I took him to a ribbon parade at the suggestion of some dog people won a ribbon and was hooked! Unfortunately things did not go well with Rokko and I had to let him go. It was some time before I was allowed another dog. In those early days with Rokko I used to admire a couple that used to arrive at the shows with a tribe of Boxers, and decided I would have one of those one day. I can still remember picking her up from the airport like it was yesterday; it was love at first sight. Tara was spoiled rotten, and as a result I gave her to close friends when I left home as she spent every minute I was at work howling, and barking! Kenya was the love of my life, and best mate. She was so loyal. Kenya is behind everything we have bred in our kennel. Our dreams came true when we purchased our lifestyle block in Ohoka where we have 3 cows, 25 or so sheep, a vast number of chickens, a cat and our boxers who enjoy the country life, and given the opportunity when Dad and mum are not looking chasing the odd chicken or two. In our quest for perfection our emphasis is not only on confirmation but also on health and temperament. We hope you enjoy looking at our dogs. Trental cars cheap Trental cars cheap Hours Temporary. The Animal Justice Party said three surviving puppies were shipped to pet shops. The shop's owner Victor Finkelstein told the publication he sourced puppies from the Inverell breeder but didn't think they had been treated badly and didn't know about the conditions on the farm, which had been raided by the RSPCA in .The council brought hundreds of charges that were later settled out of court with no conviction against the breeder, who was allowed to continue operating. Advertisement A whistleblower, reportedly a former worker on the farm, told WAToday that Strawberry smelled "like death", probably because another worker who had bathed the poor dog reported finding parts of dead puppies and maggots in Strawberry's vagina and mouth. Strawberry's short life was allegedly lived in terrible conditions. Related articles.

Many Boxer owners claim that once you own a Boxer you will be smitten with the breed and never think about owning another dog. They are particularly celebrated for their clownish antics and sense of fun during a very prolonged puppy-hood. But that is not to say that this dog does not also have a serious side. Added into the mix is the tenacity and drive of the Terrier influence. The Boxer is a very energetic and athletic dog with a high prey drive. This means that you can expect this dynamic dog to boisterously chase and run around. Some of the breed will go after small animals on a walk and this combined with an inquisitive nature means that they love to explore. This means recall should be an important feature of the training regime. This is also a very active breed who need a good outdoor space to play in and once they have fully grown thrive on long walks and plenty of exercise. Like the Boxer , when fully grown, they are able to walk for many miles tirelessly. So the Great Dane Boxer mix will require plenty of exercise, but will offer an excellent companion to any hikers or long distance walkers out there. The Great Dane could suitably be described as the biggest lapdog on the planet and have been known to follow their humans absolutely everywhere. The Boxer is another dog who absolutely thrives on human company and will want to constantly play with his human family. The Boxane is a hybrid whose parent breeds have a lot in common. Both the Great Dane and the Boxer also share common heritage in that the Mastiff is thought to have influenced both breeds. As with all mixed breeds, the Boxane could favor either parent breed in a number of ways. This dog, like both parent breeds, will have a lean muscularity as well as an athletic build with a well defined, tucked up stomach and flanks. The back will be straight and the tapering tail carried high. The bluntness of the short muzzle of Boxer is likely to be softened by the influence of the Great Dane which is deeper and more squared. There is a possibility of some slight furrowing or wrinkles on the forehead through the Boxer influence. The Boxane is a very physically impressive dog with a kind inquisitive expression. The Great Dane not only casts a large shadow, but literally becomes a a large shadow as it follows its owners around. The Boxer influence will do little to mitigate this as they are also a people-oriented breed and extremely loyal. Nevertheless this hybrid breed is going to need a very active and experienced owner willing to spend time ensuring this dog is socialized and fully entertained with extensive walking and lots of interactive play. So you can certainly expect a Boxer Great Dane Mix to be an exuberant and spirited. This means it will require consistent , patient training which is firm but gentle and based around positive reinforcement. With socialization and training the Boxane will be a confident and obedient dog who is both a good companion in the home, and a well-behaved canine citizen outside of the home. But the Great Dane influence is likely to temper this stubbornness, and both dog breeds thrive on praise and are very eager to please. You can therefore expect a Boxer Great Dane Mix to be a devoted companion who will generally be biddable. It is important, however, to make sure any training is governed by an approach based around positive reinforcement to ensure the dog is happy, confident and a joy outside of the house. But this dog will want to play with everything that moves including children and any other pets. The Boxer is people-oriented but will still be protective of its family when strangers are in close proximity of its human pack. It will also bark an alarm if anyone approaches the house adding an edge to the more mellow and accepting temperament of the Great Dane. Also both of these dogs are powerful and swift, so the deep resounding bark of the this dog will quickly followed by this lithe and muscular guardian. But you can be certain that with socialization in place any welcome visitors will have absolutely nothing to fear. The Boxane is likely to be gregarious and willing to play with other dogs, although due to the Boxer influence there may be the occasional episode of dominant behaviour or aggression with a few dogs. Nevertheless early socialization will generally ensure that this huge hound will enjoy play-time with its canine pals without incident. This dog will be able to live with smaller animals and other dogs but if you are bringing a puppy home to an established dog this should be done in a carefully structured way as outlined in introducing a puppy to an older dog. The Boxane is a dog who will benefit from a good run of the leash each day. But ensure that the Great Dane Boxer Mix is trained in recall from as early age as possible to ensure that they are consistently manageable and obedient outside. Remember also that any Great Dane hybrid dog requires special consideration in terms of the planning of exercise for puppies and young dogs that are still growing. This means that exercise should initially be compartmentalized into little and often rather than one walk in the very early years of the dog. This is because over-exercise can potentially damage bones, ligament and joints in the Great Dane and potentially also in this dog. If you are concerned regarding this then it is highly advised that you discuss this with a vet alongside feeding and other aspects of fundamental care for this huge hybrid. For an experienced owner who is also very active the Great Dane Boxer Mix makes an absolutely wonderful family pet. The ideal owner will be active, patient and willing to put in time to socialize and train this dog. Also any experience with large and powerful breeds would be hugely beneficial. Due to its size, power and high energy levels this dog is best suited to a home environment where they have human company for most of the day. If it is essential to leave this dog for any period of time regularly then it is absolutely imperative to offer training for separation anxiety at an early stage. Like all Great Dane hybrids, this dog will suffer without strong canine leadership. Any less experienced dog owners should prioritize attendance at puppy training classes in order to support their dog feeling happy and secure. The Great Dane Boxer Mix has very minimal grooming requirements. The short and sleek coat is only likely to require a weekly brushing. But when that dog is as big as a Boxane, there are a few extra things you need to consider. For starters, these dogs need a great deal of outdoor space. Ideally, that should be in the form of a large and secure yard in which they can run about freely. From a financial perspective, you should also consider whether you can afford to keep a dog this size. Boxanes eat a large amount of food, and not only does the cost of their food add up, but everything they need, including things like vaccinations and holiday boarding, will cost more than it would be for a smaller dog. As is typical with hybrid breeds, particularly those with parent dogs that have significant physical differences, the appearance of your puppy can vary substantially, depending upon which genes are most dominant. This means that fully grown Boxanes from the same litter may have a weight range of between 60 and pounds. Neither the Great Dane nor the Boxer has a reputation for being an excessive barker, a trait that they have passed on to the Boxane. This is not to say that they are not vocal dogs, just that they will usually vocalize with a range of grumbles, growls, and whines. Aggression toward other dogs is a trait that the Boxane can sometimes inherit from their Great Dane parent and is an issue that if left unchecked, can be particularly problematic given their size. Fortunately, this aggressive behavior can be prevented or at least greatly reduced through early socialization, ongoing regular exposure to other dogs, and training. To start with, due to their size, they need a family that lives in a house with a large yard. The Boxane is not at all suitable for life in an apartment. They are typically quite good with children. However, they are excitable dogs, and when they start running and jumping about the place, they can unintentionally knock a small child over and injure them. For this reason, the Boxane is not the best dog to get when you have toddlers and young children. They require a great deal of exercise each day, and you need to be prepared to spend several hours a day taking them out for a long walk or run. You should also be prepared for them to take over and destroy your yard. As any owner of a big dog will tell you, it is next to impossible to maintain a nicely manicured lawn when you have a large dog romping around on it every day. We recommend that a Boxane should be fed high-quality, size-specific dog food, such as Royal Canin Large Adult Dry Dog Food , which will meet all their