This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! The Beabull: the good and the bad What is a Beabull dog? The Beabull is the cross between the English Bulldog and the Beagle , two of the most popular breeds today. The Bulldog and Beagle mix is becoming just as well-known among pet owners because of its even temperament. Beabulls are kid-friendly dogs , showing patience and affection even with the youngest children. Bulldog-Beagle hybrids are also playful and eager to please due to their Beagle parentage. Beagle and Bulldog mixes are companion dogs that are extremely devoted to their families. The crossbreed is adaptable to a wide variety of living situations; a Bulldog-Beagle will be as happy in an apartment as in a house with a backyard. Whether your family is highly active or laid-back, a Beagle and Bulldog cross will fit right in. What does a Beabull look like? Since neither the Bulldog nor the Beagle is particularly large, you can expect the Bulldog and Beagle mix to be a small dog as well. These pint-sized dogs are most likely bred from mini or teacup English Bulldogs or so-called Pocket Beagles, which nowadays are simply Beagles that are smaller than the standard. Common coat colors for this crossbreed include white, brown, merle, speckled, brindle, golden, and spotted. What is the energy level of a Beabull? The Bulldog Beagle mix usually enjoys lazing around all day and will experience occasional bursts of energy. Is training a Beabull difficult? Beagle-Bulldog hybrids enjoy mentally stimulating tasks and challenges, so these dogs are generally easy to train. The Bulldog Beagle mix responds best to positive reinforcement, especially when its favorite food is used as a reward. This way, you can prevent problems with aggression as your dog grows up. Unfortunately, these nibbles can turn out to be quite painful, especially since most Beabulls inherit the strong jaws of their Bulldog parents. One way to discourage biting in your Beabull is to stop playing with the puppy as soon as it uses its mouth on your skin. You can also give your dog chew toys, so it learns to bite only appropriate objects. Howling Despite their docile nature, Bulldog-Beagle mixes tend to howl, a trait they get from the Beagle. Your Bulldog Beagle cross will usually howl out of boredom or separation anxiety. You can keep your Beagle-Bulldog mix occupied by taking it for a walk or playing fetch. Like with most dogs, certain health issues may affect the lifespan of a Bulldog Beagle mix. Many Beabulls suffer from brachycephaly , a shortened facial structure that causes breathing issues and other health problems. This condition is common among Bulldog breeds and their crosses. The Frug , a French Bulldog and Pug mix, for instance, is a brachycephalic breed as well. Due to this condition, most Beagle-Bulldog hybrids must be closely supervised during exercise and kept indoors during hot weather. Aside from brachycephaly, Bulldog Beagle mixes may be prone to digestion problems, hip dysplasia, and intervertebral disk disease. These crossbreeds may also inherit a predisposition to hypothyroidism and eye problems due to their Beagle parentage. No matter how much your dog may beg, keep its diet restricted to 3 to 4 cups of dog food every day. If your Beagle and Bulldog crossbreed has an underbite, put his food in a shallow, wide bowl. This will make it easier for your dog to eat. Grooming Most Beabulls are heavy shedders, especially in the spring and fall. During these seasons, you may need to brush your Beagle-Bulldog mix as much as 3 to 4 times a week to get rid of dead hair and keep its coat shiny. You can save some effort in removing loose hair from your Bulldog-and-Beagle mix by running a vacuum cleaner over its coat. Due to its heavy shedding, the Bulldog Beagle Mix is not a hypoallergenic breed. If you feel like your Beagle and Bulldog crossbreed is getting too dirty between baths, you can wipe over its coat with a damp cloth. Where can I find Beabull puppies for sale? Breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds to elongate the muzzle of the English Bulldog, which often creates breathing problems. They continued to create Beabulls as demand for this mild mannered companion dog climbed. Even though the Beabull mixed breed got their start as a designer breed, some have still ended up in shelters or in rescue groups. If this dog is the one for you, consider adoption. Check your local shelters, rescue groups, and breed specific Beagle or English Bulldog rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breeds and find homes for them. Beabull Size As the Beabull is still a relatively new breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That being said, as a mix between Beagle and English Bulldog parents, you can expect Beabulls to be on the medium side. Most Beabulls weigh in at 30 to 60 pounds and range in height from twelve to 16 inches at the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger depending on which breed characteristics they acquire from both parents. Beabull Personality Many Beabull lovers describe this mixed breed as playful, social, and strong-willed. Like most Beagles, they tend to bark and howl rather frequently. Due to the strong-willed, stubborn personality of the Beabull, early training is key. They will often get mouthy while playing, and seeing as one parent is the English Bulldog, these playful nips and bites may be painful. Beabulls are very intelligent dogs and it is imperative to be patient and firm with training. They do best with positive reinforcement, especially treats, seeing as they are very food-driven pups. The Beabull is a very