When you look at the difference which can be made in these terms, by helping your Lab to stay slim you could be giving him an incredible two more years with you! It could also help to find healthier alternatives to your usual training treats. Bear in mind that if your dog is unwell, old or very young , it is sensible to consult your vet before tampering with his diet. It is also a good idea to have a chat with them beforehand if your dog is very overweight and has a lot to lose. Take a photo of him from above and from the side before you start. At the end of the three to four days, check the dog over as described above and ask yourself if he is still fat. If you think he has improved a little but needs to slim down a bit further, keep going for another three to four days then review the situation. The foods we feed our pets are very calorie dense tipping out between and kilocalories per cup. For our 66 pound Labrador, she needs approximately kilocalories per day or 2. This does not take into consideration snacks and treats which all add calories. Our dogs need exercise to keep lean and burn off calories. Running is the best way to burn off calories, but walking also helps. Sixty to ninety minutes of walking per day every day is needed to keep dogs fit and lean. Obesity is fast becoming if not already an epidemic affecting our pets. Planning meals and exercise can help prevent our pets from getting heavy and, if they do pack on the pounds, creating a plan for weight loss will allow them to live longer more comfortable lives.

With regards to PC, the use of an external, compressive splint for the correction of the deformity has been documented in one canine patient ; however, this resulted in cyanosis and difficulty breathing, and was promptly removed. The prognosis for chest bone deformities in canines may vary depending on the severity of the abnormality. Overall, PE is considered to have a good prognosis in young animals , and even severe cases can do well with surgical correction. In humans, PC prognosis is considered to be excellent, with many affected individuals remaining asymptomatic. Similarly, symptoms in affected dogs tend to be mild, if noted at all. As such, a good prognosis is expected.
