Favorite thing of most is to find a human and crawl into their laps. Yes, our labs even come into our home and crawl into our chairs and onto the couch. Adults are treated monthly for worms, and provided vaccines as recommended by the vet. Once you see a dog with EIC or CNM you will understand why we test our labs to make sure our puppies will never be affected by these diseases that can be prevented by selective breeding. This area is cleaned and disinfected throughout 24 hours a day. If a puppy has an accident it is cleaned up and then disinfected, this is done so that by the time the puppies are six weeks old they are going outside to potty. Going outside by six weeks old to use the bathroom does help when they leave here at eight weeks old and go to their new homes in house breaking. Security cameras monitor puppies all the time and with this we can see if there is anything that needs to be done to them, while still allowing moms to help with the care of the puppies. Moms need to be able to feel comfortable with the puppies and help teach them the first eight weeks. This also helps make a better puppy when it goes home. We use blankets, towels, toys and other items in with the puppies to entertain them and help them get used to things before they go home. They hear vacuums, tractors, trucks, radio, and other noises as well. In summer time they get swimming pools and if weather is nice they run to the pond for adventures. We provide a large play area with toys to entertain them. They get Kuranda beds to sleep on or play king of the bed on. Puppies are given vaccines, vet care, wormings, vitamins, probiotics daily and fed a good quality feed. We start the weaning process at 3. This is puppy food, goats milk, and probiotic mix that we make for them four times a day. We want to provide you with a happy, healthy puppy and believe that the first eight weeks of life here gets them on the right track. Our puppies are so comfortable they very rarely cry and this is due to the care we provide them. A healthy, comfortable puppy is a happy puppy and that makes them great puppies when they get to go home. We also play with them daily, snuggle with them, and end the day with them fast asleep; before we go to bed all the puppies are sleeping safe inside. Puppies get vet care as needed and a full exam before going home. We also microchip all puppies and pay for the fees so that if they are ever lost someone can find the owners or us. It is climate controlled and the dogs appreciate it. A lot of time, work and details went into the building to make it safe and comfortable for them to use. We wanted to provide them with a safe and clean environment. They have fresh water, food and outdoor access. It has lighting inside to provide them with artificial lighting as well as outside they have natural sunlight. Every dog gets their own Kuranda bed and their own toys. We buy lots of toys here for the dogs and they appreciate that. We believe that if you are going to breed, that care of the adults is just as major as care of the puppies. Care is not just health testing it is also how the animal lives its daily life. Here at Mabry Labs we can sleep soundly knowing our dogs are safe from any bad weather, healthy and happy. The building we use for the puppies went in in March .It is sectioned off inside for each mother, so that moms feel secure with their babies. This makes it so that mom stays calm and relaxed instead of worrying if another animal is going to get her babies. It is climate controlled. We take moms for walks and playtime away from the pups so they get free time as well. Feed is never out of the bowls, so moms can eat what they want when they want. Probiotics are given daily with vitamins. Blankets, towels and toys are given inside and cleaned daily. All floors are disinfected every time we leave the building. There are mats that have disinfectant in them to make sure that our shoes are disinfected every time we enter. We also use disposable booties for our shoes when we enter puppy play areas. As of we have added on a meet and greet building. This is a secure building set up for puppies to play and interact with people no matter the weather outside. It is heated, cooled, has tv, radio, couch, toys, basically it is a house. My office is in it, so that I can spend time working and playing with the pups. We did in order to have a place that would be easy to keep disinfected between people. As much as we welcome people into our home a home can not be cleaned the same as this building. As my social, occupational and personal identities solidified, Dallas remained a constant denominator across each dimension of my self-identity. As life progressed, Dallas effortlessly provided the unconditional positive regard that so many counselors strive to exude to clients. He was present during graduations, new jobs, loss of family members and personally