With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Keep on reading to learn everything about French Bulldog puppies! French bulldogs All you need to know about Frenchies: a short summary History in a nutshell French Bulldogs were first bred as a smaller version of the English Bulldog in the 19th-century England. They were particularly popular among lacemakers in Nottinghamshire, who initially kept them to chase rats but soon fell in love with their small size and calm, friendly nature. After the Industrial Revolution, they had to move to southern France where lacemaking was still done by hand and took their dogs with them. Frenchies soon got popular in the circles of French artists, actors, writers in Paris as well as rich Americans visiting the city. In fact, they loved Frenchies so much that they took them to the US, where they finally got recognized by the AKC in .Frenchie Characteristics French Bulldogs are one of the most popular dog breeds thanks to their fun, adaptable, friendly nature and distinctive look. You can easily recognize them by their flat, heavily wrinkled faces and large, erect bat ears, which make them absolutely adorable. Despite having the strong, muscular body of a bulldog Frenchies are small in size: adult males usually weigh 20 to 28 pounds while females are 16 to 24 pounds. Frenchie Colors Frenchies come in a wide variety of different colors and patterns. There are standard French Bulldog colors like black, fawn, cream and patterns like pied and brindle, which are considered common for the breed. Rare and unique colors like blue and lilac, as well as patterns like tan and merle have gained more popularity in recent years. Frenchie Personality French Bulldogs probably have the biggest personality among all the dog breeds. They are funny, friendly and insanely affectionate, making them the perfect companions for anyone. They are also highly intelligent and need a fair amount of mental stimulation. Frenchies are like small children: simply irresistible! Giving only high- quality food, ensuring regular training and exercise, finding a good vet and not exposing them to too much heat is also essential to provide a long and happy life for your French Bulldog. Colors and patterns considered common for the breed like black brindle and fawn have the lowest prices ranging from 4, to 5, USD, while blue, lilac and merle which are more unique and harder to produce come at a higher price as well ranging from 6, to 8, USD. Isabella and fluffy Frenchies are the rarest, most valuable and most expensive from 8, to 30, USD. When it comes to age and gender, younger female Frenchies usually cost a couple of hundreds more than older male puppies. What's included in the price? Life Span Did You Know? While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water. Featured French Bulldog Article. A very important thing to remember is that there are big differences in the quality of puppies, from one Frenchie breeder to the next. The French Bulldog is both a brachycephalic flat-faced and chondrodystrophic dwarf breed, so they are prone to health issues, if they are not properly bred. The current popularity of the breed has brought a lot of inexperienced breeders, unscrupulous breeders, backyard breeders, and scammers into the market, so the advice is, buyer beware. Please make sure you are dealing with a reputable Frenchie breeder who has years of experience, high-quality dogs, good customer reviews, and a good guarantee. We introduce each litter when the puppies are generally between 6 and 8 weeks of age, after they have had their Vet check-ups. We post a video of each litter under the names of the parents and date of birth. This video will help show the personalities of each of the puppies in the litter, in addition to their color, conformation, and size. To minimize confusion, we generally do not include the puppies we plan to hold back for ourselves. It is at this time we start the reservation process. We do maintain a waiting list, and when new litters are introduced, we give priority to clients on the waiting list, based on the dates they made their deposits and puppy preferences they have given us. As puppies are reserved, we indicate the first names of the clients and their home states. Since we try to give clients a reasonable amount of time to make decisions on puppies they are considering, we cannot guarantee that puppies that are not shown as reserved will in fact be available. Our puppies are often mature enough to go to their new homes starting at 9 weeks of age, although not all puppies develop at the same pace, and we may want to hold some puppies a little longer. Some airlines also require that puppies that fly in the cabin with a puppy nanny or their owner be at least 10 weeks old. Over the years, with many conversations with Vets, that I respect, I've learned that puppy food is essentially a marketing ploy. In fact, when we first found Life's Abundance they didn't even have puppy food. It was redundant for them to carry puppy food. However, after pressure from so many customers that had decades of "Puppy Chow" commercials engrained in their heads, Life's Abundance decided to include a puppy food. If you prefer to feed the puppy food for the first couple of months we understand and feel is your decision to make and we do support you. We just ask that you stay with Life's Abundance as it's the best dog food and it's what your puppy has been consuming it's entire life, as well as, it's mother's entire pregnancy and life. This video is a great video to explain how to compare dog foods. First, I have strong opinions about most things, it's just my personality. I'm a Momma Bear type with my doodles. Some of my insanity I was just born with and the other sixty percent was gained by enduring some tragedies I don't ever want any of my families, including you, going through. In case you don't know, Life's Abundance, the company that makes all our food, supplements, treats, grooming products, and cleaning products are all delivered right to your front door for a very affordable amount. Life's Abundance food is very affordable and I will include a video at the bottom for you to watch. The dog food is made fresh every two to four weeks then immediately shipped out so your doodle's food isn't sitting on some shelf, on some semi-truck, in some warehouse, who knows where , and for who knows how long. Instead, we know where the food is being made and it's then on our front door step. Why does this matter? Well, your doodle can't say to you, "Hey, my food tastes moldy and I think it's why my liver and kidneys are hurting me but you won't know until I have bloody urine or I'm really sick. Do you think you could get me some fresh food? Many years ago I had a lab mix that was getting really sick and after being diagnosed with terminal liver problems did we realize the food was moldy. Next, one of our doodles many years ago got into a bag of China made chicken treats and ate more than the recommended serving and within four days she was dead. It was the worst tragedy that even writing about it now makes my stomach ache and my eyes tear up. My doodle was a normal, happy, fun loving doodle then suddenly the next morning she was so severely ill we had to go straight to the vet. Our doodle had no appetite, didn't want to move, was non-stop vomiting, with increased diarrhea with blood in it, she kept drinking water despite her belly looking so full, and she was constantly peeing and it was text book for poisoning from these treats. Telling this story has done me in for the night and I'm going to continue with my site later. I only explained this to help you from experiencing the heartbreak our family endured. From our experiences we searched long and far for a USA made dog food that never had a recall. When we did this search we found Life's Abundance. I checked and