And so as large and active dogs, German Shepherds tend to lose a lot of water from their bodies throughout the day. This then causes them to get thirsty and rehydrate. Simply put, German Shepherds drink a lot of water simply because they need to. In general, dogs need to drink at least an ounce or about 0. Meaning, a German Shepherd male that weighs an average of 71 to 88 pounds will generally drink 71 to 88 ounces or 2 to 2. While a female German Shepherd that weighs an average of 62 to 70 pounds will drink 62 to 70 ounces or 1. Instead, they cool themselves by panting to evaporate water from their tongues and mouths. In doing so, their bodies lose a lot of water that needs to be replaced. With that, German Shepherds that are exposed to extreme heat or physical activities need much more water than usual. Diet The type of food a German Shepherd eats also factors into water consumption. Those who eat wet canned food will tend to need less water than those fed exclusively with dry food. A combination of both may either increase or decrease water intake. Age German Shepherd puppies have their own set of rules when it comes to water intake and actually need more water than adults at one point. Medication Some medications may also increase thirst due to increased urine production and other side-effects. For instance, psychogenic polydipsia is a condition characterized by increased water intake for seemingly no cause or reason. Instead, this condition is often associated with boredom, stress, and attention-seeking behavior. So increased thirst and water intake can most definitely be a cause of concern. But the real question is, when should you worry? But to be certain, you can try to look for other unusual symptoms apart from excessive drinking. For instance, if you notice your German Shepherd excessively panting, has dry gums, and being lethargic, then it is most likely dehydrated and needs veterinary care immediately. Do also check for excessive urination as that may indicate a number of major diseases including kidney disease or diabetes. Final Thoughts To recap, German Shepherds drink a lot of water, but mostly because they need to. As large and active dogs they need to drink plenty of water daily to stay hydrated and function properly. So provide your German Shepherd free access to fresh and clean water all the time. Again, excessive drinking may indicate underlying medical conditions and warrant a visit to the vet. Post navigation. Disease Increased Activity Increased activity leads to more water loss through sweat and panting, hence the need for German Shepherds to drink more to rehydrate and regulate their body temperature. Physical activity is essential for a German Shepherd's health and well-being. However, more activity means more water is required. Like humans, dogs lose water through sweating mainly through their paws and panting. These mechanisms help cool their bodies down, but they must also replace the lost fluids with drinking water. The more intense the activity, the more water your dog will need. For example, after a long walk, run, or play session, it's normal for your German Shepherd to drink more than usual. It's essential to always provide access to clean, fresh water, especially after exercise, to help them replenish lost fluids and prevent dehydration. Hot Weather Hot weather can make German Shepherds drink more water as they lose fluids through panting, a natural cooling mechanism. Thus, they need to consume more water to replace lost fluids. Dogs, including German Shepherds, have different ways of dealing with hot weather than humans. Instead of sweating throughout their bodies, dogs primarily cool themselves down through panting, which leads to a higher rate of water evaporation from their bodies. This evaporation, while helping to cool them down, also significantly loses body water. As the temperature rises, German Shepherds will increase their water consumption to compensate for this water loss and prevent dehydration. Access to fresh, clean water is essential to hydrate your dog during hot weather. Keeping them in a cool, shaded area during the hottest parts of the day is also advisable to minimize heat stress and excessive water loss. Always be aware of the signs of dehydration in dogs, such as excessive panting, dry nose and gums, and decreased activity levels. Diet German Shepherds on a dry diet typically need more water to help facilitate digestion, as dry kibble has a low moisture content compared to wet or raw food. The type of diet a dog follows directly impacts their water needs. While dry food requires your dog to drink more water, it doesn't mean it's an inferior choice. Many pet owners choose kibble for its convenience, long shelf life, and potential dental benefits. However, if you feed your German Shepherd a dry diet, always provide ample fresh, clean water to meet their hydration needs. Monitoring your dog's water intake can help you ensure they're staying hydrated regardless of their diet. Age Age influences water consumption in German Shepherds. Puppies, due to growth and higher activity levels, may drink more. Similarly, older dogs might have health issues increasing their water intake. Both ends of the age spectrum in German Shepherds can see increased water consumption. Puppies are typically more active and are growing rapidly, which necessitates more water. They also have smaller bladders and may drink small amounts frequently. On the other hand, senior dogs may also consume more water. As dogs age, their risk of developing health issues such as kidney disease or diabetes, which can increase thirst, rises. Additionally, older dogs might have a reduced ability to concentrate urine, which can lead to increased water intake. Regardless of age, it's essential to ensure your German Shepherd has access to clean, fresh water at all times and monitor any significant changes in their drinking habits. Regular vet checks can help detect any age-related health issues early. Health Issues Specific health issues, such as diabetes, kidney disease, or urinary tract infections, can make German Shepherds drink more water due to increased thirst, a common symptom of these conditions. Health issues are a significant factor that can influence your German Shepherd's water consumption. Diabetes and kidney disease affect the body's ability to filter and retain water, increasing thirst and urination. Similarly, urinary tract infections can cause discomfort and frequent urination, making your dog drink more water to compensate. Monitoring your German Shepherd's drinking habits and watching for any sudden changes is crucial. An unusual increase in water intake, especially when accompanied by other symptoms like weight loss, changes in appetite, or lethargy, should not be ignored. It may indicate an underlying health issue requiring immediate veterinary attention. Regular vet check-ups can also help in the early detection and management of these conditions, ensuring your pet's health and well-being. Medications Certain medications given to German Shepherds can increase their thirst as a side effect, increasing water intake to quench this thirst and maintain hydration. It's not uncommon for some medications prescribed to your German Shepherd to have side effects, one of which could be increased thirst. For instance, drugs like prednisone, a type of steroid often used to treat inflammation, can cause an increase in water consumption. Similarly, certain medications for heart disease or anti-seizure drugs can also increase thirst. If your German Shepherd starts to drink more water around the same time a new medication has been introduced, the two may be connected. However, it's essential not to stop giving your pet their medication without first consulting your veterinarian. Instead, provide your dog access to clean, fresh water, monitor their intake, and discuss any concerns with your vet during follow-up visits or over the phone. They can offer advice, adjust the dosage, or suggest alternative treatments if necessary. Stress or Anxiety Stress or anxiety can trigger excessive drinking in German Shepherds as part of their coping mechanism. This behavior is often observed during stressful situations or significant changes. Just like humans, dogs can also experience stress and anxiety. Situations such as moving to a new house, adding a new family member, or being left alone for long periods can induce stress in German Shepherds. In response to these stressful situations, some dogs might start drinking more water as a coping mechanism. However, it's crucial to rule out any medical reasons for excessive drinking before attributing it to psychological factors. If you notice that your German Shepherd drinks more water during stressful periods, try to identify and address the stressor. You should introduce changes gradually or use positive reinforcement techniques to reduce stress. Consider seeking advice from a professional dog behaviorist or your vet for persistent issues. Dehydration Dehydration in German Shepherds can lead to increased water intake. When a dog's body lacks sufficient water, it triggers thirst to restore balance and prevent further dehydration. Dehydration, or the lack of enough water in the body, can significantly increase your German Shepherd's water intake. It's a compensatory response by the body to restore fluid balance and prevent dehydration. Preventing dehydration in your German Shepherd is crucial by providing constant access to fresh, clean water. However, if your dog seems excessively thirsty and consumes more water than usual, it's essential to check for other signs of dehydration. These can include dry gums, decreased skin elasticity, and lethargy. If you suspect your dog is dehydrated, consult a vet immediately. Prompt rehydration, often requiring veterinary intervention, is key to preventing serious complications. Pregnancy or Lactation Pregnant or lactating German Shepherds require more water due to the increased demands of carrying and nourishing puppies, leading to an increased water intake. The gestation and lactation period place unique demands on a female German Shepherd's body, increasing the need for water. When pregnant, a dog's body works harder to nourish the growing puppies, leading to an increased metabolic rate and, consequently, a higher water demand. This demand increases even more during lactation. Producing milk to feed the puppies requires a substantial amount of water. As such, it's perfectly normal for a lactating German Shepherd to drink more water than usual. To support your dog during pregnancy and lactation, ensure she has constant access to clean water. Monitor her drinking and overall health closely, and maintain regular veterinary check-ups. If any sudden changes or if she shows signs of distress, lethargy, or decreased appetite, seek veterinary care immediately. Specific diseases can significantly influence a German Shepherd's water consumption. Similarly, liver disease can interfere with the body's ability to manage water and electrolyte balance properly, leading to increased water intake. These diseases, along with others like kidney disease or diabetes, often present