The crate should be a cosy warm den for your puppy. Soft blankets and a cuddly toy should do the trick to help them settle. It is also a good idea to cover over the sides but keep the front uncovered so your pup can still see out. Just before bed, take your pup out for one last toilet stop. With that beautiful voice of yours, gently reassure them and rest your hand in the crate so they know you are there. When your puppy wakes up in the night they definitely will at some point , listen to see if they are settling back down. Expect to be out at or am to take them straight to the loo. They will be bursting! That just about covers the first steps of Labradoodle sleep training. Very tired. But early mornings, late nights and disturbed sleep are all part of owning a puppy. As they mature emotionally and settle into their new home they will be happy in other parts of the house, and even outside of their crate. Having them in your room does not cause separation anxiety later on. Stick to a routine! Consistency is everything. It will backfire on you. Check out our guide on how to get a puppy to sleep through the night for more tips. Alone Training Labradoodles are very sociable. That can mean two things — they will always be happy to see you and that being alone can be challenging for them. This will help them feel at ease without you and also help them love their crate a little bit more too. While they are eating, go and do something close by. No need to go completely out of sight, but try not to focus on your puppy either. Labradoodles love to eat, so use this time wisely to distract them away from you. Just a few seconds is good enough in the early stages. Repeat: Practice makes perfect! Do this exercise at least once a day to build up alone time, and check out our guide to puppy separation anxiety. We expand on our little secret in our puppy toilet training article. Every 30 minutes, after eating, sleeping or playing. Socialization Exercises to do This Week Early socialisation is important for all puppies. It gives them confidence and teaches them to view the world in an optimistic way. Here are some puppy socialisation exercises to do with your Labradoodle. Let your Labradoodle Puppy Explore the Garden The garden is a great way to introduce your puppy to the great outdoors. They will also get used to walking on different types of surfaces such as your tiled, wet lawn or open flower beds. To get them there, here is a quick exercise you can run through: Exploring different surfaces exercise Have plenty of treats ready. Only use safe surfaces, nothing too slippery. Gather surfaces such as: A piece of carpet A large tray with a thin layer of water A large piece of tin foil or cardboard, something that makes a noise. Put the surfaces out on the floor and let your puppy investigate. Let them take their time and go at their own pace. In our experience Labradoodles are quite food motivated, and you can probably use a low or medium value treat for this. You can even try to use their kibble as many will be delighted to work for their food. For more info on what rewards to use check out our article on rewards and treats. Teach your puppy their name One of the first things your puppy will learn from you is their name. Fortunately, teaching a Labradoodle puppy their name is rather simple. Pretty easy, right? Practice this a few times everyday until they start flipping their head at you every time you call their name. Make sure everyone in the family uses the same name too! Teach your puppy to sit Labradoodle training is often started by teaching them how to sit. We call this a marker word. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow with a tasty treat. Bits of smelly sausage or cheese will definitely do the trick. If this happens, try to keep it simple at first and just use their own kibble if they are motivated to work for it. Save the big guns in treat terms for when you really need it! How to do it Always begin training at home. The outside world is far too exciting at the moment, and your puppy will probably not focus on you. Stand in front of your pup with a treat in your hand and place the treat on their nose, then bring it up to your waist. Recall — How to teach your Labradoodle puppy to come back when called Your puppy should have a good grasp of their name by now, which should make recall training pretty straightforward. Pun intended. How to do it You will need plenty of those high value treats and your best cheery voice. Call your puppy only once! This is super important as you want them to learn that their name only has to be called once for them to react to it. How to do it Get your puppy excited by showing them their favourite toy and making it come to life by waving it around. Once they are interested in the toy, throw it a short distance away from you. With that lovely singing voice of yours, encourage them to bring it back to you. When they do, swap the toy in their mouth for another identical toy. Repeat about 5 times and practice everyday. Get your puppy excited by showing them their favourite toy and making it come to life by waving it around. Prevention of Resource Guarding This part of Labradoodle training is important — it will prevent resource guarding by teaching your puppy how to give up items willingly. Resource guarding is this thing that happens when dogs are unwilling to give up items back, or when they get protective over something from humans or other dogs. From the training tips above, preventing resource guarding always comes down to a good swapping. Resource guarding starts when we force our dogs as puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. To