This means that I want to see that either the mom or dad, preferably both, have AKC retriever field trial titles , AKC retriever hunting test titles or UKC retriever hunting test titles behind their names on an official pedigree. Be sure you see field trial or hunt test titles. Sometimes you will see AKC show titles or other titles like agility. These are NOT the same as field trial or hunt test titles and are generally not something you want to see on the pedigree of a hunting or competition dog. There are many places to search for litters on the internet. And many sites offer the ability to limit your search by state. However, do not be afraid to look for puppies further away from you. If the litter has a great pedigree and is exactly what you are looking for, you can always have the puppy flown or shipped to you. Some of the sites that are good for looking for litters are: retrievertraining. Again, I am not saying that great dogs cannot come out of these places but rather that the odds are not in your favor. Why are hunting titles important? Hunting titles tell you that the dog has proven its ability to perform at a certain level. It also tells you that the genetics are there. If the parents can perform at a Field Champion or Master Hunter level, there is a good chance the puppies will also have that ability. Do all your research prior to going to look at the puppies Everybody loves puppies. They are cute, cuddly and so lovable. That is why I recommend that you do not ever go look at a litter that does not already meet your standards regarding pedigree. It is just too easy to end up bringing one home. And if you have kids or a spouse involved, I guarantee that any litter you go look at you are most certainly going to end up bringing home a puppy. Does color make a difference? Well-bred puppies are available in each of these colors, and we have trained excellent hunting dogs in each color. However, you may now see litters advertised as fox red or white. So, a new hunting partner can be a significant investment. But for us it is worth it to stack the odds in our favor. Find a great retriever breeder Unfortunately, not all breeders are equal. Over the years, some breeders have stood out to us as exceptional. They go over and beyond just taking good care of the puppies. You can tell they really want their puppies to turn out great and they take steps, while the pups are very young, to help ensure their puppies have a good strong foundation that will help them succeed in the future. Beyond the breeding of quality dogs, the difference is in the socialization of the puppies. Breeders that go out of their way to socialize young pups are worth their weight in gold. The truth is that raising puppies, done the right way, takes a lot of time and commitment. Ask prospective breeder the right questions When you call and talk to a breeder about an upcoming litter, it is important to get answers to some important questions. If the pedigrees are not available online, be sure and request one from the breeder. How often do you breed? How often has this mother been bred? When looking for a great hunting dog puppy, you want to avoid puppy mills. Puppy mills are breeders that are just pumping out puppies for money and without concern to the overall health and betterment of the breed. Responsible breeders have a plan for the litters they are producing and will be able to talk to you about why the litter is worth the money they are asking. What breeds do you breed? Often, they work with other breeders so both the Dam and Sire may not be onsite. And if you are basing your pup purchase off pedigree first, as I would recommend, you already know the most important things about the parents. If looks are important to you, then photos of the parents will show you what you need to know. Choose a retriever puppy from the litter Once you decide on a litter, the waiting begins. Ask the breeder to provide videos and photos of puppies as the grow. This is a great way to see the puppies progress and you can see some personality traits in the different pups. If you did all the work in researching pedigree and breeders, you already have stacked the odds in your favor. You know that the litter is a good one and that the puppies have a good chance of turning out to be great hunting partners. This is important because it takes a lot of pressure off when it is time to pick the puppy from the litter. When you do go to the breeder to pick your puppy, take a few minutes to observe the puppies. This will allow you to see some personality traits. Understand though that this is only one snapshot in time. The puppy that is active at this time, might have been sleeping right before you showed up. Never seen a dog love water as much as she does. Obsessed is a better word. She is perfect. She is now one and a half years old. The vet said her hips are in great condition. Her temperament is calm even around two kids and a brand new baby. She seems to even think the baby is her puppy. She will come running when he