Great question my friend! Boxers are known to have issues with their skin and coat. If removing dead hair is not done weekly or regularly, dead hairs could keep collecting and become compacted to the dog under their coat. Boxers were bred to be taken care of so their coat needs to be brushed weekly. Boxers are a little unique in that they clean themselves as stated above. However, this is not enough to get the dead hair off of your boxer. You can still allow your boxer to clean themselves throughout the week, but the recommendation is to still brush your boxer weekly before you bathe them. Techniques to Groom Your Boxer There are techniques in order to brush your boxer effectively. If you do this, you might be missing key areas of the dog and still not removing all that dead hair. Boxers are considered moderate shedders which means they need weekly brushing in order to remove that dead hair. The first technique is to use circular motions all around your boxer. These circular motions serve two purposes for your boxer. One is to help with removing those dead hairs that might have accumulated. Another is to massage your dog while you go. This might help your boxer sit still long enough to get the brushing done. This will pull out dead hairs on the way down and get the pesky ones on the way back. And we all want our dog to feel good, right? Skimming is just running the brush lightly over the coat without getting to the dead hair follicle. This is not an effective way to brush your boxer. This will leave dead hairs, which could result in issues down the road. This includes hard to reach areas or smaller areas such as their legs, face, and tail. You want to be careful in areas like this in order to keep your dog safe. Use small motions and be very gentle. Brush Types for Boxers There are a variety of brush types that you could use to brush your boxer. These are specific options for brushes. We are going to be talking about the actual type of brush that would be good for your boxer. The first we are going to be discussing is any rubber curry brushes. A rubber curry brush is a brush with long rubber bristles that help with the removal of dead hairs. These bristles help with removing junk build-up that your dog may have encountered that week. Some of the links in this post are affiliate, and we may earn a commission. Check Price on Amazon We earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you. The next type of brush we are going to talk about is shredding brushes. These brushes are specifically designed to help you get rid of dead hair on your boxer. You should be looking for a short hair shredding brush in order to get the right one for a boxer. The last type of brush we are going to talk about is not actually a brush. This small hand tool is a shedding glove. Buying a good brush for your boxer would be good in order to maintain their coat. Dog Brushing After Care After brushing your boxer, it is recommended that you give your boxer a bath every three to four weeks. Bathing dogs help clean their hair much like you and I would clean our hair. In order to help cut down on the excess oils for your boxer, it should be the bathing process. If your bathe and brush your boxer too often, you could cause irritation, which we do not want. The irritation that you may see with washing too often will be dry skin and itching. You should stick to the recommended amount of time for brushing and bathing that we reference in this article. Brushing your boxer gets their coat and hair ready to be cleaned. You have effectively brushed out all of the junk that your boxer might have collected throughout the week. You have effectively brushed out all the dead hairs and ensured that their hair is not getting matted to their skin. Brushing your boxer does not need to be difficult and you should be doing it in order to maintain their overall health and well-being. Family Dog Expert Author Hi there! My passion for dogs drives me to share my knowledge and expertise, helping families build strong, loving bonds with their four-legged friends. Welcome to Sirdoggie A blog crafted with love for all dog lovers and their families! Excerpts from PetCareRx Boxers have very little odor and stay clean for long periods of time. Still, grooming is an important part of a good health regiment. With a short, tight coat that doesn't mat or tangle, the Boxer dog is practically "wash and wear. But it's not necessarily this way for all Boxers. There may be skin-related issues that require you to bathe your Boxer more frequently; for example, if the dog suffers from food or flea allergies, or if your dog likes to roll around in dirt. If your dog is an indoor dog or couch potato, however, the grooming procedures are quite minimal. Boxers are naturally clean animals who groom themselves with their cat-like licking skills. Step 1 Brush the Boxer with a rubber curry brush weekly to remove dead hair. Use in a circular motion and brush gently into the coat. The rubber nibs of the brush massage and stimulate the dog's skin and hair. Step 2 Wipe away any surface dirt with a soft cloth, or use commercially available pet wipes to remove more stubborn spots or dirt. Step 3 Bathe your Boxer as needed with a shampoo made especially for dogs. Don't use human shampoo and especially don't use liquid detergent, both of which dry the dog's skin and can strip the oils from their coat. Choose a warm summer day or simply slide your dog into the tub in a heated bathroom. Wet the coat thoroughly, and then apply shampoo, lather and rinse. Use fresh, clean, warm water, and then towel dry. Step 4 Gently wipe the leather side of the ear flap with a soft cloth to remove dirt. You can wrap a cloth around your finger to clean just inside the ear opening, but don't insert a cotton swab into the ear canal; you could perforate the ear drum. Step 5 Routinely check your Boxer for minor skin irritations while you are grooming them. Boxers are semi-prone to hot spots, also known as lick sores or acute moisture dermatitis. It is caused when the dog constantly licks a small irritation such as a mosquito or flea bite. The constant licking and biting at the irritation causes the skin to become moist and irritated. If you notice a small bite, pimple or scratch, keep an eye on it and tell your dog to stop if you notice they are biting or licking at the area. Consult a veterinarian if the area worsens. This will affect everything from how comfortable he is eating, to bacteria in the bowl and also has a direct impact on the risk of developing bloat an issue with this breed. Size, height, material and overall design all matter. Read more about the best food and water bowls for Boxers Bed or Mat Boxers love to take over the sofa, make claim to their human's favorite chair or stretch out on the floor. We recommend a 6 food leash or retractable for house training Boxer puppies. You'll want to keep him close to lead him to and keep him in the exact designated area and to have him close to give immediate praise and reward. A short leash is also best when training your Boxer to heel, since his proper positioning is to your left and right by your side. A longer leash, or one that can extend out, is great for allowing your Boxer to run and have some freedom, when deemed safe. In regard to a collar or harness, this breed typically has strong enough neck and shoulder muscles to do okay with a collar. However, if your Boxer tends to launch himself forward or off to the side quite often when on leash, play it safe and get him a harness. This will remove the issue of pressure being applied straight to the neck and instead it will be displaced on a Boxer's stronger shoulders, chest and back. An ID tag is a must. Though your Boxer can tend to stay close and you're on-point in regard to not letting him off leash, it's just not worth the risk. Choose a stainless steel tag that is weather resistant and will be durable enough that the engraving does not wear down. It's suggested to put more than one type of contact info for someone to return your Boxer cell, address, email. The Right Toys It's best to think of toys as tool. Which ones are going to perform to meet the needs of your Boxer puppy or dog? All toys should serve a specific function. If not, you mind as well toss them or your Boxer may already have figuratively done that by ignoring them. And most toys cannot meet all of a dog's needs at one time though some can have a duel purpose. The main reasons for certain toys include: Teething, chewing urges, entertainment to stay busy especially when home alone , and owner interaction. Read more about choosing the best toys for a Boxer Brushes Boxers have short, dense coats that will shed mostly into themselves, rather than leave a mess on the floor. This is great for your house, but not so much in terms of health for the coat itself. Though Boxers can enter shedding seasons depending on where you live , most still or entirely shed minor to moderate amounts throughout the year. You will want to routinely brush the coat from head to tail at least once per week. During times of heavier shed, use a tool specifically to pull out dead hairs. Brushing has several benefits: It pulls out hairs that have shed but fallen back. If these are left, they can block natural air flow. It distributes natural body oils It removes fine dirt and debris Is healthy for the hair follicles, leading to better re-growth fur is in a constant renewal cycle The best brushes for Boxer dogs: For the type of coat that a Boxer has, the best brush will be a quality bristle brush. Be sure that it has a sturdy handle, is sized well for your hand, and has proper tension it won't do much good if it simply glides over the surface. For times of shedding, when you need to pull out any dead hairs, use a grooming tool that reaches deep down, latches onto hairs and brings them up and out. Dental Care Items Of all the supplies you might possibly get for your Boxer puppy or dog, do not overlook dental care items. What can happen: Plaque builds up on a dog's teeth every second of the day and chewing on treats and toys even great dental treats just doesn't get it all off. Within 3 days, plaque starts to harden into tartar. It encases the teeth and travels under the gum line. It eats away at the enamel of the teeth, causing decay and rot. Infection can travel up into the sinuses or even throughout the body, causing sepsis. Decay causes teeth to loosen and eventually fall out. And of course, this all happens comes at the cost of quite a bit of pain for a dog. The American Veterinary Dental College reports that periodontal disease is the most common preventable clinical condition in both cats and dogs. Without proper care, most dogs have some level of periodontal disease by the age of 3 years old; at this stage, there are not enough signs of unknowing owners to take steps other than bad breath yet can lead to damage to internal organs. What to do: Take measure to ensure excellent oral hygiene with your Boxer dog. Brush your Boxer's teeth with a quality