We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. After moving into a small country home just outside the city, they began to research home security options. Ultimately, this led to their first purchase of the worlds most loyal, protective, friendly, and intimidating canine: the German Shepherd. Since then, their shepherds have brought fun to their days and peace of mind to their nights! The Rutt's German Shepherds have been a huge gift to their family, and they are proud to breed quality GSDs that will be a gift to other families as well. Check out his father, Renzo vom Wolpertinger Wald. He loves kids and gets along well with other pets. His medium drive and desire to please his owner has made him an easy dog to train. This guy is adaptable, smart, and the ideal dog for any family. She is very protective but great with kids and very playful. She is great for the family, and serves as a faithful guard dog. Her working-line drive and keen sense of smell has made her an essential part of tracking and recovering MANY deer. More than anything, she loves retrieving sticks we throw into the pond. She keeps a keen eye on the Rutt farm and is often the first to let strangers know they haven't gone unnoticed. She loves to play, run, and swim, and is usually the first to let us know when someone has pulled into our country-driveway. She's got tons of drive and a great ear for visitors. In fact, two of her littermates were purchased for the New York Police Department. Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Quality working line German Shepherds Responsibly bred for health and temperament. Our dogs are always tested for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and degenerative myelopathy at a minimum. We also do full Embark panels that test for hundreds of different genetic health issues. Being our German Shepherds are working line, they possess a tremendous amount of intelligence and desire to work and please their leader. When appropriately trained and stimulated, they make excellent family companions and can have a good "off" switch while relaxing with their people. We are a very hands-on family-oriented program. We put our all into each puppy to ensure a healthy, stable, confident, and friendly temperament. We use the puppy culture program as a baseline in our puppy-raising protocol to help build confidence and nurture their critical thinking skills. Emily has been a veterinary technician for 12 years, so all the dogs and puppies receive routine and quality vet care; she is also a certified canine trainer and behaviorist, so we spend a lot of time watching and analyzing each puppy's behavior. We temperament test each puppy at six weeks old to help provide each family with the most information possible before picking is done; this helps ensure each puppy ends up with the best possible fit in a family. We are very involved with all the families still, to this day, and make a point to always be a resource to them for anything from health to training and everything in between. We take a lot of pride in our program and have put in countless hours and literal blood, sweat, and tears developing and shaping the program and our puppy-raising protocol to be one of the best available to families in the southeastern United States, specifically South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina. However, we have also placed puppies in homes with families in many other states, including California, Alaska, New York, Connecticut, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota. After falling in love with the breed and seeing so many local German Shepherd breeders in South Carolina who were not educated on responsible breeding practices or even the standards, lines, and recommended health testing of the breed, producing unstable and low-quality German Shepherds and then watching families who didn't know better struggle to deal with these issues we decided to dedicate our time to being a resource for education on the breed and an option for families to have a quality shepherd that can excel in all areas that are healthy and mentally stable. Education is our favorite part of it all, next to the absolute joy of seeing the family's faces when they get to bring their new family members home. Home: Opening Hours. For the complete list please see our German Shepherd Breeders by State guide page. The cost of a German Shepherd puppy in South Carolina can vary widely. If you are looking for an extremely high-quality pup, expect to pay more than that. When assessing the price of your pup, do not forget to take vet fees into account. Be sure to talk with the breeder about any additional costs associated with caring for your dog after it is brought home. A reputable breeder should be able to provide you with all the information you need about taking care of your new best friend. First, ask your friends, family, and coworkers if they know of any good breeders in the area. Chances are, someone you know has purchased a dog from a breeder in the past and can recommend someone trustworthy. Second, do some online research. There are many websites devoted to helping dog owners find responsible breeders. Be sure to read reviews and compare prices before making a decision. Finally, contact your local German Shepherd rescue organization. These organizations often work with reputable breeders who have puppies available for adoption. This is a great way to find exactly the kind of pup you are looking for, while ensuring that your money goes to a good cause. If you do your research and contact breeders ahead of time, finding the perfect German Shepherd puppy for sale in South Carolina should be easy. First, be sure to ask lots of questions. A good breeder will be happy to answer all of your queries and will provide you with detailed information about their puppies. Second, take the time to meet the parents of your potential pup. If the parents are friendly and healthy, it is likely that their puppies will be as well. Finally, spend some time playing with the puppies. This is a great way to get a feel for their personality and temperament. Be sure to bring your entire family along so everyone can have a chance to interact with the puppies. If you follow these guidelines, finding a responsible German Shepherd breeder in South Carolina should be easy. Just take your time and contact several different breeders before making a final decision. A good breeder will have no problem giving you the contact information of happy customers. If possible, visit the homes of some of these customers to see the puppies firsthand. This will give you a good idea of what to expect from your new puppy. References will be able to tell you a lot about your potential breeder, so be sure to ask for them. If your breeder is reputable, they will have no problem with you contacting some of their previous buyers. Ask these customers about their experience with the breeder and their puppies. Were the puppies healthy and well-socialized? Was the breeder easy to work with? Did they provide any after-sale support? A good breeder will be happy to provide them. If they do, this is a promising sign. A reputable breeder will take their puppies to the veterinarian for regular checkups and preventative treatments. Make sure you confirm your suspicions before proceeding any further. Your breeder should take their German Shepherds to the vet regularly. A reputable breeder will be very open about allowing you to meet either or both parents. Reputable breeders will always offer written health guarantees so that both parties can be protected against illness or genetic defects. There are plenty of responsible breeders out there who will be more than happy to help you find the perfect puppy. You can also report them to the Better Business Bureau or your local animal control agency. Puppy Mills Puppy mills are a huge problem in the United States, and they often prey on unsuspecting buyers who are looking for a new pet. The breeder is secretive and unwilling to answer your questions. The puppies are much cheaper than average, indicating that the breeder is trying to make a quick buck. You deserve much better than that. A responsible breeder will be more than happy to answer all your questions. You should expect health guarantees from any responsible South Carolina German shepherd dog breeder. These guarantees will protect both you and the breeder in case your puppy ever falls ill or inherits an illness or condition. A responsible breeder will always put the welfare of their puppies first, and they will be more than happy to answer all your questions. The breeders who meet these high standards will ensure that both you and your new pup are happy with your decision. However, there are a few things you should do before your pup arrives to make life as easy as possible for both of you. Set up the Crate Ensure that the crate you choose is large enough for your German Shepherd puppy to stand up and turn around. Just be sure to clean it thoroughly afterward so that neither of you accidentally steps on anything harmful. Here are a few tips to get started: 1. Take your pup outside immediately after they eat, drink, or play. Reward your pup when they successfully pee or poop outside. A treat or some verbal praise will do the trick. Have patience. It may take a little while for your pup to get the hang of things, but they will eventually learn where is appropriate to relieve themselves. If all else fails, consider using puppy pads or training pads until your pup has learned where to go. Congratulations on your life with your new puppy! What