It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. He's 10years old and went a 6-hour hike with me into the Rocky Mountains during the summer. I can't say enough good things. With mutts, there's no telling. They'll be anywhere from Labrador to Maremma in looks, temperament, and everything else. Granted they are 4 months now but in keeping touch with all of the owners I have received nothing but praises. Dam and Sire both come from the excellent pedigrees which makes a difference. All 7 are extremely social and smart. All are extremely loving and show no signs of aggression. The reason we have chosen to be breed specific is there are not alot of people able to foster and accommodate the unique needs of a Maremma. Several of the cross dogs we have had would have been easily fostered in residential settings unlike the Maremma. We are only a very small group taking the dogs from across Victoria and several other states and most of us have at least 1, 2 or 3 cross Maremma in care at the moment which has left us with no room to take Maremma in need. We have some other Maremma needing to come into care but are unable to because of all the cross dogs which at times we find very difficult to rehome. One is: how long do you want to keep the coat, or what look are you going for? The "shaggy" look is most popular and they can be groomed just a couple times a year. If you keep your pet indoors most of the time you can get away with an occasional bath and brushing every few days. If you want the shorter look, which requires less brushing you will want to groom your pet every couple of months. The next thing to consider is coat type. A curly wool coat is not one you can keep "shaggy" but would tangle and mat if let grow long - they should be groomed every months, depending on care given. A fleece wavy coat will allow for the two different grooming options I spoke about and is the most desired Labradoodle coat. The other coat options we do not breed as they often produce shedders - that is why we breed multi-generation Australian Labradoodles, to produce the best coats and temperaments. Low maintenance but does shed at varying degrees. Not recommended for families with allergies. Fleece Coat Most Desirable. Curl varies. Typically non-shedding and good for people with allergies. Minimal to moderate grooming. Longer coats are kept, the higher the maintenance. Mostly non shedding and allergy friendly. More grooming, especially when coat is longer.
