He was intelligent, affectionate, but aggressive. On walks, he became over excited and uncontrollable when he saw another dog. He pulled on the leash and charged other dogs, jumped and barked. When visitors came to my home, he charged them, barked uncontrollably, and tried to bite them to make them go away. He actually bit Garrett in the leg! He was overprotective of the house and yard. He stood watch at the window waiting for something to approach so could bark and make a fuss. He used to jump up and hit the bird cage to make noise and watch the birds flutter. After working with Garrett, I feel Mikey has improved and will improve even more with time. On walks, I now have more control. I am able to redirect him to focus on me by backing him up, and changing direction in which we walk. I use my crutch to redirect him. I am more aware of potential problems and take action to avoid them. I can remain calm and have more control of him. He still needs work in this area but I know what to do. In the past I was told to feed him to keep his attention but this was only reinforcing his troublesome behavior. When visitors now come to my home, Mikey is told to go to his place, sit, and down. He is learning not to charge the door. He has started behaving successfully with visitors. I have completed exercises with him by rigging the doorbell and having friends enter. The exercises have been working. I can catch him more quickly and keep his excitement from escalating. He is less aggressive to the birds and is learning not to get over excited and bang on their cage. Garrett has emphasized the need to remain calm, use hand signals and speak softly and this is working. I now see that Mikey is affected by my mental state. Thank you Garrett. She has always been a great and loving dog but is stubborn, domineering and has separation anxiety. After my ex and I split a couple of years ago, Izzy stayed with him for nine months. During that time, she went through a lot of change and, when I got her back, her anxiety was worse than it had ever been. She was constantly on-guard and aggressive with and domineering of other dogs. If we even saw a dog while walking, Izzy would pull and lunge, jump on and nearly knock me over. We are his third owner and we found out soon after becoming his owner why Charlie has perhaps had a difficult time fitting into other homes. Charlie was incredibly aggressive with other animals despite his behavior around people. He unpredictably attacks other dogs and mauls them terribly to the point where we have actually considered putting him to sleep due to liability and trauma he has put on our neighbors and any dog that passes our home and Charlie has gotten out and been unfortunate to reach. We arranged our very first meeting with Garrett and within 15 minutes he was able to come into our home and demonstrate to us that he was able to show our pet Charlie who is dominant this initial meeting with Garrett and also allow us to have hope that we would not have to put him down and there would be some way we could train him. We were able to change the dominance and aggressive pattern by working with Charlie and using the psychological-type training methods that Garrett presented to us. He is not the typical type of trainer that involves reward, praise, food, but explains how an animal thinks and how an animal need to be rid of behaviors such as aggressive behavior. After a few one-on-one private training sessions our dog is actually controllable! We've done at least 5 training courses with other trainers with no results! He teaches you how to use your dog's strengths, training both traditionally and with dog whispering. His traditional methods are far superior to other drones though!! I love my dog and wouldn't put her in anyone else's hands. I have a Thai Ridgeback that was a rescue from Thailand. He was in very poor condition when I got him and because of that, I fostered many of his bad behaviors because I felt bad for him. I was at my wits end because "Mako" had a lot of aggression which I learned was based in fear. Garrett came over and immediately diagnosed Mako's fear. He also has those nasty stains in his face wrinkles. He has some skin issues and his ears are infected, but we know Dr. Larsen will help get all those fixed. When we got to the clinic today, I let out a little whimper when they were examining me and poor Washington thought they were hurting me. He tried to run to protect me, but a man held him back. We heard it has happened before, so we feel certain it will happen for us too. How would you like to have us in your family? Belle passed suddenly yesterday following complications during surgery. He had a very restless night and had to be sedated. This morning, he started out a little slow and grumpy, but got better throughout the day. Staff spent a lot of extra time with him and let him play outside. I spent about 30 minutes with him this afternoon. He moved around the yard, but he kept looking around. I think I know why. He and Belle always went outside together! He will get lots of extra love and attention. He is ready to leave the vet clinic and move into his foster home. He has been at our house for almost two weeks. He is incredibly docile and calm. He is house trained and well behaved. He gets along well with our children and walks well on the leash. He does, however, have some significant