When visitors came to my home, he charged them, barked uncontrollably, and tried to bite them to make them go away. He actually bit Garrett in the leg! He was overprotective of the house and yard. He stood watch at the window waiting for something to approach so could bark and make a fuss. He used to jump up and hit the bird cage to make noise and watch the birds flutter. After working with Garrett, I feel Mikey has improved and will improve even more with time. On walks, I now have more control. I am able to redirect him to focus on me by backing him up, and changing direction in which we walk. I use my crutch to redirect him. I am more aware of potential problems and take action to avoid them. I can remain calm and have more control of him. He still needs work in this area but I know what to do. In the past I was told to feed him to keep his attention but this was only reinforcing his troublesome behavior. When visitors now come to my home, Mikey is told to go to his place, sit, and down. He is learning not to charge the door. He has started behaving successfully with visitors. I have completed exercises with him by rigging the doorbell and having friends enter. The exercises have been working. I can catch him more quickly and keep his excitement from escalating. He is less aggressive to the birds and is learning not to get over excited and bang on their cage. Garrett has emphasized the need to remain calm, use hand signals and speak softly and this is working. I now see that Mikey is affected by my mental state. Thank you Garrett. She has always been a great and loving dog but is stubborn, domineering and has separation anxiety. After my ex and I split a couple of years ago, Izzy stayed with him for nine months. During that time, she went through a lot of change and, when I got her back, her anxiety was worse than it had ever been. She was constantly on-guard and aggressive with and domineering of other dogs. If we even saw a dog while walking, Izzy would pull and lunge, jump on and nearly knock me over. Charlie was incredibly aggressive with other animals despite his behavior around people. He unpredictably attacks other dogs and mauls them terribly to the point where we have actually considered putting him to sleep due to liability and trauma he has put on our neighbors and any dog that passes our home and Charlie has gotten out and been unfortunate to reach. We arranged our very first meeting with Garrett and within 15 minutes he was able to come into our home and demonstrate to us that he was able to show our pet Charlie who is dominant this initial meeting with Garrett and also allow us to have hope that we would not have to put him down and there would be some way we could train him. We were able to change the dominance and aggressive pattern by working with Charlie and using the psychological-type training methods that Garrett presented to us. He is not the typical type of trainer that involves reward, praise, food, but explains how an animal thinks and how an animal need to be rid of behaviors such as aggressive behavior. I love my dog and wouldn't put her in anyone else's hands. I have a Thai Ridgeback that was a rescue from Thailand. He was in very poor condition when I got him and because of that, I fostered many of his bad behaviors because I felt bad for him. I was at my wits end because "Mako" had a lot of aggression which I learned was based in fear. Garrett came over and immediately diagnosed Mako's fear. He also has those nasty stains in his face wrinkles. He has some skin issues and his ears are infected, but we know Dr. Larsen will help get all those fixed. When we got to the clinic today, I let out a little whimper when they were examining me and poor Washington thought they were hurting me. He tried to run to protect me, but a man held him back. I know he just wanted to check on me. I guess we both love each other… a lot. Anyhoooo, you can see why we hope we can stay together, be fostered together and be adopted together. We heard it has happened before, so we feel certain it will happen for us too. How would you like to have us in your family? Belle passed suddenly yesterday following complications during surgery. He had a very restless night and had to be sedated. This morning, he started out a little slow and grumpy, but got better throughout the day. Staff spent a lot of extra time with him and let him play outside. I spent about 30 minutes with him this afternoon. He moved around the yard, but he kept looking around. I think I know why. He and Belle always went outside together! He will get lots of extra love and attention. He is ready to leave the vet clinic and move into his foster home. He has been at our house for almost two weeks. He is incredibly docile and calm. He is house trained and well behaved. He gets along well with our children and walks well on the leash. He does, however, have some significant separation anxiety. He is a delightful pup, but he does not like to be in a crate or left alone. With the help of Heather, Dr. Larsen and Janell, we have made some changes to try and help this poor guy out. He also has some meds to help calm him down so his anxiety is not so bad while we are away. We are slowly seeing some improvements. He enjoys sleeping on his big comfy bed in front of the warm fireplace! How can anyone not love that sweet face?!? I do have some anxiety issues that my foster parents are helping me through. I did great on Christmas morning with all the chaos, as you can see in the picture of me sleeping in the wrapping paper. My humans had family members over to visit and I mostly behaved myself. Bacon is delicious, can you blame me?!? I will need a family who is willing to be patient with me and help me learn the rules of being a good Bulldog. My favorite spot is right in front of the fireplace, where I can snuggle up, snore and sleep. I did have an interesting encounter while on a walk this week. Labradors are very friendly and tend to make friends with strangers and other animals with ease. They are highly intelligent and easy to please, which makes them easy to train. These characteristics combined make them excellent working dogs, especially when it comes to disability support. They are often used as guide dogs. Labs are energetic dogs that need lots of exercise and attention. Golden Retrievers Golden retrievers were also bred in the UK to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks. They have a soft mouth that