Chronic vomiting or diarrhea is common or it may flare up suddenly and then improve again for a time. Stress, diet change, or intestinal parasites may make it worse. If your friend has diarrhea or digestive upsets that are not explained by the more common reasons, diagnostic tests, which may include intestinal biopsy, will be needed. Lifetime medications and special diets are usually required to keep this bellyache under control. Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea surface of the eyeball. This is an extremely irritating and painful condition that can ultimately lead to blindness. It can happen in any dog breed; however, your French Bulldog is especially at risk for this heritable disorder. Surgical correction is usually successful if performed early. If you elect to feed cooked meat, choose organic turkey only at this young age. I always have clean water available day and night. If your puppy is experiencing separation anxiety and not wanting to eat then you can offer goats milk kefir or yogurt as well as egg yolks. Goats milk kefir and egg yolks are hard for puppies to resist and it will provide both hydration and calories. Clip nails monthly at a minimum. The more frequently nails are clipped, the shorter they will become. Same applies to their tail pocket. Puppies don't typically have tail pockets, but as they matures this feature can develop. The most important step is to very thoroughly dry your puppy whenever they are wet! I check this area with each bath, and completely dry the paws especially in between the toes after each bath and each time they get wet. If you notice redness between the toes, then it is likely yeast. I personally do not brush the teeth of my dogs, and have never had a dental issue. Providing large raw real bones for chewing will naturally clean the teeth and this is something that I give all of my dogs. However if you are keen on doing so, daily brushing will provide additional protection to your dogs teeth. There are special savory flavored tooth pastes just for dogs available to make this task more enjoyable for your puppy. As a preventative measure you can also add a specially formulated probiotic into their water to support dental health called TEEF. I administer these vaccines at home in a single dose containing all five strains of virus. I use the brand name Duramune Max and I special order these to be delivered to be via one-day-air on ice to ensure their viability. This initial dose is given once your Frenchie turns at least 7 weeks old. Please wait a minimum of 3 weeks to give the next booster vaccines. This is very important, I do not recommend the leptospirosis vaccine due to a high rate of adverse reactions. It is not necessary unless your French Bulldog puppy will be in frequent contact with wildlife or livestock and you live in an area where leptsospirosis is rampent. Bordetella can be given at 10 weeks old and rabies can be given once your puppy is a minimum of 3 months old. I also give my adult French Bulldogs a booster of Bordetella kennel cough as well as canine influenza vaccine once each flu season. Deworming Simply due to the nature of puppies, I recommend you submit a fecal sample during your initial vet visit. I deworm the entire litter multiple times before coming home to you. But please understand that puppies are messy creatures. Puppies also put absolutely everything in their mouths including each others paws. So please understand its likely that you may need to continue one last treatment of dewormer when your puppy comes home, even if they are having solid poops. All of my mamma dogs are dewormed before and after having their litters as well to reduce exposure to internal parasites. Additionally I deworm all of my adult dogs twice yearly with a combination of metronidazole and fenbendazole, or drontal plus. Certain parasites like giardia are extremely difficult to eradicate in our cool and wet climate. Giardia will live in the soil and water and can be spread through wild animals coming through your yard as well. Adult dogs with strong immune systems will develop antibodies to giardia and will have no symptoms. Puppies who test positive for giarida may or may not have symptoms. I personally have never had a flea or tick problem with any of my dogs in all my years of breeding and I choose not to treat my pets with pesticides. Pesticides are teratogenic and can cause birth defects as well as neurologic disorders such as seizures. Personally I would only consider one dose of oral NexGuard during the hottest month of Summer when these parasites are most active in my geological area. Each individual dog and household must weight the risks and benefits to use or not to use pesticides based on their personal circumstances and geological area. I understand you might live in an area with a known problem with these external parasites or might be living on a farm where it will be necessary to keep them under control. There are many different kinds of medications that can be used but they treat different things, some are applied topically, some given orally, some work for one month and others up to 8 