double checked this company. We learned it was started by a Vetrinarian which really impressed me from the beginning. Our doodles tested the food and loved it. We tried all the products and loved them. I searched all the dog food review websites and found rave reviews with an average of 4. I love that it was made fresh and never sat in a warehouse or on a store shelf for months, in most cases. I've heard of some big box companies buying tons of food from different companies to get discounts and most of the food sits and waits, in some random warehouse that isn't temperature controlled, for the food to sell so it to can make in onto a shelf at your local store to then be purchased by you. The question remains, how long has that food sat from when it was first made? With Life's Abundance, I know the answer, it was made fresh then shipped to you and I. Without a doubt, I will continue to find good products for our doodles and I will passionately share them with you, our doodle families. If for some reason Life's Abundance changes their quality or their product goes downhill or there is a better product then I will change our website and I will tell you why. I take being a "Full Service Breeder" seriously. I believe that my job begins once you adopt one of our doodles. When you adopt your doodle and take it home you are also gaining a doodle friend and confidant that you can call and get support from for life. I'm here to help you so you can just enjoy your doodle and come to one place for sound, honest advice. As my mother used to say, sometimes I'm too honest so be careful what you ask : lol. Copper Canyon Australian Labradoodles Feeding Your Labradoodle We get asked by nearly every puppy family what we recommend their new Australian Labradoodle puppy should be fed, how often and how much? Those are all good questions and answers will vary to those questions, depending on who one asks! We are not veterinarians and so do not dispense medical advice, but here is our opinion… The first question is to determine whether or not you wish to feed your dog on a kibble, home-cooked or raw diet. There are pros and cons to all! Cons: more washing of bowls, need to be careful to keep good hygene when handling raw meat. This is it, in a nutshell: take your adult dog for a decent walk first thing in the morning 30 to 45 minutes for this breed , then give them a meal of raw food once a day when you get home from the morning walk. And play with them and enjoy them! We feed raw food to our dogs, and they have done wonderfully on it. Most of us understand that processed, dehydrated and canned food is not as healthy for us as freshly prepared food, and the same logic applies to our pets as well. Sometimes we add cheese in or cottage cheese, sometimes we add yogurt. We will also add in powdered greens every now and then. Fresh veggies can be added too, but the dogs will get the most out of fresh veggies if they have been pureed in a food processor or juicer add the juice and pulp back together. We will give them raw rib bones to enjoy as a treat, and sometimes will give them the raw chicken backs or necks whole rather than coarse ground. We also have less problems with tartar build up and no problems with skin allergies in our dogs. We generally feed once a day, in the morning. They have stretch receptors in their stomach wall which is pleated and folded like an accordion and when they eat a full meal once a day, the stretching of the stomach wall sends signals to the brain that they are satiated. We feed in the morning, because in the wild, they would be up and covering ground as a pack while they hunted for breakfast. Once they gorge, they relax and NAP, which is great for when you need to be at work! Which is also why your dog should have a really good walk before you leave for work. Pregnant and nursing moms are fed more… sometimes a lot more! If you are feeding both raw and kibble, you can feed them both at the same time if you wish! But if you are switching your puppy from one type of food to another, do so very slowly so the puppy does not get an upset gut and then get diarrhea. Also, we do not give our dogs cooked bones of any sort, because cooking them makes them brittle and difficult to digest. Our butcher in town does two grinds a week for us, but many families with just one dog in the house will get it done every two or four weeks and freeze portions in baggies or on a cookie sheet and then simply take out the needed amount every day and put it in the bowl. You can also purchase premade raw formulas in frozen chubs and take out what you need. Do read ingredient lists or ask questions, as some raw formulations contain no bone, and you want to make sure that the dog has bones in the diet so they can have healthy teeth and bones themselves. I bought mine second hand from Amazon. Kibble Pros: convenient, less washing of dog bowls, no raw meat to handle Cons: more volume of poop to clean, dog is more at risk to develop allergies, possibly shorter life span Kibble is easy, clean and the most convenient for many families… AND there is a tremendous variety of processed kibbles available. They vary in quality of ingredients and cost. I believe that the most healthy diet for your new dog is either a well balanced raw diet or home-cooked diet, but if that is not workable, here is a bit of info about various types of kibble and how to choose a good one! If you are going to feed kibble, we have found that almost ALL of the typical dry dog food brands have fillers in them… which also means that you scoop more poop when you feed these poorer quality foods, sometimes double the amount of poop to clean up! If the first ingredient in the list is a grain, do not buy it. Top quality foods will have the first ingredient listed as a meat meal of some kind; for instance: chicken meal, fish meal, lamb meal, etc. This is important, because by the time the meat is dehydrated into meal, it is a very dense source of nutrition. Many kibbles have a lot of chemical preservatives in them, which gives a long shelf life of up to two years. BUT they are likely the leading cause of skin allergies or other digestive allergies in dogs. Natural preservatives such as rosemary, vitamin E or other herbs will generally have a shelf life of six months or so… so it needs to be bought from a place that has a good turn-over of stock and then used up. Here on the West coast of Canada, there are a number of premium brands recommended, such as Go! Your own area will likely have dog foods that are manufactured fairly locally and will be of good quality. Food Allergies Food allergies are troublesome to narrow down sometimes, as commercial kibbles often have many allergens in them. If your dog reacts to the kibble, is it the preservatives, the wheat, the rice or the chicken??! The most common allergens we have found are preservatives and grains. Some dogs may also be allergic to certain types of meats and some dogs can also be allergic to environmental things such as grass. You can easily sort out allerg ies on your own with an elimination diet. The simplest way to figure out food allergies for dogs is to give them only ONE food source for a week. Try lean ground beef from the grocery store for a week. Then try the dog on chicken for a week, etc. Do be aware that allergy symptoms can take up to six weeks to completely disappear, so you will be looking for gradual improvement. It is often a good idea to do a 24 hour fast with liquids only to help speed clearing the toxic stuff out of their systems too. Puppies hypoglycemic, pregnant or lactating dogs should nt be fasted. For puppies, as an alternative to fasting, you can put the dog on a temporary two or three day diet of Porridge made from oatmeal and water ONLY, or try them on cooked white rice for a couple of days. You can also drizzle a bit of canned chicken broth on top for