First off, Boxers are the absolute best family members imaginable. Luke and I gained our first boxer family member in .From the very beginning, we were hooked! We then gained our newest addition, Diva and boy does her name fit her well! We were overjoyed with our family fur-members and wanted to provide joy to other families. That is when we decided we wanted to breed Boxers and bring love and happiness to other families, just as our Boxers brought love and happiness into ours. Our family continued to grow, as did our happiness and joy! We now have 8 boxers and one spayed boxer mix. All are our fur-kids come first and foremost! Diva and Sergeant had their first litter in .Since then, we have learned so much about the breed and about producing healthy puppies. A lot of thought and research goes into each and every breeding. In the early part of , we started showing. This was such a new experience for us, but we enjoyed it so very much! Bailey was our first girl to show and she had a blast! Her face would light up when trotting around the ring. She obtained her International and National Champion Title that weekend and we were so very proud of her! Remington and Diva were a little hesitant at first, but ended up doing very well by the end of the weekend. By the 4th run, they were so excited to get out there and perform! They ran their hearts out and smiled while doing so. It also helped that daddy was there the second day and waiting at the finish line for them : Captain and Benelli went to their first show in June of .Benelli was just 3 months old and competed in the baby class. She did so very well! She gained great ratings that first day and caught the eyes of everyone there! Captain also did very well! He strutted around the ring and smiled the entire time! It was not hard to see that this was something he enjoyed so very much! We couldn't wait to get them back out there for the next show! In September of , we went to 2 shows! The first show was a UKC show. Captain and Bailey competed and had a blast. Captain obtained his UKC Champion. Bailey obtained all of the points needed and is now only waiting for her competition wins. We cant wait to call her a UKC Champion too! Captain gained his National, International and Honors Ch. At only 3 months old, Dawn made it to Best of Show during this show! It is the best feeling in the world to see the smiles on their faces and their eyes lighting up! They all had a blast! Captain obtained his Honors Bronze Champion Title. Both girls did well. They both won first in each of their classes and Dawn won Reserve Best of Breed in all four shows. We were unable to attend due to puppies being at home, but didnt want the girls to miss out on a great weekend of showing! Dawn got first in class for all three shows. Benelli got first in class all three shows. Benelli also got Reserve Best Female in two show and Best female in one show. For being at a show without mama and dad, the girls did so good! Im so proud of them and a special thanks to Angie for talking the girls! We look forward to the upcoming shows and we are so very excited!! Benelli gained another competition win and many points to add towards obtaining her UKC Champion Title! Harley won Reserve Ch x3 shows. Captain and our friend Junior handler Alicia Hood won x1 best Junior class! They both did great! Can't wait until the next show! Because Rabies is required by LAW in many States, Rabies can only be given to puppies over 12 weeks of age for this reason and in order to receive a Certificate of Immunization. Because your puppy will be 4 months old by his last scheduled puppy series vaccine it would be too soon to re vaccinate at the 1 year birthdate giving him his adult 1st booster only 8 months after his last puppy vaccine instead of a year from the last scheduled vaccine date. I recommend one booster at 3 years of age and then a titer test to determine if vaccination is needed for specific viruses and for prevention against hyper-vaccination of adult dogs thereafter. Boxer Dog House Training Overview Housebreaking your Boxer does not need to be a struggle of wits or will power between you and your dog. How do you properly house train a Boxer? By following 2 main rules: 1. Use a method that prevents your Boxer from eliminating inside the home. Provide and offer an area to relieve themselves that is both easily accessible and available when they need it. Keeping these 2 training rules in mind, housebreaking your Boxer can be done without stress or frustration. Rule 1 The goal is for your Boxer to not eliminate inside the house but how do you accomplish this? It is really easier than you might think. There are 2 basic methods. Watch them like a hawk - If you are lucky enough to be able to stay home with your Boxer until he or she is house trained, you can use the Umbilical Cord Training Method. If you are away during the day, default to this method any time that you are home and it can be reasonably incorporated. You will simply put a leash on your Boxer and tether the other end to you. You may connect it to your belt loop or around your wrist. The important element is that your Boxer will never be more than 6 feet away from you. With this method, you will take your Boxer puppy outside every 2 hours for a 2 month old, every 3 hours for a 3 month old and so on. The less a pup is allowed an opportunity to have an "accident" inside, the more successful the house training will be done. And we must remember that essentially there are no accidents. When nature calls, a puppy will urinate or eliminate where they are at that moment. Bladder and bowel muscles are not at full strength and the Boxer has little control in regard to holding needs. Therefore, it is the owner's job to make sure that their Boxer is outside in the bathroom area, at the time that the body calls for it. The other method is confinement by crating and is not recommended. For times that you cannot be right with your Boxer puppy , it is best to have him in a gated off area. If the room that you choose has carpeting, it is recommended to obtain a piece of linoleum, that will not be installed, it will simply be placed down. It's a good idea to keep the gate open when you are home, allowing your Boxer to check things out and even play, should he choose. It will allow him to get used to the area for times when you are not home. Do keep in mind that without full control over holding his needs, he must still be taken out at the times mentioned above. When you are not home, pee pads or paper can be placed down; however do not expect your puppy to learn 2 methods of housebreaking. The beneficial element is that it will be confined to one space easy to clean up and as the Boxer grows, he will be able to hold his needs for longer periods of time, with the end result being able to hold on for the 8 hours or so that owners are away for work. Rule 2 You must clearly show your Boxer where you expect him to go to the bathroom. If there are any doubts in your dog's mind about where he is supposed to eliminate this will make for one confused dog. And, it will most likely lead to that dog just giving up and going inside the home. Choose a spot that works well in all