Your Bully Pit will respond very quickly because they love pleasing their owners. This is likely a breath of fresh air after learning all the other high-maintenance aspects of this dog. At most, you should only need a damp washcloth to wipe down the dog whenever it gets dirty during play. Never give a Bully Pit a bath more than once a month unless it gets skunked or some other similar situation. Bulldogs can have some serious icky eyes, and that can be passed on to Bully Pits. Your Bully Pit may fight both grooming needs at first, but they cannot be ignored. Be gentle and allow your dog to smell both the clippers and toothbrush before touching their body with it. Bulldogs have several inheritable illnesses that Bully Pits are likely to take on. Luckily, Pitbulls are relatively healthy, causing Bully Pits to be more healthy than standard Bulldogs. If your Bully Pit favors the Bulldog parent, you should expect it to need more medical attention than a Bully Pit that favors its Pitbull parent. For Bully Pits that favor the Bulldog, it may have breathing issues and heart disease. You might also want to pay attention to its snout skin to make sure it is not infected. In contrast, Bully Pits that favor the Pitbull are more likely to have skin problems and allergies. No matter which dog your Bully Pit favors, hip dysplasia can be a serious issue. Hip dysplasia is an issue for both Pitbulls and Bulldogs. So, it is highly likely for a Bully Pit to experience this in their life. Minor Conditions. Cons: The English Bulldog is a breed that originated in England in the 16th century. It was originally bred for bull baiting, a popular form of entertainment in which a bull was tethered to a post, and a dog was released to attack it. English Bulldogs were known for their strength, courage, and tenacity, and they were prized for these qualities in the bull-baiting ring. It was originally bred for pit fighting, a blood sport that involved two dogs being placed in a pit to fight each other. American Pitbull Terriers were known for their athleticism, strength, and courage, and they were prized for these qualities in the pit fighting ring. However, when pit fighting was banned in the United States, the breed was used for other purposes, such as hunting, guarding, and as a companion animal. It needs to be clarified when the English Bulldog Pitbull Mix was first developed. Still, the breed was likely created in the 20th or 21st century due to the increasing popularity of hybrid species. The Bullpit is not a recognized breed by any major kennel club and is not eligible to participate in conformation shows or other AKC-sanctioned events. Generally, these are medium to large-sized dogs with a stocky build and a muscular appearance. They may have the short, wide head and facial wrinkles of an English Bulldog and the short, smooth coat of an American Pitbull Terrier. Their ears may be short and folded, or they may be long and floppy, depending on the traits inherited from their parents. Their tail may be short and stumpy or long and tapered, depending on the traits inherited from their parents. They may also inherit more physical characteristics from one parent breed than the other. English Bulldog Mixed Pitbulls can be any color, including black, white, brindle, fawn, red, and more. They may have a solid coat color or a combination of colors. Their coat may be short, smooth, and shiny, or they may be longer and coarser, depending on the traits inherited from their parents. They may also have a variety of markings, such as spots, patches, or a mask. Males are typically larger than females and may weigh up to 70 pounds when fully grown. Conversely, females are usually smaller and may weigh between 30 and 50 pounds when fully grown. It is important to note that the size of an English Bulldog Mixed Pit Bull can also be influenced by factors such as diet, exercise, and genetics. It is also important to remember that each dog is an individual and may have its unique size and weight. Overall, the appearance of an English Bulldog Pitbull Mix can vary greatly, and it is difficult to predict exactly what a Bullpit will look like based on its parent breeds. It is important to remember that each dog is an individual and may have unique physical characteristics. However, some general characteristics may be common in these dogs due to the traits of their parent breeds. English Bulldogs are generally known for being calm, gentle, and affectionate. They are often good with children and can make good family pets. However, they can also be stubborn and require extra patience during training. These traits may also be present in an English Bulldog Pitbull Mix. However, it is important to remember that each dog is an individual and may have different personality traits and characteristics. Pitbull Mix English Bulldogs are intelligent and energetic dogs that can be good family pets with the right training and socialization. They may be playful and affectionate with their families and may be good with children if raised with them. However, it is important to remember that these dogs, like all breeds, can be strong-willed and may require firm, consistent training and leadership to ensure that they are well-behaved and well-adjusted. It is important to do thorough research before considering any breed of dog, including a Pitbull Mix English Bulldog, as a pet. It is also important to choose a reputable breeder and to socialize and train your dog properly to ensure that it grows into a well-behaved and well-adjusted family member. Proper socialization and training can help prevent behavioral issues and ensure that your dog is a happy, well-adjusted family member. There are a few things to consider when deciding whether or not to breed an English Bulldog with a Pitbull. First and foremost, it is important to remember that breeding any two animals carries risks and responsibilities and should not be undertaken lightly. Before breeding any two animals, it is important to consider the potential health and temperament issues that may arise in the resulting offspring. Both English Bulldogs and Pitbulls are prone to certain genetic health conditions, and breeding two dogs that are carriers of the same congenital disease could result in offspring that are affected by the disease. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly research the health history of both parent breeds and choose the breeding stock free from known genetic health issues. In addition to considering the potential health risks, it is also important to consider the temperament and suitability of both parent breeds as family pets. For example, both English Bulldogs and Pitbulls have a reputation for being loyal and protective of their families, but they can also be strong-willed. As a result, they may require firm, consistent training and leadership to ensure they are well-behaved and well-adjusted. Therefore, it is important to research both parent breeds thoroughly and to consider their individual temperament and suitability as pets before deciding to breed them. Finally, it is important to remember that breeding any two animals carries a significant financial and time commitment. