Meet Rachael, my Beautiful Brown Lab All Labradors are beautiful, of course, but brown Labradors will always hold a special place in my heart. In fact, I am unashamedly biased! You see, I am lucky enough to share my life with Rachael. A female chocolate retriever from a mixture of American and English Lab lines. This is Rachael as a puppy. This page is a celebration of what is for me, one of the most beautiful dogs in the world. Rachael has been a huge source of inspiration for this website, so this is a little tribute to her and a thank you for all she has taught me. Where do Chocolate Labs come from? But they had been around for some years before that. The Labrador breed was developed mainly by a couple of English aristocrats in the s, from dogs they had imported from North America. Although our early Labrador Retrievers were predominantly black, some of these original dogs carried the genetic information required to produce chocolate puppies. Just as some also carried the information required to produce yellow puppies. If mainly black dogs were bred from, you may wonder how a brown puppy was ever born! To understand that, we need to take a peep at the genes that carry the code for coat color in the Labrador retriever. How is the Chocolate Color Inherited in Labradors? The instructions that tell your dog what to look like, and what color to be, come packed in genes. And genes come in pairs. This is true for the gene that determines whether or not the Labrador will be brown this gene is called b or black B. Every Labrador has either two genes for a black coat BB or two genes for a brown coat bb or one of each Bb. The color black in Labradors is dominant. That means that if a Labrador has one gene for the color brown, and one gene for the color black, the dog will be black. This is because his black gene switches off the brown one. By the s and 30s a few brown or liver Labradors as they were then called were making an appearance on the shooting field. But for some years more, brown was not widely acceptable to Labrador enthusiasts. Chocolate Labs are loving dogs, full of warmth and enthusiasm That preference continues today, and we still often name our brown Labs after favorite snack bars and chocolate flavored drinks! The s was a turning point in the popularity of the chocolate Lab, but interest grew slowly at first. Gradually, the public began to demand more chocolate Lab puppies, and gradually breeders began to produce them. Over the next few decades, Chocolate Labradors became increasingly popular both in the show ring and as pets. In the shooting community, where Labradors were expected to do a job of work, the preference for black continued. This continued throughout the late s, and into the present day, particularly in the UK. American Chocolate Lab American chocolate Labradors were bred to work, and are also known as field Labradors. The chocolate Lab has now become more established in the working community, but they are harder to find. There is a rumour going around that this is because brown Labradors are a bit stupid! But is it true? You might also have noticed that chocolate Labs are rarely seen as seeing eye dogs. Chocolate Lab Characteristics Just like you and me, every dog is a product of both his environment. As well as the genes he is born with. We have seen that many chocolate Labradors come from show Labrador lines, and these bloodlines tend to have certain characteristics in common. Characteristics that are passed along from parent to puppy. Chocolate Lab size varies quite a bit. Show Labradors English are often more heavily built, and somewhat slower and physically less agile than their field bred counterparts. Some English brown Labs may reach 80 or 90lbs without being fat or overweight. Whereas American chocolate Labs are often lighter. My Rachael, for example, weighs less than 60lbs. Most males of her build will weigh five or ten pounds more. English chocolate Labs are also more likely to have a chunky Labrador head and thick otter tail. And while some feel that the chunkiness of the skull has been taken too far in show lines, there is no denying the beauty of a classic Labrador head. A brown Labrador is more likely to be from these show types of bloodline and are therefore more likely to share these general characteristics. But there is more. Chocolate Lab Temperament American Labs may have a more intense retrieve drive, or urge to chase and retrieve things than their show bred cousins. In short, they are desperate to please. Over many generations this biddable quality has been bred into our working Labs alongside their retrieving and hunting prowess. This has given working dogs a rather different temperament from our show stock. Chocolate Lab Intelligence In show dogs you may see a more robust temperament. An English chocolate Lab is often less concerned over the little ups and downs of life. Nothing is taken too seriously. Many English chocolate Lab owners report that their dogs are especially playful. And I have certainly found that to be the case with Rachael. She adores soft toys and spends hours playing with her Flat Squirrel! However, they may less distractible, more focused and therefore easier to train. This can certainly give the impression of a dog that is pretty smart. These dogs may also be more likely to be