devastating health diagnoses. Whether I was joyous or tormented, Dallas was there to share in my experience and offer the validation I needed through his droopy brown eyes. She promptly told me that Dallas was overweight and kindly pointed out other ways I could best serve Dallas. As we reached relationship milestones and eventually added another companion animal, Willett, Dallas seemed to become even more joyful and content. Dallas Photo courtesy of Corban Smith Dallas gets diagnosed In the 11 years leading up to August , Dallas had survived dozens of mischievous acts that threatened his well-being. I heard him emit a strange noise and looked down to see him convulsing on the grass. As he continued to seize, I held him as I never had before. Covered in morning dew, grass and dirt, I had never felt so helpless. I screamed for my partner, and once Dallas emerged from his postictal phase, we took him to his veterinarian. The news was grim. Given my financial status, the veterinarian advised against costly diagnostic techniques, reasoning that I likely would be unable to afford the likewise costly treatments for whatever was discovered. He concluded that Dallas likely had a sinister brain tumor lurking in his furry brown head and said we should focus on making his remaining time with us as comfortable as possible. As the first pains of grief and guilt set in, I began experiencing shame that I could not afford to give Dallas the care that might prolong our time together just a little longer. Armed with anti-seizure medication and the terrifying knowledge that Dallas would, in fact, no longer be with me one day, I began one of the most stressful years of my life. He would have an extended period of time with no symptoms, then a breakthrough seizure would emerge in the middle of the night like an evil intruder. Slowly, the periods of well-being shortened, and the breakthrough seizures increased in intensity. This slow end-of-life process was excruciatingly unpredictable and painful as I began to experience a feeling of learned helplessness. Each evening, I crawled into bed terrified that at some point in the night, I would hear the initial gag that signaled an episode. During the day, I walked around the house dreading the discovery of puddles from postictal incontinence. I lamented this emotional roller coaster immensely. Periods of health were bright spots in my life, while breakthrough seizures were increasingly darker reminders of reality. This one felt different though. Previous recurrent seizures had presented eight hours after the first; this next round came in just four. A combination of emotional exhaustion, stress surrounding the impending doom, and the reality of treatment limitations all likely contributed. I was disassociated from what was coming later that day and treated it as simply any other day for Dallas. Eventually, the time came to load up, and I experienced the first sense of loss that snapped me back to reality. I had experienced euthanasia of a pet only once before, when I was a little boy. I was transported back to my younger self on that day, attempting to organize thoughts of death and meaning of life in an intellectual way instead of experiencing the present pain. Even in the euthanasia room, Dallas presented in his usual demeanor. Eventually, we were left alone with him. My partner and I sat there, attempting to say our final goodbyes while Dallas tried to reassure us that everything would be OK. My partner was forced to take on the role of veterinarian in telling me what to expect. She kindly outlined the euthanasia process, as I am sure she had previously with countless other mourning owners, but her voice was shaky, and tears were forming in her eyes. Another veterinarian timidly knocked on the door and asked if we were ready. She knelt next to Dallas and began administering the chemical as I tried to remember every detail of my beloved companion lying on the floor. In true Dallas fashion — being the dog that could handle anything and survive — it took an extra dose of the lethal concoction for him to pass into the next world. The Grief Process Grief truly is a unique and unavoidable part of the human experience. We are all forced into grief through loss at some point in our lives. I had experienced loss before in the form of relationships, failed endeavors and hobbies deemed too dangerous for someone of my growing age. But these things were nothing compared to the way Dallas had deeply embedded himself within my self-identity. The pain of this loss permeated through my core. As a counselor, I have been trained on grief, bereavement and the strategies we use to empower our clients. All of that knowledge and experience seemed to dissipate as soon as Dallas was diagnosed. Suddenly, grief and loss were not topics discussed in a classroom; they had become deeply personal. Soon after Dallas was diagnosed, I had