months, and some medications will also treat internal parasites in addition to external. They are a combination of any two colors, one darker and one lighter. The lighter color is over the eyes, on both sides of the face, under the ears and tail, across the chest and on all four lower legs. Americans in the New England States imported Solid colors from Germany and produced the Solid colors in America by restricting any other color than Solid in confirmation shows. Athletic and easy to train, all sizes of Poodle excel at obedience, agility, and tracking events. Unfortunately, as breeders attempt to fulfill the demand by breeding for specific colors or characteristics, so they have turned to inbreeding methods to produce these. This has resulted in a higher level of inbreeding that is desirable or sustainable. Like all Poodles, proper coat care is extremely important to prevent mats, dreadlocks, hot spots and skin infections. You should bathe your Phantom Poodle every month with a shampoo made specifically for Poodle s and brush him daily. If you cannot manage the longer coat, keep him in a short cut. Proper nutrition is very important. Feed your Poodle a high-quality dry, wet or raw food. It is because of these origins that the Poodle gained its remarkable hairstyles. Even the classic Poodle topknot with its colorful bow comes from its sporting heritage. It is said to have been used to identify and locate the dog when working in the water. As it was introduced to other parts of Europe, like France and England, the Poodle was given a new role — that of truffle hunter. They come in a variety of colors including silver, blue, grey, black, and brown. The brindle pattern may cover the whole body or be on the colored part of the dog not the white areas. It is possible to have a tuxedo or spotted parti poodle with a brindle pattern. Phantom poodles have markings often compared to those of a doberman pincher. There are several other breeds that have this color pattern. While phantom-patterned dogs have 2 coat colors, the markings of a phantom poodle are in a specific pattern, unlike a parti colored dog. When a poodle is groomed you often may see dark markings only on the longer hair such as the tips of the ears. A puppy that is born a dark brown or black that is also a sable may lighten to a creme with just dark tips. Tricolored poodles are genetically two color patterns. They are a parti colored poodle with phantom markings. The legs may be white as is often seen on a parti dog. The only phantom marking that occur may be seen on the face and eyebrows. You may see poodles with multiple patterns such as a brindle parti or brindle tuxedo. There are also brindle and phantom poodles, sable and phantom, and sable and brindle combinations all with or without parti markings. Dogs may have a black or dark mask on the face which is considered rare. The markings of a multi-colored dog may also change over time, which can be interesting to see. IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome In regard to digestive issues, this does not necessarily mean that the issue is IBS irritable bowel syndrome , though it may be and many of the signs and symptoms may make it appear to be. This includes: -Stomach cramps Most canines that are suffering from discomfort will seek out a place to retreat and may not want to be touched. If pain is severe, a dog may snap at his owners even if this is completely out-of-place behavior. A normal, healthy stool will be a consistency that resembles dough; if you were to pick it up, it would stay in one piece yet be pliable. For those Poodles that have chronic stomach upset, there may be a change back and forth from both conditions. In general, a dog should have a health bowel movement 2 to 3 times per day. With many, the act of eating triggers the movement. If your Poodle has 1 or 2 of the above signs, this points to stomach problems, however this does not automatically mean that the puppy or dog has IBS. Quick Changes in Food One of the top causes of stomach upset is a quick change in main meals or the addition of an ingredient usually a snack that was not previously given. If there has recently within 12 hours been a change to what a Poodle has eaten, removing this item from the diet and then treating symptoms as listed ahead usually resolves things. If you wish to switch the main course, do so gradually over the course of 3 to 4 weeks. This is done by starting off with ratio of 'old' to new. Be sure to mix it and blend it together well. Vomiting as Part of Upset Stomach Issues Aside from bloating, gas, mucus, diarrhea and constipation, a Poodle may be struggling with an upset stomach may vomit. Even more than digestion issues, it is throwing up that brings up a red flag to owners that their Poodle is having tummy troubles. Usually, if vomiting is acute - is a one-time occurrence or happens for 1 day - this can often be attributed to a fast moving stomach bug, ingestion of spoiled food or eating when slightly under heat stress. However, if vomiting is chronic - an ongoing problem - it is time to look to triggers so that issues can be resolved more