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider whether or not you are prepared to take on the responsibility of breeding and raising a litter of puppies before deciding to mate two animals. Overall, it is important to carefully consider the potential risks and responsibilities involved in breeding any two animals, including an English Bulldog and a Pitbull. Choosing a reputable breeder and thoroughly researching the health and temperament of both parent breeds is also important before deciding to breed them. Pitbull English Bulldog Mix Health and Lifespan Pitbull English Bulldog mixes can be prone to certain health problems due to the inherited traits of their parent breeds. Some health issues that English Bulldog Mixed Pitbulls may be prone to include: Hip dysplasia: This is a condition in which the hip joint is malformed, leading to pain and difficulty moving. It can be treated with medication, physical therapy, or surgery. Elbow dysplasia: This is a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. It can also be treated with medication, physical therapy, or surgery. Breathing problems: Both English Bulldogs and Pitbulls can be prone to respiratory issues due to their short snouts and narrow nostrils. This can make it difficult for them to breathe, especially in hot or humid conditions. Allergies: English Bulldog Mixed Pitbulls may be prone to allergies, which can cause skin irritation, itching, and other symptoms. Eye problems: Both English Bulldogs and Pitbulls can be prone to eye problems such as cataracts, cherry eye, and dry eye. Skin problems: English Bulldog Mixed Pitbulls may be prone to skin problems such as allergies, infections, and hot spots. English Bulldog Mixed Pitbulls generally have a lifespan of around 10 to 12 years. By working with a veterinarian and taking good care of your dog, you can help to ensure that they live a long and healthy life. In general, all dogs need to eat a balanced and nutritious diet that meets their specific needs. Diet: Consult with your veterinarian or a professional pet nutritionist to determine the right type and amount of food for your English Bulldog Pitbull mix. Look for a brand that uses real meat or fish as the first ingredient, and avoid those that contain fillers or by-products. This can help prevent bloat, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can occur when a dog eats too much at once. Avoid giving your English Bulldog Pitbull mix table scraps or other unhealthy treats. These can contribute to weight gain and other health problems. Daily walks, runs, or play sessions can keep your dog healthy and happy. Be sure to give your Pitbull Mix English Bulldog plenty of opportunities to play and explore, as this can help to stimulate their mind and prevent boredom. Remember that these dogs may be prone to overheating, so avoiding exercising your dog in extreme heat or humidity is important. This includes obedience training and exposure to a variety of people, places, and situations. This helps ensure that your Pitbull Mix English Bulldog is well-behaved and able to adapt to different environments. Cleaning and Grooming English Bulldog Pitbull mixes will require regular grooming to maintain their coat and overall health. A slicker brush or a comb with wide teeth can be effective. Bath your dog every few months or as needed. Use a mild dog shampoo, and rinse thoroughly to prevent skin irritation. Use a cleaning solution that is specifically made for dogs, and be sure to dry the ears thoroughly after cleaning. Use toothpaste and a toothbrush that is specifically made for dogs. You can help keep your dog looking and feeling its best by providing regular care and attention. Here are some general tips for training an English Bulldog Pitbull Mix: Start training as soon as possible. Use positive reinforcement. This means rewarding your dog with treats, praise, or other rewards when they do something you want them to do. Avoid using punishment or physical force, as these can be harmful and ineffective. Be consistent. Use the same commands and rewards every time so your dog knows what to expect. Practice regularly. This will help to reinforce the behaviors you want your dog to learn. A trainer can provide guidance and support to help you and your English Bulldog Pitbull mix succeed. With time, patience, and consistency, you can help your dog learn the behaviors you want them to have. However, keep in mind that this is just an estimate, and prices can vary widely. For example, some breeders may charge more for English Bulldog Pitbull mixes from champion bloodlines or have certain desirable characteristics, while others may charge less. In addition to the initial purchase price, there are other costs to consider when buying an English Bulldog Pitbull mix puppy. This can help to ensure that they are healthy and to catch any potential health issues early on. Vet expenses may include the cost of the initial visit, vaccines, deworming, spaying or neutering, and other medical care. Training and socialization: Training and socializing your puppy is important for their overall health and well-being. This may involve hiring a professional trainer or enrolling in a training class. By budgeting for these costs and being a responsible pet owner, you can ensure that your pup has everything they need to thrive. However, there are some pros and cons to consider before getting any dog, and this is especially true for mixed breeds. Pros: Mixed breeds can sometimes have the best traits of both parent breeds. For example, English Bulldogs are known for being calm and gentle, while Pitbulls are known for being intelligent and energetic. An English Bulldog Pitbull mix could have a good balance of both traits. Mixed breeds may have a lower risk of inherited health problems. Purebred dogs can be prone to certain genetic conditions due to inbreeding, but mixed breeds may be less likely to develop these issues. Mixed breeds may be more adaptable to different living situations. Cons: It can take time to predict the exact traits that a mixed breed will have. Mixed breeds may be harder to find in shelters or rescue organizations. Many people looking to adopt a dog will search for specific purebreds, so that mixed breeds may be less common in these settings. Mixed breeds may be more prone to behavioral issues. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. All rare colors. For the complete list please see our German Shepherd Breeders page. When looking for a German Shepherd pup, there are a few things you should take into account before making your purchase. When purchasing a German Shepherd puppy, be prepared to make a long-term commitment to taking care of your new family member. They will require regular exercise, plenty of socialization, and training. With proper care, your GSD will be by your side for many years to come. Reputable breeders are more than happy to show you where the dog was born, raised, and even introduce you to its parents. As part of your purchase agreement with a breeder, make sure there is some sort of guarantees included on the health of the pup for up to 1 year after making your purchase. This warranty will ensure you can take your pup to the vet if any health problems do arise in the future. Visit Your New Jersey German Shepherd Breeder in Person Before handing over your money, you should be allowed to visit with the puppies and their parents. If everything looks good and the breeder is reputable, take the time to ask them as many questions as you can about the pup, its parents, and how it has been raised. This will help you get a sense of what to expect in the years ahead. A responsible German Shepherd breeder will be more than happy to answer any and all of your questions and provide additional information