I read through, this interesting research study by the University of California to understand just how much dogs do experience jealousy. In the experiment. Dog owners were asked to pay attention to and give affection to three different objects in plain view of their dogs. The first object was a book, next to a Jack-O-Lantern plastic pumpkin and the last was a stuffed dog toy that could bark and walk. The owners were told to interact with these objects as if they were real dogs. They talked to them as if they were talking to their own dog. They also completely ignored their own dog while doing so. Interestingly enough the toy dog received the biggest reaction from the dogs as they displayed many of the behaviors that were considered signs of jealousy. So if you think your Golden Retriever has gotten jealous then yes you are probably right. The earlier you intervene the easier it will be to help correct any aggressive behaviors before it goes too far. Here are some signs to watch for. They may also feel like they need to protect you from someone or something. What Does it Mean? Dogs are historically social animals and always run with a pack, whenever someone or something is threatening a member of their pack they mark their territory as a signal for others to stay away. Your Golden Retriever could be trying to take a stand by making his claim through urinating all over his property. Your home is their safe place, if someone new enters they may be worried about that safe place being invaded. They are also creatures of habit, so even if your sweet innocent Golden Retriever is well socialized as a puppy he could still have problems when his routine is interrupted by a perceived threat to his pack. Adding a new person or pet to your household is most likely the cause of this sudden jealous behavior. There can be other reasons too, however. If your dog is bored and he sees you engaged with other people or things it could cause him to react with jealousy. If your Golden Retriever sees or perceives that you are giving more of your attention and love to someone or something else this may cause him to feel insecure and cause feelings of jealousy. A suddenly mobile toddler or baby could also be alarming to your Golden Retriever. If your child has recently learned to crawl or walk it could be unsettling to your Golden Retriever and he may not know how to react to it. He could also feel very threatened that the new mobility of your child is endangering his space. What to Do! Feeling possessive of you or his toys or other resources like his food or water can make a Golden Retriever act in an aggressive jealous way. This is a natural instinct for all dogs as many are bred with the intention of protecting their owners from threats. Noticing how your dog feels is the first step to helping him overcome his jealousy before it becomes dangerous aggression. Figuring out why he feels that way may take a little more investigative work. Tip: Keep a diary or notebook and write down any time he shows signs of jealousy, what he was doing and why you may think it happened, soon you will start to notice a pattern. Let them feed your dog, give them praise and treats, let them bond with your pet, and be their new best friend for a while while you…. Your Golden Retriever is Jealous of the Baby If your Golden Retriever is jealous of your new baby you may have your work cut out for you. The best time to prepare your pooch for a new baby is… well before that precious bundle arrives. Dogs like routine and predictability none of which describes life with a newborn. If you are able to slowly prepare your home and your Golden Retriever for life with a new baby then you will be less likely to see jealous behaviors. If you missed that opportunity or your pup is still having problems all is not lost. It will take some time, but your pup can find peace again. Some tips to help with a new baby are: Never leave your baby unattended around your dog. This helps to prevent resource guarding. Make sure your dog has a solid understanding of basic commands. Keep a safe and quiet place for your dog to escape to his crate or bed in a different room when the baby gets too much for him. Give him treats and praise for all positive interactions so he can learn to associate a new baby with pleasant things. Let your dog get used to the baby on his own terms never force him. Include him in walks and playtime. Give your dog an item of clothing or blanket that smells like your baby and reward him for being around it. Seek professional help if your dog gets aggressive. Your Golden Retriever is Jealous of a New Pet Have you recently gotten another Golden Retriever thinking that you were going to have a best friend for your current dog? When you run into problem behaviors and you need to redirect with something else use these commands, and you should have a stronger chance of seeing compliance. Even if you have done this before, it could be a great refresher as well as save you from having to make heartbreaking decisions if his aggression were to get out of hand later on. Your dog will need to use their bodies to let someone else know if they are in their space. It may happen without us really paying attention to what is going on. If the trigger for this behavior is that you are giving someone else attention, then this is a sign your dog is jealous. Going to Their Quiet Place Some dogs are not good at expressing their jealousy and they may become despondent instead. Many Golden Retrievers and older dogs are not going to do some of the other signals to show they are jealous. They may just head to their crate or another spot to be alone. This is sometimes a sign that they are not feeling well. If they do it often, then it may be a sign that something else is wrong, but if it seems to happen when you give someone else attention, then it is likely your Golden Retriever feels jealous. Seeking Attention Another reason why your Golden Retriever may show they are jealous is that they are seeking your attention. They may try to steal your shoe, bringing you their blanket, or doing something else that gets you to look at them. If you notice that this tends to happen when you are giving someone else in the home attention, then it is likely done to get you to pay attention to the dog. How to Stop Jealousy In Your Golden Retriever If your Golden Retriever is showing some signs of being jealous, then it is a good idea to take steps to stop any bad behavior that they may exhibit. Some advice out there tells you to give your dog more attention when they exhibit these behaviors. This is a bad idea because it rewards bad behavior in your dog and will encourage them to keep acting in that way. Luckily, there are a few other methods that you can use to help stop the jealousy in your Golden Retriever and make sure that they behave the way that you want. Some of these include: Give Them Exercise If your dog has had some time to run around outside and get tired, they have less time to feel jealous about the people and other animals around them. Sometimes they may get jealous simply because they need to run off some of the energy that they have. The next time they start to show some of the signs we discussed above, take them on a long walk and see if that helps. Feed Your Dogs Separately If you have more than one dog in the home and your Golden Retriever seems to be acting jealous, then it is time to feed them separately. Food can make dogs jealous the most and it will lead to the dogs fighting and misbehaving. Feed the dogs at the same time, but have them eat in different rooms or have one inside and one outside. Pay Attention to the Good Behavior Rather than paying attention to the bad behavior and giving them more attention, it is better to pay attention when your Golden Retriever is behaving well. If they try to get onto you or are right on top of you, you can gently push them away or use your own body to block their advances. If there are children around the home or you have other animals, sometimes the dog will feel like you are giving attention to the others rather than to them. With some of the tips above, you will be able to provide your Golden Retriever with some of the attention they need, without rewarding their bad behavior, and you can get them to stop feeling so jealous.

