With a rich tan undercarriage and a black face and back, this color of GSD has been around since the very first was officially registered back in Germany at the end of the 19th century. Although Horand von Grafrath was a little darker than the modern black and tan GSD, the ancestry is evident. With their luxurious white coats, these pale dogs look more like Golden Retrievers with erect ears. Despite their popularity, like the white German Shepherd, the blue has been a cause of controversion in the Shepherd world because recessive dilution gene comes with inbreeding practices and health issues. Blue German Shepherds may appear gray or even silver and are sometimes mistaken for a Blue Belgian Malinois. Silver Similar to the gray German Shepherd, silver is nevertheless recognized as a distinct color. Often grouped together, however, the gray and silver colors are produced by the same genes. Finding a breeder that specializes in silver German Shepherds is a lot easier than finding one that focuses on the grey, so this might be your best bet if you want a more exotic-looking companion. Silver is an uncommon color for GSDs, possibly because it is a recessive gene. Similar to the dilution gene, this gene influences black pigment. While you also get silver sable German Shepherds, the patterned coats mean they are categorized as sable rather than silver. However, silver German Shepherds are often seen in military work or the police force. The red color is the result of the color gene pheomelanin. It can have any shade of red, ranging from strawberry blonde to a deep mahogany red. Alongside black and tan, the black and red combination is preferred over others by German Shepherd breeders. As black and red are both produced by dominant genes, this color combination is easier to breed for, and many breeders focus on producing purebred dogs with deep red coloring. Sable A classic color for the German Shepherd, a sable comes in a variety of colors but each hair sports a black tip. Sable GSDs can be black, gray, red, silver, or tan and are also known as agouti. Agouti is a type of coloring also present in other dogs, like the Agouti Husky. In this coloring each hair has several bands of brown and black, leading to a typical wolf-like coloration. Some founding members of the German Shepherd breed believed this should be the only color present in German Shepherds. Black sables are born as all-black pups and tri-colored sables are born as black and tan puppies. As the puppy ages, their coloring changes. Some GSDs may take as long as three years to develop their final sable coloration. As every sable GSD is different, with the color and pattern both varying, it makes for an eye-catching and unique dog. Sable is a dominant color that is easy to breed for. If you breed a Sable German Shepherd to any other color, you will likely get sable puppies. Black and Silver Much like the black and tan GSD, a black and silver German Shepherd usually has a silver saddle across its back, although the pattern and hue both vary from dog to dog. Like the silver GSD, the black and silver coloration occurs only when the recessive intensity suppression gene is present. This color is not common in the AKC show ring and can mostly be found in working dog lines. Because these dogs are not visible in the dark, it is highly advisable to only walk them on a light-up dog collar in the evenings and at night. Bicolor Bicolor German Shepherds appear almost completely black and, to fit the breed standard, must have black heads, back, legs and tail. Even if their paws are brown, the heels need to be black by the color standard definition. However, the AKC accepts bicolor as a recessive color in the breed. Though technically allowed in the show ring, these dogs are mostly found in working lines. Black and Cream The last official color on our list, the black and cream GSD remains true to its origins as a lighter version of the common red and tan coloring. There is some controversy surrounding the black and cream variation. Most AKC breeders do not want them to participate in the show ring. They strive to breed darker dogs that do not show the light cream coloring. The color does little to change their character, however, and black and cream GSDs excel obedience, nosework, rally and agility and are as loyal and brave as their black and tan cousins. Her DNA proved them wrong, although the Panda coloration remains unrecognized by some kennel clubs and breeders. The Panda GDS is created by a rare genetic mutation. The genes responsible for an all-white body and the patchy white are two different ones. This does not stop them from being popular however! There is a large demand for Panda-colored German Shepherds. Unfortunately, this inflates the price and leads breeders to focus on the color mutation rather than genetic health, so be sure to only source a puppy from a reputable breeder. Albino An albino German Shepherd is incredibly rare. An albino of any species or breed lacks any pigmentation, including of the skin, hair, and eyes as well as the blood vessels, resulting in a pinkish tinge. You can distinguish an albino German Shepherd from a white one by checking his eyes and nose. A White GDS will have some pigmentation resulting in brown eyes, whereas albinos always have red or pink eyes. An Albino GSD, should one exist, may experience other health problems associated with the condition. They may, for example, be photosensitive, requiring protection from direct sunlight. Your doodle may keep you up nights, have potty accidents, and other inconveniences for the first couple of weeks. The balance is due when your puppy is 4 weeks old. It is not our policy to refund deposits. Waiting List After your deposit is received, you are placed on our waiting list. As litters are bred or if we have extra spots after a litter is born, we contact the next families on the list that match the litter preferences. If the timing does not work for you or you cannot take a puppy from this litter, your name goes back on the top of the list, and you will be contacted for the next or future litter. After the Puppies are Born Puppy Collars The first thing we do after the puppies are born is to place a collar on them. The puppies wear different color collars, and this is how we track their weights two times a day, how our Vet keeps track of them and how you can track them from week to week in the pictures. Puppy Announcement and Weekly Updates After the puppies are born, we send a birth announcement via email to each family on the list with the litter specifics and pictures. We send pictures and updates every week, so you can watch them grow. Matching Puppies with Families Matching puppies with families is an integral part of our process, and we feel is one of the most significant things that sets us apart. Many breeders allow families to select their puppy in order of deposit, but