beyond what is covered in this article. They should make you feel confident that you are making the right decision in purchasing one of their puppies. Reputable breeders typically want to ensure their pups go home and stay home with the right family so may be hesitant about giving out too much information over the phone or the internet. References will also give you an idea of what you should expect if you decide to purchase a dog from your new breeder. By talking to them and seeing how they interact with their dog, it will give you an idea of what life is really like living with one of these loyal companions. Meeting with past customers will also help you get a sense of whether the breeder is reputable or not. If everything looks good, take the time to ask your breeder for specific contact information from these families so you can reach out to them on your own. This will give you an idea of what questions to ask and what to look for when meeting with potential dog owners. This means they should be taking them for yearly check-ups and vaccines, grooming them regularly, and feeding them high-quality dog food that meets all their nutritional needs. The best place to get your dog is from a breeder who has an established relationship with a veterinarian they use on a regular basis. A good professional will be able to answer any questions you have about taking care of your dog and what it takes to keep them healthy throughout its life. Look Out for The Signs of An Unethical German Shepherd Dog Breeder in New Jersey Unfortunately, not all breeders are ethical and some may try to take advantage of your lack of knowledge or willingness to ask the right questions. There are plenty of them out there, you just need to be patient and do your research. This can include anything from congenital defects to health issues that may arise as the dog gets older. This will prevent them from getting out and exploring on their own. A Word on Crate Training You may want to consider crate training as your German Shepherd pup gets older as it can be a very effective tool for potty training and teaching them their boundaries. However, if not used properly, this method could actually cause more harm than good. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Now that you know some of the best German Shepherd breeders in New Jersey, you must be wondering how much you will need to pay for a good puppy from a reputable breeder. The price of the German Shepherd Puppy can vary depending on several factors, including the breeder, the location, lineage, and their purpose in life. If you are getting a dog from a high-end breeder with a prestigious line of German Shepherds, you will of course need to pay a much higher price. As this dog breed is extremely intelligent and useful in many disciplines of working life, they are not usually purchased as pets, so you will have to expect to pay a little bit more, as their price increases because of this. Also, the price of a puppy will significantly rise if the breeder has done all the health tests and has each certificate to prove this. These dogs are less likely to suffer from any health conditions later in life, and are therefore, much more expensive. On the other hand, if you are looking to buy a service or police dog, then you can expect to pay a lot. Even though they can be really pricey, these dogs are worth it, believe me — their intelligence, capabilities, great temperament, and companionship make up for the money invested. We have done this research and compiled all this important information in order to help you choose a perfect breeder that will provide you with the best possible puppy. We hate to see our readers regret their decision of getting a puppy, just because they ran into a breeder that does not care about his dogs and clients. A true lover of dogs will never let their pups end up with just anyone, but will make sure that the potential buyer actually loves owning dogs and has the appropriate conditions for raising such a dog. On the other hand, a reputable breeder will also make sure that all his puppy parents are in perfect health, so the future puppies will also be healthy and happy. These are just some of the things you need to be careful of when looking for a German Shepherd breeder. Once you have that little fur pup with you at home, I am sure that you will forget all the stress and time spent in the process of searching for the right one, and he or she will bring light and happiness into your life. You may have read at length about puppy mill breeder dogs or just learned now about this travesty of the dog world. Puppy mill breeder dogs are adult dogs of all breeds who have lived their entire lives often up to seven years or more being repeatedly bred by commercial breeders whose sole motivation is to turn an easy dollar. The resulting puppies are typically sold to pet stores or via disreputable Internet sites to an unsuspecting public while the adults remain in the puppy mill to reproduce again. Adopting a Puppy Mill Survivor These commercial breeders have no interest in making sure the puppies are healthy, well-balanced representatives of the breed and no concern for the physical or emotional health of the parents. They view dogs as crop animals, not as family pets, and typically house them in squalid, appalling conditions. Here, we help prepare and transition Golden Retriever puppy mill survivors for life in an adoptive home. Many of our prospective adopters tell us they had no idea what a puppy mill dog would really be like until they met one in person. We are also happy to talk with you in more depth or answer additional questions at any time. The first thing to understand about puppy mill survivors is that they have lived very different lives compared to most other dogs. They have been kept either in small cages isolated from people and other animals or housed with multiple dogs in cramped areas, forced to stand or lie in their own filth. They have been poorly socialized, meaning that that they have had little to no human contact and have not been exposed to everyday sights and sounds. Any contact they have had with humans is likely to have been negative, so they do not trust humans or know how to form a healthy relationship with them. Some have been handled cruelly or had other traumatic experiences. Amazingly, even with this type of background, puppy mill dogs can and will recover, once rescued and rehabilitated. Their resilience can be awe-inspiring. Understandably, you may well ask if some dogs are too fearful or traumatized to ever lead normal lives. Those that have been most severely neglected or have suffered traumatic experiences may certainly take longer to rehabilitate. That said, living with a puppy mill breeder dog is a life-long commitment and adopters should expect to encounter different challenges along the way. While each dog is of course unique, there are some characteristics that many have in common. Here are some of the key factors an adoptive home should have in order to help a puppy mill dog succeed: a calm, quiet environment with minimal noise and commotion a secure fenced yard with a physical i. If your existing dog is confident, active, and affectionate with your family, it will help teach your puppy mill dog to act this way as well patience and understanding — not expecting more than the dog can handle or getting overly frustrated an openness to set-backs and an ability to use creative techniques to move forward a sense