More than twice as many Labs were registered than any other breed making it a likely leader for many years to come. In a recent article, a licensed professional counselor for more than twenty-five years, explained how owning a Lab can help produce healthier, happier, more well adjusted children. Here is an excerpt from her article: Regular dog-walking increases social interaction for children—especially those who have just moved to a neighborhood and are feeling homesick for their former home. A child who might not want to go out into the neighborhood alone, feels that he or she has a purpose in walking the dog, and therefore can face unfamiliar faces or places more easily than when alone. Walking the dog could be the perfect way for a shy or awkward adolescent to meet new friends in the neighborhood. Be sure to read the rest of her seven part article, Ten Reasons to Own a Dog. Monty was our first Red Barn Farm Labradors lab. He seemed to be a bit of an old soul after his first year, and when we heard Mel may be having more puppies, I knew Monty would love a RBFL brother. Our Gus could not be any more different from his big brother Monty. Gus is a young whippersnapper who spends his time hunting in the yard while our old man Monty basks in the sun. Mel has the most beautiful personality and kind disposition, and I swear her positive energy was absorbed by the pups. Bruin left some big ole puppy shoes to fill. Our hearts felt empty with out a Lab, so we reached out to Mel Maryellen. When the litter of pups we were anticipating were born, everything felt very meant-to-be. Prior to the litters arrival we decided upon a black boy pup. Out of an entire litter of 5 there was one little handsome male pup, and he was black! Insert our Charlie boy here! Charlie has filled those puppy shoes beyond what we imagined. Charlie has the gentle loving eyes of an old soul with the playfulness of a healthy pup. He is beyond smart, and is currently learning to hunt! Charlie immediately had an extra strong bond with our 4 year old daughter, which has warmed all of our hearts from day one. We feel so lucky to have a RBFL in our family to love. Red Barn Farm Labradors was recommended by word of mouth. Our adoption experience and our Lab, Libby AKA Liberty Bell have been the best experience and the best adoption experience we have ever had. At four years old, Libby is still the sweet, socialized, healthy dog we chose as a puppy. Mel Maryellen is knowledgeable, informative, and fair to all new perspective puppy families. Mel loves those puppies long before you know which pup to choose. Highly recommended! We Love Our Libby! We have formed such a great connection with Mel ever since our first phone interview with her. It was apparent from the beginning how much she loves these dogs and cares about placing them in a good home. From meeting the puppies as a litter and getting to select our special pup to Gotcha Day at 8 weeks old, with a take home bag including a comfort Momma scented lovie blanket and toy, Mel was fantastic! You can tell the puppies are well loved from day one! I will always go to Mel for my Labs! She is an amazing breeder. She is also willing to answer any questions or concerns at any time. She truly loves them and takes great care of them and knowing our puppy would be loved so fully for her first 8 weeks of life meant the world to us! Remi has been everything we hoped for and more, she has the best temperament and personality for our lifestyle. Driven and energetic while being cuddly and loyal through and through. We love our RedBarnFarm lab and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a wonderful addition to the family. We found Red Barn Labs though a friend and from the moment we had our first phone interview we knew we found the right place to adopt our next lab from. Maryellen loves her dogs and all her pups. She has been available anytime we have a question or want to share our fun lab moments with her. We love staying in touch and following the extended RBL family online. Our pup is healthy, intelligent, and beautiful. She is a great dog! She has a lot of spunk, has great bird instinct, loves to play and loves being part of our family. She makes us so happy, and we are thrilled to have Maryellen, and RBL as part of our family now too. That is what Mel Maryellen excels at and it is a selfless act not many can do well. My experience with Mel was so smooth and personable from day one and still is to this very day. It is an honor to be able to have one of her pups. When going to pick out our puppy, we knew all of his litter was extremely well cared for and loved before we brought him home. Maryellen carefully listened to what we were looking for in a family dog, and helped guide us to goofy boy, Woody. Almost two years later, we know we can reach out to her for anything dog related- even just to show her a silly picture of our boy! Ad for our big boy, he is everything you can want in a Lab. He is playful, loyal, and an easy going brother to his dog sibling and human sibling and an excellent dog in our active family. We will never get a dog from another breeder! She immediately stole our hearts with her sweet and fun-loving nature. Our Red Barn Farm Labrador came to us full of love which was due to the loving care she received from day one. She is very smart, confident, silly, loyal and full of personality. We love her beautiful coat which is black as night and soft as velvet. She spreads the love of Labs that stems from the passion for amazing dogs at Red Barn Farm! From the moment we pulled up to her magical Vermont home we were in love with both her and our new family member, Benelli. We love being part of the Red Barn Farm Labradors family and would recommend them to everyone! He is a pup of Eva and Chip. There are working hunting dogs on both sides of his breeding and it shows! Maryellen puts in a lot of hard work to produce high quality dogs for their loving owners. From the time the pups are born until they go home to their new owners, Maryellen takes care of them around the clock beyond the expected to socialize them with their littler mates as well as other humans, animals, and various other stimuli they may encounter out in the world. We also appreciate how RBFL likes to check in on their pups via IG to see what kinds of adventures they are experiencing. Bode was the Fox Red male from sweet momma, Annie and super stud, Chip. Maryellen is the most wonderful, caring, kind, and thoughtful breeder I have ever met. The sincere communication, attention to mother, father and pups were of utmost importance to Maryellen. Our Bode is a hunk of burning love, fun and silliness. His personality is as big as he is and we love all of him! He spends his days with his older brother Chocolate Lab, Tucker hiking, ripping up stuffies, snuggling, and begging for treats. When the day comes to get another four-legged addition, we will calling Maryellen at Red Barn Farm Labradors!

Temperament and Behavioral Characteristics Having a cheerful and loving disposition, they are amicable and get along well with people of all ages beginning from children to the elderly folk as well as other dogs and pets. They enjoy being in the company of their family members, also showing eagerness to please and satisfy their owners. In fact, leaving them alone for prolonged period may affect their personality in a negative way. They are great attention seekers loving to be noticed by their masters always—a quality that might compel them to be jealous of the little ones in the family. The barking trait of the American Eskimo dog and Poodle is highly inherent in this breed making them let out a howl the moment they spot an unfamiliar face, hear any strange noise or are suffering from pangs of loneliness. Though they have a good compatibility with children, it is essential to teach the kids to handle them with care, thus requiring an adult supervision during their interaction with these dogs. Just like its American Eskimo parent, this breed too enjoys cold weather, while some of them might also have fun playing in the snow. Care Exercise They do well in homes and apartments provided they are exercised on a regular basis. Taking them for a brisk walk or engaging them in exciting games would be helpful in ensuring a healthy physical and mental development. However, do not over exercise them as they tend to get exhausted after thirty minutes of running. Grooming Though the American Eskimo-Poodle mix sheds less, its coat should regularly be brushed to prevent the curls from getting tangled. A slicker brush would be appropriate for this purpose. Bathe your pet only when required, also keep its teeth, eyes and ears clean to check infection of any kind. Trimming and clipping of the coat should be occasional depending on the hair type. In fact, those with a wavy, long and curly hair would require a haircut quite frequently mainly during the winters in comparison to the rest. Health Problems Though it is not known to suffer from any serious health concerns, it might have some of the ailments of its parents such as hip dysplasia, luxating patella and Progressive Retinal Atrophy American Eskimo or epilepsy, thyroid problems and gastric dilatation-volvulus Poodle. It also has chances of contracting eye infections at frequent intervals. The Eskipoo puppies should be imparted with socialization and obedience training to help them develop a pleasing personality. The trainer should be firm and patient enough to handle this active breed well. You can also teach your pet to housebreak and help him get rid of separation anxiety if it is too high in him. Feeding It is essential to provide the Eskipoo with dry dog food divided into equal meals. Apart from this make sure you give him a well-balanced diet having sufficient amount of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and other minerals. Is the Eskipoo right for you? The Eskipoo dog breed is a cross between the American Eskimo and Poodle. These dogs are small in size, with round eyes that are mostly blue, with a short black muzzle, floppy ears, and a dense coat. Due to its happy temperament and good nature, it has been a popular pet choice for all ages. The Eskipoo is believed to have come into existence in the late 20th century. However, little is known as who first bred the Eskipoo and when. Some believed it could first be traced back to Egyptian and Roman times, while some researchers believe they originally came from Germany. What does an Eskipoo look like? An Eskipoo is a small-sized dog with a round head. It has a floppy and large triangular poodle-style ears and a black nose. Its eyes can either be brown or blue. First, you can get an Eskipoo with a short and smooth curly coat like a Poodle. Second, you can have an Eskipoo with a long and thick coat like an American Eskimo. Most of the time, their coat is medium-length and could either be quite dense or way with a double layer. Since they often have a dense coat, this breed is more suitable for colder environments. The Eskipoo is also available in many coat colors. Below is the rundown of their available colors. White: This is the most common color available for an Eskipoo. Black: You can also see Eskipoos with black-colored coats. Some have pure black color, while some can have tints of blue or red. Brown: They also come in a variety of shades of brown that range from light to dark brown. Cream: They also come in light-off white or deep tan color of cream. Grey: Some Eskipoos have grey coats, or sometimes their coat changes to grey color before they turn five years of age. What is the Eskipoo temperament? When you make an Eskipoo your pet, you can expect it to be affectionate, playful, energetic, and gentle. Because of their friendly and cheerful personality, they can be a great addition to your family. Their size makes them ideal for apartment, house, or condo living as long as they have adequate time to get sunshine and fresh air and go for an exercise outside. Additionally, their jolly and loving disposition makes them suitable for all ages, including elders and children. But always remember to supervise them if you let them play with children, especially the toddlers. Moreover, if you have other dogs in the household, the Eskipoo can easily get along with them, as long as you keep them socialized with each other. There is a downside, though, in their clingy nature. As a result, they can get bored and start chewing on your house furniture or bark excessively. This breed also tends to bark or howl at unfamiliar sights, faces, or sounds. But this can be resolved with proper training. Senior citizens or retirees who love a gentle yet fun-loving pooch and challenge themselves with moderate activity during the day can greatly benefit from the Eskipoo dog. Is an Eskipoo a good family dog? The Eskipoo is an incredible companion dog who will give you love, loyalty, and affection, making them a good family dog. Their playful nature makes them a joy to be around. They also do well with children. They like to lick your child in their little fingers and head and cuddle them. How big does Eskipoo get? Eskipoos can grow up to 9 and 16 inches .How much does Eskipoo weigh? They can weigh between 10 and 20 pounds 4. Does Eskipoo shed? Depending on their inherited traits from their parents, they can be curly and single-layered like the Poodle or fluffy and thick-layered like the American Eskimo. Sometimes, their coat is in between. Even so, to avoid tangling or matting their coats, you need to brush them frequently using a slicker brush. Moreover, Eskipoos rarely drools. But if they do excessive drooling, it may be a sign of a problem that needs medical attention from a veterinarian. How often should you bathe an Eskipoo? Once every 2 to 3 months is adequate; however, they often need brushing to keep their coats in good shape. The recommended brushing is between 4 to 5 times per week. What are the grooming requirements of an Eskipoo? As mentioned earlier, this breed is low maintenance. To take care of its coat, you need to brush it at least 4 to 5 times per week. The recommended brush to use is a soft brush and a wide-tooth comb. Again, bathing is only required once every 2 to 3 months. Only bathe them if dirt is visible in their coat. The reason for not bathing them all the time is to preserve any natural oil from being washed out, which keeps its coat naturally shiny. If it takes after its Poodle parent, you also need to bring it to a professional groomer every 2 to 3 months for a haircut. In terms of brushing their teeth, you should do it daily. Their nails, however, should be trimmed every two weeks. You should also regularly check their ears and eyes and remove any dirt around them to reduce any risks of infection. Does an Eskipoo bark a lot? Eskipoos are social dogs who love to be in the company of humans. They hate to be left alone and can become destructive to your belongings or bark excessively when this happens. They also bark a lot when they see unfamiliar faces, hear unusual sounds, or experience a different environment. But with proper training over time, this behavior can be changed or minimized. Are Eskipoo hypoallergenic? But, this is only true if they inherited the genes of their Poodle parent. If this is the case, prepare for some shedding. The shedding is most especially experienced in-between seasons. Having an American Eskimo dominant gene will give them a thicker coat and more hair to shed. If you have allergies, make sure you get the one whose genes are more dominant to its Poodle parent. Similarly, you can try to adopt it for a few days and see if your allergies respond to it. Since Eskipoo is a high-energy dog, they will require a healthy diet of excellent quality kibble. This breed is prone to having dental issues, so giving them dry kibble is strongly recommended to keep their teeth strong and healthy. You can also give them wet food if their dental issues make it impossible for them to chew dry kibble. Eskipoo behavior problems Generally, Eskipoos are great and lovely dogs to have when trained well. However, there are potential issues in their behavior when their training goes awry. Below are some of the most common behavioral problems in Eskipoos. Too much barking There is a potential behavioral problem with an Eskipoo barking a lot. This means their potential as apartment dogs can be limited. They have an innate ability to bark at the signs of trouble. Suffer from separation anxiety Eskipoos need attention most of the time. If left alone for a long period, they have the tendency to be depressed and have separation anxiety. This leads to them being destructive to your belongings. Stubborn Another thing you need to know about Eskipoos is their stubbornness. This breed wants to get things their way. Too Energetic This breed has so much energy, which means they need a lot of daily exercise and playtime. This means that you need to be ready to invest lots of time, affection, and energy to make them feel loved and maintain their well-being. Is Eskipoo easy to train? The potential issues stated above of the Eskipoos mean that owners may need to seek professional help, especially when these behavioral problems start to manifest. Training is important at an early age, especially in the areas of separation training and socialization. Eskipoos are people pleasers, which makes them easy to train. But they need a trainer who can teach them with patience and consistency. They respond very well to positive reinforcements. Hence, in training them, you should provide them with treats such as food and even vocal praises to reward them if they do a great job. These dogs are also pretty