flavour. This will prevent them from going hypoglycemic but will still give their digestive system an easy time of it so it can clear the toxins and begin healing. Switching from raw to kibble If your puppy has been used to eating raw food, DO NOT switch its diet for the first week to ten days so that its diet and world are not changed at the same time if possible. Then begin by introducing 10 percent new food to 90 percent familiar food. Do this for 2 or 3 days and make sure the stool is normal. It can take a couple of weeks to switch your puppy to a new diet. Some families continue feeding part raw or cooked and part kibble. Other families feed raw some days and kibble on others. And yet others will transition the dog to entirely a different feed. But it is a very good idea when transitioning them, to first get them used to cooked food until their gut ph and bacteria are transitioned to this new food. Then after a week or more of them eating solely cooked food, you can introduce it to them raw. After all that has been said, this is our opinion, in a nutshell: take your adult dog for a decent walk first thing in the morning 30 to 45 minutes for this breed , then give them a meal of raw food once a day when you get home from the morning walk. You can view recipes and place an order online by going to the top right corner of our website and clicking on the orange box named 'DOG FOOD' How often should I feed my labradoodle puppy? When Lomond Hills puppies leave for their new homes, they eat 4 meals per day. The first is usually given at 8am, the second at .Obviously, you need to feed him at times which suit your schedule, but try your best to have similar time gaps between meals. If you choose to feed your puppy on another brand then make sure you look at meat content, fresh meat content, fillers and bulking agents as well as nutritional additives. We believe that a dry kibble diet is best as wet food tends to cling to the teeth which then results in constant teeth cleaning. We suggest that you feed him in his crate with the door closed so that he makes a positive association between the food and crate. We also suggest that you simultaneously train him to sit. Bring the food bowl and your puppy over to the crate, pop him inside and say 'sit' in a clear and firm voice, whilst using one hand to signal the command usually a pointed finger and the other hand the plant his bottom firmly on the ground. Keep that hand firmly on his bottom and use the other hand to put the bowl of food in front of him. Let go of his bottom and close the crate door. As time goes on, you will find you won't need to push his bottom down and he will respond to the voice and hand signal. This is a great time to achieve 'sit', because the food acts as the reward. A typical meal size would be grams in dry weight for an 8 week old puppy, but this does vary a little dependent on the size of your puppy. When your puppy has finished his meal, you will find that his tummy is noticeably bigger - this is normal. By the time the next mealtime comes around, his tummy should be back to normal size if it is not, you fed him too much on the previous meal. As he gets older, you can reduce the number of meals in the day, but increase the portion size. By 12 weeks old, you could have him down to three meals and by 6 months old that could be reduced to two meals. We feed all of our adult dogs twice per day - 8am and 5pm. This table provides a guideline for how much to feed your puppy as he grows, but there is no exact formula as there are other factors to consider such as activity levels and physical condition. Ideally, you want your puppy to be at a weight where you can feel his ribs, but his top line and hip bones are nicely covered. Australian Labradoodles do not tend to be greedy dogs, but maintaining a healthy weight is very important. Food We feed our puppies 3 times a day until they reach approximately 19 weeks old. Then we switch to 2 meals per day, one in the morning and one in the evening. We will send you home with a sample package of the dog food that they were on while in our home. If you plan on switching, please do so gradually as to not upset their stomachs. Click Here for a great site that rates the different dog foods. Whole Dog Journal is an informative monthly newsletter packed with wonderful stuff. They also do a dog food review that is invaluable. To check it out Click Here. Clean, fresh water should always be freely available. Apple Cider Vinegar is said to have a large number of benefits for them. For more information: Click Here Sleeping Your new Australian Labradoodle puppy will be missing its mother and litter mates and the comfort of cuddling with them to sleep. It may help to rumple up the bedding and roll up some towels for puppy to snuggle up to. Each pup will go home with a cloth that has been rubbed against their mom and will retain her smell. Put this with your puppy so the familiar smell will help puppy settle in for the night. Some soft music or a ticking clock can also be helpful. Your presence will be reassuring. Your puppy will need to go out in the middle of the night, so wear your warm PJs. House Training Your Australian Labradoodle puppy will come to you already familiar with the crate. House training is more about your vigilance than it is about the puppy. Restrict the area your puppy can be while indoors. Watch your puppy like a hawk. If they show signs like circling or sniffing, carry them outside. When puppy goes in the right place, have a little party and then go back inside. Puppy should be able to hold it for an hour, then let puppy out and go directly outside to the potty spot. Once puppy goes, have a party and then take puppy back inside for some free time with you. As puppy succeeds with the free time, you can lengthen the time. Soon puppy will be spending a few hours with you, an hour in the crate and then pottying outside. This routine will take time and lots of commitment. Once puppy understands that outside is the place to go, you can give puppy more free space in the house. Remember, puppies need to go to the toilet at some predictable times such as after waking up from a sleep, after eating or drinking, after anything exciting…. Exercise Australian Labradoodle puppies under 1 year old should have restricted time on the leash. Jogging for miles or going on very long walks on the leash forces the puppy to perform the same mechanical movement at the same pace for long periods of time. This is not natural for puppies. Puppies are used to changing pace frequently, galloping one minute and then trotting the next. If puppies are forced to maintain a pace for a long time, it can damage ligaments and immature joints. Playing outside and short periods on leash will provide puppy a safe amount of exercise. Leash Times: 10 wks-4 months: Puppies could safely do a 15 minute walk on leash. Puppies should not be allowed to do any of the above. Failure to observe these things can induce hip dysplasia and other joint problems even in a healthy puppy.