Is A Merle Pug? The merle Pug is just as much Pug as any other specimen of this breed. Merle puppies are still Pugs with the same body and temperament characteristics as fawn or black Pugs. The issue with the merle coat is that it does not occur naturally with this dog breed. The merle coat is a result of gene manipulation either by accident or on purpose. Those patches are often blue or gray, and appear a bit washed-up. You may recognize them as blue merle Pugs. The base coat is not a solid color. Although merle is simply a stunning coat pattern, it brings along many potential problems, and a wide list of hereditary genetic conditions. Now, I want to discuss the origin of merle Pugs. When did they first appear? Do we know who the first merle pug was? Pugs are an ancient breed. These days, planned breeding is what breeders use in order to achieve the desired coat. Merle Pugs are all the rage. And, let me tell you something — this business is booming! About The Merle Color The merle color is a result of specific genes. Canine experts call those genes M genes. Remember when I told you that the merle coat pattern can occur naturally with some dog breeds, like Collies? So, how does the merle gene occur with the Pug dog breed? Are those Pugs really purebred dogs? The merle gene has to be introduced from another dog breed. Dogs that are carriers of the merle gene were probably used in the breeding process some time in the past, which has resulted in merle Pug puppies. This is a long process, and it does not guarantee success every time. Also, merle Pugs can be crossed with other Pugs to achieve a spotted coat. Transferring The Merle Gene Photo from: patternedpugz When it comes to the merle gene, we can tell apart two different merles: the big M and the little m. The entire merle coat depends on the combination of these merle genes. The m gene from the other parent does not have to be present. Also, two M genes are of a certain merle coat — sadly, a double merle. You can avoid the merle coat if your puppy inherits two sets of the m gene and no M genes at all. How Healthy Are Merle Pugs? Pugs are small dogs with thin legs, and yet, a sturdy body. The first thing that many dog owners notice about Pugs is their smushy face. This condition stands for Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome , and it affects the upper airways. But, this is something that all Pugs experience. Are there conditions specifically linked to merle Pugs only? One of the biggest potential health issues for merle Pugs is deafness. Hearing problems can affect one or both ears. They can vary in intensity from partial deafness to complete loss of hearing. Hand in hand with deafness comes blindness. The same rules apply to blindness: one or both eyes, and partial or complete blindness. These are conditions that your merle Pug can live with. Pugs are known for having many skin hot spots. Their coat is super short and sleek, wrinkly, and prone to infections. Because of the lack of melanin in the spotted areas, merle Pugs are highly prone to hypersensitivity to sunlight. Merle Pugs can easily get sunburns, which can, unfortunately, lead to skin cancer. Applying sunscreen on your merle Pug is not ridiculous. I encourage you to do so every time you go out in the sun, when the UV index is super high. When we talked about breeding merle Pugs to non-merle Pugs or standard Pugs earlier, we mentioned that those dogs may or may not turn merle. When breeding two Pugs that are merle, you increase the chance that the puppies will be merle, too. Breeding of two merles results in puppies that are known as double merles. Double merle Pugs are almost always ill. Rarely does any double merle puppy end up being happy and healthy. Double merles are born with severe vision impairment, some are even missing their eyes altogether! I would never recommend getting a double merle Pug puppy. How Rare Are Merle Pugs? Of all the Pug colors including apricot, black, silver, and fawn, the non-recognized color is the rarest. As I mentioned earlier, it takes a lot of effort, time, and dedication to get a merle dog. And, for what? For having a Pug that may or may not be severely ill? No, thank you! PupVine promotes health over physical appearance any time. Good luck finding a merle Pug whose owner is ready to breed him or her. Are Merle Pugs Expensive? Well, this is a surprise! Merle Pugs are usually more pricey than other Pug colors. I find it hard to believe why someone would price potentially ill puppies higher than perfectly sound dogs of standard colors. The only reason I can see such an approach is profit, and profit only. Adding the adjective exotic always plumps up the price of the puppy, and makes people want it more. In fact, such people are very proud of having merle Pugs because they believe all the other dog owners envy them. Being proud of the merle coat is a bit ridiculous. Every dog owner wants a healthy puppy to spend lots of happy years with. So, to sum up everything: please avoid the merle Pug and pick any other approved Pug color. From there we began showing dairy goats, angora goats, and pygmy goats in 4-H, FFA, and open shows from .When my son went off to college, we decided to sell off our dairy goat herd and focus on our Pug Breeding Program. Once we were able to focus on our Pug Breeding Program more we began to search for pugs of unique colors that we didn't already own. In I quit my job, and started breeding pugs full time. My new job title is a "Stay at Home Pug Mommy". Instead we retire them and they live out the remainder of their lives here at Tipping Point Farm, playing, eating, sleeping day after day, and spending time with our family. After all, Pugs are the ultimate companion and mans best friend. They will always be there for you no matter what, whether they are trying to cheer you up, steel your food, or give you kisses. With such a large demand for our pugs, I have now brought in my mom's dogs to be a part of my breeding program, so everyone is able to have their own Tipping Point Farm Pug. My Mom owns a farm thirty minutes away from me where she lives and raises her own pugs with help from me. On February 11th, , my first pug, "Cheese", the one who started it all passed away suddenly. The whole family was devastated after learning of her passing and spending so many years with such a great dog. I was heart broken, I lost my best friend. This one dog was the reason behind my whole pug breeding program. I loved this dog so much that I wanted to breed pugs so everyone could have "their own Cheese". After all, Pug love is like no other, you are their world and they become a family member. Even though Cheese is no longer here with us, I know that I am lucky enough to have got to spend so many years with her and have her daughters, grand daughters, and great grand daughters. When it comes to our pugs, Health is our 1 priority and then of course color! From day one, we are directly involved with our puppies, we help them come into the world and love them everyday till they go to there new family. Please feel free to call or email me anytime you have a question or are interested in a pug. Thank you for taking the time to read the Story behind our farm. We are looking forward to hearing from you and your family and to adding a new member to your family. I apologize for this and will be back to keeping up with my website for .As soon as we learned of the diagnosis, we made arrangements to meet with the surgeon. Unfortunately after the scans were taken, a spot was found on his liver which gave him a terminal diagnosis 2 months without chemo, 6 months with chemo. In March of he opted to start a chemo regiment every 3 weeks to hopefully extend his life expectancy. During the next few months him and I created a bucket list of things he wanted to do, which we were able to complete in between his visits to the hospital and chemo treatments. In August his cancer was reassessed to see if the chemo treatments had been working. The results were heartbreaking, the chemo hadn't worked and his body was full of cancer. Within a month of this heart breaking news my fathers health deteriorated, he was back and forth between hospice and the emergency room until he lost his battle to cancer on September 22, .My fathers loss has been extremely difficult, but I am now able to start focusing on my breeding program once again. As of right now we have big plans for .For more information about our plans, please contact me with any inquiries regarding current and future puppies or keep checking back for updates. We appreciate your patience and look forward to adding the newest fur-member to your family. Sociability The Earliest Records of the Merle Pug in History The Pug is an ancient breed of dog that most likely originates in China where it was bred as a companion pet for wealthy individuals. It is believed that they date back to B. This means that they have the ideal temperament for a companion dog, being generally happy, and always happiest when they are allowed to spend as much time as possible around their humans. They did not require a lot of exercise, were small and easy to keep, and they were generally amenable little dogs. This led to the Pug not only becoming popular with everyday people but also with some prominent figures. Formal Recognition of the Merle Pug Pugs are generally recognized by most kennel clubs, but the Merle Pug is not, because it cannot be a purebred Pug and there are some concerns over the health implications of breeding the merle gene into the dog. The Kennel Club accepts silver, apricot, fawn, or