toothbrush. Use an appropriately sized, 3 sided brush. Use an effective toothpaste human paste is toxic, look for a canine product that tastes good and works well to remove plaque. Don't be surprised when a good paste does not foam; they are not meant to since dogs are supposed to swallow the product. Offer one effective dental treat each day. We highly recommend Greenies; these are simply the best and are an accepted product of the Veterinary Oral Health Council. Think about using a water supplement that works to kill bacteria and help prevent plaque. Be sure that it does not contain a drying agent and tasteless ones work best. Bathing, Coat Supplies Everything that you use on the coat shampoo, conditioner, spray will either be beneficial to a Boxer or detrimental. You will want to have a really good shampoo that not only cleans great, but does so with the right pH balance to avoid over-drying and without harsh chemicals. The conditioner that you use needs to coat hairs without being so oily that residue remains which can clog skin pores. The coat should be protected with a spritz. A leave-in spray offers some great benefits: It smells great, protects the coat from static, contact friction and outdoor elements particularly the sun. Though, even with dogs that are outside much of the day and are super active, you can't depend on this to keep the nails short enough. If you want to do this at home, we recommend an electronic filer. It's much easier than clipping. Nose - A dog's nose is naturally pretty vulnerable to all of the elements it encounters. From arid air to cold winds to sun exposure. A big mistake is to only put something on the nose once it starts to look really dry or start peeling, because while a good product can indeed heal a chapped or cracked nose, it's better to be ahead of the game and prevent it in the first place. Every month or so, apply a quality nose butter and then keep it on hand for when you need to apply it more often, which is typically in the dead of winter and in during long, hot summers. Paws - You don't want to baby the paws, because they toughen up as a puppy and then dog walks on a variety of surfaces. However, if they become damaged this puts you back several steps and can even morph into serious issues. This is why a quality paw wax should be part of the supplies you have for your Boxer, it's a vital part of year-round paw care. Look for a good wax that allows the paws to breath and is absorbed quickly in just a couple of minutes. Car Restraint or Seat If you'd buckle up your child, there should be no hesitation to buckle up your Boxer. To not do this is to risk his safety. There are over 16, car accidents per day in the U. No matter how good of a driver you are, you just can't guarantee that someone won't crash into you or that road or weather conditions won't cause something to happen. So, of all the possible supplies that you might get for your Boxer, this one can literally save lives. There are some great options that are easy to use, can actually help with motion sickness and are comfortable for a Boxer puppy or larger, older adult dog. Read more about finding the best car seat or belt for a Boxer dog. Basic First Aid Supplies There are a few basic essentials that every owner should have on hand in the case of injury or emergency. If you've ever looked into this, you may have found some pretty extensive lists; and that's a shame because you don't need half of those things. Chances are, you'll never find yourself searching through your supplies as you try to set broken bones; things like this should be saved for the animal hospital. However, dogs do commonly swallow things that they should not according to the Pet Poison Hotline of the ten top breeds that they received calls about, the Boxer places at 8. You should always be prepared for this. Also, there can be insect bites, something in the eye and small scraps and cuts. Read more about which first aid items you should have for a Boxer dog Outer Gear - Optional, Based on Needs Many Boxers do just fine without any sort of additional layers via jackets or coats. However, some don't. Puppies, senior dogs, or those that are ill or recovering may have an intolerance to the cold. Additionally, just about any otherwise healthy dog can need some help during super harsh weather. If your Boxer is having a hard time in the winter and this is interfering with meeting exercise requirements or is getting in the way of house training, you may want to check into this. If so, read more about clothing for Boxer dogs. Supplements - Optional, Based on Needs If you are feeding your Boxer a high quality food, vitamins and minerals are already added to the mix. However, if you are offering a mainly home cooked diet which is great , you have to be the one to add in a complete vitamin and mineral supplement. Reviews Dog lovers who are new to Boxers might think that the breed requires little shed maintenance to keep their coat in check, but, boy, would they be wrong. Boxers are year-round shedders, and if you are thinking of adding one to the family, be prepared to find some hair hanging around the house. Unlike many other breeds of dogs which shed primarily twice a year when the seasons shift, Boxers are constantly shaking off their loose, short hairs, making grooming a top priority for their owners. A Multipurpose Brush for Boxers Another great feature of the King Komb is that it can be used both dry and while shampooing your Boxer , and while massaging its coat with topical oils , which can be helpful when it comes to managing its shedding patterns. Everyone should buy this for there dog! My dog loves it! Thank you King Kanine! Arielle S. Best product ever. I have tried multiple brushes. This one does not pull there hair. They were all falling asleep while I was brushing them. But lord this was after 5 minutes. She is always shedding too. There isnt a day I have to vacuum or sweep because of her hair. But this did an amazing job and she was in love with it too. My smaller dog didnt need the blade side but the rubber side worked perfect on her without hurting or pulling to hard. Best decision ever by far! Monica U. This is the best thing ever invented. Michael H. My puppy loves this thing! It gets so much hair out and the retractable comb blades makes for easy clean-up! Holly The most amazing brush ever!! King Komb is a game changer! Fran W. This works really well I have chows, this works better than anything I have ever tried on them, truly a life saver. It gets out all the tuffs that it took me hours with a brush to get off in just minutes. If you have a dog with long hair this is an awesome product. The best money I have ever spent on a grooming product that delivers way more than advertised!! Kelly Amazing!!! My dogs love it and damn.Donald D. This is one item for every body that has a pet. Works good on German Shepherds Dianne G. I love this pet comb and use it for my cat. Nothing like it and my cat loves it too. I recommend to anyone who has dogs or cats. Thank you. Delisa H. Dan B. Works great Ruth W. She has two dogs. I am so happy I bought for her! Carol W. She loves it!! Works wonders on my german shepherd. Leea O. Love the product. Really gets a lot of hair out of my shedding lab and easy hair clean up. I have been recommending it to everyone. Chad S. Great product!! Christie F. Our GSD has allergies and a huge shedding problem. I bought a King Komb and used it for 3 days. Then we went on vacation and Eliska was boarded, which included a bath. The manager remarked that she pulled very little shed from her, and that "We must brush her often" After only 3 days? Pat R. Love it Works great on my Corgis Patti H. I love this product!! I have 2 German Shepherds and this works amazing Victoria P. Denise M. I absoulty love the king komb I have a husky and it has help with the amount of hair thats in our house! I highley recommend this product. Phil S. I use this brush on my Australian Sheperd and I literally could make another Aussie with the amount of hair that this comb pulls off. I wish the rubber side was more than 3 rows because I use that side most often and I have to clean it off every time I pull it through his hair. I would definitely buy another comb if it was only the undercoat brush. Joe G. As you see we have a German Shedder! This king Komb has been a lifesaver! We have bought many instruments as well as a furminator which Nitro our German Shedder does not like and we have to chase him while trying to use it. He is relaxed and enjoys being groomed. Will definitely buy another one if this one tears up. Thank you for making such a quality product! Carole G. I was really skeptical at first, I bought it because it had such good reviews! This is better than the furminator that we own. Our furbaby enjoys being brushed. I'm however inside and from the distance taking the photo as it is shedding season; not a fan of a mouth full of fur. Would purchase again for my parents who also own a crazy shedding german shepherd! Gary V. Wow this product is amazing. My husky Luna loves her brushes and this one is by far her and my favourite. Mary F. Buster loves his grooming!! Get loads of extra fur from him. Only downfall in hindsight is that I would have preferred a 'handle' on the brush as I have problem with my hands and buster would like a longer brush. Emily N. Bundy wasn't so fussed about being brushed and would only tolerate it for a short time. Now we have the King Komb he loves it! He rushes up to you when he sees it in your hand, and then lays down or rolls over so you can reach all the right spots. He will even give you a nudge to keep going when you stop. The look on his face tells me I made the right decision to buy one. Thank you King Kanine. Kyle R. Butter is my 1 shedder. She didn't like to be brushed but once I started using the King Komb she loves it. The hair pile on the right is after about 3 mins of brushing. Steve D. The only grooming tool acceptable to The Difficult Dog. Not cheap in Australia, unless it outlasts the dogs. Have already recommended it to friends and local Vets. Great design, congratulations! Gary H. I bought this for my mother, she has a Corgi, and 2 Swedish Vallhunds. After only 2 minutes with the comb, we got a large amount of hair from the both dogs coats. Very impressed! The comb is easy to use, and not too big for smaller hands to hold. Thankyou very much. Kati M. This comb is wonderful. I have an Australian shepherd and with the amount of hair that I get off this comb, I can make another Aussie!! I wish this comb was the all rubber side cause I use that side most often. Ryan S. The kingkomb is easy to use. It removes all the loose hair and is so easy to clean. We have noticed a massive reduction of dog hair on the floor of our home. Our dogs loce it too. Thanks Kingkomb. Jeff R. I Love using comb on my dog. It removes the dog hair easily. The design of the comb makes brushing easier. I can brush my dog much longer without my hand hurting. My dog is a mixed breed and she has a heavy