In just a few generations, the German Shepherd was one of the most populous in the world. Honrand fathered many puppies. Nearly all German Shepherds today are descended from him. There was quite a bit of inbreeding that occurred to produce the German Shepherd breed we know today. The Black German Shepherd has likely existed to some extent since the breed was produced. However, many dogs do not carry the completely black gene. Many completely black German Shepherds in the past were likely culled at birth due to the defect. Today, the gene is seeing a reoccurrence. Personality and Temperament The German Shepherd is often considered to be an aggressive dog. However, this is not completely true. They do have significant protective instincts, as they were originally bred to guard flocks of sheep. For instance, the German Shepherd has a bite force of over 1, newtons. But there are several dogs that rank around this as well, including the Rottweiler, Pit Bull, and Labrador Retriever. Most dogs at about this size are going to have a similar bite strength. German Shepherds are considered to be moderately active. They need just about as much exercise as dogs of a similar size. This breed is well-known for being heavily devoted to their people and easy to train. When trained properly, they will absolutely listen. However, they do have innate protective instincts. If you want to dog that is going to be protective of their family, this is a great choice. These canines do need extensive socialization starting at a young age, though. Otherwise, they can become a bit too protective of their family and territory. These canines are not the friendliest. They are people-oriented, but not with strangers. They tend to be quite unsure with strangers. At best, they usually ignore them completely. Other times, they may be obviously uncomfortable. German Shepherds have high prey drive. On the one hand that means that you can easily motivate them with a ball or tug toy. On the other hand, it requires a lot of supervision for owners that have small dogs or cats in addition to their shepherd. While your dog might not outright try to fight with a cat or smaller dog, he could even accidentally hurt them during play. They are extremely intelligent and devoted to their owners. Unlike some dog breeds, they will listen to their owners in most real-life situations. They can learn a variety of different commands very easily and will actually do them when asked. However, these dogs do need the training. Without it, they can be overly protective and even potentially dangerous. Their ease of training does make fulfilling this need quite easy, though. We do recommend puppy classes starting at a very young age. These classes provide the extra socialization that your dog needs, as well as allows you to jumpstart their training. We only recommend private classes for dogs that are too reactive around strangers and other dogs to thrive in a group class. Usually, only German Shepherds who were not properly socialized as puppies will fit into this category. If you adopt an older German Shepherd that seems in need of socialization, we recommend taking private classes with an experienced trainer. You can work your dog through some basic commands and then work on socializing them with safe people and dogs. The trainer should be able to help you in this regard. The German Shepherd is a more active breed, and completely black German Shepherds are not different. While there are more active dog breeds out there, these canines are best for those that are quite active. They need at least two medium-to-long walks per day. Puppies will likely need some extra play sessions as well. Health and Care German Shepherds are pretty healthy as far as purebred dogs come. However, they are prone to some health problems. Many of these are due to the inbreeding that occurred early in the breed, which made some previously rare traits more common. Black German Shepherds are not known to have any more health problems than their black-and-tan cousins. Their coat coloration is not associated with any particular health issues or anything of that sort. It is important to purchase these dogs from a qualified breeder, as they tend to perform plenty of health testing on any dog they plan on breeding. This helps them recognize health problems and pick only the healthiest dogs possible for producing litters. We do recommend purchasing a German Shepherd that was bred as a working dog — not one produced as a show dog. These two lines of dogs are somewhat distinct as they have been bred for two very different purposes. Show dogs tend to confirm to an extreme extent to the breed standard, which increase the amount of health problems they develop. On the other hand, working dogs were bred with practicality in mind. Many German Shepherds have hip and elbow dysplasia. This disease occurs when the ball and socket of the joint do not line up correctly, leading to excess wear-and-tear. Eventually, this cause