black colored pugs. They Have Been Life Savers Pugs have long been kept by members of royalty from around the world and, in at least one case, even saved members of the royal family. In , Spanish soldiers attempted to kill Prince William of Orange, the Dutch prince, but his Pug, Pompey, heard the assassins approaching and started barking. This alerted the Prince and his men to the presence of the soldiers and his life was saved. As a result, the Pug became the official breed of the House of Orange. They are the epitome of lap dogs. In reality, the breed originates from China, however, and is more closely related to the Pekingese than any Bulldog. Pugs generally make excellent pets. They are loving and loyal and enjoy spending as much time as possible with their owners. And, they are not only understanding of children but they enjoy the attention and especially enjoy spending time with kids that are old enough to be able to throw a ball or toy around for them. However, it is worth noting that Pugs are somewhat prone to certain health conditions , most of which are related to the brachycephalic face. Pugs may also suffer from weeping eyes. Conclusion Pugs are popular pets and are an ancient breed that originate from around B. Their prowess as companion dogs saw their popularity spread throughout Asia before the dog headed to Europe, where its popularity also spread. Today, the dog is still bred as a lap dog. While the Merle Pug is popular with some owners, it is not recognized as a Pug by kennel clubs because the merle coloring is not naturally occurring in the Pug breed, and it is believed that intentionally breeding it into Pugs can cause health problems. November 11, 1. Merle is a very interesting and exotic looking fur pattern present in some dogs breeds. It is a pattern in the fur rather than a fur color. This pattern expresses itself as random dark patches of fur over a lighter solid or piebald coat. Merle is not a naturally occurring color for pugs. The merle coloring is not a naturally occurring color and it needs to be bred in over generations to maintain the pug look but with different coloring. That trophy goes to brindle. Most pugs are usually either fawn or black. Merle Pugs are not purebred If you breed two purebred pugs together you will never be able to produce a merle puppy. So, for pugs to be merle they must have one or more ancestors who have been bred with another dog breed that does have the merle gene. Some people may think that merle pugs are purebred because they still look the same as other pugs but this is just due to the careful introduction of the merle gene and selective reproduction to maintain the pug look, but with the merle fur pattern. If you consider this is for a healthy, purebred fawn or black pug, then a merle pug should not cost more than this! However, there are some dishonest and tricky sellers out there who market merle pugs as exotic, rare and trendy to try and get a higher profit. Merle Pugs do not have additional health problems compared to regular pugs Merle pugs are just the same as regular pugs but with different color fur. This is a standard merle pug with the genes Mm. These pugs do not have any additional health problems however, the presence of the merle gene does increase the chances of pugs developing the health conditions usually associated with them. The pug breed alone has some significant health conditions that should be taken into consideration. These health concerns may include: Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome BOAS : This can cause severe breathing difficulties due to their flat faces Eye problems: including dry eye and corneal ulcers Hip Dysplasia Skin Infections Pug Dog Encephalitis: This condition can cause blindness and a host of other ailments and can eventually be fatal If you wanted to take a look at this in more detail check out the PDSA website. All of these health concerns are for any pug, including merle pugs. Double merle is what happens when you breed one merle dog with another merle dog. In any case, double merle dogs have a much greater chance of developing health conditions. It usually involves blindness and deafness due to a lack of pigment in the eyes and ears. Some extra splotches of dark fur on their back. Regular fawn or black pugs are expected to live between 12 and 15 years, however, the presence of the merle gene does increase the probability of pugs developing some serious health conditions and it can exacerbate some conditions that pugs already surfer from. However, a double merle pug would certainly pose some ethical problems due to all the health issues that they have. Breeding for color When you start breeding dogs for a specific color or a rare color, you start running into some issues. So, what is the verdict? Should you get a merle pug? Is it ethical? Are they rare and exotic? Ultimately, you should never purchase a dog just based on its aesthetic appeal anyway and you should always do your research to figure out if choosing a certain color means that animal will have a poorer quality of life. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. The Earliest Records of Merle Pugs in History Pugs were first bred and honed into perfect companion dogs around BC, making them one of the oldest breeds of dogs in the world. They were first bred in China, and the flat-face dogs were the chair warmers and close companions of Chinese royalty and the elite. Everyone in the upper circle of society, from Tibetan Monks in their temples to Emperors in their Palaces, the Pug was so revered that they had guards and servants of their own! Then, the breed was refined and resided with British celebrities and royalty. Finally, in the 19th century, the Pug made its way to America, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in .They were immediately popular when the breed first emerged in China, and their lovable faces made them a curiosity to the traders who shipped them to Europe. The Pug began to take off in England when the monarchy adopted the breed, with Queen Victoria owning several and passing them down the family line. In the US, the breed was slow to gain popularity. However, with the founding of the Pug Dog Club of America in , the Pug has slowly crept up the ranks. However, only the following colors were accepted by each club: Black Apricot Silver Merle is not a recognized color in any of the major kennel clubs because it does not occur naturally in the breed as it does for others like the Cardigan Corgi. The merle gene is semi-dominant, meaning only one must be inherited from a parent to produce a merle coloring. In addition, double Merle Pugs can also be born with eyes much smaller than normal called microphthalmia , which can leave the dogs blind. These health issues are why breeding merle dogs is a controversial topic, and kennel clubs will never register a double merle dog. Image Credit: Virginia Blount, Shutterstock 3. Pugs also often have trouble giving birth, so the number of puppies could be less than those of another breed. Instead, merle has to be bred in from a breed that can pass on the merle gene, and two purebred Pugs will not be able to produce a merle puppy. Merle Pugs can make loyal, loving, and carefree pets to the right owner, as long as the owner is aware of and able to deal with some of the potential illnesses they can have. Pugs have other well-documented health issues due to having flat faces, including breathing and eye problems. However, owners knowledgeable about what the breed needs regarding care and exercise can have a fun-loving and loyal companion in the Merle Pug. Image Credit: Virginia Blount, Shutterstock Conclusion The Merle Pug is an anomaly in the dog world since the breed does not usually carry the patterning. Merle is a genetically inherited trait that must be bred into Pug lines from other breeds that can pass the gene on naturally. If they are bred responsibly, merle dogs often live normal and happy lives without health issues. Regardless of the controversy surrounding them, Merle Pugs make excellent pets for responsible, caring owners.

Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Bullboxer Pit Highlights The Bullboxer Pit is a mixed breed dog. Bullboxer Pits may tend to overeat. Owners must be diligent about monitoring diet. Bullboxer Pits have often been used as farm or guard dogs, due mostly to their loyal nature and powerful strength. The most regularly seen coat colors are brown, tan, yellow, and black. Although their coats are easy to maintain, Bullboxer Pits do shed all year long. Brushing can help. Due to their exercise requirements, physical strength, and need for training, this breed might not be best for novice dog owners. Boxers came on the scene in Germany back in the s; the dogs were often used to transport supplies and ferry messages to troops during the first two World Wars. The American Pit Bull Terrier was first employed in blood sports and used in baiting bears and bulls. The first ever Bullboxer Pits can be traced back to a German dog breed called the Bullenbeisser, which is now extinct. Due to the care and attention Bullboxer Pits require from an owner, many of them can end up in shelters. Bullboxer Pit Size The Bullboxer Pit is often described as a medium-sized dog, although they are also stockier and sturdier than many other middle-sized canines. Most weigh in at 50 to 80 pounds and range in height from 16 to 20 inches. Female Bullboxer Pits can often be a little smaller than their male counterparts. Bullboxer Pit Personality Bullboxer Pits have often been used as farm or guard dogs, due mostly