coat. Using the Kingcomb works to remove her under coat easily. I took the comb to show my neighbor. She tried it on her golden retriever. She was amazed at how it worked. She ordered one too. This is the best comb I have ever used. Kenyon R. I was hesitant if it was going to work when I received it in the mail. I used it on my American eskimp who had a thick and double coat. I was surprised that it works however it is messy so I recommend using it outdoors since the hair flies everywhere. Doug S. Cosette loves grooming time with this brush! Works so much better and kinder than the stripping tool that we had been using previously. Easy to use and comfortable in my hand as well. Great product.Chad K. Fantastic, I have two big long hair German Shepherds, a Lab and a GS puppy, it takes the underhair out and frees me up from sweeping to much for a couple days!! Elliott A. I have a brush that I usually brush my German Shepherd's coat with. The same day that I had already brushed him, I used the King Komb and it really gathered more of my pups loose fur. It works!! Tricia S. Love it!!! Just love it! I tried a few combs. But this one is the best!!! Love this brush. We worked hard at first getting all the hair out but now it's gone! I have shared my brush with several people and they have bought there own! John V. This is literally 4 swipes down the back. I love this brush and the dogs look be the massaging action they get from the rubber nubs. I seldom have to use the sharper side. I am recommending this brush for all my fellow volunteers at Retrieving Freedom, where dogs are trained and matched with veterans and children with autism. Cindy M. Love the design. My dogs enjoy the massage they get along with a brushing. Brayden S. It's amazing for his undercoat. That's huge compared to all of the fuzz balls that used to be all over everything and now is virtually a non issue! Seth K. As u can see by the pic, We have a German Shepard he is part of the family and he can't come in, due to his hair lol, When spring comes he can cover our back patio with hair and it is hanging off of him, we haven't been able to find anything to help as much as the King we love it when we use it and will continue to do so thanks King Komb foe everything, and I am sure Duke thanks you as well lol. Matt D. When I ordered the Kingkomb I was a little skeptical but thought I would give it a try. When it arrived I immediately tried it out. I could not believe the amount of hair that I combed out of our dog!! I honestly thought I was doing a great job keeping Ladybug brushed. I was shocked! And she loves it! Teresa W. Have tried everything else on my very fuzzy long-haired cat. This works on her! Thank you! John D. I got a new friend, but his hair was driving me Crazy! Erik A. I love my King Komb so much. It is the only product that I will recommend for dog grooming period, especially for those with arthritis or limited energy to go through a coat rake, slicker brush and greyhound comb on their dogs, like the disabled with their service animals. I have always enjoyed dog grooming, I find it very soothing. This brush makes it even better. The ergonomic design, the fact that none of the coat is damaged, but it gets up so much of the dead undercoat, dander and dirt Sharon J. The King Comb was better than I expected. Super gentle in my dog but super effective as well! I think he actually enjoys it! Dawn K. The very best dog brush! I use the rubber side for her tummy and the other side for her back, she loves it Kay S. My dog seemed to like it better than his other one and it has the two together for fur an then for his bony areas Julie B. Cheryl S. Works great. Have two large dogs and one sheds all the time. The amount of fur I get off him daily is a lot less firm on my carpet! Kirby J. This brush is fabulous! I have finally seen a difference in my cavoodles coat who was shedding fur at an incredible rate. It is also the first brush to get rid of the fluffy fur across my cavaliers rump Judy H. Exactly as advertised. Melissa g. I used this on both my german shepherds, my cat and my barrel horse! I brushed my very large .I would definitely start advertising heavier towards the equestrian community because I bet other equestrians such as myself would love this brush! Amber R. The ergonomic design, the fact that none of the coat is damaged, but it gets up so much of the dead undercoat, dander and dirt from the skin. Most importantly, Aegon, my service dog, absolutely loves it. Irina K. Fiona H. I have two Pugs, and the shedder is excellent for getting the hair out. Chris C. Great grooming tool!! Lisa R. I love this Komb! My blue heeler I use it on.There is something about it that he won't stand still for while I'm brushing him. Regular brushes he has no problem with but they don't get to that third coat of fur on him! So I'm still continuing to use the King Komb even though he is not a fan because it is the only tool that gets that ridiculous undercoat fur off. Janice M. Great brush!!! The first potential health issue your Boxer might face with their fur is demodectic mange. Demodex mites are frequent residents in the fur of most breeds, and Boxers are no exception. When a Boxer puppy is born, they inherit the mite from their mother. Most of the times, these mites are perfectly harmless. However, if your Boxer has a weakened immune system, this stimulates the Demodex and can cause the condition called demodectic mange. Signs and symptoms of the condition include hair loss, skin with red scales, and fur loss in the mouth and eye region. Other symptoms include a fever, lowered appetite, and sores. Boxers are highly sensitive to food, so if they are allergic to something in their diet, you might notice a rash, scales, or patchy areas develop on their skin. Itchiness is another symptom of food allergies. A number of Boxers may be vulnerable to a non-cancerous tumor known as Histiocytoma that grows on the surface of the skin. White boxers are most susceptible to Histiocytoma. The tumor could blister but will not cause pain or discomfort to your Boxer if touched. If your Boxer has a Histiocytoma you can easily have it removed with lasers or let it run its course and dissolve on its own. Intestinal parasites: Here's something we never want, but it happens. Giardia or Coccidia can cause diarrhea. Giardia is a small parasite; kin to an ameba and this protozoan is not friendly. It's typically transmitted through water, in a puddle or other contaminated water. Even river or lake water on a hiking trip, and on rare occasions tap water can carry this parasite. This parasite causes gas and lots of diarrhea. Because the parasite runs in a cycle; it can seem to go away, and then come back, over and over again with almost IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome type symptoms. It has a treatment available by the veterinarian if your dog has contracted it. Coccidia, which also causes diarrhea in dogs, is a different parasite and has a different treatment than giardia. Canines can contract this parasite via contact with infected feces, or sometimes from their mother. That doesn't mean the breeder or shelter wasn't clean, just that coccidia is a sneaky and resilient parasite. Coccidia is often carried by birds and passes in their droppings onto lawns, parking lots, and other areas of the flyover. It's highly recommended to watch what your Boxer is doing. Don't let them eat feces, sniff or lick at it. Protect them from puddles and melting ice. A few other parasites that can cause diarrhea in puppies, or in some cases adult canines, are roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and threadworms. Ingesting something they are sensitive to: A canine's palate isn't the same as ours. Some dogs think that garbage, trash, decaying leaves, dead mice or birds, plants, and grasses are all things meant to be eaten. And, these can all upset the digestive system or be mildly to severely toxic. Infection and diseases: A lot of acute cases of diarrhea with dogs are caused by a minor bacterial infection that runs its course over a couple of days and then resolves. However, there are other more serious issues that can be at play. This includes: Campylobacteria, seen most often with young pups up to 6 months old. About half of all dogs carry this can be carriers that are healthy, but can pass this on. It's most often picked up when a dog eats the feces of another dog. While the top sign is diarrhea, there can also be straining during bowel movements, fever, vomiting, and enlarged lymph nodes. Inflammatory bowel disease which is catch-all term that is given if a dog has ongoing, chronic diarrhea linked to one of several conditions including allergies, parasites, lowered immune system, and some diseases including colitis. Diagnosing this includes blood testing, urinalysis, stool testing, and other tests. Antibiotics, corticosteroids, and medications to protect the lining of the intestines may be given. In many cases, a change to a different food which includes a switch in both protein and carb sources can help. Other less common but possible reasons for diarrhea include kidney disease, liver disease, cancer , lymphangiectasia, pancreatitis, and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Elements to Help Decipher Diarrhea Issues Color, smell, and consistency are all clues: Tarry, sticky black stools can point to upper GI bleeding and warrants an immediate vet visit. Red or red spotting in stools often points to bleeding in the lower GI tract. In those cases, the blood can be coming from small tears or rips in the anus. Yellow or green loose stools. With a puppy, yellow can point to coccidia. Otherwise, yellow or green indicates that food is passing through too quickly to digest completely. Gray can point to a liver-related issue. Foam seen in the diarrhea tends to point to a bacterial infection. Greasy diarrhea can mean the pancreas is having a problem. Give the stomach a break. If diarrhea is moderate to severe, you can withhold food for 24 hours. Do give supplements ; see below. Keep your Boxer hydrated. A lot of water is lost even with one episode of diarrhea. When the ability to drink fluids fast enough to compensate for the water loss is insufficient, dehydration can result. This is of particular concern for Boxer puppies and senior Boxer dogs, but is applicable to dogs of all ages. Try some organic chicken broth. After 12 to 24 hours, start your Boxer on a bland diet. This is typically just 1 protein and 1 starch. One of the most tolerated combinations is plain, white, skinless chicken breast diced small and plain white rice or plain oatmeal. However, lean beef and sweet potato are other good options. If you offer chicken, the broth from boiling the chicken is good for your Boxer to drink after it cools to a warm temperature. After 3 days, start to transition back to a regular diet or a new, better food if that was decided. By then, the body should be well-rested. Extra Tips What about Pepto Bismol? This is safe to give to most dogs. However, check