allows them to delicately retrieve and bring back game undamaged. Like Labradors, golden retrievers also love water and are strong swimmers. This is another medium-to-large breed that typically measures somewhere between 20 and 22 inches in height. They have a double coat with a top layer that is high shedding. They are both friendly and confident, which makes them excellent family pets. They are also particularly good with children, who they will adopt as their own. While they will be protective of their people, golden retrievers are very friendly and more likely to go in for a pat and a play rather than bark or attack a stranger. They are intelligent, biddable, and have a strong eagerness to please, which makes them highly trainable. This is why golden retrievers are also often used as working dogs in activities such as search and rescue as well as disability assistance. Goldador Goldadors have been around for about 20 years and are an attempt to bring together the best of the Labrador and golden retriever breeds. Normally, crossbred dogs can be highly unpredictable, because there is no reliable way of predicting how the genes of the two parent dogs will mix. However, with Labs and Goldens, while we may not be able to predict their exact appearance, the temperaments of the two dogs are consistent enough that the resulting mix always has the friendly, intelligent, and easy to please temperament that most people are looking for. Goldador Appearance Goldadors are medium-to-large-sized dogs that typically measure between 20 and 24 inches tall and weigh somewhere between 55 and 80 pounds. Females tend to be noticeably smaller than the males. You can expect them to reach their full size somewhere between 18 and 24 months of age. Goldadors typically have a double coat that mixes a short, thick, straight topcoat and a soft, dense undercoat. This allows them to enjoy a swim even in the coldest water, but it also means they tend to shed quite a lot. They need to be brushed at least once a week to remove dead hair and more often during seasonal shedding periods. Their coat is likely to range in color from a yellowish gold to a reddish gold, though on rare occasions, they may inherit the black or chocolate coat of their Labrador parent. It is difficult to predict whether the square face of the Labrador or the more pointed face of the golden retriever will be prevalent in their puppies. While they might jump up to protect children they consider to be part of their family, aggression among these dogs is almost unheard of and will almost always relate to some kind of traumatic experience. They are more curious about other creatures than worried about them. Intelligence Goldadors are extremely intelligent, and both of their parents are ranked among the most intelligent breeds. This means not only that they can learn new commands quickly, but that they are also independent thinkers. They can figure out what is wanted from them in new situations based on their past experiences. Of course, when not probably utilized, this intelligence can become problematic. A Goldador left at home for hours on end is likely to turn their keen mind into finding a way to escape. Trainability There are many intelligent dogs out there that are difficult to train primarily because they are incredibly stubborn. Thankfully, Goldadors are eager to please and highly motivated by reward, which makes them extremely loyal and easy to train. These dogs also have a great work ethic, and they enjoy having something to do. This means they make great working dogs, and they have the attention span to take on challenges such as disability support. They find this mentally stimulating and emotionally rewarding. Energy Level Goldadors have lots of energy that needs to be burned off on a daily basis. They need a minimum of at least 30 minutes of solid exercise a day, but they will really thrive if given at least an hour or more of exercise per day. They are better adapted to spaces with at least a small garden to apartment living. They will particularly love joining their families on hikes and other adventures. They also love to swim, so swimming should make up a regular part of their activity. Independence Goldadors love being around their people. These are not the types of dogs you can leave at home for extended periods of time. While they might be able to settle down and do nothing for a few hours when you are around, if they are left alone, they can become anxious. This prolonged anxiety can result in lots of nervous, and often destructive, energy. Goldador Health Risks If you adopt a Goldador, you can expect them to live for roughly 10 to 15 years, which is a respectable amount of time for a large-sized dog. They can be prone to inherited health conditions, but whether or not your Goldador will suffer from any of these ailments as they grow is pretty much the luck of the draw. You can get some indication of their likelihood of developing these conditions if you look at the medical records of their parents. One of the most common health problems affecting Goldadors is hip and elbow dysplasia. This is a malformation of the bones that occurs as they grow, as their bones grow at different rates and end up being the wrong size for one another. The best way to prevent this is with a healthy diet and lots of exercise when they are young to prevent the problem from developing. If this happens, an orthopedic bed that helps take excess pressure off their joints can make a big difference. Should I Get A Goldador? Having read all of this, you might still be wondering whether a Goldador is the right dog for you. You should start by asking yourself whether you are in a position to make the commitment to adopting any dog. Remember, by adopting a dog, you are committing to care for, love, and support your pup for the next 10 to 15 years. Do you have plans to move in the coming years? If so, will you be able to take your dog with you? Do you have someone who can look after your dog when you travel? This could be a friend, a family member, or a reputable kennel that is able to care for your dog for a certain period of time. Once you have answered those questions, it is time to think about adopting a Goldador specifically. Be sure to ask yourself the following questions moving forward. Do You Have Space? Goldadors thrive when they have at least some outdoor space to call their own. They will struggle with apartment living. Be sure your outdoor