to their loyal nature and powerful strength. These dogs can be especially devoted to their families, and often become very protective of any children in the household. Very upbeat walks—or even jogs—are required, so the owner must also be able to maintain a healthy and regular exercise routine. Around two hours of exercise per day is required—adding agility training or even swimming to the daily sessions can help vary things up. Apartment dwellers may find that many buildings do not permit Bullboxer Pits to live with them. Some of the more common health problems Bullboxer Pits suffer from include: Obesity due to overeating. Brindle 2. She needs plenty of exercise and lots of play! Given that both the Boxer and the Pitbull were bred for use as working dogs, these breeds are very energetic, so your Boxer Pitbull Mix requires a lot of exercise. This is what a well-exercised Boxer Pitbull Mix should look like: The Boxer Pitbull Mix is very playful and will need lots of toys at home. Careful, though! With her strong jaw and love of chewing, this dogs can destroy a chew toy within minutes. When you take her out, take a ball or a Frisbee to play fetch. She will love it! You should take her out for a brisk one-hour walktwice a day. If you are running, twenty minutes to half an hour should be enough. If your dog tires you will notice her slowing or beginning to pant excessively you should stop for a five-minute break and hydrate her. I recommend taking out a collapsible doggie bowl in which you can give her water. A note on exercising your Pitbull Boxer Mix puppy This advice on exercise applies to the adult dog only, as when large-breed puppies do too much running and ball-chasing this can cause long-term injuries. With your Pitbull Boxer Mix puppy, it is best to do lots of short walks and indoor play until she matures, at about 1 year — 16 months. Watch this 11 week old Pitbull Boxer Mix. She is curious, playful, active, and absolutely, jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Whatever the weather — not with this dog! In rainy weather, she will need a doggie coat to keep her warm. During summer months, it is best to take her out in the early morning or the evening when the sun is less intense. She may still need sunscreen, but make sure you purchase one without zinc oxide, as it is toxic for dogs. The Pitbull is also a very affectionate dog when well-socialized, who will lick you all over if you give her an inch. She was in fact bred for both work and companionship , and due to her gentle nature, is beginning to be used more and more as a therapy dog. Both Boxer and Pitbull are also great with children , which makes them excellent family dogs. The Boxer is very patient and protective, while the Pitbull is solid, a people-pleaser and highly trainable. So mix them together and what have you got? A companionable, affectionate dog who fits in perfectly with a family, wants a lot of attention and gives in return. It is, of course, worth noting that as puppies they are going to be more hyper, and so their contact with children must be supervised. Also, your dog must be well-exercised to be around children, as if not she will be incredibly excitable and could knock over a small child. Her guard dog instinct is strong, which can be useful if there is an intruder or attacker. These are courageous dogs who used to risk their lives baiting bulls, so have no doubt that she will defend you and yours if necessary. If this instinct gets out of hand, however, it can become a problem. You must make sure that you socialize your Boxer Pitbull Mix from a young age with as many people as you can. Invite friends and neighbors to your home and provide her with a positive association by having the person give her a treat when they arrive. As long as you train her well and stay consistent, this dog will be the friendliest dog around. She might be too hands-on for older pets Providing they are both socialized properly, both breeds can get on well with other animals, particularly Boxers. As for play style, Pitbulls can be rough and Boxers like to use their front paws when playing much like a boxer… oh, that makes sense! People are also beginning to look past the negative stigma around Pitbulls and realize their high intelligence and trainability, too. Director of Operations at Universal K9 claims that out of the hundreds of dogs he has trained for police work, the Pitbull, Kiah, is one of the top three he has ever placed. These dogs can be stubborn, though, meaning that you need to be firm and consistent with them. As long as you are in charge, your Boxer Pitbull Mix should pick up basic commands quickly. Make sure you do enough repetition and provide rewards and lots of praise. As puppies, they are boisterous and energetic little characters. You will need to be assertive in order to get their focus. She is a moderate shedder Though these dogs have a short coat, they are moderate shedders and will require a good grooming session once a week. They will probably lose more fur in the Spring, from April through May, so it may be a good idea to brush her twice a week during these periods. She will also need her ears checked monthly, either at the vet or with a reputable groomer. She is usually healthy but has some potential health concerns The Pitbull Boxer Mix is generally a healthy breed, as both pure breeds are as long as she gets sufficient exercise, of course and as I mentioned in the intro it can live for up to 13 years. Having said that, it is always worth being informed on any potential health issues this breed can develop, so here are the main ones your dog could be prone to: Cancer While the majority of Boxers are healthy , they are at risk of an aggressive form of cancer called hemangiosarcoma , which occurs in the blood vessel cells. It can be difficult to detect, but signs can include weakness, a distended abdomen, difficulty breathing and weight loss. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, talk to your veterinarian as soon as possible, as this cancer can spread rapidly. Hip dysplasia This condition consists of a malformation of the hip joint, where it is unstable or loose in the socket. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals shows that this condition occurs in both breeds , although Pitbulls are more susceptible. Severe cases can lead to arthritic joints and lameness. Signs can include walking or running with an altered gait and reluctance to fully extend their rear legs or jump. Weight control helps enormously with this condition; keep her slim, as any excess weight will put stress on her joints. Heart disease The Boxer is prone to a heart problem called aortic stenosis , which in most cases of the disease the dog is born with. This disease causes narrowing of the aortic valve, which puts pressure on the heart. Symptoms can include rapid breathing or difficulty breathing, sudden loss of consciousness, and congestive heart failure. If your vet picks up a heart murmur, the diagnosis can be confirmed with an X-ray and a cardiac ultrasound. Allergies Pitbulls can have various allergies , so your Pitbull Boxer Mix may be susceptible. They can be treated with antihistamines, and in the case of skin irritation, you should use shampoos specifically designed for sensitive skin. Conclusion Are you a family with children without any older pets? Are you ready to dedicate your days to plenty of exercise and play with your new lively companion? Can you give her the consistent training she needs? If the answer is yes to all of the above, you are more than ready to own a Pitbull Boxer Mix, and she will be more than happy to have you. Have you got a Pitbull Boxer Mix and a story to share? Comment below! About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. Had her posted on the local shelter site but no takers. We have a year-old Chihuahua and 8-year-old Yorkie so keeping the new dog inside is not possible. For a temporary measure we put a cardboard box with lots of pillows and blankets warmed in the dryer on the porch swing. It has since warmed up into the range. She appears to be happy running around outside and sleeping on the porch swing near the now chewed up box. We have ordered a dog house for her and are having her spayed tomorrow. We are a late middle-aged couple but I hope to be able to walk with her at least once a day. I hope you can wish us well for rescuing her. This dog is what is known as a crossbreed, mixed breed, hybrid or designer dog. There is some controversy that comes along with owning a crossbreed dog like the Bullboxer Pit mix. Crossbreed dogs of old were once primarily created by breeders and experts who continued to breed and perfect these dogs until they were predictable enough to be considered purebreds. This is because newer generation crossbreeds are often less predictable than their purebred counterparts when it comes to health, temperament and appearance. However, there are some benefits to buying a crossbreed dog, especially when it comes to health. In fact, crossbreed dogs actually have a wider genepool than purebreds, which means they may be less likely to inherit specific health issues from one parent over the other. This is why experts recommend you consider both parent breeds and research aspects of their origin, appearance, temperament and health before deciding to invest in their crossbreed offspring. Originally bred for bull baiting and blood sports, the American Pitbull Terrier has played many roles throughout his existence. This loyal, energetic, and highly trainable canine makes a wonderful service dog and performs tasks for