social dog and will be just as happy having one owner as they would be having an entire family to adore. They are very adaptable dogs and are extremely easy to please, making them a great pet. Beabull Health The Beabull is a fairly healthy mixed breed, but can be predisposed to the health issues faced by Beagles and English Bulldogs. Some of the more common health problems Beabulls suffer from include: Obesity. He is my first dog. He is a mix between an English Bulldog and Beagle. I raised him since he was first born. Very loving, smart and outgoing. He is very lazy, but loves to play outside when he is feeling hyper. I love his howl. He guards our home and is a member of our family. It is a cross between the Beagle and the Bulldog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. We got him when he was 8 weeks old. He loves to play tug-of-war and go for walks. He can be very lazy at times and other times loves to be outside playing with any kind of balls. He sploots a lot known as frog legging. I just love when he does that. He is loveable, happy, playful, the best cuddle buddy and is so smart. He loves to play ball, go for walks and socialize with humans and other dogs. My boyfriend and I have been raising him since he was 8 weeks old. He is always lazy in the morning and likes to stay up late! I love my pup so much! He is absolutely hilarious. He loves to go for walks , so much as have to spell it out w-a-l-k. He lies with his feet flat on the floor, typical of Bulldogs. He knows how to sit, stay, shake and roll over, and we have watched the Dog Whisperer together and now he has to wait to eat his food until we say "okay. Although very hyper like a Beagle, she can be lazy too like a Bulldog. She chews on anything and everything. But at the end of the day, exhausted from playing, she can be VERY loveable! I love this mix and am very happy with having her in the family! Duke is an excellent dog. He loves to run in the yard and cuddle in the house. He is very stubborn and was difficult to train because he had his own ideas of training. He is incredibly intelligent and will try to out-smart you with everything. If you hide his toy duck in the house and take him outside for hours, he will come in the house and find the duck right away. Duke has the body of a Bulldog, head of a Beagle, and the attitude of the Bulldog. He is very loving and wants to always be near you. He does best with having a daily walk and frequent trips outside. He currently weighs 54 lbs. He does not bark, but will sometimes give you the Beagle howl. He is very observant and will lie like a Bulldog while watching TV. Lola is a little over 1 year old now and weighs about 50 lbs. She's got a great temperament! Eager to please us, playful and loving. This is the best dog I've ever owned! Size Life Span The exceptional personalities of both the Beagle and the English Bulldog are merged in the Beabull; a superb family dog and low-maintenance companion for even the novice dog owner. The two breeds, which make up the Beabull, were extremely popular in Europe and the U. As loyal members of the family, they do not like to be alone for long periods of time. However, wet food needs to be put in the fridge once opened otherwise it will go bad. Some dog owners mix wet food and kibble to give their dogs the best of both worlds. When the puppy gets to a new home, they might go off the food for the first few days. They might eat a few kibbles and then leave it. Your puppy may also prefer to eat from your hand and not the bowl. However, call your vet if your puppy refuses to eat for more than four hours. Call immediately if your puppy looks unwell. There will be no problems if you are feeding a puppy with a homemade diet but it should be prepared from prescribed recipes that are nutritionally complete and balanced. Diets consisting of an unplanned and indiscriminate mixture of human foods particularly including carbohydrates will likely result in obesity and even dietary-induced disease. When you Lab reaches 14months of age, it should be given an adult food that contains less energy and calcium. This will decrease the risk of obesity and orthopaedic conditions. And do not feed them coffee or tea as they can contain caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline. These toxic substances can dangerously affect the heart and nervous system. Onions, garlic, raisins and grapes can be severely toxic in labradors. Raw meat is potential source of parasites and pathogenic bacteria for your puppy. Eggs yokes are an excellent source of protein. Raw eggs contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin a B vitamin. This can, in extreme cease, lead to skin and coat problems. Liver contains higher levels of protein, fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. Raw liver can be a source of parasites and pathogenic bacteria. Excessive amounts of liver can cause Vitamin A toxicity. Raw bone chewing will control tartar buildup on a pups teeth. However, bone chewing can cause intestinal blockages and perforations. Never use cooked bones. Commercial Puppy Foods Most commercial puppy foods are designated for small, medium, large and giant breeds. This designation can be found on the label. Puppies of medium sized breeds are less than '25 kg fully grown adult body weight'. A full grown and lean Labrador will usually weigh between 25kg and 45kg. We feed our dogs at the 'lower' level of the recommended range. The 'Hills Body Fat Index' is a very helpful body shape indicator. The same food as the bitch You should feed your new puppy with the same brand of food as the bitch received during lactation. From 2 