intelligent, adding to the ease it takes to train them. Their parents are both working dogs, which means they thrive when given a job to do. And often, they do a good job to please their owners. What is the average lifespan of Eskipoos? Eskipoos, on average, can live up to 10 to 13 years. What are the common health problems of Eskipoos? The average lifespan of an Eskipoo can be reduced, however, if they suffer from health problems. The following are the most common health problems of Eskipoos. This condition is a common occurrence among dogs, but smaller breeds are more affected. This condition can be treated with medication and physical therapy. But, in severe cases where your dog feels significant pain, surgery may be necessary. Cataracts As your Eskipoo age, it may develop cataracts as humans do. Unfortunately, no pill or eye drop can reverse the damage in the lens. Squamous cell carcinoma Squamous cell carcinoma is developed due to the lesions of the nail bed or toe of the dog. When the lesions get irritated, it may lead to some serious condition known as Squamous cell carcinoma. Only surgery can heal this condition. Epilepsy Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in dogs. Seizures often happen when the brain changes its activity, such as when the dog gets too excited for feeding or as they wake up or fall asleep. Exercise after eating increases its risk. And since Eskipoos are known to be hyperactive, they tend to develop this medical condition. How much does an Eskipoo cost? The cost of Eskipoos will always vary on several factors such as their breeder, the location, and of course, the supply and demand. If you live in a place where Eskipoos are popular but with only a few breeders, the price for each pup may increase, especially if you want a healthy and quality dog. Some breeders also charge more if an Eskipoo has rare characteristics such as having blue eyes or colors of apricots and browns. Where to buy or adopt an Eskipoo dog? If you want to be an Eskipoo owner, you can buy from reputable and trustworthy breeders. However, if you opt to find Eskipoos in rescue centers, your chances of getting them are high. Hence, they tend to abandon them and leave them in a rescue shelter. If you want to find an Eskipoo pup in a rescue shelter, you need to understand their personality and needs and think long if you have the commitment and ability to meet their needs. If you want to be an Eskipoo owner, the best places are the following websites. Lifespan Sociability You should know all there is to know about this mixed dog breed before deciding to buy one and introduce it to your household. There is no set price for these cute mixed breed dogs, but you can expect to spend quite a bit when it comes time to adopt one. The most important thing to keep in mind when shopping for an Eskapoo pup is health. This will make the price of your Eskapoo pup even higher. Veterinarian costs, pet essentials like food and water bowls, and accessories like toys and treats are also expenses that need to be considered. This is one of the things that makes them such great family dogs! They Handle Season Changes Well Due to the hypoallergenic and water-resistant characteristics of the Poodle and the thick double-coat of the American Eskimo, Eskapoos can handle cold and damp weather well. They are also built to deal with warmer weather, which makes them great four-season dogs. They Are Food Motivated This mixed breed is food motivated, making it easy to train them with the use of treats. Food will get them to do just about anything you want them to do, whether that means fetching your newspaper in the morning or sitting quietly by the door when a visitor enters your home. Their curiosity can get the best of them, at times but keeping them busy will minimize destruction within the house. A house with a fenced yard is ideal for these frisky dogs, but they can live in an apartment setting if they can walk and play outside regularly. This mixed breed can be easily trained, and they are always yearning to learn something new. Families that are regularly away from the house all day may not be the best fit for this dog. Their playful attitude makes them fun to be around, and their social personality makes it easy to introduce them to strangers. These dogs are alert and vocal, making them excellent watchdogs at home. They are loyal to their family members and will stay by your side at every opportunity. Are Eskapoos Good for Families? If they take more after their Poodle parent, they could have hypoallergenic qualities that family members with allergies can appreciate. They can also learn how to get along with cats, but they need to be trained not to chase them. A post shared by Andrey Bityukov a. Here is what you should know before adopting a new Eskapoo puppy of your own. They do tend to have sensitive digestive systems, so choosing a grain-free food will minimize the risk of constipation and nausea. After a year of age, you can switch to a quality food made for adults or all life stages. Your dog will expect a long walk every day, in addition to time playing fetch or doing another physical activity outdoors. After outdoor exercise, your Eskapoo should have no problem relaxing inside with the rest of the family. Interactive toys should be provided on rainy days and during times when your pooch needs to stay indoors more than usual. Obedience training can begin as early as about 2 months old , so you should start as soon as you bring your new pooch home. They need to practice obedience training throughout their lifetime to reinforce the behaviors that you expect of them. When older, Eskapoos can do well on the agility course, which offers exercise, mental stimulation, and a great opportunity to socialize with other dogs. If they take after their Poodle parent, they will likely need haircuts regularly to keep tangles and mats at bay. If your Eskapoo takes more after their American Eskimo parent, you can expect them to shed frequently and you will likely have to brush or comb them daily. But unfortunately, there are several serious conditions they are prone to that you should be aware of. Minor Conditions. Life Span Did You Know? These fluffy little dogs are affectionate and gentle. People tend to fall in love with their playful, energetic personalities. Although the Eskipoo is not currently recognized by the AKC, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations. These little dogs love to play, love to cuddle, and love nothing more than getting attention from their favorite humans. Their affectionate, gentle nature and playful, friendly personality make them a great fit for families. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they do tend to be open and friendly with strangers once introduced, they also tend to bark to alert you of people, animals, etc. Although they are high-energy dogs, Eskipoos are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in larger homes with fenced yards where they can run. Also, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. Because these small dogs bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not do well with long periods of time alone. This can also make them prone to separation anxiety if you do not work on this with them when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in an Eskipoo include luxating patella , diabetes, cataracts, Legg-Calve-Perthes, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma, and eyelash abnormalities. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents, and about any health tests that have been done. Eskipoos are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. Although they can get bored easily, they tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They thrive on positive praise and reward, and tend to work hard to gain attention from you. The Eskipoo coat still ranges from the curly Poodle coat to the longer, thicker American Eskimo coat. An American Eskimo coat will shed moderately year-round and heavier as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and the occasional bath is all this coat needs. Nail trims once or twice a month keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. Daily dental care , like brushing with dog-friendly toothpaste, helps prevent dental diseases later in life. Although these dogs tend to be little, they are not couch potatoes at all. In fact, they are high-energy dogs that require walks, playtime, and some time to run every day to be happy and healthy. Thankfully, they also tend to be versatile and athletic dogs that are up for almost anything if it means spending more time with you. Just make sure puppies finish growing and developing, and you get vet approval, before you tackle more intense, higher-impact activities. A fully-grown Eskipoo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Eskipoos generally live for years. An Eskipoo is also referred to as a Pookimo and an Eskapoo. Featured Eskipoo Article. Active families of all sorts; adaptable to apartments Temperament: Intelligent, Playful, Affectionate The Eskapoo inherits traits from both of their parents. You could have a dog that is very similar to a Poodle or nothing like one. They are usually medium-sized dogs, but their weight can vary widely. Most are the descendants of a Toy Poodle, but other types of Poodles can also be used. These dogs are pretty intelligent, which often makes them easy to train. They are active and require a bit of mental stimulation, though, so they can require more time from their owners. Because both of their parents are working dogs, they thrive when given a job to do. Many of them love water, taking after their Poodle ancestry. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Few breeders specialize in this breed. The large majority of breeders produce purebred dogs or one of the more popular mixed breeds. Most of the time, these puppies will be most common at shelters and rescues. Of course, the odds of a specific mixed breed showing up at an animal shelter near you are low. You may have to expand your search range and do a bit of travelling to get the dog you want. You may be able to locate a breeder or two that produce these puppies. However, this does mean that you have to tell them what to do. They need to work their brains and flex their intelligence. They are not dogs that you can leave alone for long periods. Great ways to keep them entertained include things like obedience training, puzzle toys, and canine sports. Setting up a miniature agility course in your backyard is a great way to keep them busy and entertained. On top of mental stimulation, these dogs need quite a bit of physical exercise as well. They work best for active families who have enough time to exercise these dogs properly. Barking and chewing are a common problem if they are not well taken care of. These dogs often keep their playfulness into adulthood. They often enjoy playtime over cuddling on the couch. They work best for families that would instead take a hike than a cuddle on the couch, as well. Generally, the Eskapoo is pretty calm and not extremely hyperactive — like some toy breeds. They do behave well inside and adapt to apartment living as long as their other needs are met. Without proper training, they can be a bit noisy. They will bark at people as they walk by and then love them the second they walk in the door. Active families with many people coming and going are often best, as this decreases the amount of time the dog is alone overall. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Their smaller size does lead to some difficulty with more minor children. This can lead to fear-based barking. One bad situation can lead to the dog not trusting small people for the foreseeable future. With the proper socialization, these dogs can get along with small children as long as they are supervised. They are great dogs for families with older children, especially if they are active and spend time romping around in a fenced-in backyard. They will happily follow children around and play, even well into their adult years. They are an excellent choice for elementary-aged children due to their smaller, manageable size. However, active families are best. They are good with dogs of all sorts as long as they are socialized at an early age. Like all dogs, they need to be introduced to other puppies starting at a young age to ensure that they know how to communicate with other canines appropriately. Otherwise, they will often be fearful of other dogs, which can cause aggression. However, when introduced to a wide variety of different breeds, they will often do just fine with smaller and larger dogs. Many of them are pretty pack-oriented and do best when they are with other dogs. They often have a pretty high prey drive, making them unsuitable for homes with cats and similar pets. They will chase these animals, especially since they have a high activity need. Of course, they will also chase other small pets, like rabbits. They can often stay healthy on a high-quality, commercially available dog food. Look for foods with high amounts of meat. The ingredient list of each food starts with the highest ingredient by weight and moves down from there. Check each ingredient list to ensure that the first few ingredients are meat. Of course, keep in mind the water content of the ingredients as well, which may artificially push them higher on the ingredient list. For instance, whole chicken contains a lot of water, which is removed while creating dry dog food. There may not be very much chicken in the food after considering the water content. The FDA has linked some heart problems to grain-free foods. However, anything is technically possible. They are very active dogs and work best in an active family. It is recommended that you plan on strenuous exercise at least an hour a day. This can be a long walk, job, or playtime. Many of these dogs love games like fetch, which can help wear them out without wearing you out. Training for some canine sports can also fulfill this need. Ample exercise is recommended. Otherwise, these dogs can exhibit destructive behaviors like digging and chewing. These dogs enjoy a fenced-in backyard, especially if you play games like fetch. However, they can adapt well to an apartment as long as their needs are met. A dog walker is almost required unless someone in the family is at home for much of the day and can take them on multiple walks. While these dogs do need lots of exercise, they cannot be put in a yard by themselves for an extended period. They need to be with their people. As people-oriented dogs, they can get a bit stir-crazy if they are isolated for long periods. They will learn commands quickly and obey them most of the time. They love obedience training and thrive in classes of all sorts. It is recommended that you enroll them in classes at a young age to challenge their mind and keep them mentally stimulated. Many train their dogs for canine sports like agility simply because they run out of ways to stimulate them otherwise mentally. These dogs make excellent therapy animals and can compete with success in just about any dog sport. The type of grooming they need primarily depends on what type of coat they have. However, most of them will have a high grooming need. Dogs with Poodle-like coats will need to be trimmed regularly by a groomer. Daily brushing is often required to prevent matting, even if your dog gets trimmer. A pin brush is often the best option for this, but it will depend mainly on the type of coat your dog has. Your dog may or may not shed. Some may shed a whole lot, while others will only shed a little bit. If your dog sheds, you will need to use a brush to remove much of the dead hair. They may shed more on some occasions than others, so you may need to increase your brushing sessions during these heavy-shedding periods. Too many baths can strip the oils from their skin and cause skin problems. For this reason, we recommend bathing them only when they are visibly dirty. For instance, dogs that roll in mud will need a bath. Dirty pond water and similar excursions will also call for a bath. Keep bathing to a minimum and use a sensitive shampoo that is formulated for dogs. This is especially true if trimming is required. Like all dogs, they will need their teeth brushed a few times a week and their nails cut when required. However, their nails can be done by a groomer if you are uncomfortable. Many purebred bloodlines have tiny gene pools, which is why breeds are pretty predictable. A Labrador Retriever will always act like a Labrador Retriever. However, this also means that rare genetic conditions become common. Mixed breeds can inherit genes from two different breeds, which effectively doubles their gene pool. This makes them a bit less predictable. However, it also has a direct effect on the genetic conditions they can inherit. They are much less likely to end up with a genetic condition that affects either dog breed. However, there are a few problems that may be prone to. For instance, patellar luxation is common in most small breeds. Since this dog is a bit smaller, they are more prone to it as well. This condition involves the kneecap being slightly misaligned. Usually, the kneecap sits in a unique groove. This can lead to pain walking, limping, and similar issues. It can be fixed with surgery, but this is often very expensive. There is a genetic component to this disease. However, it is present in both parent breeds so that a Eskapoo can inherit it from their parents in some cases. Ask any breeder about the parents of the dog and whether they have been health tested appropriately. Minor Conditions.

