For some they can break out in red marks but not feel irritated. For others, flea bites can cause allergic reactions which will have your dog breaking out in irritable bumps and welts depending on the severity, which will cause your dog to nip and scratch and bite themselves for relief. There are also cases of fleas transmitting more severe ailments such as tapeworms. If your dog exhibits itchiness, irritableness, or is throwing up their food a lot, take them to the vet to get checked out immediately. Other methods include flea belts, sprays and powders. Also remember to use a spray on your home surfaces and carpets to kills any eggs and larvae that might be hanging around. Seek further advice from your vet on other potential methods for tick and flea prevention. Ticks are most commonly contracted when taking walks in dense woodland areas. They are parasites that dogs can fall victim too when walking through low bush lines and long grass. Skills, Training and Behaviour A puppy needs much more attention than a fully grown dog, and that goes doubly so for a Frenchie! Spend a lot of time with them, particularly during the first few days so that they can get used to you, ensure your pup is supervised all day, and encourage their good behaviour with positive reinforcement. It is advisable to start training as quickly as possible around 10 weeks old is a good place to start. Potty Training Teaching your dog not to do their business in the wrong place can take some patience and a lot of supervision. When it comes to training of any sort, it is better to start young to encourage good habits that they can take with them into adulthood. They definitely have the capability to pick up commands and practice good habits with a little guidance. A good potty training method would be to take your pup outside immediately after a meal. Taking your puppy out straight away will cement the idea that this is where they should be if they need to go. After a successful session, give them a treat to encourage good behaviour. Taking immediate action with treats and discipline is always the best course. Being in a new environment is stressful for a pup, be sure that everyone in the household understands to be gentle and quiet for the first few days so the new member of the family can learn the ropes and get to grips with its environment. Heavy supervision is advised at the dog park, in case any bigger dogs get a bit too playful with you puppy. This can help stave off aggression that dogs can have when meeting other dogs later in life. This is especially true when they get older and begin to lose the ability to hear and see well. But as a puppy, it is important that they understand that some space and separation is not going to kill them! Try building up to a separation with small exercises. Wait five minutes, and return. Repeat this exercise, extending the time each time until you get to about fifteen minutes. Eventually you should be able to venture outside alone without much trouble. Never return to your dog when they start barking for your attention because they will learn that this is a valid way to get you to return to them. Wait for a few minutes after they have finished barking, then return. Commands and rules that you set for your puppy should follow on into adulthood. Remember to show your Frenchie that you are the one who is control of a situation. Doing quick and easy supplement exercises can really help control this behaviour. When they are teething, when they are bored, scared, energised, annoyed. Spending time with your puppy will help you better gage their mood and in turn, help you better meet their needs. Make sure your house is stocked with toys for when your puppy is teething. If you see your puppy growling at other items in the house, immediately take the item away and give them one of their own toys. To help encourage them to stop growling at other objects, give them a treat immediately after accepting the toy. French Bulldogs commonly bark when there are guests and visitors. They are very cautious by nature and you may find that they frequently bark at strange sounds and are very alert and active if strangers come by. Try keeping them preoccupied with a chew toy when this happens. Aggression, on the other hand, is not to be tolerated under any circumstances. If you find your dog biting, whether its during play time or when they are frustrated or scared, you need to act quickly and set down a zero-tolerance environment. There may be a number of contributing factors as to why your dog is biting — their perception of their ranking in the household, the rowdiness of its immediate environment, or where your Frenchie is sleeping and eating. A French Bulldog has many folds in their skin, which means there are lots of nooks and crannies where dirt can get trapped. If these folds are not cleaned regularly they can easily develop an infection. Try using wet baby wipes or moist towels to achieve this. Alcohol-free baby wipes are meant for sensitive skin which many French Bulldogs have, especially as pups! Ears A part of the French Bulldog