weeks into pregnancy, our expectant mothers are fed 'Royal Canin Labrador Puppy' food. Introducing a new brand of food If you are wanting to introduce a new brand of food to your puppy, then blend it gradually with the existing brand in increasing amounts over 3 days. This should prevent food rejection and any kind of gastric upset. It is best to choose a diet designed for large breed puppies. Growing labradors Labrador pups have a very steep growth curve, and their total daily energy needs do increase as they grow. Calculate the amount of puppy food that will satisfy that need. And it does not correlate with optimal adult size. However, it does increase the risk of skeletal abnormalities. The vast majority of skeletal disorders occur in large breeds including labradors and they are associated with consumption of table food and an excessive intake of a commercial food and supplementation. The large breeds like labradors are limited in their ability to cope with an excess of minerals such as calcium. The result of this over consumption is abnormal bone development and skeletal disorders. Nutritional management will be critical in the to prevention of bone and joint diseases. In most cases, skeletal disease can prevented by appropriate quantities of feed in a regulated diet with optimal nutrient levels. A complete and balanced commercial diet is essential. Dietary deficiencies will be of little concern if your labrador pup is fed with a complete and balanced commercial diet. It is really only a very short time a couple of decades since almost all dogs were fed on canned meat. These are a lot less popular now. The effect that this shift away from wet food and onto dried food, has had if any on canine health remain the subject of intense speculation. Busy modern homes are pressed for time these days. So convenience is an important factor. Storage Not only is kibble convenient, it also stores well, even after opening. Provided that it is stored in an appropriate container and kept in a dry place. Most dogs nowadays are trained with food. But what comes out of a kibble-fed dog smells very unpleasant. These are additional bulking agents that are not fully digested and that pass through straight through the dog. These fillers mean that kibble fed dogs produce much greater quantities of poop and much smellier poop, than dogs fed on raw meat and bones. Plus, it can be tricky to find objective and unbiased discussions of the pros and cons of raw feeding on the internet. The pros and cons Raw feeding is quite a big topic. It is both complicated and simple. Complicated because we tend to worry about the nutrients our dogs are getting. Raw feeding is not as convenient as kibble feeding, It requires plenty of freezer and refrigeration space, a designated preparation surface, and good meat preparation hygiene. Just as with meat preparation for people. Small puppies are growing fast and are vulnerable to diets with a poor nutrient balance. It is very important you do your research before attempting to raw feed a small puppy. This is because raw fed dogs get messy. It is hard in this situation to keep raw meat juices containing pathogens, away from children too small to understand the importance of hand washing The important fact here is that there is no right way to feed a dog. Your family needs to be considered as a whole. The feeding method you choose needs to fit in to your lifestyle and current circumstances. I fed raw to my dogs for many years. But I did not do this and could not have done this, when my kids were little. Nowadays, I sometimes feed kibble, if circumstances demand it. But prefer to feed raw whenever I can. How often to feed puppies The amount of food that your Labrador puppy needs to eat each day must be divided into several portions. But it will almost certainly give him diarrhoea and could damage his stomach as kibble swells after drinking. From eight to twelve weeks your puppy will benefit from four meals a day. Breakfast, lunch, tea and supper. Space the meals at least three hours apart to give him chance to digest them properly. And make sure the last meal is a two to three hours before his last trip to the toilet at bedtime. Unless you are a very experienced dog owner and knowledgable about nutrition and the dietary needs of a growing animal, it is not a good idea to feed your puppy on household scraps. And complete puppy foods contain all the nutrients your pup needs to develop a healthy body. Dog feeding equipment and storage There is a huge choice of feeding bowls available. You can get some very cheap and colorful plastic bowls. I like stainless steel. But I admit it is quite noisy to handle and use. And not as pretty as some of the ceramic products. Think carefully before you buy raised bowls as some studies have associated these with bloat. Storing dog food Kibble is for the most part a convenient food source. To keep your food fresh, an airtight container is a better bet. We like the wheeled pet food storage bins and they enable you to move heavy quantities of food around without putting your back out! This slimline version fits nicely in a cupboard. Well worth thinking about, especially if you have several dogs to feed. There are also some gorgeous storage containers now that beg to be put out on display. Feeding Labrador puppies When you first bring your puppy home, your breeder should have provided you with a diet sheet, some food, and plenty of information on feeding Labrador puppies. It is really important to stick with his familiar food for the first few days. Moving home is traumatic enough for an eight week old pup without giving his tummy a shock too.