black. English Labs are still highly intelligent, highly trainable dogs. The differences between field and show might give you the edge in competition. They are also becoming increasingly irrelevant as we switch to more modern methods of training which are much better at motivating dogs to engage in the training process. We mentioned earlier that the color black has long been favoured by the working retriever community. Experienced, working gundog enthusiasts are less likely to buy a puppy that is not from working lines, and when they do, they are more likely to choose a black dog. Unsurprisingly this means that most working lines of Labs are predominantly black. Black is also a great color for a hunting companion. A yellow dog really stands out in the countryside, even in poor light, so even when yellow dogs became more common, they were not so popular with the hunter. Brown dogs are better camouflaged but became more numerous much later and were embraced first by the pet and show communities. Are Chocolate Labs Stupid? To my knowledge, no study has ever been carried out on the differing intellectual abilities of Labrador of different colors. Everything you hear is based on personal anecdotal stories, often passed along in fun. At least to begin with! She has very intense retrieve drive, but is less naturally keen to share the outcome with anyone. She is also easily distracted and because of this she has taken me a little longer to train than my working line Labs. But it is most unlikely that there is any distinct difference in intelligence between dogs of the same breed that happen to be a different color. Being chocolate does not make a dog stupid Even if there were a difference in learning ability between different colored dogs, it does not mean that one caused the other. The answer lies in the behavior and temperament of dogs from different bloodlines. Types of chocolate Labs The difference in trainability is in short a feature of the difference between the field bred dog and the show bred dog. Not a feature of the color of the dog. It is a coincidence that many chocolate Labradors are English in type, and many black Labs are American in type. Because of this coincidence the characteristics of the show bred Lab tend to be attributed to our brown friends. While the characteristics of the field bred Lab tend to be attributed to our black dogs. So you can see how the myth got started. The fact is, that chocolate Labs from working lines are just as easy to train as black Labs from working lines. But you are less likely to meet a chocolate Lab from working lines at the moment. But rest assured, your chocolate friend is not stupid. With modern training methods you can easily teach him to be a well behaved and obedient dog. Chocolate Labrador Shades Unlike our yellow Labradors — which come in a wide range of shades, the color chocolate is pretty consistent in puppyhood. Most chocolate Labs are quite similar in color. As the old hair dies it starts to lose some of its color, and the dead hair is much paler than the glossy new coat that will soon appear. And though some chocolate Labs are darker than others, even when taking the stage of moult into account, variations between individuals are fairly small, with one very contentious exception. The Silver Labrador. Silver Labs Are Chocolate Labs Silver Labradors have a gene which dilutes the color chocolate and makes it a pale, silvery shade. Some people find this very attractive, while others regard it as an abomination. There is no doubt that a hundred years ago, there was no coat dilution gene in our Labrador Retrievers. We know for sure that this gene has appeared quite recently. The strongest theory is that the gene arrived through cross breeding a Labrador with a dog that carries the dilute coat color gene. A breed such as the Weimaraner for example. This seems rather less likely. Not as silver itself. A bright Future for the Chocolate Lab Throughout history, there have been a number of famous black Labradors, and we tend to associate yellow Labs with the all important role of working as assistance dogs. This is not because chocolate Lab dogs lack the qualities or abilities of black and yellow dogs, but simply because the popularity of the color is a relatively recent phenomenon. There are as we speak, plenty of chocolate Labradors serving in the military, working as assistance dogs and in the shooting field. Maybe you have a story to tell about your own chocolate friend, or maybe you are just starting out on your journey to finding a chocolate Lab to share your life. We have some tips for searching in the right places. The other way, is to buy a chocolate Lab puppy and raise him yourself. And avoiding puppy mills and pet stores. If you want a puppy for hunting, you need to go to a breeder that specialises in field-bred dogs. If you want to get involved in the world of showing, you need to go to a breeder that breeds Labradors for the show ring. It is possible to train a show dog for work, though he or she is unlikely to get far in high level field competitions. It is not normally possible to succeed in the show ring with a field bred dog. Keep this in mind. Chocolate Labrador Puppy Health Labradors of all colors suffer from inherited disorders. Please, please make sure your puppy is from health