At first she barged out of every door, broke every collar, leash, chain, tie-out cable we bought! She was horrified of so many things. She had separation anxiety really bad, so bad she made herself bleed to get out. After a very long and bumpy road we finally accomplished what I dreamed: "the perfect dog. She is so well-behaved and excellent mannered. She even stops on a dime if I tell her to. She is my everything! I have taught her a lot, but not as much as she has taught me. She taught me patience, understanding, love, devotion, and so much more. She has won the hearts of everyone she has met AND has even made a dog lover out of the people who were "scared" of dogs or "hated" dogs. I take her everywhere with me. She loves her bath time, especially playing "torro" with the towel during drying time! She hugs me, and she gives me the gentlest kisses. She has no aggression toward anything or anyone, she loves everything! This dog is my entire world. She always rests her head on my lap and gives me those soulful puppy dog eyes. Unlike any other dogs I've ever had she and I communicate mentally or something. She and I just know what each other want. Before I got her she had never been out other than a quick potty break on a 4-foot lead. She also had been through a lot of owners. She's great inside now, though! With all that work she's perfect inside! I can leave a whole plate of food on the floor for hours while I'm not in the room and she won't touch it. No accidents, never chewed on anything, very quiet. She's my angel. Her favorite activity would be eating. She's loves food. This is a dog who has taught me to be strong, all good things are worth fighting for, never give up, and you never get the dog you want, always the dog you need. My love for Baby Girl made me fall in love with Boxers period, which led me into rescuing another Boxer, so I guess in a way she's saved two lives. Just like me. She's been through a lot, and has come very far. Most important thing she didn't give up on me, either. You can see several examples of our amazing Merle Bernedoodles below. Where does the merle gene come from and how it got in the poodle gene pool? I get this question all the time. I have done a lot of study of the merle gene in the poodle gene pool and believe that it was not caused by introducing another breed into the gene pool but, in fact, it is a mutation that occurred naturally. Merle is probably the most mis-understood and hotly debated dilution gene in the poodle. Many believe it must be a recessive gene because it doesn't affect the appearance of red, apricot and red or diluted colors such as blues and silvers. In addition, it can be hard to see or not evident at all on black and brown dogs cryptic. Not only is its appearance illusive to breeders but it has confused scientists and it is still not completely understood. The merle pattern has been studied many times and the last study released in emphatically stated that merle was caused by a mutation in the gene called SILV or PMEL.The research was believed to be so solid that tests were offered to breeders to identify Merle in their dogs. However, as of March the company who owned the patent for the test, Idexx, stopped offering tests as they discovered the scientists identified the wrong gene. SILV is not responsible for merle. The gene they decided was merle SILV actually turned out to be for a form of piebaldism- not merle. One theory is that piebaldism may be issue when connected to merle- or it may be piebaldism itself that is the issue. Another theory is "The Misidentification Theory. However, it is said - rightly so - that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. Then there is the "The Cryptic Merle" theory. This theory is actually a subcategory of the Misidentification Theory. Merle is what is called a "modifier. If merle acts on a black coat, the result is blue merle. If it acts on a chocolate coat, the result is red merle. And so on. The final theory I have is that that merles have been in the breed and that mere is a "natural" occuring pattern in the breed, and that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. When I called AKC to register Chuck and asked about the color code to give him they said to give him code and This refers to a a red and white dog with black markings. This leads me to believe that when looking at the color pedigree 5 or 10 generations back you would not know if the dog was actually a merle or a parti meaning merle could be in the pedigree without proper identification. Merle can affect all coat colors. The merle forms of brown and black are usually called "red" though this is not correct; red and merle are genetically different and "blue" as patches of blue are formed throughout the coat. Merle is a dilution gene just like the blue, chocolate in a traditional color but without the color of blue DNA. Merle has its own colours and DNA; a blue merle is a dog who has blue patches on its body, red and some are chocolate or "cookies and cream". Dogs who are recessive red can still be affected by merle, but the patches are either hardly seen or, if the dog is a clear recessive red, are not visible at all. Combinations such as brindle merle exist, but are rare. In addition to altering base coat color, merle also modifies eye color and coloring on the nose and paw pads. The merle gene modifies the dark pigment in the eyes, occasionally changing dark eyes to blue, or part of the eye to be colored blue. Since merle causes random modifications, however, both dark-eyed, blue-eyed, and odd-colored eyes are possible. Color on paw pads and nose may be mottled pink and black. What are the most common Merle patterns in Bernedoodles? How is a Merle Bernedoodle produced? Merle is a term used to describe the pattern of a dogs coat. Merle is a dilution gene, that is, it lightens whatever the coat color would otherwise have been. The lightening is not spread evenly over the coat, but leaves patches of undiluted color scattered over the dog's body. Also, the lightening seems to work primarily on the black pigment in the coat. Merle refers to the pattern in the coat and is not a color as such. The white and gray patterns that appear on a black make them appear to have a blueish cast. These are called blue merles. Merle is a color combination in dogs' coats. Although most breeds that can have merle coats also typically have white markings such as around the neck, under the belly, and so on , and often