If you pick a puppy in good health and of impeccable breeding, you may get almost 20years with your best friend. And since Bolonoodles are relatively common, you should be able to find a breeder close to you. That cuts costs more on shipping and visiting your puppy before you bring them home. Since they are so slow to anger, it makes them great for children of all ages. Their size makes them perfect for small toddlers, as large breeds knock over children often. Apartment Friendly We already mentioned that these Doodles are suitable for apartments. But this is a major plus for people who have a hard time finding the perfect apartment dog. Their low barking is something all your neighbors will appreciate. But there are a few things that you should be aware of before getting a Bolonoodle. Grooming The biggest con of owning a Bolonoodle is how much grooming they require. Bolonoodles might have a hypoallergenic coat, but with it comes a lot of maintenance. You will need to have several grooming supplies on hand like combs, brushes, and dematting tools. If your dog has any mats left, then you will need to use the dematting rake. After all the knots are out, then you will need to brush your dog to pick up what little shed there is. Severely matted dogs have an increased risk of yeast, fleas, fungus, and even pain. When you brush them daily, you are making sure that they are staying healthy. Another part of grooming the Bolonoodle is taking them to the salon. Your dog will need to see a professional groomer every weeks for a hair cut. Small size is another plus for this because most groomers charge by size. Nevertheless, it still can get expensive. Mental Stimulation We mentioned before that Bolonoodles need a lot to keep them busy. This can be a con for full-time workers. It can take a lot of trial and error to see what will keep your dog happy while you are away. And it can be expensive trying to keep a proper rotation of toys. At any given point, you want about ten toys for your dog to play freely. Then you will want to have another set of toys that they use when you are gone for hours at a time. These should be brainteasers, interactive toys, or puzzles. And on top of it all, you will want to have enough toys to switch every couple of weeks. Separation Anxiety Keeping your dog from getting bored is only half the worry. The Bolonoodle is notorious for getting separation anxiety and do best with owners that spend a lot of time at home. If you work or travel a lot, a Bolonoodle may not be the right fit for you. If someone is home for the majority of the day, they do wonderfully for a few hours a day alone. They insisted that they had seen a black Bolognese while traveling in Europe on their honeymoon, that it was a cross with a Toy Poodle and called the poor man's Bolognese. For the most part, this is the case, though female Bolonoodles are often stubborn and independent, which can make them harder to train than males. Retinal Dysplasia: Retinal dysplasia is an early-onset form of progressive retinal atrophy that usually becomes noticeable around months old. Patellar Luxation: Patellar luxation is a kneecap that dislocates. Progressive Retinal Atrophy: Progressive retinal atrophy is the degeneration of photoreceptor cells in the eyes that leads to vision loss and blindness. Mitral Valve Disease: Mitral valve disease is when the mitral valve of the heart begins to leak. It can cause heart murmurs and congestive heart failure. All Bolonoodles are small dogs, so size differences between the sexes are minimal. However, there are notable temperamental differences between males and females. Females tend to be independent and stubborn. Males are usually the friendlier dogs that want to please their owners. This makes males much easier to train. The stubborn independence of a female Bolonoodle can be difficult for anyone to train, but especially for a new dog owner. It only makes sense that their offspring, the Bolonoodle, would also be hypoallergenic. Poodles are widely considered to be some of the smartest dogs in the world, and Bolognese are thought to be the smartest of the Bichon-type breeds. Put them together and you get a very smart dog that needs a lot of mental stimulation. Without enough mental engagement, your Bolonoodle could easily become mischievous and even destructive. Like the Labrador Retriever, Poodles were originally created to be water retrievers that would retrieve waterfowl shot down by hunters in bodies of water. To be successful, these dogs had to be great swimmers and love the water, which is a trait still shared by Poodles and their offspring today, including the Bolonoodle. They have minimal maintenance needs and are incredibly friendly, playful dogs. Highly intelligent canines, Bolonoodles do require lots of mental stimulation to alleviate boredom and prevent mischievous behavior. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Phantom A phantom brown and white Labradoodle coat starts with a single solid brown color base and then shows clearly defined markings in some or all of the following areas: Face On each side of the muzzle In a bowtie formation across the chin and chest On all four legs On all four feet The white portions of the coat must also be less than 50 percent of the total coat color. Not all Labradoodle breeders agree about what a true phantom coat looks like. In some cases, a breeder may call a phantom coat one where only brown and black colors are present. In this case, a coat where white is also present would be called a Phantom Parti. To make naming matters even less clear-cut, the tri-color coat that some breeders will call a Phantom Parti other breeders will call a Tri-color, Multi-color or Multi-pattern coat. Abstract An abstract brown and white Labradoodle will have brown predominating in the coat and the remainder less than 50 percent of the coat white. There is no uniform specification as to where the white markings must occur. Extreme Parti An extreme parti brown and white Labradoodle will have white as the dominant coat color. With accents of brown that can be located anywhere but are often located on the face or ears. Mismarks Mismarks refers to a coat color where the white markings are present, but do not conform to any of the other coat color patterns that have already been mentioned. White mismarks can occur with any base coat color, including brown. While mismarks in general