He humped as a puppy at a specific time of day, with a particular object blankets. However, we settled down as a family to watch TV during this time and did not want to engage with him in play. So, Bailey was bored and excited — excited because the family was together but bored because we did not engage in play. For him, it was a win-win. Plus, it helped him expend energy and deal with intense emotions. Because BAR only humped his blankets and never people or pets, we never felt the need to untrain the behavior. For example, during our recent snap of cold winter, daytime temperatures were in the to Fahrenheit range, and outdoor exercise sessions were a no-go on these frigid temperatures. So, what if the humping behavior occurs with people, or you simply want the behavior to stop. Is there something you can do? So, you have a Golden Retriever that humps when excited. You know what triggers the humping and why and now you want to know how you stop your Golden Retriever from humping. As a general rule, to stop your Golden Retriever from humping, you must interrupt the behavior quickly before or after it starts and redirect the dog into a more appropriate behavior such as a sit or shake and then reward. The goal is to teach your dog that there are better options than humping. To be clear, interrupting the behavior does not mean using aversives such as physical punishment, yelling, or punishing the dog. Instead, it means interrupting the behavior in a calm, controlled manner with the intent purpose of teaching your dog that the behavior is inappropriate. Interrupt the behavior immediately — not 10 or 20 seconds later. You must be present when the dog engages in humping behavior. So, you need to know when it occurs, and you must be around to interrupt it. Make sure your Golden is wearing its collar or harness. Calm the dog for a few seconds, and then redirect its energy into a training or play session or a command such as a sit. Reward the dog for the more appropriate behavior. The reward can be a treat, a toy, or some play. The best time to address the behavior is before it happens. For example, redirect the energy to a high-value toy, something to chew on, or a training session such as asking for a sit. The reward for stopping is it gets to play again. Remember, the dog tries to get attention or relieve arousal by humping. Give it an alternate but positive outlet to do so. Once your Golden Retriever has stopped humping, reward it with a treat. The purpose is to teach that humping is inappropriate and stopping is good. The goal is to be consistent in interrupting and redirecting the humping behavior so it eventually becomes extinct. Aptly, this is called extinction. And be advised that it may take some time for the behavior to become extinct. The video below shows how to deal with humping. In it, the Bow Tie Vet Guy uses the sit command. However, in certain situations, you may find your Golden Retriever is so excited that he tunes you out. In those instances, gently guide the dog off using the collar and redirect the behavior with a sit, toy, or reward. The principles are always the same. Immediately stop the humping — either before or immediately when it starts — redirect to something else, such as a sit or toy, and reward. Stopping your dog three times is not going to make this behavior extinct. How To Stop Your Puppy From Humping December 6, Both male and female dogs hump for a range of reasons, many of which have nothing to do with sexual desire. Why is my puppy humping? Because of this, it can continue into adulthood, even if your dog is female and has been desexed. Some dogs respond to stressful or exciting situations by mounting things. It may also happen if your puppy is scared at the dog park. Sexually motivated mounting is usually accompanied by certain body language: tail up, panting, whining or pawing. What age does a puppy start humping? At around 6 months once your puppy reaches their sexual maturity, their humping will grow more sexually charged. Is it normal for a puppy to hump? Overall, male and female humping is usually a way to alleviate excitement during play, stress relief or an expression of dominance. If humping suddenly appears or grows more frequent, it could be a sign of a urinary incontinence, a UTI, skin allergies or priapism. Why is my female puppy humping? It is not uncommon for female dogs to hump often if they have not been spayed or desexed. Female puppies tend to have their first season anywhere between months old. However, humping in female dogs can still just be the result of them attempting to assert social dominance and honing their social interaction skills. All of this is especially important if you or anyone in your home is allergic to pet dander. As a very important side note: a Doodle being picked up from the groomer sometimes gives us a shock, especially if they were completely shaven down without our consent. Typically, Poodles get a clean face and clean feet and the topknot is rounded with scissors. However, there are many different styles of trims for a Poodle. The listed cuts below are those that first originated for Poodles. By the way, different groomers will have different ideas of how the following types of haircuts should be. Goldendoodles have thick, dense coats which can be a total drag in the hot summer months. But their coats are going to be significantly shorter than normal. However, there are some huge advantages to this trim other than heat considerations. Most dogs look good with a puppy cut; however, the fluffy nature of their coats brings out their charm in this do. Like the kennel cut, this hairstyle is of uniform length all over their body. It also helps give your pup a youthful appearance no matter their age. Instead of uniformly trimming their face, the area around their snoot is a bit longer against the backdrop of the rest of their face. This gives them a unique, playful look. The puppy cut does have some added benefits besides just making your pooch cute as a button. The short length helps them to prevent mattes and tangles. However, it leaves enough hair to prevent them from completely freezing out when it gets colder. They are half-Poodle, after all! Poodle cuts can often come without warning as well. Even though you may have a specific hairstyle in mind, your groomer may think otherwise. With a Goldendoodle, mattes can run relatively deep due to their thick curly fur. This keeps your dog happy and mat-free without ruining their experience at the groomers. And with a Poodle cut, your pup will generally receive a clean low-cut face, back, belly, and sides. But the tops of their head, ears, tail, and legs can normally maintain a thicker, fluffy appearance as that where less matting will occur. Their legs are left a little longer and shaped for a puffier, rounder