begun preparing for his loss as best I could through that classroom knowledge. As a counselor, I try to promote resilience and empowerment in my clients. As I embarked on the dangerous endeavor of becoming my own counselor, I told myself to focus on the tasks I could accomplish to help myself emerge from this process more resilient than I had been going in. As soon as Dallas was diagnosed — and before I sought out knowledge of grief — I had begun to complete the tasks, and I continue to do so after the loss of Dallas. Sometimes I feel content in my accomplishment of tasks, whereas other times I am caught off guard by signs suggesting a lack of progress. My understanding of the grief process so far is that it ebbs and flows in a nonlinear, somewhat unpredictable manner throughout. Task: Accept the reality of the loss. I began to accept the loss of Dallas conceptually as soon as he was diagnosed with the potential brain tumor. During the year of symptom management, I was able to work through this task on a surface level so that I thought I would be ready for my new reality when Dallas was gone. Once Dallas had passed, I struggled with this task on a much deeper core level. Returning home from the veterinary clinic on the day he was euthanized, I was most struck by the sense of numbness. Technology was both a curse and a blessing as I attempted to gain footing on this task. As I scrolled upward, Dallas became younger and more the companion I idealized. Photos of him jumping as high as houseguests offered a stark comparison with the old man that had required assistance to get on the bed. The Live Photo feature was particularly unsettling. By holding my finger on a photo, Dallas all of a sudden sprang back to life, my phone emitting the daily sounds and visuals that I desperately longed for again in our home. Social media did, however, provide one of the best mediums for memorializing Dallas as I continued through this task. My favorite photos discovered while scrolling were shared with friends and family in a memorial post. As others expressed sadness and condolences, I was astonished to learn how many other lives Dallas had touched. Friends and contacts long forgotten reemerged to share stories and memories of Dallas. Many of them validated my new reality without Dallas as being both painful and uncomfortable. Their support helped me better accept this different world and motivated me to move closer to it instead of resisting and staying in the one that was comfortable. Task: Process the pain of grief. I am very fortunate in that any inhibition to process the pain of my grief was self-inflicted rather than being promoted by those around me. I have heard stories of those who lost pets whose grief was disenfranchised by those around them. Expectations to continue working while compartmentalizing grief plague many people after the loss of a companion animal. I was extremely fortunate that no one in my life placed such expectations on me. I was supported and understood as having just lost a family member that was deeply integrated in my self-identity. My work on this task was predominantly inhibited by self-imposed restrictions. People who do not know me well would consider me a classic stereotype of masculinity by most metrics. I am genetically broad-shouldered and proudly wear a full beard. My previous hobbies have included skydiving, riding motorcycles and owning German sports cars. I drive an SUV to my Olympic weightlifting club, and my bias toward men who are similar to me says that the loss of a dog should not break such men down to tears or inhibit their ability to participate in life roles. As I viewed myself through this lens, I repressed the pain and the experiencing of it longer than I should have. Eventually, I could no longer be the stable and stoic presence in my home and work; I had to succumb to the pain. As I began to reconcile my views on masculinity with what I knew as a counselor, I realized the feeling of pain and the expression of my emotions were among the manliest endeavors I could partake in. Task: Adjust to a world with the deceased missing. I tried to steel myself for what an absence of those noises might be like, but the void upon returning home after his passing was still debilitating. My partner and I did our best to make this task as quick as possible. The tumbleweeds of short brown fur were sucked up from the various surfaces where they always clung. These physical reminders were easy to erase; classic conditioning ingrained over the span of 12 years was much more difficult to ignore. Given the enormity of Dallas, there was little he could do that did not resonate throughout our small home. The clicking of his nails as he walked, the thud of furniture as he forcibly followed his intended path, even the heavy panting echoing through the house from his mere existence were all instantly gone. There was no