separation anxiety. He is a delightful pup, but he does not like to be in a crate or left alone. With the help of Heather, Dr. Larsen and Janell, we have made some changes to try and help this poor guy out. He also has some meds to help calm him down so his anxiety is not so bad while we are away. We are slowly seeing some improvements. He enjoys sleeping on his big comfy bed in front of the warm fireplace! How can anyone not love that sweet face?!? I do have some anxiety issues that my foster parents are helping me through. I did great on Christmas morning with all the chaos, as you can see in the picture of me sleeping in the wrapping paper. My humans had family members over to visit and I mostly behaved myself. For this reason it is best to place the crate in a area near where family members spend a lot of time. Wire Crates are lighter to transport and ventilate much easier while the Plastic Kennels are usually sturdier, safer and more comforting to your dog. Some owners get one of each for their GSD puppy and for different uses. Usually dogs will not eliminate in their bedding area. It is best to keep the crate area where the GSD puppy actually sleeps large enough for the GSD puppy to move about and to turn around in, but not so large that it can sleep in one area and "relieve itself" in another part of the crate. You can easily buy dividers to help separate the crate area into smaller areas while your German Shepherd puppy is growing so that you can purchase one crate large enough to accommodate your puppy once it is an adult. Never crate a German Shepherd puppy for more than 2 or 3 hours except at night when it is sleeping. Your new GSD puppy needs lots of opportunities to exercise it's body and mind and overuse of the crate can easily lead to terrible behavior problems for bored or lonely German Shepherd puppies and dogs. If you get a wooden gate, watch your GSD puppy carefully to make sure that it doesn't chew it. Remember, with time the German Shepherd will grow large enough to easily jump over a regular baby gate once it is an adult. This is exactly where all that early training comes in. Collars as puppy supplies can easily be lifesavers! In an emergency you can easily grasp the collar and restrain him as necessary. The most important thing about the collar however is that it carries that very important ID tag, another important puppy supply. In case the dog is lost or stolen, many times this is the first thing someone who finds a stray dog will look for. It is also what helps many dogs get returned to their correct owner. Make sure that the information on the puppy ID tag is current and up to date. There are many different types of collars on the market. Buckle types are one choice, however, I prefer the quick release collars with the plastic clips. There have been a few instances where my GSD's have gotten caught up together while playing and these types of collars have been truly lifesaving. One press of the clip and the puppy collar is off. That would not have been the case if the dogs had been wearing buckle type or some other style of dog collar. I do not suggest ever leaving a choke collar on a dog or puppy full time. Neck injury or worse could easily happen if the German Shepherd were to get caught up in something. If put on incorrectly, and many people do, strangulation could easily occur to your GSD puppy. Here is an example of the quick release collars with the plastic clips that I mentioned earlier that are excellent dog collar choices. GSD Puppy Bedding Fabric bedding that keeps it's shape and is easy to vaccum is a great choice of bedding puppy supplies. Bedding that has a liner that can be taken off is another great plus so that you can wash it whenever necessary and put it back on later. Puppy Doggie Door Supplies If you have the great fortune of having a securely fenced yard for your German Shepherd puppy, then a doggy door is an invaluable puppy supply and aid in the puppy house training process. They can be purchased in several sizes large should be fine for the adult GSD and most can also be locked when you do not want your GSD puppy to go outside. German Shepherd Pooper Scooper puppy supplies Several varieties are available of this particular puppy supply and they are indeed a back saver and a nose saver as well when you are picking up after your GSD. However, if you can't get one, plain old plastic grocery bags work just as well and are basically free. Large kitty litter scoops are good choices of puppy supplies also for this particular purpose when you're in a pinch. GSD Puppy Head Halters These "easy lead" halters are an alternative to conventional puppy collars - the thinking behind them being that if you control and lead the head, that the body will follow. Different types of brushes used on a GSD may include any or all of the following - pet shedding blade especially helpful while shedding , a slicker brush and a Rubber Curry Brush. Do not choose anything with small removable parts - and once the toys begin tearing apart go ahead and throw them away. Do not choose balls that are small enough to be swallowed by your puppy - it is best to choose balls bigger than your puppy can easily handle to cut down on this problem. Good choices for German shepherd dog toys are Nylabones , rubber bones , squeaky toys, hard rubber toys like Kongs , balls and plush faux wool