If your French bulldog is young, keep training sessions to about 5 minutes, increasing the time if your dog is older. Plan on doing 3 to 5 training sessions a day. Try to pick times when your dog isn't hungry or tired so your dog will be more focused on learning. Be consistent and patient with your dog. This command will come in useful when you need to teach your dog not to bite or chew natural tendencies for younger dogs. If your dog bites or nips you or you see your dog chewing, tap its nose lightly and say, "No bite" or "No chew. Lowell Ackerman. Have your dog stand in front of you and place a treat in your hand so your dog can see it in your palm. Firmly say, "sit" in a friendly voice while you push your dog's bottom down until your dog sits. Give your dog the treat immediately and tell it good job. Repeat this process by stepping away from your dog. Turn to face your dog and tell it to sit. Place your dog in a sit position while you put a treat in your hand. Make sure your dog knows you have the treat in your hand and put your hand near its nose. Move your hand to the floor while you say "down" or "lay down. As soon as your dog does or tries , give the treat and praise. Practice this command until your dog goes down consistently. If your young dog jumps to your attention or while playing, keep your dog on a leash to correct its behavior. As your dog starts to jump, command your dog to "sit" and reward. Your dog will learn not to jump on people. Edited by Julie Shaw and Debbie Martin. Have your dog sit and praise your dog when your dog obeys. Put your hand in front of its face like you're hand is a stop sign. Firmly say "stay" and back away slowly. If your dog starts to run to you, start again by commanding your dog to sit. Repeat the command to stay and back away again. Repeat this until your dog consistently obeys. Begin this command when your dog is playing or sniffing around a fenced area. Crouch down, slap your thighs and say "come" in a friendly voice. This will make your dog think you want to play and your dog will run over to play with you. When your dog does, reward it with a treat and lots of praise. Volume 3. Steven R. Blackwell Publishing. Landsberg, W. Hunthausen and L. This is a good way to test your dog's response to the command. If your dog begins barking and you need to silence your dog, keep a bag of treats handy. When your dog barks, take a treat out and say "quiet. It may take a while but eventually your dog will understand that you expect it to quiet down when you say quiet. Teach your dog to associate a clicking sound from a clicker device as a reward for following a command. To do this, click the device and give your dog a treat. Practice training your dog and whenever it obeys, click the device and give a treat. Eventually, your dog will associate correct behavior with the clicker sound. Once your dog is familiar with the clicker, you can wean your dog off the treats and clicking sound so that the dog just responds to the command and clicker. Train your Frenchie here! You should start training your French Bulldog puppy as soon as you get them home. Puppy brains are a lot bigger than we think — they soak up so much good information despite their young age. French Bulldogs can be a rather independent breed of dog. In fact, we sometimes might feel like we need them more than they need us! What age can I start to train my French Bulldog puppy? You can start training your French Bulldog puppy as soon as you get them home. Build positive training experiences with Zigzag! Before bringing your French Bulldog puppy home, you can also get in touch with our Zigzag puppy experts with any of the many questions you may have! While blingy collars and outfits might be top of the list, there are some more sensible things you need to get your French Bulldog puppy that will help with your training. Here are my top picks for getting prepared for training your Frenchie. My favourite all-rounder is the Rapid Rewards treat pouch , it comes in many colours and looks stylish when on. The Mikki treat pouch is also good and a bit cheaper. You can go to town and choose pretty colours and designs for Frenchies! A lead — Around 2m is a good length for a lead. A training lead is a good idea as you can change the lengths of them to suit. A comfortable mat or a piece of non-slip vet bed. Treats The more smelly, the better. Have a look at the best puppy treats here. Chews and chew toys — lots of them! Our faves for Frenchies are West Paw Toppl and hollow buffalo horns for stuffing food into, and cow ears and pizzles for edible chews. Two identical toys : Excellent for swaps — your French Bulldog puppy will be super playful and enjoy the retrieving games in the Zigzag app. Originally, French Bulldogs were bred from English Bulldogs, who had a shady past as bull-baiting dogs. People enjoyed their cheerful nature and kept them as companion dogs after these awful blood sports were prohibited. When the need for these workers declined in England, their skills were still required in France, so the workers relocated, bringing their dogs with them. Relocate your training to Zigzag! When they arrived in France, they were adored by shopkeepers, butchers, and, most infamously, Les Belles de Nuit — the ladies of the night! What does this have to do with how I train my French Bulldog? Knowing the characteristics of the breed will help you better train your Frenchie puppy and understand why they behave the way they do. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Frenchies are incredibly loving and enjoy being in the spotlight. They can have a lot of energy possibly even more than a lot of energy and enjoy an active home life. Lack of stimulation WILL foster self-employment; provide them with items to rip up and pull apart to keep them out of trouble. By the way, if you leave them to it, they WILL go into your recycling and have a field day. Frenchies often think they are big dogs, thus they often do well playing with dogs larger than them. They look dashing in them too! Training your French Bulldog 4 training tips to make your stubborn French Bulldog obedient French Bulldogs display strong unwillingness for training, making exercise stressful and frustrating for the them and the human at times. While they are playful and gentle, their stubbornness is on another level compared to other dog breeds and can be challenging to train at times. There are ways of getting your Frenchie to learn to obey your commands. Here are simple strategies to train your adorable Bulldog. Breeders usually re-home their Frenchie Bulldog as early as 8 weeks old. Immediately after bringing your French Bulldog home start with potty training your puppy. Designate a special potty area and stick to it. Take your puppy every 2 hours as Frenchie puppies cant hold their needs for longer than that when they are that young. You want the dog to start learning potty manners as early as possible to prevent future problems. If you allow your Frenchie to do their needs elsewhere it will complicate matters for you later. Frenchies are extremely intelligent and will resort to their own way of doing things if not trained otherwise. Your French Bulldog needs positive Reinforcements through Verbal and Physical Rewards French Bulldogs are highly emotional and can become sad when scolded. These dogs were bred to please, so any negative feedback hits them hard. Whenever the dog does the right thing without your guidance, reward your Frenchie bountifully. Stay positive always to build a trustworthy and positive relationship. Socialize your Frenchie with other dogs You want your pup to become fully integrated with your family as quickly as possible. Start integrating the dog into your household from the day of arrival. Frenchies love noise and activity, so let them play around and explore. On the same token it is crucial that your dog socialize with other dogs early on. You want your Frenchie to be able to play and be around dogs without aggression or issues that might come later in adulthood if not properly socialized. Use the proper Frenchie training tools Frenchies are brachycephalic dogs and this predisposes them to respiratory disorders. We would never recommend a training collar for this reason. Walking a brachy breed with a collar can disrupt airflow and even make the dogs eyes pop out of their socket or potentially cause other trachea injuries. According to the Humane Society of the US it is the safest to use a harness to restrain your Frenchie. A harness allows the dog to breath freely with little or no obstructions. Our Health Harness was designed for brachycephalic dogs. It makes for a great training tool without the dangers found in common pet accessories. The Health Harness is designed with dual D rings and double zink alloy buckles to provide a safe, no-choke, no-pull walk. The front D ring makes it ideal for training dogs that like to pull, along with those that have aggression and dominance issues. If you want your pooch to have a comfortable life, a quality Frenchie harness is an excellent investment. Train your dog how to walk besides you early on to avoid frustration in the future. Even if your dog is full grown our specialty designed Health Harness can make all the difference in the world. Frenchies are one of the most popular dog breeds on the planet. Miniature yet with giant characters, these adorable pooches are playful, intelligent, yet extremely stubborn. We believe that if you follow these 4 simple tips of training your Frenchie you can lead a healthy and positive relationship with your pooch. How to deal with an aggressive and dominant Frenchie? Tips and advice We received the following email asking for our advice in regards to an aggressive and dominant French Bulldog We adopted our Frenchie ex-breeder Mom almost 5 years ago. For example: Before Dixie, our two females rarely fought. And my pug would at least occasionally let me hold her. Now she tries to jump down immediately or else my bully will attempt to jump up on whoever holds her and attack her. Dixie also often growls when being pet and loved on, whereas any other dog would eat up the attention. And she seems to hate feet. Just wondered if you had any tips or suggestions at all. When we picked Dixie up from rescue she was sweet and timid, compliant and cuddly. Hi Lorrie: From reading your question there are a few key points you already know and are pointing out in your question which I would like to re-affirm: Dixie wants to be the alpha and the boss, wants to control the environment and the situation. Whoever is not in line with how she wants them to behave she will show aggression. First and foremost I would like you to ensure there is nothing medically or physically wrong with Dixie that will make her hostile or change her in anyways. The following tips will be given on the assumption that there is nothing wrong medically and her behavior changed over time due to her taking a certain role in the household that she feels is lacking. It is important to go back to the beginning and ask in what way you introduced her to the pack. It seems like the introduction was immediate and without much adjustment time. You say that she was originally going to be your daughter's dog and that didn't work out. This fact alone gives me an insight into the situation. Since things didn't work out the way they were planned I'm sure you were a bit puzzled and that rubbed off on Dixie. It seems that when she was added to the rest of the dogs in your household that created imbalance. From Dixie point of view she has taken the role of the mom and leader in the household and whoever is out of line she "disciplines" them by putting them in their place. It also seems like you are scared of her reaction and avoid doing certain things that will upset Dixie which is not helping the problem. We have a few recommendations to help this situation and they will all start and end with the one concept of you becoming the alpha and leader of the pack. When leaving your home with a hostile Frenchie You need to be the first leaving out of the door not any of the other dogs. Open the door slightly just for you to be able to stand in the opening, exercise standing there in front of your dogs while your dogs are still in the house for 1 minute increase by 1 minute daily until your dogs understand and wait patiently for 3 minutes without trying to trip you or escape first. This exercise will be hard to do at first but your dogs will soon learn you are the boss. In time you will be able to open the door wider and wider without them trying to be out of the door first. December 6, In search of a new forever best friend? Not sure what puppy breed works best for you and your family? Quickly rising in the popularity ranks to spot number two, the French bulldog or more commonly known for their nickname Frenchie is a bundle of cute, silliness, and affection! This compact, low-activity, lap companion is a perfect fit for puppy parents that like a relaxed lifestyle! How do you know if the French Bulldog is the right fit for you and your family? A Brief Background on French Bulldogs! When it comes to French Bulldogs, not where they originally come from! These pups actually made their way over to France from England and were actually Toy Bulldogs. During the mid s, lacemakers from Nottingham, England traveled to Paris bringing along their toy bulldogs and cross-breeding them with bull-baiting bulldogs to gain those tall erect bat ears Frenchies have today! Soon, their popularity in France spread as more Parisian women introduced these pups a staple into city, cafe-culture. What are French Bulldog Breed Characteristics? French Bulldogs have short snouts, round adorable bodies and short legs, square-shaped faces but the most undeniably French Bulldog quality.Although these characteristics breed standard, French Bulldogs come in a variety of colorings including white, cream, tan, grey, black, brown, blue, multi-color, fawn, brindle, merle, lilac, and combinations of each of these! What are French Bulldog