American Pit Bull: Boxer Puppy Biting and Nipping When we talk about Boxer puppies biting children, both younger and older kids, toys or even biting at your feet, what most are actually talking about is nipping. There is a huge difference between the 2 words. A nip is a quick snap of the jaws, it can be done in the air close to a person or it can make skin contact yet it is a pinch type bite that often does not break the skin. Boxer puppies and even older dogs nip, not to attack someone, but to send a warning. The warning is not necessarily that of an impending attack… Boxer puppy nipping is done for one of several reasons: As play — Young pups are used to nipping at their littermates as a form of play and this may carry over as they transition into their new home. If a Boxer puppy is biting a lot, it may be an issue of the dog needing to learn the rules of the home and needing to learn that was used to be acceptable with other pups is no longer acceptable with his humans. A Method of Sending a Message — Boxer dogs of any age may nip for many reasons. Unable to vocalize, the nip is a message. Often it is a low growl, lasting just seconds, with teeth bared. In some cases, there will only be a growl as the dog lowers his back, hunches over and bares his teeth yet does not actually physically bite. On the other hand, an actual bite not a nip is a full force, aggressive action in which the jaws lock down and teeth puncture the skin. The dog intends to inflict injury and the person on the other end often receives it unless thick clothing gets in the way, etc. In the following section we will discuss how to stop a Boxer dog from biting in the sense that the dog is actually nipping and it is not a full force, aggression bite meant to do serious harm. Training to Stop Boxer Puppy to Stop Biting and Nipping Overview Many owners feel, and rightfully so, that a bite is a serious issue and a behavior that needs to be addressed immediately. For this reason, they feel that taking serious action is the only way to stop the behavior… and this is where things can go wrong. And this is because it does not teach the dog what he needs to learn. Yelling, hitting or otherwise intimidating a puppy or dog will only serve to make the dog afraid of his owner. Alternatively, some dogs will see this as a challenge. So, owners must choose: Fear or respect. For a happy, healthy environment in which humans and canines live in peace, the Boxer or any other dog should be taught to respect his humans, not fear them. In addition, for a dog that bites, physically isolating him will stop the problem short term…while the dog is taken away of course he is not biting anyone…. It is a huge mistake to miss out on a chance to train a dog to stop biting. Of course, in the rare chance that a dog is full out biting, causing injury and is clearly dangerously aggressive, the dog should be removed… And measures must be taken to keep the family safe from any potential attacks…but again, this does not relate to puppy nipping, play biting or nipping due to teething, etc. Training a Boxer puppy to stop biting takes a bit of mental will power. You may have heard this before: Ignore the puppy. There is no other way for a dog to interpret this, as it is canine mentality. His humans and any other animals in the home are his pack. Every single pack that exists has a leader. Having a leader is a defining element of a pack. Problems can arise when a dog does not have a clear understanding of who that leader is. Humans begin eating. Two to three minutes pass. Once the dog obeys, a delicious and healthy meal is set down for him. So, once a dog knows that his human is in charge, how does this training stop the Boxer from biting….? When a Boxer understands that his human s are his leader s , being ignored is akin to being rejected by pack. A dog will suddenly be very humbled. He will worry that his pack has turned their backs on him… he will question his behavior and, when done correctly, he will make the connection that his action of biting caused a major problem with his standing in his family…. If you were both on the floor, stand up. If you were holding him, place him down. If you were both sitting on the sofa, rise up. This means zero talking, absolutely no looking in his direction…nothing. As a Boxer puppy works very hard to gain attention of any one in the house, everyone even those who were not bitten should be completely indifferent to the dog. Allow 10 minutes to pass. Now, when you are doing this, 2 minutes may feel like 20, so take a look at the clock and then choose an activity flip through the TV, check your email, get a drink…do whatever you want, but do remain in the house so that your Boxer can see that you are ignoring him and wait it out. After those 10 minutes, it is time to speak to your Boxer, but not engage him in any activity yet. Many times, the puppy will test things out. Simply mull around near your dog, speaking a bit and acting matter-of-fact. Do not give praise. Wait things out for about 5 minutes. If your Boxer does not nip or bite at you, it will be time to go back to the position that you were in when the bite occurred. It is at this time that if your Boxer does not nip at you that praise and attention can be given. If the dog does bite again, the complete ignoring method of training must be done — this means that the dog is testing things to see if it was indeed his nip that caused his temporary outcast from the pack. My bully was from the first litter that Char had and I want to say, not only did I get a magnificent dog who soon will be 8, she is healthy also. I am happy to say that in all the years since I have had Saydee Rose, Char has always been there for us not only as her breeder but also as a dear friend. Any questions or problems that could arise I know I could go to her and she would take the time to answer them. Even the great comments she say about my other dogs I have is so sincere. Although there are many great bull dog breeders out there, I personally would always want to own one of Char's and will always recommend her. Their knowledge, love and care for this breed is evident the second you meet them. They take the time to educate and even mentor you, if you're new to this quirky breed. Over The Top Bulldogs is what responsible breeders should aspire to be and what every prospective owner should seek. Not only will you get the most wonderful addition to your family, you'll have breeders that you'll be happy to call friends. Over 4 years ago, my then boyfriend and I decided that we wanted to add a new fur baby into our lives. Jorden, my now husband has always loved bulldogs. The look, the temperment, the silliness. I was of course on board. After some pretty extensive research, we came across Charlene, and am I glad we did!! Charlene met up with us at her home for an interview. I realized during this interview how passionate she was about what she did and the breed itself. She was really a plethora of bulldog information and was able to answer any question we had. Our lives have never been the same. Our dogs are the epitome of the breed definition. They are gorgeous, strong, hilarious, stubborn, incredibly loving and amazing with our 2 children. We have had no breed related health issues, they have gone for their annual checkups every year and have been in perfect health since day one. Charlene has become a friend. Her phone lines are always open for any questions or concerns, any time of day or night. I cannot speak highly enough of both our amazing fur babies or Charlene and the outstanding job she does with her careful breeding consideration, making sure all fur babies go to phenomenal homes and taking such joy and pride the entire time. I would recommend Over The Top Bulldogs to everyone looking for a new bulldog family member. My house will never be without one of these characters!! Charlene's reputation for beautiful, well tempered bulldogs, her extensive experience and knowledge with the breed, and her quest to promote and better the breed resounded amongst the Toronto Bulldog community, and she truly exceeded our expectations. Charlene invited us to her home, and introduced us to her family, both two legs and four. It was evident from the start the love that she and her children had for her bullies. The puppies were next to Charlene's bedroom, rather than somewhere segregated from the family where they could be constantly cuddled and handled by her and her children to ensure they had the proper attention. We ourselves spent several hours playing with both her puppy and adult bullies, surprised at how energetic, smart and well behaved they were. We fell in love immediately. It was clear how devoted she