Puppy should always be fed last and you and your family eat first. In the wild, the pack leader eats first, followed by the others in order of dominance in the pack. Your puppy needs to know that ALL members of your family outrank it or the puppy will feel that it is right for it to establish dominance over family members kids by nipping, growling and other doggy dominance behaviors. If you have young children, teach your puppy that it must be invited to eat when you put the food down. After it has learned that with you, your children can take turns feeding it so it learns to mind your children also. Your children with your supervision should not only practice giving the puppy treats where it takes them gently, but they should also take treats or toys away and the puppy must not be allowed to growl or nip. Your puppy should not be allowed to nip or bite. It is not teething, it is establishing dominance. Pinch the upper or lower jaw of the puppy with your fingers and thumb. The object is to make it uncomfortable but not painful. In order of increasing seriousness, the mother will discipline as follows: 1. Glower and walk away 2. Growl 3. Growl and nip pinching can imitate this 4. Grab bite the scruff of the neck and shake the scruff. If you do use 5, it is important that it not be done for minor naughtiness, as it is a serious action. If you use an overly severe discipline, you are being a bully. After it wakes up, it goes outside for a potty, gets rewarded, and comes back inside to play for a while… you get the idea! Puppies will circle and squat just before peeing, so if you are watching, you can catch it just before it starts to pee or just as it begins, and quickly take it outside with your treat too! Girl puppies are more succeptible to bladder infections than boys, but boys can get them too! In later stages of a bladder infection, you will see blood in the pee, sometimes LOTS of it. If you can catch it in the early stages, it is much better for the puppy… If you are familiar with homeopathics, they can often be used successfully to treat bladder infections. It's absolutely crazy that it's been over 8 years since I've hopped on to this blog and shared snippets of life here at Calypso Breeze Australian Labradoodles. A lot has happened in that time, good and bad. Let's get the bad right out of the way. A little less than a year after my last blog post, I lost my husband and Calypso Breeze Co-founder, Jerry, to cancer. It was, for the most part, very sudden and set my world into a tailspin. There have been many ups and downs and trials and triumphs in the years since, but the constant has been that Calypso Breeze remains a huge part of my life. In the first months after Jerry passed, life, of course, was extremely difficult. I'm not sure what I would've done without the love- and distraction- of my crazy doodles. They're sweet and silly, kind and goofy, sometimes exasperating, but ALWAYS entertaining, and most importantly, they're loving. They have, most likely, held me together and they've definitely made me stronger. THIS is why I've continued on my journey of breeding these incredible dogs. With people, Victorian Bulldogs can be very social dogs, and love to meet new people. With good socialisation from a young age, these dogs can make wonderful family pets. These dogs do very well in family environments, as they are fantastic with young children and will fit right in with your family. Their stocky build is deceptive, they do well in smaller spaces and are also suited for apartment life, and do not need a lot of yard space to run and play in due to their lazy temperament. Although this dog is renowned for its patience, and generally will be more than happy to let children climb all over them, it will still have a breaking point. How to Train A Victorian Bulldog These dogs are very intelligent animals and because of their temperament respond very well to basic dog training. Being a bull breed, most people think that dominance training is the way forwards with these dogs. However, the exact opposite is true. Due to their loving and loyal temperament, Victorian Bulldogs do not respond well to any form of dominance or force-based training and should only be trained with positive reinforcement. This breed responds very well to clicker training — as a form of positive reinforcement. This may be something you want to try with your pooch. Positive reinforcement will go a long way to training a well-rounded dog. These dogs love to please, therefore training your dog , with a food-based reward, will help to make training more encouraging for them given their sometimes stubborn nature. Caring For A Bulldog Bulldogs are quite intolerant to heat, and although Victorian Bulldogs fair better than their flatter-face cousins, they are still susceptible to overheating. Be sure to be aware of the temperature and try to keep time spent outside and play to a minimum on hotter days. Exercise Requirements As a medium size dog, they require only 40 minutes of exercise daily — not like the minutes required by Husky Lab Mixes! This can be split into two walks a day and spread out over morning and evening. Some sort of exercise is required; be it a walk or yard play, as getting them active every day is extremely beneficial for you and their health and wellbeing. Yard play may also