tested parents — it may all end in tears if you omit this important step. Their parents should have good hip scores, good elbow scores, clear eye tests and be PRA clear too. But does picking a chocolate Lab puppy set you off on the wrong foot in terms of health from the start? Are Chocolate Labs Unhealthy? In a study hit the headlines hard, and had a lot of chocolate Lab owners in a panic. Their research suggested that there is a link between Lab color and not just health, but lifespan too. Over 33, Labs were studies, with .Giving a good sample size. Chocolate Labs in the study were more likely to have dermatitis, which matches with some colloquial findings of owners of silver Labs with skin problems. Ear problems are also more common, and this is in fact something Rachael has even suffered with in the past. Gastrointestinal issues were more common with chocolate Labradors too. Chocolate Labradors live on average for just .At least according to this study. Interestingly, they were least likely to have degenerative joint disease or dental problems. It reduces the chances of your pup becoming ill. But it is also important to look at the coefficient of inbreeding. Chocolate Labs get their color from a recessive gene. This means that to ensure you have a litter of chocolate puppies you need to breed from two chocolate parents. Reducing gene pools will always increase health problems. Finding a puppy with a very low coefficient of inbreeding will help you to avoid some of these problems. In addition to health testing, of course. It would also be sensible to avoid a chocolate Lab puppy with parents with a history of ear or skin problems. Then to follow a good positive reinforcement training programme. Make sure you exercise his mind as well as his body. Even if you never intend to take him hunting, he still needs a job to do, retrieves to complete, toys to find, streams to cross and so on. If your dog is from show lines, he too needs training and plenty of exercise, but he may also need plenty of play. Toys and games, and other dogs to interact with. Training my Chocolate Lab Even at seven years old, Rachael still loves to play with other dogs and with people. She is hugely enthusiastic about meeting people and dogs and prone to be over-friendly. And I have to make a special effort to ensure that she is not allowed to interact with visitors until she is sitting calmly. On the plus side, I have had to spend less time socialising Rachael than I would with a field bred lab. As she takes everything in her stride. Too friendly! You may find she is intensely friendly and rather distractible, so this aspect of his education is important. Above all, treat your chocolate labrador like an individual. He is far more than just a product of his breeding and environment. He is a unique character, there will never be another quite like him Caring for an old Chocolate Lab As the years pass by, we leave behind one set of challenges and they are replaced by new ones. Failing eyesight, stiff joints, and declining hearing. However, these senior years can still be happy and fun filled for many dogs, especially if you keep your dog slim. The difference between a dog that is smaller than breed standard and a Boxer dog that actually has dwarfism, is that not only will the size of the dog be affected, but the proportion of the dog as well. This is rare with the Boxer breed and is more common with breeds including the German shepherds, Basset Hound, Beagles and others. A Boxer dog with dwarfism will not grow at the proper rate and proportion. The dog will generally be much smaller in size than the other dogs in its litter. Treatment Options Studies have been done to see if the growth hormone that is give to humans would work with dogs. This has had very limited and varying success. For those who wish to try this treatment should be aware that it is very expensive and there are no guarantees. Surgery has been performed on some dogs to attempt to resolve issues with bone deformities; though results are not usually very successful. Dogs that are experiencing pain from misshapen bones may need to be given anti-inflammatory and pain relieving medications. Some people are crossing a Boxer with a Boston Terrier and calling the dog a Miniature Boxer; when in fact the dog is a crossbreed. Even stranger than that, some are crossing a Rat Terrier with a Pug and for some reason calling that dog a Miniature Boxer though some do call it a Puggat In regard to a purebred Boxer dog , there is no such thing as a purebred Miniature Boxer. There is no reason for a legitimate breeder to purposefully try and create dogs that are smaller than the standard. Since buyers do want Boxers that fit the breed standard, it would not be logical to pair together 2 smaller-than-average Boxers in order to produce smaller-than-average puppies. So while you may see advertisements or hear about Miniature Boxers, there is no such thing and of course, this dog is not -and never would be- recognized by any legitimate Kennel Club. It is only the American Canine Hybrid Club and its counterparts in other countries that 'recognize' these 'designer' dogs. It just depends on what genes they get from what parent, Boxer or Boston Terrier. Due to their smaller size, Mini Boxers can be good apartment dogs. However, they do need a