tan points typically between the white and the darker parts of the coat , these are separate colors from the merle; some dogs do appear completely merled with no white or tan markings. Merle can also alter other colors and patterns besides the usual red or black. Utah Bernedoodles. Te most common Merle patterns found in Bernedoodles are: Merle Phantom, a pattern with merle markings on the body and white noses, legs, and chest. Tri-color Merle, a combination of black, rust, and white coloring and merle markings. Many Merle Bernedoodles are also born with light blue or partially blue eyes, or their eyes may be two different colors wall-eyed. The nose and paws may also display the merle pattern. The merle gene is found exclusively in domesticated dogs, and it does naturally appear in some breeds. This is because Double Merles lack hair pigments produced in the inner ear and are extremely prone to congenital eye defects. While Double Merles may appear to be albinos , they are not. They simply lack normal levels of pigment due to dangerous breeding issues. As a result of this lack of pigment, Double Merles are also more prone to getting skin cancer. A Phantom, Ghost, or Cryptic Merle displays very little to no merle pattern and may be misclassified as non-merles The only way to see if your dog is a phantom merle is to do a DNA test. Phantom merles when bred to non-merles do not produce any other than cryptics and solids. They will not produce a typical merle dog. If you are a breeder, it is important to test to see if your dog is a phantom merle to make sure that two merles are not bred together , which could result in a double merle dog. The Berndoodle is not officially recognized by the AKC. Merle dogs have the same life expectancy and can have the same excellent quality of life as solid ones. Dog Genetics reports that some merle dogs may experience increased sensitivity to light and increased risk of skin cancer. Bernedoodles as a breed are also more prone to hip dysplasia and eye issues than some other breeds. According to the AKC , hip dysplasia typically occurs in large breed dogs and happens when the ball and joint of the hip deteriorate over time. Eye issues may include sensitivity to light, partial blindness, or complete blindness. Some Merle Bernedoodles are born with eyes that are too small for their skulls, a condition called microphthalmia. In these cases, the eyes will usually need to be removed. Standard Poodles are also playful and fearless. Standard Poodles are hypoallergenic, which means Merle Bernedoodles are, too. Merle Bernedoodles typically have a pleasant and gentle temperament, and they are very curious and friendly. Overall, Merle Bernedoodles are adaptable and easy to train, so they make great pets for first-time pet owners. Merle Bernedoodles are great with kids, families, and generally all people. Merle Bernedoodles can be quite sensitive, and they truly want to please their owners. The merle pattern is a bit more rare and desirable than others, so Merle Bernedoodles will likely cost more than ones with normal patterns. Finding a reputable Merle Bernedoodle breeder involves doing a lot of research. You may also want to tap your network and see if any of your friends or associates have worked with a reputable breeder in your area in the past. Over time, the breeding of the largest dogs from each litter allowed for the standard-sized reds that we see today. As a result, standard-sized reds are now much easier to breed. Now, as a result, we have red poodles in every poodle size. Some of the earliest of the reds were known to be a bit more feisty and aggressive than those reds we have today. This is in part due to the breeding of standard with a miniature and also due to some breeders only focusing on breeding for color only. There was also a certain amount of inbreeding that occurred among some breeders. These temperament challenges are largely a thing of the past and reputable breeders produce calm loving reds. As you can see, one of the biggest challenges in developing the red color was to also take into consideration other qualities that make a well-bred poodle. These qualities include health, temperament, beauty, and conformation. Do Red Poodles Change in Color? Usually, when red puppies are born, they have a deep, rich red color. Typically, when they are about 6 weeks old their coat will begin to fade a little bit. About 4 Weeks later a sharp red line will be visible next to the skin if you part their hair. This is where the new coat will come in. It can be quite exciting for new red puppy owners to see. One of the interesting things about red poodles is that their coats can, and will, go through many changes over the course of their life. It is not uncommon or their coats to go from lighter to darker, to lighter and back to a darker shade. Every red poodle has its own unique color of red. But wow when you do find one I must say they are some of the cutest, most adorable, tiny red poodles you have ever seen. Now to be clear, red teacup poodles are technically toy poodles but much smaller in size. They can also sometimes be prone to health issues and can require extra care and attention. You must take great care in finding a reputable breeder to ensure that your pup will be healthy and resilient. Does the weather affect coat color? But it really just depends on your poodle. Generally, the sun has a more profound impact on light and white-colored poodles. Typically, you will find that their coat maybe becomes a little brighter or lighter than normal. If it does happen to bother you, not to worry. You can simply let it grow out a little bit and then trim off lighter bits. For those red poodles that have a deep, rich red colored coach they will be largely unaffected by sunlight. Does age affect coat color? There are situations where a poodle can also become darker over time as well but it is less common. Red poodles can be fickle in that way. Is there a strong odor of urine or feces present? Are there other pets on the property? What kind of condition are they? Do they appear to be well cared for, clean and or groomed? A truly dedicated breeder will have a system in place for breeding dogs and will often be greatly involved in showing dogs. They will have good records and documents on previous litters, health certificates, and vaccinations, etc. If you do your homework, you would have found a skilled experienced breeder and not a backyard quick money operation.