look. And while the lamb cut comes in at our most radical clip so far, the next style takes things to a whole new level. Lion Cut The lion cut is one of those Goldendoodle haircut styles that can set your dog apart from the rest. Normally given to smaller dogs such as the Pomeranian, the lion cut does exactly what it sounds like—makes your pooch look like a lion! This is done by recreating the shaggy mane of a lion and its signature pom tail. You can also customize the lion cut with specific details. It gives them a bit more body and the illusion of a more muscular stature. This style is achieved by giving your pup a kennel cut but leaving a fluffy mohawk that runs down their back starting from the top knot. You can have it run the width of their topknot; however, a common tactic is to shave the sides down and make it just a tad narrower. Is it going to end near their shoulder blades? Or go down their back a bit? The most fun part about a mohawk cut is the colors that you can choose to dye it! Sure, you can go without, and keep it their natural color. Their dense coats allow for bold cuts and shaping. Just be careful when finding a stylist to do this type of cut. The full shave is exactly what it sounds like. From tip to tail, your Goldendoodle will be completely stripped of their coat. By giving your pup a full shave, you can remove all of those nasty mats and other coat clumps. This allows you to start anew and style as you see fit in the future. This can also be a summer option for those who live in extreme heat or tropical climates. The first big girl or big boy haircut The wavy, curly adult coat will start replacing the soft, fluffy puppy coat around months of age. Waiting to cut the hair until the adult coat makes its debut beneath the layers of puppy fur helps ensure that the adult coat remains soft. Poodle groomers and poodle fanciers claim that shaving a poodle or goldendoodle down before her adult coat starts coming in could damage the adult coat, affecting the texture. Take your goldendoodle puppy for her first full big girl haircut at months of age, once her adult coat has started coming in. Get Your Puppy Started with Weekly Grooming Maintenance Regardless of the coat type, before you start full-on grooming a goldendoodle puppy,they need to get used to regular brushings and the sounds of the grooming table blowers, clippers, etc. Go ahead and blow dry them a little bit after each bath. If you have clippers or beard trimmers, turn on the clippers and let your goldendoodle get used to the sound. Bring the clippers close to their fur in different places, their head, legs, feet. Give your doodles dog treats while the blower or clippers are going so your doodle develops a positive association with those sounds. Brushing your goldendoodle puppy at least once a week is very important. The earliest grooming a goldendoodle puppy needs is often an eye, ear and sanitary trim. When their hair starts getting in their eyes, or fuzzing out their ears, and when poop residue starts clinging to their fur near their butt, your doodle is ready for their first light grooming. Amber is a 5 month old F1 Goldendoodle Puppy. With our puppies that often happens at about weeks of age. You can either take them to the groomer to get this done, or, if you are more of a DIYer like we are, you can do this at home. A little trim around the eyes, a light buzz on the inside of the ears with a small trimmer like this one and some scissor clipping around their potty areas might be enough to tide you over until their coat is thick enough for their first official grooming. Just be careful because doodles can be bouncy. We use safety tip grooming scissors that have rounded ends for the areas around their face. A scissor clip will even her coat out a bit. With that nice coat, we want her to be used to regular grooming and the grooming table as well. Our doodles seem to need their first grooming at about 5 months old, but puppies with an especially thick, full coat, may need it sooner. Puppies with thinner coats, may be able to go longer than that. We do most of our own grooming, when possible. We prefer the longer, shaggier look on our goldendoodles, so we prefer to start with scissor clipping when grooming a goldendoodle puppy. Scissor clipping is all Amber needs for now. A grooming table makes all the difference. We use the large Flying Pig Brand. Grooming a goldendoodle puppy takes skill, but Violet 16 has learned her grooming techniques by watching Youtube videos. Amber feels good and looks so much cleaner and neater after getting all that puppy fuzz off. Dogs with long ears can have more ear trouble as the hair grows and gets trapped in their ears. Once this happens, moisture is retained and yeast and other bacteria can become a problem. Part of your weekly grooming maintenance should be checking their ears and using an ear wash. We use Zymox Otic and use that for 3 or 4 days. Brownie has those long, floppy doodle ears that need regular cleanings to keep yeast growth at bay. Labradors are very affectionate and social creatures. BUT, if kept isolated, they can develop habits such as digging, chewing, barking, and generally destroying anything in sight. We socialize and handle our puppies several times throughout the day and exposed to all the normal and sometimes, not-so-normal goings-on of family life. We try to expose them to as many different sounds as possible so that when they come to your home, some of these sounds are familiar. We also begin using a crate as a group and individually as soon as age appropriate. When it is time to go to their new homes, our puppies are very close to being potty-trained, but are in no way house-broken, they will let you know when they need to go outside, but they can't hold it for too long. We regularly get reports of successful potty-training as well as "sit", "shake", and "lay-down" at eight to nine weeks! We offer a "head start" for our puppies in a loving environment. We grow very fond of our puppies and it's very hard to see them leave, but we know that we have found what we think will be the ideal forever home for our pups. We love getting pictures and updates of our puppies. And we encourage all puppy owners to keep communications open and send lots of pictures as they grow. All our puppies are up to date on shots and worming. They will be micro-chipped, preregistered with the American Kennel Club, and come with a written contract that they are clear of inherited hip problems for a period of 30 months. And since our dogs are tested before breeding, it enables us to also cover over genetic defects for the life of your puppy. We also test the heart, verify full detention, and normal patella. Our primary concerns in order of importance: Health, Temperament and Socialization, and then Coat Color.