arthritis-like symptoms, but at a much earlier age than arthritis typically shows up. Usually, this damage occurs during puppyhood when the dog is growing, but they may not show symptoms until a few years later. There are a few things pet owners can do to reduce the chance of hip and elbow dysplasia in their German Shepherd. Many of these dogs are also affected by degenerative spinal stenosis. However, this study had a notably small sample size, so it may not be entirely accurate. On a good note, German Shepherds are actually less likely to get ear infections than other dogs. Degenerative myelopathy occurs often enough in German Shepherds that they are likely predispositioned to it. This test is very expensive, so many breeders perform it on their dogs before breeding as well as on the puppies after they are born. Once the test is used regularly, it becomes very easy to remove it from the breed. Von Willebrand disease also occurs at a higher level in German Shepherds than in the normal dog population. It is likely that they are genetically predispositioned to it. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs in German Shepherds as well. This condition is usually treated with medication and pancreatic supplements. It is most likely genetic, so health testing and keeping track of pedigrees is important to eliminating it in the breed. Medium-coated dogs will only need brush two to three times a week. Long coats will need combed through at least once a day to prevent mats. Because of their double coat, dogs of all coat types will shed profusely. Do not adopt a black German Shepherd unless you can deal with a lot of extra hair. Even if you brush your dog daily, they will still shed everywhere. Usually, this occurs in the spring and fall, but it can depend on your local climate. Shedding is also tied to hormones — not just the weather. There is little you can do to reduce the overall amount of shedding your dog does. However, anti-shedding shampoos and a high-quality diet can help. It is usually not too difficult to find a normal German Shepherd breeder somewhere near you. However, not all breeders produce black dogs. Most will also be significantly more expensive than a black-and-tan German Shepherd due to their rarity. Many people want a black German Shepherd, which means that you often have to be prepared to pay a bit extra. However, this is still much cheaper than you might expect for a large dog. As a common breed, they are usually cheaper than most. It may be tempting to cut corners and purchase a cheaper puppy. However, this is not recommended, especially when it comes to German Shepherds. These puppies need socialized from the moment they are born. Often, breeders put in this time and effort. We highly recommend only purchasing puppies form very experienced breeders. Otherwise, you may end up with an unsocialized puppy and a troublesome temperament. You should always ask about the pedigree of the parents, as well as the health testing the breeder has done. Ask to see the parents if at all possible. Sometimes, the father will be located somewhere else, so only the mother will be at the breeder. In this case, it is usually fine to just see the mother. You can tell a lot about a breeder form how they keep the mother and the puppies, so be absolutely sure to ask to see their living conditions. The parents should be AKC registered, so you should ask for registration. But AKC registration does not mean that the dog is high-quality. Every German Shepherd can be registered — even those with no health testing. Preferably, you should have owned at least one dog before. It is recommended that you have some experience with more active dogs, as well. These dogs are quite active and tend to be high-energy. Without the appropriate amount of exercise, they can easily become destructive. In fact, most of the destructive behavior associated with a German Shepherd is due to a lack of stimulation. German Shepherds require extensive training as well, so it is best if they have a handler that has previously trained dogs. They will take up a few hours a day as puppies and require as much as an hour or two of exercise alone. Many of these canines are more expensive than their black-and-tan counterparts. However, they have won the hearts of many pet owners. It will often take you a little bit before you locate a completely black puppy, so be prepared to sit on a few waiting lists. Despite their unusual colorations, these dogs are very similar to all other German Shepherds. They have the same temperament and work great as guard dogs. You have to prepare to train and socialize them properly. They require quite a bit more work than other breeds, but it is absolutely worth it in the end. We recommend these dogs for serious dog owners who have previously owned dogs. German Shepherds are not for the casual dog owner. We recommend good-quality dry kibble with high protein content, with a meat listed as the first two or three