Sleeping Issues in Dogs Like humans, dogs can also suffer from sleep problems and anything like this needs to be investigated further. Pain — It could be that your dog is feeling uncomfortable or in pain which is causing them to feel agitated. Anxiety in dogs can be worse at night and overnight, and sometimes they may not sleep much at all. This can lead to more daytime napping when they feel more relaxed again. Narcolepsy — This is a rare condition in dogs but it can happen. Dogs who suffer from this find their REM cycle disturbed and it can cause momentary muscle weakness and paralysis when awake. REM Behavior Disorder — This condition can cause dogs to move around while asleep, they can even walk into furniture or walls. However, the good news is that there are some practical steps you can take to create a good sleeping environment for your Labradoodle. Make sure your dog has its own safe, comfortable sleeping place that is there consistently. You may notice when you first bring your dog home where they are most comfortable and if practical, this may be a good place to put their bed. A crate with a blanket, bed, and a few toys can make a dog feel safe and secure and they will come to see this as their own sleeping space. Be sure your dog is getting the exercise they need. An under-exercised dog can become depressed and may therefore sleep for much of the day. A well-exercised dog means a happy and healthy dog who will have a great balance between rest and activity. On top of exercise ensure your dog is being fed good quality food and they are having the required amount for their weight. Creating a calm atmosphere at home can help your dog feel relaxed too, especially if they are nervous or anxious. Simply having the radio on low can help a dog feel more at ease and keeping noise levels down when possible. Every dog has a different environment, personality, and sleeping preferences. If other symptoms are accompanying the sleeping issues, then it may be something to explore further. We have learned that dogs have much fewer periods of deep sleep than we do so although they nap a lot, most of this is very light.

Fear imprinting exercises are brief and never designed to do more than give puppies a gentle apprehension or surprise to changes in their surroundings, such as having tarp over their play pen, hearing noisy crinkly bags, and being startled by shiny surfaces. Every exercise is immediately followed by a recovery period and always in line with the puppy's comfort levels to prevent emotional distress. Any Goldendoodle puppies that show an intense disposition to fear are worked with individually and at their own speed until their fear imprinting is safely achieved. Six Weeks By six weeks old, puppies are beginning to overcome their fear response — which is turning into curiosity! This is a great time for puppies to meet some new faces friendly people and animals only! Health Testing We perform regular breed-specific health checkups on our pups as well as their parent dogs through AKC parent clubs to monitor for any susceptible health risks, complications or diseases and ensure a long and healthy life. Potty Training The puppy potty training process should not begin until after 12 weeks of age, but puppies can still benefit from some attentive and professional care surrounding potty time well before training. Puppies typically show signs of an incoming potty break and can begin to associate potty time with being outdoors early in life thanks to the attention and quick action of professional breeders. Puppy Evaluation We love to see how our pups are coming along around the 7-week mark with a puppy temperament test which verifies that our best intentions are working. Puppy evaluations are always performed in between milestones such as before fear imprinting for a clear representation of the puppy's temperament and best results. This test typically involves the puppy being placed in the company of a stranger in an unfamiliar setting to gauge their reaction for fear, aggression or shyness. Around 7 weeks, a well-nurtured and socialized puppy should react to a new person and surrounding in a happy and comfortable manner. Eight to Ten Weeks Old By 8 to 10 weeks, puppies may experience a renewed sense of fear which may be strong, brief or unnoticeable. We keep close observation of our puppies during this time and take notice of and remove any fear triggers while keeping them in a safe and friendly environment to reduce fear. By 10 weeks, the renewed fear imprint should subside and puppies can resume supervised socialization. Puppies at this age are busy preparing for placement in their new forever homes. Our puppies are normally ready for their new family between 10 and 12 weeks of age, by which time they've produced an immune response to their vaccines and have been nurtured and socialized through their most sensitive developmental period. It's important to note that between weeks, puppies are still in their critical socialization period and that their new family members should focus on creating happy and healthy social experiences for their pups. This includes puppy recall training, puppy crate training and puppy advanced auto-sit training. Puppy Leash Walking We can't make any promises at 8 to 12 weeks old, but your puppy will have at least have worn a leash by that age! All our Goldendoodle pups go through some short, fun and basic leash walking attempts in the comforts of our family-raised puppy residence. From time to time, we even have those natural talents who take right to the leash and are easily manageable. We'll be sure to let you know if that's your pup! Running with the Big Dogs Under close supervision and in a safe environment, puppies can benefit from playful interaction with friendly and well-mannered adult dogs. I blogged about my bout with the puppy blues. I shared on YouTube and Instagram how hard it was to have a puppy in the house. And wow do I have loads to share about the experience of being a Goldendoodle owner. First things first. People choose to adopt or shop for a whole host of different reasons — many of which are highly personal. We had been wanting to add a dog to the family for years, but landed on a Goldendoodle puppy intentionally and thoughtfully. This decision was taken seriously and we contemplated a lot of options. Ultimately we wanted the experience of raising a puppy. Point being — I made the choice I made and I stand by it. We adopted our cat from a shelter and have mad respect for that experience. For us, sourcing a puppy from a reputable breeder was the right choice at the time and honestly, given the competition at shelters, the only real choice. But I digress. Who this post is for. I was in the market for a Goldendoodle puppy and was after all the info on the breed I could get. What exactly is a Goldendoodle? Goldendoodles are produced when a Golden Retriever is mixed with a Poodle. There are many different types and generations of Goldendoodles. You can also find Medium and Mini Goldendoodle options — all of which are determined by the size of the Poodle. The parent breeds of the puppy ultimately determine the generation of the puppy — and different generations are known for different traits such as coat type, temperament, body size and shape, etc. Goldendoodle generations. Like I said, Goldendoodle dogs come in a whole host of generations. This breeding variety can offer a lot of trait blends you might find in a Poodle Golden Retriever mix, from coat type to body shape and more. This is the first generation of Goldendoodle. Our dog, Lemon, is an F2 Goldendoodle. The brutal truth about owning a Goldendoodle. People will likely get upset that you chose to shop and not adopt. Yep — please refer to the above. Ironically — neither does team purebred! Folks who run in the purebred dog circuit sometimes have strong opinions about the lineage and breeding standards of a dog. Honestly, I do understand where the criticism about the Goldendoodle breed comes from. The result? A lot of really nasty, unsavory backyard breeding tactics. Many Goldendoodle breeders are unscrupulous and hard to verify. Unlike an AKC recognized breed where you can search for reputable and verified breeders, no such official list exists for Goldendoodles.