that usually gets missed out on the cleaning list, but should never be overlooked is their ears. Clean their ears once a week with ear ointment, and afterwards gently massage the outer ear for comfort. Most dogs dislike having their ears cleaned out and will have to get lots of cuddles later for how brave they were. Tail French Bulldogs have what is known as a tail pocket, which is basically a name for a stubby tail with a slight invert. Either way, it is an area on the French Bulldog that is prone to infection. I often have folks come to visit the pups when they are old enough, and our initial phone conversation s often take a little time so you can learn about me and my dogs, and so I can learn as much as I can about the type of dog that fits into your family. A laid-back dog might be better suited to a less active family, and a higher energy dog would be better suited to an active family. Why health testing? All my dogs are health tested prior to breeding. Health testing means so much more than just a vet check. It's testing in specific areas by board certified veterinarians to ensure my breeding dogs meet the standards expected of breeders under the GRCA Code of Ethics, a standard designed to ensure the entire breed is as healthy as possible, and that buyers get the most healthy pups possible. By testing for things like eye, cardiac, and joint issues and by DNA testing for several common genetic conditions common to golden retrievers, I can ensure I am doing all I can to produce healthy puppies that grow into long-lived, healthy dogs. I test for all the things the GRCA wants its breeders to test for, and do additional testing, as well. For example, all my current breeding animals get heart clearances by echocardiogram, not only by auscultation. While there is no way to guarantee nothing bad will ever happen, I want to do everything I can to reduce or in some cases even eliminate the risk. How do you choose to do a particular breeding? My dogs are purposefully bred, versatile golden retrievers. I have kept or co-own at least one dog from almost every breeding I have done. One of my goals with all of my breedings is to produce pups I would want to keep for myself, and that I will be proud to have in the various competition venues representing my kennel. I also want them to be much loved companion golden retrievers. To meet those goals, I need to produce long-lived, healthy, correct, versatile dogs that can do all the things a golden is supposed to be able to do. I look for health and longevity when picking a sire, and I look for dogs that are physically correct meet the breed standard , have the correct golden disposition, and will be a good match for my girls. Many of the sires of my litters have produced well in the past, which is a good indicator of what they'll produce with my girls. For some breedings, I am looking for dogs with certain skills or capabilities prominent in the pedigrees. In others I am looking to improve upon what I have, to better some area I feel could be improved in my dogs on the whole. I am also careful not to lose the features I particularly like and that are correct in my dogs. I spend many, many hours reviewing pedigrees, observing dogs and talking to breeders and owners about their dogs, as well as others who may be familiar with their pedigrees from before I started watching those things. For the time being, you won't be able to meet both parents here at my home when you visit. My dogs are all related too closely to breed them to each other. In fact, I have done breedings with long deceased sires, choosing to use their frozen semen because they are very well known quantities; they have adult pups out there that help me evaluate what the sire will bring to a breeding, and I have life-long health and longevity information on both the sire and his other offspring. In other cases, I have had semen shipped from the far reaches of the country. This capability gives me the opportunity to expand the gene pool I use in my breedings, and I can search out the healthiest and best matches for my girls. I also have done local breedings by live cover, but it is a great benefit not to be limited by access to only local boys. What will our relationship be after one of your pups comes home with me? I usually set up closed Facebook groups for each litter so puppy buyers can stay in touch with each other, ask questions of me or each other, and so folks can share pictures, triumphs, and news. I have found it a great way to stay in touch, but not everyone is on Facebook, and those who are may not be frequent Facebook users. Be assured I am always accessible to answer your questions, and will always be happy to take your dog back and find him or her a great new home in the event you are no longer able to care for your pup due to health, personal, financial, or any other reasons. None of my dogs need ever become rescue dogs. I love these pups from a time before they are even born, and will always do what is best for them. I even have buyers that have put it in their wills that their dogs come back to me when the time