ingredients. How much to feed them will naturally depend on their size, but in general, two to three cups of kibble per day is fine. This should ideally be split into two or three separate meals. We advise against free feeding these pooches, as they can be prone to becoming overweight. As with any dog, make sure they have access to fresh, clean water at all times. They are highly intelligent pooches and will benefit from mental and physical exercise. A brisk walk, jog, or run session followed by games of fetch or agility training is a great way to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. At a bare minimum, an hour a day of exercise is required, but the more, the better. If possible, we recommend two sessions of exercise and interaction per day. This will keep your Shar-Poo happy and healthy, keep them from misbehaving and developing bad habits, and above all, help strengthen the bond between you and your pooch. Positive reinforcement training is the way to go, as these dogs do not respond well to harsh training methods, and this may, in fact, make the process take far longer. Early socialization and beginning training from a young age are vital. Getting your pooch used to being around other dogs and people at an early age is a massive advantage, as they will be less likely to be distressed or distracted during outings and more likely to follow commands. Training should begin on the day that you bring your puppy home. If your Shar-Poo has a longer, thicker coat, you may need to brush them more often, at least every other day, to prevent knots and matting. Make sure they are kept dry and clean to avoid any infection or fungal growth. Most dogs will need regular nail clipping , and we recommend beginning this process from puppyhood. This will get them used to the process and make clipping far easier in the future. Poodles can also suffer from bloat and allergies at times and are prone to obesity if freely fed. Shar Peis can also inherit hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as patellar luxation, autoimmune thyroiditis, and various eye problems, such as entropion, retinal dysplasia, glaucoma, and cataracts. Their loose, folded skin is also highly prone to infection if not kept clean. Minor Conditions. This was bred to create a dog with a low-shedding coat and a winning character. This breed has the charming demeanor of a Boxer combined with a friskiness and playfulness of a Poodle. The Poodle Boxer mix is muscular owing to its Boxer lineage. This Boxer mixed with Poodle is naturally protective of its family, so it tends to bark when it senses something wrong. Train this early to control barking. This is a designer dog breed that is known for its high energy and therefore requires a lot of exercise and play. This Husky mixed with Poodle is a large dog so feed this with a formula recommended for a large dog. The Poodle Husky mix breed needs training from the time it is brought home to avoid potential problems. This breed was created to come up with a breed that has a cute size of a Corgi and the hypoallergenic coat of a Poodle. There are no specific health issues for this breed but be sure to watch out for obesity and overeating. Avoid giving too many treats and use a schedule to feed this dog. The Poodle Corgi mix breed requires daily exercise, but their small size may be contented with just a short walk. This dog is sharp-witted, easy to train and very eager to please. This dog has low grooming requirements but before you use any dog shampoo or soap, be sure to visit your vet to get the best brand. German Shepherd Poodle puppies need to be fed several times in a day, but adults require only 3 to 4 cups of top quality dog food in a day. Avoid treats to prevent being overweight. This breed is highly intelligent, with moderate to high energy levels and has an easy-going nature. Beagle Poodle mix breeds may be affected by eye disorders, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, luxating patellas and other health issues common to both races. Grooming a Poodle Beagle mix depends on what type of coat the dog has. This dog needs regular exercise. This breed was an attempt to create a dog that has low-shedding characteristics for people who had allergies to dog hair. The Poodle Labrador mix can grow from medium to large with a solid brown, black or apricot color. First generation Poodle Labrador mix breeds have a coarse coat that needs weekly brushing while later generations have longer coats that need daily brushing. First generation dogs are less likely to have common diseases from their parents according to a study made by the University of Sydney. The Chihuahua Poodle mix has tons of energy to spare and is very intelligent and very curious. You need a professional groomer for long-haired dogs to prevent tangles and to keep the coat healthy. These are common health issues common to these two breeds. The Poodle Chow Chow mix needs plenty of exercises. Combine this, and you get a lively and