daily nutritional requirements. Being large dogs, Boxanes can be susceptible to joint problems later in their life, and these can be more of a problem when a dog is overweight. On average, your Boxane will require at least 60—90 minutes of vigorous exercise each day. In addition to taking them for a walk or run around the neighborhood, you may want to consider activities such as hiking or trail running , as exploring new areas and different routes is a great way to prevent boredom from setting in. They do, however, have a bit of a stubborn streak. So, unless you find a way to keep their training fun and interesting, you may have trouble getting your dog to go along with the program. As mentioned earlier, it is imperative that in addition to obedience training, you take the time to socialize your Boxane while they are young. It is particularly important that your dog gets comfortable meeting and playing with new dogs while still a puppy, to prevent them from showing aggression toward other dogs later in life. They have short straight hair that will not knot or tangle, so they can typically get away with being brushed once every couple of weeks. Regular bathing is not required either, which given the size of the Boxane, is fortunate. As with all dogs, your Boxane will need to have their nails clipped every four to six weeks and will also benefit from having their teeth brushed with canine toothpaste regularly. A post shared by Mack and Cheese mack. But apart from this, they are generally quite healthy dogs. Of course, there are a few conditions to which Boxanes are susceptible. Boxers were the 14th most-popular dog in , according to statistics from the American Kennel Club. Boxers have a fair bit of energy, and can be quite stout and sizeable animals. This makes them great fits for active families, couples or single individuals. How Did Boxers Come About? They remained as cattle dog herders before assuming their contemporary role as companion pets. Crossbreeding dogs became popular in the United States in the s and peaked during the s and early s. This German breed of dog has been around for over years, descending from Mastiff-type dogs that once roamed with the Romans in England. The Great Dane was originally used as a guard dog of German estates and the carriages that carried German aristocrats around in the 17th and 18th centuries. Later, the Great Dane came to the United States and aside from being a companion pet, has also been used as a policing dog. Despite their gigantic size, the Great Dane is a very popular American family dog, ranking 17th in the overall rankings of most-popular dogs in — a statistic gathered every year by the American Kennel Club. The Great Dane is a fantastic option for families looking for a guardian pet — but you must have a large enough house and area for the Great Dane to run or be walked in. The Great Dane is a large dog of German origin — one of the largest dog breeds known to man — it came about from the crossbreeding of various types of Mastiff-type dogs, though no one is exactly sure why or how it came to be. However, they were routinely used as guardian animals for the estates of German aristocracy and travelling coaches. The history of the Great Dane stretches back centuries and while they are a product of crossbreeding, no one is entirely sure when the Great Dane was first crossed with another dog. However, crossbreeding of the Great Dane tends to take place with larger dogs for obvious physiological reasons. One of the most important things that you do before owning a dog is to research their temperamental differences and what potential temperaments of your adopted dog might be. Failure to do your research could mean that you are forced to return your dog to the animal shelter or veterinary clinic from whence they came, causing unnecessary pain and trauma to you and the dog. However, a mix of these two canines is still relatively new. The Corgi and Boxer mix is the result of the increasingly popular designer dogs produced in order to get the best of both parent breeds. Hybrid canines have been in high demand in the last two decades because of their uniqueness. However, there are high chances that some of the designer doggies that were bred accidentally are growing up in shelters and waiting for their future owner. Puppy mills care only about profit, and they raise puppies in inhumane conditions. Corgis Corgis have been a popular dog breed for a long time. Since then, the breed has physically changed, but some of its personality traits are still recognizable in its behavior. This dog breed was divided into two groups in the s: the Pembroke Corgis , and the Cardigans. The main reason for the division was their origin. Although they were considered to be the same breed at one point, and were crossbred because of it, these two canine types have different ancestry. While the Cardigans belonged to the Finnish and Spitz types of dogs, the ancestors of the Pembrokes were the Terkel canines. Their ancestors, Bullenbeissers, were popular in Germany and the rest of Europe as hunting canines that were used in hunts for deer, bears, and wild boar. The Boxer was introduced as the crossbreed of Bullenbeisssers and Bulldogs, mastiffs, and the German Corgis. The primary purpose of crossbreeding was to create a type of canine that would be a good working dog. Boxers later proved themselves as hard workers in military service during World Wars. However, these doggies are also known as big cuddlers and great family pets, which is their primary purpose nowadays. Boxers are great as show dogs, guard canines, and fiercely loyal family members. Corgi Boxer Mix This type of canine was created by breeding male Corgi dogs and female Boxer canines. The crossbred pups are great furry friends, awesome hikers, curious adventurers, and loyal companions. Essentially, the Corgi Boxer crossbreed has inherited many traits from these two breeds, which will be discussed in detail later in the article. Corgi Boxer Mix Appearance Photo from: aprettycoolplantgirl The appearance of these canines depends on the genes they inherit from their parent breeds. The combination of coat, height, and other physical characteristics might differ for each crossbred pup, depending on which side they take. One thing is for sure; your sweet pup will turn into a muscular adult dog with a solid and sturdy frame that both ancestors share. The most important thing that every Corgi Boxer mix owner should do is offer firm guidance to these canines. Exercise Both parents of this interesting dog breed are known as working canines and guard dogs that are very energetic and active. Their descendants have similar energy, which is why they should be taken out for walks regularly. A big yard or a dog park near your home will ensure your puppy is healthy and happy. These doggies are great protectors, and they will do everything to protect their owners and the property. Aggression These doggies have a high energy level, and they might display a specific type of aggression. The main reason for that is the temperament of the parent breed. Mixed breeds usually have attributes of both ancestors, but some traits are always inherited from one side. Pembroke Welsh Corgis might be little, but they do show specific aggressive behavior that is a consequence of their herding history. If the mix of these two canines shows aggression, it might result from the parent gene or bad treatment from the breeder. Their amiable personality and great interaction with people are suitable bases for family life. The Boxer in them might wake up from time to time, which will turn the crossbreed into an extremely energetic canine. The most common symptoms of this condition are seizures or short episodes that can be pretty painful to watch, especially for the owner. Degenerative Myelopathy. This condition is quite common among many dog breeds, including Boxers and Corgis. A dog with hip dysplasia feels a lot of pain and is unable to walk without limping on its back legs. To decrease the chances of hip dysplasia, make sure you get your puppy from a reputable breeder. Unfortunately, some Corgi Boxer crossbreeds might also suffer from this dangerous illness. Disadvantages Owning a cross of certain breeds sounds exciting, especially because you never know what you might expect. However, unpredictability might not always be a good thing. Essentially, getting a mixed-breed puppy can be quite a surprise in a positive and negative way. Mixed breeds can inherit health issues from one or both parent breeds, depending on the dominance of the genes. Some dog owners find pet insurance a good option in order to prevent any negative surprises. These pooches require lots of exercise because they might inherit a medium to a high prey drive as their ancestors. Therefore, the Corgi Boxer crossbreed might not suit older adults or families with babies. A Boxer Corgi mix will enjoy long walks with the family, but will require more activities. The main downside of getting a pup from such places is that most pet stores get puppies from un-reputable breeders and puppy mills. Places like puppy mills put profit over the health of their canines. Most dogs in these facilities are raised in an unhealthy environment without proper care, health screenings, or training. Certain places sell pups that result from accidental breeding, known as backyard breeders. Life Span Did You Know? While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. The Dalmatian is thought to be a mysterious breed because their history is relatively unknown. The Dalmatian is a unique-looking breed that has gone through a large range of popularity in North America. They originally hail from the country of Dalmatia, which was in the Mediterranean. It is part of Croatia and is a region along the sea and some islands in the Adriatic Sea. Most people do not know much about the Dalmatian beyond what they seem to be in the movies. They are most noteworthy for their athleticism. They are an agile breed that can build up quite a bit of speed and endurance. Dalmatians have always been hard workers and have been used in a wide variety of roles. They have been hunters, war dogs, herding pups, protectors, and draft dogs. They are primarily known as being a companion to firefighters nowadays because they are extremely loyal and fearless. Their popularity has ranged. When they were first introduced to America, they quickly grew in popularity because they looked so unique. However, in the s, more and more breeds started making their way to American shores, and the Dalmatian became less popular. Dalmatians need plenty of time with their family or caretakers. They bond strongly and cannot be left alone for long at all. They are also active and need quite plenty of daily activity to stay well behaved. Golden Retrievers originally come from Scotland. Golden Retrievers have remained one of the most popular breeds in North America for many years. Most