increased thirst and urination as early symptoms. If your German Shepherd drinks more water than usual, it could indicate an underlying health issue. Therefore, it's essential to recognize sudden changes in your dog's water intake. If your German Shepherd is consuming water excessively, especially if accompanied by other signs like changes in appetite, lethargy, or unusual behavior, consult with your veterinarian as soon as possible. Timely diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve the prognosis for most diseases. Do German Shepherds like drinking water? Yes, German Shepherds, like all dogs, require and enjoy drinking water. It's essential for their health and well-being, aiding digestion, nutrient absorption, and body temperature regulation. Water is crucial for all dogs, including German Shepherds, for survival and optimal health. It serves various bodily functions - it aids digestion, helps absorb nutrients, maintains body temperature, lubricates joints, and facilitates many other physiological processes. While German Shepherds enjoy drinking water, their intake can vary based on their size, age, diet, activity level, and health status. It's essential to always provide your German Shepherd with access to clean, fresh water and to monitor their drinking habits. Changes in their water intake can sometimes indicate health issues, so if you notice your German Shepherd drinking significantly more or less than usual, it would be wise to consult with a vet. Should I worry if my dog is drinking too much water? Yes, you should be concerned if your dog is drinking excessively. If you notice your dog is drinking excessively, it's crucial to consult with your vet as soon as possible. Early diagnosis often leads to more effective treatment and a better prognosis. Remember, while it's normal for a dog's water consumption to vary depending on their diet, activity level, and the weather, a sudden or dramatic increase in drinking is often a cause for concern. Always keep an eye on changes in your pet's behaviors, as they could be communicating their discomfort or the onset of an illness. Regular veterinary check-ups can also help detect any health issues early. German Shepherd puppy obsessed with drinking water A German Shepherd puppy's obsession with drinking water could be experiencing high thirst due to increased activity, diet, or potential health issues. Consult a vet if concerned. A German Shepherd puppy obsessed with drinking water may seem unusual, but it could be due to various factors. Given their high energy levels and rapid growth, Puppies consume more water. Also, if fed a mostly dry kibble diet, they may drink more water to help digestion. However, if your puppy's water obsession seems excessive or is accompanied by other concerning behaviors such as frequent urination, lethargy, or changes in appetite, it could indicate a health issue. Conditions like urinary tract infections, diabetes, or kidney disease could cause increased thirst. It's essential to monitor your puppy's behavior and water consumption closely. If you're concerned about your German Shepherd puppy's obsession with water, it would be prudent to consult with a vet for guidance. Final words Understanding your German Shepherd's water needs is essential for their health and well-being. German Shepherds, like all dogs, require sufficient water daily, with adults needing about 0. However, age, diet, activity levels, weather, and health can significantly influence their water consumption. Therefore, always watch for any significant changes in your pet's drinking habits and seek veterinary advice. Remember, whether an adult German Shepherd or a lively puppy, always provide constant access to clean water. Monitoring and understanding your pet's water needs can contribute significantly to your German Shepherd's happy, healthy, and active life. Frequently asked questions Do you still have questions? Check our FAQ section, and you can find your answer here! The number of bowls a German Shepherd drinks can vary, but generally, they need about 0. Depending on bowl size, this can equate to bowls for an average adult dog. Remember, it's more important to measure your dog's water intake based on weight rather than the number of bowls they consume. Age, diet, weather, and activity level can also influence how much water your German Shepherd should drink. Always ensure they have access to clean, fresh water, and consult with your vet if you notice any drastic changes in their drinking habits. A German Shepherd puppy should drink approximately one-half cup of water every two hours. That equates to about cups of water daily, which can vary depending on age, diet, and activity level. Remember, puppies are more active and may require more water than adult dogs. Always ensure your German Shepherd puppy has access to fresh, clean water and adjust the amounts as they grow and their needs change. If you notice excessive thirst, it's a good idea to consult with your vet. Jan Reisen points out that how much puppy drinks depends on activity level, size, and age. Puppies consume more water than adults. When puppies start eating solid food, half a cup of water every two hours is reasonable. After weaning, a puppy needs half an ounce to an ounce of water per pound of body weight. An eight-week-old puppy might require 20 ounces of water daily. One of the reasons water is so vital to your German Shepherd puppy is because of its influence on the metabolic process. This process includes breathing, blood flow, brain activity, and digestion. Sufficient water, which makes up most of the blood supply, allows the blood to transport oxygen and clear away toxins that can harm your puppy. Because insufficient water negatively impacts this process, a dog is at risk of organ damage. How much water your puppy gets also allows them to regulate their body temperature. However, panting is a double-edged sword, in that your puppy loses more water during this process. When hot weather or heavy physical exertion is making your puppy pant more, the dog will require more water. When everything functions correctly, your dog will have an appropriate energy level. An adequate energy level helps ensure proper health. Taking up the water at night is a good idea, although you will need to make sure you have a consistent schedule. Water and food for your puppy should be taken up two or three hours before your family usually goes to bed. Any changes in how much your puppy drinks may require closer evaluation at your next vet visit. Even young German Shepherd puppies have good instincts about self-regulating their water usage. However, diarrhea, excessive urination, fever, and vomiting can all dehydrate your puppy. A diet of too much dry food can also cause dehydration. Making sure you know the dehydration signs so you can check your puppy for them makes a difference. Wendy Bedwell-Wilson emphasizes the importance of proper hydration and also points out a couple of ways to find out if your dog is adequately hydrated. Skin that snaps back into place is a sign of a well-hydrated dog, while skin that slowly snaps back is a sign of dehydration. Sticky or day gums are a sign of dehydration. Also, gently press their gums and see how long it takes for them to change back to a healthy pink color, no more than three seconds. When your German Shepherd puppy is mildly dehydrated, gradually give them smaller sips of water. Ice cubes can help provide extra hydration relatively quickly. You can also try an electrolyte powder mix, as these are quite effective. If your puppy is severely dehydrated, evidenced by a loss of skin elasticity, consider this situation a medical emergency. When your puppy has severe dehydration, IV fluids may be necessary to restore proper fluids. However, there are a few things you can do to encourage more drinking. The cleaner both the water and the bowl are, the more they will entice your dog. When you see your puppy drinking water out of the bowl, praise the dog and give them a treat. German Shepherds are very responsive to rewards, and associating drinking water with a reward will encourage them to do so even without prompting on your part. Offering the water in the form of ice cubes can be an enticement for a dog. Dogs often love ice cubes as a treat that provides plenty of amusement. Another bonus is that, if your puppy is teething, the ice cubes can provide relief. Using chicken or bone broth to flavor the water can also entice your dog to drink more of it. Sometimes the added flavor provides an incentive that water alone does not. However, make sure you check the water for freshness because broth can spoil. Sometimes, all you need to do is make water a little more interesting for your puppy. Dogs love the variety as much as we do. Your German Shepherd Dog can, in fact, consume too much water. Overhydrating, also known as water intoxication, can be just as dangerous as dehydration in its own way. If your puppy is showing symptoms, veterinary help might be necessary. When your dog plays in the water a lot of swims, they may accidentally swallow too much water. Drinking too much water at one time can also lead to this problem. It is important to always supervise your dog around water. Water intoxication can make your dog feel very sluggish and lose coordination, including having a staggering gait. Nausea, vomiting, and bloating are some of the gastrointestinal symptoms that might occur. Dilated pupils, excessive drooling , and pale gums are also signs of water intoxication. When your dog has these symptoms after having had a lot of water to drink or has been swimming, overhydration is very likely. Top Dog Tips highlights the importance of seeking veterinary help. More severe symptoms might include difficulty breathing, collapse, coma, or even death. Possible treatments include IV fluids for electrolyte balance, diuretics to help the dog urinate, and mannitol in case water intoxication has caused cranial pressure. Any water ingested can still be absorbed without intervention. There is nothing wrong with innocent water play, as seen in this video. Increased water intake is often typical for growing puppies as their kidneys continue to develop. Because of this, it is important to provide access to fresh and clean water for your puppy. Still curious why your puppy drinks a lot of water? Read on as we discuss the normal water intake of puppies, why puppies tend to drink more water, and the risks associated with overdrinking! The amount of water a puppy needs can vary depending on factors such as their size, age, activity level, and the weather. For example, a pound puppy would require 5 to 10 ounces of water daily. As a result, they may have an increased thirst compared to adult dogs. During puppyhood, their kidneys cannot properly concentrate urine which leads to the increased frequency of urination until around 11 to 16 weeks of age. As their bodies grow, they also require water to support the development and proper functioning of their organs. Because of this, it may be difficult to keep your puppies properly hydrated. It is crucial to provide access to fresh, clean water at all times to ensure their