Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Through our hard won experience we are able to consistently breed Golden Irishes to our own very high standards. Origins of the Malshipoo The Maltese Shih Tzu Poodle hybrid, otherwise known as a Malshipoo, is a combination of three of the most loved dog breeds. This hybrid breed, which originated in the United States of America, is relatively new to the scene but has quickly become a very popular designer dog. This is a multi-generational breed meaning there are a few ways that this particular hybrid can be bred. It is also possible to have a puppy from a Malshipoo and any other parent breeds. These dogs are a small breed that can be quite different from each other in appearance depending on the combination of breeds that their parents are. Some pups may inherit the Poodle coat, some the Maltese and others the Shih Tzu coat. Most puppies, though, tend to fall somewhere in the middle of the Maltese Shih Tzu spectrum. With three different breeds in the mix, there is almost no limit to the colors of the coat of your Shih Poo Maltese mix. There is a wide range of shades thanks to the Poodle and Shih Tzu genes. In general, you can expect your pup to grow up to be around 10 inches on average and weigh around 10 pounds. The only certainty with their appearance is that a full-grown Maltese Shih Tzu Poodle will fall into the toy breed category of dogs. Curious about Shih Tzu mixes? It is a good idea, though, to visit the puppy beforehand to see how your allergies react to the puppy. However, you stand the risk of falling in love and taking one home anyway. But, because they are so small, they are prone to obesity, so make sure to not overfeed your little friend. In general, high-quality dog food that is specific to small breeds is a good idea. If possible, a food that has supplements of glucosamine and chondroitin is ideal to aid joint support, as these doggos are susceptible to hip dysplasia. A first-generation Malshipoo will be a highly focused and intelligent dog. However, unlike the Shih Tzu, this pup is a star when it comes to training. This little dog is quite perceptive, and they are eager to learn and comply with your commands. As with most breeds, socializing your pup early is recommended with children and other pets. Personality is Everything with Malshipoos Malshipoos are an immensely intelligent breed that is loyal and playful with their family. Even though they are pretty independent, they love to please and be around their owner with their friendly and playful nature. They are complex in that although they are independent, they love to both give and receive affection and are incredibly loving. So, if you are looking for a dog that will be by your side or curled up on your lap and keeps you company, then the Maltese Shih Tzu cross Poodle is the dog for you. The Malshipoo has Some Health Concerns As with all dog breeds, there are a few health concerns to keep an eye out for regarding your Malshipoo. Some minor conditions include; patellar luxation, hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia. More severe conditions that can make themselves known include; bloat, hip dysplasia and epilepsy. Generally, minor conditions are easily treatable and manageable, with the more serious ones requiring more intensive treatments. They are adaptable to most situations as long as their owner is with them. They are, however, not suited to large homes or farms because of their small size. If introduced to it from a young age, they will happily travel with you almost anywhere. Although adaptable, they are still house pets and will need your protection when you take them away from the safety of your apartment. The Shih Poo Maltese Mix Is Easy to Groom As we mentioned previously, your pup could have a range of different types of coats depending on which parent breed they take after. Their coats should be shaved at least three times a year, and you will need to use a quality brush a few times a week to keep their coat tangle and debris free. Make sure to clean their tear stains on a regular basis, as they are prone to these because of their Shih Tzu and Maltese parents. These are the most common grooming considerations, just like one of their parent breeds, the Shih Tzu. Apart from those, the standard basics of keeping their nails trimmed and getting their ears cleaned are what is needed from time to time. Male vs Female Malshipoos There is very little to no difference physically between the male and female Shih Tzu Poodle Maltese mix puppies. However, when it comes to their temperament, there are a few notable differences. Female pups do tend to be more intelligent with a more independent nature. Female Malshipoos are also more protective in general and are less affectionate when compared to males. The male pups are far more playful and will actively seek more attention from their owners and give it more freely. You will be surprised to find that they are not stubborn and are very dependent on their owners, unlike the females. From barking to yapping and even whining, they do it all and rather loudly. Malshipoos and other dogs whine a lot to voice both their pleasure and displeasure, so keeping track of what they like and hate will be tough. E, K, A, B, and D loci have up to four variations each. The E locus, for example, has E, Em, Eg, and e genes. The E gene codes for black coat color. But the presence of other genes may make those pigments turn out brown, blue, or isabella. The e gene codes for red coat color. But other genes dictate where the red color will appear. A puppy can inherit two e genes for red colors in its coat that are never seen because B and D genes lighten the pigment to make it invisible. These genes also determine eye, nose, and paw color. Shih Tzu So, what kind of coat do you get when you mix the genetics of a Maltese with the genetics of a Shih Tzu with the genetics of a Poodle? Poodles carry a gene called KRT.If any dog gets two copies of this gene from its parents, it will have curly hair. Dogs with just one copy have wavy hair, and dogs without copies of this gene have straight hair. Toy Poodle How genetics work for a Malshipoo depends on which breeds were the parents and which were the grandparents. Cross a Malshi with a Poodle, and all the resulting Malshipoo puppies will have at least wavy and possibly curly hair. Cross a Maltipoo with a Shih Tzu; some puppies may have long, straight hair. Here are the possible combinations: Black Malshipoos have the black hair color of their Poodle parent or grandparent with the long hair of their Maltese parent or grandparent. Some Malshipoos will have black hair as puppies that turns brown as they grow up. But they will have black paws and noses. Blue Malshipoos are often born black but fade to blue as they mature. Black Malshipoos can also fade to gray. Chocolate Malshipoos have a coat the same color as a Hershey Bar. But they can fade to tan as they become adults. Red Malshipoos are very hard to breed. It is easier for breeders to get apricot coats. All-white Malshipoos require all-white parents and grandparents. Not just the Poodle parent or grandparent will need to be all-white. Most breeders look for Poodles with an all-white pedigree going back five generations to be sure of getting all-white Malshipoo puppies. You will occasionally encounter Malshipoos with bronze, cream, or liver colors. There are also Malshipoos with parti coats, 50 percent black with the rest blue or sable. All Malshipoos need regular grooming to prevent tangles and matting. Most owners will take them to a professional groomer monthly. Malshipoos are lap dogs. They love to curl up with their owners. They are designed to be loving companions. Malshipoos are intelligent dogs. They are easy to train. They adapt to new living conditions quickly. Malshipoos are great apartment dogs. They fit in small spaces. In fact, you need to be extra careful when you take your Malshipoo outdoors for exercise, protecting it from larger dogs and road hazards. The price of constant companionship from your Malshipoo is, well, constant companionship. Malshipoos do not like to be left alone. They can experience separation anxiety if not supplied with toys or a companion pet.