of this is because of their charming personality and laidback characteristics. These beautiful dogs originate from Scotland, having been bred by Lord Tweddmouth in the s. He was a viscount who ended up adopting a dog named Nous. This puppy was young and yellow and had wavy hair all over. Interestingly, Nous came from a litter of black puppies. Lord Tweedmouth began to breed Nous by crossing the dog with a Tweed Water Spaniel, a breed that has since become extinct. The AKC recognized the Golden Retriever in , and they currently rank number three in overall popularity compared to the other breeds recognized by the AKC now. Goldmatians, like any hybrid, is a mix of both of their parents. Both the Golden Retriever and the Dalmatian are devoted dogs who need plenty of time with their family. The Goldmatian inherits all of this and requires plenty of time spent with their humans. They are not incredibly hyper dogs, but they do need plenty of activity to stay satisfied from day to day. They can be quite rambunctious, especially as puppies. These dogs are brilliant, inheriting smarts from both sides of the family. This intelligence can make them somewhat difficult to train if they decide to be stubborn. It can also get them into trouble if they are left to their own devices for too long. Are Goldmatians Good for Families? Dalmatian Golden Retriever Mixes are gentle-natured and quickly learn where it is appropriate to be rambunctious and where it is best to remain calm. If they are socialized early on, they will do well around both kids and adults. Around strangers, they will bark loudly but typically behave in a non-aggressive manner. They need to receive socialization early on to understand how to behave well around other animals. They like to play around and have fun, so they often do better in a home with more than one dog. Around other animals, such as cats or rodents, observe them because they have a higher prey drive. If they take after their Dalmatian parent, a Dalmatian Mix is likely to be a loyal, athletic, and energetic dog that loves their families. Dalmatians tend to be loving and loyal dogs that get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They tend to be loving and affectionate with their families and more reserved around strangers. Should a Dalmatian Mix take after their Dalmatian parent, you should be able to expect a similar temperament from them. You will still want to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed so you know what other traits could be in the mix. You can also meet the mother in-person to see the temperament she has and the manners she is modeling for her puppies. They do much better in homes with yards where they can run. They are sensitive to heat and may get cold easier in the winter than breeds with a thick coat. This makes them a moderately adaptable dog breed. If the other parent breed is similar, then you should be able to expect the same level of adaptability from a Dalmatian Mix. But, you still want to talk to the breeder about them as the other parent breed could introduce other quirks that could affect adaptability. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds. However, they could inherit any combination of them or all of them from one or both parents. From the Dalmatian side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Dalmatian Mix include kidney stones, deafness, elbow dysplasia, and hip dysplasia. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. Dalmatians are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. Generally, they are a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels. But, their high energy and tendency to get bored can be difficult for first-time dog owners to handle alone. Because of this, puppy training classes are recommended. They could have traits that could make a Dalmatian Mix easier or more difficult to train. You will want to be prepared for the possibility of needing training classes either way. A mixed-breed dog can inherit a coat that is similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a mix of both of them. Should they inherit the Dalmation coat, it will shed a little year-round, require weekly brushing, and need only a bath occasionally. It all depends on how quickly their nails grow. Because gum disease often leads to other health issues and is such a common problem for dogs, practicing good dental care for dogs throughout their lives is essential. A Dalmatian is a high-energy dog breed. They require daily walks plus time to run and other activities to stay happy and healthy. If the other parent is also a high-energy dog breed, then you can expect a Dalmatian Mix to be the same. Even if the other parent breed has a lower energy level, you will need to be prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog with a Dalmatian Mix. Dalmatians are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed could affect this, so you need to ask the breeder about them and pay close attention to which breed is the mother. A Dalmatian generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span in a Dalmatian Mix. Featured Dalmatian Mix Article. Life Span Did You Know? There are several benefits of puppy training classes aside from just training, so they can be a good idea no matter your experience with dogs. Trimming nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long and causing issues. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet as needed, can help prevent dental diseases later in life. Built for running ahead of the horse carriages of firehouses to clear the way, the Dalmatian is athletic and has a high energy level. They are one of the most active dog breeds and require daily walks and plenty of exercise to remain happy and healthy. They can even keep up with you when you are on a bike! However, it is important to keep activities low-impact while puppies are still growing. Their joints and bones are still developing within the first two years of their life and doing too much too soon can damage developing bones. A fully-grown Dalmatian usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Dalmatians generally live for years on average. When Dalmatian puppies are born, they do not have spots. Their spots start to develop when they are around weeks old. Dals will continue to develop spots slowly throughout their lives, but will have most of their spots after about a month. Life Span Did You Know? The American Bulldog is a descendant of a generic bulldog type of dog breed brought into the region that is now the Southern United States by working-class immigrants many years ago. These were all-around working dogs used by small farmers and ranchers for several tasks around the farm. They were often found working as catch dogs, stock dogs, and overall farm guardians. When feral pigs were introduced to the New World, they had no natural predators and the population quickly grew out of control. In addition to their farm duties, the settlers found the bulldog-type dog to be the best solution they had for dealing with it. So, the bulldog continued to thrive, especially in the South. Johnson and Alan Scott that we have what we know today as the American Bulldog. Modern American Bulldogs can still be found working as all-around utility dogs, farm dogs, catch dogs, cattle drovers, and more. They can also be found competing in dog sports, working as a guardian, police, or military dog, and are also popular as a family pet. This dog breed is a sweetheart with a gentle, fun-loving nature. The American Bulldog is affectionate and adores their families. They also love children and tend to be good with other animals. American Bulldogs can have a high prey drive, so you will want to make sure you introduce and socialize them properly with other small animals in the household. Due to their protective nature, they can be aloof towards strangers and strange dogs, especially when they are younger. Early socialization can help them be more comfortable navigating their guardian instincts. Overall, this dog breed tends to be confident, social, and are most at ease and relaxed when they are with the people they love. American Bulldogs are an emotional dog breed and thrives on human attention and affection, so they tend to bond strongly with their owners and may come across as clingy sometimes. They will also often convince themselves that they are lap dogs regardless of their size, so make sure you are ready for a lot of love and cuddles with your American Bulldog, drool and all! The American Bulldog is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They are strong, high-energy working dogs that love being around their favorite humans. This makes them better suited to larger homes with space for them to run. They are not generally a good fit for apartment living, but they can adapt as long as they get more than enough exercise and attention. Because they do tend to bond strongly with their owners and want to be near them, they do not tend to do well with long periods of time alone. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold, but can adapt to well to most climates. There are some health issues that can be found in specific genetic lines and are not common to the breed overall, but these can be ruled out with genetic tests. Some potential health conditions to be aware of in general with the American Bulldog include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid disorders, kidney disorders, bone cancer, and eye-related issues like ectropion, entropion, and cherry eye. Talking to the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and asking to see any health clearances can help allay potential concerns. American Bulldogs are highly trainable and eager to please, so they are a good fit for owners of any experience level, including first-time dog owners. They can have a stubborn streak, so a first-time dog owner may want to consider enrolling in puppy training classes. As with any dog breed, early and ongoing training and socialization are important for your American Bulldog puppy to grow into a well-rounded, and a well-behaved, dog. This dog breed has a short coat that is generally smooth. Common coat colors are white and predominately white with patches of brindle, black, or red. More coat color patterns are emerging and becoming more common like all shades of brindle, fawn, brown, red, and more. The American Bulldog is relatively low maintenance and easy to groom and they are light to moderate shedders. They only require a bath as needed. But, you will need to be prepared to deal with some extra drool! Floppy ears tend to trap moisture and dirt, which can lead to ear infections. The ideal dental care for dogs is using an enzyme toothpaste or brushing their teeth every day. Dental hygiene chews or treats, a specially-formulated dental care diet, and more can be used to supplement your dental care efforts. The American Bulldog is an athletic and high-energy dog breed. They