was to all her puppies, how serious she was about finding them the proper home, and that they were going to live the lavish life. When it was time to pick up our puppy Rupert, Charlene and her children took time to hug him good bye and they all became quite emotional. After 8 years, despite the distance between us, Charlene still keeps in close contact, always enquiring about Rupert and asking for photos. She is always available to answer questions or concerns, and did not hesitate to come visit when poor Rupert had broken his leg. He, thanks to Charlene, has changed our lives, he has an ability to always make us laugh, and couldn't imagine life without him. Thank you Charlene for your unwavering contribution to this beautiful breed and all that you have done for us and Rupert. Rob, Jen and Rupert Acquiring an English bulldog puppy at this stage of our lives was kind of a sudden decision for this family. And the breeder connection had already been established through unusual circumstances. I remember thinking: "But I don't even know IF this is a reputable breeder! Charlene's bulldogs "tick all of the boxes" of what a well bred bully should be - in every way with health and temperament at the top of the list. She raises beautiful families - her own and her dogs! Our Harry is simply the best and has been the most wonderful addition to this older family. I would recommend Over the Top Bulldogs to anyone wanting to add one of her wonderful pups to their lives! We had a bulldog previous to owning our pup, and although she was a lovely dog, she was plagued with health problems her whole life. Charlene's dogs are happy, healthy and have great temperments. We are so happy that we have found a breeder who strives to do the best for the breed by trying to continue the great traits of the English Bulldog by carefully selecting who is in her breeding program. The pups are raised in her home, and are socialized with other dogs, kids and other people from birth so you know that they can handle almost anything. We couldn't be more pleased with our little girl Molly who has made our lives so happy. Life is good, but it just that much better when you own a bulldog! Balance Out the Entire Body There is no denying that poodles are high-maintenance canines that will require a lot of grooming. However, if you have the willingness and patience, every owner can learn the skill to groom these furballs. Read on to know about all the important steps which are necessary to groom a standard poodle at home. Prepare the Space for Grooming Kitchen counters are often considered the best spots for grooming canines. This is because they provide ample space for your dog to lay down and stay there for a while. However, you will need to create a comfortable arrangement for your pooch by using blankets and towels. Poodle Report suggests that you can also purchase a foldable dog grooming table paid link for your pup. This will make things even cozier because this product is specifically designed for this purpose. This is important because the coat should be completely clean and dry to ensure a smooth and pain-free experience. Use a pet-friendly shampoo and conditioner to bathe your pooch. Make sure that these cleaning products are removed properly from the fur. Dry your dog with a towel to absorb most of the moisture. Then, use a hairdryer to complete the drying process. Be mindful of difficult-to-reach areas, like armpits, and untangle all the knots before proceeding. Groom the Face and Neck Start by ensuring that the head of your poodle is secure and still. When the pooch is in position, start clipping the hair towards the ear. Keep the blade flat against the cheek and facing away from the eyes at all times. Once you are done with the face, shift your focus towards the neck. Start shaving from the neck towards the chin while keeping the nose upward. This will allow you to pull the neck skin taut, which is quite helpful for preventing painful nicks. Dogington Post advises the owners to use the same blade setting to get a uniform trim. Move the trimmer from the nape of the neck towards the tail while keeping the blade parallel to the back. Move to the Torso and Legs Once you are done with the back, you can start grooming the legs of your dog. If your canine friend is not willing to lie down, make sure they are well-balanced while trimming their legs. Clip downwards from the chest towards the belly and then from the base of the rib cage towards the armpits. Keep brushing the body while trimming to ensure a smooth finishing to the coat. For the legs, begin at the top of each leg and groom all the way to the ankle. You can clip the hair from these parts by gently lifting the opposite leg. Clip the Hair on the Feet One by one, hold a paw in your hand and trim the extra hair on the paws. You should also remove the superfluous fluff between the toes by separating the paw pads. Move the trimmer from the outside of the toes towards the inside. Groom the Tail The tail of your poodle can be trimmed as thin or round, depending upon your preference. Irrespective of the style you select, observe a lot of caution during this step. Balance Out the Entire Body After trimming all the body parts, you need to even out the hair of your poodle. This step is extremely important to give the desired visual appearance to your pooch. Start by setting up a standard for the length of coat you want. After that, use the trimmer to even out the entire body of your dog. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This loving breed has secured a spot in the Top 10 most popular dog breeds for a reason, and they deserve the best from their owners. If you own a poodle puppy or plan to adopt one soon — this guide is for you and will include everything you need to know to groom your poodle puppy! So how do you groom a poodle puppy? Clip his nails Brush his Teeth We will also cover tips for how to care for your poodle puppy and help them develop into the healthiest canine possible. Being a pet owner is a great responsibility. A bit of research will go a long way in caring for your fur-baby, so bookmark this page and prepare for all the puppy wisdom in store. However, you can absolutely groom your poodle from home. It will take proper care and education, maybe even studying on YouTube to see how to groom your pup. This time you spend grooming can save you money and be meaningful to your pup. This is a bonding time for you and your poodle, and no groomer will love your dog the way you do. Treat your pup with tender care, and the grooming process will likely be easier and result in much less fight and combativeness. The steps you should take to groom from home properly are: 1. Prepare the space — since they are often medium to large in size, trimming their hair on the kitchen counter or the Foldable Dog Grooming Table are the best spots for their grooming session. If it feels like a cold metal table, they will be miserable like any living creature, so find them a spot as serene as your salon. Bathe your pup with the recommended shampoos and conditioners above and dry with a hairdryer to get that voluminous style that the poodle is notorious for. DO NOT place the hairdryer on a high temperature and keep in mind they have sensitive skin. Keep the temperature on warm, not hot. Keep the blades parallel to the body, with a safe distance from their skin kept during the entire trimming. Close trimming should be done with an electric razor that has a protective plastic covering over the sharp parts. Start with their face, holding the poodles face still and secure gently but unable to move , and clip towards the ear. Keep the blade facing away from their eyes and basically flat against their cheek, just trimming the long hairs that have grown around their face and neck. Clip slowly and always with the sharp tip facing away, and the blade parallel to