hydration needs are met. While increased water intake is often considered normal for growing puppies, it can also be a sign of an underlying disease or health condition. Image Credit: marketlan, Shutterstock Risks of Drinking Too Much Water While staying hydrated is crucial for puppies, excessive drinking can pose risks to their health. One concern is the potential for overhydration, also known as water intoxication. This condition occurs when the concentration of sodium in the bloodstream becomes diluted, causing issues such as lethargy, vomiting, seizures, and even coma. When Is Overdrinking a Cause for Concern? However, certain situations may warrant closer attention. Additionally, if your puppy exhibits signs such as frequent urination, excessive panting, weight loss, or changes in behavior, these could be indicators of an underlying health issue that requires professional evaluation. Image Credit: Mihail Guta, Shutterstock Signs of Overhydration While most common owners monitor the dangers of dehydration, overhydration can be equally harmful and should be properly monitored as well. To help you recognize the signs of overhydration and excessive drinking, here are some common presentations to look out for: Lethargy or weakness. Breed Info If you are thinking of getting a German Shepherd you may have wondered do German Shepherds drink a lot of water? This article will answer that question, explain how much water your GSD should be drinking on a daily basis, and things that could cause your German Shepherd to drink more water than normal. Yes, German Shepherds are large dogs and as such will drink more water than a smaller dog. In addition, German Shepherds are very active so they will need more water to keep hydrated than more sedentary dogs. Normally, dogs should drink an ounce of water for every pound they weigh on a daily basis, but I found that many German Shepherds drink a little more than one ounce per pound. My German Shepherd is 72 pounds, so that means she should be consuming around 72 ounces of water daily. However, there are various conditions that could cause your German Shepherd to need to drink more than this on a regular basis. If it seems like your dog is drinking excessively, look to see if any of the below conditions are present that would increase their need for water. When it is hot outside, your GSD will drink more as a way of cooling themselves down. Conversely, colder air tends to be drier, and the dry air can make your dog dehydrated, thus you may find your pup drinking more in the wintertime as well. Exercise Another reason your German Shepherd will drink a lot of water is because they have been physically active. Just like humans get thirsty when exercising, so do dogs. So, if your GSD just finished running around, expect them to be thirstier than normal. Medication There are a lot of medications that have the side effect of causing thirst in dogs. When my girl was put on antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory, the vet told me to expect her to need more water than normal. If your dog was just put on a new medication, that could be the cause of the extra drinking, but check with your vet to be certain. Illnesses Another reason a German Shepherd will drink more water is because they have some sort of illness. Conditions such as cancer, liver disease and diabetes require your dog to drink more water and their body tries to fight off the illness. Also, as stated above, sometimes the medications they are on to help with the illness also increases their thirst. Diet What your dog eats directly affects how much they drink. Dogs that consume a dry kibble will usually need more to drink than a dog that is on a wet food diet. Also, if you give your dog the occasional human food treat like peanut butter , bread , bacon , or fries you may find that they drink more after consuming these foods. Food that are dry, sticky, or salty will cause your dog to take some extra trips to the water bowl. Age Age is another factor is to consider when looking at water consumption. Puppies are known for drinking quite a bit. This is normal though because as your GSD pup is growing their bodies need more water to support their developing system. Older dogs can also drink more because elderly dogs are more prone to developing conditions that would cause thirst such as diabetes, various infections, liver or kidney disease among other illnesses. If you have an older dog that has been drinking more than normal, make an appointment with the vet just to be sure nothing more serious than dehydration is going on. Final Thoughts German Shepherds can definitely drink more water than some other dog breeds. Heavier water consumption is normal for a large active breed like German Shepherds but there are also other factors that can cause your dog to drink more such as age, illness, medication and the weather. An automatic water bowl is a great tool for providing fresh water all day long. This behavior may warrant a visit to the vet, especially if your dog is showing other concerning symptoms. Here are the most common reasons for German Shepherds that drink a lot of water. Your German Shepherd has a Medical Illness A medical condition can most often lead to an increased thirst. Your German Shepherd may be affected by infections like urinary tract infection or longer-term conditions like diabetes. The vet will observe and ask about a number of symptoms and may also request a urine and blood test for further diagnosis. For example, German Shepherds that eat too much dry food may drink a lot more water than usual. Dog foods like kibble contain very little water content so the German Shepherd will need to compensate that by drinking more water. The same applies for high-sodium food, which should be avoided for a number of health reasons. Large amounts of salt consumption can lead to sodium poisoning so make sure your German Shepherd stays away from such treats. Your German Shepherd is Feeling Hot German shepherds are able to tolerate hot summer weather but not for too long of a period. You may notice the dog is always trying to look for a cool shaded spot to rest in. If you have a backyard then the German Shepherd may also try to dig a hole to rest in. Large dog breeds like German Shepherds will need a decent amount of water to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Generally-speaking, an adult dog will need up to 2. Disclaimer: The content is not intended to be a substitute for professional veterinarian advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of a veterinarian when in doubt. Your German Shepherd should be drinking about one ounce of water per pound of body weight. This is according to Pet MD. According to AKC. So now you know how much water a german shepherd is meant to drink, you may have realized that your pup is drinking too much. Here are the most common reasons a german shepherd may be drinking too much. Urinary tract infections and diseases like diabetes, polydipsia, and kidney infections can all cause your German Shepherd to end up drinking more. Remember, German shepherds are wandering around with a huge thick coat on, so it will be a lot harder for them to stay cool. If you think your German Shepherd is too hot, check out these great ways to cool them down! Fortunately, this is considered a behavioral problem rather than something more serious. And it most often happens in water-loving breeds. A Stomach Bug Your pup could also be suffering from a stomach bug of some kind as well. If this is the case, you may notice them vomiting or suffering from diarrhea. As diarrhea and vomiting can seriously dehydrate your pup very quickly. Medication The medication you may be giving your german Shepherd could be making them a lot thirstier as well. Anti-inflammatory drugs, heart failure drugs, and seizure medication are all some of the types that can dehydrate your pup. Likewise, senior dogs often end up drinking more as they begin to get conditions that affect their health and thirst. You might also want to consider changing the dry food their currently eating, as another type might not be so dehydrating. Continue Giving Them Access To Water Unless your vet says otherwise, you should make sure that you continue to give your German Shepherd all the access to water they need. Unless your vet specifically says not to. What Should You Avoid Doing? There are also some things you want to avoid doing when your German Shepherd is drinking a lot more water as well. The condition known as water intoxication can often result in vomiting, nausea, bloating, and other gastrointestinal issues. Cheaper than replacing everything they might break. Sable is a color that will generally carry a fading gene and will lighten in color as they age. We also have the bi colors which are most generally black with the white Bernese markings. You may encounter a solid color mini bernedoodle as well and they will generally consist of a solid black with a few small white markings that will generally disappear as they mature in size. At HC Bernedoodles we avoid breeding solid colors due to being the least appealing look in the Bernedoodle. We may see a more wavey coat in some vs. While the wavey coat may be more appealing in appearance, the curly coat is more suitable for allergy sufferers due to generally being less shedding than the wavey coat. It is difficult to predict these coats as young puppies due to observing a puppy coat vs. Miniature Bernedoodle Temperament The miniature bernedoodle may be more active than the larger Bernedoodle breeds due to the toy or miniature poodle being more of an active breed. They are a highly recommended family dog breed and are tremendous with children due to carrying the genes of the affectionate, loving Bernese mountain dog. While intelligence simplifies training in the mini bernedoodle it can work in a negative sense as well. If training is neglected you may see bad habits develop earlier than in breeds that may not be known to be as intelligent. Therefore it is highly recommended to start training at an early age and be consistent in training exercises. Health Health is possibly the greatest attribute in the F1 mini bernedoodle. Being a smaller size hybrid cross they are the least likely to inherit congenital health problems, with the likelihood of hip or elbow dysplasia being greatly reduced due to the much smaller size. Exercise The miniature bernedoodle requires a moderate amount of exercise. Daily exercise is generally sufficient. If you would like to be notified, please contact us and we will notify you when our Mini Bernedoodles become available. Mini Bernedoodles Past Litters. Life Span Did You Know? They tend to be affectionate and loving dogs that make great family pets. They are even known to make great therapy dogs! Although they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other canine registries. One of the facts about Bernedoodles is that they are true companion dogs. They are cuddly companions that love nothing more than being with their favorite humans. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, Mini Bernedoodles tend to get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Miniature Bernedoodles are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in larger homes as well as apartments. They are sensitive to heat and extreme cold, but do well in most climates. Because they bond so closely with their families and thrive on attention, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time and can develop separation anxiety if you do not work with them early on. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. You can ask about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Mini Bernedoodles are intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. This makes them a highly trainable dog that is a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They can become stubborn if training is not consistent or clear. Although their coat tends to be low-shedding and will range from straight to wavy or curly, the Mini Bernedoodle coat requires some maintenance. Daily brushing is recommended to remove tangles and prevent mats. Professional grooming is recommended every weeks. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep them from growing too long and causing issues. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed help to prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, Mini Bernedoodles are more prone to developing gum disease. Good dental care for dogs early and consistently throughout their life can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Daily tooth brushing, plus cleanings at the vet as needed, is ideal. Although Mini Bernedoodles will be playful and have bursts of energy while playing, they are not high-energy dogs. They tend to sit in a more moderate range. Daily walks plus some playtime throughout the day are usually enough for them. But, they love spending time with you and will likely be up for more activity if you are. They may be smaller dogs, but they also tend to be relatively athletic. When puppies finish growing , you can try higher-impact activities like running, hiking, training for dog sports, and more. Fully-grown Mini Bernedoodles usually stand inches tall. They can range from pounds. F1B and F2 Mini Bernedoodles usually weigh pounds and are on the shorter side of the range. Mini Bernedoodles generally live for years on average. Featured Mini Bernedoodle Article.
Rides in car well: moderate - loves the car, but is very curious Destructive: no Needs a home with a yard: yes Needs a home with another dog: no Can live in an apartment: no Foster Comments Bronco has been an absolute delight since I brought him home from boarding. He is the most affectionate boy and always wants to be near his humans. Bronco is eager to show you how much he loves you but sometimes he forgets he is such a big boy, and would therefore be best suited for a home with older kids, due to jumping and some mouthing. This behaviour tends to wear off after Bronco is comfortable with you, and the corrections have been made several times, however when needing attention the behaviour continues but is improving as we work on manners. Around the home Bronco is wonderful, and spends a lot of his day sleeping or window watching as he loves being outside. He is still learning some manners and will jump on furniture and counters when looking for attention but can easily be re-directed. During walks, Bronco is very curious but walks very well on a leash. He does exhibit a love for smaller animals, and is still learning to ignore them. He is still getting used to other dogs, and does not show aggression but rather uncertainty. Bronco has shown great improvement with calmer dogs, but tends to become more alert when dogs bark at him, or appear to come toward him. Bronco is such a good boy, and would spend all day sitting in your lap getting scratches and cuddles. He forgets he is so big sometimes and is very eager to show affection so patience and consistency is key with him, but he shows such great potential, and would make a great addition to a home with older kids and an active lifestyle or the ability to burn off extra energy. Inside, there might be the occasional audible sigh when she is trying to communicate something. She is so well-behaved at home. She does not go to the bathroom in the house and thinks that pee pee pads are for resting on. She loves going for rides in the car and also enjoys meal time- she is food motivated! She prefers being with the company of her humans. A good licky mat and calming treats keep her occupied when left alone at home and when she is bored with that, she will just wait by the door until your return. She responds pretty well to a firm tone, She sometimes gets extra excited when she sees other dogs so be mindful when walking her on leash because she will occasionally grumble. I take her on short walks in the morning, evening and sometimes late afternoon and then one longer walk when I can. As far as people go, she is not shy — Champagne is very comfortable going right up to anyone and smelling them. She is excited to go out and she gets playful when you are trying to put her harness on. But she definitely does not play rough. She will make someone a very sweet, gentle companion!! One or both of this puppy's parents have undergone genetic testing. One or both of this puppy's parents are hip certified. One or both of this puppy's parents is OFA Heart certified. This puppy has had early neurological stimulation exercises. It is also important to understand there are different types of golden retrievers which may affect pricing. For example, if you decide to choose the lowest golden retriever cost option, those puppies almost never have the necessary 3rd-party assurances or veterinarian procedures like dewormings, vaccinations, health-tested parents, or a thorough health checkup. These missing costs and services will be your responsibility, making the total cost ultimately the same. Not to mention the added stress on you these extra expenses and issues create! Adopting vs. Please note that depending on the shelter, you may have to pay additional costs for your Golden certain shots and procedures. Depending on if the golden retriever is a boy or a girl may affect the price as well. Some male vs female golden retriever differences may make you prefer one over the other. This will ultimately save you time and money on your golden retriever price because breeders often pay lower veterinary rates than individuals do. Distemper, for example, is a highly contagious disease that attacks the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems of dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure — just a lot of expenses and stress which really adds to the overall cost of your Golden Retriever puppy. It is wise to ask your vet for guidance on this decision. Talk with your vet about the procedure, when you should get it done, and how much it might cost. Dental Care for Your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers, like many dogs, can be prone to dental issues such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. These cleanings typically involve scaling, polishing, and potentially extractions if necessary. Some insurance providers offer optional dental coverage as an add-on or as part of more comprehensive plans. If dental coverage is included in the policy, it typically covers a portion of the costs associated with dental cleanings, extractions, and other necessary dental treatments. This typically includes services such as bathing, brushing, trimming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and sometimes additional services like de-shedding or dematting. Some groomers may offer package deals or discounts for regular appointments or bundled services. This monthly expense may seem like an additional cost, but it can be a worthwhile investment when considering the potential savings on veterinary bills for treatments, surgeries, and medications. By having pet insurance in place, you can ensure that your Golden Retriever receives the necessary care without straining your finances in the event of unexpected health issues. Puppy Training and Socialization Classes Attending puppy training and socialization classes is highly recommended for the comprehensive development of your Golden puppy. These classes provide structured learning environments, social interaction, and essential obedience training. By enrolling your Golden Retriever puppy in these classes, you ensure they receive the necessary foundation for good behavior, social skills, and overall well-being. The cost for food will depend on the size, age, and activity level of your companion. Fortunately, the cheaper brands of dog food can be just as good as the more premium brands as long as they meet the standards of AAFCO and are made with minimal processing. When making your decision, make sure to avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives where you can, since they could cause health problems for your dog. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. Over 20 years of knowledge and a heart for your pet and friend. It does not matter what a dog has or can do on a training field. Nor does it matter what a dog can do for a trainer. What does matter is what the dog will do for you, how functional and integrated the training is in your home and everyday life. Our specialized training programs, and the techniques used within the programs, make a difference. All the difference. What also makes a difference is the level of service we provide. This service begins with our desire to understand your specific needs, lifestyle and personal preferences, many of which you may not even be aware of. Through our conversations with you, and the many questions we will have, we will develop an understanding which will enable us to select precisely the right dog for you. Then we customize the training so that your dog is a joy to own from day one. See, I was once a person, maybe like you, with a dog who needed help. In , I went looking for a trainer and a new dog. I found one in the Robb Report magazine. After finding the right dog — a German imported Doberman — I started to go to training class. Now, I had trained dogs in a group setting before but this was one-on-one training and after a few short lessons, me and my new dog were on the way. I kept up the training and then one day, the trainer I was using offered to sell me his business. In I bought his kennel and relocated it to the mountains outside of Harrisburg Pennsylvania. The kennel I bought had been importing and training dogs for a lot of very wealthy clients. The business continued to grow as we now were showing and shipping dogs all over the world. We started with obedience training the German way and moved into personal protection, drug detection, explosive and search and rescue. In , we were approached by a great client who wanted one of the top German Shepherds in the world. Larry was a great dog and his children are still winning all over the world. We train champions as well as family pets and service dogs. Many of the pictures you see on our site are of Imported Malinois and German Shepherds. Larry took North America by storm and won his first show and kept on winning until when he went to live with