love daily walks and plenty of playtime outside. They may even enjoy plenty of other activities with you like swimming, hiking , and more. With their working dog background, this dog breed does need a job to do in order to stay happy and healthy. What is a similar breed to a Pug? Introduction Pugs are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United Kingdom, originally from ancient China with their famed short muzzle and allegedly by owners of pugs! What else can we say to start? As a result, many people may be wondering about the purchase price of a Pug. But often people ask why are pugs so expensive? How much is this breed going to set you back if you want to buy it from a breeder or purchase it from an animal shelter? The answer might surprise you! We will also explore pug insurance and why this type of protection can be smart for your new family member. How much should you pay for a Pug? The cost you will be expected to pay for a pug largely depends on the area and quality of your breeder. What do pugs cost? Pug price will go up if you purchase your dog from a reputable breeder. Puppy farms may be a cheaper option but are never recommended as they are known to breed unhealthy dogs in very poor conditions. If you buy your pug puppy from good pug breeders they will more likely be healthy puppies and cost you less down the line on insurance — as well as having a happier life. Buying pedigree pugs also know as a purebred pug can fluctuate in price to be more or less expensive than a mixed dog however, they are more likely to develop health problems as they have less genetic diversity. How long do Pugs live? Most pugs will have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. This means you should really think about the long term when you are weighing up your puppy price tag. Unfortunately pugs are known for health problems they can run into some breathing problems early on, this can affect average lifetime costs which is why you may want to consider purchasing pet insurance. Health issues can potentially be very expensive for your dog and can make pugs so expensive over their lifetime, even with older retired pugs. And remember, as our insurance is payable monthly, it helps with your household finances. How much is a puppy vaccination? Dog owners should make sure their Pug puppy receives all of its relevant health tests including getting vaccinated early on. If you get your Pug from a reputable breeder it may have already received its relevant vaccinations. Your pug should receive its vaccinations as a puppy , you may want to take it for a vet check to see which vaccinations it will require. Pet insurance for Pug Puppies So how much does a Pug insurance cost? When you try to buy a Pug another cost factor you should consider is pet insurance. Whether you have a pug puppy or an adult pug can change the price due to the increased risk of health issues at a later age. Postcode can also affect pug cost as some areas are safer than others for dogs and some have more or less expensive vets which can affect your premium. Pug insurance can be expensive depending on your area and the risk of illness for the dog. As pugs do have common breed problems such as pug dog encephalitis or brachycephalic dogs then this will have an effect on how much does a pug insurance policy cost. Pug insurance is more expensive if you have an older Pug or one that has health problems. Is my Pug from a puppy farm? Pet quality should be seen as more important than Pug price when buying puppies. A well-bred pug will live a longer and happier life than one from a puppy farm. To spot a Pug from a puppy farm you should look out for signs of illness or the breeder having a large number of dogs at the same time. Always buy a Pug from a reputable breeder as health conditions will get you expensive vet bills in the future which will overshadow potentially getting a cheaper dog. The pug owner should be able to give you a birth certificate and you should have a good idea about health conditions from the family it came from. While it may be harder with reputable breeders because their dogs will have small litters, if you want health and happy pugs from when they are a puppy then as with other pets use a reputable breeder. They are cruel and help to spread disease. Grooming my Pug When you receive your new dog you will need to make sure it is well looked after and groomed well. To groom your puppies you may want to consider buying a Pug brush. Pugs have short hair but they need to still be brushed regularly. A pug dog can have a lot of hairballs so you will want to brush them more often than dogs with smooth hair. You should also use the right type of shampoo for your puppy as some may not suit its sensitive skin or cause an allergic reaction. Exercising my Pug Pugs are not very active dogs, they are fine with a short walk in the morning but do not want you to overdo it. Instead, invest your time into playing games like fetch or tug of war which will get their energy out and help them burn some calories. Pug feeding guide A Pug puppy will require a different amount of food to adult dogs so the amount of food can vary greatly. Many breeders will be able to tell you how much to feed your dog but you can also ask a vet if you want to make sure. Generally, you should feed little dogs at least twice a day with some good quality dog food. Pug monthly cost will largely be determined by how much food your particular dog breed needs. What colours can a Pug be A pug can come in many colours, the most common colours are black or fawn including apricot fawn. You can also get them in silver, apricot and white but this is not very common. How much a pug costs will depend on which colour you choose! Black Pugs are often smaller dogs then a fawn Pug, they also have only one coat where a fawn may have two coats. Living costs of a Pug The living costs of a baby Pug can differentiate from the costs of big dogs. You will be expected to pay for Grooming tools like a brush and washing materials. Some purebred puppies have a higher risk of developing health conditions as pedagree normally has less differentiation in genes. Common Pug health problems Pug puppies can run into difficulty early on in their lives, as they can have difficulties with breathing and this is called Brachycephalic syndrome. Does a reputable breeder generally run health checks? Yes, and they should be willing to share lots of details about the dog breed and its family history. A pedigree breed may be part of the negotiations of how much do pugs cost. Are Pugs good pets? Pugs are a very popular breed in the UK, due to their easygoing nature pug puppies can fit into any home. Pugs are also very loyal and protective of their family, so they are very good with children. Pugs need lots of exercise because they can be lazy but at least once a day What is a similar breed to a Pug? If your not looking to buy a Pug and instead want something similar why not look at French Bulldogs , they are similar in appearance and temperament. French bulldogs also need lots of exercise but can be slightly more stubborn. Frenchies are sometimes compared to bat because of their large ears. If french bulldogs interest you more we also offer insurance cover on them too! Click here for our french bulldog insurance. Click here to learn more about how much french bulldogs cost. When will my Pug become an adult? Baby pugs are cute, but they quickly turn into larger older pugs. Pugs are typically considered as an adult at one year old. Pugs will also grow until three years of age. They need to be taught the basics including how to sit, stay and come. Some reputable breeders will give their Pugs basic training before handing them over. Conclusion While the cost of pet insurance can be expensive, it is worth considering. Black, silver, apricot or fawn, with black muzzle and ears Size Height: 25 cm — 30 cm Weight: 6. Originally bred to be a lap dog, these small but sturdy dogs are known for their large round heads, large, protruding eyes, short noses and deep and distinct face wrinkles. These wrinkled brows also result in very humanised facial expressions like happiness, curiosity and surprise. Pugs come in three colours, silver, apricot with a black muzzle and ears or all black. They also have high set, tightly curled tails and fine, smooth, glossy coats. Pugs are known for their stubborn personalities and are often difficult to train. They carry themselves with dignity and play well with others but are also happy being the only pooch in your family. These dogs are also incredibly adaptable and make a great house pet. They can be happy in the city or the countryside and make great companions for both children and older people because of their sturdy bodies and loving nature. Pugs may be playful, but as a typically sedentary dog, they are happy to just sit in your lap or receive a nice cuddle. It is typically easy for pugs to get along with your other pets, making them a great addition to your family. Pugs love their food and will overeat if you let them. The breed is prone to becoming overweight, so it is important to monitor their diet and exercise carefully. Mild climates are best for them, making the UK a perfect home for your new furry friend. Pugs have short fur, but they have what is called a double coat. This also means that pugs shed quite a lot and require a lot of grooming. Brushing their coat as regularly as every three days with a soft bristle comb can help this. Bath time with your pug Pugs should be bathed once every three to four weeks. You should however clean their ears , eyes, and in between their wrinkles multiple times a week. Their wrinkles, as adorable as they may be, are prone to yeast infections. How much exercise does a pug need? However, this is a lively and intelligent breed, so pugs do need both physical and mental stimulation throughout the day. Pugs are a brachycephalic breed and prone to heat sensitivity and should be observed for heatstroke during hot weather. Your pug should not be exercised during the hottest part of the day, so exercising either early morning or late evening time is advisable. How much does a pug cost? The big price range is largely due to differing demands depending on fur colour, size, and age. As puppies are more in demand, they are more expensive. This also applies to teacup pugs; these small dogs are highly sought after for their small frames. The apricot coloured pugs with black muzzles and ears are the most popular coat colour and as a result, breeders will typically charge more for them as well. For Pedigree dogs such as pugs, it is important to find a reputable breeder. This means your dog will have been bred ethically and for good health rather than trendy physical features. What health problems can a pug experience? This causes folds and wrinkles which obstructs the airways. They will breathe heavily and noisily. Pain when swallowing and regurgitating food can