toys. Given the suggestions for best puppy toy choices, keep in mind your dogs chewing habits. Aggressive chewers need one kind of toy but destructive chewers need something different all together and each of these dogs would require a different kind of toy. Stick type dog chews are not the best idea since they may become lodged in the German Shepherd's puppies throat. Overall, don't buy too many dog toys. It's a good idea to rotate the puppies toy selection to keep the puppy from getting bored, and from tearing them up quite so quickly. Also, this will help you to see what kind of toys your German Shepherd puppy prefers. When you do finally grab hold of the end of the dog leash, follow where the German Shepherd puppy goes while holding the end of the leash. After a bit you can take the lead and have the puppy follow you. Call the GSD puppy to you and reward him generously when he comes to you on lead. After a bit of training and practice the German Shepherd puppy should follow you easily. Don't struggle with the puppy at this point and if he resists lure him to you with a cookie or a treat of some sort. You do not want to get into a tug of war and you do not want to give in to the GSD puppy either. Keep luring the puppy to you with a treat and he'll eventually learn that it is good to do what he is asked to do and the GSD puppy will be rewarded for doing as asked. Here is one great leather leash to check into investing in. Chewing is also a very important factor in helping their incoming adult teeth settle properly. As the owner it is your job to help direct your new GSD puppy as to what things are healthy to chew on and which ones are not. Anti chew spray is just one of the helpful puppy supplies to help control destructive chewing by applying a very bad tasting spray on the object to discourage the dog from chewing on it. Saxten Kennel has racked up and impressive number of champions and BIS winners over the years. We have found that the long standing line bred feature in the Saxten pugs brings a lot to the breeding table. Shackie received his title in as well as Group 1 placement at his last show. We look forward to bringing Shackie out for more shows in as he is a winner AND fun to show. Lord Shackelton 1st explored Antartica at the beginning of the 19th century. He and his crew became strained and landed in Tasmania making an incredible story short. As a pup Shackie was an "explorer" so Richard and Anne named him Shackelton. Shackie is my best buddy. Our pugs live in a pack and it appears that Shackie is the pack Alpha. It is very interesting for me to watch pack behaviors. Shackie watches out for all his "ladies". We all honor Shackie except Shang. Shang and Bella seem to be their own pack at times. Then Bella seems to work between both packs. Everybody loves Bella, doesn't matter what she does. Our 3rd pug Am CH. Bonnie has a fantastic background including mum Ch. Bonnie easily attained her American Championship title in a little over a year after arrival. Bonnie is the result of planned line breedings by the Saxten Kennel for which we are pleased. This pug has an incredible golden coat. You may see a couple good photo shots of this coat under her name on this website. By the way.Bonnie came from a litter that where all named after old world Roses. Bonica is a beautiful old world sweet smelling rose. Bonnie is my "soul Sista". Bonnie is also apparently a nurse. Bonnie can spot a troubled painful spot on humans and gives it great interest and often licks the spot. Bonnie can also find painful spots on the other pugs and licks them as well. Most recently in Hawaii Bella earned her American Championship in three shows with three 5 point majors. At the one show Vito earned 8 points two 3 point majors as well as Group 4 this weekend. Vito is a golden pug like his mom, square body, straight back and lovely big round head like his dad. One of the features about Vito that I like best is that his noseroll is not black which makes his facial features stunning also like his mom. Sarah will be showing Vito next spring. We currently are getting his Rabies titers completed in order to show him next year on the mainland. Vito is a stunning pup who received many many compliments and lots of head turning at the recent show. Vito lives with Sarah and her husband Kevin and has recently learned to swim like a champ and romps in the woods like a bird dog. What a puggy! Jada's mom is Bonnie and Sire is Bosco. This little lady was my pick on the day she was born i think. Jada has an incredible head , is very short backed and has great "attitude". It will be interesting to see how she does in the show ring for .Jada is quite bossy and sassy with all who love her. We all love Jada of course. Jada just got two points at the Hilo Orchid Isle show which we are proud of. Our foundation dogs are 1st of all our beloved companions and secondly creating some incredible pups for the ring. If, however, there are any degenerative or immune mediated diseases or history of cancer, then the pet should be evaluated to determine the necessity of vaccinations after the puppy hood series has ended. While a vaccination for rabies is required by law in most states, and must be administered by a licensed veterinarian, many German Shepherd owners, for financial reasons, will choose to vaccinate their pets at home for all other infectious diseases.