starts to cry. We have another dog and two cats and she is good with them as well. We drove over 10 hours to pick her out. Cari was diligent to stay in touch with us each week with pictures and updates on the litter. Her attention to detail in the breed and guarantee on their health was encouraging to us. When I met Rhea for the first time, Rhea walked up to me and just sat in my lap. That second I knew Rhea was the shepherd for me. I contacted the Halls when I saw that Jewels had a litter of puppies. Thor was just like Rhea loved to be around people and has a great loving personality. And when Thor and Rhea are together they play for hours. Siouxz is a perfect puppy with a great temperament. She loves to run, play in the woods, go to the dog park, swim, chase sticks and tennis balls, and wrestle with our ridgeback and pit bull. She likes people and other dogs. She is very smart and observant. Siouxz is sweet and loving, not our usual experience with shepherds. It is very obvious that Cari takes excellent care of all of her pups. He is wonderful with all children and people he meets. He loves to play. We got a new puppy that is small and he plays gently with her. He is a very gentle loving dog. We had a man from search and rescue tell us that Blitz was one of the most well balanced dogs he had seen. He is extremely intelligent. However, the puppy was now in need of a new home. I came to learn that her name was Mieka, and that an aggressive, adult dog at her new home had rejected her presence with violent action. After I met Mieka and saw her spunky personality, I had to have her! As the neonatal period of weeks old is especially influential in forming a puppies future behavior, socialization, and confidence, I knew that Meika might come with some special needs after being in a very scary situation with an aggressive adult dog during this crucial time period. However, to my absolute delight, Mieka has both defied and surpassed all of my expectations for her! Mieka is submissive, but very confident, and she is extremely social both with humans as well as other dogs. Even if she is the youngest dog in the group at our GSD dog park play dates, Mieka loves to romp and rough house with her bigger cousins and buddies. She never shies away from a chance to play! Her intrinsic love of learning should make any GSD enthusiast proud. In addition, Mieka is driven by her nose and we are currently exploring a possible future in the Search and Rescue field of service. She is loving, kind, and loyal. My husband and I are both smitten with her! While I had not purchased Mieka directly from Cari Hall, Cari welcomed me into her GSD family with open arms, answering questions, offering support, etc. Paige, Cordova, TN After moving to Memphis eight years ago, my husband and I lost our 15 year old german shepherd to rolling her stomach. That left us one german shepherd who was only a year old. After 7 years we decided to get another german shepherd for Brandy to play with. My husband and I went over and met the Halls and were very impressed with not only their care for these animals but their love and commitment! The puppies were gorgeous. If I had more land I would have bought two. We fell in love with GiGi and brought her home at 6 weeks. Brandy immediately accepted her as her new sister. Gigi loves children, our friends and family. She has a great personality and is very gentle. My mother had dementia and was in a nursing facility. I took Gigi up there for visits and it just made my moms day as well as other senior citizens. He is very protective of my 5 grandchildren. We live in a very rural area and feel totally safe because of this very smart dog. He is such a big part of our family. It did not take much to convince my husband: The Halls were great to deal with and very informative. I loved all the facts, details and concerns the Halls have for their GSD as well as the pups going to their fur ever homes. Koda was very easy to train, gets along great with my Boxer and kids. Our Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Weimaraner passed, so we were looking for another breed. From the day we picked him up, Zeus immediately bonded with our family. We have two adult Heinz 57 dogs that we have had for ten and five years respectively. My husband fell in love with our lil Shelby and we eagerly awaited the six week mark so we could bring her home! We met with Cari and her family several times before Shelby turned six weeks and Cari always sent us updated photos of our growing baby. He is very alert and protective of me and the cat , but whenever I have visitors, he is very friendly and playful with them. He is not hyper like so many other large breed dogs. Overall, I have been so happy with my my GSD! Dino has been a joy to have since day one. He is so good with my younger cousins, family and friends. My dad acts like Dino is his dog daddy always wanted a shepherd. He came with all his papers, food, a list of instructions from Cari, etc. He is my baby boy that I love sooooo much.