comes, because they know I will put the dogs first. What are your requirements in terms of spay or neuter? For a good number of years, peer reviewed studies and vets and breeders whom I trust have agreed that early spay or neuter is very dangerous to the short- and long-term health of dogs. Everything from orthopedic issues, cancers, and fear of storms can be blamed in part on early spay and neuter. At the very least, I want my dogs to remain intact not spayed or neutered for long enough for the hormones to do their job getting the pups' bones and bodies to maturity. For girls, they should remain intact for at least two heat cycles, and for boys ideally until at least 2 years. I can tell you my boys do not reach full physical maturity until around three, so for their bones, joints, and skulls and other things less obvious to fully mature, I'd prefer they not be neutered ever, but at least not until they are three. Neutering a dog does not affect his instinct to mark. Training affects that. Neutering does not affect his instinct to mount other dogs as a dominance play. Training does. Neutering an aggressive dog does not alleviate his aggressiveness. Neutering a dog does greatly increase his risk of cancers common in goldens. You can often identify a dog spayed or neutered young by its disproportionately long, gangly legs. Those growth plates in the legs were still open when the hormones were removed from the dog, and growth no longer could continue in a balanced way. Buyers are often looking for good bone and big heads on their goldens, particularly the boys. Those things come with maturity while the hormones are intact. What is your guidance on vaccination? My general rule is to keep vaccinations to a minimum. I am not an antivaxer; vaccinations are vital to our dogs' health. For example, without vaccination, parvo kills puppies. I know breeders and dog owners who have lost puppies to parvo. These diseases we vaccinate against are serious. However, I believe in limiting vaccinations to the ones required, at the frequency required. My puppies will have their first round of puppy vaccinations before they go to their homes. After that, vaccinations need only be done if the dog needs additional protection. Titer testing will tell you if that is the case. My foundation bitch received puppy shots and then no further vaccinations other than periodic 3-year rabies as required by law where I live. At her senior physical at age 9, she was found by titer testing to still be fully protected against those things she was vaccinated against as a pup. Research what vaccinations are recommended where you live. Leptospirosis is common in some areas, very rare in others. The various dog influenza vaccines do not protect against all strains of flu, do not last long, and are not fully effective. Balancing the risk of infection essentially a contagious cough unless the infected dog has underlying conditions that make it hard to fight the infection against the effectiveness of the vaccine, consider if it is really worth putting those chemicals into your dog's body. Bordetella kennel cough vaccination is required by some boarding facilities, so you may feel forced to get that. However, it also does not protect against all strains, is not fully effective, and does not last long. I do not vaccinate for Bordetella. It is a cough that lasts several days, and can be treated if it is bacterial. In addition, I recommend vaccinating smartly - the fewer vaccinations given at a time, the less risk for complications. Vaccinating a dog weakened by some other condition or illness, for example an infection, can also lead to complications or reactions. Don't let a vet pressure you into doing anything unsafe for your dog. Your puppy can't advocate for him- or herself, and needs you to look out for him or her. This girl is currently super scared of new things and will need a lot of work to grow her confidence. Willow is a 2 year old, female Golden Retriever. She weighs 59 Pounds but looks way smaller and compact. She will be spayed, vaccinated and microchipped as part of her adoption. She is thankfully Heartworm negative. Willow does have a serious medical issue. She has a higher level heart murmur. She will need a family that can afford cardiology visits and likely medication for life. This is not fixable, it is something that needs to be managed throughout her life. Currently you would never know there is anything wrong with her health. If you do not have serious funding for vet care please do not apply to adopt her. She needs a home capable of supporting her through this for life. She is very shy at first and startles easily with loud noises. If you give her a few hours she becomes your shadow. She loves to cuddle up with you and get all the pets. She is doing great with other dogs and another confident dog in the house really helps her. We do not know how she would do with cats. She is not fostered with kids but did great at the vet with children loving on her. She does need the kids to give her space for the first few days while she adjusts. Willow is doing