that loyal client in Guatemala. Training and breeding operations will now be based out of the Florida location, with shipping worldwide. But we now are offering you our knowledge and experience and we look forward to not only helping you but helping your pet become a loving and obedient member of your home. Life Span Did You Know? The Malinois originated in Belgium in the late s and was bred to guard and herd livestock. The Belgian Malinois is one of four different types of Belgian sheepdogs, including the Tervuren , Laekenois, and Groenendael. Of the Belgian sheepdogs, the Malinois is the most common and widely recognized. Although they were originally bred for herding, the Belgian Malinois excels as a military or police dog. The Belgian Malinois was used for military purposes as far back as World War I with many soldiers bringing their Malinois dogs home to the States after the war ended. Following that time, the AKC saw a large increase in registrations of this breed. Today, the Malinois is more commonly found as a working breed. Some facts about Belgian Malinois are that they are versatile working dogs and popular military dogs. These dogs are exceptional at finding explosives, narcotics, and tracking fugitives attempting to avoid apprehension. The Malinois is a protective and highly intelligent dog breed. As one of the most active dog breeds , the Malinois is a hardworking dog that may be serious when on task, but will also likely exhibit a puppy-like playfulness and energy until around the age of three. As long as they are properly socialized and trained, Belgian Malinois tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Because of their protective instinct, they will be initially wary of strangers. But, if they are well-socialized, they will tend to warm up once introduced. They tend to bark to alert, which can become a nuisance if you unintentionally encourage the behavior or do not train your dog to stop barking early on. The Belgian Malinois is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Although they can adapt to apartments if enough time is dedicated to daily exercise and mental stimulation, they are better suited to homes with fenced yards where they can run. They do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat and are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Because they bond closely with their families, have a lot of energy, and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Belgian Malinois include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, and thyroid disease. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As one of the smartest dog breeds , the Belgian Malinois picks up on training quickly and is generally eager to please. However, they are also energetic, get bored easily, have a strong herding instinct, and can be strong-willed. First-time owners are encouraged to enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a trainer. Belgian Malinois have short, waterproof coats that will shed a little year-round and will shed heavier as seasons change. Brushing weekly or a few times a week and the occasional bath are usually enough to keep them comfortable and their coat looking great. Cutting nails once or twice a month is usually enough to keep them from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet as needed, is ideal dental care for dogs. Belgian Malinois are high-energy working dogs. They need a lot of daily activity and a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime and time to run are usually enough, but they will also usually be up for more activity if you are. These dogs are versatile and athletic. Once puppies finish growing and their bones are done developing, you can try a variety of activities with them. Playing frisbee , running, hiking, swimming, and more can all be fun activities to do with your Mal. Fully-grown Belgian Malinois usually stand inches tall and weigh between pounds. Belgian Malinois generally live for years on average. The Belgian Malinois is a world-renowned military service dog. A life-size bronze statue of a Belgian Malinois is featured in the memorial to military dogs in Fayetteville, North Carolina. There are also many dog movies featuring them, like the film Max, which features a great and heart-touching story about a former U. Marine Service Dog. Featured Belgian Malinois Article. Our dogs make a great family dog! They are very active and enjoy going for hikes or walks. My dog training experience includes training protection, French Ring, Schutzhund, bird dogs, sled dogs and herding dogs. Anyone that has had a dog that has shown the pure enjoyment of being able to perform for what they have been bred for, understands. Those are dogs that have the human connection to succeed at any task to where dog and human succeed. Although I have tapped into police lines, the German Shepherd females I am breeding are the type that are super sweet but have the brain power, physique and are extremely bonding. They look after our children. I love everything about the pure bred Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherd but sometimes they can be too much dog for the average person and environment. The cross between the breeds is producing a very solid, relaxed, bonding dog and you can see improvement on health, coat and longevity. I do live on a farm and I still prefer the working temperament but I may not need some of the extreme working drive that are bred for specific tasks per say, such as herding, police, etc. Those dogs our dogs can be used for jogging, hiking, etc. All three breeds bond like no other and can take whatever life throws at them. These dogs adore our children and are able to shut down when they are in our home. I am after breeding the type of dog that barks at strangers but does not full out attack, is still able to go to dog parks and enjoy hiking and is the perfect jogging companion. These dogs should be capable of search and rescue, herding and protection. Our dogs have had zero health issues and minimal shedding of the coat. The weight for a female is typically pounds and a male is pds. They have the extreme good health and orthopedics of the malinois as well. They have the athleticism of the Malinois, but not the extreme drive. They are good natured and have the general disposition of a German shepherd. They tend to be a little more level headed like the German shepherd. They are not as overly active as the malinois and they are much easier to live with as a house pet. They make for an excellent family dog and companion, but also a great protection dog or competition dog. They are a loyal and devoted companion. They are good with children; they do well with other animals. They are very affectionate and love to be the center of attention. They thrive in a family environment and are very protective of their home and family. They love to travel and be a part of any activity that involves their family. They are very quick to pick up anything and tend to train at the level of a malinois. They are more like the malinois in their training ability and pick up any type of training very quickly. They also have the tenacity of the malinois and can work for long periods of time without becoming winded. They need daily exercise not only to stay healthy, but to burn off energy. The Shepinois needs exercise daily, not just once a week. The Shepinois is quick to alert you of any strangers or visitors making them excellent, loyal Protection dog. We feel that the overall genetics behind both breeds in very important to making sure this cross turns out the best of both breeds, although the malinois breed does not tend to have hip and elbow problems, we still do the hip and elbow certification on all of our dogs and by doing so we hope to continue to produce the best quality of both breeds as well as this new cross. At Camelot Shepherds we believe in orthopedic soundness, solid nerve and overall temperament. We want your family companion to live a long and healthy life and to bring you many years of love and dedication. Here are some pictures of the previous Shepinois puppies: About.
Pug: Description: The Pug is a small, stocky, square, thickset dog. The round head is massive with a short, blunt, square shaped muzzle. Moles on the cheeks are considered beauty spots. The teeth meet in a slight undershot bite. The very large, prominent eyes are dark. The small, thin ears are either rose or button shaped. The face has large, deep wrinkles. Height: Dogs inches. Bitches inches. Weight: Dogs pounds. Bitches pounds. Life span: About 12 to 15 years. Function: Behavior: Pugs are people-oriented dogs, right down to the fact that they go through stages of maturity. Puppies are especially playful and always underfoot for want of company. If you have another dog, a pug puppy will often seek out their company for play and adventure. The puppy stage often lasts until the pug is about 2 years old, so be prepared with plenty of patience! Older dogs seem to "settle" into a daily routine, and can be almost invisible until you want them. Pugs want nothing more than to please their owners. Social Aspects: If one were to purchase a social dog, the pug could easily be the right one to choose. Granted, a pug may sleep a lot, but when awake the pug will exhibit plenty of playfulness and enough charm to make most people look past that wrinkled face. Exercise: Pugs are strong dogs with short straight legs. They need to be taken on daily walks. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. As watch dogs: Pugs make good little watchdogs. They have a deep loud bark which sounds like it should belong to a much larger dog. Pugs are not mad or nuisance barkers. Grooming: The smooth, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Brush and comb with a firm bristle brush and shampoo only when necessary. Dry thoroughly after a bath so the dog does not get chilled. The creases on the face must be cleaned regularly. This breed is a seasonally heavy shedder. Health problems: Pugs catch colds easily and are stressed by hot and cold weather. They are prone to allergies and the short muzzle contributes to chronic breathing problems, tending to wheeze and snore. Reproduction: In domestic dogs, sexual maturity puberty begins to happen around age 6 to 12 months for both males and females, although this can be delayed until up to two years old for some large breeds. Developed by crossing the Labrador retriever, poodle, and Cocker Spaniel dog breeds, this designer hybrid was originally created as an allergy-friendly guide dog. Not to be confused with a lively labradoodle, the Australian labradoodle can make an ideal service dog or a low-shedding family companion. Keep on reading to find out! Aussie Labradoodle Overview Size — 14 to 24 inches tall, and weighs between 15 and 65 pounds Coat — Any length, wavy, straight, or curly, single coat, color varies Shedding — Minimal shedding Lifespan — 12 to 15 years Temperament — Highly intelligent, friendly, energetic, and joyful Trainable — Highly trainable, but can become bored if not mentally stimulated Activity — Very active needs around one hour of activity every day Best For — Families and people