be beneficial for this dog. Old English Bulldogs love to play tug of war and these guys are no different. Any toy that you give a bulldog should be durable, as these dogs love to chew. Try enticing your dog with a tug rope to engage those muscles and encourage a full body workout. Grooming and Shedding These dogs are average shedders, shedding lightly throughout the year and heavily twice a year with the seasons. They will need light grooming with a fine bristle comb. This pooch is not a fan of water and so you may only wish to bathe him when necessary. When bathing, it is important to make sure you run a damp cloth under all their folds of skin and properly dry those areas too. When grooming, it is also beneficial to clean their ears and eyes to prevent infection. You may also want to brush their teeth to account for their doggie breath. Feeding and Diet Like most Bulldogs, this dog does very well on a raw diet too. To feed your dog a raw diet requires a basic understanding of nutrition, and therefore is not suitable for inexperienced owners. The most defining part of the breed is that it should be as great in circumference as possible circumference should be equal to height, more superior bulls will have greater circumference of head than height. Circumference of head of females will not be as large as males. Cheeks should be well defined, showing power; definition of cheeks to be considered by age of Bulldogge this feature gains more definition with age ; 2 to 3 years final maturity. Too much attention should not be placed on this feature in a young Bulldogge. Jaws should be as follows: lower jaw projecting further than upper jaw which will give the jaw an upward turn. The bite should be square. Tusk Teeth : Canines should be wide apart with smaller teeth set in between canines. Lips should be loose and heavy without being sloppy , hanging below jaw, should be full in appearance. Nose must lay well back, large, broad and moist; perfectly black preferred; partly colored or Dudley noses are not preferred but are not a disqualification. Eyes are set as far apart as possible; eyes should be large without bulging; eyes should be perfectly set equal on each side from the middle of the skull. The ears should be rose shaped short, small and fold more to side or button semi-pricked with forward fold. The stop is the indentation between the eyes. The stop should be deep and wide, it should extend to the skull; this feature gives the skull a square appearance. The deepness of the stop gives more definition as to how the eyes and ears are set. Thick, strong and arched, with loose skin forming dewlap on each side, the neck should be short, not having a long appearance at all. Bulldogges should have what is called a bull-neck thick, muscular and Short , not a goose-neck overly long or little muscle , which would show no strength or shape. The shoulders should be broad and deep. The chest should be well sprung and deep. A rise to the rear is desired as long as it is not in excess, making the symmetry of the dog suffer. Chest is as wide and deep as possible with ribcage in proportion. Ribs should be round. Loins should be powerful with tuck-up that does not take away from the cobby appearance. Either straight, turning down, or screwed. The tail should not be carried over the back. There are no deductions for a docked tail, as it has no bearing on the quality of the dog. Hind legs should be higher than the front legs without exaggeration, they should turn out at stifle knee without excess which causes hock to turn inward slightly; the feet are longer than the front feet and are compact. Forelegs are shorter than the hind legs; forelegs should be powerful and can be straight or bowed without excess. The forelegs should be turned out a little at the shoulder so that the body can swing. Should be straight at the pastern, feet should be large, moderately round. The toes should be split without being splayed. There are no deductions for tight toes. Solid Black is an undesirable color. Blue is not an original color of the Bulldogge, but is allowable. When judging the color should not play a factor in the quality of the dog; the color of the bulldogge should not be considered except in cases of equal merit. The undesirables would then take second. The coat is short and close; it is very smooth and silky to the touch. Temperament The Olde Victorian Bulldogge is a loyal, well-tempered, steady dog. He gets along well with other family pets when raised with them and loves children. He is brave and protective. He saves his deep bark for really important matters. He is large and strong. If he senses his owners are not as strong minded as himself he can become stubborn so strong leadership is advised. As a puppy, they will chew everything they can find. The Bulldogge should be steady, loyal and true with a dependable nature. He should be bold without aggression. The objective in training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in their pack. When we humans live with dogs , we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success. What Is a Busy Box? Also called an enrichment box, foraging box, or destruction box, a busy box is a super simple DIY interactive puzzle. You start with a basic cardboard box and then fill it with dog toys and random stuff lying around your home