bit of exercise, so you will need to meet their exercise needs. Dwarf Boxer vs. While this gene is very rare in Boxers, it is possible. Usually, these Boxers have shorter legs than their larger family members. However, dwarfism can cause all sorts of health problems. It can cause bone deformities. On the other hand, miniature Boxers are bred by mixing a Boxer with a smaller dog. This results in a somewhat smaller dog that may or may not look like a Boxer. Their coat can vary somewhat depending on what traits they inherit. They will have short coats that will likely be very fine. Their fur will always be straight and smooth, as both of their parents have this coat type. They are typically black, fawn, or white. White is a bit less common than the other coat color options. Many of them have brindle coat markings. However, some of them are solidly colored. Temperament: Are Miniature Boxers good family dogs? They like family and people. Because of this, they are extremely good companion dogs. They are mostly purchased as companion dogs for this reason. They are also very gentle. They are good with children, even those who tend to be a bit rough. However, the smaller dogs can be a bit scared of children because they can be injured by smaller children easily. Socialization is important. Despite their loyalty, these dogs are not particularly prone to social isolation. They are typically fine with being left by themselves for moderate amounts of time. They are fine with most other animals, including cats. Some early socialization is recommended. However, they are usually very gentle with all animals. These dogs are typically very people-friendly. But, they can be a bit territorial around strangers in their home. With proper socialization, they are typically not aggressive. However, they can be a bit aloof. They are a good watchdog in some situations. Typically, these dogs are moderately easy to train and are quite intelligent. They are not particularly stubborn, either. How to take care of your Miniature Boxer Miniature Boxers are pretty easy to take care of and only require minimum care. They are somewhat intolerant to heat, so they should not be left outside during the hotter months. But like all dogs, they do need some exercise and some coat maintenance. They have high activity levels and need to be worn out daily. These are quite high energy. You will need to take them on moderate length walks preferably twice a day. Playtime outside can also be relatively helpful, especially if your yard is fenced-in. Dog parks and fenced back yards are a great option for these canines. This breed does tend to wander quite a bit. Because of this, you should not let them roam free. You should not exercise them in the heat, as they are prone to heatstroke. Instead, take them for walks early in the morning or late at night during the summer. Grooming: Do Miniature Boxers shed? They do shed a moderate amount. They are not hypoallergenic by any means. They require daily brushing to remove the dead hairs and help keep them clean. This will prevent the hairs from ending up all over your house. You should check their ears regularly for a build-up of debris. If there is dirt and wax build-up on the outside of the ears, you will need to clean them with a damp cotton ball. Dogs with floppy ears seem to have the biggest problem. Dental health is also very important. Regular exercise can help rub them down, but they will need to have them ground down regularly. Eye examinations should be done regularly as well, though your dog should not need their eyes cleaned often like some other breeds. You do not need to bathe your canine very often. They only need to be washed when they get physically dirty. Feeding: How much should a Miniature Boxer eat in a day? Because their size can range so widely, the amount of food your particular dog needs will vary. Generally, they need about 2 cups every day. However, this can vary a lot depending on their size. Because they are very active dogs, they will need a high-protein diet. This may cost a bit more, but it will help your canine keep the lean muscles they need to stay active. Is the Miniature Boxer healthy? Because it is a mixed breed, the Miniature Boxer is healthier than many of the other canines out there. However, it is prone to quite a few health conditions. This is largely because neither parent breed is super healthy. These dogs can be prone to bloating. This is a serious condition that involves the stomach twisting and filling up with gas. This requires surgery and can be life-threatening. They are also prone to hypothyroidism, which involves the dysfunction of the thyroid gland. Dogs with this condition will need life-long medication to replace the thyroid hormone. Cardiomyopathy is another serious condition, but this often is corrected through diet and medication. It can be life-threatening when not treated. Bigger Miniature Boxers may be prone to hip dysplasia. Proper nutrition into puppyhood is essential to prevent this. Overfeeding can cause the puppies to grow too fast, which can cause problems later on. For one reason or another, Boxers are also prone to cancer. If the Miniature Boxer has a shorter snout, they may also have breathing problems. These can range for minor to severe. This can cause issues related to heat, exercise