police, military, and even first responders. And, in spite of his bad rep, the American Pitbull Terrier has been found to do remarkably well with children. However, this is a high energy dog who requires consistent training, socialization, exercise and attention. For this reason, the Pitbull is best suited for experienced and responsible dog owners. This is a dog with a long history going back nearly 2, years, where his origins connect him to ancient war dogs. Like the Pitbull, the Boxer has played many roles throughout history, including working as a service dog, a military and police dog, a guide dog, a guard dog and a war dog in both World Wars. For this reason, it is likely that your Pitbull Boxer Mix will look more like one dog over the other. That said, both the American Pitbull Terrier and the Boxer have some similarities when it comes to appearance. These similarities include size, coat type, and coat color. This means your Pitbull Boxer Mix is likely going to weigh between 50 to 80 pounds, and he can come in a variety of colors including black, tan, white, fawn, brindle, blue, and blue cream. Pitbull Boxers are smooth coated dogs that shed moderately, so they may not be ideal for allergy sufferers. Their ears are naturally going to be floppy and they have long tails. With Boxers, it is common for some breeders to dock their tails and clip their ears. With Pitbulls, clipped ears are also quite common. However, this practice is becoming less and less popular and is even discouraged by many breed clubs, breeders and associations. Furthermore, since the Pitbull Boxer mix is a hybrid dog and therefore not eligible for show, there is really no reason at all to have his tail docked or ears clipped. This is great news for this sweet dog as this practice can be painful and lead to infections and other issues down the road. You already know that the Pitbull Boxer mix is going to be a larger dog, but did you know his personality is going to be just as big? This means that your Pitbull Boxer mix is going to require plenty of daily exercise each and every day in order to stay happy and healthy. Routine exercise for an average Pitbull Boxer mix will consist of at least two walks a day. Each walk should be around 40 minutes to an hour and should be conducted utilizing the proper walking equipment like a harness and leash. Since Pitbull Boxer mixes are stronger dogs with lots of energy, they can be prone to pulling on leash. Some owners turn to prong collars and choke chains to reduce pulling, though recent studies have found that this type of equipment may actually be dangerous for certain breeds. Instead, experts recommend using front clip harnesses or head harnesses to not only reduce pulling in your Bullboxer Pit but to also make walking more comfortable and safe. The Halti Head Collar. Pitoxer Description The Bullboxer Pit is not a purebred dog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in any of the breeds in the hybrid. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. He's 11 months old soon to be 1 and enjoys chew toys, meat sticks, long walks on the beach literally and generally giving everyone love. He was a bit shy at first, but once he got to know me he came around. He has a high dislike for other dogs from being attacked at a young age, but he is a good dog all around. He is a energetic little guy who is constantly pestering his mom to play with him. He loves his treats and is starting to learn basic commands very quickly. When the day is over and it's time to call it a night he's the first one to cuddle up with you and is off to dreaming most likely of chasing his mom around the yard within minutes. He has been a great addition to the family, and unlike his parents when they were his age he has been great at not chewing on things other than his chew toys. I've only lost one hat to his playfull chewing, which is considerably better than countless shoes, cords, hats etc that his parents had destroyed by the time they were 4 months old. I look forward to watching him grow up and turn into what I'm sure will be the most popular and handsome dog on the block. She is a great dog. She is very loving and has more Pit Bull characteristics than Boxer. She has the Boxer lips and lower jaw that sticks out a little further than the upper. He is very fast, hence his name. Rocket is a fast learner. He learned many tricks including high five, shake, sit and lie down at only 4 months old. Rocket loves to learn! He loves Meaty Bones. He is a loving dog like a Boxer but also strong and muscular like an American Pit Bull. I rescued Rocket from people who were feeding him raw meat and kicking him just when he was about a month old. He is the best dog I have ever had. His mother was a Pit Bull and his father a Boxer. He's very sweet and sleeps a lot. He's a climber! He's also very smart. He already knows sit, stay, lie down, come here, his name, go potty, as well as a variety of other words that indicate where to go crate, bedroom, outside. He is so gentle that he can attack a balloon playfully for 35 minutes before popping it.Everyone loves him and he's changing everyone's attitudes about Pit Bull type dogs or Pit Bull mixes. Pitbull Boxer Mix Exercise Requirements The general advice for most dogs would be to train them while they are young. But in the case of your Pitbull Boxer cross, you have to very cautious. Puppies of large-breed origin that exerts too much energy from running or playing can cause injuries that may last his lifetime. For puppies, activities may be limited to regular short walks or play until it has reached a certain maturity, around one year up to 16 months. As it gets old, the daily exercise requirement will also change. For an adult Pitbull boxer, minutes of exercise should be adequate to maintain good health. It is a very energetic hybrid so they will thrive in a lively environment. An ideal home would mean lots of space to move around, inside or in the backyard. Some states enforce restrictions with regards to Pitbull mixes like your pitbull boxer, so you have to keep it on a leash while out exercising. Using a leash will also prevent them from running into or jumping into everyone they encounter. They are most happy walking around in the city or the Dog Park or even trudging in the mountains. Another essential thing to consider is the weather. During the rainy season, your dog will need a raincoat to protect her from the rain and also to keep her warm. Sunscreen can be used but avoid products with zinc oxide, as it is a poisonous substance. The jacket provides full chest coverage, and the solid print is stylishly chic. The elastic leg straps and adjustable fastener guarantees a snug band comfortable fit. It also features reflectorized stitching so you can see your dog even at night. It is guaranteed durable — it features a galvanized cable and coated with crack-resistant vinyl. It should be able to withstand up to 7x the weight of your dog. My Dog Nose It! Pitbull Boxer Cross Training The combination of Pitbull and Boxer is explosively stubborn, so it is a suitable pet for someone with a firm and unyielding grip in training and socialization. And as always, your dog will react and respond best with positive reinforcement, rewards, and incentives. Punishment will never work, and more often than not, will only create or aggravate behavioral problems. It is essential to reward your pet to encourage positive behavior. Early socialization and training from puppyhood will form the foundation of a well-adjusted dog. Training your Pitbull Boxer should be a piece of cake because of their ability to pick up commands. To get their focus though, you would need to be tough and establish yourself as the master and make him obey you. We listed some training activities you can try out with your petpal: Behavior Training — How do you train him to stop barking mad? Constant practice will help you achieve the desired effect but never shout at him even if he continues to bark. Also, allow him to learn commands other than barking. Keep in mind that the goal is to reward your pup for being silent. Chores Training — Teach him to fetch your newspaper for you. Playing fetch with a toy or a ball should prep your dog for this activity. All you have to do is replace the toy with the newspaper and tech your Pitbull boxer how to get it, pick it up or bring it back to you. Fun Training — Rollover is one activity designed with your big Boxer Pitbull in mind. Start with getting your dog to lie down, and eventually how to roll over. Make sure you reward each action accordingly, and of course, practice makes perfect. Pitbull Boxer Combination And Families The Pitbull Boxer will become accustomed to any family dynamic most especially when trained well and socialized correctly. Their energetic and sometimes rowdy nature can knock off small bodies, so be extra careful if you have kids. There are specific training designed to help you manage this kind of behavior. Check with your local authorities with regards to the legal status of Pitbull mixes in your area. Find out if your Boxer pitbull mix is banned or restricted. Not only will they thrive in large spaces to allow lots of movement, but they will also want owners who will dedicate their time to train and socialize and to love and care for them. Unlike its parent breeds, the Boxer and the American Pit Bull Terrier, which have long-standing histories, the Boxer Pitbull Mix is relatively new to the canine world. This crossbreeding aimed to create a breed that encapsulates the best traits of both parent breeds. These dogs are incredibly