with your vet. Some recommend not giving this, in order to allow the body to expel stools as it needs to. But, in some cases, if a dog, especially a puppy, is overwhelmingly stressed, and this can help control diarrhea to some degree. Do not give this to a Boxer that is pregnant or to any dog that is allergic to silicates. The typical dosing is 1 teaspoon for each 20 pounds. You can use this every 6 hours for up to 48 hours. Your vet may suggest a slightly stronger dose. Altering sleeping or living arrangements. When you have to go, you have to go, and your Boxer can't always get there in time. If that is happening to your Boxer puppy, pee pads placed over the floor of a pen or gated off area are a blessing. During this time avoid additional stress for your Boxer. At this time, Boxers don't need playtime with small children; it burns energy, and their reserves are low when dealing with diarrhea. Sore Rear-ends. Puppies and dogs can have red, irritated behinds from the change in acidity from diarrhea. They may lick their behind due to the irritation which only exacerbates the problem. This product is healing, disinfecting and completely safe to use. It doesn't hurt or sting. After cleaning the area with this product, organic coconut oil can be applied. It melts quickly and is a natural antibiotic, and it is very soothing. If you put it on first, then you can't use the Vetericyn afterward as the coconut oil also acts as a bit of a seal. Alternatively, you can cut open a Vitamin E gel tabs. The contents are liquid and slightly sticky. Apply the vitamin liquid to the irritated skin. If you don't see some improvement in 24 hours, broken skin around the anus may have developed an infection. The good news is that if you used Vetericyn, that risk is somewhat mitigated. Otherwise, you may need your vet to prescribe an antibacterial gel, sometimes an antibiotic shot, and occasionally a cone if you have a persistent licker. The reasons below account for nearly all instances of diarrhea. Boxers can get diarrhea from eating foul or rotten foods, a change of kibble, stress and anxiety, bacterial infections, parasites, heatstroke, medications, or underlying health issues. Digestive upset Digestive upset accounts for most bouts of diarrhea. Anything from eating rotten or foul food, toxic ingredients, or receiving table scraps can cause your Boxer to experience diarrhea. Anything you boxer eats outside of their regular diet can potentially cause diarrhea even regular dog treats. Switch of diet, kibbles, or treats If diarrhea shortly proceeds a change of diet, kibble, or treats, then you likely have your answer already. Any kind of transition must be done very slowly, otherwise, diarrhea is the likely result. By making a slow transition you reduce the chances of diarrhea happening unless it really is going to happen anyway. General stress can be caused by a wide range of things including a lack of exercise, mental stimulation, being left alone too long, or simply not receiving enough of your attention… Ultimately, any level of stress or anxiety can lead to a myriad of health issues, and believe it or not, diarrhea is one of them. This may help you pinpoint a potential cause of new stress 4. Parasites Intestinal parasites are another well-known cause of diarrhea, granted, this is much rarer than the causes given above. Intestinal parasites can happen if your boxer ingests an infected flea, or the eggs in contaminated soil or feces. If your boxer does in fact have parasites, you might notice visible worms or blood in the diarrhea. Additional symptoms include vomiting, a lack of appetite and energy, weight loss, abdominal pain, and discomfort. Bacterial infections Bacterial infections can happen relatively easily but are another less common cause of diarrhea overall. On a day-to-day basis, our boxers interact with many surfaces and items that are covered in bacteria. Everything from their own food bowls to toys, their own bed, and a plethora of unknown items while out on walks. Sometimes bacteria can develop and actually make your boxer sick if he interacts or ingest it. This usually results in obvious symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, appetite changes, and abdominal pain. Dehydration typically happens way before heatstroke, but both can happen quickly and unexpectedly. The problem with dehydration is that it can be both the cause and the result of diarrhea, which creates a nasty cycle. Because of this, dehydration must be avoided at all costs. We must also acknowledge the fact that diarrhea is a common symptom of a wide range of health issues. Popular read: What temperature is too cold for a boxer? If diarrhea is accompanied by additional symptoms, or your boxer is a puppy or senior, then you should consult with your veterinarian right away. In most cases, these will be the exact same steps your veterinarian will suggest. Short fast 24 hours Most vets will recommend withholding food for 24 hours to allow the stomach and digestive system to rest and recover. Please note that this is only suitable for healthy adults years. Puppies, seniors, or those with underlying health issues should not fast. Fasting allows the system to recover quickly and effectively. This is the ideal step before moving on to a bland food diet. Bland food diet Fasting should be done first by all those that qualify. If your boxer cannot fast, then the first step will be to follow a bland food diet. The bland food diet consists of plain boiled chicken breast with plain boiled white rice. This kind of diet works well as it continues to provide essential nutrients without stressing the digestive system. The usual plan of action is to provide 3 small meals of this per day. Most vets will recommend continuing with this diet until diarrhea stops. After, slowly reintroduce their old diet. Probiotics can be given alongside bland food diets and will help restore balance and strength in the stomach. As diarrhea is mostly gut-related, probiotics usually help a lot. Always check which kind of probiotics you are buying and if in doubt, ask your veterinarian for a recommended brand. Medication Antidiarrheal medication will likely be prescribed if your boxer is struggling to overcome diarrhea with the methods above. In some cases, depending on the health of your boxer, a veterinarian might resort to antidiarrheal medication right away. Pro-Pectalin is an antidiarrheal medication that you can often buy over the counter. Thank you for reading! December 22, by Jordan Seals Boxer dogs are a high-energy breed that need a lot of exercise. This means they also tend to have higher than average appetites and may need to poop more frequently than other breeds. A good rule of thumb is that a boxer should poop at least once a day, but twice a day is not uncommon. The average amount of time a dog poops per day ranges from one to three hours, depending on the breed. Boxer dogs poop for an average of two hours after eating a meal. Constipation in dogs can be a sign of underlying health issues such as allergies, bladder issues, liver problems, or hormonal imbalances. If your dog has been constipated for a long time, you should make sure he or she gets the necessary treatment. It may be difficult for your dog to recover from diarrhea, which is why it is the most difficult part of treating it. Diarrhea in Boxer Dogs and Puppy Perches can both be caused by the same cause. It is critical to consult with your veterinarian about the type of dog food that is best for your pet. Canned foods are now reasonably priced, and a wide range of options are available. You should always keep your dog in mind when giving him treatment. Higher health is desirable on the upper end of this range, but not overly so. Every dog is a unique animal. Despite this, the majority of the internet believes that one to five poops per day are both normal and healthy. As long as your dog sticks to a consistent schedule, you can be confident that they will be fine, regardless of whether they are a pooping machine or a delicate once-a- day pooper. They may poop more as a result of eating too much, or eating food that does not meet their nutritional requirements. Any diet change can result in an additional amount of pooping as the body adjusts. Adult and senior Boxers should be fed at least twice daily. These dogs may even enjoy eating only one meal per day at times. Boxer puppies can be fed four times per day, but they can only eat four times per day. Credit: dogsaremyuniverse. Dogs frequently poop around half an hour after eating or shortly after waking up. If you feed your dog two meals per day, they may defecate twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Most adult dogs, according to veterinarians, respond to a bowel movement every day. If your dog has a healthy diet, an active lifestyle, and a clean yard, poop frequency should be predictable. Constipation in dogs can be caused by a variety of factors, some of which are benign and others of which are life threatening. Other factors can contribute to anal gland problems, such as inadequate hydration or fiber in the diet, taking medications, being stressed, or being physically inactive. If your dog has not pooped for more than 48 hours or appears uncomfortable, lethargic, or lacking in appetite, you should consult a veterinarian. Kibble, like a diet, is ultra-processed — and ultra-dry. Fresh, whole foods are high in fiber and rich in natural moisture due to the presence of meat and vegetables. When potty training your puppy, keep in mind a few important points. Make certain that they have a routine that they stick to. They should be fed at the same time each day, taken outside at the same time, and potty trained at the same time. You should be patient, and the second rule is to be patient. Puppy learning may be difficult to sustain for an adult dog, but they are eager to learn. Finally, make sure to reward your puppy when he or she is potty trained outside. By doing so, they will be more likely to believe in potty training and will be able to complete it more quickly. Credit: www. However, if your dog poops more than that, you should not be concerned. It is normal for your dog to have solid, even stool, which does not contain blood, if it is solid, consistent, and smells pleasant. Romeo has been with his owner for over seven years. Canidae Large Breed Puppy food is our primary source of nutrition. It usually occurs when he wakes up in the morning and poops twice on our walk outside. Juno usually produces an extra one when we visit the dog park, and when we go to the dog park, he becomes overly excited. As a new owner of Kisaq, I was perplexed because he only poops twice a day. ToTW is consumed several times a day, with his daily intake totaling 5 cups. The poops of Buddy, on the other hand, were much larger than those of his owner. I believe that excitement will be more prevalent. He may have to adjust to it a little before he can grow out of it. If you switch to a high-quality adult food without fillers, you will be