of humor also helps tremendously! Because these dogs are often very fearful, not only of people and their actions but also of startling noises, they have a high tendency to bolt. Should a puppy mill dog escape from your yard or other area, getting them to come back is extraordinarily difficult. They will not come willingly to a person, even if coaxed with food or other items that would tempt a normal dog. A fence also helps puppy mill dogs to feel secure and safe in their surroundings. Since these dogs are typically submissive in nature to humans, they are more sensitive to pain and do not recover quickly from experiences a confident dog could handle. This is why an invisible or electronic fence is not a viable option for a fearful dog. Children should, of course, always be supervised around any dog, but especially around a fearful dog. Lowering of the head, a sideways glance, closed mouth — these are all signs your dog may be uncomfortable. To help minimize stress, a child should allow the dog to approach him, rather than the other way around. When the dog approaches, the child should be quiet, gentle, and calm, and should not lean over the dog. An adult should always be present to protect the dog from becoming overwhelmed. In general, adoptive homes made up of adults or older children are the best scenario for a breeder dog. Friends and family members should take the same approach as children to your fearful dog. The adopter should be present so the dog has someone she knows and is comfortable with around her. Have your friends and family members sit with tasty treats and allow your dog to approach them. Let the dog sniff the newcomers and have them hand the dog a treat before attempting to pet. All visitors should act calm and gentle and not make any sudden or startling movements that may frighten the dog. Should you adopt a puppy mill breeder dog, it will be important that you are able to manage the environment so that visitors and new experiences are kept to a minimum, at least until your dog has progressed to a higher comfort level. This is a question we are asked often, and is certainly an important one for potential adopters to take into consideration. Each dog is different, of course, and while the percentage of puppy mill dogs with housebreaking issues is certainly higher than that of the general dog population, most acclimate very well in this regard after adoption. Some do need a longer time to understand appropriate potty routines due to their background. Remember that most puppy mill breeder dogs have lived in cages or outside pens their entire lives and have had to use their personal area as a bathroom without anyone to clean up after them. Now they must adapt to a new routine, and this can take time and patience. Another dog in the house will certainly help teach the puppy mill dog that going outside is where we potty. Using baby gates while you are not home is a good way to keep the dog out of a carpeted area, while still allowing space to move around. Most dogs, when these techniques are implemented, become housetrained in about a month, according to our adopters. Yes, you can and you should! However, walking on leash can be challenging for many fearful dogs. Walking jointly with a confident dog is a great help, as it gives the puppy mill dog a friend to stick with and follow. Take treats on your walk to reward your dog when she performs well. We highly recommend the use of a front-attaching harness to keep the dog secure. We suggest a patient groomer who has knowledge of fearful dogs and will use slow, gentle techniques — any rough handling will create a negative experience for your dog. The ideal situation would be a mobile groomer or one that will allow you to stay during the appointment to serve as a secure presence for your dog. We have been working extensively with puppy mill breeder dogs for over five years and our staff has developed strong skills in knowing how to start slowly with these dogs, gradually building more confidence and a higher comfort level with people. In , we went a step further and created an innovative program called Project Home Life, which is specifically designed to rehabilitate puppy mill breeder dogs and help them transition from life in a cage to life in a home. Volunteers work with the dogs on various activities according to their individual progress level to help build confidence. The dogs learn to approach people for treats and pets, plus how to respond to different sights and sounds around the house including TVs, doorbells, and furniture. Dogs also learn how to play with interactive dog toys. As a dog progresses, we work on obedience skills, walking on leash, and overcoming obstacles. This booklet helps our adopters continue working on some of the same activities their dog learned in Project Home Life so they can maintain continuity. An online support group is available where you can seek input and suggestions from other DVGRR adopters who have already brought a breeder dog home. We can provide information on finding reputable trainers and our staff is always available via phone or email for information, guidance, and support of any kind. After hearing about the unique challenges and issues involved with puppy mill breeder dogs, you may well be asking yourself if this is a journey you want to take. It is certainly not for everyone and if a fearful dog is not right for you, there are many other dogs that need wonderful homes. However, if you are drawn to the plight of the puppy mill breeder dogs and can respond to the challenges that may arise with adoption, please know that you will be providing a true second chance for a rescued dog. There is great reward and joy in watching a fearful dog wag her tail, bark for the first time, or learn to play with a toy. Yes, the progress takes place in baby steps, but if you have the patience, a positive attitude, and lots of love to share, you may just be what one of these special dogs needs. However, we also know that the training and conditioning we begin in the PHL program must continue after the dog is adopted. Both books provide a detailed look at living with and rehabilitating puppy mill dogs and other shy or fearful dogs and contain invaluable information and advice. This book features tried-and-true techniques to help your dog feel secure. Tracy Schuhmacher Democrat and Chronicle Show Caption Hide Caption Rescued puppy mill dog loses leg to gain new life Hope, a golden retriever rescued from a puppy mill in Ohio, is being nursed back to health before being put up for adoption by New 2 U Rescues, a Rochester dog rescue organization. While living in a puppy mill, the two-year-old golden retriever had developed an infection that was left to fester. A veterinarian had amputated the leg to save the dog's life. The dog was recovering from surgery and needed immediate care; they traveled to bring her home. On the New2U Facebook page , they ask for suggestions for a name. Hope instead cowered in a quiet corner; she didn't even lie in the cozy dog bed that the Zwitzers had set out for her. While some puppy mill dogs are inquisitive shortly after arriving, Hope would take longer because of the trauma and pain she had endured. According to The Puppy Mill Project , a Chicago-based advocacy group, there are more than 2 million puppies bred in mills each year. The dogs are raised in cages, required by law to be large enough only for the dog to stand up and turn around. When the dogs are no longer