Personalities like? These pups have silly personalities, love to play, and can settle right up next to your lap. Unlike the common yappy small dog stereotype, Frenchies are quite affectionate and even-tempered. They love their human families, seek companionship, and enjoy playing with their people. If you were looking for a pup that was thrill-seeking and had a protective quality to their nature, French Bulldogs are far more content with a walk, quick game of tug-of-way or fetch, and would probably rather play with new people and dogs than be protective. While they are relatively easy-going, they can have a bit of a stubborn streak so be prepared with obedience training and to coax your Frenchie with some treats! Much like their early days, French Bulldogs are a great choice for puppy parents living in urban, city environments like apartment buildings. Frenchies, while they love to play, are what is known as a brachycephalic breed. High activity can cause them to overheat and they will have difficulty panting to cool off. While the idea of letting your French Bulldog puppy cool off in water seems right, no swimming for these pups. If you live somewhere with a pool or close to a lake, be mindful of your Frenchie, and even keep a protective float or vest on them! All in all, a home that provides space in a room to play, or walks around the neighborhood or in a park are just what Frenchies need to burn off their energy and keep entertained! How to Care for Your French Bulldog! French Bulldogs, like many short-snouted dogs, can suffer from respiratory issues such as wheezing, snoring, and over-heating in warmer temperatures. While their short coats are generally low-maintenance, French Bulldogs can suffer from eye infections and infections in the folds of their skin. Keeping their eyes clean, regular brushing with a rubber glove, and making sure their skin is completely dry after bathing can significantly help prevent these issues! When you first bring home your new French Bulldog puppy, set up an initial visit with your veterinarian to discuss French Bulldog breed nutritional needs, preventive care, and schedule their vaccinations! Thanks to their adorable looks, French Bulldogs receive a lot of affection from their humans. Basic Obedience and Tricks French Bulldogs are fun and easy-to-train breed! However, some Frenchie parents may find bouts of stubbornness such as refusing to take another step on a walk or not coming when called! If you start to experience this with your Frenchie puppy, try to keep them on a leash while under supervision at home to have them follow you and start to establish leadership. Since these pups love a good playtime session, teaching them some fun tricks is a great way to keep them engaged while still working on listening and following your lead! Potty Train Right Away With the right consistency and patience, all puppies can be potty trained! Some French Bulldog puppies may take a bit longer to master pottying in a specific spot so start from the very first day your puppy comes home! Pick a designated spot, start bringing your puppy there every time they have to go potty, and supervise them at home, or crate them at night to prevent accidents! As companion dogs, French Bulldogs can develop separation anxiety so establishing crate times during the day and at night will help your puppy start to feel comfortable being alone and boost their level of confidence. Set times for feeding, play, puppy training, and sleep will provide your puppy with routine and structure, encouraging good behaviors and fewer chances of your puppy developing bad habits. A daily schedule also makes certain things such as potty times far more predictable for you and helps to speed up the potty training process. Lastly, a set routine creates a well-adjusted puppy that will grow up confident, healthy, and happy! One of the best things about a daily puppy schedule is that you can establish one that aligns with your own! Teach them "Drop-It! One of the fastest and most fun! Our Mission To rescue and re-home Retrievers and find new, loving homes for them. We have positioned Fetchin' Retrievers Rescue to partner with veterinarians, dog trainers, groomers, and other rescue groups as a resource for these professionals and organizations if they encounter dogs in need. Your contribution will help us whether you foster, adopt, donate, or volunteer! Fetchin' Retrievers Rescue will take the very young to the very old, the very sick to the unwanted. Every dog is an individual and will be placed in a home that meets their needs and where their individuality can thrive. Andy's foster - to - adopt success story written by his forever family: "Early in , we started the process to find our Golden Retriever girl a companion and adopt a rescue dog in need of a good home. We submitted an application to FRR and subsequently had a virtual home visit. We were impressed by the thoroughness of both, as it gave us confidence that FFR clearly had the best interest of their animals in mind. While the timing was less than ideal due to some upcoming summer plans, we agreed to foster one of the pups for as long as three weeks. Two days later, a tiny black male pup with a spotted white chest was delivered to our home. He looked like he is wearing a tuxedo. He came with the name, Andy. He was a world-class cuddler who immediately began to work his way into our hearts. Our golden retriever soon welcomed him into our home as well. Within a couple of weeks, it became apparent that this foster puppy was going to be adopted as a member of our family. It also became apparent that Andy was the perfect name for him. It just fit, not only in his cute appearance but also in his behavior and antics. Andy was one of a number of puppies that we have brought into our home over the years, and we have always been sticklers about health, wellness and neutering. So, it was great to see that FFR also insisted on this same level of care and attention. Andy is now 6 months old. He has adapted well to our home and lifestyle. He has even traveled with us to our Idaho home for three months. He is still all puppy: filled with the energy, entertaining antics, and occasional mischief that make puppies fun. He and our golden retriever are now fast friends, so our efforts to find her a companion have been richly rewarded. He has a desire to please, and he has learned basic commands and to walk well on leash and to heel faster than any dog we have had. Foster-to-adopt worked really well for our family. Thanks to FFR and all their dedicated staff for helping us bring Andy into our home. Click here for more information. Walk for the Dogs with ResQWalk! They are intelligent, easy to train, affectionate, and form strong bonds with their owners. They do so for two reasons: They inherit a strong protective instinct from German Shepherds. They inherit a strong hunting instinct from Jack Russells. German Shepherds have been used as herding dogs. They had to protect sheep from predators [1]. This enhanced their territorial behavior. German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes bark loudly. They inherit this trait from both parent breeds, making them great at signaling danger. German Shepherds are the 3rd most intelligent breed when it comes to obedience and working intelligence [2]. The Jack Russell Terrier ranked 46th. Even if they are not among the best-ranked breeds, they still have above-average intelligence. As a result, Shepherd Jack Russells easily understand what humans want them to do. This makes them easy to train. While German shepherds are highly trainable, Jack Russells can become stubborn and are easily distracted. Still, the mixes are easy to train, especially if you are patient. Related: Are Jack Russells Smart? A velcro dog likes to spend their time as close to its owners as possible. Still, they are highly affectionate and loving towards their family members when they are together. As a result, a Shepherd Jack Russell has a dense undercoat, covered by a short or medium outer coat. German Shepherd Jack Russell mix dogs shed both their undercoats and outercoats. They grow from the same hair follicle. This means when the hair follicles end their cycle, all old hairs growing from them fall out. Shepherd Jack Russells shed most during spring and autumn. This is when they need daily brushing if you want your home hair-free. Related: Do Jack Russells Shed? If their needs are not met, they become hyperactive. Consider the following when Shepherd Jack Russells have a hard time settling down: The dog can be understimulated. They are hyperactive because of their breed drive. They are not suited for busy or sedentary people. Jack Russell Terriers have learned to bark a lot and loudly as they use barking to signal dangers they perceive in their environment. German Shepherds bark to communicate with other animals and humans. German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes are also loud. This crossbreed is most often the result of accidental mating. The year and place where this first happened are unknown. German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes are not designer dogs. Designer dogs are the result of the intentional breeding of two different breeds, while this mix is often the result of accidents. There are breeders who do this with Jack Russells and German Shepherd but it is not recommended. The difference in size between the breeds can lead to several health issues for the mother. The breeders that do intentionally breed this mix use female German Shepherds and male Jack Russells. This is done for the safety of the dogs. The purpose of the breed was to hunt foxes. This color was desired as hunters had to differentiate the dogs from their prey. Jack Russell Terriers are currently bred for companionship and vermin control. They have been recognized as a separate breed since by the British Kennel Club. The breed is included in the Parson Russell Terrier category. In the s, the need for a sheep herd dog led breeders to crossbreed several traditional herding dogs from Germany. This crossbreeding process resulted in the German Shepherd. It has since become one of the most popular dogs in the United States. In , German Shepherds were the 4th most popular breed in America. They are usually black and brown or black and red. They can have markings and white patches, depending on the genes they inherit. These dogs have short or medium-length coats with thick undercoats. Jack Russells are between 10 and 15 inches tall and German Shepherds are between 22 and 26 inches tall. The outcome is a mix that ranges between 10 and 26 inches in height. They can weigh between 14 and 90 pounds. These measurements are general guidelines. As crossbreeds inherit traits from both parents, their weigh and height ranges are high. Considering the high difference in size, German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes fall somewhere in the middle. They are double-coated, and their undercoats are dense and smooth. The outer coats of Shepherd Jack Russells are smooth or wired. Although German Shepherds can have long coats, there are zero chances for a German Shepherd Jack Russell mix to be long-coated. The gene for long hair in dogs is recessive, meaning both parents have to pass on the gene for the puppy to have long hair. Jack Russells do not have this gene. The color of the parents indicate the color of their puppies. The essential aspect one needs to consider is that Jack Russells are not primarily white. The primary color of a Jack Russell is usually a combination of black, brown, and tan. The majority of German Shepherds are black and brown, or black and red. By combining these two breeds, puppies are most likely to inherit the following colors: Black Brown Red German Shepherd Jack Russells can be bi or tri-colored if they inherit the gene that gives white patches from Jack Russells On rare occasions, Shepherd Jack Russells are pure white. This happens only if the German Shepherd parent is pure white. Melanistic Mask Shepherd Jack Russell mix dogs can have dark face masks called melanistic masks [4]. These masks require both parents to pass on the gene for this specific color pattern. Both Jack Russells and German Shepherds can carry the gene. They are affectionate with their family members and love spending time with them. The results showed that the evolution depends on the purpose a dog breed has. Dogs bred for various purposes pass on the traits necessary to perform their tasks well. In other words, this mix has traits suited for hunting and herding, making them protective, territorial, and wary of strangers. In time, their purpose changed to vermin control. This mixed breed inherits the following hunting temperament traits from Jack Russells: They are obedient. They quickly understand what humans want from them. They are eager to please. They are intelligent. Herding dogs are not used as work tools, but rather as intermediaries. They are believed to possess a deeper understanding of the animals they herd [6]. This is why the relationship between humans and herding dogs is more like a collaboration. This mixed breed inherits the following herding temperament traits from German Shepherds: They are loyal. They work well with humans. They are protective. German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes have a predisposition for aggressive behavior. Aggressive behavior in dogs has a genetic component. A study [7] conducted on 23 dog breeds places Jack Russells 17th in terms of aggression. The German Shepherd is the 4th most aggressive dog breed in this study. This means that Shepherd Jack Russells are most likely to display aggressive behavior. The discussion around aggressive behavior leads to biting behavior. German Shepherds are popular dogs, which influences the relevance of this analysis. Aggressive behavior can be prevented and controlled. You can achieve this by engaging your dog in regular physical exercise and feeding it a proper diet. Early socialization and training also help. Their average