My love for boxers started when I was very young and a family friend bred and raised them. I was raised around dogs all my life as my Mom showed Saint Bernards, but I never thought that I would get bit by the show bug. A very good friend of mine decided to show Bernese Mountain dogs 4 years ago and I went to watch her show a couple of times and thought, I would like to give it a try. Kelly was my support system, and helped me finish my dogs with her words of encouragement, as I was always a nervous wreck. I have met a great new network of people in the dog show world, many who have given me support, encouragement, and helpful hints in and outside of the ring. We knew even getting a diagnosis for Harley would be beyond our means, let alone the cost of his care and treatment after the diagnosis. Once Harley was in our care and we saw his fighting spirit, his battle became ours. Harley is such a trooper, with such an incredible spirit he deserved a chance to live. After diagnostics and a MRI Harley appeared to have had a hemorrhage in his spinal cord that caused a clot and burst. With aggressive and intensive physiotherapy the vets are cautiously optimistic that Harley will overcome his paralysis and go on to lead a normal life. Harley is no longer with us but in his honor we continue our fundraising efforts in order to help other the other boxers that find their way to Boxer Rescue Canada. Certainly for my first dog he's 5 now that was the mainstream approach but more recently I'm seeing a lot more advice from behaviourists and trainers to be with your dog until they have the confidence to settle on their own. For some that's having the dog upstairs by the bed, for me this meant sleeping on the sofa close to my most recent puppy now approaching 2 until he was quiet at night. He wasn't very quiet at all as a young dog but I think I still only slept downstairs for a couple of weeks. Don't worry at all that you haven't done this at this point I only mention it as you may reconsider what you choose to do if he's noisy at night in the future. I posted a new thread yesterday "Ted. What to do at night? Do you have any links to any sites which go into detail about the new approach to overnighting with the puppy? Last night I decided to stay downstairs with Ted. I made up a bed opposite his crate in our kitchen diner, but before that made sure he's peed and pooed outside, and did some clicker work with him settling in the crate. So far so good. I closed the crate after leaving a kibble-filled Kong with him. I also left a dimmed lamp on. He started on the Kong and I settled down to "sleep". He actually made very short work of the kibble lesson for next time - use some treat he has to work to reach! Almost immediately he started whining. I was determined this time that my wife would sleep through the night, so where I probably normally have ignored him, I sat up and did some more clicker work to quieten him down. I'll probably hear, when my wife gets up, that the sound of the clicker kept her awake! This worked for a bit, then he started again. That's how it went off and on for much of the night. Neither man nor dog got much sleep. At no time though was Ted anywhere near as loud and distressed as the night before. He was clearly not happy being in a closed crate and made a bid to chew away the fastener! This time I sat up and in an urgent whisper kept repeating "down" with no clicker, just "good boy" He eventually settled with one or two blips, each dealt with the same way. I let him out at 5 and he's peed and pooed outside already, and run about like a demented thing, with chewy toys. He then went to sleep in the open crate for a while, and he is now snoozing at my feet. My question is this: How do I answer my nagging doubt that I'm creating problems for myself? This type of howling will often be accompanied by other things such as destruction, pacing or other signs of distress. In the case of your Labrador, the howling could be to alert others of its location such as when it hears sirens. It could also be to warn others not to enter its territory. Environment The reason why your Labrador howls could be that it is in response to something in its environment. If it hears things such as other dogs howling , sirens or other high pitched noises then it will likely cause it to start howling in response. Boredom It could be that the Labrador is howling due to boredom. Labradors were bred to be a very active breed and it takes a lot to properly stimulate them. If your Labrador becomes overly anxious when you leave or at the sight of you preparing to leave then it could be a case of separation anxiety. Other cues could be that it becomes destructive when you are away, it could be depressed or it might pace up and down when it thinks that you could be leaving. Lots of exercise with the dog. Instead, you should consider a systematic desensitization and counterconditioning program that is designed to solve emotional related issues. Desensitization is where the Labrador is guided to become less sensitive to the sounds and to reduce its physical and emotional response.