great with her training so far. Shes potty trained and crate trained. She will go in her crate on her own and relax if you leave the door open. Shes great in the car and does well on the leash. She has a medium energy level currently. When she settles in she gets more playful and excited but also has a lot of relaxed cuddle times. She loves you to be petting and touching her at all times. She likes running around the yard and is starting to play with toys. Due to her shy nature and her heart issues we are requiring a fenced yard for her. So far we have not seen any issues with her sharing food, treats or toys with other dogs or people. Goldens are just like other dogs. They need training, exercise and socialization. There seems to be a false narrative that they are instantly easy perfect dogs and that is just not true. Every dog needs their owner to support them with the things listed above. They also typically have a high energy level until they get a little older. Proper exercise is crucial. Shes overall a very sweet and gentle girl with so much potential. Please only apply if you meet all the requirements and can provide her the life she deserves.

Goldendoodles are more than capable of learning new tricks, so pick a trick and spend the day teaching them to do it! It might sound goofy, but rolling around on the floor with your Goldendoodle is actually an awesome way to get them to exercise! Littermates will wrestle with each other all the time, so your puppy will naturally want to play around with you. Just be careful to show them where the limits are with nipping. A senior Goldendoodle might be less keen for the rough and tumble. Play with toys. Grab a rope toy and play tug-of-war , throw a stuffed toy down the hall for them to run after, or toss a ball in the air for them to catch! Not only is your doodle puppy getting exercise, so are you! This can lead to problems with their joints, digestive system, heart, and blood sugar. It can also make genetic conditions like hip dysplasia more intense or painful. That being said, getting too much exercise can wear on their joints as well. It might cause a thinning of the cartilage around the joint that might lead to arthritis or pain. Goldendoodles are also prone to genetic conditions. Hip dysplasia, again, is a major one, which can be worsened by excessive movement and hard impact landings. Make sure that as the Goldendoodle owner you take your pet in for regular checkups and caring for their joints as they age. An older Goldendoodle might enjoy the low-impact fun of going for a swim or a walk rather than running around like their younger counterparts love to do. If they do display any health problems, make sure to get them seen right away to prevent them from developing into anything serious. The solution to this is to vary the walks once or twice a week. If you have no other option but to go to the same few places every time, at least try and take a different route once in a while to break up the monotony. A good idea can be to bring a ball, or perhaps even a frisbee with you. And that brings us to the next section. But can you count on the opposite also being the case? The first dogs that were ever bred, were because humans needed something that was loyal and could work for them every day. The tasks these dogs were put on could be anything from being guard dogs to tracking or hunting dogs. But no matter what job they had, there was one thing all the dogs always had in common, they needed a purpose with their lives, and being able to do the tasks they were meant for, gave them a lot of pride and joy every day. And while most dog owners do a pretty good job of stimulating their dogs physically, the mental aspect of training is often overlooked. A lot of dog owners have the inaccurate idea that as long as their pup just gets their sleep, food, and physical exercise, they will end up having a happy and satisfied dog. Deep in the tules themselves, Quinn's dogs are in no position to mark the fall. Advertisement He calls them in, sets them up for the "blind," and, giving each of his three or maybe four black Labs a slightly different line, sends them one by one in search of the cripple. An artist by profession but a gifted writer as well, Quinn likens himself to an archer pulling arrows from his quiver--the last of which strikes the bull's-eye. When his dog comes up with the bird, the satisfaction is profound. And, in that luminous moment, Quinn's lingering demons are exorcised. Ness, you see, had also traveled halfway across the continent to a field trial, this one in Maine, only to have his dogs--cocker spaniels that are normally in the thick of the fight--come to utter ruin. He'd pulled in to his Oahe Kennels in Menoken near Bismarck late the night before; after stopping by the guest lodge where he houses visiting "sports" just long enough to say hello to John McMahon and me and cut the dust with a cold one , he toddled off to bed. In The Field Now, less than 72 hours after their field trial debacle, Ness and his dogs are putting on a world-class show--to the detriment of the local