affectionate with their families, forming strong bonds with both adults and children. They are also known for their athletic build and high energy levels, requiring plenty of exercise to keep them content and healthy. The American Pit Bull Terrier brings its strength, loyalty, and eagerness to the Boxer Pitbull Mix, contributing significantly to its personality. Boxers are also highly protective of their families, making them excellent watchdogs. Their muscular physique, unique square muzzle, and playful demeanor add a lot of charm to the Boxer Pitbull Mix. They are energetic, intelligent, and protective, making them excellent companions for active families. Their loyalty and affectionate nature also mean they form strong bonds with their families, making them a beloved pet in many households. This mix is a testament to the successful blending of the strength and tenacity of the American Pit Bull Terrier with the playfulness and protective nature of the Boxer. With a broad chest and a strong, powerful jaw, these dogs are a testament to the physical prowess of their parent breeds. Their eyes are typically round and full of life, reflecting their energetic and playful nature. The Pitbull Boxer Mix is a robust and muscular breed, ready to take on any physical challenge with enthusiasm. Size and Weight of the Bullboxer Pit The Bullboxer Pit is a medium to large-sized breed, typically weighing between 50 to 80 pounds and standing about 17 to 25 inches tall. This size makes them suitable for families with enough space to accommodate these active and energetic dogs. Overview of the Various Coat Colors The Boxer Pitbull Mix can sport a variety of coat colors, ranging from solid shades to mixed patterns. This diversity in coat colors results from the wide range of colors present in its parent breeds, the Boxer and the American Pit Bull Terrier. However, some dogs may also sport unique, beautiful coat patterns that mix these colors. This type of coat is easy to groom and maintain, making it ideal for potential owners who prefer low-maintenance breeds. Despite its short length, the coat is dense enough to protect the dog adequately against the elements. This pattern mixes dark and light stripes over the base coat color, creating a unique and beautiful effect. The brindle pattern results from a specific gene, and the intensity of the pattern can vary from dog to dog. This coat color can range from pure white to white with patches of other colors. Despite their striking appearance, potential owners should note that white Boxer Pitbull Mixes may be prone to certain skin conditions and deafness. This mix often results in a coat with a solid brown color with white markings or a white coat with brown patches. The unique blend of these two colors gives this variant a distinctive and appealing look. This coat color gives the breed a sleek and striking appearance. This unique coloration is due to a specific gene, making this variant rare and highly sought after. These dogs sport a coat that ranges from light brown to deep red. They also have a distinctive red nose, which gives them their name. This breed is a perfect blend of the playful, energetic nature of the Boxer and the intelligent, eager-to-please personality of the American Pit Bull Terrier. The result is a fun, engaging but also trainable, and loyal dog. These dogs are known for their playful and energetic nature, which they inherit from their Boxer parent. They are also incredibly intelligent and eager to please, traits they get from their American Pit Bull Terrier parent. This combination of traits results in a dog that is both fun-loving and trainable. Boxer Pitbull Mixes are also known for their protective nature. They are incredibly loyal to their families and will not hesitate to protect them if they sense any danger. Despite their protective instincts, they are generally friendly towards strangers, provided they have been properly socialized. One thing to note about the Boxer Pitbull Mix is their high energy levels. These dogs love to play and need plenty of exercise to keep them happy and healthy. They are always up for a game of fetch or a long walk, making them perfect companions for active individuals or families. They are known for their affectionate nature and love nothing more than spending time with their human companions. Their playful and energetic nature makes them great playmates for children. Boxer Pitbull Mixes are also known to get along well with other pets, especially if they have been socialized from a young age. They are generally friendly towards other dogs and can even live peacefully with cats. Training Your Pitbull Boxer Mix Training your Pitbull Boxer Mix can be a rewarding experience, as these dogs are known for their intelligence and eagerness to please. However, their high energy levels and strong will can sometimes pose a challenge, making it important to approach training with patience, consistency, and positivity. Introducing your dog to a variety of people, environments, and other animals at a young age can help them grow into well-rounded and confident adults. Socialization helps to prevent behavioral issues such as fear, aggression, or anxiety, and promotes positive interactions with others. This method involves rewarding desired behavior, which encourages the dog to repeat it. Rewards can include treats , praise, or playtime. This helps the dog understand what behavior is being rewarded. Common issues can include excessive barking , chewing , or digging. These behaviors can often be addressed through training and providing adequate mental and physical stimulation. If behavioral issues persist, seeking help from a professional dog trainer or behaviorist may be beneficial. Additionally, their intelligence makes Pitbull Boxer Mixes require mental stimulation to prevent boredom. This can be achieved through puzzle toys, agility training, or advanced obedience training. Ensuring that these dogs get enough exercise is crucial for their overall health and happiness. It also helps to prevent potential behavioral issues from a lack of physical activity. These dogs are energetic and athletic and need an outlet for their energy. Regular exercise helps to keep them fit and healthy and helps prevent issues such as obesity, which can lead to other health problems. Exercise can include activities such as walks, runs, playtime in the yard, or games of fetch. Structured Play and Exercise Sessions Structured play and exercise sessions can be a great way to provide both physical exercise for a Pitbull Boxer Mix. These sessions can include games of fetch, agility training, or even tasks that mimic the work these breeds were originally bred for. These activities provide exercise and strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Puppies and older dogs may not be able to handle as much physical activity as young adult dogs. Similarly, dogs with health issues may require modified exercise routines. Always consult your vet to determine the appropriate amount and type of exercise for your dog. Ensure your dog receives a diet appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. A diet that is high in quality protein can support their muscular physique and high energy levels. Always consult with your vet for specific dietary recommendations. Despite their short coat, these dogs still require regular grooming to keep their coat healthy and their skin in good condition. The grooming routine for a Pitbull Boxer Mix is relatively straightforward and manageable, even for first-time dog owners. Regular brushing, about once a week, can help to remove loose hairs and keep the coat looking its best. During shedding seasons, more frequent brushing may be necessary to manage shedding. Despite their short coat, these dogs can still shed quite a bit, so regular brushing can help to keep shedding under control. However, more frequent baths may be necessary if your dog gets dirty from outdoor activities. Use a dog-friendly shampoo to keep their skin and coat healthy. In addition to brushing, providing your dog with dental chews can help to keep their teeth clean and healthy. Nail Trimming and Ear Cleaning Nail trimming and ear cleaning are also important aspects of grooming. Nails should be trimmed regularly to prevent overgrowth, which can cause discomfort or issues with walking. Ears should be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent infections. If you need help with how to perform these grooming tasks, your vet or a professional groomer can provide guidance. Regular Check-ups Regular check-ups with your vet are an important part of grooming and overall care. Your vet can check for any skin issues, parasites, or other health issues that may require attention. Regular check-ups can help to catch any potential issues early, ensuring your Pitbull Boxer Mix stays healthy and happy. Being aware of these potential health issues can help you take proactive steps to ensure the health and longevity of your dog. These can include hip dysplasia , heart conditions, hypothyroidism , and certain skin conditions. While this may sound concerning, remember that not all Boxer Pitbull Mixes will get any or all of these conditions. Regular check-ups with your vet can help to identify and manage these conditions early. Your vet can perform routine screenings for common health issues and provide preventative care such as vaccinations and parasite prevention. Feeding your dog a diet appropriate for their age, size, and activity level can help prevent issues such as obesity, which can lead to other health problems. Your vet can