with active lifestyles and time to interact with them What Is An Australian Doodle? In fact, there are more differences between an Australian labradoodle and a labradoodle than it meets the eye. The Australian labradoodle, also known as Australian doodle, or Aussie labradoodle was developed by crossing Labrador retriever, Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel dog breeds. This means that breeders now develop Australian labradoodle puppies by breeding two Aussie labradoodle dogs. Australian Labradoodle Appearance Unlike other mixed-breeds, the Aussie labradoodle has been carefully developed since the s with a special focus on temperament, coat quality, and soundness of the breed. This means that there are no surprises when it comes to the looks and temperament of this breed. In terms of general appearance, expect your doodle to look like an adorable plush teddy bear with big and round expressive eyes. Most Aussie labradoodles are between 14 and 24 inches tall and weigh between 15 and 65 pounds. Medium: Between 17 and 20 inches tall and weighing from 30 to 45 pounds. Ideally, females should be 17 to 19 inches tall, and male dogs should be between 18 and 20 inches high. Standard: Between 21 and 24 inches tall at the shoulders and should weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Color These gorgeous dogs can come in a variety of different coat colors and patterns. Depending on their genetic makeup, Australian labradoodles can come in several shades of brown, ranging from an almost-white caramel ice to deep chocolate brown. The most commonly seen patterns in this breed are parti-colored, tuxedo, sable, and phantom, but solid-colored pups are also common. Coat Aussie labradoodles can have two coat types — either a fleece textured or wool textured coat. The fleece-textured coat is very soft and can either be straight, wavy, or have spiraling curls. As you can imagine, a wool-textured coat feels like wool and is usually curly. Aussie Labradoodle Character Aussie labradoodles are very intelligent, people-oriented, loving, and joyful canines. They can also be very comical to have around and are known to entertain their owners with silly antics. Lively and friendly, this breed gets along well with children and can be a great family pet and companion. In fact, when carefully bred for temperament, Australian labradoodles are one of the best service dog breeds thanks to their intuitive, clever, and outgoing nature. This breed inherited the high intelligence of a poodle, meaning they are quick to learn new commands and tricks and are highly trainable. Otherwise, your Aussie labradoodle will soon become bored and might try to have some fun by chewing your shoes or furniture. People-loving and energetic, this breed loves to spend time with its family and will happily play or cuddle with you for hours on end. They crave companionship and are the happiest when surrounded by their human families. Activity Level This energetic, fun, and agile dog is best suited for active people or families that spend most of their time outdoors. While not as energetic as Shepradors or some other Lab mixes, this breed likes to stay active and needs regular exercise. Ideally, you should walk your dog at least twice a day, and if possible, take them hiking or swimming every now and then. Besides taking them for daily walks, you will also need to play with your dog and find ways to keep them entertained and mentally stimulated. Caring For An Australian Labradoodle Although a fairly low-maintenance breed, the Australian doodle still needs proper care and attention to stay happy and thrive. Like with any other dog, caring for an Aussie labradoodle will require a bit of time and effort on your part. Here are a few things you should pay attention to! Exercise Being related to both the poodle and Labrador retriever dog breeds, Australian labradoodles are naturally active dogs. Ideally, your Aussie labradoodle will need around one hour of exercise every day. Two longer walks or several shorter walks will give your dog a chance to relieve themselves and burn some excess energy. However, your dog will be extremely pleased if you also add at least 30 minutes of play to your daily routine. And thanks to both poodle and Lab roots, Australian labradoodles are excellent swimmers and will take to playing in the water in no time. Intellectual Stimulation Aussie labradoodles are highly intelligent but they also can get bored quite easily. Without mental stimulation, even the best-behaved Australian doodle will become destructive and find ways to get into trouble. Durable chew toys , puzzles, and tug toys will challenge your pup intellectually and keep their mind occupied in a fun and engaging way. While many dogs might decide to act out or become destructive, most Australian labradoodles develop depression or separation anxiety when left alone at home a lot. The great thing about this breed is that its single coat is non-shedding or low shedding, and as such, they are fairly easy to groom and maintain. Also, using doggy eye wipes can help clean the area around the eyes and remove bacteria-laden eye discharge. The best dog food for Aussie labradoodles is high in protein and has moderate levels of fat and carbs. Known Health Problems While considered generally healthy, the Aussie labradoodle has the potential to develop certain health conditions. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia — These conditions are commonly seen in large and medium-sized dogs and are caused by malformation of the hip and elbow joints. Life Expectancy Australian labradoodles have an average life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Australian labradoodles were bred to serve as guide dogs, and they are highly intelligent and eager to please. These traits make them easy to train and they are quick to learn new commands and tricks. Start obedience training and socialization when your puppy is eight weeks old to help them grow into a well-behaved and friendly dog. Use positive, reward-based training to teach your dog basic commands and obedience. So, keep the training positive and avoid using harsh corrections and punishment. They also need to be mentally stimulated throughout the day and will need someone to play with. Buying Australian Labradoodle Puppies If you are looking to purchase an Australian labradoodle puppy, find a reputable breeder and schedule an appointment to meet the puppies and both parents. Check your local shelter or rescue organizations to see if they have any Australian labradoodles available for adoption and be prepared to spend some time getting to know your dog. The popularity of the Doodle breeds has possibly led to overbreeding and therefore less than desirable dogs being bred. Be vigilant when choosing a Doodle breeder. History Of The Breeds Labrador Retriever The Labrador retriever is a medium- to large-size working dog that was originally used to retrieve fish and later as a gun dog. Extremely friendly, easy to train, and kind, the Lab is one of the most popular dog breeds and makes a great family companion and service dog. Highly intelligent, easy to train, and loving, the poodle is considered hypoallergenic and makes a great family companion. The Cocker is eager-to-please and a gentle family dog with a sweet temperament and affectionate nature. The main difference between an Australian labradoodle and a labradoodle is in their parents. Wool: A wool coat is curly, with a Poodle-like texture, has a cotton-like feel. These are usually non-shedding and can be a bit harder to maintain if kept long. Hair: A hair coat can be either straight or have a slight wave and is comparable to a lower generation ie F1 Labradoodle. These have are typically easy to maintain and have higher chance of shedding, but will vary by puppy. Multigenerational Australian Labradoodles that have been intentionally bred for several generations are typically non-shedding or very low-shedding. However, it is important to note that some breeders we do occasionally will do infusion litters with one of the parent breeds ie the Lab or Cocker Spaniel. These infusion litters may produce some puppies that are low to moderate shedding depending on their genetics. Australian Labradoodles can come in very wide variety of colors and patterns! Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Due to their high energy levels and complex needs, the Australian Labradoodle may not be the best fit for novice dog owners. Previous experience with other highly intelligent breeds, such as the Border Collie , can be advantageous since dealing with their occasional stubbornness can be challenging. Adequate mental and physical stimulation is vital for this breed, as without it, they may become bored and frustrated despite the love showered upon them. Separation anxiety can be a concern with the Australian Labradoodle. A minimum of 50 minutes of daily walks is recommended, with even more exercise being ideal. Overall, the Australian Labradoodle is a wonderful breed of dog that is perfect for families with children or active adults. They are loving, intelligent, and easy to care for. If you are looking for a new furry friend, the Australian Labradoodle is a great option to consider. Australian Labradoodle History The Australian Labradoodle is a prime example of carefully planned crossbreeding, originating in Australia during the s. While Australian Labradoodle guide dogs have been successfully trained and placed in Australia and Hawaii, achieving the non-shedding characteristic of the Standard Poodle has not yet become a fixed trait. However, Australians took it a step further, considering it not just a Labrador x Poodle cross, but a distinct breed that was developed over many years with specific goals in mind. To achieve these goals, further development involved infusing parent breeds into the existing Labrador x Poodle lines. The breed developers sought to complement the Australian Labradoodle and cultivate the qualities they admired and cherished in these dogs. In , the first Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard was written, reflecting these aspirations. As of now, the Australian Labradoodle comprises six different breeds in its origin. Australian Labradoodle Size The Australian Labradoodle is a generously sized mixed breed with no fixed breed standard, resulting in a wide variety of coat colors due to the combination of their parent breeds. Their coats are typically thick, displaying a lovely blend of curls or waves, and their ears are characterized by floppy, curly hair. While the most common coat colors are solid yellow, tricolor, or merle, this crossbreed can exhibit an array of captivating color combinations. Australian Labradoodle Personality The Australian Labradoodle is known for its generally good-natured and affectionate demeanor towards familiar people, but they can sometimes be reserved or cautious around strangers. Early socialization is vital for all dogs, regardless of their typical temperament, as it helps prevent reactivity towards people or other dogs, ensuring they can enjoy various experiences, such as visiting dog-friendly establishments or playing at