also be symptoms. Surgery to remove the excess tissue is the only way to treat BAOS. The problem can be managed by keeping the dog at a healthy weight. Hemivertebrae A hemivertebra is a deformed vertebra backbone , which is caused by the fusing of two or more vertebrae, or it develops unevenly. This causes a wedging effect that twists and compresses the spine. Signs of the condition include weakness of hind limbs, pain and incontinence. Some dogs can live with hemivertebrae and not experience any of these symptoms. Rest and anti-inflammatories can be helpful for mild cases. Severe cases will need surgery to relieve the compression on the spinal cord. Keratoconjunctivitis Dry eye This condition develops when there is a problem with the tear glands. A lack of tears causes dry eyes, which are sore and often become infected or damaged. Treatments vary but they all aim to prevent the eyes from drying out. If left untreated, scarring and pigmentation will occur, which can lead to blindness. Affected dogs will hop rather than use the affected leg and are prone to other knee-related injuries. In some cases, the problem is temporary, but usually surgery is needed to correct the alignment. Looking to buy a new Pug? Explore our Pug insurance policies today. Caring for your Pug Pugs can be highly entertaining dogs due to their big personalities and clownish nature. They generally do well in family environments where they have lots of company all of the time as they love to spend time with everybody. Pugs and barking As with any dog, your Pug is likely to make noise in one form or another. How much your dog barks will be down to them as an individual. Training and socialisation When it comes to training Pugs, although they are a clever breed they can also be very strong willed. Training needs to be ongoing and firm but fair. You can start positive, reward-based training from day one, whether you get your Pug old or young. Exercise Pugs can be prone to gaining weight that can make breathing problems worse, so it is important to keep them active and avoid any weight gain. Your Pug will need up to an hour of exercise a day. This should include shorter walks, with extra playtime and lots of brain-stimulating activities. Several shorter walks throughout the day can help to stop them from becoming too tired or overheated, which is a great way to keep them active throughout the day. Keep a close eye on your Pug as they can tire easily due to their difficulties getting enough oxygen. As soon as you start to notice them struggling to breathe, stop and make sure they get enough of a rest. You will also need to avoid exercising them in the heat as this can cause even more problems since they can be at higher risk of heatstroke. Grooming Even though their coats are short, Pugs can still shed loads. Luckily, they tend to love being groomed as it means a lot of attention all on them. Pay close attention to the folds in their skin, as these are the perfect breeding ground for bacterial and fungal infections if left damp. You can teach your Pug from an early age to love tooth brushing and nail clipping so you can keep those pearly whites and paws in great condition. Pugs and children Pugs adore company and really love people of all ages. They often get on well with children, especially if the Pug loves to play. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and play with dogs with care and kindness, to prevent any issues. Always supervise children and vulnerable people with your Pug and make sure you can recognise the signs of unhappiness or anxiety in your dog to help avoid any conflicts. Pugs and other pets Pugs are known for getting along well with other pets and dogs. Introductions still need to be done carefully, though, just in case. Good, kind training will also help them become well-rounded dogs that keep calm in new situations. Your vet or vet nurse will be able to tell you how much your dog should be eating. If you give your dog an occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily food allowance. You should try to feed your dog at the same time every day to get them into a routine. Remember to leave a gap after eating and before exercising. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. These breeders must do extra health tests and meet higher standards for breeding. See our advice on what you need to know about flat faced pets and how to choose a healthier pedigree pet. Set-up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, some centres will vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around six months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will have already neutered the dogs they rehome where appropriate. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. Keep in mind that all these will need to be replaced with wear or if your dog outgrows them! Ongoing costs Food. Preventive healthcare — budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catching any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments. Check if your vet offers a health care plan as this can help spread the cost throughout the year. Accessories — including lots of poo bags, replacing worn toys and grooming accessories, buying doggy toothpaste and any other extras they might need. Other costs Training — basic training is very important and dogs can benefit from formal classes. Some dogs may have, or develop, behavioural problems which might need professional management. Boarding — you may also need to budget for boarding or dog sitting costs if you are planning to go away from home on holiday. If you are having difficulty with veterinary costs, you can check if you are eligible for treatment at PDSA here. A group of Pugs is called a grumble! Pugs are an ancient breed, dating back to Ancient China where they were bred for Emperors. Pugs were bred to be companions, which is why they love people so much. Getting a Pug Do plenty of research before you get a Pug. Although they are loveable and friendly, they are sadly likely to get a lot of health issues more so than many other breeds. Rehoming centres There are plenty of rescue centres across the country where you may find a Pug. Breed-specific rescues specialising in Pugs are out there too. Good rescue centres should let you know of any existing health and behaviour problems. Breeders If you buy from a breeder, make sure your puppy will have been well socialised and have all necessary health checks and vaccinations. We recommend looking for a Kennel Club Assured breeder as they meet higher standards. Not sure if a Pug is the right pet for you?

In the first half of the twentieth century, German cavalry officer Max von Stephanitz, created the German Shepherd Dog using a variety of German sheepdogs as his foundation stock. Initially, color was not considered as long as the dog demonstrated working ability. During the late 30's, however, the white color fell into disfavor. There were, however, always breeders who appreciated the beauty of the white dogs and who continued to breed them. Because of their exclusion from most German Shepherd Dog breeding programs, the whites rather quickly evolved into a distinct type, and eventually into a separate breed. Character The White Shepherd has a distinct personality marked by self-confidence. The White Shepherd is poised, but when the situation demands, is eager and alert, ready to serve in any capacity. The White Shepherd is highly intelligent, energetic, hard working, curious, and loyal. The character of the White Shepherd is gentler and mellower than that of the German Shepherd Dog, but when necessary, he is very willing and capable to protect his family. Temperament White Shepherds demonstrate both herding and protective instincts. The White Shepherd will attempt to perform the task of herding on anything and everything that moves. With those he knows, the White Shepherd is open and friendly. With strangers, he is observant and cautious but not apprehensive. The White Shepherd thrives on human interaction from their family and does not like to be left alone for extended periods of time. They are playful, enthusiastic and eager to please. Because of their intense loyalty and love of children they make outstanding family dogs. Care The White Shepherd sheds bits of hair constantly with seasonal heavy shedding. They require daily brushing to minimize loose hair. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary; over bathing can cause skin irritation from oil depletion. Check ears and trim nails regularly. White Shepherds may be prone to such health issues as elbow and hip dysplasia, bloat, allergies, and digestive problems. Coat The White Shepherd has a weather-resistant double coat. The outer coat can be short or long and is dense and straight. The undercoat is short, thick, and fine in texture. At the neck, the coat may be slightly longer and heavier, particularly in males. The hair on the back of the legs is slightly longer than on the front. The coat on the rump and underside of the tail is longer and thicker than the body coat. The head and ears are covered with a smooth, somewhat softer hair while the hair covering the legs and paws has a harsher texture. This breed continuously sheds with seasonal heavy shedding. Training The White Shepherd requires early socialization and obedience training. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. This breed is obedient, eager to please and quick to learn. Training must be done with respect, firmness, fairness, reward, and consistency. Activity This breed is happiest when given a job to do. They require daily exercise and enjoy leashed walks, family play sessions, and a large safely fenced area to romp and run freely in. Some may do okay in an apartment or condominium dwelling provided they are given sufficient exercise, stimulation, and attention. However, white-coated German Shepherds were removed from the breed standard in so these pale-coated dogs could no longer be registered with the club. The outline of the White Shepherd is made up of smooth curves rather than angles. Gender differences are readily apparent. Working dogs are not to be penalized under any conditions for scars or blemishes that are due to occupational injuries. The White Shepherd has a distinct personality marked by self-confidence. The White Shepherd is poised, but when the situation demands, is eager and alert, ready to serve in any capacity. White Shepherds demonstrate both herding and protective instincts. With those he knows, the White Shepherd is open and friendly. With strangers, he is observant and may be somewhat aloof but not apprehensive. Timidity in a mature dog or aggressive behavior is not typical of this breed and should be severely penalized. The organization go on to add that Echo Dogs provide them with a safe, secure foster home, where they receive necessary veterinary care and behavioral training and match them with families that are committed to providing a safe, loving home environment for their canine family member. Other then that if you are looking for a breeder make sure you do some research. I have grown up with the standard colour German Shepherd my entire 26 years of life and when I got my first White German Shepherd I did notice a slight difference. I made sure to do my research on the breed, what the dog needs. I do not recommend getting any type of German Shepherd if you are not ready for the hard work they require. They are very hard work sometimes and very stubborn but also so so rewarding. Be smart about the dog you choose to bring home and make sure their personality matches your lifestyle. Alyssa explained roughly how much she paid for her White German Shepherd called Lumi. The cost of White Shepherds can vary quite a bit, especially when taking location into consideration. Other factors to consider are exercise which could be a pro or a con. Will you have enough time to give your White German Shepherd sufficient exercise or will you need the help of a dog walker. Do you work at an office? Anything Else To Consider? You could always start your search for a White German Shepherd by visiting a local rescue organization or finding a dedicated White German Shepherd rescue such as Echo Dogs. Temperament: Loyal, intelligent, protective, and energetic Coat: Double-coated Color: White or cream in color Long coat is more common A brief history of the White German Shepherd The White German Shepherd is a breed mentioned repeatedly in literature, where it dates back to before the birth of Jesus Christ. It was first mentioned by the Roman historian, Marcus Terentius in BC, who described the dog as an excellent dog for shepherds. Their white coat blended in with the school of sheep and makes it hard for wolves and coyotes to distinguish it. Their coat is either in white or cream. They are double-coated with the undercoat being dense and fine in texture, and the outer coat being thick and straight. This double coat keeps him warm and protected from the elements. The White German Shepherds have large erect ears and their eyes are either dark brown or black in color. Their noses are black as a puppy and gradually turn pink when they reach adulthood, while some remain black. The recessive gene that make them white The gene that makes the White German Shepherd white is a recessive gene. A white pup only occurs when both parents carry the recessive gene which makes them white. If two non-white dogs with recessive genes produce a litter, they too could have a small number of white pups, but only if the parent both carry the recessive gene. Temperament The White German Shepherds are said to be more sociable and calmer. They can make a great family pet, especially good with kids. The White German Shepherds are also known to be very affectionate with and protective of their families. They are very sociable, meaning they are not afraid to meet new people, dogs, or other animals. Like other German Shepherds, they also suffer from Elbow and Hip Dysplasia more frequently than other breeds of dogs. Yet, these are complications that are common in large dogs. During WWII, the White German Shepherds were blamed for all problems the colored German Shepherds were suffering from aggressive behavior, diseases, light-skinned — which was deemed as the consequence of too much inbreeding. But this is not true. Today, science and breeding history have proven that the white recessive gene masks the actual color of the dog, making them appear white, and brings along no health problems: in other words, the gene which causes white does not itself cause any other defect. They are otherwise genetically identical to colored German Shepherds. Further Questions 1. Is the White German Shepherd rare? A white pup only occurs when both parents carry the recessive gene, which makes them white. Given their rarity, White German Shepherd puppies are more expensive than colored ones. Although proven to be genetically identical to colored German Shepherds, the White German Shepherd is recognized as a separate breed. And there is no scientific proof showing white German Shepherds have poorer health or temperament than colored GSDs. Yet, the White German Shepherds do face the same health issues as the colored GSDs, the major concern being hip and elbow dysplasia. More on the White German Shepherd. If you are contemplating making the white German Shepherd part of your family, you may wonder whether they are a mix or purebred. White German Shepherds are purebred. They are the progeny of the first German Shepherd bred in Germany in the late s and developed to herd sheep and other livestock. Often, herders preferred the white coat, as it was easy to recognize them from the darker European wolves. They were not bred to be companion animals; instead, they were bred to be working dogs. Their olfactory scent, intellect, work ethic, strength, bravery, versatility, loyalty, and speed made them ideal farm dogs. They were responsible for not only herding but defending flocks from predators. The German Shepherd breed quickly grew in popularity before the s and spread to other countries. It is said that the white-coated German Shepherd was bred specifically by the kennels of the then Queen of Hapsburg, Alsace-Lorraine, Austria, as she wanted them to match the white horses that pulled her carriage. Sadly, the purebred white German Shepherd began to be considered a flaw by the Nazi regime in the s, who saw the white coat as an undesirable characteristic and blamed it for causing coat paling across all colors and diseases. They were subsequently excluded from breeding and disqualified from the breed standard. These white-coated dogs have descendants who can trace their lineage back to the white GSDs of the early s. Many myths exist about white-coated German Shepherds and the gene that determines their coat color. When some people see them, they think they are an albino. But are they? White German Shepherds are not albino. Albinos lack all pigment, whereas white German Shepherds have black noses, black pigment around their mouths, black paw pads, and brown eyes. Their eye rims and nails also have dark skin. The white gene is recessive and is only responsible for coat color. Although the albino can exist in German Shepherds, it is extremely rare. This genetic mutation causes a complete absence of pigmentation. Most albino dogs will have skin that appears pink around their eyes, giving the appearance of pink eyes when their eyes will usually be blue in color. You will also be able to spot the pink nose easily. What Causes a White German Shepherd? German Shepherds with all-white coats have always been present in litters. However, now that you know they are not albinos, what exactly causes their beautiful white coats? The gene is only related to coat color and has nothing to do with health or temperament. The easiest way to explain it is that the white gene is a recessive gene that works independently of all other color genes. If a dog has two copies of that gene switched on, the white hides the color. To guarantee an all-white litter, two white GSDs will need to be bred. Are White German Shepherds Rare? The discrimination against the white German Shepherd by Nazi Germany quickly spread to breeders elsewhere. Breeders also wrongly believed they were inferior and had a genetic fault. White German Shepherds are rarer than the colored variety as only two white German Shepherds are guaranteed to produce all-white puppies. However, they are not too rare, and if two non-whites both have the white recessive gene, a small percentage of the litter may be white. A reputable and experienced breeder will confidently breed two white German Shepherds to produce a litter of purebred, fluffy white German Shepherd puppies, as long as the demand is there. The main purpose of the American Kennel Club is to maintain a pedigree registry of purebred dogs. However, there is often confusion around the white German Shepherd, albeit purebred. The confusion is that white dogs are disqualified from the conformation ring, but they can still participate in herding, tracking, and obedience. The official breed standard prefers strong, rich colors. Although the UK Kennel Club recognizes the white German Shepherd, they state they are highly undesirable for conformation. This is where things start to get a little complicated! Allow me to elaborate… Advances in science proved that the white recessive gene did not cause albinoism. Scientists also proved that the white German Shepherd was not accountable for any other health issues or the paling of color-coated dogs. In the late s and s, supporters of the white German Shepherd Dog began to form their own breed clubs and registries. So theoretically speaking, the white German Shepherd and the White Shepherd are now considered different breeds recognized by different organizations with separate breed standards: The white German Shepherd is recognized by the American Kennel Club although it is disqualified from showing and the UK Kennel Club. In North America, opinions about whether the purebred white German Shepherd should be considered a different breed from the White Shepherd are still divided. Apart from the color of their fur, the white German Shepherd Dog looks almost identical to any other breed variety. White German Shepherd puppies do not change color. The same goes for black German Shepherds, whose color is also caused by a recessive gene. If pups are born all black, they will remain all black. The white German Shepherd is truly a stunning-looking dog, and often heads will turn to look at its gorgeous coat and features. White German Shepherds have the same appearance as other varieties, apart from their all-white coats. They are medium-large sized with a muscular and athletic build. The GSD is double-coated, having a low-set bushy tail. A striking feature is their erect ears, with a noble head and a long muzzle. Fully grown white German Shepherd males are typically 24 to 26 inches tall, while females are generally 22 to 24 inches tall. When fully grown, males weigh 66—88 lbs 30—40 kg , and females weigh 49—71 lbs 22—32 kg. However, remember that each dog is unique, and sizes can vary. For example, my female is very tall and weighs 88lbs 40kg. The white German Shepherd has a double-coated, weather-resistant coat that is either medium or long in length. The undercoat is thick, and the outer coat has coarse, straight, or slightly wavy hairs that lie close to the body. White German Shepherds are good family dogs sharing the same temperament as the colored variety. They are intelligent, protective, loyal, affectionate, and easy to train. They will get along with children, other dogs, and even cats if introduced to them when young and properly trained. While the white German Shepherd makes a good family dog, they are high-energy, and you need to have lots of time and enthusiasm to socialize, exercise, and train