provide specific dietary recommendations for your dog. Exercise and Mental Stimulation for Health Regular exercise and mental stimulation are important for the overall health of your Boxer Pitbull Mix. Regular physical activity can help to prevent obesity and associated health issues, while mental stimulation can help to keep your dog mentally sharp Genetic Testing and Health Screening Genetic testing and health screening can be beneficial for identifying potential health issues early. Discuss with your vet whether these tests would benefit your Boxer Pitbull Mix. Lifespan of a Pitbull Boxer Mix The lifespan of a dog can be influenced by a variety of factors, including its breed, genetics, diet, and overall care. The Boxer Dog Mix Pitbull typically enjoys a life filled with energy and vigor, and with proper care, these dogs can share many happy years with their families. This is an average range and individual dogs can live shorter or longer lives depending on various factors such as their overall health, genetics, and the care they receive. Genetics play a significant role, as certain health conditions can be inherited from the parent breeds. Diet and exercise are also crucial, as a balanced diet and regular physical activity can contribute to a healthy life. Promoting a Long and Healthy Life As a pet owner, there are several steps you can take to promote a long and healthy life for your Bullboxer Pit. Senior dogs may require a different diet, more frequent vet visits, and modifications to their exercise routine. These dogs are known for their loyalty, energy, and affectionate nature. However, potential adopters should be prepared for the responsibilities of owning this high-energy, intelligent breed. These dogs require regular exercise, mental stimulation, and consistent training. They also thrive in homes where they can participate in family activities. Consider your living situation, work schedule, and activity level before adopting. Animal shelters and breed-specific rescue groups are good places to start. These organizations often have mixed breed dogs like the Bullboxer Pit looking for their forever homes. You can also check with local animal control agencies or online adoption platforms. The Adoption Process The adoption process can vary depending on the organization. Generally, it involves filling out an application, meeting the dog, and going through an interview or home visit. Some organizations may also require references or a fee. This includes supplies like a collar, leash, food and water bowls, dog food, and a comfortable bed. You should also puppy-proof your home by removing any hazardous items and setting up a designated area for your new pet. Establish a routine for feeding, exercise, and training. Be patient and consistent with your new pet as they adjust to their new home. Remember, adopting a pet is a long-term commitment, but with love and care, your Bullboxer Pit can become a cherished member of your family. These can range from initial adoption or purchase costs to ongoing food, healthcare, grooming, and more expenses. Initial Costs The initial cost of a Bullboxer Pit can vary greatly depending on whether you choose to adopt or purchase from a breeder. Ongoing Costs Ongoing costs include food, regular veterinary care, grooming, and pet insurance if you choose to purchase it.

If you live in a condo or a small apartment, does your landlord allow dogs? Is there a fenced yard where they can play off-leash, or is there enough indoor space for your dog to roam around safely? If you live in a house with stairs or a balcony, or on a busy street with no gate, consider these danger zones. Think about how you can put up safety measures for your dog and make your home as pet-friendly as possible. Moreover, you must also prepare for your personal space to be invaded once you have a dog. No matter how much you clean your house or train your dog, there will always be a mess when there are dogs around. You feed and groom them. You potty-train them, clean after them, take them out for walks and playtime, and bring them to the vet for their check-ups. In short, dogs will take up a lot of your time and energy. You may have to sacrifice your me time or hobbies for cuddles, walks, training, and playtime with your dog. If you live with a roommate, a significant other, or family members, they must also be on board with your plans to be a fur parent. Its distinctive underbite creates its homely appeal. This breed also charms its owners with its affectionate and friendly demeanor. The life expectancy of a Shih Tzu is 10 to 18 years, so you can enjoy many happy years loving and taking care of it. They can be goofy, too. However, remember that these dogs are athletic and require regular exercise. Keep them active and physically preoccupied. Also, make sure that your home has an air-conditioning system. They have thick coats which resemble that of a lion. This pup is ideal for people living alone or with a small family. Training is needed, especially at a young age, to help them manage their territorial tendencies. Golden Retrievers are commonly described as friendly, intelligent, and confident. Aggression is rarely observed in them, and they have a very gentle disposition. Owing to their mild and friendly personality, Golden Retrievers make great emotional support dogs and guides for the blind. The American Kennel Club describes them as kind, active, and outgoing. Back then, these dogs were used for hunting, detection, and tracking. These days, they function as therapy dogs and guides for the disabled. While pleasant and friendly, these dogs bark a lot. They could use some training here. Usually bred for companionship, Bichons are playful yet gentle dogs that get along well with kids and other pets. This makes a Bichon Frise a lovely addition to a family with children. They love cuddles and lots of playtimes since they have an athletic disposition. You can say that Beagles are people pleasers because they love making friends with strangers. Yes, this breed is sociable and natural people pleasers. When you have one, expect that it will demand your undivided attention. However, Poms can be quite willful, dominant, and stubborn. You can curb such dispositions by giving your pet training early on. While it undergoes training, you may witness how intelligent your Pom can be, as it responds well to commands and cues. A Dachshund is your best bet! Dachshunds make excellent watchdogs and loyal companions at home. Well-trained dogs of this breed are also good with kids. The Dachshund is one of the cheapest dog breeds in the Philippines. Chihuahuas prove that. While affectionate, they tend to be very protective of their owners. They may bark at strangers or anyone who comes near their owners. However, their aggression can be dealt with through early training. Note: The prices above are just estimates. Many dogs in shelters and rescue facilities are waiting for their forever homes. Abandoned aspins and other pups also deserve the same kind of love and attention that purebreds receive. Dog Adoption Tips But before you proceed with the adoption, there are a couple of things to keep in mind: 1. Was it a stray dog, or did its previous owners surrender it? Was it abused? Check Its Health This should be easy, as reputable shelters and rescue organizations maintain updated records of their dogs. They also have veterinary partners to ensure the pups are in good shape. Before you leave the shelter, ask if the dog has received obedience training. The cheapest dog is the one you adopt from a friend or neighbor. However, if you adopt from a dog shelter or rescue organization, it may impose some fees for the adoption process. Good thing the fee already covers the following costs of owning a dog:[4] Updated vaccination Treatment for ticks and fleas Spaying or neutering What is the Cost of Owning a Dog in the Philippines? It takes a village to raise a dog. As mentioned, having one under your care is akin to raising a child. You feed them, get them their shots, and shower them with love and attention. To help you with your budget, take note of the following costs. You may be tempted to feed your pup human food such as leftovers. But remember that your food contains ingredients that may be harmful to animals. Your food and treat expenses will depend on your pet's size. For instance, if you have a small dog such as a Pomeranian, a 20kg sack may last up to two months, especially if you properly portion the servings. You can get cheap ropes and squeaky toys online. But do your due diligence first and check if the toy has choking hazards or components potentially dangerous to your pup. You may get your pup a cozy bed. Prices will depend on the size of your dog. Avoid losing your pup by getting it high-quality collars and leashes. The prices of dog hygiene supplies like tear stain wipes, towels, blankets, and pet spray also vary depending on the brand. Dogs also need vitamins and supplements to stay healthy and to keep their coats looking good. You can also buy a Dog GPS Tracker for peace of mind, especially if you have a dog who loves to roam around the neighborhood. If you have a Chow Chow, a poodle, or a Siberian Husky, expect to pay a higher grooming fee. So prepare to add a few hundred pesos for a home grooming session. Other than that, the veterinarian may also recommend some examinations, such as Parvo and heartworm tests. Blood tests, skin scraping, deworming, fecalysis, and a urinalysis may also be required. It can also help reduce undesirable behaviors, like aggressiveness or marking, usually brought on