lifespan is between 12 to 16 years. Still, these dogs are prone to several health issues, especially as seniors. To keep them healthy, make sure they get enough exercise and mental stimulation. Good nutrition is also an essential factor to consider. Conclusion German Shepherd Jack Russells are loyal and smart. They are loving companions and make great watchdogs. If they are trained and socialized in puppyhood, these dogs are less likely to display behavior issues. Still, they inherit the genes for aggression. Shepherd Jack Russells are great for active families because they require a lot of physical exercise. Other Jack Russell Mix Breeds. Black, black and tan, liver, blue, sable, bi-colored Suitable for: Singles and families, homes with yards, active owners Temperament: Smart, loyal, active, playful, protective Understanding this playful mixed breed means learning about both the German Shepherd and the Jack Russell Terrier, as their offspring will likely take on traits from both breeds. We break down everything that you need to know about both parent breeds and ultimately, this interesting mixed breed dog. They grow quickly due to their German Shepherd genes, but they typically do not get nearly as big as a purebred German Shepherd does. Some are thin and wiry, and others are thick and smooth-coated. It all depends on the traits that a Jack Russell Terrier German Shepherd mix inherits from their parents. When you bring a Jack Russel Terrier German Shepherd into your home, you can expect to have a loyal and protective dog by your side. They love to learn, which makes them relatively easy to train, but training should start during puppyhood. These dogs are playful like their Jack Russell parents yet protective like their German Shepherd parents. They are loyal to their human companions, both children and adults, and will stand guard over them whenever a threat is perceived. These designer dogs are sociable and enjoy playing with kids in the yard whenever the opportunity arises. They can also settle down and cuddle when spending time indoors with family members. When it comes to interacting with others, these dogs are typically welcoming both at home and in outdoor social situations. Are These Dogs Good for Families? This mixed breed can get along with other dogs that do not live within their household if they start socializing with them from a young age. A Jack Russell Terrier German Shepherd mix should start meeting other dogs from the time that they are just a few weeks old, to ensure that they do not become skittish or aggressive while around other pooches later in life. These dogs may or may not get along with cats and other animals that live inside their household. Early introductions, training, and supervision can all increase the chance that your mixed pooch will get along with other smaller pets. You should also know what to expect when it comes to training and grooming. There are also health conditions that these dogs are susceptible to. Commercial dog food that contains animal protein as the first ingredient and does not include any fillers, like corn and soy, or artificial ingredients is the best option. Fresh vegetables, such as grated carrots and chunks of boiled sweet potato, can be offered as supplemental snacks occasionally. Fresh water should always be available. When in doubt about what to feed your pooch, consult with your veterinarian to get a customized diet plan to follow. They should go on walks daily and have an opportunity to play in a fenced yard or run around in a public dog park. Time playing hide-and-seek or training indoors when the weather is bad will get these dogs through the day without becoming too bored or destructive. Since they are smart and eager to please, these dogs typically take well to training and can learn to come, sit, and stay quickly. They also take well to obedience and guard training, although professional training may be required to get them started. These dogs do not typically get knots or mats, but bathing might be necessary after a day outside. They should get enough outdoor exercise to keep their nails naturally trimmed, but if the nails become long and sharp, trimming should take place. Dental chews can help keep the teeth and gums healthy as time goes on. Minor Conditions. Hypoallergenic No History The terrier is a hard-working English dog. It was named after John Russell, an avid hunter who crossbred different strains in order to create the perfect hound for chasing the game and flushing it out from cover or rather biting its foot without killing it! The shorter variety remains Jack Appearance German Shepherd Jack Russell mixes are a playful, loyal and protective breed that has the appearance of one or both parent breeds. They also have an intelligent temperament making them easy to train as well! They seem to do very well with children as well as other animals! They need to brush them three times per week in the spring and fall months with regular vacuuming for allergies! German Shepherds bark to communicate with other animals and humans, but they can also be very loud. To make sure your pet has enough energy, serve them meals packed with vitamins and minerals as well! Give your pet 1. Make sure the kibble contains essential minerals like salt or vitamins so that their bodies stay strong with all this hard work they do for us every day and night. One thing I always recommend when buying topical products such as lotions is also including calcium supplementation because our skin becomes less effective over time without these nutrients helping repair damage from outside elements such as weather factors. Health Problems Hip and elbow dysplasia is a condition that affects the German Shepherd, and Jack Russell terrier breeds. Your pup needs to be healthy and happy. The cost of a Jack Russell German Shepherd hybrid puppy can vary depending on many factors. For example, you may pay more to buy one from an established breeder who has been breeding these dogs for years rather than purchasing your pup at Petco or Walmart! You may want to take a look at the breeder before buying your new furry friend. Wrapping Jack Russell Terrier German Shepherd mixes are one of a kind, high energy dogs that need plenty of attention and love to thrive. These hybrids have the protective instincts typical in GSDs but also boast playfulness as terriers do! Post navigation. However, a mix could be on the larger size if it takes more after its GSD parent and more on the smaller size if it takes more after the Jack Russell parent. They also can have a rough or broken coat too. German Shepherds have a double coat of medium to long length ranging in colors from black and tan, all black , sable, liver, blue , and bi-colored. A mix between the breeds can create either the shorter coat of the Jack Russel or a medium-length coat more similar to the German Shepherds. The coloring of the coat will depend on whether the pup takes more after their GSD parent or their Jack Russel parent. A German Shepherd Jack Russell mix will need to be brushed once a week. They may need to be brushed more frequently like two or three times a week in the spring and fall during shedding season. Baths can be given every weeks, nails should be clipped about once a month, and their teeth should be brushed regularly. Bite Force German Shepherds have a strong bite force at around psi. A mix of these two breeds will likely lead to a dog with a bite force in the mid to upper s, but some of this depends on whether the pup takes more after their GSD parent or their Jack Russell parent. German Shepherd typically run about 32 miles per hour, and a Jack Russell runs at a speed of about 30 miles per hour. Thus, you can expect a Jack Russell German Shepherd mix to run between miles per hour. Expect them to need a minimum of one hour of physical activity each day, as well as some time for mental stimulation. Since both breeds are smart a Jack Russell GSD mix will thrive in households that focus on training and provide opportunities for them to mind. Temperament The German Shepherd Jack Russell mix can be an excellent family dog and can also be good with other dogs , and even cats given the proper socialization. This dog will be energetic with a spunky personality, friendly , love to play, courageous, loyal, vocal, have the drive to work, and loving and affectionate. Both German Shepherds and Jack Russell are vocal dog breeds so expect a cross between the two to produce a dog that likes to bark , whine , groan and maybe even howl from time to time. This is typically caused because of excess gas or too much food or fluids. Additionally, they are also prone to hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Jack Russell Terriers are known to have eye issues such as dislocation of their eye lens. Basically, the lens becomes unattached from the ligaments that hold them in place. Additionally, they are also prone to tracheal collapse and pancreatitis. Although some of these conditions sound scary, all dog breeds are prone to some health issues. Being aware of the potential issues with both breeds of a mixed pup will help you know what to look out for during their lifetime. This lifespan is based upon the life expectancy of both breeds. Accordingly, a mix between the two is usually either the result of accidental mating or artificial insemination by a breeder that intentionally wants to create this mix. Final Thoughts A German Shepherd Jack Russell mix is a great dog to add to your family, but they may be difficult to find as there are not many breeders who actively cross these two breeds. You can also see how the Doberman , Dutch Shepherd , Husky and Australian Shepherd compare to the German Shepherd if you are considering other breeds altogether. The size of the dog is not predictable even if the same dogs are bred together more than once. The results of this cross have been producing dogs that have a great instinct to protect their loved ones. This is a mix that loves to walk on streets and in yards and gardens. They seem to do very well with children as well as other animals. As with any dog, purebred or mixed breed, there are certain qualities you want to look for to make it the ideal family pet. They possess strengths and weaknesses that can be compensated for or modified. Dog trainer, Sarah Wilson, suggests certain qualities should be intact from the beginning that will make a dog a more personable and pleasant pet. Your dog should love people When you meet a new puppy or dog that adores everyone, wags its tail nonstop, and approaches people of all sizes and ages, this is not just a result of socialization. Those types of dogs do not need to be purebred and come in every size, color, and mix. A dog that is not able to self-soothe will bark at noises and then continue to bark until you make him stop. This can be miserable. You want a dog who will eagerly greet guests, but then be willing to go lie down. A dog who can self-calm may cry the first few times when crated, but will eventually fall asleep and be able to fall into a comfortable routine. This is a good sign of a dog who can self-soothe. Choose a dog who is life-resilient This a term used by experts who train Seeing-Eye Dogs. It is a temperament test. Puppies are exposed to something new three times. The test is to see if the puppies are calmer or get more startled with each repetition. A good dog will tolerate other dogs The ideal dog does not have to love every dog he meets, but he should not be aggressive toward others. While training can alleviate or make the aggressiveness less, it is not easy and it is very time-consuming. Sarah understands that finding a dog with these qualities is a gift. Success has been had with mixing Shepherds with Terriers and producing a mid-sized dog that is not only personable but quite athletic. The Daily Puppy has a YouTube video that will melt your heart and make you want to own one of these unique mixes. Be aware that the potential exists for a puppy to strongly favor either breed or its characteristics. German Shepherd The Shepherd personality is very active. They are very intelligent and are easy to train and have strong guarding instincts. They do require a lot of exercise or they may become hyperactive. Physical attributes: Weight: between 75 and 95 pounds Height: 23 to 25 inches Naturally upright ears Longevity: 10 to 12 years Exercise needed: 40 minutes a day Desire to bark: low Desire to dig: moderate German Shepherds were bred for herding animals and as guard dogs. They have a medium-length double coat and they shed heavily twice a year, and minimally on a continuous basis. They come in most colors and require moderate grooming. You can expect German Shepherds to be large, powerful dogs with a strong guarding instinct. They need to be socialized at an early age and obedience trained to help channel their intelligence and instincts in a positive direction. Shepherds should be integrated with family members and exposed to pets and people around the neighborhood while under supervision. They do not have a good personality for being confined to a backyard or kennel with other dogs or alone. Jack Russell Terrier Jack Russell has a strong personality and is not a breed for everyone. Jack Russells are extremely energetic and require lots of exercise. They tend to be very vocal because of their instincts as hunters. They love to explore and have a tendency to bolt and wander. Physical attributes: Weight: between 13 and 17 pounds Height: 13 to 14 inches Energy level: Extremely energetic Longevity: 13 to 15 years Exercise needed: 40 minutes a day Desire to bark: high Desire to dig: moderate Jack Russells were bred for fox hunting. They have short, double coats, with white, black, and tan markings. Their need for grooming is low but they have three different coat types. All three coats smooth, rough, and straight long hair do shed. This breed is compact and muscular. They are very happy and energetic dogs that love to work. The dogs that have a job to do are the happiest. They do love to