are fairly common. However, two types of mismarks are sufficiently rare to be worth singling out for mention: Irish Spotting and Tuxedo. Irish Spotting The first of these rare mismarks is called Irish spotting. The amount of white can be pronounced or minimal. Tuxedo Mismarks An even rarer and more prized mismark is the tuxedo. As you are probably already imagining, the tuxedo mismark is a pronounced patch of white that appears on the chest. It then snakes up and around the back of the neck just like a tuxedo vest. Tuxedo mismarks often include white patches on the paws and face as well. Multi-Pattern A multi-pattern, multi-color or tri-color also called phantom parti coat will include a base color, a second color and white. In the case of a multi-pattern brown and white Labradoodle, what this would look like is a base coat color of brown with a secondary lighter brown color the phantom part and then white mismarks the tri or multi color part. Multi-Pattern Sable Last but not least, there is the multi-pattern sable coat color pattern. Here, the Labradoodle will have everything we just described in the previous section about the multi-pattern coat color plus the sable coat pattern. The sable coat pattern, in case you are not familiar, causes the tips of each hair to turn black. Sable is a coat pattern that tends to emerge over time and can sometimes cause the coat to strikingly change color as the Labradoodle grows up. Brown and White Labradoodle Genetics Now you know that a brown and white Labradoodle coat can look quite different depending on the amount of each color the coat contains. One brown and white Labradoodle may be categorized as a true parti coat while another brown and white Labradoodle may have white mismarks, an extreme parti or even an abstract coat color pattern. Each is actually quite rare. So rare, in fact, that it is often said no two brown and white Labradoodle coats will ever look exactly alike. All dogs have two basic pigments: black and red eumelanin and pheomelanin. Different genes will act on these pigments to produce every dog pattern and color we see in breeds today, including the lovely brown and white coat pattern. Labradoodle coat colors can change quite dramatically from puppyhood through young adulthood. Sometimes this happens more than once as the puppy grows up. Not surprisingly, this trait can make it challenging for even an experienced and genetically savvy Labradoodle breeder to accurately predict exactly what each puppy will grow up to look like. The most common coat color change is a lightening of the base coat color. A commonly cited secondary change is the development of highlights when the coat is repeatedly exposed to ultraviolet light sunlight. For example, a Labradoodle may be born with a very dark brown coat. As the dog grows up, white patches begin to appear. At the same time, the dark brown base color begins to progressively lighten. Before you know it, you are looking at a brown and white Labradoodle! Brown and White Labradoodle Temperament Like their coat color, the temperament traits that Labradoodle puppies will inherit from their parents is impossible to predict. Luckily, the Lab and Poodle parent breeds are relatively similar, so we have a general idea of what you can expect. Brown and white Labradoodle puppies will be just as friendly, energetic, and intelligent as any other color. But, take a look at the specific dogs being bred to see how your puppy might turn out. As long as you socialize and train your doodle pup from a young age, they will be friendly, affectionate, and loyal to you. This breed is best trained with positive reward methods, as they are eager to please and most often very food-motivated. They do best in active families with plenty of time to spend with them. If left alone for too long, or too often, they can develop separation anxiety. And, if not exercised properly, they can display destructive behaviors like barking, digging, and more. I used to also raise Golden Retrievers but as I am getting older I decided to downsize a bit and concentrate primarily on Labradors, and decided on a fun name change for my kennel as well. I am blessed to live on two acres with a pool, at the end of a suburban street, almost unheard of nowdays. Houses have popped up all around us and more are going in every year, but I am still happy to have my little oasis! My dogs have a couple of large exercise yards with obstacles to play on as well as covered kennels that they can run into in case of bad weather. Additionally they have house time and pool time, my dogs all love to swim! I have a large number of grandchildren that visit frequently and several neighbor children that visit nearly every day that I have puppies! My puppies are born here and raised with tender loving care along with plenty of cuddle time and socialization with people of all ages, as well as large and small dogs. I have a large climate controlled kennel room with a doggy door to an outdoor area for mom. From birth to three weeks is the neonatal period where I keep a close eye on growth and development. I provide exercises to help develop my pups' neurological systems such as Early Neurological Stimulation and Early Scent Introduction. At three weeks,my puppies are potty trained to go in large low sided boxes filled with pine pellets for ease in keeping their area clean and sanitary, and as a stepping stone to housebreaking. Pups are given plenty of age appropriate toys and a large crate with soft bedding in which they learn that the crate is a nice den. Once my pups begin the weaning process they are fed moistened super premium all life stages kibble formulated with the proper ratios for slow growth which helps to prevent joint disorders. Prior to going to new homes, the pups will be microchipped, dewormed, vaccinated and have had a complete physical by our veterinarian. My adult dogs are thoroughly screened for potential health problems that come up in the Labrador breed prior to embarking on motherhood or fatherhood. They pass a hip clearance and an elbow clearance, where those joints are xrayed and the xrays are read and graded by an impartial board called the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. They pass a cardiac and patella clearance, are screened yearly by a veterinary Ophthalmologist for inherited eye disorders, and have DNA tests to rule out potential genetic disorders as well.