longer a giant brown speed bump in the kitchen to navigate while we were cooking or a face of pure joy at the bottom of the steps when we returned home. Even watching TV at night without the occasional burst of flatulence from the corner of the sectional seemed a foreign experience. Countless other experiences have become isolating and lonely affairs since Dallas passed. Thankfully, as time passes, this task becomes easier as the frequency of unexpected reminders diminishes. Task: Find an enduring connection with the deceased while embarking on a new life. As I move forward in my life, it is impossible not to consider the impression my relationship with Dallas has left and the residual effects it will have in the future. I think of all the lessons I learned from Dallas and how they will present in the future. I wonder how my capacity for caring for those around me would have changed without first caring for Dallas. Lastly, without experiencing the loss of Dallas, I wonder how much less prepared I would be for loss in the future. I feel that my experience of being a caregiver to Dallas has greatly elevated my ability to show compassion and kindness in other roles. Thanks to Dallas, I am able to be a bit better in my many life roles as a counselor, partner, son and friend. This experience has provided me better insight into a process that I had conceptualized only in a classroom previously. Being forced to confront this inevitable human experience has taught me to give clients who are grieving a lot of room and compassion and to hold minimal expectations about how they grieve. Grief is an individualized experience. While there are models, none perfectly encapsulates what it means, feels and looks like to grieve. Our grieving process culminated last year as we traveled home for Christmas. Dallas lived his life, with the exception of his final five months, in my small home in Alabama. Before we moved into a proper home in Virginia with a fenced-in backyard, his outside time was spent on a picturesque patch of land next to a lake. Closing my eyes, I can still picture my happy and healthy Dallas splashing around and chasing geese, frequently looking back at me for encouragement. This location, where Dallas seemed his happiest, is where we spread his ashes on a cold Alabama day with tears in our eyes but a sense of resolve in our hearts. I hope that one day I do find him there again, splashing and galloping, just over the Rainbow Bridge. So many health problems in Labradoodles have obesity as a cause or contributing factor such as cancer, kidney disease, arthritis, and heart disease. Behavioral issues like jumping, barking, and destructive behavior are often made worse by lack of physical activity. Labradoodles tend to be an easy breed for trainability. Keep in mind, sometimes too much of a good thing can be bad. Until your dog reaches their full height and weight, their joints are still developing. Too much exercise or too vigorous of activities can mean life-long bone and joint problems for your Labradoodle. Getting your Labradoodle the proper amount of exercise for their size and age may decrease their risk of many health issues, but there are no guarantees! Puppies are curious, energetic, and love to play. However, their joints and bones are still just beginning to develop. Vigorous or extended periods of physical activity can permanently damage their development. One thing puppies and older dogs both have in common is that they require lots of rest throughout the day for their bodies to recover. Larger dog breeds, such as the Standard Labradoodle, tend to need more physical activity than their smaller counterparts. On the other hand, smaller dogs like the Teacup, Toy, or Mini Labradoodle sizes may need less exercise as adults, but they finish developing quicker. A Teacup Labradoodle, for example, may be done growing as early as months in age. In general, the closer in DNA your puppy is to a Labrador Retriever, the more high-energy they will be. That being said, you should expect and be prepared for a Labradoodle of ANY generation to be high-energy. Labradoodles that are over-exercised may show physical symptoms like sickness, limping, or avoiding going outside. While walking, they may pant excessively and choose to lie down instead of continuing. On the other side of the coin, if your Labradoodle is being destructive or unusually naughty, more exercise may be a good way to calm them down. Exercise combined with mental stimulation does wonders for obedience training! Still unsure about how much exercise your Labradoodle puppy should be getting? However, they grow quickly to their full size so they can ramp up their physical activity early on. When you bring home your Toy Labradoodle puppy at around 8 weeks, start them off with 10 minute play sessions or short potty-break walks times per day. Each month older they get, you can add 5 