dig, especially if they pick up the scent of a rodent. Hunting ground animals are in their breeding and un-training this instinct is nearly impossible. Because they are hunting dogs, Jack Russells will be vocal. They make great watchdogs as they are always alert. They are not the best dogs for young children because they are assertive. They tend to be aggressive when they meet other dogs. Since this breed needs lots of exercises, a home with a very large fenced-in yard is the best environment for this dog. They can get along with other family pets if they are introduced to them as puppies. These dogs will be the happiest when going for a long hike or playing fetch. They are not good dogs for those who like to stay indoors and spend the day on the couch. The puppy was a result of an accidental breeding between a Jack Russell and a German Shepherd living in the same household. Five puppies were born. The owners of the puppy said he had a very sweet nature and was a quick learner. Yahoo forum answers what you can expect from this breed, from an owner of this mix. Frequently Asked Questions How big will a German shepherd terrier mix get? How big the German Shepherd terrier mix will get all depends on the type of terrier the German shepherd is mixed with. Adopting a dog is a big commitment. Adopting a mixed breed can be intimidating and daunting. Not to mention, if you are planning to adopt a dog breed mixed with the Jack Russell Terrier or the German Shepherd, you are sure to have your hands full. The Jack-Shepherd is the remarkable result of crossing the intelligent and loyal German Shepherd with the energetic and sprightly Jack Russell Terrier. Stepping into the realm of mixed breeds , the Jack-Shepherd is a blend of brains and boundless energy, standing out as a truly unique canine. However, it is important to realize that this mix breed is not for the faint of heart. You have plenty you need to understand about the Jack Russell Terrier and German Shepherd mix to ensure you can provide adequate care and to ensure this is the dog for you. The rest of this discussion is going to dive deeper into the two remarkable breeds that contributed to the creation of the Jack-Shepherd. By the end of the discussion, you should understand a brief history of the breed, in addition to understand what it takes to provide care for this unique mix if you do plan to adopt. Lets dive into those details now. Compact but full of life, Jack Russells have an unmistakable spirit. Developed in the late 19th century by Max von Stephanitz, this breed is celebrated for its intelligence, bravery, and versatility. German Shepherds are known to be large, powerful dogs with a keen instinct to work. These two parent breeds bring together a rich history and a set of distinct traits that make the Jack-Shepherd a truly unique canine companion. However, what we are here to cover is what you can expect from the two dog breeds when they are bred as a mix. As a mixed breed, the size of the Jack-Shepherd can vary significantly. However, typically, they could weigh anywhere between 25 to 80 pounds, with a height that ranges from 15 to 24 inches. Coats and Grooming The coat of the Jack-Shepherd can be as diverse as its parent breeds. Grooming needs for this mixed breed will depend largely on which parent they take after. On the other hand, if they lean more towards the Jack Russell, their grooming needs might be less demanding, requiring only occasional brushing. However, regular ear checks and nail trims will be essential for all Jack-Shepherds. Remember, each Jack-Shepherd is unique, and their appearance can vary greatly. This diversity is part of what makes mixed breeds so incredibly special and appealing. Behavior and Temperament The Jack-Shepherd is a vibrant mix of energy and intelligence. They may inherit the tireless energy of the Jack Russell Terrier and the diligence of the German Shepherd. This breed mix is usually highly active, eager to work, and loves engaging in physical activities. As someone who owns and raises a Jack Russell Terrier I can tell you that you can either have a dog that is going to test you daily and be a tough dog to raise or one of the best dogs you can choose to adopt. All of this will hinge on your training routines and your ability to remain patient with the dog during the early stages. This is when a dog breed such as the Jack-Shepherd can be molded into a loyal, well-behaved and highly intelligent dog to adopt. This is one of the key areas of focus I made sure to emphasize heavily early on with my Jack Russell Terrier and it made a huge difference. The more the better. Early socialization with various people, sights, sounds, and experiences can help them grow into well-rounded dogs. Encourage positive interactions with other animals and humans from a young age. Regular walks, trips to the dog park, or enrolling them in puppy classes can provide excellent socialization opportunities. Without socialization you run the risk of more anxiety in certain situations arising later that can be difficult to overcome for you and the dog. However, they might inherit a stubborn streak from the Jack Russell side, which could make training challenging at times. Consistent, positive reinforcement methods work best with this breed. Remember to be patient, keep training sessions short and fun, and always reward good behavior. Agility training could also be an excellent outlet for their high energy levels. Given the right socialization and training, the Jack-Shepherd can make a loyal, intelligent, and dynamic pet. Part of being capable of providing the proper care is understanding what it takes to keep this dog happy from a physical standpoint, a mental standpoint and being aware of basic health concerns. Lets cover some of those basics now. Exercise Needs As a high-energy breed mix, the Jack-Shepherd requires plenty of exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Ideally, they should get at least 1 to 2 hours of physical activity daily. This could be a combination of walks, playtime, and mental stimulation exercises like puzzle toys. A well-exercised Jack-Shepherd is less likely to develop behavioral problems and is generally more content. If I could hammer home any one area of focus from this discussion, it would be to absolutely ensure you have the time or ability to provide a dog such as the Jack-Shepherd plenty of exercise. Health Concerns While the Jack-Shepherd can be generally healthy, they may be prone to certain health conditions inherited from their parent breeds. These could include hip and elbow dysplasia, common in many larger breeds like the German Shepherd, or deafness and eye conditions, which can sometimes be seen in Jack Russell Terriers. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet can help maintain their overall health and catch any potential issues early. The key to a healthy Jack-Shepherd is consistent care and a good understanding of their needs. This mix breed, with their energy and intelligence, will certainly keep their owners on their toes! Adoption and Cost Adopting a Jack-Shepherd can be a thrilling journey. Look for breeders who conduct health checks on their breeding dogs and who raise their pups in a clean, nurturing environment. Always ask to see the parents and where the puppies are kept. Good breeders will be more than happy to answer any questions you have and provide proof of health clearances. Be sure to consider all the financial aspects and responsibilities involved before you decide to adopt. With their energetic nature and love for playtime, they can be a hit with children. However, due to their high energy levels and potential size, supervision with younger children is always a good idea to ensure safe play for both the child and the dog. Remember, the Jack-Shepherd, like any dog, requires commitment, love, and care to thrive as a family pet. With the right training, socialization, and understanding, they can make an entertaining, loyal, and loving member of your family. They bring together the best of both worlds — the bravery and diligence of the German Shepherd, and the fearless and lively spirit of the Jack Russell Terrier. The Jack-Shepherd inherits fascinating physical traits from both parent breeds, creating a delightful mix that is truly unique to each dog. Their behavior and temperament can be a lively mix of both parents, resulting in a brave, alert, and energetic companion. Proper care, including adequate exercise and regular health check-ups, are essential to ensure a happy and healthy Jack-Shepherd. Adoption requires not just a financial commitment but also an understanding of the responsibilities of pet ownership. Luna and I wish you the best of luck if you do intend to adopt a Jack-Shepherd in the near future. Josh founded TerrierOwner. Recent Posts.

The Stock coat has an undercoat, which sheds out twice per year - seasonally. It means a coat is 'plushier' than the short coat, and is preferred more in the show ring. It's basically is a longer, fuller coat. This term can be used on a Stock Coat short or Long Stock long coat dogs, depending on who is using it. Image: Chelsey V. The undercoat will be thinner in the summer and thicker in winter. As a puppy, you can not tell how long it will be. Long and full is desired with sort of a lions mane. It will not grow as long or thick in hotter climates. These dogs are stunning and in high demand. It parts down the middle of the back. It is soft, sort of fly away hair, light and very long. There is never an undercoat. It has long hair or feathering on the ears, legs, and tail. A puppy inherits only one gene form each parent. A long coat has been considered undesirable for many decades, and historically there were just short stock dogs used in breeding and selection. This puppy was considered a fault in the litter. A long coat is demonstrated only when a dog is homozygous on gene "l" - has pair of recessive l alleles at this locus. This is done to have more predictability in breeding, as mating between heterozygous dogs is highly unpredictable and has a large variety of possible outcome from producing puppies of pure short stock LL , to carriers Ll and Pure Long Coat ll. While this seems like a great idea to outcross all heterozygous on the Locus L dogs from breeding programs, this will take some time. Many "plush" dogs are very active in breeding, as frankly, they look great and thicker coat is an added benefit to those breeders that still do not accept Long Coat dogs. Large probability is only scary to those that do not understand how to predict the outcome. We enjoy learning and studying and have pretty clear understanding of what to expect in our breeding. Vom Geliebten Haus. Our breeding program has earned the the highest level of accomplishments that a kennel in the United States can achieve. Nadelhaus breeds purebred German Shepherds year round and we also import both German Shepherd puppies and adults direct from Europe for our clients. Long-haired German Shepherds are technically called a long coat German Shepherd, while a short-haired German Shepherd is called a normal coat or stock coat German Shepherd. Dogs with either coat have the same physiological structure and both have double coats: an undercoat and a top coat. The only difference between the two is the top coat. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. The double coat weathers and insulates the dogs—it protects them from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. The length of the coat of a German Shepherd has no impact on its ability as a working dog. What does a long haired German Shepherd look like? The skeleton and structure of a long-haired German Shepherd will be the same as a short-haired German Shepherd. Both dogs will have an undercoat, but the difference is that the top coat of a long-haired German Shepherd will be longer. The long coat GSD has longer and silkier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies? Have you ever heard the term before - Plush coated German Shepherd? In case you have no idea exactly what this means I'll do my best here to turn a rather ambiguous term into an easier to understand concept. As we've discussed before in this site German Shepherd Dogs basically come in 3 coat lengths which are:Standard, Plush and Coated. So what does that mean? How can you know what coat your GSD is wearing? All righty then.So first let's talk about the standard coat. This is the coat most German Shepherds are dressed in. These German Shepherds usually have less undercoat too. So, maybe this will help if you were to think of it this way - standard coated German Shepherds wear their fur closely to their bodies - kind of like a military soldier who wears their hair cut close to their skull. Coated German Shepherds are also called long coated German Shepherds. As their description suggests these GSDs have a much longer coat with longer fur around their ears, behind the backs of their legs and on their chest and tail. These long feathers aka: feathering are very beautiful and make the dogs look almost "collie-like" somewhat - speaking of coat only. Well, when speaking of coat basically they're kind of in-between the standard coated GSDs and the Coated German Shepherds - but they are closer overall to the standard coat dogs. Plush coated GSDs do not have feathering of any type. The plush coat German Shepherds have a much longer length of hair compared to the standard coated dogs and a much fuller undercoat too. Their fur is thicker, fuller and just longer overall than a standard coated GSD - and it is very obvious to the the touch and to the eye as well. But to make it even easier I'll illustrate with a few pictures here to make the point a bit easier to understand. So, I hope these descriptions and pictures will help you to better understand the difference between standard, coated and plush coated German Shepherds. Return from plush coat German Shepherds to German Shepherd coat patterns "Life is life - whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man's own advantage.

