It is our commitment to health as a first priority that has enabled us to now be in a position to have lines with truly good health. We currently own six dogs. MANY breeders of imported Golden Retrievers have now adopted a practice of getting FCI health testing done on puppies and dogs under a year of age by unscrupulous breeders overseas. These tests are done before hips and elbows are developed and before possible hip dysplasia will show up. How We Raise Our Puppies There are always three experienced adults working full time raising our puppies a husband, wife, and adult daughter. If we should have more than two litters that overlap, our other adult daughter will also help. When puppies are here, they are our priority. Everything else in our lives takes a back seat to the puppies so we can work full time around the clock doing puppy work. Our home is large enough for all puppies to be raised inside our home. We have five doggy doors to five different puppy play yards where puppies over 5 weeks freely live coming in and out of our home. We have almost a dozen fenced areas, and a total of nine acres fenced for our dogs and puppies. By far, most that try to earn it fail. Tara and Karen earned the required points in less than a year and a half including time off for Tara to whelp and raise a litter of puppies and for Karen to raise and train dozens of other puppies. There were less than 70 dogs to earn it nationwide in .Karen has also recently won Combined High in Trial on the last day of the Southeastern regional competition. There are eleven regions in the U. The regional competitions are where the best competitors in the country compete to earn invitations to the National Obedience Competition the NOC. The NOC is the most prestigious obedience event in the country. Each region hosts only one regional competition a year and the NOC happens only once a year as well. Tara has also been invited to perform obedience at the Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster. Positive Reinforcement Training Only! Karen is one of very few trainers in the competitive obedience world who uses exclusively positive reinforcement training. Most importantly, Karen and Jenna use the same positive techniques with our puppies that have been used to create an obedience champion. The biggest requirement that keeps us from being a match for most is that someone must have considerable time for the puppy. Raising a German Shepherd puppy can feel like an overwhelming task at first! Just remember, your 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy is also adjusting to its new life with you. You should expect your 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy to feel stressed and uncertain. They may seem timid and unsure of their surroundings. They might cry, whine, and not want your attention. Having structure and consistency will help create a bond and help you both in getting along more peacefully and calmly. Introducing A Puppy Crate Many dog owners choose to use a crate when it comes to caring for their 8-week-old puppy. While some people consider crates unnecessary, or even cruel, crate training is a useful skill to offer your dog. With the right training your pup will see its crate as their private safe space and will even go there to relax. Leaving your puppy at home unsupervised can get them and you into a heap of trouble. Crate training helps prevent your home from being a destruction zone. This useful guide to crate training a German Shepherd puppy gets you on the right track to success! Crate training your puppy can: help speed up housetraining teach your dog to settle calm down offer your dog privacy But you must introduce the crate slowly and positively so your puppy builds a strong connection to the benefits of the crate. Never just shove or push your young German Shepherd into the crate without using positive training. Your new dog also needs a routine and schedule to help them through the early days with you and set the expectations you have for them. Having a schedule helps your puppy to know what to expect in their daily routines. It keeps you from losing your mind and helps ease a worried puppy. While you might work from home or have other obligations, try to follow a schedule that looks similar to this: Early morning: Take your puppy out for the first potty break of the day! So, they may need to go outside even before the sun rises. Breakfast time: Your puppy may want to go back to sleep after going outside and this is perfectly normal. Either way, always take your puppy back outside shortly after their breakfast so they can sniff and have another potty break. Mid-morning: Puppies should eat 3 — 4 small meals a day. Breeders can often tell by the time a dog is a few weeks old what type of coat it will have, and can help match you to the best coat type for your situation. If you are allergic to dog saliva, and your skin breaks out in hives when licked by a dog, you will most likely be allergic to all bernedoodles regardless of coat type. The Premier F1 Standard Bernedoodle is a low- to mostly nonshedding we use standard poodles that do not carry the improper coat alleles and Bernese mountain dogs that have thick wavy curly coats.If you want a guarantee on non shedding, then you should try to select an F1b or F1bb bernedoodle. Both look amazingly similar to the F1 standard bernedoodles but maybe a little smaller. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding.We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. The Consequences of too Many Baths for Labradoodles If you wash a Labradoodle too frequently, we risk damaging their adult coat. The coat needs time to grow and develop properly. If you wash your dog too often, you could damage its natural protective oils and leave it feeling rough and scratchy. The likelihood of skin irritation or reaction to cleaning equipment also increased with an over-washed coat. Dry skin, loose hair, and irritated skin need to be monitored. Both dogs and cats can be affected, showing thinning of their hair coat, round bald patches, or crusty lesions. Beware though, as cats can be carriers without showing any signs. It is present in a healthy dog but in small numbers. The presence of the Demodex mites within the follicles will cause bald patches, often around the head and paws. Alongside skin and hair coat changes, you may notice increased thirst, increased appetite, weight gain, and panting. However, sometimes these glands can go into overproduction, which can leave your dog with a greasy or oily coat. This is often combined with increased turnover of skin cells and is known as seborrhea or seborrheic dermatitis. Despite the increased production of oil, the coat is not always greasy. It can sometimes be dry, and there is often flakey skin or scurf present. If your dog has seborrheic dermatitis, you might also notice a smell due to bacteria and yeast thriving in a coat affected by seborrhea. Some dog breeds are prone to seborrhea, and they may have it from a young age. Other causes can include contact irritations from shampoos or other chemicals, skin allergies, and other causes of inflammation. Yeast overgrowth If your dog has an overgrowth of yeast commonly a yeast called Malassezia on their skin, you will notice a particular smell around them. It can also make your dog intensely itchy. Other causes of greasy hair coat Other less common conditions that can cause greasy and flakey skin include hypothyroidism low thyroid hormone , bacterial skin infections pyoderma , and certain types of tumors or cancer. Some of these techniques include: Coat brushing If they suspect fleas may be the cause, one of our veterinarians might brush the coat with a flea comb, collecting the hair and any debris onto a wet cotton wool swab. If there are fleas, the flea dirt will dissolve on the wet cotton wool leaving a red stain. Sometimes, parasites can be seen on the hair itself, however, sometimes the hair needs to be sent to the laboratory to check for conditions like ringworm. Skin scrapes A skin scrape is often used to look for parasites like the Demodex mite or ear mites, and as traumatic as the name sounds, it actually only involves gently removing the surface layers of cells from the skin with a scraping motion. Once we have a sample of skin cells on a microscope slide, we can use the microscope to check for parasites. Skin biopsy Your veterinarian might need to take a small sample of skin under anesthetic. This can be looked at in detail by the external laboratory team who will be able to recognize patterns that might suggest a bacterial, hormonal, cancerous, or allergic cause. How are hair coat issues treated? What can I do at home? Although it can seem obvious to bathe your dog or cat! Skin supplements like cod liver oil and other sources of omega 3 and 6 and essential fatty acids can be helpful to maintain the skin barrier, preventing infection. Other specific skin supplements may contain vitamins A, B, D, and E, as well as anti-oxidants. Shampoos Following advice from one of our vets, the best management may be a medicated shampoo. For allergic conditions, a hypoallergenic or mild shampoo would be recommended, whereas for a yeast overgrowth there are antifungal shampoos. Seborrheic dermatitis can be successfully managed by using specialized shampoos that can loosen the crusts and remove some of the oil without irritating the skin or making it dry and encouraging more oil production. Conditions like ringworm and Demodex can also require topical treatment in the form of a medicated rinse. What can I do? In some cases, the same shampoo formulation is available as a foam, spray, or wipe alternative. Antibiotics If your dog or cat has a skin infection, your veterinarian might prescribe a course of antibiotics. Because the skin is made up of many layers, an antibiotic course for skin infections can last several weeks. Anti-itch and anti-allergy medications There are medications including steroids and non-steroidal medications that can reduce itching and inflammation of the skin.