additional minutes to their daily exercise sessions. Still have them occur times per day as needed. When they reach a full year old, they can start their adult exercise requirements of minute sessions, once or twice every day. For example, two 45 minute walks would be great. An hour walk and a 15 minute game of fetch in the backyard would do as well! When they reach their golden years, scale back the exercise a little to minute sessions once or twice per day. Mini Labradoodle Puppy Exercise Requirements Mini Labradoodles still can have a lot of energy despite their small statures! For the first 3 months, exercise your Miniature Labradoodle in 10 minute sessions times per day. When they reach 4 months in age, you can add 5 minutes to their maximum session time. When they reach their first birthday, you can ramp up their exercise to minute sessions occurring once or twice per day. At 18 months in age, a Mini Labradoodle is likely full-grown and you can increase their exercise to the adult level of minute sessions, one or two times each day. At years old when they start to slow down a bit, ease up their exercise routine to minute sessions, once or twice a day. Remember, getting plenty of rest is key for the health and happiness of older dogs. Standard Labradoodle Puppy Exercise Requirements Standard Labradoodles are large, active dogs and need a lot of exercise. However, due to their growing joints, they need to be eased into this exercise very slowly. Have multiple, short timeframes for walks or play each day to use up their puppy energy! From months in age, 20 minute exercise sessions are appropriate times per day. From months old, increase that to 25 minutes, once or twice a day. When your Standard Labradoodle reaches 18 months in age, they can have minute exercise sessions once or twice a day. Plan for around hours once or twice a day. Combine walking with other activities and games for best results! As your Standard Labradoodles ages and becomes a senior, reduce their exercise to minute sessions, times per day. Remember, the lifespan of a Standard Labradoodle is shorter than the Toy and Mini versions of this breed. While walking is by far the most common way to exercise your puppy, there are so many more options to consider! What type of exercise your Labradoodle puppy partakes in is just as important as how long they spend doing it. Opt for lifting or carrying your pup when possible. Keep your games of fetch low-impact. Long Hikes — Hikes are normally fairly lengthy. Safe Exercise Ideas for Labradoodle Puppies Play Dates with Other Puppies — This not only provides a great opportunity for physical activity, but socialization as well! Slow Walks on a Leash — Going slow allows your Labradoodle to sniff , which is great mental stimulation! Obedience Training — Training wears your puppy out both physically and mentally. Keep sessions short and fun! Keep games of fetch short and in-control. Avoid lots of jumping or other high-impact movements if possible. Here are a handful of creative ways to sneak in some fun physical and mental activity for your pup! Snuffle Mat or Ball Instead of feeding your Labradoodle out of a bowl, try using a snuffle mat or ball on some days! This makes them use their sense of smell and creativity to find it and get to it! They also do an amazing job of incorporating obedience training concepts that will make your dog naturally better-behaved. How Far Can a Labradoodle Walk? When your Labradoodle reaches their adult weight and height, they can walk miles comfortably as long as their stamina is built up. It will be an advantage if you have a fenced garden or yard so your doodle can burn off some energy between walks. You should not get a Labradoodle or any dog if you cannot commit at least one walk every day with your dog. Dogs like routine, but remember, there are strict guidelines to stick to with puppies. It is important not to over-exercise them, particularly with large breeds and crossbreeds like the standard Labradoodles. While their bones and joints are developing, they cannot tolerate a great deal of stress. So, playing Frisbee or fetch for hours with adolescents or puppies is not a good option. You will end up with a dog with health issues and a pile of veterinary bills. Establish a Routine Establishing a routine at an early age is a good idea. Try to get your dog used to exercise at the same time every day that fits in with your daily routine. For example, take the dog out after his morning feed , then perhaps a long walk in the afternoon or when you come home from work and a short toilet trip the last thing at night. Daily exercise could mean a walk around the block, jogging on the bike path, playing fetch the ball, or swimming. Labradoodles love all these activities. Swimming is an excellent way for dogs to exercise in the summertime. A lot of Vets suggest a small water tank not only for remedial