tolerance, and even anesthesia complications. Epilepsy and heart problems are also common in Boston Terriers, so they may occur in Miniature Boxers as well. For dogs with lots of wrinkles, dermatitis may also be common. This occurs when the wrinkles rub against each other. As you might imagine, this can cause sores, which may get infected. Some heart problems are common in these dogs as well. They may develop dilated cardiomyopathy, though this condition is also linked to diet. Ensuring your canine gets enough protein-rich food can help prevent it. Subaortic stenosis and mitral valve dysplasia are both also common. They may develop Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which can cause blindness over time. There is no cure for this disease and it usually develops in both eyes. Canine glaucoma may also occur. For dogs with short noses, they will have Brachycephalic Syndrome. This can cause all sorts of problems with their breathing. The only treatment is a surgical correction, but these dogs are sensitive to surgery when they have this condition. It is only used in major conditions because of this. Patellar luxation involves the displacement of the kneecap. This may be common in smaller dogs. Allergies are common in these dogs, so we highly recommend changing their food often. Dogs become more sensitive to food as they eat it. By switching it often, you can avoid them becoming sensitive to a particular protein. These dos are also somewhat prone to these conditions: Demodicosis. But in a smaller frame. Miniature Boxer dogs appeal to people who love the full-sized breed, but perhaps lack the space to house one. The three main ways of creating a miniature Boxer are: a mixed breed, introducing the dwarfism gene, and breeding from runts. But, these methods of creating smaller versions of popular breeds can have unwanted side effects on their health. Your Miniature Boxer The Boxer is a beloved dog breed in many households around the world. It is prized for its famous looks and enthusiastic behaviors. Breeders simply intend the mini Boxer to be a smaller version of the full-sized dog we know and love. But, smaller Boxer, or Boxer-like, dogs can be achieved by out-crossing with smaller breed. Breeders do this by deliberately introducing the genes for dwarfism from another breed. Alternatively, they selectively breed from several generations of runts from purebred Boxer litters. This is small compared to a 70lb full grown male Boxer. With small snouts, round faces, and large eyes. But, their strength and agility is nothing to mess with. It is not for the faint of heart. But they are sometimes challenging to control. They take up a lot of space at home and on the couch. And eat a lot of food too. Miniature Boxers are appealing because they hold the promise of being easier to manage, feed, and care for. Many miniature Boxers are mixtures of Boxers and other, smaller dogs. So, they are not strictly Boxers at all. They could possess characteristics of both parents. Not just the Boxer. This means there is no predicting whether your mixed breed miniature Boxer will have the Boxer-like traits you are looking for. The mix is likely to be much smaller than a purebred Boxer. The overall outline and facial features of a Boston and a Boxer are very similar. As a result the mix will likely still look like a small Boxer. But, Boston Terrier Boxer mix puppies are certain to have very flattened faces. Dogs with flat faces are very vulnerable to brachycephalic airway syndrome. This is where the structure of the skull makes it hard for dogs to breathe, and regulate their body temperature by panting. This issue is uncomfortable and miserable at best. But at worst it can be lethal in hot weather. Beagles rarely weigh more than about 22 pounds. So a Boxer Beagle mix is likely to be much smaller than a purebred Boxer. Beagles are popular dogs for families because they are good-natured and energetic. They are bred to be healthy working dogs. So, they are usually free from the conformational defects of the Boston Terrier. Beagles tend to make a lot of noise. As with Boxers, they need significant amounts of exercise. This high-maintenance mix is not for the faint of heart. But it might fit well with an active family who enjoys an outdoor lifestyle. Introducing the Dwarfism Gene Another way that miniature Boxers may be developed by breeders is through introducing genes for dwarfism. Dwarfism in dogs a hereditary condition known as achondroplasia. Affected dogs have disproportionately short limbs. This gives them a shorter stature. Achondroplasia is uncommon in Boxers. But it is a standard characteristic of other breeds, such as the Corgi. By refinement over several generations, later puppies might have a high proportion of Boxer ancestry but retain the short legs. But, this usually has serious implications. Health Implications A dog with dwarfism may have misshapen or under-developed bones. As well as other structural abnormalities. It can also cause a reduction in overall lifespan and quality of life. Introducing the dwarfism gene to a Boxer breeding line is not the most humane way of getting a miniature Boxer. Breeding From Runts A runt is the smallest member of a litter of puppies. Some runts are small but healthy. They may catch up in size with their littermates. Others