them. Nonetheless, they are excellent with children and other family pets, especially if raised with them. The breed is keen to please its owners and enjoys having a job to do. This makes them enjoyable and easy to train. Basic obedience training should begin at a young age, preferably around eight weeks old, when you first bring the pup into your home. This is due to their undying love and loyalty. They need to be a part of the family and are prone to separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. White German Shepherds, like all varieties, are very active — exercise is essential to keep them out of mischief. They need at least two hours of regular physical activity every day. This should include various activities besides walking, such as hiking, off-leash running, flyball, agility, frisbee, and fetch. Mental stimulation is also essential, which includes playing games and having interactive or puzzle toys. This toy will keep your doggo entertained for hours and gets thousands of positive reviews. Without regular exercise and interaction, German Shepherds will display unwanted behavior such as chewing, biting, scratching, digging, whining, or barking. They can live outside but prefer to be inside with their family. Although they can do okay in a small house or apartment, a house with a yard is preferred, where they can run and burn off some energy. Allow me to share my experience; Willow is my first dog and is fantastic for all the family. Are White German Shepherds Protective? German Shepherds are often used in the police, military, search and rescue, and service or therapy dogs due to their versatility, bravery, loyalty, boundless energy, and easy trainability. But do they make good guard dogs, and are they protective? White German Shepherds are protective due to their natural guarding instincts. When faced with strangers, they can become nervous or suspicious and watch over their family, especially children. Early socialization and training are important to prevent any over-aggressiveness. Remember, they were originally bred to herd and protect livestock, so protecting their family is an instinctive characteristic of the breed. Are White German Shepherds Aggressive? There is a range of myths and misunderstandings that surround the GSD, no matter their color. In particular, many of these are based on fear, and culture or are caused due to inadequately trained dogs. This may cause you to wonder whether white German Shepherds are aggressive, especially if you want to raise one with your family. White German Shepherds are not aggressive if they are socialized early and are well-trained. They can become aggressive if provoked or mistreated. Since the GSD is often used for jobs that require them to be aggressive, it seems they have developed a reputation for being aggressive. They are large, athletic, and muscular dogs often used as guard dogs or in the police and military due to these characteristics and their high intelligence and protective nature. White German Shepherds can be trained to be aggressive towards strangers or certain individuals. However, a well-raised and socialized white German Shepherd has no reason to become aggressive. From someone that worked in law enforcement for almost 30 years and has experience with the breed, I can honestly say I never once saw an aggressive dog — except when commanded to be aggressive in the right situation. As long as you socialize and train your young pup, he will gain the trust and experience he needs with all new people and other dogs. This will allow him to react calmly and confidently to most situations he will encounter. Training a White German Shepherd is not any different from training other varieties of German Shepherds. White German Shepherds have the same temperament, intelligence, and trainability as other German Shepherd varieties. Here are some steps to help you train your White German Shepherd: Start with basic obedience training: Begin with basic commands like sit, stay, come, and heel. Use positive reinforcement techniques like treats and praise to encourage good behavior. Socialize your White German Shepherd: Expose your dog to different people, animals, and environments to help them become well-adjusted and confident. This can help prevent behavior problems like aggression and anxiety. Use positive reinforcement: Reward your White German Shepherd for good behavior with treats, praise, and playtime. Be consistent: Use the same commands and training techniques every time you work with your White German Shepherd. This will help them understand what is expected of them and prevent confusion. Use training aids: Consider using training aids like clickers, leashes, and collars to help reinforce good behavior and make training easier. Practice regularly: Consistent practice is key to successful training. Remember, training your White German Shepherd is a lifelong process. So, how much does a white German Shepherd cost on average? I obtained this price from the average of 4 breeders I contacted. Prices vary depending on various factors such as breeder reputation, demand, location, bloodline, litter size, and whether full breeding rights are included. These are the white German Shepherd breeders I contacted to get the prices of current litters. Some breeders will charge more if you want your pup to have AKC full breeding rights. Less - The White Shepherd is a medium-sized, well-balanced, muscular dog, slightly longer than tall, with a medium length, pure white coat, erect ears, and a low-set natural tail that normally reaches to the hock and is carried in a slight curve like a saber. The outline of the White Shepherd is made up of smooth curves rather than angles. Gender differences are readily apparent. Working dogs are not to be penalized under any conditions for scars or blemishes that are due to occupational injuries. The White Shepherd has a distinct personality marked by self-confidence. The breed is poised, but when the situation demands, they are eager, alert and ready to serve in any capacity. White Shepherds demonstrate both herding and protective instincts. They enjoy running, playing fetch or any activity with their human family. This is a joyful, active, intelligent and easy to train working dog with the ability to adapt and integrate to all kinds of social events and situations. Timidity in a mature dog or aggressive behavior is not typical of this breed. White Shepherds are very loyal and tend to be especially protective of the young of various species. With their playful and curious personalities, they make wonderful companions although some do have the tendency toward being quite vocal by exhibiting whining, grunting, moaning and sometimes howling. In the first half of the twentieth century, German cavalry officer Max von Stephanitz, created the German Shepherd Dog using a variety of German sheepdogs as his foundation stock. Initially, color was not considered as long as the dog demonstrated working ability. During the late 30s, however, the white color fell into disfavor. There were, however, always breeders who appreciated the beauty of the white dogs and who continued to breed them. Because of their exclusion from most German Shepherd Dog breeding programs, the whites rather quickly evolved into a distinct type, and eventually into a separate breed. Black and Silver Brown German Shepherds can have a variety of different coat types as well. Their coats may be short, dense and thick, fluffy, or long. Pure white, solid blue, and spotted German Shepherds are not considered purebred. If you are interested in adopting a White German Shepherd, you should think about what you want it to look like aesthetically. The White Shepherd is a mid-sized, muscular dog that is tall with a medium rating for length. Their ears are normally erect, and their coat is often pure white, although they may be spotted. The color of a White Shepherd ranges from light cream to a light biscuit tan, although the United Kennel Club suggests that pure white is the ideal color. White Shepherds have a weather-resistant double coat that features a close-lying and straight outer coat, coupled with a short, thick and fine undercoat. White German Shepherds can be traced back to Germany, as they share the same bloodline as common shepherds. Historically, German Shepherds were typically white or black and tan. White German Shepherds are different from standard German Shepherds in only one way, apart from their color. White German Shepherds are known to have longer, stiffer hair than standard German Shepherds. White Shepherds are white due to a recessive gene in their DNA. This is similar to the Black German Shepherd, as both have a unique recessive coat color gene. White Shepherds are simply German Shepherds that have a rare recessive gene. Therefore, it is possible for standard German Shepherds to give birth to White Shepherds. This is where White Shepherds originated. Although, it is important to note that the only way to breed an entirely solid litter of White Shepherds is by breeding two adult White Shepherds. On the other hand, if a White Shepherd is bred with a standard German Shepherd, the litter will contain a mixture of different colored puppies. The number of White Shepherds born in such a litter would depend on whether the standard German Shepherd parent holds the White Shepherd recessive gene. Interestingly enough, White Shepherds have their true color hidden, meaning that if you breed a White Shepherd with a non-white Shepherd, it is hard to determine what colors the puppies will be. White German Shepherds are not albino German Shepherds. Although White German Shepherds can be born as albinos, this is not the standard for the breed. Albino dogs have deficient pigmentation, which causes them to have pale skin, pink eyes, and uncolored hair. White Shepherds have pink or black skin, brown eyes, solid white fur, and colored noses. Although some people associate rare dog colors with poor health and temperament, this is not the case with White Shepherds. The recessive gene that is responsible for making German Shepherds white are not tied to any known diseases or syndromes. This means that White German Shepherds are prone to the same diseases and health issues as standard German Shepherds. Many people take advantage of these rare dogs because they come at a higher cost to the people who wish to adopt them. Some breeders will breed them because of their color and not care much for their health and wellbeing. This is why finding an ethical, reliable breeder should be your foremost objective when searching for your next White German Shepherd. Finding a reputable and responsible breeder may take time, but it is worthwhile. Black German Shepherds are rarer because, in order for a Black German Shepherd puppy to be born, both parents must have the recessive gene associated with solid black fur. Black German Shepherd The price is slightly lessened by the fact that two Black