weather. What looks like a great location on a warm spring day may not work so great when your older, trained Boxer has to hike thorough a foot of snow to reach it in the winter. The area should be roughly 8 feet in diameter and used for nothing else but bathroom needs. If you want to play with your Boxer or do some outdoor command training , do this after he goes to the bathroom and in a separate location at least 15 feet from the bathroom area. The location that you choose as the main spot for your Boxer to use as a bathroom is vital. A dog will become very confused if you show them a new area each time you bring them outside. Just having the yard or "somewhere outside" is not specific enough and will impede progress. The 1 complaint that owners have in regard to housebreaking their puppy is that he or she urinates or eliminates right after coming back into the house. While this may just be a matter of the dog's body not having the need while outside, most of the time it is because an owner did not give the dog an opportunity to do so. Puppies need to sniff around - stand in the center of the chosen area - and with your Boxer on a 6 foot lead, allow him to sniff away any where within that diameter. As they are sniffing, their body is readying to push out a bowel movement and an owner must allow for enough time to go by for this to happen. To get them feeling happy and relaxed again , you might want to meet with a vet to see what's going on—and to rule out any physical conditions. You can also try a few habit changes and lifestyle tweaks to get them back to normal. I see depression a lot in dogs whose families have gone through a divorce," says Dr. Ochoa adds that dogs can get very attached to people and other pets, so when these relationships change, they can show signs of depression. If you think your dog is down in the dumps, here are the signs to look for and ways to help perk them back up. Fatigue "Most dogs that are depressed will lay around more and not really want to interact with other people in the house," says Ochoa. It could be their age, but if it's suddenly come on, or they're sleeping way too often, then it might be depression. Try to play with your dog using their favorite toy or take them for a walk. Changes in Appetite Sad and stressed dogs may also not want to eat or drink. So, look for any change from the normal diet and cravings. They could also be gaining weight. Some dogs just look sad Some dogs have faces which just look sad, no matter how they actually feel. This seems especially true of dogs with very wrinkly faces, such as Pugs and Bulldogs. Perhaps their wrinkles remind us of a human frown. And some dogs might be having you on! Domestic dogs have two small muscles which work to raise their inner eyebrows: the levator anguli oculi medialis muscle and the retractor anguli oculi lateralis muscle try saying those names five times quickly! Why Is My Dog Sad? The things which can make our dogs unhappy include: Illness Lots of the signs of an unhappy dog can be symptoms of a physical illness too. For example, a dog suffering severe joint pain from hip dysplasia or arthritis might go off their food and lose interest in exercise. And of course, any sort of illness can make them sad about feeling unwell. So if your dog is out of sorts, arrange a consultation with your vet to rule out underlying medical causes. Grief Dogs are a social species. Even their wild ancestors relied on strength in numbers for survival, and domestic dogs are capable of forming close emotional bonds with humans as well as other dogs. When dogs lose a person or pet they were closely bonded to, they go through a process like grief, which can include elements of sadness, depression, increased anxiety and stress. Loneliness Your dog can also feel sad if they suddenly have to start spending more time alone. There is lots of evidence that dogs mimic the body language of other dogs , which is regarded as the first building blocks of empathy. And there have been studies in the past where participating dogs were recorded sniffing, nuzzling and licking a stranger who was pretending to cry. The researchers attributed this combination of hormonal and behavioral responses to rudimentary cross-species empathy. All of which supports the idea that dogs can not only sense when we are sad, but they share in our sadness with us. Including the subtle nuances, like whether it passes quite quickly or stays with us for a long time. Here are 8 ways to restore them back to their happy selves: 1. Unless their vet says otherwise, dogs need an opportunity for exercise every day. Walking the same route every time can sap our enthusiasm for doing this, so keep a list of places you can go and refer back to it if you get stuck in a rut. In this case, look into dog strollers, or drive them somewhere and let them take in the view with the windows down when you get there. Mistreated Depression in Labradors There are several things that can cause a temporary or clinical, long-term depression in Labradors. If an owner or pet-friend dies, Labs will often become obviously sad. Their behavior changes and can be very worrisome to their owner. If you know that your dog has lost a pal, then you can sometimes just give him a couple weeks. I am no expert, but there seems to be a legit mourning period for dogs just like there is for people. Sometimes only time can fix those types of hurts. On the other hand, if you cannot figure out why your dog is moping around and refusing to eat, then you should get him to the vet as soon as possible. Bored Labradors were bred to be very active dogs. They need a serious amount of exercise. This is a ticket for one on a long guilty trip. Get your dog outside and go have some fun. One trip outside with a really good, long round of fetch, and your Lab will be back to his happy old self. You should consider 45 to 60 minutes of hard exercise an absolute must for full-grown Labs. Illness Apparent sadness can be an indicator that your dog does not feel well. An upset stomach or sore legs can slow a Labrador down and put a damper on their typical upbeat attitude. If you think your dog might be sick or sore, give her a gentle rub down. If you find a gentle spot, then you may have found the root cause as to why your Lab is sad. Bad Diet Just like trying to put gasoline in a diesel engine; a bad diet will slow down a Labrador. Remember, Labradors are bred for high octane energy. But if you are giving your dog lousy fuel, she will not be able to go at her typical high speed. She will lack the energy to do what she really wants to do—run and chase and run some more. When it comes to Labrador Retrievers, they are typically a very trusting dog. In fact, I believe that in order to be truly happy, Labs need strong relationships with the people in their lives. If they are robbed of those bonds, it will cause these typically friendly, happy dogs to become depressed and sad. It is not uncommon to find rescue Labs with this forlorn, sad look on their face. Their eyes can seem unusually shallow or hollow. The great news is that it usually only takes an extended experience with a loving family to restore the life to their eyes and their behavior.