able to eat less poop. When he was younger, Thor pooped twice on every walk, but as he grew older, he only pooped once. At seven months, it makes sense not to feed your puppy any more puppy food. Puppy foods are available at any stage of life and are all of the best. Puppy food can cause them to grow too quickly, so do not feed it to them. There are a few reasons why your boxer may be pooping a lot. One reason could be that they are simply a very active dog breed and are burning a lot of energy. This means they need to consume more food, which can lead to more frequent bowel movements. Another reason could be that your boxer is experiencing some sort of gastrointestinal issue such as an infection or allergies. It can be difficult to tell if your dog is pooping excessively. The most important things to keep an eye on in a dog is his or her bathroom habits, because what is normal for a dog differs from what it is normally used to. It is critical that dogs release their bowels at least once per day. If they are not adhering to this, consult with your veterinarian. When a dog poop is picked up, it should be compact, moist, and hold its shape. Something has gotten into their digestive system and upset it, which could be the cause of poop that stinks and is watery. If their feces are dry or hard, they may be dehydrated or constipated. If your dog is eating too much, you may also need to poop in excess. This is a list of the best foods for sensitive stomachs in dogs. Dogs and humans can become ill from bacteria, which can cause cramps, diarrhea, intestinal upsets, and kidney disorders. The first step is to determine whether your dog is suffering from stress, and what type of diet and exercise they should be on. If your dog poops a lot, it will be best if you use environmentally friendly bags for scooping and disposing of the poop. Excessive pooping can also be a sign of environmental change, which occurs when a dog is reintroduced to new surroundings. The amount of poop produced by a dog varies greatly, with some producing as much as three times as much per day and others producing as little as twice as much. It should be moist, compact, and hold its shape when picked up, and should be a darker color than milk chocolate. If your dog has diarrhea, you should look for bloody poop, while if he has constipation, you should look for hard poop. Some large dogs produce large piles of poop, whereas small dogs produce few piles. You should begin by determining what is normal for your dog, and then track its progress over time. How Often Should A Dog Poop Dogs poop on average once a day, though some may poop more than two or three times per day. In contrast, puppies may require more frequent trips — sometimes as many as five times per day or more. The average adult dog poops once daily; for some dogs, this can be as many as three times per day. In contrast, the puppy may require a significant amount of time to travel. If your dog starts pooping three or four times per day, it could be an indication that something is wrong with him. Constipated dogs may be experiencing increased stress in the stool as a result of regularly straining to poop but not producing stool. Dogs require their pee and poop to function properly. Their bodies are obligate carnivores, which means they are designed to digest and use meat as their primary source of energy. Many people consider their dog their best friend, which is understandable, but it is also understandable for them to want to make the animal happy and comfortable. If they want their dog to remain healthy and happy, they must first understand his or her needs and give him or her the appropriate amount of attention. A mild dog shampoo should be used on a regular basis to bathe your boxer every few months. If you bathe more frequently, you may develop dry skin and itching. Keeping your dog clean can also help keep him healthy. It would be best to bathe your boxer every three to six weeks if he is only a teenager. If your dog runs through mud puddles throughout the day and plays all day, you should bathe him before going to bed. Many dog shampoos are available on the market. When bathing your dog, make it a fun time so he or she does not become frightened of the water. Boxers, like bathing, do not require regular brushing. If your dog feels cold, you may need to use a blower or a hairdryer to dry him thoroughly. A firm stroke motion encourages lymph drainage. Boxer Dog Poop When it comes to boxer dog poop, there are a few things you should know. For starters, boxer dog poop is usually firm and dry. Additionally, it is usually brown in color. Finally, boxer dog poop typically does not have a strong odor. It is difficult for dog owners and puppy owners to accept the word diarrhea. As a result, the animal may experience a lot of discomfort and become dehydrated, raising the risk of a life-threatening illness. It is common for dogs to become dehydrated during this time, and it is important to provide hydration. Dogs can become ill as a result of Giardia and Coccidia, which can cause diarrhea. Coccidia are carried by birds and frequently end up in lawns, parking lots, and other areas of the flyover where they can be seen dropping their feces. Diarrhea can be diagnosed by a number of tests, including blood tests, urinalysis, stool tests, and others. Taking antibiotics and corticosteroids to protect the intestines lining could be a good option. Diarrhea of moderate to severe severity can result in a hour food embargo. It is recommended that your Boxer be fed a bland diet consisting of 1 protein and 1 starch for 12 to 24 hours. It can be used up to 48 hours after purchase. Your veterinarian may recommend a higher dose in some cases. You must stop walking or exercising for at least a week to allow the vet to give you the all clear. Dogs and puppies may experience red, irritated behinds when diarrhea changes acidity, as well as diarrhea symptoms.

It's like adding a new member to your family, a little brother or sister. All French Bulldog Insights French Bulldog Breed Info If you're seeking an adorable companion with a charmingly squashed face, an easygoing personality, and a distinct penchant for lounging on the couch, the French Bulldog could just be your perfect match. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. The intentions were to breed a miniature version of the English Bulldog. French Bulldogs have climbed the charts in the dog world and were recently recognized as the second-most popular registered dog in the United Kingdom, and the fourth-most popular AKC-registered dog breed in the United States. French Bulldogs are non-aggressive dogs who like to stay near their owner. They enjoy one on one time and will quickly show their loyalty. They have very stable personalities and easy-going demeanors. They do exceptionally well with children and other animals inside of the home. Although they do enjoy outdoor play time, they are just as happy resting alongside their family on the couch. There are not many dog breeds as loyal and caring as the French Bulldog. The French Bulldog can be found to have a single-layer coat or a double-layer coat. The most common colors on a French Bulldog are white, cream, black, and fawn. They have short and easy-to-care-for hair which generally does not tangle or knot. A daily brushing will help keep his coat clean and neat looking. A bi-weekly bath and routine nail clipping are also a great way to allow him to look and feel his best. French Bulldogs do best with set feeding times. Typically, two feedings twelve hours apart are what make this breed happy. The first six months of their life is an important stage for their physical and mental development, which is why proper nutrition through high-quality dog food is so important. The French Bulldog generally stands ten to twelve inches tall. They weigh between twenty and thirty pounds. This breed has an average life expectancy of ten to fifteen years. Fact: This pup loves to play, but extra caution should be taken when he is around water. They do enjoy swimming but do not swim well. Fact: The French Bulldog was created to be a toy-size version of the Bulldog. Although spaying or neutering is not compulsory, it is highly advisable to spay your French Bulldog. This will help to decrease its chances of getting certain kinds of cancer. It also prevents the risk of unwanted breeding between your French Bulldog and any nearby dog. Are French Bulldogs Aggressive? French Bulldogs have the potential to be aggressive. However, they are not usually aggressive unless they are trained that way. It is important to note that they may show aggression towards other dogs or smaller animals. Owners should watch out for signs of aggression and nip them in the bud. What is the life expectancy of a French Bulldog? With a proper diet and nutrition, French Bulldogs can live for up to eleven or thirteen years. Can French Bulldogs eat raw meat? French Bulldogs can eat raw meat such as chicken, liver or kidney. They could also eat canned, dry food. What is the difference between a French Bulldog and an English Bulldog? French Bulldogs and English Bulldogs are quite similar but different at the same time. English bulldogs are bigger while the French Bulldog is considerably smaller. French Bulldogs also have upright pointy ears whereas the English breed has folded ears. Do I have to worry about fleas with French Bulldogs? Just like all other breeds, French Bulldogs can get fleas. If they do get fleas, this can be solved by getting flea medicine or using a flea comb to get rid of the fleas. How do you deal with separation anxiety in French Bulldogs? French Bulldogs are very prone to separation anxiety. To curb this, owners can crate train their dogs or provide them with chew toys. What is the best way to train your French Bulldog? Crate training is one of the best ways to train your French Bulldog. It helps to create good and positive behavior in your Frenchie and could be a fun place for it to rest. Are French Bulldogs children-friendly? French Bulldogs are not the best option for kids. However, if they grow up surrounded by children, the risk could be lessened. They should not be left unsupervised around kids. How big are French Bulldogs? The French Bulldog is about 11 or 12 inches tall and weighs an average of pounds. Are you interested in purchasing a French Bulldog? Having had many animals over the years, someone probably grumpy, maybe dad declared that there would be no more animals in the house. We had a barn, a yard and even some woods. There was plenty of room outside for all the animals anyone could need without having one stink up the house. That all changed when we got our Australian Labradoodles. If we wait too long between baths they will eventually smell like grass, which is where they spend most of their time in the summer. Otherwise you can walk into our house and not know we have dogs unless you see them. Or hear them. When you come visit, they'll say hi. Pugs are often considered expensive due to a