avoid that, resist your temptation to reach deep inside their mouths to get whatever it is they have. Ultimately, we want our puppies to be willing to give things up when we need them to. What we really mean is care, handling, health and grooming. Start by just showing them the brush and running it over them with the flat side so they get used to the sensation minus the bristles. Hand Touch and Handling If you handle your puppy too roughly or grab at them, not only are they going to have a bit of a fright, but it could make them feel scared about being touched in the future. Use plenty of treats, and remember to stop if they walk away. Touch should be a pleasant thing not forced. Week 2 — Training your Labradoodle puppy Week 2 already! Socialisation exercises to do this week Training to do this week Husbandry Tasks to do this week — Fireworks — Watch the world go by outside your house — Play dress up. The Labradoodle was one of the very first designer dogs. The first planned Labradoodle litters were born in Australia in the late s. A Labradoodle has the potential to be a great family pet, and so they have remained one of the most popular mixed breed dogs. Although these curly haired dogs are frequently described as hypoallergenic, this is actually a myth. However, they do usually shed less than other breeds. If they are your first puppy, you might be surprised just how much time and energy is required to care for something so small. Even though this is an exciting time, it can also be frustrating. Challenges include everything from housebreaking and crate training to socialization and constant chewing. Remember that everything is brand new for your furry companion. Consistency and schedules are key to meeting navigating the next few weeks and not getting overwhelmed. Like any mixed breed, there is an element of unpredictability when it comes to what a Labradoodle puppy will look like. They can take on a combination of traits from either parent, and even within a single litter, puppies can vary in size and appearance. The list of colors they can come is almost endless. Labradoodle puppies with a Standard Poodle parent typically weigh between 7 and 12 lbs at 8 weeks of age. But miniature Labradoodle puppies may only weigh 4 to 7 lbs. Just like for human babies, sleep is very important for puppies. To help them settle overnight in your home, keep them in a crate or high-sided box by your bed for the first few nights. Potty Training Your 8 Week Old Labradoodle For most people, potty training is the first hurdle when they get home with a new puppy. At 8 weeks old you can expect your Labradoodle to need to pee at least every 2 hours. Young dogs have small bladders, and very little conscious control over when they go. Even the most diligent puppy parents find a few wet spots on their floor at the beginning, but visiting the backyard regularly will keep accidents to a minimum. Be consistent and praise your pup whenever he uses the toilet in the right place. Clean up mistakes quietly and without scolding. They might also overcome that fear by hiding from you to pee indoors. Feed your puppy the same food they had with the breeder for about 2 weeks. Then slowly mix it with the new food, gradually increasing the proportion of new food over the course of a week. For the time being, an 8 week old puppy needs their daily ration of food divided into four meals. But you might use most of it up as training treats! It can also trigger short spell of diarrhea. Small, regular meals prevent hypoglycemia, which is when blood sugar levels become dangerously low. Your pup also needs a food which is designed to meet the specific nutritional needs of growing puppies. This will protect him against conditions like hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is a malformation of the hip joint. There are hereditary and environmental factors which can make it worse — and one is if their diet causes their bones to grow faster than the cartilage in between them. An 8 week old Labradoodle will have all their baby teeth, and though tiny, they are very sharp and deliver a painful nip! Wear close fitting clothes in sturdy fabrics, and shoes without laces for the time being. If they try to chew your fingers, take your hands away and give them a suitable substitute like a chew toy. Puppy biting generally ceases at around 6 months once they have all their adult teeth. Crate Training Your 8 Week Old Labradoodle When done properly, crate training provides a safe den for your puppy to rest in. It can also help with toilet training, and keeping your puppy safe while your bring in groceries or take a shower. And 8 weeks old is a great age to start this process. To ensure he views his crate as an inviting place to be, furnish it with a cozy blanket and treats. From 3 weeks old until about 12 weeks old, puppies are in an important phase called the socialization window. They are more open forming positive impressions of the world around them than they ever will be again. So this is the time to introduce them to all the people, places and things they will encounter as adult dogs. Make sure all these introductions are happy lots of treats! And they will carry that happy association with them through the rest of their life. As Your Labradoodle Puppy Grows Labradoodles are known to be sociable, easy-going, devoted, and highly energetic. Training should be positive and consistent. But working out where to start can be bewildering. As with any mixed breed, they can take on the traits of one of the parent breeds or any combination of both of them. With a Golden Retriever Mix, the goal is to get