we feel that we are serving each family and each puppy much better by selecting based on "best fit. Choose Your Favorites The first step in our selection process is to get your opinion based purely on the look of the puppies. After we send the 6-week pictures, we ask everyone on the list for their favorites, based solely on the look of the puppies. This test uses a scoring system and consists of ten individual tests. Each test is scored separately, and interpreted on its own merits. The scores are not averaged, and there are no winners or losers. The entire purpose is to select the right puppy for the right home. Your New Family Member! Once the testing is complete, we call everyone on the waiting list to go over their scores and discuss our recommendation of which of your favorites we think is the best fit. After this conversation, you have a puppy to call your own! Visiting Your New Puppy After the selection process is complete, you are welcome to visit your new puppy. The puppies are 6 weeks old by this time, and will have had their first set of vaccinations. When visiting your puppy, we request that you do not visit any other kennels, pet stores, breeders, or places where there could be unvaccinated dogs during the same day. We will ask that you take your shoes off at the door and use hand sanitizer. We will also ask that all kids sit on the floor when holding and playing with the puppies. Taking Home Your Puppy At eight weeks, you will be invited to take your puppy home. We will assign a time for your pickup so that we can spend some uninterupted time with you going over things we think you should know and answering any questions you may have. The drive home When you pick up your puppy, we recommend bringing someone with you who can hold the puppy on their lap for the drive home. Your puppy will be unfamiliar in his new surroundings, and without his siblings. Holding the puppy on your lap on an old bath towel will keep your puppy feeling safe and happy and start him off in the best possible way to his new life. Avoid High Traffic Areas On the way home, please remember that your puppy is vulnerable because he has not yet completed his vaccines. Avoid stopping at "high traffic" dog areas, like rest stops, on your journey home. Instead try stopping at restaurants, where people with dogs in the car are less likely to stop. By avoiding areas where other dogs have been walked, you greatly reduce the chances of your puppy picking up any germs left behind. If you have to stop at a rest area, please carry your puppy to a more secluded spot, and you might even want to put your puppy on a puppy pad rather than on the grass - or for the most secure solution, simply put them in a crate lined with a puppy pad. In general, your puppy should be able to make at least a two hour trip without stopping. Visiting the Vet When you go to your Vet, carry your puppy in and place it on the table; don't let it walk across the floor where a sick dog could have been. Until your puppy has had its last set of puppy vaccines, 16 weeks, you need to treat it like it has no immune system and avoid high risk situations such as parks and pet stores. If you want to get even more specific info, go on Facebook groups. Facebook groups are the BEST for finding out really specific information and reading forums! For me, I wanted a recommendation for an individual person to do the grooming, not just a highly rated company. From there I was able to make an appointment with her, and we have used her ever since. Expressing your desired style with words is definitely necessary, but sharing pictures is invaluable because it minimizes the chance of a misunderstanding or miscommunication. Use Instagram or Pinterest to find great pictures! Pick photos from a few different dogs and different angles. When looking for photos, also make sure you pick dogs with similar types of fur. So if your dog is super duper curly, pictures of Polly may not be very helpful or attainable. Get the Language Right This is the part that I think is the most mystifying for owners. How do I get the picture and the words in my head across correctly to my groomer?! It can definitely be a complex thing to try to explain. My first tip is to try explaining things in a couple different ways. Do an all-over scissor cut. This means using scissors for the entire haircut. This will probably cost a little extra. Body: Make it one length all over. Some groomers will make the length on the legs longer. Ask them to make it the same length as the body. Trim the tail down. Face: Want the face to be very very short. The way I request her face to be trimmed is pretty extreme by dog grooming standards, I think. Trim eyelashes. I like the puppy eyelash look - you know how they were basically human-length eyelashes when they were first puppies? Trim so they are closer to that length. They will still look beautiful and you should still be able to see them - just want to avoid that look where they are all starting to gather together and go way past the eyes, or even droop down. I think our groomer layers them a little bit. You want them to look like puppy ears. Make sure they trim on the inside by the ears too so that gets cleaned up. You want the fur around the eyes trimmed very well so that you can see their eyes fully. No fur should be impeding their vision or growing up or down into their eyes at all. You want to be able to see their cute eyes, and you want them to be able to see you! Just trim. Cut the hair on their beard or chin very short. This will help keep their face from getting as dirty or messy. Definitely no mustache! This is probably the 1 thing to ask for. Ask for them to cut the hair on the whole nose or snout area very short. You want it to look puffy and kind of give a chubby cheeks look. Pictures will be helpful in explaining this. Trim the cheeks so they will look short similar to the nose. It just looks that way because they have to blow dry them. The fur should look normal again in days. When you go to pick up your pup, be sure to give feedback! If I want the face shorter or the tail trimmed a little more, it only takes minutes for her to go fix it. If you go home and then realize there are a couple things you want differently, write it down. The next time you go in, tell them you want the same cut as last time but with a couple adjustments. Another thing I do is trim Polly myself in between cuts. If I realize in a few days that I wish her beard was just a little shorter, I just do it myself! Lastly, make sure to tip your groomer well! It is a service that you are supposed to tip, and these groomers do a LOT more than just the haircut itself, so be generous and build a good relationship. For your dog. Even if you hate it, it will grow out in a few weeks and you can try again next time. A couple more tips: Start bringing your puppy to the groomer at an early age!