sharp-tailed grouse population. He's running a brace of cockers, bouncy, honey-blonde Shelby and jet-black, jet-propelled Cassie; a diligent young black Lab, Bramble, that he brought back from a recent trip to the UK; and Murphy, a handsome and stylish Irish setter that he's polishing up for a client. The September sun is high, and with the temperatures climbing above 80 degrees, the sharptails are hunkered in the thickets and windbreaks, seeking shade. It's a perfect scenario for the flushing dogs, and while the rest of the pack walk obediently at heel, the dog Ness "taps"--simply by calling its name--works the cover. In point of fact, the cockers don't work the cover so much as they shred it. You half-expect the grass to catch fire in their wake. They also display perfect manners at flush and shot "Why couldn't you do that in Maine, you [bleep]? Topping a rise, we come to a gently sloping hillside that frames the golden stubblefield below. I circle around, giving the thicket a wide berth, and when I'm in position Ness says, "Cassie. When the black cocker hits the bush it literally seems to explode, to disintegrate and fly apart; grinding hard to process this contradictory information, my brain finally sorts it out. They're swarming out of the thicket like mutant bees, the roar of their wings and their chalk-on-slate chittering adding to the sensory overload. Somehow, though, I regroup in time to make a couple decent swings with my vintage Fox 16 and leave the covey two birds lighter. The way those birds came out of there--man! I felt like I was shooting in self-defense. The dog work, in particular, had been extraordinary. Most of us have our hands full handling one dog in the field; Ness handled four, and made it look easy. This is the kind of thing you read about--at least if you read people like the iconoclastic British gun dog authority Keith Erlandson "He's quite mad, you know," another Brit once told me --but never expect to experience in the flesh. Unless you hunt with Tom Ness, that is. Although a native-born son of the Great Plains--he grew up in Grand Forks in a family of boxers he fought in the amateur ranks himself and cribbage players, and worked as an oil shale geologist in Colorado before turning pro--his approach to dog training is emphatically British. You'll look in vain for an electronic collar "I had one," Ness'll tell you, "but it broke" ; when a cocker commits an infraction he runs it down, picks it up, and bites its ear to get his point across. That's not a training technique he learned on this side of the pond, I assure you. No, the trainers Ness has taken his cues from are the cranky, colorful Brits like Erlandson and Cyril Gwnne, whose Wernffrwd Kennels are comparatively little-known in America but legendary in the UK. Like them, Ness is keenly observant, shrewdly perceptive, and utterly his own man. Like them, too, he's outspoken to a fault: At a springer trial he judged not long ago, he told the crowd assembled for the announcement of the placements that while the first place dog was deserving, the rest of the field basically stunk. You could have heard a pin drop, except for the sound of jaws dropping. His judging calendar opened up considerably after that. With Tom Ness, what you see is what you get--but for all his Anglophilia, one thing you will never see is Ness affecting the British fashion and donning tweeds, Wellies, and a grouse helmet. Frankly, his wardrobe could stand some improvement; when I saw the ratty, threadbare vest he was wearing at the National Cocker Championship a few year ago, I was so appalled I called Filson ASAP and ordered him a new one. The last two dogs, both owned by Hobson Brown, finished numbers one and two, respectively, in the high point standings. The cockers that win field trials are just the best trained and classiest of the bunch. They're the same dogs you'd want to hunt with. Another contention of Ness's that I tend to agree with is that the overall quality of cockers in this country--hunting cockers, I mean--is higher than that of any other gun dog breed. Whenever I get a call from someone who wants me to train a Lab that's out of American field trial bloodlines, I cringe. British Labs have all the desire to hunt and retrieve that you'd ever want in a gun dog, and they're so much calmer and more biddable. It's just about gotten to the point where they're the only Labs I'll take for training. The Obedience Factor Not surprisingly, Ness is a firm believer in starting with a heavy dose of obedience training, then using that foundation as a platform for the transition to the field. Again, it's the typical British approach--and degrees opposed to what most Americans do, which is to start killing birds over their dogs as soon as possible, and in the process not only allow but encourage them to chase at flush and shot. It's totally backwards. But their dogs are trained perfectly. Two of Tom Ness's "students" gives their teacher their full attention. When we were in the UK Cyril Gwynne had just been to his first field trial in nine years--and his dog had won it.