the dog park. Without proper exposure, this devoted breed may develop reactive behavior towards perceived threats. Consistent training from a young age is essential for enhancing their overall quality of life and yours as they grow into adulthood. Employing positive reinforcement training consistently and firmly is crucial, and if you notice harmful behaviors or limited progress, seeking assistance from a professional trainer as soon as possible is recommended. Australian Labradoodle Health When the Australian Labradoodle is bred by a responsible breeder, they often enjoy good health. Crossbreeding, including designer dog breeds like the Labradoodle, can reduce the risk of common ailments found in purebred dogs. Potential Health Issues include:. The intent was to create a breed that was allergy and asthma friendly with the temperament of a service dog. This journey was inspired by a vision-impaired woman in Hawaii who needed a Guide Dog which wouldn't aggravate her husband's allergies. Of the 31 Labradoodles bred at Royal Guide Dogs, a staggering 29 made it through as guide dogs, an accolade of unparalleled proportion for this "new breed" of guide dog. Breeding for Consistency To continue the efforts of Wally Conron, breeders in Australia began breeding Labradoodles and were determined to produce litters with consistent conformation, coat type, and temperament. During the 90's, a number of other dog breeds were bred into the Labradoodle lines to assist in this effort. Most often, the English Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel were the breeds used, however, it is reported that a few other dog breeds were also introduced into certain lines. DNA evidence of these dog breeds are still found in a few lines today, while others were bred out and not re-introduced into any other blood lines. The Labradoodle is a cross between two specific dogs, the Labrador Retriever and Poodle. Protecting Australian Labradoodle Lines Organizations have been formed to protect the continued development of the Australian Labradoodle lines, and guidelines for the continued introduction of English and American Cocker Spaniel are followed carefully. Infusion committees also discuss the merits of other possible dog breeds being allowed careful introduction into select lines. It is an exciting time to be involved in the development of this breed. Nina is very expressive! She's vocal, loves to cuddle and is always wagging her tail. It is unclear how far the Australians have come in their development. Some breeders are calling multi-generation Labradoodles Australian Labradoodles sometimes there are other breeds mixed in besides Lab and Poodle. Multi-generation Labradoodles are hybrids and are different than the ones being bred by the Australian clubs. Today in Australia they sometimes call them Cobberdogs. We use only the top quality Australian and American multigenerational lines in our breeding program. We take health testing seriously, and were among the first to test hips and elbows in many lines coming out of Australia. And we are absolutely thrilled with the outcome! Although we cannot foresee every problem that could present itself, we are doing all we can to minimize the chances of health problems in our doodles. We also offer a two-year health guarantee against genetic health issues to give you peace of mind. The foundation of our Australian Labradoodle breeding stock, Macey, was purchased in whelp from Tegan Park in Australia. She blessed us with gorgeous chocolate and cream labradoodle babies and has since retired. Two of her chocolate offspring, Kona and Bella, became the foundation of our breeding stock. Irish Water Spaniel. Australian Labradoodle Breeds These breeds are selectively mixed together to create a dog with a winning temperament. But also with a low-shedding coat. They are often described as teddy bear-like. And this certainly adds to their appeal! Fleece-textured coats are soft and either straight or wavy. They can also have spiral-shaped curls. Wool-textured coats feel—you guessed it! There are loads of different Australian Labradoodle colors! Some of the most popular include black, red, white, apricot, caramel and even parti patterns. Grooming Whether your Australian Labradoodle has a fleece- or wool-textured coat, they will need regular brushing. Usually around once a week. You might find it useful to enlist a professional groomer. When grooming, be sure to check your pup;s eyes and ears. Australian Labradoodle Temperament Australian Labradoodles are gentle, loyal, and sociable. They are not aggressive and are very good with children. Plus, they are intelligent and quick to learn. In fact, they are widely used as therapy and service dogs. Naturally playful, they enjoy time with their human families. But they should not be left alone or in crates for too long. Also, Australian Labradoodles are active dogs. They need a large amount of daily activity. At least minutes is ideal. And as a result, relatively easy to train. And puppies that are socialized early are less likely to display behavioral problems later on. Research shows that positive, rewards-based training is more effective than punishment-based training. In fact, punishments negatively affect behavior. This will help prevent weight problems. Some evidence suggests mixed-breed dogs experience fewer inherited disorders than their purebred counterparts. The limited gene pools of purebreds can cause a number of health-related issues. This is due to years of inbreeding. They may still inherit certain health conditions from either parent. An Australian Labradoodle is a great fit if you have children or other pets. They tend to be calmer than the standard Labradoodle. Early socialization and consistent rewards-based training will help your Australian Labradoodle become a great people-pleaser. But, if you work away from home for long hours, this pup may not be the best choice. Temperament: Friendly, gentle, and intelligent. Australian Labradoodle Appearance Since it is a hybrid the Australian Labradoodle does not have any breed standards. Regardless of size, this stocky but graceful pooch is often covered in a curly coat just like their Poodle parents. Due to its fur having the more hair-like qualities of a Poodle the Australian Labradoodle is a low-shedding dog. With soulful eyes and a dark button nose, many may mistake it as a large teddy bear if it was not for its constantly wagging tail! Height and Weight These pups come in a variety of sizes: Miniatures often stand around 14 to 16 inches tall, weighing 15 to 25 pounds. Mediums often stand 17 to 20 inches tall, weighing 30 to 45 pounds. Standards often stand 21 to 24 inches tall and weigh 50 to 65 pounds. For those living in apartments or smaller homes, a Miniature or Medium would be ideal. Colors and Coat Australian Labradoodles often come in several shades of brown, from the milkiest cream to the silkiest dark chocolate. However, you can also find them in colors such as apricot and lavender. Their coats often come in three types: Hair, Fleece, and Wool. Hair is the loosest among the coat types, with a texture resembling a shaggy Labrador. Fleece lies somewhere in the middle, being softer and silkier than Wool but wavier than the Hair variety. This texture will shed less than the Hair type and is easy to manage. Wool is the curliest of the coat types most resembling a Poodle. This texture sheds little to none and is considered the most allergy-friendly. This texture will require regular weekly brushing and professional grooming to avoid matting. Expect smooth sailing when it comes to training as all its parent breeds are famous for being eager to please. Almost all the breeds that make up the Australian Labradoodle are in the sporting group so expect your pup to be as active as its parent breeds. The Cocker Spaniel and the Labrador Retriever are both known for their friendliness, making this social pup the life of the party. Wally Conron bred the first Labradoodle after a visually impaired woman named Pat Blum contacted him. Australian Labradoodle Personality and Temperament This hybrid is known for having the friendliness of a Labrador, the gentleness of an American Cocker Spaniel, the merriness of an English Cocker Spaniel, and the intelligence of a Poodle. Because of these qualities, they are the perfect family pet — energetic enough for the kids to play with and entertaining to watch in action. Due to their high intelligence, you will have fun finding creative ways to stimulate their minds. A fun family activity can be training them a variety of tricks or creating puzzle games for your furry little Einstein to solve. With proper training and socialization, they should be able to get along with all animals and humans. They are moderately active thanks to their parent breeds. Whether you are an on-the-go family or a sporty pet parent, this pooch should be able to keep up with you on all your hikes and runs. However, it will happily cuddle on the couch with you after a long day. Noise-wise, this dog is not known for being yappy. This dog can be a lot to handle for first-time owners and can get bored without enough mental and physical stimulation. However smaller Australian Labradoodles can thrive in an apartment or condo if given the right amount of exercise and entertainment. If you can put in the time to train and exercise you will be rewarded with a friend for a lifetime. Caring for an Australian Labradoodle Caring for an Australian Labradoodle requires a fair amount of time and effort due to their high intelligence and reasonable activity level. An active family or pet parent with time to dedicate to their physical and mental stimulation is best suited for this mix. As well as basic hygiene their unique coat requires professional grooming. Depending on their coat texture this may vary, but they will need regular appointments to a groomer to trim their coat and regular brushing to avoid mats. Grooming and adequate mental stimulation are very important and lead to a happy and healthy pup. Exercise Requirements With a lineage of active breeds, the Australian Labradoodle requires a reasonable amount of exercise. A minimum minute long walk would be enough for an adult, but several shorter walks throughout the day can also work. However, your pooch would not complain if you also added 30 minutes of off-leash play. They will enjoy the basic doggie games of fetch and tug-of-war, but feel free to be creative with this lively breed. With its Labrador roots, try taking fetch to the next level by teaching them to fetch in the water. The added activity of swimming back and forth will require more energy than your average park playdate. Taking your pup hiking can help with mental stimulation as your pup is introduced to new sights and smells. Agility training can also be a great option for those with backyards. All in all, a happy dog is a tired dog, and making sure to properly exercise your furry friend can prevent boredom and destructive behavior. Number of Walks Per Day: .Total Exercise Needed Per Day: minutes. Grooming and Shedding For an Australian Labradoodle, grooming can look different depending on the coat type they have. Hair-type coats will need weekly brushing to prevent odor and tangles. As this coat type sheds on its own it is likely that your dog will need fewer visits to the groomer. Fleece-type coats will need longer and more thorough weekly brushing sessions. Your furry friend will need a weekly bath and an appointment with a professional groomer every weeks. Wool-type coats are most manageable when kept short, with weekly brushing and grooming appointments every month to keep your pooch looking smart. In addition to the above, cleaning their ears once a month will help prevent infection. Using eye wipes can keep bacteria-filled gunk away but be sure to look for a brand that does not contain irritants. However, a good rule of thumb when choosing kibble is to avoid a brand that overuses byproducts and fillers. A good kibble brand will be complete and balanced with the necessary nutrients your dog needs to be healthy. You should consider grain-free as research has found this could be better for your pup. When calculating the number of calories your dog will need, consider energy level and weight. A general rule is to add calories for every pound your dog weighs. Of course, getting the advice of your vet is always key if you are ever unsure. Hip Dysplasia: Usual with most medium to large dogs where the hip joint becomes unstable and causes bone spurs and limping. The good news is that buying from a reputable breeder can decrease the likelihood of your dog inheriting these diseases. Having pet insurance could save you the headache of going to the vets.