ahead Other Signs of Tummy Issues - Some Poodles may have a moderate to severe upset stomach, but will not actually vomit. However, these Poodles may dry heave, spittle up just a bit of food or have a reluctance to eat as normal - either not eating as often during the day or just nibbling at food and not eating as much as usual. With moderate to severe stomach pain, the cause may be something that needs veterinary care including: Parvo, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, intestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, giardia and more. Severe bloating should never be overlooked as it may be Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus commonly known as bloat or killer bloat. It can be fatal if not treated immediately and owners should never second guess their decision to seek vet care immediately since this is a life threatening health condition. This affects Standard Poodles most often, however owners of any variety Poodle should be aware of the possibility. The only exception to this is puppies under 3 months and Toys under 6 months. In cases where it is appropriate to switch to a bland diet to calm the stomach down, the best recipe for upset stomach is the most simple: White rice boiled, plain, no extra seasoning and de-boned, no-skin, white breast chicken meat boiled, plain, no extra seasoning. You will want the ration of rice to chicken to be .Be sure to dice the chicken into very small pieces. Even if you believe that you are feeding your Poodle on a good schedule, the sign of vomiting yellow stomach bile means that it is time to offer smaller, but more frequent meals. Some Poodles simply need to have something in their stomachs most of the time and changing from 2 meals to 3 or adding more snacks but smaller meals can allow the puppy or dog to maintain a healthy weight while keeping the stomach satisfied. A does is even 3 to 5 times per day, 1 to 4 hours apart. Both work to sooth an irritated stomach and intestines. Help for Chronic Upset Stomach The most common reason for a Poodle to have ongoing stomach problems is a food intolerance - which is different than a food allergy. Intolerance to certain ingredients can upset both the stomach and the digestive tract. With this said, even a high quality food may contain an ingredient that triggers stomach problems. If you feel comfortable with what you are feeding your Poodle, you may wish to stay with the brand, but change the variety. For example, lamb to fish or fish to chicken. It is overstated that dogs are allergic to grain, since the majority are not…however if cheap dog food ingredients are ruled out and the main protein source is changed without results, switching to a grain free variety may be just the trick. A little bit of occasional mucus coating dog poop is perfectly normal. After all, the top lining of a dog's intestines is an essential mucosal barrier. But if you see large amounts of sticky poop or slimy stool, there may be digestive issues, particularly if you see blood or diarrhea too. Mucousy dog poop can result from parasites like Giardia or pathogens such as E. So be careful when removing it, as it could be contagious to humans. Make sure to clean the area thoroughly. It can also result from allergies, injuries, or diseases in the gut, pancreas, or gallbladder. Or you can try freeze-dried, raw or dehydrated options. Common issues may be due to an inflamed colon or mild inflammation in the gut. It may also be due to parvovirus or parasites. While it is advisable to be careful, there is usually a good chance that the mucus will clear up after a few rounds of bowel movement a couple of days. If the poop is still the same, please visit your favourite vet. The colour can be fresh red or very dark red. However, the causes can range from relatively minor to very serious. A minor issue will be because the stools are too hard which causes abrasion when it is coming out. Extreme issues will be due to the presence of possible ulcers or tumours. More serious diseases like diabetes, thyroid issues can also make your dog extra hungry. These are meant to be considered with caution, and only during the initial discovery of the poop problem. During this period, giving slightly more vegetables or starches is alright, as the purpose is to help cleanse the body and solidify the stools. Feeding bones is also another option. A couple of raw or dehydrated chicken or duck feet or wings do not feed cooked — feed raw, dehydrated, or freeze-dried may help. You can also give some pre and probiotics to help with maldigestion, especially diarrhea issues. Continue for a few meals and monitor the condition of the poop for a couple of days. See if the loose stool improves. Give plenty of clean water during this period too. If your dog drinks by itself from the bowl, then it is great. This can potentially indicate a presence of worms. When the diarrhea or constipation comes with blood, and lasts more than bowel movements or more than 2 days. If your dog experiences vomiting, fever or behavioural change together with diarrhea or constipation — then you need to consult the vet immediately.