brilliant Border Collie Poodle mix. This breed is medium-sized, with a lively and smart demeanor, making this dog perfect for livestock herding. The coat of the Poodle Border Collie mix could vary from one dog to another and can be curly to moderately long. Rely only on a reputable breeder when looking for a Poodle Border Collie mix. This will minimize any health-related conditions. Usually, the size of the Poodle affects the size of the pup. A Poodle comes in standard, miniature and toy sizes. This dog is going to be very intelligent because its parent breeds are known as the smartest dogs. The Poodle Australian Shepherd mix needs a lot of protein to burn because it is a very energetic breed. Usually, a standard Dachshund and a Toy Poodle are used to develop this breed. The Poodle St. Bernard mix is prone to some hereditary health issues prevalent in both breeds including bloat, eye disease, hip dysplasia, idiopathic epilepsy, immune-related disorders, and gastric dilation-volvulus, to name a few. It could be small to a medium-sized dog. This mixed breed may have a short to medium length coat. To find a Poodle American Bulldog mix pup, check out local shelters and rescue centers before buying one from reputable breeders. A Poodle American Bulldog mix that has more natural and less extreme looks can reduce some common health issues of the parent breeds. Very little information about this breed exists. The best way to find out about the characteristics, appearance, and temperament of this mix breed is to take a look at its parent breeds. The Poodle Cane Corso mix is an active and loyal breed. The Poodle is a very active type of dog while the Cane Corso is an Italian dog breed developed to guard property and for hunting. The only available evidence of the Poodle Cane Corso mix breed is photographs of these dogs. You need to socialize this mix breed early so it will grow up to be an affectionate pet and be great with kids. The Poodle Shar Pei mix dates back to the s or 90s, the era where breeders may have started to crossbreed different purebred dogs to get the best traits. A Poodle Shar Pei breed may pick up the willful and stubborn nature of the Shar Pei making it a challenge to train. Because of its parent breeds, it will make a good watchdog. This is a designer dog that was created due to the increased demand for smaller, gentler and hypoallergenic versions of these breeds. The coat of the Akita Poodle mix can range from very short like the Akita coat and the curly like the Poodle. Start the obedience training of the Poodle Akita mix early on to prevent behavioral problems. Bath your mixed breed dog only as necessary since frequent baths can dry their skin. The Poodle Blue Heeler mix has a Wolf background so consider a raw food diet which is a good diet for this type of breed. This is a designer breed that is brilliant like a Poodle and outgoing as an English Bulldog. These characteristics have made the Poodle English Bulldog the ideal family pet. The Poodle English Bulldog mix has a large head, floppy ears, and a dull facial expression. Although this breed is bright, it may show some stubbornness. So train this early to be able to get rid of any misbehavior. This breed is known to be hypoallergenic, but sadly there is no pure, hypoallergenic breed. There may be specific health issues of the Poodle Golden Retriever mix coming from both parent breeds. Have your pet checked by the vet at least every 4 to 6 months. Golden Retriever Poodle mix is just too friendly and too lovable, so it is not a good watchdog. It is a heavy dog that can weigh anywhere from 85 to pounds. This is a loving, friendly, affectionate and social dog that will love to spend time with its master and family. The Poodle Great Pyrenees mix can inherit genetic health issues from both parent and just one parent breed. Before you contact breeders, check local shelters or rescue centers for possible Poodle Great Pyrenes that you can adopt. The only way to learn about this breed is to understand the characteristics and appearance of its parent breeds. If the dog takes to the characteristics of a Rhodesian Ridgeback, then expect a larger dog with a muscular appearance. If it takes to its Poodle lineage, then a smaller version with more attractive appearance should be expected. The Poodle Rhodesian Ridgeback mix breed is very active, highly intelligent and thus may be trusted as a hunter and a watchdog. The Poodle Rhodesian Ridgeback mix may inherit the health issues of both the parent breeds. You need to take the Poodle Pitbull mix at least every four or six times a year to a vet. The French Bulldog Poodle mix can be loyal, playful, good with pets and kids and highly intelligent just like its parent breeds. These are common health issues for both parent breeds. The Poodle Doberman mix will need a lot of exercises because both parents are known to be very active. The Poodle Doberman mix breed has been refined and was known to be bred to become guard dogs. This dog is large and can weigh up to pounds. But the size could depend on which parent breed the pup takes up to. Most Poodle Newfoundland mixes can have either brown, grey, black or in different color combinations. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. This could be a more aggressive shedder that will be harder to groom with the wrinkles from the Shar Pei. Be prepared to brush them a few times a week. Either way, get ready to invest in a good vacuum if you want to keep your floors clean! Give them baths as needed, but not so much that you dry out their skin. Never tie your dog up outside - that is inhumane and not fair to him. What are the exercise requirements? Like all dogs they will do better if they get plenty of exercise. This mix will probably require a lot of exercise. Plan on exercising them daily to keep their energy level down. He might be bouncing off the walls so get ready. A tired dog is a good dog. What are the training requirements? Though intelligent, it might be stubborn and demanding. All dogs respond best to positive reinforcement. So make sure to praise her when she does well. She is an intelligent dog who loves to please, and loves a physical challenge. Make sure to take her to the park and doggy day care to get her around as many people and dogs as possible. Each one is unique and has different dietary requirements. Most dogs in the U. As a result, a dog that may have looked like a fuzzy Shar-Pei as a puppy may end up looking more like a wrinkly Poodle and vice versa. The same goes for their temperament. Shar-Peis and Poodles are fairly similar, temperament-wise, but there are a few key differences to how each breed behaves. If you have your heart set on a dog that acts like one of the parent breeds, a Shar Poo might not be right for you. With their families or people they trust, they can be absolutely wild, bouncing off the walls and tearing around the house like furry little cyclones. However, as soon as an unfamiliar face drops by, they turn into wallflowers. This dog may never run up to strangers and start licking their face, but you want to make sure their timidity never turns into aggression. As for intelligence, Poodles are often considered one of the smartest if not the smartest dog breeds in the world. Your Shar Poo may end up being a dog that can figure out whatever you want them to do in seconds but will refuse to do it unless properly motivated. Are These Dogs Good for Families? If you keep them in an apartment, expect to need to take them for a long walk or two or down to the park for a game of fetch. They like to have all the human attention to themselves and may react poorly if forced to share. As you can expect, this means that your Shar Poo should likely be the only pet in the house and certainly the only dog. Their reactivity toward cats and other pets is less well-known. It likely varies from individual to individual. There are a few things that you can likely expect, however. Expect to spend a good amount on kibble, as food will likely be your biggest ongoing expense when owning one of these dogs. Feeding your dog a high-quality diet will go a long way toward keeping them happy and healthy and could even help extend their lifespan. Just as important as feeding them healthy food is feeding them an appropriate amount of it. Exercise strict portion control, as allowing them to free-feed can lead to obesity, which is terrible for their health. Be careful about going overboard with treats and scraps too. This may require a bit of training, though, as they may be averse to seeing other people or reactive to dogs that they encounter. Frequent obedience training is a must, and you will likely need to provide them with puzzle toys and similar activities in order to keep their brains sharp. The important thing is to only use positive reinforcement during your training sessions. As a result, first-time owners may want to start with a different breed. These animals have a short-to-medium length coat. Simply take a damp cloth, and massage it into the wrinkles to wipe away any dirt and bacteria that may have accumulated there. The Chinese Shar-Pei is a dog that is devoted and fiercely loyal to their families. They may have an independent nature, but they do bond closely with their families and are affectionate with them. They tend to have a calm and gentle demeanor at home and also tend to do well with older children. Due to their guardian instincts, they can be wary and standoffish with strangers. Socialization and training early and often are important for any dog breed. But, as a breed with a protective instinct, they are particularly important for the Shar-Pei. A poorly socialized or poorly trained Shar-Pei can become territorial and their natural suspicion towards strangers can turn into aggression if they perceive them as a threat. The Shar-Pei is a highly adaptable dog breed. They thrive in large homes with fenced-in yards where they can patrol, play, and run.