the body. Take your time and leave as much hair as looks flattering on your pup. Next, move to their feet. Have them sit down or laying comfortably if possible. Clip around the extra fluff on their paws and separate the toe pads to clip superfluous fluff between their toes. You can also gentle take the electric clipper around the feet from outside toe to inside, careful to mind the nails. Now you can trim the tail to as thin or round and silly as you prefer! This is why the body will be trimmed last. Use the more sensitive parts of their body to set the framework for how short of a trim looks appropriate for your pup. Can you Shave a Poodle Puppy? Yes, you absolutely can shave a poodle, but they will look like this. When can you Groom a Poodle Puppy? Do Poodles Have Fur or Hair? Pets The Nest says that the actual reason behind this breed being hypoallergenic is because they have hair instead of fur. It will be less necessary in the colder months when dogs enjoy having an extra layer for warmth. The curls actually give the poodle the appearance of not shedding at all, but they do. Puppies hair will be different than adult poodle hair because it will be more sensitive and even softer. Poodles will be as hypoallergenic and non-shedding as most any dog can get. They may be 3 years old before their full adult coat comes in. It is very important that you get your puppy comfortable with grooming and brushing during these early months so that they are not stubborn or fighting you during grooming sessions. Keep it strictly-business and try to make it a serious but soothing practice that will help them bond to you. Grooming is a time where you let them know they can relax while you brush out their mats. It can be annoying as with any puppy to get them to do what you want, but regular brushing will train them that this time is not for play. Not only will this make your life easier, but also your groomers, so train them early! Popular Clips AKA Hairstyles for Poodles The most popular styles you will see on a poodle are as follows with linked pictures for a visual : The Puppy Clip — this look received its name because it is common for poodles under 12 months to use this haircut. It shaves the face, feet, and tail with an optional topknot. The Teddy Bear Clip — this cut is incredibly endearing, especially on smaller poodles. It gives them the rounded facial angles like a fluffy teddy bear and clips the hair evenly all around. The Lamb Clip — when you picture the fancy and poufy poodles at dog shows with the thin legs and well-proportioned lines, this is the Lamb Clip. This style is like your pup is wearing a thick bathrobe or fur coat, but it can be very glamorous if adapted to a certain style. The Lion Clip — just as it sounds, this clip shaves their body but leaves the upper and lower parts of their body fluffed and mane-like. The Town and Country Clip — this look is great for summertime because they have a belly, face, neck, and feet all shaved. What remains is left to grow out on its own. Also, be sure to utilize this hilarious resource of wild and crazy poodle haircuts for inspiration! Poodle Grooming Tools We will cover brushes in the next section because they need their own category, but you will want some back-up tools for at-home appointments. You can take them into the groomers each month or do some maintenance in-between from home to save time and money. Especially in the winter months when it is less important to have them groomed. Regardless, your poodle will need daily brushing to untangle mattings and knots that easily occurs in their soft hair. This will be good practice for later on — for both of you! Yes, haircuts are essential for Poodles. Their thick, long, curly coats are prone to tangling and trapping debris. When will my Poodle puppy need haircuts? Then, at around four months old, they will shed their puppy coats and start to grow out their rougher adult coats. Frequency As a general rule, Poodles should have their coats clipped every weeks once their adult coats grow out, whatever your desired length. This is because they grow so quickly and can become matted just as fast! What equipment should I use? There are three main types of dog grooming scissors; straight scissors, curved scissors, and thinning shears, and they all perform slightly differently. Straight grooming scissors are a multi-task tool, they have straight blades for general, basic grooming, creating straight lines in the coat, and adding the finishing touches to haircuts. Curved dog grooming shear has a curved blade that can be used to fine-tune and shape specific areas of the coat, such as the paws and hindquarters. Thinning shears have a cutting edge on one blade and teeth on the other, and there are also double thinners that have teeth on both blades. They are designed to remove lots of hair in even sections for a natural finish, and they can also be used to blend out the harsh lines from clippers and texturize the coat. Or, if you just need something for the occasional touch-up between visits to the groomer, a simple pair of electrical motor clippers will do just fine. Electric motor clippers are also good for keeping short coats short. You should also be aware of the types of blades that come with clippers. The higher the number of the blade, the more hair that it will remove. Or, you can get guards that fit a single blade to customize the length, which is a lot more convenient. Start by showing them the equipment and getting them used to the sight and sound of it before you cut any hair. Reward them just for being around it and then try cutting a small section of hair. If they react well, reward them again, and then do another section. Keep rewarding them as you go and again after the haircut is finished. Do it in a well-lit, comfortable part of the home that your pup can stand up in. Once you get them into a routine — keep it up! Work your way down the legs first, then from the neck to the hindquarters, or vice versa, and then the tail. Take care with the feet, underside, and head, shielding their eyes from falling fur. Use long strokes and go from the neck down to the back legs. How to deal with grooming anxiety If your pup is afraid of the scissors or clippers, take it really slowly and try to make it an enjoyable experience. You can do this by breaking up the haircut into smaller sessions to make it less stressful and taking breaks in between each one. Give your dog lots of praise and a reward every time you take a break and ask another family member to comfort them during the haircut. You can start brushing your Poodle from any age. To brush them, simply go in the direction of hair growth using short strokes. Hold the fur at the base with your free hand to remove knots, and use a mat remover for any stubborn mats. Bathing a Poodle puppy As for bathing, you should give your Poodle pup their first proper bath at months old to help them shed their puppy coat, unless they get seriously dirty before that. However, you can give your pup a bath any time after weeks of age to get them used to the sensation, but avoid overbathing them, as this will strip the fur of its natural oils and make it dry and brittle. Once they have their adult coats, your Poodle pup will need a bath once a month. You can even buy shampoo that is designed especially for Poodle coats. To give your Poodle a bath, lather up their wet fur with the shampoo, massage it in, leave it for as long as directed on the bottle, and rinse thoroughly. Follow up with conditioner if necessary. In addition to purchasing your new furry friend, there are also routine adoption fees that may apply if you choose to adopt instead of buying from a breeder. Factors That Impact the Cost of a Boxer When looking at getting a Boxer, it's important to be mindful of the various elements that can affect its price. Some key aspects influencing the