How to Draw a Golden Retriever For this tutorial I decided to draw a golden retriever as I see a lot of people struggle with the coloring of Goldens. Goldens come in a variety of golden tones from a deep red to a pale, almost white golden color. This Golden Retriever is a mid-range golden color. I chose this reference for his sweet expression, which is common to this breed. Here is the reference photo from Pixabay. I cropped the original a bit. I thought the color would be a nice background to work on, giving a warm glow to the final drawing. Start with an Accurate Line Drawing I start with a sketch showing the details I want to draw and the placement of the important features. Getting the Eyes Right I usually always start with the eyes. The reference photo shows reflections of the window and shadows in the eye. I want to try to convey this in my drawing, so I start by placing those highlights with White. Then I start layering Sienna Brown, Chocolate, Light Umber, and Dark Brown into each eye using a sharp point and light pressure to build up the layers slowly. I outline the eye and draw the pupil with Black, and use Blue Slate in the highlights. Next, Draw the Hair Around the Eyes Remember to always look closely at the reference photo and observe how the fur is arranged and growing. Start at the root of the hair and draw outward the way the fur grows. This gives you a sharp line at the end of the hairs and makes the hair look more natural. Then I begin building up layers with lighter colors such as Light Umber, Beige, Peach, Sand, and Goldenrod, working from light to dark. I continue layering those colors, but if I see another color in the reference photo, I add it as I work. In addition, I keep drawing hair-like strokes in the direction the fur grows. I lay in the darkest areas in the ear with Sepia and Light Umber. I wash the whole ear with Sand using a light touch. Next I use White in the highlighted areas of the ear to create depth. Then I use a wash of Beige before going over the ear again with layers of Sepia and Light Umber to create more shadows. With each layer, I draw more details in the ear, repeating the same process with the colors mentioned until I am finished. When the ear is finished, I move to the other side of the face and ear using the same method and colors. Continue checking the reference photo as you work, and look for the color placement and apply colors accordingly. I drew the light and dark areas lightly with White and Light Umber to show the contours of the face. I finish the muzzle using the same colors as the rest of the fur. To start the nose, I mark the highlights with White and the darkest areas with Black. Drawing the Neck and Chest The next area is the fluffy hair beneath the chin and ear. I draw in the area with Light Umber. Using various colors as previously stated, I add several layers of color so I can use the solvent to blend them smoothly. You need 4 to 5 layers to get a smooth blend when using solvent. I use a light touch and draw lines to show definition in the fur and shadows. Sometimes, I also use the pencil on its side, softly creating a wash over the whole area. I repeated this step until I got the drawing where I wanted it. Once the main colors are in place, I continue adding more layers and details, still using pretty much the same colors throughout the piece. For the solvent blend, I apply the solvent with a little brush and make sure to follow the direction of the hair with the brush. This softens the colors without completely blending them and makes them look more natural. The solvent also makes the colors look brighter. I apply this with a small brush over the areas I blended with solvent. You can see this in this photo. The Final Steps Just before finishing the drawing, I place it in a comparison split photo to see how the colors compare side-by-side. I needed to add more Goldenrod and Greyed Lavender. I also added Dark Umber in the dark areas and then went in again with the Titanium White mixture to add more depth. To add whiskers, I first used White, then went over them with Titanium White mixture to punch them up. Then I converted the reference photo to black-and-white for a comparison of values without color. This is the finished piece. My thanks to Peggy for another great tutorial.