combination of factors, including their popularity, demand, and the costs associated with breeding and raising them. Here are some reasons why pugs may have a higher price tag: Breeding challenges: Pugs have a unique physical structure with a short snout, which can lead to health issues. Breeding pugs requires careful selection to minimize these problems, which can increase the cost of obtaining healthy and well-bred puppies. Health concerns: Pugs are prone to several health conditions, such as respiratory problems, eye issues, and skin allergies. Responsible breeders undertake health testing and provide necessary veterinary care, which contributes to the overall cost. Limited availability: While Pugs are a popular breed, finding a reputable breeder can be challenging. Responsible breeders may have a limited number of litters each year, which increases demand and drives up prices. Popularity: Pugs have gained significant popularity over the years due to their charming appearance and friendly temperament. Increased demand for Pugs can drive prices up, as breeders can charge more when there is high demand for a particular breed. Breeding expenses: Responsible breeders invest a considerable amount of time, effort, and money into breeding and raising their puppies. This includes expenses such as health checks, vaccinations, proper nutrition, and socialization. These costs are passed on to potential buyers. So just be ready for more than the price of a puppy — unexpected vet bills, food , treats, toys, etc. This is pretty much the same price as a Pug from any reputable breeder, as you would expect to get a purebred Pug from a reputable breeder. Female Pug: Which Is Better? The initial cost of a puppy alone will set you back at least a few hundred dollars. But why are they so expensive? There is no one factor that directly determines how much a Pug puppy will cost. There are multiple factors often working hand in hand. Getting some background knowledge in these things will give you a better grasp on what makes Pug puppies so expensive and where your money is going. This will also help you figure out the right Pug that fits within your budget. Here are some of the major factors affecting Pug prices: Age: As a rule of thumb, puppies typically cost more than adult dogs. This is no different when it comes to Pugs. Pug puppies are typically more expensive as the process of breeding can cost the breeders a lot of money. From health screenings to vitamins and sometimes even c-sections, it takes a lot of money to keep the mama dog happy. Appearance: Although there are only two registered Pug colors in the American Kennel Club, Pugs can often be seen in a wide assortment of shades. Rarer brindle coats tend to fetch a higher price than solid colored pups, and fawn or apricot Pugs with a black mask are also experiencing a rise in cost. A Pug from a reputable breeder, although expensive, will have perfect health, a good temperament, and no pre-existing medical conditions such as PDE or Pug dog encephalitis. A lot of reputable breeders also breed dogs from champion bloodlines, which ensures that the Pugs will inherit the best traits from their parents. A Pug with a superior lineage will cost significantly more than a regular Pug. Health Screenings: A vast majority of Pug breeders usually screen their puppies for pre-existing health issues before selling them. Healthy puppies with no signs of underlying medical issues will usually have a heftier price tag than others and will save you vet expenses in the long run. Training Received: Although Pugs are good family dogs, they can be quite stubborn and challenging to train. So if a Pug breeder trains their puppies before selling them, expect the price to be relatively higher than usual. Bringing home trained puppies is always worth it, though, as it saves you time and effort. These are just some of the most significant things that affect the price of a Pug dog. Of course, this list is by no means complete. Rescues generally have a lower price tag for their Pugs. What makes the deal even more ideal is that most shelter dogs have already been fully vaccinated. Additionally, many of them have already been dewormed, spayed or neutered, or even microchipped in some cases. Here are some of the initial expenses for your Pug puppy: Food and Treats: Deciding between wet or dry food is crucial in the first few days that your Pug dog comes home. If your Pug is a picky eater, you may need to try out different brands and flavors to see which one your pup likes best. This also applies to doggy treats. Ultimately though, stainless steel bowls will withstand more wear and tear. Crate: For first-time dog owners, a crate is one of the most important things to invest in. Crate training your pup is important, as it introduces them to a safe space when they feel overstimulated or unsafe. It also helps transport your Pug dog to places like the vet or during car rides. Leashes and Collars: As soon as you bring your new dog home, it is important that you get them acquainted with a leash and collar. Some dogs take a while to get adjusted to wearing harnesses, so starting pups with a collar while getting them used to daily walks is optimal. Toys: Pugs often have a reputation for being lazy, sleepy dogs, but this is not the case at all. A well-stimulated, happy Pug will be playful and alert rather than spend most of its time sleeping. Enrichment objects such as chew toys and puzzle toys are sure to keep your puppy busy and your slippers and charging cables safe from bites. Grooming Essentials: Although they have short fur, Pugs are double-coated. This means that they shed more than other short-haired dogs. Deworming, Flea, and Tick Medications: A lot of Pug breeders typically cover deworming, flea, and tick prevention before selling their puppy. Initial Vaccine Shots: Before a Pug puppy turns one year old, they need to complete their first set of vaccine shots. The usual shots most dogs need are for distemper, parainfluenza, rabies, parvovirus DHPP , and hepatitis. Neutering or Spaying: If you have no plans of breeding your Pug, it may be good to consider neutering or spaying them. If done at the right age, getting your dog fixed will help prevent the risk of some cancers and uterine infections. Dog License: While it may seem unnecessary at first, licensing your dog is a great way to have a permanent formal record of your ownership. This is especially helpful if your dog gets lost. Licensing also lets people know if your dog is up to date on its rabies vaccinations. A microchip will come in handy if ever you lose your pooch. It does not, however, work as a GPS tracker. If your lost puppy gets taken to a shelter or a clinic, they can easily scan the chip and contact you immediately. These include vitamins , pet-safe wipes, poop bags, and a poop scooper. A few toys should do the trick, but make sure to provide them with at least a few puzzle toys to get their brains working. Pugs thrive on attention and most are happy with an hour or so of playtime in the yard, two walks per day, and an occasional trip to the park to socialize with other dogs. Training your Pug beyond basic obedience training is a great way to bond with them and provide mental stimulation. Pugs are eager to please and attentive to their owners, so teaching them tricks or training them in agility are excellent ways to occupy their minds and enhance your relationship. Pugs only eat about pounds of food per year and are mostly healthy, although setting aside extra cash to deal with emergencies is a good idea. Food, medication, and pet insurance—if you purchase it—will be the highest regular costs, but occasional vet visits and extra medication for potential eye problems could become significant outlays as well. Additional Costs to Factor In Most Pug owners have success training their dogs themselves, but some people still opt for professional training. Dog sitting is another additional cost that only applies to some people. Before you purchase your new buddy, make sure you can budget enough money per month to cover food and medication costs. It is also a good idea to have money set aside to cover unexpected medical expenses. Training games, obedience training, and makeshift agility courses are excellent inexpensive ways to keep your Pug happy and make for some great owner-dog bonding time. Your upfront costs could be significantly reduced if you adopt a dog from a local shelter. The main drivers are food, medications like heartworm and flea and tick prevention, and pet insurance. You might also like:. Less - Square-proportioned, compact and of a cobby build, the pug is a large dog in a little space. Its gait is strong and jaunty, but with a slight roll of the hindquarters. Its distinctive expression is soft and solicitous. Its forehead has large, deep wrinkles. Its coat is fine, smooth and short. The Pug breed is often described by the Latin phrase multum in parvo, or "much in little" or "a lot of dog in a small space", alluding to the Pug's remarkable and charming personality, despite its small size. Pugs are strong willed but rarely aggressive, and are suitable for families with children. The majority of the breed is very fond of children and sturdy enough to properly play with them. Depending on their owner's mood, they can be quiet and docile but also vivacious and teasing. Pugs tend to be intuitive and sensitive to the moods of their owners and are usually eager to please them. Pugs tend to have a somewhat lazy nature and spend a lot of time napping. They are often called "shadows" because they follow their owners around and like to stay close to the action, craving attention and affection from their owners. History There are various theories regarding the origin of the Pug breed, but the most generally accepted is that they originated in the Orient, and are a smooth-coated, longer-legged type of Pekingese. They have been well known in Europe since at least the 16th Century. After gaining favor with Royalty, the breed became very popular and even more well known. The AKC recognized the Pug in .Pin it to remember the Price of Pugs Why are Pugs so expensive? So just why are Pugs so expensive? One reason is because Pugs, like most other Brachycephalic dogs with flat faces and large heads , are most often born via cesarean section. Pugs are also susceptible to numerous orthopedic and hereditary diseases—so reputable breeders will conduct testing on both parents to help ensure a healthy litter. This test screens for Hip Dysplasia and Patellar Luxation. Breeders also have the option to test for Elbow Dysplasia with this screening. This important test screens for Necrotizing meningoencephalitis NME , a fatal brain disorder that can kill Pug puppies. This metabolic disease breaks down the red blood cells of a young Pug. The price will depend on several factors: The location of the breeder. The rules of supply and demand pertain to dogs as well so larger metropolitan areas are often more expensive. The pedigree of the parent Pugs. Pugs that have participated in sanctioned competitions have more expensive litters. Whether the Pug is a show quality dog or a pet quality dog. Show quality puppies with a future in competitive dog shows and breeding are more expensive. The age of the Pug. Puppies are definitely more expensive; you may occasionally find a breeder selling a retired breeding Pug or a Pug that originated at the breeder but has been returned. The color of the Pug. AKC recognized two colors : black and fawn. The Canadian Kennel Club recognizes fawn, silver fawn and black. The Federation Cynologique Internationale and the Kennel Club of the UK both recognize silver sometimes called silver-fawn , apricot often called apricot-fawn , fawn and black. The less common the color, the more expensive the dog. Attend a sanctioned dog show and talk with Pug breeders and competitors for recommendations. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations regarding reputable breeders. Do an online search for complaints. Check the Facebook page of the breeder and read through comments. Remember, however, comments can be deleted by the page owner. When you find a breeder and want to determine if they are reputable: Ask for references. The breeder should be happy to share the name and contact information for customers. Ask questions. Lots of questions. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings. Ask how often the dogs are bred. Ask to tour the kennels. Are they well maintained? Do the dogs look healthy? Beware of operations that will not let you tour the kennels and breeders that want to meet you in a parking lot to hand over the puppy. Be prepared for questions. The breeder should ask YOU questions as well; be suspicious if the breeder has no questions about your past history with pets, your living situation, etc. Ask if the breeder will take the Pug back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. Pug breeders may adopt out of the area but, nonetheless, you will want to go to the breeder to meet the parents, view the kennels and bring home your puppy in person. This will add to your expenses—but breeders that transport a puppy by air are putting the dog at risk. If you want to buy a Pug online, please think again. There are numerous scams; people spend thousands of dollars for a dog and never receive a puppy. AKC warns potential pet parents to be wary of any seller asking for payment by Venmo, in gift cards or as a wire transfer. Dogs purchased from puppy mills can mean years of heartache and expensive veterinary care. The pros of purchasing from a Pug breeder: You may be able to select a puppy—including a choice of color and gender. A reputable breeder will be passionate about Pugs and will a resource for years to come. The cons of purchasing from a Pug breeder You will pay more for a Pug from a breeder than a rescue or shelter. If you find a breeder who has Pug puppies for sale at prices far lower than you are seeing from other breeders, you must suspect you are dealing with a backyard breeder who has not done health screening, with an online seller who is operating a puppy mill or is running a scam. You will need to wait until puppies are available. You will need to do your own due diligence to select a reputable breeder. Pugs in rescues are far less expensive that those at a breeder. Pugs under a year old will be the most costly. The dogs that are up for adoption at Pug rescues may be there for a variety of reasons: Death of an owner. Lost Pugs that the rescue had seen on shelter websites. Pugs a breeder no longer wanted. Whatever the reason, the Pugs in rescue may or may not come with papers, depending on whether or not the dog was surrendered with papers. You may also find Pug rescues at pet expos and special events in your area. Rescues will often have a booth with information on the rescue and a few adoptable dogs. Most dogs at purebred rescues are pulled from shelters, often open-intake shelters that may not be no-kill shelters. You will be able to adopt a Pug for far less money than purchasing a Pug from a breeder. You will be able to talk with people who are passionate about Pugs about the individual Pug you are interested in adopting. Our most recent search brought up a healthy, 7-month-old Pug puppy so you never know. Your dog may or may not be a purebred Pug and may or may not have papers. The least expensive option when it comes to Pug prices is the shelter, either a municipal shelter or a privately-operated shelter. Are you a senior? A member of the military or law enforcement? Many shelters offer special discounts. To locate a Pug at a shelter, call your local shelter or start your search online. Click on the link of adoptable Pugs in the top left corner; you can then enter your zip code to see Pugs near you. The listings will include both rescues and shelters. Unlike adopting from a Pug rescue, dogs at a shelter will generally be housed at the shelter although an increasing number utilize foster homes whenever they can, especially for puppies. If the dog is housed at the shelter, you may not know a lot about his or her personality. Talk with the shelter staff and ask if the dog has been temperament tested and if they can tell you if the dog is skittish, shy, outgoing, has any prior training, etc. And while you may see dogs listed as a Pug at a shelter, that may or may not mean they are Pugs, purebred or mixed. Shelters use their best judgement, often while intaking many dogs, so sometimes the accuracy of the breed is questionable. Since Pugs do have such a distinctive look, however, you can use your judgement to see if the dog displays usual Pug characteristics and markings. Ask the shelter if they have any background on the dogs; you may be surprised to find a puppy whose purebred mother came in as a pregnant lost dog and gave birth at the shelter. It definitely happens. The Pros of Adopting a Pug from a Shelter You are saving a life, not only of the dog you adopt but of the next dog who will be rescued due to the kennel that is now clear. Your new dog will have received a long list of veterinary services. You will have the love of a dog whose price was far less than that of a dog from a breeder. You may not know the history of the dog. FAQ What is the cheapest price for a Pug? If you find low-cost purebred Pugs listed online, please consider that you may be supporting a puppy mill. What is the Teacup Pug price? These dogs are the result of breeding the smallest runt dog of one litter to the smallest dog of another litter, producing smaller than usual Pugs—and selling them for sometimes twice as much as a traditional Pug. As you might expect, this can mean additional health problems for the puppies. Are Pugs expensive to own? While their small size means Pugs are not as expensive to own as larger breeds, due to the potential health issues discussed above they can be expensive in terms of veterinary care. Pet insurance is a good investment to help cover vet issues as they arise. Pin it to remember the Price of Pugs Posted on Last updated:. Show a Lab to water and it will retrieve all day: balls, sticks, small boats and even children who might happen to go for a swim. Descended from dogs found in Newfoundland by explorers, fishermen and settlers, the Labrador Retriever evolved by natural selection. An excellent retriever of fish and game, these dogs have been known by several names, among them the Black Water Dog, the Lesser Newfoundland and the St. John's Dog. In the early s, the breed was introduced to Britain, where it was eventually crossed with other sporting breeds. The final product was the strong, sturdy, happy Labrador Retriever, which is America's most popular dog, thanks to its outgoing, eager-to-please and loving temperament. Males usually measure .Weight for males ranges from 65 to 80 pounds, with females averaging about 10 pounds less. The coat is short, dense and hard in colors of black, yellow, silver, charcoal, chocolate and many shades in the middle such as the white and champagne Lab. The AKC only allows black, chocolate and yellow to place in the show ring but that doesn't stop us from loving the other colors! A simple good brushing will remove dead hair and keep the coat shiny. A distinctive feature of the breed is the medium-long tail. Thick and round at the root and gradually tapering to the tip, it is often described as an otter tail. This tail can clear a coffee table in seconds! The Labrador is easy to train and excels as a field dog as well as obedience trials. Labs enjoy all outdoor exercise but are especially fond of swimming. They say this medium-sized, high-energy dog is best suited to a suburban or country home with a yard and a family that can provide it with the activity it loves--but that said, many city-dwelling Lab owners tell us it is the most wonderful "city" dog they have ever had! City, country or anywhere in between, the Lab is simply the best! Labrador Retriever Puppies for Sale in California Many people would agree that a house is not truly a home until you have a dog. She is healthy and happy and loves to cuddle with her foster dog brothers and her human foster sister. She brings life and laughter into every room she walks into. She loves car rides and outings. She really, truly is a great girl. Like all puppies, Koumori is one part naughty, two parts lively, and twenty parts adorable. In true puppy fashion, Koumori is also a mouthy little thing—she will chew on fingers and the occasional electric cord if left to her own devices. Fortunately, this unwanted behavior can be successfully redirected to a toy. Indeed, Koumori loves her toys, and is particularly fond of her stuffed baby dragon. She can often be seen proudly carrying it down the hall, stopping on occasion to give it a good shake and a little what-for. Unleashed, she gets along famously with cats and dogs alike—she even lets the neighborhood kitty rub up against her! On-leash, however, Koumori becomes loud and pushy er, pull-y when she sees other animals. In any event, until Koumori makes some progress on this front, she is not a good candidate for the office, and care must be taken when she goes out for her daily walks. She'd be lots of fun in an obedience class, and that's a great way to bond with your dog! Koumori is making great progress with her housetraining, but she must be kept on a strict schedule until she masters the art of going potty outside. A person who works during the day would need to have a dog-walker or be able to come home at lunchtime. Applicants should be prepared for some housebreaking reversion until Koumori is used to your schedule and the new home. She adores people of all shapes and sizes, although she is particularly drawn to men. However, since Koumori is still learning that hands are not for nibbling, it is important that any children in her home are dog savvy and able to give her a toy if things get a little mouthy. If children come over, Koumori should be crated until her nibbling habit is broken. Koumori is in excellent health, albeit with some dry skin and dandruff. This condition has gotten better since she started eating a grain-free diet, and should continue to improve so long as she is given quality, grain-free food. Since she is a short, stout little nugget, Koumori is not a big fan of staircases, and would prefer not to navigate more than a few stairs at a time although she can also be scooped up and carried by grownups. First-time Frenchie owners would suit her just fine, although they must be willing to continue her training and not let her adorable self get away with things as tempting as it may be! If so, click on the link above to apply for Koumori. Be prepared to rev up the Batmobile for an East Coast road trip, as Koumori is having a wild rumpus in eastern North Carolina and will not be shipped. FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo. Except in rare or unusual cases, adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family. In rare or unusual cases, FBRN may be able to assist in transporting a dog to a volunteer near the adopter's home, but the expense of transporting the dog must be the responsibility of the adopting party. FBRN dogs are in foster care in people's private homes. For the foster families' safety, we do not disclose specific locations, and we don't set up meet and greets prior to applications. Their application is very thorough and long, so make sure you fill it out completely. You can find their adoption application here.