German Shepherds can be mated together to produce a solid litter of Black German Shepherds. If you are in the market for a Black German Shepherd, be prepared to pay more than you would for a White Shepherd or standard German Shepherd. Just make sure you choose a reputable breeder to ensure that the White Shepherd you adopt is healthy and ethically bred. Not to be confused with albino dogs, these stunning dogs have a pure white coat and a great temperament. They make excellent family pets for the right owners. You will have to go to a breeder to get your White German Shepherd puppies. A typically colored German Shepherd would be less expensive. White German Shepherds appear randomly in normal German Shepherd litters or by intentional breeding practices. The Nazis erroneously labeled the White German Shepherd as albino German Shepherds, and thus of inferior genetics, which was not true in the slightest. The breed is still the subject of some controversy, however. Despite the fact that the White German Shepherd is simply a German Shepherd who is white in color, in some circles, White German Shepherds are recognized as a separate breed from standard German Shepherds. Male dogs grow to the height of 24 to 26 inches tall and weigh approximately 65 to 85 lbs. Female German Shepherds are slightly smaller. They typically stand between 22 to 24 inches in height and weigh between 55 to 70 lbs. Both male and female German Shepherds have an expected lifespan between 9 and 13 years. White Shepherds are known for their erect ears, pale skin, a weather-resistant double coat, and a low set, natural tail. A white GSD usually has brown eyes and a black or pink nose. In both cases, for Black German Shepherds and White German Shepherds, the dog carries two copies of the recessive gene in this case, the white gene. The white recessive gene must be present in two copies in order for the White Shepherd to have a pure white coat. Temperament The stunning White German Shepherd dog has a distinct personality marked by loyalty, intelligence, and protective instincts. Similar to a standard German Shepherd, the White Shepherds are known for their extremely high levels of intelligence. They are among the smartest dog breeds in the world and do best when they have a task or job to perform. This is when their self-confidence truly shines, even from a young age. They can make an excellent guard dog! They are energetic and require regular exercise. You should plan to devote at least one hour per day to off-leash running. They are not an aggressive dog breed, though they can be trained to be. This is not a smart decision and is not recommended. Health Problems White Shepherds face the same health issues that standard German Shepherds are privy to. A responsible breeder understands the genetics of the breed as well as the best ways to care for the White German Shepherd puppies before they are adopted. You may find breeders that exclusively breed White German Shepherds. This is largely due to the fact that most dog owners want to train their dog from puppyhood and establish the dog as part of the family from their puppyhood. As such, puppy prices tend to be higher. Most breed clubs simply recognize the white coat as a color variant of a standard GSD. Therefore, you will not have to worry so much about champion bloodlines playing into the White German Shepherd price. Geographic Location Geographic location is a factor that affects the price of all dogs. Some areas are simply more expensive. You also have to factor in the possibility of flying to get your White Shepherd or having your new pup shipped to you, depending on the proximity of the breeder. This should be split over two meals 1. This may have to be modified. To understand the feeding amount and frequency of your White Shepherd, consult with your veterinarian. Most White Shepherds should have premium food. You can expect to pay more in medical costs if your White Shepherd develops any health ailments that are common to the breed, such as hip dysplasia. Still, these uniquely colored pups are generally prone to living a long and healthy life. Training Costs One of the biggest advantages of having a White Shepherd is how trainable they are! Early socialization is important for the breed in order to develop healthy social habits with other dogs. Puppy classes, which are done in a group setting, are primarily for obedience training. For private training, you can expect to pay a bit more. Miscellaneous Costs Dog walking White Shepherds demonstrate a great need for exercise. A mature dog will need at least an hour of daily exercise, preferably running off-leash. However, this may not always be possible. Hiring a dog walker is a must if you cannot provide your White Shepherd with sufficient exercise. Without releasing this energy, this muscular dog could become bored and destructive. Pet insurance For the dog lover who is worried about costly vet bills and unexpected expenses, pet insurance may be a good option. Grooming Most White German Shepherds require a moderate amount of grooming. The more often you brush your dog, the less grooming he will need. One of the unfortunate drawbacks of this purebred dog with a gorgeous coat is the presence of white hair everywhere! In fact, they can often develop separation anxiety or other anxiety disorders. The price is slightly higher as their stunning coloring is much rarer, considering it requires two copies of the white recessive gene. Related articles:. Much of their history is shared with the more traditional German Shepherd Dogs that are brown and black in color. They were predominantly used as herding dogs in northern Germany during the late s and early s. During this time, white German Shepherds occurred merely by chance. It was commonly thought that these oddly colored shepherds were weaker and less healthy. Even Adolf Hitler held strong opinions about white German Shepherds. In fact, many breeders began selectively breeding in an attempt to get more all-white GSDs. They are much rarer than their two-toned counterparts but highly sought after. Still, they are surrounded by controversy. The damage done to their reputation during World War II continues, and many German Shepherd fans still prefer the dark coats. Some farmers and ranchers use White German Shepherds to help guard their flocks. While the two breeds likely share some common ancestors, they are indeed separate breeds. The current leading thinking is that German Shepherds have a single piece of their genetic code that determines whether they will be all white, all black, or patterned like the traditional GSD. It is a recessive gene. For this reason, obtaining a White German Shepherd is no longer left up to chance. Breeders will breed a white male to a white female and will know that any offspring will be white. Breeders and buyers of White German Shepherds prefer true, snow-white coats. However, coat colors actually range from pure white to a light cream color. Unlike a dog with albinism, a White German Shepherd has grey skin under his thick double coat. And of course, it is very important to teach children to respect all dogs. This is a generous lifespan, and longer than many other large breeds are expected to live. White German Shepherds that live as long as 14 years will have good genetics, and will be well taken care of by its family. Those who live less than 11 years may have lower quality breeding, have common or uncommon health issues or have experienced trauma. Not only do dogs who are well taken care of live longer and happier lives, but they make better companions too! After two weeks after its final inoculations, your German Shepherd puppy will be allowed to walk on the ground outside or begin visiting friends and family. Grooming your White German Shepherd is also the same process, regardless of whether your pet is long-haired or short-haired. All German Shepherd dogs have an insulating undercoat that keeps them warm in colder months. GSDs tend to shed a lot, but during the spring and summer, their shedding increases as they lose their undercoat. Brushing your White German Shepherd at least twice a week with a stiff-bristle brush or shedding tool can help with the shedding. Bathe your White German Shepherd one a month at a maximum to avoid removing essential oils in its coat. Too many baths can also lead to skin dryness and extreme irritation. If you have a long-haired White German Shepherd, you will want to invest in professional grooming more frequently. A professional groomer will also clean your GSDs ears and glands, and will trim their nails. They have a ton of energy, so it is important that GSD owners allow their dogs plenty of opportunity to work both their mind and muscles. Dogs who are not allowed a sufficient amount of exercise will find other, more destructive ways to spend their energy. Usually, these more destructive ways involve injury to household objects, the dog himself, or even humans. You will want to take your White German Shepherd for a walk or run at least once a day. Sniffing on his walk will allow your White German Shepherd to exercise his clever brain. Other ways to exercise your White German Shepherd include hiking, a day at a doggy daycare, or even swimming at a lake or in a backyard pool. Avoid feeding your White German Shepherd table scraps and other human foods. Any food you buy for your White German Shepherd should be dry. Dry food encourages teeth to form solidly, and even acts as a natural toothbrush of sorts. This scary, but still uncommon, the problem is when the airway no longer opens wide enough for the dog to properly inhale. Some studies have been done to see if there is a link between the white gene of their coat and spontaneous laryngeal paralysis, but much more research is needed before anything can be concluded. Sadly, German Shepherds of all colors are prone to some other serious health issues. Most of these issues are inheritable, and reinforce the importance of careful and thoughtful breeding. The most common health problems for White German Shepherds are hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Dysplasia is a malformation of the bone at the joint. In its mild form, it can cause some pain and limping. However, if it is allowed to worsen, it will likely lead to very painful arthritis. Other issues affecting White German Shepherds include degenerative myelopathy, heart disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, and eye disorders. Some White German Shepherd owners report skin issues as a common ailment. Fortunately, skin issues are usually treatable through a careful diet, finding alternatives to bathing swimming, for example , and vet-prescribed help. The price of a White GSD puppy will vary based on gender, eye color, breeder reputation, and of course, overall demand. A purebred German Shepherd that is pure white in color will cost more than a mixed breed, or a purebred German Shepherd that is more beige in color.