price include colors, bloodline and purity, breeder reputation, and estimated size. Colors of a Boxer The color of a Boxer may affect its price as certain coat colors are more sought after than others. For example, fawn and brindle are common colors for this breed; however, white boxers tend to be rarer and may come with a higher price tag. It is important to note that American Kennel Club AKC standards do not recognize all-white or black boxers in conformation events. Breeders Reputation The reputation of the breeder you choose plays a significant role in determining how much you'll pay for your new furry friend. Reputable breeders invest time and resources into ensuring their dogs' well-being while prioritizing responsible breeding practices such as genetic testing for hereditary conditions like hip dysplasia or heart issues commonly found within this breed source. Estimated Size of a Boxer The estimated size of the adult dog can also influence its cost. Generally, larger dogs require more resources such as food, grooming services, and healthcare which may lead to higher expenses over their lifetime. All you have to do is replace the toy with the newspaper and tech your Pitbull boxer how to get it, pick it up or bring it back to you. Should a Boxer Mix take after their Boxer parent, they will be a playful, energetic, and friendly dog that loves their family and loves being active with them. Boxers are known for their energetic and exuberant personalities. They bond closely with their families, tend to have a cheerful disposition, and also tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they are friendly dogs, they do have the instinct to protect their families. If the other parent breed has similar traits, then you should be able to expect a similar temperament in a Boxer Mix. Asking the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix is a good start. You can also meet the mother dog to get a feel for her temperament and to see what behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should be socializing puppies while they have them, it is up to you to continue training and socializing a puppy once you get them home. Boxers are moderately adaptable dogs. Because of their energy, they tend to do better in homes with yards where they can run. But, they can adapt to apartments as long as they get exercise and mental stimulation throughout the day. Although all dogs are sensitive to heat, the Boxer is even more so because of their short snout. And, because they bond so closely with their families, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. The other parent breed could introduce some traits that could affect the adaptability of a Boxer Mix, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Knowing more about the other parent breed will help you get a better idea of what range of potential characteristics to expect. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? A Boxer Mix can inherit any combination of the potential health issues common to one or both of their parent breeds. Or, they could inherit none of them. From the Boxer side, potential health conditions include degenerative myelopathy, thyroid deficiency, hip dysplasia, and heart conditions. Boxers also tend to have sensitive digestive systems, which often makes them gassy. As a brachycephalic dog, they will also snort and snore. Because they are a barrel-chested breed, they are also at a higher risk for bloat in dogs. This can become dangerous, especially if the stomach flips, so you want to make sure you reduce the risk when you can and know the symptoms so you can get help as soon as possible. Since reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing issues on to puppies, they should be able to answer your questions. Despite their high energy, Boxers are highly trainable dogs that can be a good fit for owners of any experience level. Because they are intelligent, they pick up on things quickly and can get bored easily. But, they are eager to please their owners and tend to respond well to training. The other parent breed could make a Boxer Mix even easier to train or more difficult to train. You want to make sure you ask the breeder about the other parent breed so you know what range of trainability to expect. A Boxer Mix can end up with a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a combination of both of them. Monthly nail trims are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Ears should be dry, clean, and free of debris or pests. Unfortunately, many dog owners overlook dental care, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed. Daily walks plus playtime and other activities should be enough for this dog. However, they will likely be up for more activity if you are. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog breed, then you can expect a Boxer Mix to also be a high-energy dog. However, this is a potential range, so you will still need to be prepared to deal with a Boxer Mix that is high-energy. A Boxer usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can affect this, especially if they are the mother, so you do want to ask about them. A Boxer generally lives for years. It's our goal to be here when you need us for the life of your pug. Welcome to the Companion Pups family! Pin it to remember the Price of Pugs Why are Pugs so expensive? So just why are Pugs so expensive? One reason is because Pugs, like most other Brachycephalic dogs with flat faces and large heads , are most often born via cesarean section. Pugs are also susceptible to numerous orthopedic and hereditary diseases—so reputable breeders will conduct testing on both parents to help ensure a healthy litter. This test screens for Hip Dysplasia and Patellar Luxation. Breeders also have the option to test for Elbow Dysplasia with this screening. This important test screens for Necrotizing meningoencephalitis NME , a fatal brain disorder that can kill Pug puppies. This metabolic disease breaks down the red blood cells of a young Pug. The price will depend on several factors: The location of the breeder. The rules of supply and demand pertain to dogs as well so larger metropolitan areas are often more expensive. The pedigree of the parent Pugs. Pugs that have participated in sanctioned competitions have more expensive litters. Whether the Pug is a show quality dog or a pet quality dog. Show quality puppies with a future in competitive dog shows and breeding are more expensive. The age of the Pug. Puppies are definitely more expensive; you may occasionally find a breeder selling a retired breeding Pug or a Pug that originated at the breeder but has been returned. The color of the Pug. AKC recognized two colors : black and fawn. The Canadian Kennel Club recognizes fawn, silver fawn and black. The Federation Cynologique Internationale and the Kennel Club of the UK both recognize silver sometimes called silver-fawn , apricot often called apricot-fawn , fawn and black. The less common the color, the more expensive the dog. Attend a sanctioned dog show and talk with Pug breeders and competitors for recommendations. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations regarding reputable breeders. Do an online search for complaints. Check the Facebook page of the breeder and read through comments. Remember, however, comments can be deleted by the page owner. When you find a breeder and want to determine if they are reputable: Ask for references. The breeder should be happy to share the name and contact information for customers. Ask questions. Lots of questions. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings. Ask how often the dogs are bred. Ask to tour the kennels. Are they well maintained? Do the dogs look healthy? Beware of operations that will not let you tour the kennels and breeders that want to meet you in a parking lot to hand over the puppy. Be prepared for questions. The breeder should ask YOU questions as well; be suspicious if the breeder has no questions about your past history with pets, your living situation, etc. Ask if the breeder will take the Pug back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. Pug breeders may adopt out of the area but, nonetheless, you will want to go to the breeder to meet the parents, view the kennels and bring home your puppy in person. This will add to your expenses—but breeders that transport a puppy by air are putting the dog at risk. If you want to buy a Pug online, please think again. There are numerous scams; people spend thousands of dollars for a dog and never receive a puppy. AKC warns potential pet parents to be wary of any seller asking for payment by Venmo, in gift cards or as a wire transfer. Dogs purchased from puppy mills can mean years of heartache and expensive veterinary care. The pros of purchasing from a Pug breeder: You may be able to select a puppy—including a choice of color and gender. A reputable breeder will be passionate about Pugs and will a resource for years to come. The cons of purchasing from a Pug breeder You will pay more for a Pug from a breeder than a rescue or shelter. If you find a breeder who has Pug puppies for sale at prices far lower than you are seeing from other breeders, you must suspect you are dealing with a backyard breeder who has not done health screening, with an online seller who is operating a puppy mill or is running a scam. You will need to wait until puppies are available. You will need to do your own due diligence to select a reputable breeder. Pugs in rescues are far less expensive that those at a breeder. Pugs under a year old will be the most costly. The dogs that are up for adoption at Pug rescues may be there for a variety of reasons: Death of an owner. Lost Pugs that the rescue had seen on shelter websites. Pugs a breeder no longer wanted. Whatever the reason, the Pugs in rescue may or may not come with papers, depending on whether or not the dog was surrendered with papers. You may also find Pug rescues at pet expos and special events in your area. Rescues will often have a booth with information on the rescue and a few adoptable dogs. Most dogs at purebred rescues are pulled from shelters, often open-intake shelters that may not be no-kill shelters. You will be able to adopt a Pug for far less money than purchasing a Pug from a breeder. You will be able to talk with people who are passionate about Pugs about the individual Pug you are interested in adopting. Our most recent search brought up a healthy, 7-month-old Pug puppy so you never know. Your dog may or may not be a purebred Pug and may or may not have papers. The least expensive option when it comes to Pug prices is the shelter, either a municipal shelter or a privately-operated shelter. Are you a senior? A member of the military or law enforcement? Many shelters offer special discounts. To locate a Pug at a shelter, call your local shelter or start your search online. Click on the link of adoptable Pugs in the top left corner; you can then enter your zip code to see Pugs near you. The listings will include both rescues and shelters. Unlike adopting from a Pug rescue, dogs at a shelter will generally be housed at the shelter although an increasing number utilize foster homes whenever they can, especially for puppies. If the dog is housed at the shelter, you may not know a lot about his or her personality. Talk with the shelter staff and ask if the dog has been temperament tested and if they can tell you if the dog is skittish, shy, outgoing, has any prior training, etc. And while you may see dogs listed as a Pug at a shelter, that may or may not mean they are Pugs, purebred or mixed. Shelters use their best judgement, often while intaking many dogs, so sometimes the accuracy of the breed is questionable. Since Pugs do have such a distinctive look, however, you can use your judgement to see if the dog displays usual Pug characteristics and markings. Ask the shelter if they have any background on the dogs; you may be surprised to find a puppy whose purebred mother came in as a pregnant lost dog and gave birth at the shelter. It definitely happens. The Pros of Adopting a Pug from a Shelter You are saving a life, not only of the dog you adopt but of the next dog who will be rescued due to the kennel that is now clear. Your new dog will have received a long list of veterinary services. You will have the love of a dog whose price was far less than that of a dog from a breeder. You may not know the history of the dog. FAQ What is the cheapest price for a Pug? If you find low-cost purebred Pugs listed online, please consider that you may be supporting a puppy mill. What is the Teacup Pug price? These dogs are the result of breeding the smallest runt dog of one litter to the smallest dog of another litter, producing smaller than usual Pugs—and selling them for sometimes twice as much as a traditional Pug. Quality The cost will vary from low to high based on the quality of the Pug too. There are two primary kinds of Pugs: show quality and pet quality. Show quality Pug puppies are more costly compared to the pet quality ones. Some competent Pug breeders will ensure the puppies are health tested to evaluate possible genetic disorders and diseases. The price of a German Shepherd puppy can vary a lot from one breeder to another. German Shepherds are active and need plenty of stimulation. Flea and tick preventatives are a must-have. You might face additional costs such as pet insurance, training classes, boarding fees, or dog walkers. Puppies tend to cost more due to the high demand. However, professional breeders charge a lot more. Professional breeders usually conduct health testing for the parents. Elbow and hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy are the two main tests to look for when adopting a GSD puppy. Prenatal care for the mother can be expensive. These costs can include bloodwork, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Most breeders raise the puppies for the first eight to 12 weeks. They provide nutrition, a living space, socialization, and sometimes early training. Puppies typically receive veterinary care, including a first round of booster shots and a deworming treatment. Colors German Shepherds can come in a few different colors. Black and tan and black and cream are the most common GSD colors. However, there are rarer colors, like black and silver, sable, or black. These colors meet the official breed standards, and a puppy with an unusual color can be worth more. Bloodline and Purity One of the key factors that influences the cost of a GSD puppy is the parents and their pedigrees. A breeder will look at how well the parents match the AKC breed standards. Both parents should be the right height and color. They should have a muscular morphology and the proper head shape. Breeders who are able to trace the ancestry of a litter over several generations and document that all the ancestors are purebred GSDs will charge more. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings and should be happy to let you meet at least the mother if not the sire as well of the German Shepherd Dog puppies. The breeder should want to know how much experience you have with herding breeds, what your training plans are and your plans for exercising the dog. Ask if the breeder will take the German Shepherd puppy—or adult dog—back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. German Shepherd breeders may adopt out of the area but, nonetheless, you will want to go to the breeder to meet the parents, view the kennels and bring home your puppy in person. This will add to your expenses—but breeders that transport a puppy by air are putting the dog at risk. If you want to buy a German Shepherd Dog from an online breeder, please think again.