the highly-trainable, super-friendly, and sweet nature of the Golden Retriever and the best traits of the other dog in the cross. Because there can be variation in the puppies, you will want to ask the breeder about the other dog in the cross. This will give you an idea of what other traits you could be dealing with in a Golden Retriever Mix puppy. A Golden Retriever is known as the quintessential friendly dog with a happy-go-lucky personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They also tend to be good with strangers as they are more interested in making friends. The other dog breed in the cross could provide some other traits and variations to this, but your Golden Retriever Mix puppy should have a similar disposition to the Golden Retriever. Golden Retriever Mixes tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in larger homes with room to run and can adapt well to apartment living. As long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and affection, they tend to be quite happy wherever they live. Golden Retrievers do well in most climates and are sensitive to heat, as with most dog breeds. Your Golden Retriever Mix should be about the same. A mixed breed can take on potential health concerns related to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Overall, a Golden Retriever Mix should be a relatively healthy dog breed. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing on genetic conditions to puppies. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Golden Retrievers are famously easy to train, which makes them a great fit for owners of all experience levels. Depending on the other parent breed, there may be a chance that your Golden Retriever Mix could have an independent or stubborn streak. In this case, you will want to be prepared for puppy training and obedience classes in case you want a little help in dealing with stubbornness. Classes are a great idea either way because they help strengthen the bond you have with your puppy and are also a great opportunity to socialize your puppy. Golden Retrievers tend to have a medium-length coat that sheds moderately year-round and requires brushing a few times a week. Bathing is usually on an as-needed basis. This may be the same for your Golden Retriever Mix or their coat could require more or less grooming depending on the other parent breed. Monthly nail trimming is usually sufficient to keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks and careful cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Golden Retrievers are high-energy dogs. Your Golden Retriever Mix will likely be the same. Even if the other parent breed is a low or moderate-energy dog, you will need to be prepared to deal with a high-energy dog. Daily walks, playtime, plus extra activity are a must for dogs with a lot of energy. Be prepared to try a lot of different activities to find your favorites. Teach your dog to play frisbee , go for a swim, go running together, try taking a few hikes, go on trips to the dog park, and more. A Golden Retriever is a medium-sized dog breed that stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Your Golden Retriever Mix could be the same or they could take after the other parent breed. Make sure you talk to the breeder about the other breed in the mix and meet the mother dog. This can give you a good idea of what size to expect as your Golden Retriever Mix puppy grows. Golden Retrievers generally live years. Unless the life span of the other parent breed varies largely from this range, you should be able to expect something similar from your Golden Retriever Mix. Featured Golden Retriever Mix Article. If you love the amazing personality of a Golden Retriever and the small size and loyalty of a Cocker Spaniel, you may love a Cocker Spaniel Golden Retriever mix. What do Golden Cocker Retrievers look like? These Golden Cocker Retrievers come in several sizes, colors and looks. They come in all the same coat colors as a normal Cocker Spaniel but commonly come in white, red, golden and tan. First generation cocker golden mix dogs have more floppy ears. When breeding a second and third generation, there is usually a higher percentage of Golden Retrievers in the mix. The golden retriever mixed with cocker spaniel puppies can often be referred to as "Miniature Golden Retrievers" or "Golden Minis". These puppies can look very much like a "Mini Golden Retriever" and have many of the same personality traits. When they are puppies you can see the Cocker Spaniel showing up in their eyes. They look almost angry, but it often fades with age. Here is a male Cocker Spaniel mix at 7 weeks old and again at 3 months old. The size depends on the parents of the puppies. In a first generation cocker spaniel golden retreiver mix you need to look at the size of the Golden Retriever used. The most common problem I see in the Cocker Spaniel Golden mix is some litters are more mouthy. They nip at anything moving which sometimes includes hands. Most are not, but it does happen every now and again. Remember that Cocker Spaniels were originally bred to be working dogs that kept livestock together by nipping at their heels. They also love to chase moving objects which is fantastic if you like playing fetch with your puppy but can scare children that don't know how to behave around a puppy. Two purebred parents will have more of a Cocker Spaniel look. Make sure to ask what they expect the full grown Golden Cocker Retriever to weigh. It will only be an estimate and there are no guarantees but it is good to get an idea. Also ask what kind of health testing was done on the parents of the litter.