space is properly fenced to prevent your Goldador from escaping if they get bored and start digging. Goldadors need to be around people often. They can develop anxiety issues if left alone for extended periods of time. Are there people around the house most of the time to keep your dog company? Also, will you be able to commit at least 30 to 60 minutes each day to providing your Goldador with exercise? Be sure you have plenty of time to spend with your Goldador, as they can be fairly emotionally needy dogs. Goldadors not only need quite a bit of physical exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, but also quite a bit of mental stimulation. Their intelligence and work ethic mean they need someone to take the time to train them and keep them occupied. Thankfully, Goldadors are actually excellent dogs for first-time owners. They are highly trainable, so even a novice should be able to teach them the essentials. Their friendly nature means you are also very unlikely to end up with an aggressive dog that you struggle to control. Additionally, if anyone in the home has asthma, you will want to groom your Goldador regularly to avoid leaving excess hair around the home. Yes, Goldadors are excellent dogs that mix friendliness, intelligence, and energy in one adorable package. The characteristics of their parents tend to complement each other nicely to create a medium-to-large-sized dog that makes a great family pet or working pup. How much does a Goldador cost? The exact cost of a Goldador depends primarily on your location and whether you adopt from a shelter, a breeder, or elsewhere. How do you train a Goldador puppy? The best way to train most dogs is by using positive reinforcement. This means showing your pup the behavior that you would like and then rewarding them when they complete the behavior. Positive reinforcement training teaches dogs how to perform desired behaviors and that they can expect good things to happen if they do it. Soon, it will become instinctive, and you will no longer need to reward them every time. This is a particularly good form of training for Goldadors because they are highly motivated by both treats and pleasing. It is never a good idea to punish dogs when they misbehave. Not only is it important when searching for a breed of dog that has the right temperament and exercise requirements for your lifestyle, but it is also equally important to determine if all the members of your family can tolerate the allergens a dog adds to the house. If you will be a first-time dog owner or you have added a child to your family since your last dog was around, it is important to do some easy testing to determine if adding a dog is a possibility. Any family member that is unsure about their compatibility with a dog due to allergies needs to visit with dog-owning friends. These visits should be indoors where their dog lives and allergens are at their highest concentration. Petting the dog, rubbing your hands on your face, and even allowing the dog to lick your hands are good first steps in determining your level of reaction to interacting with a dog. Document your reactions as well as the breed of dog, whether or not he sheds, and if you were licked and where. When a dog sheds hair, dander attached to the hair follicle is released. Therefore, dogs that do not shed produce much less dander. Those allergic to saliva can avoid allowing a dog to lick them, so that is the easier of the issues to conquer. Wiping the paws and belly of your dog with cleansing wipes when he comes in from outside will help reduce reactions to things such as pollen. How Do Dog Allergies Manifest? Dog allergies usually come in the form of an itchy throat, watery eyes, and possibly skin hives. The symptoms will depend on your level of allergies and could even cause an asthmatic response for some. What Does Being Hypoallergenic Mean? In reality, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog as some people are allergic to all dogs no matter what. When we refer to being a hypoallergenic dog or breed, this just means it has less chance of triggering an allergic response. Non-shedding dogs produce less dander and less dander means fewer allergens left on the rugs, furniture, and clothes, and floating in the air. Therefore, families with allergy concerns have a much better chance of compatibility with a dog that does not shed. The correct answer to this question is no, they are not. Not all Goldendoodles are created equal when it comes to be non-shedding. A Goldendoodle must inherit two furnishing genes to have a non-shedding coat. This can happen by chance, but it is much easier to achieve using DNA and selective breeding. Certain generations of Goldendoodles cannot inherit two furnishing genes, and therefore, will be mild to moderate shedders removing them from the list of possible candidates for those who suffer from mild to moderate allergies. What Goldendoodle Generations are Non-Shedding? F1 Goldendoodles are the product of crossing a Poodle and a Golden Retriever. Offspring inherit one gene from each parent for each trait. Because Golden Retrievers carry zero furnishing genes and Poodles carry two, all F1 Goldendoodles will inherit just one furnishing gene. Furnishing genes are not only responsible for whether or not a dog sheds, they are responsible for producing long hair on the muzzle of dogs. This gene is dominant meaning it will be expressed when its beneficiary only inherits one copy and this is why F1 Goldendoodles have fluffy facial hair. However, the lack of the second gene means F1 Goldendoodles will still shed some. The amount of shedding though will be less than that of a Golden Retriever who carries zero furnishing genes. When creating the next generation of Goldendoodles, one can cross two F1s or an F1 Goldendoodle back to one of the parent breeds. These generations are the F2 and the F1B respectively. The chart below will explain generations. Note the F1B generation that could have a Golden Retriever parent as it will provide no offspring with two furnishing genes and approximately half of the offspring with zero furnishing genes. A Poodle or a Golden Retriever bred to a multigen Goldendoodle also constitutes a multigen. In all these generations beyond the F1 Goldendoodle, it is possible to have offspring with zero, one, or two furnishing genes. For a breeder to produce entire litters that each carry two furnishing genes, DNA testing on the parents is required.