therapy but also for canine recreation. Your Labradoodle will dash in and out of the water all day if you let him. Just remember that swimming is a lot more strenuous and tiring for dogs than walking, so do not over-stretch him. Whatever the routine you decide on, your dog should be getting out on a walk at least once a day, and you should stick to it. If you begin by taking your Doodle out three times a day and then suddenly stop, then he will become restless and start to seek attention only because he has been used to having more exercise. Same way, do not take your dog on day-long hikes unless you trained him for it. The dog will probably struggle. Medium and larger Labradoodles may make suitable hiking or jogging companions, but they will need to build up gradually to that amount of exercise. These activities are not ideal for puppies. Exercise for Older Dogs Older dogs also need exercise to keep their body, joints, and systems functioning properly. They will need a less strenuous exercise than younger dogs but still enough to keep them active, alert, and healthy. Physical and Mental Stimulation Labradoodle need sufficient exercise for their physical well-being as well as their mental well-being. They are very intelligent dogs, and without adequate exercise, they can become bored and restless. It can result in behavioral and attention-seeking problems, and some of them may become destructive. Before, experts used to recommend training dogs when they are one year old, but that has changed now. You can start training your Labradoodle from the day you bring him home, even as early as eight weeks. Boredom through lack of exercise or stimulation leads to bad behavior. This is one of the reasons why some Labradoodles end up in rescue centers, through no fault of their own. On the other hand, a Labradoodle that gets plenty of exercise is a happy Doodle and a wonderful companion. It does vary depending on whether you have a Miniature, Medium or Standard Labradoodle, and their energy levels. Labradoodle puppies have different temperaments, and some will be livelier and need more exercise than others. Puppies require much less exercise than fully-grown dogs. If you over-exercise a growing puppy, then you can overtire and may even damage his developing joints. This can cause early arthritis and other issues. The golden rule is to start slowly and build it up. The worst danger is a combination of over-exercise and overweight when the puppy is growing. Increase the walking time slowly as he gets used to the exercise. It will gradually build up his muscles and stamina. Once he becomes adult and fully grown, he can go out for much longer. Puppies have enquiring minds. Make sure that your puppy can exercise every day in a safe and secure area. As I mentioned earlier, your labradoodle can get used to an exercise routine. If you overstimulate and regularly exercise him as a puppy, then he will think this is the norm. The Key is to start a routine that you can follow. Note Do not take your puppy outside until his vaccination is complete, and it is safe to do so. Start with short walks on the leash every day. An excellent guideline is five minutes of exercise x per month of age up to twice a day until the puppy is fully grown. Exercise Tips Never exercise your dog on a full stomach. It can cause bloat, particularly in large dogs. You should not take your dog for exercise within an hour before or after eating. Do not throw a ball or a toy repeatedly for a puppy, as he may run to fetch it to please you. He thinks it is a good game, but he may become overtired and damage his joints, pull a muscle or strain his heart. Most Labradoodles love swimming. Swimming is an exhausting exercise for a dog. It can be great fun for him to fetch a ball or stick, stop the activity after a while. Repeatedly retrieving from water may cause him to overstretch himself. If you over-exercise your dog, it can place a strain on his heart just like humans. The best way to train him to retrieve while he is young. At around 14 weeks up to approximately 26 weeks of age, your bouncy Labradoodle puppy is continuing to develop their skeleton and joints. This development is so important, and dog owners might notice that their pup appears more tired than usual during these initial growth spurts. It is crucial to ensure that your puppy is getting the proper nutrition and proper rest to aid in their normal growth process. Recommended Exercise Time Like other dog breeds, there are recommended exercise time limits for 3-month-old Labradoodle puppies. At this stage of their young lives, Labradoodles can usually handle up to 15 minutes of more vigorous exercise levels two to three times per day. Your puppy should be settling into a normal daily routine, and new activities should be initiated every so often to keep these curious and energetic puppies from getting bored with their lifestyles.