particularly things you can hide treats in! Before we take a closer look at busy box stuffing ideas, I want to say a big thank you to my friend Tori, founder of WearWagRepeat. We recently did an Instagram Live together where she introduced me to this genius idea. You can use an old soda can box, LaCroix box, cereal box, etc. It can be a squeaky toy or a crinkle toy. Balls — If your dog loves tennis balls or Hol-ee balls then add that to the box too! Treat-Filled Towel — Grab a clean washcloth or dish towel and roll treats inside. Loose Treats — To sprinkle in the box! Stuff the box with goodies. Use the list of ideas I mentioned above and get creative with your own! Sprinkle a few loose treats into the box. Lightly close the top of the box. Give it to your dog to rip open, forage through, and play with! Toys can even help prevent your dog from developing certain problem behaviors. Although cats can be pretty picky about toys, dogs are often more than willing to play with any object they can get their paws on. That means you'll need to be particularly careful when monitoring your dog's playtime to prevent any "unscheduled" activities. Ensure safety Many factors contribute to the safety or danger of a toy, and a number of them depend upon your dog's size, activity level and preferences. Another thing to consider is the environment where your dog spends their time. Although we can't guarantee the safety of any specific toy, we can offer the following guidelines. The things that are usually most attractive to dogs are often the very things that are the most dangerous. Dog-proof your home by removing string, ribbon, rubber bands, children's toys, pantyhose and other inedible items that could be swallowed. Be sure to buy toys of appropriate size for your dog. She spent time to analyze how my do dog interacted with me, with her and with the environment in which it lives. We then started to work on our training regimen. Later, reactivity became a major issue, as well as going after our cats. He needed a total overhaul. From the moment I spoke to Susie, I felt a connection. She wasn't just a dog trainer, she really seemed to understand us as well. From the moment we met Susie, we knew we'd made the right call. She's only been here once, but we know it won't be the last. She spent over two hours evaluating him and it was clear that Dakota respected her. She never yelled at him, it was just her authoritative tone and body language that made the difference. Before we even met face to face she had us walk him around the block so she could observe his behavior. My husband and I were terrified she was going to tell us that he was too aggressive and would need to be rehomed. I feared for her safety as well, not knowing how Dakota would respond to her. We had stopped taking him on walks over a month before, because of how reactive he was. Dakota is 85 pounds and pulls me around like a ragdoll when he sees another person or animal. But then something amazing happened. That's right. What we perceived as outright aggression towards another person wasn't aggression after all. She told us she saw no reason he'd have to be rehomed. What a relief! My husband and I aren't rich by any means and yes, the initial evaluation cost wasn't cheap, but that peace of information as well as peace of mind we gained from her, was worth every penny we invested. It's made us see our dog differently. Knowledge is definitely power. She touched on his separation anxiety, and also explained how nutrition plays an active role in behavior. We were sickened to learn what was actually in his dog food. She worked on his reactivity to knocking at the door, and within the first session Dakota had already begun catching on not to bark and go at the door. I was impressed. But the most impressive thing was her work with him being around one of our cats. Before she left she had both eating side by side. Never in a million years would I have believed that possible. Don't get me wrong, there's a ton of work to be done on this, but it's a start, and we know that he's now capable of "playing nice" with our cats and it gives us hope that one day we'll be able to grant Dakota freedom around them once again. We had very separate issues with both our dogs one is friendly but gets over excited, the other fearful and anxious and mildly aggressive. Susie was so helpful in helping us with both issues. She provided tips and exercises that have helped and corrected some of the issues within just a day or two. We had a follow up phone call 4 days after her visit where I learned even more. Susie is an expert in her field and I highly recommend her! I am so proud of you and Kyle to be following through with all your homework, and that it is already making such a difference, .He is not and was not ever a "bad" dog, however our home situation changed and we now have several residents with disabilities in wheelchairs. Gus was a little out of his mind. We reached out to Susie via a referral from a friend and are NOT disappointed. She gave us some immediate and strict guidelines to follow until she could come for a training. Long story short, she did not need to come at all. Gus has acclimated extremely well and is not going to need on-site training. Susie has called multiple times to follow up and has done all of this at NO Charge.