profitable — puppies who are too old to sell, females who are past breeding age, dogs who are sick — they are killed. Veterinarians in Ohio have convinced some puppy mills to surrender dogs instead of having them put down. Then rescue groups step in to take the dogs to better environments. The Zwitzers started rescuing dogs in the s and formed their own rescue two years ago. Hope joined the Zwitzers' two dogs — Chase, a golden retriever; and Merlin, an American Eskimo; as well as two other rescue dogs. Jackie, a sweet two-year-old black Lab mix, took an interest in Hope, taking her toys and trying to engage her in play. Hope has come a long way. She will lie contentedly between the Zwitzers in the living room. They will even spot her curled up on the dog bed now and then. The Zwitzers take Hope outside to help her build confidence on three legs — but there have been setbacks. Once, when the dogs were playing, they toppled a bird feeder, and Hope was under it. While Hope was not hurt, it startled her and made her resistant to venturing outdoors. While Hope has bounced back, she is reserved and is unlikely to develop the exuberant, friendly personality you'd expect of a golden retriever, Zwitzer said. Share via Email Eleanor, a golden retriever, spent most of her life in a horrific puppy mill where she was forced to breed puppies in deplorable conditions, living in a cramped cage with only six inches of clearance. The trauma she experienced left her anxious and unable to make eye contact, a heartbreaking reminder of the inhumane treatment she had endured. Despite her suffering, Eleanor never lost her maternal instincts for other dogs, and her story is a powerful reminder of the cruelty of puppy mills and the importance of rescuing animals from such places. Her new owner set up a small bathroom for her to feel safe, and it took a long time for her to become comfortable with the outside world and walk on a leash. Despite all of this, she never lost her maternal instincts for other dogs. Every day was a battle against the deep scars left by her cruel past. But it was a new experience for Eleanor to enjoy toys, and she became attached to a stuffed animal that she would collect and lay on, as if seeking comfort from the horrors of her past. Resilient Eleanor Inspires with Journey to Recovery As her personality blossomed, her owners saw her struggles and the indomitable spirit that refused to be broken. She now radiates joy and love, and her personality shines brighter each day. They know the horrors of puppy mills all too well and urge people to adopt rescue dogs instead. She even shielded a fellow furry friend during a thunderstorm, a gesture that moved her owners to tears. Related Articles. Golden Retriever for Adoption Brooke - Pending Adoption Brooke is an incredible 2-year-old puppy mill mom who was set free to start living life on January 20th. Brooke had a life her first two years as a puppy mill breeding dog. She was doing well settling into her foster home and was learning what it is like to be a real dog in a loving home. While she was in her foster home, she loved playing in the snow and she is doing great with the dogs in her foster home. Brooke found a dog bed she loved and she is thinking about crawling up onto the lap of her foster mom. Brooke is still timid with people, so needs another dog in the home in order to learn that people are good. Foster mom says Brooke is a very sweet and smart girl. She also loves kids, especially her 9 year old grandchild. A physical fence is safer with puppy mill girls as they are sensitive to corrections the invisible fence gives, and with correction, they can go through the fence. Brooke visited the vet to be spayed in early February and it was discovered she was pregnant with 5 puppies. Brooke delivered her puppies on March 7th and finally went into her foster-to-adopt home in on June 24th. We hope she will become adopted and have a wonderful life there with her new pal, Jetta the cat. If you are interested in adopting Brooke, please read "How To Adopt" and follow the directions from there if you qualify. Click the "next golden" button below to see the next golden retriever for adoption. Golden Angel Sponsors. While the intent may be good hearted and charitable, and the cause worthwhile, auctioning off a pet of any type or breed encourages impulse adoptions without thinking through the consequences or responsibilities for the adopting family. The result is typically a bad outcome for both the pet and the family an ignored animal, reluctance to provide basic vet care, inadequate exercise, etc. In many cases the pet comes from a disreputable breeder, in the dog world, also known as a puppy mill who advertises low cost animals but has raised the animals in extremely poor living conditions without regard to health or genetic dispositions. The only guarantee for the adopter is that if they get a sick or problem animal, they get a replacement animal, not a refund. Certificates of pedigree are frequently false. We screen the dogs, evaluate them medically, assure they get all shots and a vet checkup, and then try to match the best dog to qualified applicants by looking at whether the dog is good with children, good with other pets, etc. When NGRR hears of an auction involving Golden Retrievers, we contact the sponsor of the lottery and try to talk them out of it, citing many examples of bad outcomes. If after our pleading, they still insist on going ahead with it, we try to convince them to at least tell the winning ticket holder that we will take the dog with no questions asked, at any time. Why do I have to pay to rescue a dog? Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. We rescue Goldens of any age and in any medical condition from all over California and beyond. This results in significant veterinary bills each month. We recoup some of those costs through adoption fees. We exist on donations, and we must collect fees in order to offset some of our expenses. The adoption fee that you pay allows us to continue doing what we do; saving golden lives and finding wonderful new homes for them. What medical care does a Golden receive before becoming available for adoption? Each dog that comes into our program is given a basic vet exam. It is brought current on vaccinations rabies, DHPP and bordatella. If they are intact, they are spayed or neutered. They are also tested for heartworm. If they are given a clean bill of health, they are made available for adoption. We treat any medical issues which are identified. What is the process for adopting from Homeward Bound? The first step is to complete an adoption application. Once your application is received, it will be forwarded to a Placement volunteer in your area. Within a week or so, you should receive a call from the volunteer, who will ask you some questions and schedule a home visit virtually or by photos at this time. Once you have been approved to adopt, stay in touch with us about dogs on our website or newly available dogs by calling our office at and choose option 1. Our dogs are in great demand; many never make the website before they are adopted. Staying in touch signals that you are actively engaged in your search. If we believe we have a match, we will schedule an appointment with special precautions in place during this pandemic. Please note that most of our volunteers work full time, in addition to having family commitments. They do not get paid and they do this work out of love for the