english bulldog puppies in rhode island - OH MY!!! GRRAND was contacted by a shelter that feared bringing Athena and her pups into their shelter, because they were going to have to euthanize them all upon intake due of lack of space!! It took a village, but they are all safe, bathed and in foster homes! They all apparently lived in a barn stall, never leaving it, and standing on a ton of feces, which they were covered in when they arrived. Some of the pups are terrified, having lived in the barn stall, with no socialization, all their lives and are going to need families with a lot of patience! Kane known as Charles and Penelope are in the same foster home and here is what she has to say about them: "They are definitely more settled in now and some personality is starting to slowly show. Getting used to people is completely new for them and it shows, as you know. However, they both get excited, happy and eager when any of my dogs come around. Miss P or Charles have no issues with appetite, wrestling with each other, tolerate baths and the more exposure to odd things they have, I think they will turn into a very sweet and great dogs. Be in the lookout for the famous side eye he throws! He loves belly rubs and takes better to being held than his sister. Interested applicants should expect these puppies to be big, and you should be prepared for that sweet and independent Great Pyrenees personality… to know the Great Pyr breed is to love them, but they are not Goldens, and we suggest you do some research on this beautiful breed before applying! These puppies all will need a secure above ground fenced yard as Great Pyrs love to be in their yard to protect and patrol, and this happens best when they are in a secure space! GRRAND policies stipulate a few important things that may stop you from applying, and here are 2 big ones- A: GRRAND will NOT place a puppy under the age of 6 months with families with children under 6 yrs old B: Any applicant with children under the age of 16, will require a home with direct access to a securely fenced yard… meaning direct access to the yard from the home… so this means no apartments or condos. As with all puppies, they will need a home where someone is home most of the time as they need to be fed regularly, and let to go outside consistently and constantly ALL DAY LONG so potty training can be a breeze. They will be looking for a home with a fenced in yard and a family with LOTS of time and patience to socialize and work with a puppy so they can grow up to be good pups! It is a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work, and if you don't have the time, an active and non-stop playful puppy may not be for you! Families must understand there needs to be constant supervision as children of all ages need to learn to respect an animal and puppies, and need to be taught boundaries. We are excited these pups will finally get to know what a nice soft bed, in a warm and cozy home with a loving family is all about! Andy's foster - to - adopt success story written by his forever family: "Early in , we started the process to find our Golden Retriever girl a companion and adopt a rescue dog in need of a good home. We submitted an application to FRR and subsequently had a virtual home visit. We were impressed by the thoroughness of both, as it gave us confidence that FFR clearly had the best interest of their animals in mind. While the timing was less than ideal due to some upcoming summer plans, we agreed to foster one of the pups for as long as three weeks. Two days later, a tiny black male pup with a spotted white chest was delivered to our home. He looked like he is wearing a tuxedo. He came with the name, Andy. He was a world-class cuddler who immediately began to work his way into our hearts. Our golden retriever soon welcomed him into our home as well. Within a couple of weeks, it became apparent that this foster puppy was going to be adopted as a member of our family. It also became apparent that Andy was the perfect name for him. It just fit, not only in his cute appearance but also in his behavior and antics. Andy was one of a number of puppies that we have brought into our home over the years, and we have always been sticklers about health, wellness and neutering. So, it was great to see that FFR also insisted on this same level of care and attention. Andy is now 6 months old. He has adapted well to our home and lifestyle. He has even traveled with us to our Idaho home for three months. He is still all puppy: filled with the energy, entertaining antics, and occasional mischief that make puppies fun. He and our golden retriever are now fast friends, so our efforts to find her a companion have been richly rewarded. He has a desire to please, and he has learned basic commands and to walk well on leash and to heel faster than any dog we have had. Foster-to-adopt worked really well for our family. Thanks to FFR and all their dedicated staff for helping us bring Andy into our home. Click here for more information. Walk for the Dogs with ResQWalk! The peak of Atlantic hurricane season is here which is why it's important to take some time to reflect on disaster preparedness. As unlikely as it may seem, a disaster can strike at any moment. Whether it's a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood, or blizzard, it's critical to be prepared and have a plan in place. Unfortunately, pets are sometimes unintentionally left out of their owners' disaster preparedness plans which makes it difficult to know what to do with them during an emergency. Luckily, you can plan ahead for your pets using these tips: Listen to your veterinarian Make sure your pet wears a collar with up to date information on it, get them microchipped, and have them vaccinated. These recommendations will come in handy during a disaster and help you avoid any potential pitfalls, such as being unable to get into a shelter with an unvaccinated pet or losing them during an evacuation. If possible, take your pet's medical records with you and attach their rabies tag to their collar. Find out which shelters allow pets Do some research into where you can safely evacuate with your pet during a state of emergency before a disaster occurs. Your local police department can typically give you this information. If not, they'll likely be able to point you in the direction of someone who can. Though unfortunate, it is not true that hotels must accept pets during evacuations, so please keep that in mind while planning ahead. Prepare a pet disaster kit In a suitcase or other easily movable storage container, pack food and water bowls, a manual can opener, two weeks' worth of canned food and bottled water per pet, plastic poop bags for dogs , litter and a small litter box for cats , and two weeks' worth of any medications your pet may need. You should also pack cleaning items, sturdy leashes and harnesses, toys, and a copy of your pet's medical records. For small animals and cats, have a carrier ready. Use this checklist to prepare. Create handouts Create an identification handout and a boarding instruction handout. Have both ready to go at a moment's notice. They should contain important information, such as your pet's name, age, sex, markings, microchip number, allergies, and vaccination status. If you get separated from your pet, make sure you're safe before you begin your search. If you're in a shelter that houses pets, inform a caretaker and provide them with the identification handout. Once you've been given the OK to leave the shelter and return home, contact animal control and call the microchip company to make sure all information about you and your pet is current. Stay safe out there! Some dogs become comfort or therapy dogs, while others are champion security systems. Dudley's adopters, however, found he is quit the poet!! To make a very long story short, she went on to become the saving grace of my life and a certified therapy dog who was with me for 13 years. After she crossed over that rainbow bridge, I did a lot of research with adoption agencies and came across SGRR. After filling out the application and being interviewed I was offered a dog by the name of Daisy, a beautiful red Golden Retriever. I thought I would never feel about another dog the way I felt about my Julie but it was not long before I fell in love with that sweet, sweet girl who was also with me for 13 years. Everyone loved Daisy, she would go up to people and do that lean into thing, a Golden thing, and they would just laugh and pet her. That is when I realized what an amazing organization, so full of caring and wonderful people who often go above and beyond for these wonderful animals. When my Daisy girl crossed over after a few months went by I thought it time to bring another friend home. Golden Retrievers had become hard to find so I decided to take a mixed breed home which was a big deal for me being the Golden Retriever lover that I am. I never had a male or a mixed breed before so I did not know what to expect. Finnie settled right in and is a wonderful companion and friend to furry sibling Gracie. Finnie took some training but I knew in time he would be a great dog and he is a great dog. He is very different than the other dogs in my life but he is so much fun to have with us. He loves people and gets very excited with everyone and will jump up in the air like an acrobat we are working on that , but a great dog. I would encourage everyone to think about a mixed breed. With time, love and patience you get a great dog and companion. We are excited and proud to share it with all of you. Click the button below and enjoy!