by their heat cycles. Also, the insurance premium is affordable. Some insurance coverage for dogs may also include cash assistance and burial assistance. The 5-in-vaccine protects dogs from canine distemper virus, two types of adenovirus, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. If you want to save money on this vaccine, check with your barangay or local government to see if it offers free pet vaccination services. The cost of medical emergencies varies depending on the procedures and medicines needed. You really have to think hard and assess your situation before adopting or purchasing a fur baby. All breeds have different needs from how often they need grooming, air conditioning, food sensitivity, health issues, and many more. It might be tempting to buy a Siberian Husky or a Chow Chow, especially when you can find them at a reasonable price, but always consider the reality of owning high maintenance breeds and if you can financial support them. Dog Maintenance Cost in the Philippines We went ahead and researched all the associated costs of owning a dog from their food, treats, grooming, and health needs. We looked at the upper and lower limit in terms of cost. Note that cost may vary depending on your breed size, health requirements, and your geographic location. You should also take your new puppy over to the vet. Although some may provide you with vaccination records and other documentation about your new dog's health, always take it with a grain of salt. It's best practice to have them checked yourself. Your veterinarian might recommend additional tests for Parvo, Distemper, and worms. Vets often check feces, urine, and bloodwork too. These are typically not covered by the check-up fee so best would be to consult your veterinarian for pricing. Remember, don't skip out on these recommendations. It's part of responsible dog ownership. Here's something we found on the PAWS. The Basics. Are they good family dogs? Labrador Dog Price — The Costs Involved Buying a Labrador is not just a question of the purchase price of a Lab puppy, though of course that is important. There are other costs involved, both financial, emotional and in terms of time and effort. So we need to look at those too. You may be wondering whether you will have the time for a dog, and if you have the space and energy for a large and lively breed? But this page will take you back to the fundamental considerations, to help you to make the right choice for you and your family. Do you have time for a dog? Can you afford a dog? What about your lifestyle? Will a dog fit in with your family? Is a Labrador the right dog for you? These questions all apply regardless of the type of Labrador you are looking for. The needs of a black Lab, yellow Lab or chocolate Lab are all the same in these respects. The same goes for an English or American Labrador too. Dogs need space, both indoors and outside. Even small breeds need room to stretch their legs and run about. And Labradors as fairly large and lively dogs need quite a lot of space. This means you need a decent sized backyard if you plan on buying a Labrador puppy. Somewhere that your Lab dog can run around, play and enjoy training sessions with you. Labradors can be quite silly during adolescence, bouncing and cavorting in the home. Their tails are long and thick, easily knocking any fragile decorations you might have from shelves. If you have lots of ornaments then you will need to move them to higher shelves to avoid them getting damaged. You will also need to move anything that could be easily damaged by chewing. With small puppies this will be very often indeed. Perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes during their first few days with you. If you live in a flat, or do not have a garden, this will be difficult for you. These are helpful but do take up a lot of space. Although this will take up a lot of space indoors, it can work very well for larger apartments with no easy outside access. Ideally however you do need to have a garden, and a part of the garden which your dog can use as a bathroom, along with a good system for clearing up after him hygienically. Space is key for a Lab dog! The right space for a Labrador includes large clear rooms in the house, with no breakable or fragile objects within his grasp. And ideally access to a garden where they can easily be let out to the bathroom and have room to play. Keeping a single Labrador permanently outside however is not usually a good idea, even with adequate shelter and security. Labs are very sociable dogs and prone to separation anxiety if they lack company. This means your dog may be both sad and noisy. It is always sad to hear from new puppy owners that are struggling to juggle the needs of a puppy with their need to work. These articles will help you to deal with this common issue. Even with a visit at lunch time. An older dog may cope with being left for up to four hours in row on a regular basis, but puppies need more attention than this. Contented Labradors are fairly quiet dogs and unlikely to disturb your neighbors. Nor are they very good guard dogs. However, lonely dogs bark and wreck things. If you work all day, can you afford to pay someone to come in and let him out to stretch his legs and empty himself? Or do you have a relative or friend that would be prepared to do this on a regular basis. Bear in mind that this is quite a lot to ask of anyone in the long term. The biggest long term time commitment in owning a dog is in the form of training and exercise. Training Takes Time All dogs need training in order that they can rub along in human society without being a complete nuisance. This means a regular daily commitment of ten to twenty minutes from you, in addition to your regular interaction with the dog. Training cannot be saved up for the weekend, your dog will have forgotten most of what he learnt the weekend before, and he does not have the attention span to concentrate on you for an hour and a half. You can find out more about training your Labrador puppy here. Staying Fit Exercise is required on a regular basis, for some breeds of dog this means at least an hour a day of walking or jogging to keep your dog fit and healthy. You can find out more about the exercise requirements of a Labrador puppy here. Whilst your dog will not come to any harm if you miss a day occasionally, a daily routine is often the best way to ensure that you build this important habit. Can You Afford A Dog? Dogs can be quite expensive to run. You need to consider not only how much a Labrador will cost you to buy, but also how much it will cost you to keep. How much do Labradors cost from breeders? The price of a Labrador puppy will vary from breeder to breeder, and from place to place. Perhaps you know a friend that has a litter of puppies and they are going to let you have one for free. However, the purchase price of a dog is almost irrelevant. It is such a small part of the final cost. The cost of keeping a Labrador The reality is, you are also going to need to fork out a chunk of your wages each week on keeping your pooch happy and healthy. Obviously you will have taken the cost of a good brand of Labrador puppy food into consideration. It is a good idea to budget for veterinary insurance too. Not because it is unreasonably priced, but simply because it is now so advanced. You can fix a lot of problems these days. We can do open heart surgery, mend complex fractures, treat cancer with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Pretty much anything you can treat in a human, you can now treat in a dog. And the catch? It costs. The more comprehensive your insurance package the more it will cost. Watch out for very cheap deals, as they may not provide continuing cover for long term ailments. You will also need to vaccinate your dog against common canine illness , and this will probably need to be done each year too. Especially if you are wanting to occasionally leave them in boarding kennels when you go away, as they require up to date vaccination certificates. Labrador Puppy Costs There will be a few other one-off costs such as a puppy crate and puppy play pen for your home for when your dog is young, another for your car if you have one. Then there are bowls, bedding, collar, leash etc. But you may be able to borrow a crate or get one second hand. Here are some of the items you will need for your new Labrador puppy, and reviews on the best options for Labradors:.

Both of us grew up surrounded by dogs, but our love affair with Labradors started with the adoption of two rescue Labs, "Tara" and "Little", while we were still in veterinary school. As a senior veterinary student, John did a theriogenology externship with Dr. Ruby was a field type Lab, very willing to please and with the lovely Labrador temperament. We did everything with Melissa, we showed in conformation and obedience. We did field tests, temperament tests, canine good citizenship tests and took her with us to visit schools and nursing homes. We soon realized that we were interested in being competitive in conformation as well as the other areas. We learned that first of all, we would have to have a good looking dog, then we could work on teaching that dog retrieving, obedience, etc. We contacted several good breeders and purchased several good show prospects. Unfortunately, we also learned a lot about the genetic problems present in our breed and these first few dogs were neutered and placed in loving pet homes. This was a difficult but vital lesson for us on our quest for competitive show dogs. All rights reserved.