dogs. How do I meet available dogs? Once your application has been reviewed and your home visit successfully completed, stay in touch with us by calling our office at and choose option 1. To ensure the health and safety of all during the Coronavirus pandemic, we will call families to schedule appointments when we believe we have a match. Appointments will be spread out to limit the number of people on-site at any time. Masks will be required. Details will be provided when we schedule your appointment. What if I adopt a dog, and then decide it's not a good match for my family? Homeward Bound has made a lifetime commitment to each dog that comes into our program. If you adopt a dog, then decide it is not the right one for your household, it must come back to Homeward Bound. How does Homeward Bound acquire their Goldens? Our dogs come to us as surrenders from families that can no longer keep them or when someone has passed. Others are from shelters or have been found stray, undergoing a stray hold with all attempts made to find their owners. We are also involved in rescuing dogs from puppy mill situations and trusted international rescue partners. Do all of your dogs come from abusive environments? Only a few of the dogs we take in have obviously been the victim of physical abuse. Many however, have been the victims of neglect, usually in the form of improper diet, health related issues such as ear infections, inadequate food supply, and lack of grooming and flea control, lack of training, or puppy mill situations. It is amazing just how resilient these wonderful creatures are and how quickly they can bounce back with just a little TLC. OH MY!!! GRRAND was contacted by a shelter that feared bringing Athena and her pups into their shelter, because they were going to have to euthanize them all upon intake due of lack of space!! It took a village, but they are all safe, bathed and in foster homes! They all apparently lived in a barn stall, never leaving it, and standing on a ton of feces, which they were covered in when they arrived. Some of the pups are terrified, having lived in the barn stall, with no socialization, all their lives and are going to need families with a lot of patience! Kane known as Charles and Penelope are in the same foster home and here is what she has to say about them: "They are definitely more settled in now and some personality is starting to slowly show. Getting used to people is completely new for them and it shows, as you know. However, they both get excited, happy and eager when any of my dogs come around. Miss P or Charles have no issues with appetite, wrestling with each other, tolerate baths and the more exposure to odd things they have, I think they will turn into a very sweet and great dogs. Be in the lookout for the famous side eye he throws! He loves belly rubs and takes better to being held than his sister. Interested applicants should expect these puppies to be big, and you should be prepared for that sweet and independent Great Pyrenees personality… to know the Great Pyr breed is to love them, but they are not Goldens, and we suggest you do some research on this beautiful breed before applying! These puppies all will need a secure above ground fenced yard as Great Pyrs love to be in their yard to protect and patrol, and this happens best when they are in a secure space! GRRAND policies stipulate a few important things that may stop you from applying, and here are 2 big ones- A: GRRAND will NOT place a puppy under the age of 6 months with families with children under 6 yrs old B: Any applicant with children under the age of 16, will require a home with direct access to a securely fenced yard… meaning direct access to the yard from the home… so this means no apartments or condos. As with all puppies, they will need a home where someone is home most of the time as they need to be fed regularly, and let to go outside consistently and constantly ALL DAY LONG so potty training can be a breeze. They will be looking for a home with a fenced in yard and a family with LOTS of time and patience to socialize and work with a puppy so they can grow up to be good pups! It is a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work, and if you don't have the time, an active and non-stop playful puppy may not be for you! Families must understand there needs to be constant supervision as children of all ages need to learn to respect an animal and puppies, and need to be taught boundaries. We are excited these pups will finally get to know what a nice soft bed, in a warm and cozy home with a loving family is all about!

Puppies Breeds The link has been copied! Giving your puppy the best food out there is super important for their overall health and nutritional intake. Dogs at different stages of life for different breeds need different nutritional intake along the way. What would work for a Boston Terrier puppy may not always work for a Goldendoodle adult and vice versa. When it comes to choosing which option would be best for your Goldendoodle puppy, it is important to note the health concerns that are specific to the breed and the age. Unfortunately, some genetic health issues can present in Golden Doodle pups. Health conditions that come from the Poodle side: Hip Dysplasia: This genetic condition results from the hip socket not forming correctly and becoming dislocated in the end. Hypoadrenocorticism: This is a hormonal disease that results from the insufficient production of cortisol and aldosterone. Epilepsy: they can sometimes experience conditions like seizures, confusion, unresponsiveness, and breathing difficulty. Common symptoms you need to look out for include night vision difficulty, glassy eyes, and dilated pupils. Hypoglycemia: This is a condition that results from a sudden drop in sugar levels. It is most prevalent in the toy and miniature Poodle breeds within the first four months after birth. As a result, some Goldendoodle puppies do exhibit similar conditions after birth too. Then suddenly they will be back on all four legs as if nothing happened. Hip dysplasia is a complex condition where the hip joints of a growing puppy develop abnormally. The primary reason for this abnormal development is hip joint laxity ie the joint is too loose; leading to the two articulating parts of the joint of the pelvis — the femoral head and the acetabulum which form the ball-and-socket of the joint — moving abnormally relative to one another; the femoral head subluxation partly dislocating from the acetabulum. This leads to abnormal stresses and strains on the joint and leads to inflammation and degeneration of the joint tissues. Ultimately, permanent osteoarthritis develops in the joints. These changes produce pain and disability for the dog which may show up in a number of ways, such as lameness, abnormal gait movement , stiffness, reluctance to get up and move and difficulty in running and playing. Cancer: The cancer rates of Golden Retrievers are well documented. The risk peaks at ages 10 to .This condition, which is known to cause poor vision, can lead to blindness if not addressed quickly. Ear infections: Goldendoodles take those adorable long hair and cute long floppy ears from their retriever side. Skin conditions: No thanks to their longer outer coat and denser undercoat, retrievers are always susceptible to skin-related diseases such as atopic dermatitis. This disease causes itching at first, but due to the continual scratching and rubbing from the dog, it leads