A friendly dog by nature, it strives for human attention and likes to remain close to its family members. It is patient with children and does well with other pets too. However, its athletic and exuberant disposition calls for careful observation when around younger children, otherwise they could be knocked over and get hurt. This sociable and pack-oriented pet is always happy to help its owner in family activities. Like its Weimaraner parent, it suffers from separation anxiety when left alone for hours. Although it does not bark at everything, it will certainly alert its owner about the presence of an intruder. This makes it suitable for watching and guarding activities. Care Exercise Being highly energetic and lively, labmaraners need plenty of daily activities to burn off their energy. Thus, homes with enough room to play and run are suitable for raising these dogs. They should be taken out for walks every day, which does not mean strolling around the neighborhood will satisfy their exercise requirements. To be fit, they need vigorous activities like hiking, running, and playing. Since these obedient dogs like to stay close to their owners, they do not always have to be taken out on leashes. Grooming The short and smooth-haired labmaraner does not require extensive maintenance. Combing once in every alternate week keeps its coat glossy. While bathing your pet with mild soap is recommended only when needed, occasional dry shampooing prevents the accumulation of dirt. Health Problems Like most crossbreeds , it is also prone to hereditary health issues. It may inherit some health conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, entropion, obesity, and bloating from its parent breeds. Also, check for some general dog health concerns including diarrhea, worms, fleas, and ear infections. Training Even though training them is easy, their occasional stubbornness is something that inexperienced owners might find difficult to manage. Employ a firm and assertive training method, but do not be harsh in your approach. Make the puppies familiar to their cage or crate so that they accept it as their safe dwelling place. Start socialization and obedience training early to prevent them from becoming over-dependent. This will also restrain some of their destructive behaviors like chewing small household items and digging holes in the yards. Feeding Your labmaraner dog needs a nutritious diet rich in proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to support its high activity levels. Instead of providing one or two heavy meals, you should divide it through the day. Interesting Facts These are multitalented dogs and could be used for retrieving, jogging, agility, and performing tricks. They are good swimmers and do not shy away from the water. The breed was a great success. Labrador retrievers are considered among the most intelligent and trainable dog breeds. This is why they are often used as working dogs. Labs are also naturally playful and affectionate. They love their people, and they are friendly with strangers and other animals. This makes them great family pets but terrible guard dogs. This is why they are usually rated among the top three dog breeds in most countries. The main complaint that people have about a Lab is that it has a high-shedding coat , which can be difficult to manage. Yes, we have Labs at home and I assume we eat our fair share of dog fur throughout the year, especially during the high shedding seasons. Meanwhile, Weimaraners are large dogs that were bred in Germany for hunting in the early 19th century. They are large enough to use when hunting animals such as boars, bears, and deer and were favored by royalty when hunting was still a popular aristocratic pastime. The history of the Weimaraner Lab mix is less well known, but it most likely originated in the s when many of the Lab mixes emerged. While breeders agree the mix results in an excellent dog, Weimaraner Labs are still relatively rare due to their large size and high-shedding coats unlike many other Lab mixes. Weimaraner Labrador Retriever Mix Appearance Both parent breeds are medium-to-large dogs, so you can expect the same from their mixed offspring. Weimaraners are fairly large dogs typically measuring 22 to 28 inches in height. They have athletic bodies, so they typically only weigh between 55 and 88 pounds. Labs are a bit smaller, measuring 21 to 22 inches, but they can weigh between 55 and 80 pounds with their sturdier frame. A Weimador will usually measure between 21 and 24 inches and can weigh anywhere from 60 to pounds depending on whether they get the athletic figure of the Weimaraner or the stockier build of the Lab. They usually have the barrel-chested appearance of the Weimaraner but with a bit more heavy muscle on their frame. Labs have high-shedding double coats that are quite long and can be black, chocolate, or yellow. They will have light amber, gray, or blue gray eyes. Their skin under their coat is a pinkish color rather than white or black. While their coat can be short or long and is a single layer, they still tend to shed quite a bit. They do shed, so they need to be brushed regularly to keep their coat under control. While their appearance can vary significantly, as is true with most mixed breeds, you can expect them to have a relatively long and square muzzle with long ears that flop down. Weimaraner Labrador Retriever Mix Temperament Labrador retrievers are among the most intelligent and naturally friendly dogs, which is why they are popular for mixed breeds. Weimaraners are intelligent, but not on the same level as a lab, so mixing them with a lab improves their intelligence and trainability. Weimaraners also have a very strong prey drive. The trainability that the Lab brings to the Weimador mix is important for teaching your dog what not to do and controlling their natural instincts. Weimaraner Labrador mixes need to be properly socialized from a young age to learn appropriate behavior. However, due to their large size, they should always be supervised when around smaller children. Labradors are very social animals that love being around their people all the time. Weimaraners take this to the next level! They are not independent and prefer to be glued to the side of their person. As a result, you can expect their mixed breed offspring might be a little needy. While their large size means they need outdoor space, they also need to be allowed inside the family home to be close to you. This unique mixed breed can develop fairly severe separation anxiety if they are left on their own for extended periods of time on a regular basis. You can expect whining, digging, and destructive behavior as a response. These dogs do best with families when there is usually someone around the house or when they can accompany someone to work. Weimaraner Labrador Retriever Mix Energy Levels Both Labrador retrievers and Weimaraners are high-energy dogs, so you can expect their mixed breed offspring to be a big ball of energy. They should have plenty of outdoor space available to blow off steam whenever needed. Just make sure your yard is well-fenced! Their prey drive can see them overcome some pretty impressive obstacles to catch smaller animals. A Weimaraner Lab mix needs at least an hour of exercise a day, preferably broken into two or three sessions. These should be active sessions that include running and games such as fetch and pull. They will enjoy accompanying the family on outdoor activities such as hikes and swims. Both their parent breeds love the water, and the Weimaraner even has webbed feet that it may pass on to its offspring. When they are at home, these dogs need quite a bit of mental stimulation. Interactive puzzles and toys that release treats are a good choice for them. A slow feeder is also a good investment as they tend to gobble down their food. This will stimulate them and improve their digestion. Weimaraner Labrador Retriever Mix Health Care Weimaraners are actually considered among the healthiest purebred dogs, and this is something their mixed breed offspring benefit from. They have a good lifespan of 10 to 12 years, which is about average for a dog of this size. Smaller dogs tend to live for longer. Unlike many large dog breeds, hip and elbow dysplasia rates are low in Weimaraners and their mixed offspring, too. It is still worth being careful about this due to the prevalence of the condition in Labs. One of the best things you can do is not over exercise them as a puppy, as this can exacerbate the problem. They should only have five minutes of exercise per month of life until they work up to an hour a day at the age of one. Eye conditions are a common problem for both parent breeds and can show up in their puppies. They probably will develop some kind of sight loss as they enter their senior years. Another problem for Weimanders is bloat or gastric torsion. This is when the stomach twists itself, pinching off blood vessels and blocking the route of food traveling in and out. If it is not treated quickly, it can lead to death fairly swiftly. Constipation and a swollen stomach are among the first symptoms. This can be avoided by feeding them smaller meals more often and avoiding rigorous exercise for an hour before eating, as well as for about an hour after eating. However, they do sometimes show up in shelters. Their neediness means they often prove to be too much for unprepared owners and therefore might find themselves in need of a new home. There are a few breed-specific rescues where you might be more likely to find these dogs. Labrador Weimaraner mixes have a friendly and playful personality and are full of energy. They are quite clingy and love to be around their people all the time. They will want to join you on hikes and in bed, and they can develop anxiety if left alone too much. Is a Weimaraner a good family dog? Weimaraners love their families and will thrive in an active family that has lots of time to spend with them! While they love children, it can be difficult to socialize them to live alongside smaller animals, such as cats, due to their high prey drive. Do Weimaraners like to cuddle? Yes, a Weimaraner will love to get up on the couch with you for a cuddle. They are also fans of standing hugs and will probably greet you with one every time you walk through the door. Weimaraner Lab mix dogs are friendly and playful dogs that are fun to be around, but they are also a pretty big commitment! Their size and energy levels mean you need a pretty big space for them and have to commit to regular exercise. They also need good training structure to keep their prey drive under control. These dogs can only be described as clingy, and they will want to be around you all the time. They will not cope well if left alone at home for hours at a time while everyone is out and about. They are ideal for someone who wants constant canine companionship. Labmaraners are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Labrador Retriever or Weimaraner parents. The most common Labmaraner colors are brown, yellow, black, and grey. In general, the Labmaraner is a pretty adaptable dog when it comes to climate. Just make sure to provide a dog coat if the weather gets too frosty, and seek out shade and fresh water during the hotter months. Labmaraner dogs and children are a great fit for each other. The mixed breed is friendly, gentle, and playful and will love to frolic with the kids. Just be sure to supervise play sessions. When it comes to walks and play sessions, aim for a minimum of an hour every day. The Labrador Retriever originates from Canada, where they were first bred for hunting and retrieving tasks before becoming renowned as guide dogs. These days, the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular dogs in the United States—a feat likely helped by their gentle and loving nature. The Weimaraner was also originally bred as a hunting dog, but in Germany. The breed is sometimes affectionately called the grey ghost due to their unique color! The Labmaraner has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. Labmaraner Size The Labmaraner is usually described as a large-sized dog. Although, as is always the case with newer mixed dog breeds, exact size standards might vary. Most weigh in at 60 to pounds and range in height from 21 to 24 inches. Female Labmaraners might be ever so slightly smaller than their male counterparts. They are smart dogs who also take well to training; although, some Labmaraners might prove a little stubborn at first. Persistent and proper training is key. A big family is a plus when considering a Labmaraner—not least because they crave attention and do best when around people. Kids, especially, are a great fit with the breed. Like most large dogs, the Labmaraner will require a lot of exercise. This is not a dog that will prosper being cooped up all day, and destructive behavior might even occur if they are left alone in an apartment. Labmaraner Health Labmaraners are generally considered to be healthy dogs—although the breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Labrador Retriever and Weimaraner face. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. It cannot be stressed enough that the Labmaraner needs a lot of exercise. Aim for 60 minutes of walk and play time every single day. If possible, bring the dog along on hikes and runs. As with any active dog, be sure to check their nails and paw pads for any signs of damage that might have been inflicted while outside. Ears will also need to be maintained and checked for infections or parasites—ask your vet about tell tale signs of a possible infection. Labmaraner Feeding An ideal Labmaraner diet should be formulated for a large breed with high energy. Baths should not need to be given too frequently—unless a particularly messy outdoor play session has taken place! The breed is friendly, gentle and playful and will love to frolic with the kids. The Labmaraner is usually tolerant of any resident household pets. Just be sure to monitor early interactions and set boundaries if need be, especially if the dog starts to show any of their hunting heritage traits. Ultimately, early socialization pays off. Make sure to reward your Labmaraner for good behavior and adhere to a proper training regimen when you bring them home to your family. Labmaraner Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Labmaraners because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Labrador Retriever or Weimaraner breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. Lifespan Sociability Labmaraners are extremely cute puppies, so you might find it hard to visit a litter without coming home with a puppy or two. This breed is extremely energetic and intelligent, so they need a great deal of exercise and mental stimulation. Digging up your backyard, starting up an endless volley of barking, or chewing the leg of your coffee table are just a few ways that these dogs might choose to entertain themselves! Before taking on the responsibility of a Labmaraner puppy who will grow up to be a large and powerful dog, make sure you can provide what they need. They come in a range of coat colors While the Weimaraner is famous for its grey coat, there are three colors accepted within the breed standard. These are blue, gray, and silver gray. Labradors also come in three accepted colors: chocolate, black, and yellow. Both breeds can have small white markings on the chest. They combine the best bits of both parent breeds As with many hybrid breeds, the Labmaraner combines some of the best aspects of both parent breeds. The Labrador is well-known for its loyalty, friendliness, and intelligence. The Weimaraner is prized for its bravery, energy, and bravery. One puppy in a litter might resemble their Labrador Retriever parent in temperament but look more like a Weimaraner, another puppy might be the exact opposite, while another is a perfect mixture of the two breeds. They have no trouble picking up new commands and will enjoy nothing more than a rewarding training session with their owners. Are These Dogs Good for Families? The Labmaraner can soak up as much exercise as you can throw at them, so if someone wants to take them on a run in the morning and another family is heading out to the lake and thinks that your dog might like a swimming session, the answer is always going to be yes! Keep the first few introductions short, and make sure each dog has a separate part of the house where they can retreat to if they want space. Regarding cats and other small pets, Labmaraners can be trained to accept these with a minimum of fuss. As a hunting breed, the Weimaraner does have a high prey drive, and your puppy may inherit this trait. Image: Gualberto Becerra, Shutterstock Things to Know When Owning a Labmaraner Becoming the proud owner of a Labmaraner is going to