german shepherd puppies for sale ireland - Many a dog owner has played with their pup until they themself were exhausted and, much to their chagrin, their pup was still raring for more. As puppies, this can be the same for English Bulldogs but, as a brachycephalic breed, they do have their limits. This especially goes for activities like running and jogging. Similar to all breeds of dogs, English bulldogs need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. When it comes to running and jogging, however, they do have their limits due to several factors. Yes, they can run, or jog, by your side, but for very short distances and under the right circumstances. They are also prone to joint problems, especially their knees and hips, and running or jogging puts a lot more pressure on these joints and can hurt them even under normal conditions. Most English bulldog experts agree that they should only be allowed to run around for 30 to 40 minutes, and less on a hot, humid day. More than this and you risk that they will dangerously overheat, have difficulty catching their breath and cause damage to their joints, including their hips and knees. There are exceptions to the rule, of course. If your English bullie buddy is a fully-grown adult with minimum health problems and the temperature outside is moderate they may be able to run around a bit longer without any risks. This would be something that you, as their dutiful and loving owner, would need to evaluate and decide on your own. This is a question that must be answered on an individual basis. That being said, 30 to 40 minutes is the advised amount of time to exercise your furry buddy so, for example, if you want to take them on a short jog or run at a moderate to slow speed simply make sure that you go as far as will get you back to your home in 30 to 40 minutes. Weather is also a factor when running or jogging with your English bullie. Yes, it definitely can be, unfortunately. These are malformations of the hip and elbow joint that can make it difficult for English bulldogs to walk and move around, let alone run or jog. If your English bullie already has these problems running and jogging will undoubtedly worsen them. Furthermore, as they get older more severe joint problems can arise as well, such as degenerative spine disease. Running and jogging can exacerbate these problems significantly, causing much pain and discomfort for your beloved pooch and the possibility of expensive veterinary visits too. They include; The Weather. Too hot and they will overheat quickly, too cold and they will get a chill just as fast Their Age. The Distance. Running or jogging at a moderate to slow pace is recommended, especially when you consider how quickly English bulldogs can overheat and also that they have very short legs Their Overall Health. The healthier your pupper is the longer they can run or jog without any health risks Is it Worse for English Bulldog Puppies or Adults to Run? Like everything else we talked about this depends on several factors. What you need to consider is that English bulldogs go through several growth phases during their first year of life. If they are allowed to run or jog indiscriminately, it can cause permanent damage to many of their joints and lead to lifelong problems and pain. That includes their knees, hips, shoulders and other joints. Their heart and lungs are also developing and running or jogging can have a detrimental effect on these vital organs too. Which is worse? That being said, we recommend not jogging or running with your English bulldog or, at most, only engaging in this activity once in a while and only if your buddy is an adult in good health. There are many different activities that your English bulldog boo can do with you safely and still have a fun time. Here are a few toys that you can use to play with your bulldog bud and help them get their daily dose of exercise. These are great for tugs-of-war and fetching! American bulldogs less so, however, as American bullies are larger with longer legs and somewhat fewer overall health problems than both their English and French counterparts. I recently reserved an English bulldog puppy. He was born 4 days premature by C-Section and has 7 other littermates. His mother is a red and white, kc registered family pet and his father is a kc registered red and white stud dog who participates in shows. My puppy opened his eyes around 2 weeks old and started walking around 3 weeks old. Fast forward to now, he is 6 weeks old tomorrow. When we saw a video of him walking at 3 weeks old, he seemed to have some weakness in his back legs but we passed it off as normal because he had only just started trying to walk. His siblings seem to have some leg issues too. Another pup in the same video had one leg that seemed to go out to the side, as if stretching. They walk on wooden floor and the grass outside. They are being weaned onto puppy food and are drinking from a bowl etc. Everything else with my puppy is fine, his eating and drinking habits, his toiletry habits etc. They are all booked in to see the vet on Monday and then I am viewing my pup on Tuesday. I am just looking for some piece of mind. Should I be concerned about his legs? Is this true? Any help or advice is welcome and appreciated. Thank you in advance. Contact Us Exercise and Your English Bulldog We are going to touch on a topic most bulldog owners should be conscious of, and at times you may worry about: How much exercise should your bulldog be getting? Of course, answers will vary, but regarding English Bulldogs there are concerns other dog breeds may not experience—joint problems, cardiac ailments, and obesity. With shorter legs, and a broad muscular body it is little wonder that hip and knees can be problematic, especially as dogs age. But, many of these conditions can be avoided, allowing your dog to live a long and healthy life. Along with a nutritious diet, exercise is key. And for bulldogs this can be a little more difficult than with other dogs. However, developing an effective exercise plan for your dog is perhaps easier than your slobbering cuddle buddy will let you know. Over exercise Exercise is important, and since this post is about exercising your bulldog, you may wonder why I am mentioning over exercising. After all, can you actually over exercise a dog? Yes, you sure can. However, a casual walk around the block may be more suitable. For english bulldog puppies, while they are a bundle of energy, a walk around the block may still be a little too much. Understanding over exercising is even more important to bulldog puppies who go through multiple critical growth periods where severe and even permanent damage can occur as a result of over exercise. How many minutes a day should my bulldog work out? Routine is good for bulldogs, and much like developing routines in eating habits to control overeating, an exercise routine as a puppy will help your bulldog keep their heart and muscles strong while limiting damage to their knee and hip joints. Limiting playtime before you encourage a slow-down period for your dog can go a long way to teaching your dog about exercise. For example, 30 minutes of playtime outside for an adult before bringing your dog indoors to slow down is a great way to manage an exercise routine. And after bringing your dog inside limit play times to about 10 minutes every couple hours if your dog is aggressively running around and playing. Low Impact Exercise As you can guess, taking your dog to a dog park, or going for a jog around the lake every day is probably too much for your dog. This means focusing on low-impact exercise that may not always mean running around. First, if you know your bulldog will be running around, you will want to consider the ground. Will your dog be running on cement? Crushed mulch? Wood chips? Or, grass? Softer, and more absorbent, ground is better for your bulldog. Bulldogs love to cuddle, gnaw, and roll around with their toys. Providing toys that will encourage your dog to move around, slow down, and roll around can be helpful. Bulldogs love companionship and are one of the friendliest dogs on the planet. Introducing a pal to bum around with is a great way for your dog to get some exercise and companionship. Whether you have other pets at home, or schedule play-dates, having a friend to roll around with is a great way to get exercise and keep your bulldog emotionally healthy as well. Supervision Supervision should always be considered a regular part of playtime. For example, your dog can go from playing without an issue to suddenly wheezing and limping. Remember too, that bulldogs have developed a high pain tolerance over centuries of warrior-like breeding. This means that your dog could be in pain and struggling, but not slow down. This is where constant supervision will help your dog the most. Signs of overheating, limping, and labored breathing are an indication that playtime is over for now. If the concern does not appear to be serious, or has only just begun it is okay to take your dog inside for a little welcomed relaxation. If you see signs of overheating such as an abnormally wobbly walk, falling down in a casual stride, or passing out, then you should contact your vet immediately. Playtime for your bulldog should be fun. The focus on exercise is to develop a strong heart and strong muscles. With a little routine and fun exercise your dog is on their way to a long and healthy life. Since then they have been dedicated to responsible Bulldog breeding and passionate about breeding as well as competitively showing English bulldogs.