to further skin damage, other infections, irritation, and discomfort. Goldendoodles take the best of both breeds and often end up being more active and more playful than either of their parents would be, and that means they are also more maintenance. But that high maintenance is a small price to pay for a dog as amazing as a Goldendoodle. The size of a Goldendoodle can vary considerably depending on whether a Golden Retriever breeds with a miniature, medium-sized, or large poodle, but regardless of size, these high-energy pups are going to require the right nutrition to keep them happy and healthy. A doodle puppy has different needs than a senior Goldendoodle or adult Goldendoodle. It may surprise some to learn that many of these issues can be traced back to improper nutrition as a puppy. Some of these issues may not be entirely unavoidable, but there are some things that the right diet can help reduce. The proper high-protein diet with the right amount of calcium and phosphorus will ensure that your pup is getting what they need while perfectly balancing growth. The most common allergies in dogs, Goldendoodles included, are food allergies. If they have allergies, they have them, but you can not only reduce the chances with a good diet but help to ease symptoms by avoiding ingredients your puppy is allergic to. Common food allergies for a Goldendoodle can include wheat, corn, and soy. It is rare, but a Goldendoodle can also be allergic to animal protein, like beef, chicken, and pork. You can help reduce the chance of triggering food allergies by feeding your pup high-quality food with limited ingredients. Bloat is a condition that is more common in larger dog breeds, including standard-sized Goldendoodles. A high-quality food promotes good digestion, but bloat is also something you can control while they are puppies. Teach them to slow their eating and do not overfeed them. What To Look for in a Good Food For Your Goldendoodle Anyone with a new puppy understands all too well just how overwhelming it can be trying to find the right food. So, what should you look for when trying to find the right food for your Goldendoodle puppy? Protein is the most important nutrient that any dog needs. The larger the dog, the more essential the quality of that protein becomes. It is possible to get protein from plant-based ingredients, but these proteins are not as easy for your pup to absorb and use as meat-based proteins, like real chicken, are. Good puppy food will have one or more meats listed as the top ingredients. The ingredients listed first are the most prevalent in the food, so you want to make sure that meat like chicken, beef, pork, or fish is one of the first ones on the list. Avoid products with unnamed fats and look for ingredients that clearly state the fat source, such as chicken fat. Not only will they provide energy, but carbs also play a role in controlling blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates should not be a huge part of their diet. There is a big difference between the basic carbohydrates that many cheaper foods use and complex carbohydrates found in more expensive foods, and you must understand that difference to ensure you are providing your Goldendoodle puppy with what they need. While ingredients like corn, wheat, and soy will provide your puppy with carbs, they are carbs that will be quickly absorbed and used up, resulting in energy crashes between meals. Try to avoid the cheaper foods that use these ingredients as their source of carbohydrates. Instead, find food that provides your puppy with complex carbohydrates like oats, beans, or sweet potatoes. Your puppy will absorb these carbs more slowly throughout the day and will therefore have a more controlled supply of energy and better-balanced sugar levels. These ingredients are what separates food formulated for puppies and those made for adult dogs. Never free-feed your puppy. Free feeding means filing a bowl and letting your puppy have its way with the food as they please. Most, if not all, puppies have no control over when to stop. If left to their own devices, they will, without a doubt, overeat, which is a quick way to lead to obesity and health problems later in life. How much you feed your Goldendoodle changes considerably as they grow. It is important to spread feedings throughout the day to provide the right balance. Most Goldendoodle puppies are good with being fed 3 or 4 times a day. As they grow and become adults, feeding will most likely change to 1 or 2 times a day. Your puppy is going to be unique, and because it is, it will have unique tastes. Teaching them that grooming is a positive, relaxing experience will help the process go by more quickly and smoothly. Start grooming early If your dog is still a puppy, it might be a good idea to introduce him to the grooming process early on. This will help him get used to the sights, sounds, and smells of a groomer's salon, and he'll be more likely to cooperate when it's time for his actual haircut. We recommend sending your dog to a professional groomer for his haircut. This will ensure that your pup gets the best possible cut and that you don't accidentally cut him too short or leave any bald patches. Most groomers offer various services, so be sure to ask what they include in their price. Generally, a groomer will begin by bathing your dog and then trimming his nails, cleaning his ears, and starting to cut the hair according to your specifications. The process will continue with a blow-dry, and then your pup will be ready for his final trim. Poodles are known to have a lot of hair, so it can take a long time to groom them completely. You should expect the process to take up to two hours or more. You should consider many factors when choosing a groomer, including experience, pricing, and location. Talk about cuddly cuteness! Summer Cut Because poodles have a single coat, they can enjoy the luxury that comes with it: the summer cut. German Trim Looking for a haircut that looks fancy but not too fancy? The German trim uses the power of angles to give your poodle a sharp profile. The hair on your furry friend's legs is left long, while the hair on the body and ears is cut short. This is a great option not only if your poodle is more active but also if your pup is prone to ear infections or ear matting. Modern Cut The modern cut is an elegant hairstyle that combines aesthetics with your poodle's natural features. This cut keeps the hair on the body short, accentuating your poodle's shape. The fur on the head, ears, and tail is left longer to create a fluffy appearance. When your dog has such curly, coarse locks, you may wonder how many trips to the groomer you and your poodle may be making. Poodles and poodle-crosses also go through a coat change in the first year of life, so they need to be groomed more often," says Danna Alexander, owner of Prestige Dog Grooming School. To keep mats and tangles at bay, it's best to brush your poodle at least two to three times a week. Toy poodle haircuts aren't off limits for miniature and standard poodles, just as standard poodle haircuts aren't off limits for miniature and toy poodles. While any poodle can sport any style, there may be common options you'd like to choose from. At Hidden Pond Labradors, we understand that everybody has a different preference in mind when they set out to bring one of these incredible dogs into their home. Yellow Labrador Retriever Breeder The yellow Lab is one of the most popular colors, in part due to its photogenic nature. Like chocolate, the yellow coat is a recessive color that requires both parents to carry and pass on the gene. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. The goal was to combine these two highly popular breeds to create a dog that exhibits the best traits from both of them. A mixed dog breed can take after one parent breed more than the other or any combination of traits from the parent breeds. This can result in some variation among individual puppies. But, overall, a Golden Labrador is friendly, intelligent, energetic, and affectionate. Although this mixed breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and more. This large designer breed is characterized by their energetic personality and friendly disposition. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are open, friendly, and affectionate, so you can expect the same in your Golden Labrador puppy. They are very playful and get along fabulously with children, other dogs, and other pets. They may be alert enough to be a good watchdog, but they do not make good guard dogs. They are instinctually more interested in making new friends and getting attention than they are with anything else. They can have a slight prey drive, but most of the time, they are just curious and interested in playing and making friends. The Golden Labrador is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Their large size and energy tend to make them a better fit for larger homes with room to run. They can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given enough exercise and mental stimulation. But, small spaces can be a challenge because they are large dogs that are so playful and energetic. Golden Labradors do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they love their families, thrive on attention, and get bored easily, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. As a mixed breed, a Golden Labrador can inherit the potential health conditions of one or both of the parent breeds. Although the Golden Labrador is a relatively healthy dog breed, there are some potential health conditions to be aware of. These include eye problems like progressive retinal atrophy and joint issues common to large dogs like patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. Like their parent breeds, the Golden Labrador can be prone to weight gain, which does put them at risk of diabetes later in life. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to ensure genetic conditions are not being passed on to puppies. Regular vet visits, proper nutrition, and sufficient exercise can help keep your dog healthy and reduce preventable diseases. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are highly intelligent and highly trainable, so the Golden Labrador should be no different. Eager to please their owners, these dogs pick up on things quickly and respond best to positive training methods focused on praise and reward. This dog breed, like both of the parent breeds, is a great fit for owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. Their high energy can sometimes be a challenge, so you may want to consider puppy training and obedience classes. This designer dog breed may be called a Golden Labrador, but they can show up in many colors. A cream, yellow, or golden coat may be the most common, but a Golden Labrador can also have a black, red, or brown coat. It tends to be a dense double coat that is short or medium in length. This dog breed will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. During seasonal changes, you may want to increase to daily brushing. Not only will this make your dog more comfortable, but it will also decrease the amount of loose fur that ends up around your house. In addition to coat care, you will also need to handle nail, ear, and dental care for your Golden Labrador. Floppy ears tend to trap more dirt, moisture, and debris, which makes them more prone to developing ear infections than ears that stick straight up. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Beyond that, you can use vet-approved dental hygiene chews and treats and even a specially-formulated dental care diet to supplement your efforts. Getting them used to it early and keeping it a positive experience can make grooming a lot easier as your puppy grows into a big dog! Plus, it can become a bonding experience that your dog looks forward to. Golden Labradors are high-energy dogs. Daily walks, playtime, and some extra activity are generally enough for this dog to stay happy and healthy. But, they will probably tire out before you do! Their friendly nature makes the Golden Labrador a great fit for trips to the dog park. Try teaching your dog how to play frisbee. With their retriever background, it could become one of their favorite activities. You can also train your Golden Labrador for several dog sports like agility, dock diving, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Golden Labrador usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Golden Labrador generally lives years. Although Golden Labrador is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes referred to as a Goldador or a Goldador Retriever. Featured Golden Labrador Article. All of our lab puppies in Chicago and St. Louis for sale are loved unconditionally from the minute they are born up until the day they join their new families. As a responsible and reputable lab breeder in Illinois, we genetically health test all of our Labrador retrievers in St. Louis to ensure that we are only producing healthy Labrador puppies for sale. If you are looking to add a happy, healthy, well-loved, and well-cared-for lab puppy to your family, you have come to the right place! We operate quite a bit differently than the majority of other breeders. We hold a VERY high standard here in regards to health, conformation and temperament. We always have a goal in mind when we perform a breeding. Those breeders are not breeding to better the Labrador breed or produce quality, well-bred lab puppies, they are simply producing puppies to sell and make a profit from. We own mostly females here and we use outside males stud service to cover our females. This gives us a huge advantage when choosing the perfect male for a particular female. Each female will need something different in a mate and using one male will not be sufficient for every female if a breeder is true to themselves and is breeding for a purpose. For example, you have a chocolate female but she is lacking in something whether it be coat, bone, length of leg, too long of loin, carries her tail too high, eye color is too light, etc. She is going to need a specific male to help improve those imperfections. If you have one or even a couple of males on your property and none of them have what your female needs, you are not doing the breed any justice by mating two dogs together that do not compliment each other correctly. Breeding correctly and responsibly can be very complicated, stressful and very expensive. Another important thing to consider is health testing. Do you know the genetics of your female and your male? Is one or the other or maybe both of them carriers of a certain genetic disease? Will you be producing affected lab puppies by mating these two dogs together? Genetic testing is extremely important and necessary! We specialize in producing lab puppies from high quality show lines which are commonly known as the English Labrador Retrievers.
