Where do Black and Chocolate Labradors come from? The information that determines whether or not your Labrador is basically black or basically chocolate is passed on through a pair of genes. Why black is a dominant color: It is normal for dominant genes to switch off, or over-ride, recessive genes. And that is exactly what happens here. A dog with BB genes will be black, because he has no little b gene, the one that gives us a brown coat. But a Bb dog will be black too, because if the dominant black gene is present, it switches off the brown gene. How chocolate Labradors are made: Even though a dog inherits a little b gene, the dog will only appear brown if no black gene B is present at all. White Labrador dogs are usually specifically created by breeders, who have been broadening the color range of Yellow Labradors for decades in order to widen their market. White Labradors are more likely to be English Labradors than American Labradors because of the history of the breeding. This means they will also have the stockier, broader look of the English Lab. Although he isn't my first rottweiler he's actually my third , he is the first animal I've needed to rehome. So needless to say, this is a very new and highly emotional scenario for me. So a little about us, I'll try to be brief. Otto came into my life about two years ago, after I responded to a gumtree ad and he was in one hell of a sorry state. It took a little while to work out what he needed, as the original owners were far from up front about how neglected he'd been and it took a whole lot more time to get him healthy. He was way under weight, had terribly fly bitten ears, mange all over his back and hind quarters, appeared to have never been brushed or bathed and had absolutely zero training. He didn't even have a bed to send with him, I assume he didn't have one at all, nor did he have any toys or even a collar. It was tragic. Now, after a lot of work, he's in excellent condition and although training is a constant work in progress; he's a very, very clever boy and always eager to please. He's always been good with my daughter's little fox terrier, and she's not exactly the friendliest of dogs either, always loves to have visitors over and if we can keep calm, he loves to play with the bigger kids for as long as they will humour him. Smaller children would not be suitable though, as he can get quite excited, manners are easily forgotten and little people get knocked down. All in all, he's just so full of personality, much more than any other adult rottweiler I've had the pleasure of handling and the rewards he gives me back always made the challenges worth it.