require a significant investment of time, energy, and money! So, before you make up your mind, here are a few more things to consider. While they might be an active breed, they certainly do love to eat! Whether you choose to feed your dog just wet food, wet food and kibble, just kibble, or a raw food diet will depend on both your preferences and those of your dog. Once fully fit, these active dogs will happily take as much exercise as you can give them. But if you wanted to go out for a day hike and take your pup, then they will easily cope with that and still have energy at the end of the day. They need to run to work off steam, so make sure they can indulge in plenty of opportunities to stretch their legs. Dock diving, games of fetch, fly ball and agility are all excellent activities that a Labmaraner will love. If your dog has excellent recall and a relatively low prey drive, then you should be okay to let them off-leash when out and about. The best method with this smart breed is to combine both physical and mental activities every day. Having an intelligent dog can be a wonderful thing, but it can also be frustrating when they teach themselves a new trick, like opening a door that was meant to stay shut or realizing that they can jump on a chair to investigate leftovers on the table. Consistent training methods are best with this breed, so finding yourself a puppy trainer who can help you implement a training program is a great idea. Luckily, they also love food, so positive reinforcement using plenty of treats usually turns even the most stubborn Labmaraner into a willing student. Sometimes this will shed frequently, like a Labrador, and other times, it will be much lower shedding and similar to a Weimaraner. Labmaraners can have quick-growing nails that can become uncomfortable if allowed to grow too long. Minor Conditions. Weimaraner Lab mix puppies Due to their high energy and potentially anxious nature, this is not a breed that will do well with an owner who works full time and is not at home much. They also like a lot of space, so apartment-dwellers might think twice about this breed. That said, Weimaraner Lab mix dogs make fantastic family pets. They are great with kids and adults alike and a social breed happy in multi-dog households. The breed slowly made its way to the Americas, but their popularity exploded after many Weimaraner pups were brought back from Germany after the end of World War II. The Labrador breed are descended from the St. Labradors were favored by wealthy aristocrats in their early days, before becoming one of the most popular breeds in the modern age. Weimaraner Lab Characteristics The Weimaraner Labrador mix will take on the characteristics of its parent breeds — but as with any mix, the results may vary. Looking at the Weimaraner, the height span is inches, with weight between 55 and 90 lbs. The Labrador is a bit smaller, with a height of .You could assume that a Weimaraner Black Lab mix would fall in a similar weight and height class based on these figures. However, in reality they could be at the Lab minimum or Weimaraner maximum. As for appearance, the Labmaraner is a beautiful dog. It has long legs, a glossy coat, and a strong, muscular frame. The Lab Weimaraner mix tends to have a short, single-layered coat. Longer coats are possible, but are rare. Grooming Since Weimaraner and Lab mix dogs have relatively short coats, their grooming requirements are fairly light. Brushing once a week or so should be sufficient. However, Labradors are prolific shedders, and can molt a great deal. Although Weimaraners shed less, their mix could go either way. So be prepared for either eventuality. Weimaraner Lab Mix Temperament Labrador Weimaraner mixes are very active dogs that tend to have a lot of energy. Since both parent breeds are fairly high-energy, you can count on your Labmaraner having an active personality. These dogs tend to be very loyal and loving, as you would expect from the origin breeds. They are great with kids, and generally make excellent family pets. Their friendly temperament means that although they are likely to bark to alert their owners of an intruder — before running over to get their belly rubbed by said intruder. Labs are also often friendly to the point of being quite pushy, a characteristic that you are less likely to see in a Weimaraner. Weimaraner and Labrador Health Any mixed breed dog will be susceptible to inheriting the health issues of the parent breeds. On the Weimaraner side, potential health problems include hypertrophic osteodystrophy a bone disease , spinal dysraphism a spinal deformity that can lead to neurological abnormalities , hyperuricosuria a condition that can lead to bladder and kidney stones , and hypomyelination a condition that can lead to tremors in puppies. For Labradors, health problems typically include eye problems, joint problems, obesity, and cancer. While generally healthy pups, one of the most common issues with Labs include hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Labradors may also be prone to obesity and related concerns, including diabetes and arthritis. These factors can typically be controlled by proper feeding habits and regular exercise. The Weimaraner parent should also have good hip scores and have had their eyes checked by a vet. Your pup might be prone to the health issues of either parent, and it may take on more or less of the characteristics of either parent. Socialization and Training Lab Weimaraner mixes are typically happy, social dogs, but they need to be socialized early for best results. The ideal socialization window for young dogs is typically between 8 and 16 weeks of age. This is the period where your pup will be most open to new experiences. And less fearful of larger dogs and unfamiliar humans. Keep in mind that socialization needs to happen with other dogs, and with other people. As for training, Labradors are generally eager to please. They respond very well to positive reinforcement training with treats. Weimaraners are a bit more strong-willed than labradors, which can make training a bit more difficult. Lab Weimaraners should be trained early and often for best results. As they are both sporting dog breeds with the potential for prey drive, recall training from a young age is essential. And thus, the Weimaraner Lab cross is actually rather uncommon. Finding one in a rescue situation will be quite difficult. When choosing a breeder, make sure to do your research. You want to identify a reputable breeder that is knowledgeable and kind to their pups. Ask if the breeder conducted any health testing on the parents, as the results of those tests could sway your decision. Cream, silver, yellow, black, chocolate Suitable for: Active lifestyles, homes with land Temperament: Energetic, loyal, intense, action-oriented So, what exactly happens when you cross these two structurally similar dogs? You get an agile, lean muscular dog that is capable of taking on the world at large. Labmaraner dogs are energetic and loyal animals. Find the right food for your dog, and give them tons of love to keep them happy and healthy. They have fun-loving personalities and make terrific playmates. The Weimaraner is an incredibly intense dog that loves nothing more than a job to do. When you cross the Labrador Retriever and the Weimaraner, you get a very high-energy breed that needs lots of space to run. Their mental and physical stimulation is equally important, as this dog is fiercely intelligent and very active. This breed would fare best in situations with lots of room to run and explore. If you have a lot of acreage or a huge fenced-in area, they can work quite well in your living situation. This breed is a bit hyper, taking a very long time to mature. Because of their overabundance of energy, they work best with people who have a highly active lifestyle. These dogs can be highly affectionate with their owners and family members. But primarily, they are bred for work. However, a well-trained cross can be incredibly devoted, loyal, and faithful to their humans. These dogs do not do well with apartment living. So, if you and your family live somewhere that makes it complicated for outdoor activities, you might want to think about getting another breed. Because of their exuberant energy, these dogs work best for children ages 6 and older. Also, the Weimaraner is known for exhibiting a bit of aggression at times. They have too much intensity for younger children and might knock down or hurt a younger child. Even though a Lab is a super exciting, fun breed, the Weimaraner DNA might throw a wrench in the mix when it comes to being a family pet. However, because of the possibility of same-sex or territorial aggression, you should socialize them as early as possible. They have high chasing instincts. There is some speculation that the silver Labrador is in reality a Weimaraner Lab mix. Weimaraners come in three colors — blue, gray, and silver gray. Labs come in three colors — black , chocolate , and yellow. But, there is a rare color variation of Labradors called silver. Silver Labs are, in essence, chocolate Labs with a diluted color gene. The Weimaranar Lab mix has a short, flat coat and floppy ears. Their muzzle is fairly long and slim, and they are pretty leggy too. Labradors tend to be between .They can weigh from lbs. Weimaraners are just a bit taller and heavier. They can be as tall as 27 inches as an adult; females can be as small as 23 inches. Female Weimaraners weigh between lbs, while males weigh between lbs. A Working Background Labrador Retriever ancestors originally come from Newfoundland, where small water dogs pulled in nets and traps full of fish for their owners. Weimaraners they were bred as big-game dogs, but shifting hunting priorities turned the breed into a sought-after bird dog. Although used for slightly different sporting roles, these dogs were both bred to be involved in retrieving game. To do that they needed to be intelligent, strongly bonded to their handlers and able to work cooperatively with them. Weimaraner Labrador Mix Temperament Temperament in mixed breeds is just like appearance — impossible to predict! But looking at the parent breeds can give us a better idea. Both types of dog bark when necessary, so expect an occasional barker. Also, both breeds are active and need exercise to get their energy out. They are easily trained, but must have some stimulation. Weimaraner Lab mix puppies could be high-spirited, like a Lab, or a great runner with plenty of stamina, like a Weimaraner. Most likely, a mix will be friendly and sweet. Still, you should remember that your Weimaraner and Labrador mix can show traits of either parent. Training and Exercise A Lab Weim mix will respond best to positive reinforcement. Harsh, punishment-based methods can cause distrust and stubbornness when training. Training will offer much-needed mental stimulation, but also a little exercise. They are active, energetic dogs who need to run. Whether this is an energetic game of fetch, swimming, or hiking with you. They will be great candidates for dog sports like agility and rally. Destructive behaviors will be reduced by staying fit and busy. Just be wary of over-exercising when they are young, as this can have a negative impact on the health of their joints when they are older. Labs are generally a healthy breed. But they are genetically prone to obesity, vision problems, and certain types of cancers. They are also prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which are developmental abnormalities in the joints. Large-breed dogs often suffer from these. Weimaraners, too, are a generally healthy breed. But they are also genetically prone to certain conditions, hip and elbow dysplasia, cataracts, dermoids, corneal dystrophy, and distichiasis entropion. If you are buying a puppy from a breeder, ask to see both parents good hip scores and clear eye tests. When you visit a breeder, take note of the conditions of the dogs. What About Rescue? They are usually cheaper than puppies, and are past the awkward first training stages. So, it could take you a while to find a Weimaraner Lab mix suitable for your home. Make sure to ask plenty of questions to find a rescue dog that will suit your home perfectly. If you can, find out why they were taken to the shelter. Also ask questions about their temperament, including how well socialized they are different types of people, animals, and things.

Colors not allowed by the AKC are because dogs bred in those colors carry genetic defects and traits harmful to our breed. Breed standard requires only a trace of brindle therefore just a few hairs will qualify a dog that appears primarily black to be called brindle. It is called Brindle on the pedigree. A marking of Black Mask should also be added for future pedigree references. Above is a black mask tiger brindle with white Left next to a puppy without much brindling. Black Mask Brindle is called a Reverse Brindle when there is more fawn than black. White and Fawn pie-bald White and Brindle pie-bald White and Brindle or White and Fawn as the Breed standard designates are also called by it's pattern name "pie-bald" or "pieds" which refers to a dog that is mostly white with markings and spots of another color. Piedbalds can also have the black mask marking like the red fawn pied. Many light fawn French Bulldogs are mistaken for a cream. A true cream Frenchie will look slightly off white throughout — solid color. Its a recessive dilute from the fawn coat. They have no markings on them, they have black pigment, black noses, black eye rims, black paw pads, and black lips. The fawn French Bulldog colors come in different shades, from very light, almost cream looking ones, to a deep red fawn. They can have a mask, like the one pictured above, or be maskless. They were rare because reputable breeders won't produce them because they will not better the breed. Now they are every where because unscrupulous breeders just want to make a lot of money breeding unhealthy colors and traits detrimental to the breed. These colors are disqualified in the breed standard. Close Privacy Overview This website uses cookies to improve your experience while you navigate through the website. The distinctive reddish-brown coat color of Red Fawn French Bulldogs is the result of a combination of fawn and red genes, which gives Red Fawn Frenchies a truly unique look. Red Fawn French Bulldogs are essentially the same as Red Frenchies with a reddish shade of fawn color, but their coat has a sort of ashy shine. These puppies usually have black markings around their muzzle called a mask as well as their eyes and ears , and they also tend to have a white patch on their chest. While the classic Fawn French Bulldog has a solid, light tan coat, Red Fawn French Bulldogs have a reddish-brown coat color that varies in shade from light cinnamon to darker mahogany. Some Red Fawn Frenchies may have a more prominent reddish hue, while others may have a lighter fawn coloration. Similar to all canine breeds, Red Fawn French Bulldogs go through a growth process as they develop from puppies to full-grown adults. As puppies, they are petite and fragile, weighing only a few pounds and measuring a few inches in height. To ensure their physical and emotional health, it is important to provide them with appropriate nourishment, socialization, and veterinary care. Red Fawn French Bulldogs are considered a small dog breed, with an average weight of 16 to 28 pounds and a height of 11 to 12 inches at the shoulder. They possess a strong physique and flat face, which requires special attention from the owner. Red Fawn French Bulldogs are known for their friendly and outgoing personalities. Red Fawn French Bulldogs are loyal, playful, and affectionate companions that love to be near their owners, often following them around and seeking attention. They are highly intelligent and adaptable, making them easy to train and ideal for families with children and other pets. While they are generally not hostile or confrontational, Red Fawn French Bulldogs may bark or become protective of their owners in certain circumstances. They are not considered high-energy dogs but do enjoy outdoor activities and exercise. It is critical to provide them with appropriate care and attention, including regular checkups with a veterinarian and exercise, to ensure their well-being and happiness throughout their lives. Fawn pied Frenchies are basic white and contain various numbers and patterns of fawn patches which patches can be varying shades of fawn, even varying on the same Frenchie. Some pieds have only a few patches while others have several. Some of the patches are small silver dollar size making these Frenchies mostly white while others have large patches which meld into other patches making these Frenchies more fawn than white.