are abnormally small. They can remain below the normal healthy weight range for their breed their whole life. Some breeders pursuing a miniature Boxer might mate two unusually small Boxers to create a litter of equally-tiny puppies. This is a method of shrinking the dog breed while maintaining the temperament and appearance of a Boxer. The Pitfalls Unfortunately, abnormally small puppies might also be the result of underlying congenital health issues. As newborns they are likely to have difficulty getting their fair share of milk from mom. This is linked to a weakened immune system in later life. Which can make them prone to issues in pregnancy and whelping. As with many dog breeds, the Boxer faces some a high prevalence of some hereditary health problems. Such as heart disease, degenerative myelopathy, and certain cancers. Recent generations have become increasingly brachycephalic as well. Increasing the risk of respiratory disorders. Miniature Boxers can be prone to these problems too. As well as the drawbacks of the process used to create them. The other parent should be a smaller, healthy breed with similar traits, like the Boxer Beagle. Visit the puppies and meet both of their parents before you commit to bringing one home. Ask to see where the puppies are living. They should be inside the home, clean, and warm. Both parents should clearly be loved pets, who know their name. Adopting a Miniature Boxer Alternatively, look into adopting a miniature Boxer. Many shelters receive their fair share of Boxer crosses. Including Boxers crossed with smaller breeds. And Boxers crossed with Corgis and other dwarf breeds. Or they were unable to keep up with their vet fees. Adoption fees tend to be less than those charged by a breeder. But a breeder will be able to give you specific information regarding the parents of your miniature Boxer. Your labrador retriever has a huge appetite. It loves to eat, so it may carry its food bowl around with them, beg for food, or eat unconventional things. This is normal. The exact quantity of food you give your lab depends on which food you're offering and how many calories it contains. Follow the feeding guidelines on the food packaging, and increase or decrease the amount depending on whether the dog loses or gains weight on this ration. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source If your dog is more active than most dogs, then you should increase its food intake accordingly. For instance, if every morning you and your furry friend go for a 5 mile 8 km jog together, you should consider giving it more food than usual. If you cannot easily feel its rib bones anymore, then you are probably overfeeding it. At the same time, you should not be able to see its rib bones from afar. Your lab will get very thirsty after exercise and will need to quench that thirst. It will drink more or less water depending on how active it has been and how hot it is outside. Do not limit your dog's water consumption. Unlike food, your dog will regulate itself. Dehydration can be fatal, so don't take any chances. You lab needs a lot of exercise in order to stay healthy. Walk your lab up to three times a day and if you can, take it on long walks of a couple miles or more. Go to source If you have a backyard, make sure that it is big enough for your dog to run around. Small backyards are not suitable for big dogs like labs. Whether your lab lives outside or inside, make sure that it has a space it can call its own. Include a large, durable dog bed. Your lab will paw at the bed constantly to get comfortable. Cheap beds will rip easily and can cause quite a mess. Giving your labrador its own bed will also help you train it to stay off of yours, if you are so inclined. Labradors are a short-haired breed that come in brown, black, and gold. For most of the year, your lab will remain fairly low maintenance. Brushing your lab will also help remove dirt and spread natural oils throughout. The natural oils in your lab's fur can even help fend off fleas and ticks. Go to source Bathe your lab 3 or 4 times a year or whenever its stench gets too strong. If you take your dog on frequent walks, the hard pavement will naturally file its nails down. You can trim them at home or have a vet do it. In general, you can train your lab to sit still to have its nails trimmed. Just offer it a treat after every successful trip to your at-home doggie nail salon. Eventually, your dog will welcome it. Human nail clippers won't work effectively. Secure your dog's foot in place and then quickly clip off the nail. Do not clip too close to the base of the nail. Doing so can be very painful and cause bleeding. Make sure that the nail does not curve back into the dog's paw or is too sharp to cause accidental damage. Your Labrador's ears can become breeding grounds for bacteria if not cleaned regularly and properly. Check the dog's ears regularly for any excessive or smelly discharge, and seek veterinary advice if you notice anything amiss. If you want to clean the ears, use a specific product designed for the purpose. The more active your lab is the more likely it'll have dental issues. Take your dog to the vet for teeth cleaning 1 or 2 times a year. Routine trips to your vet can also help combat terrible breath. Since you are on the receiving end of so many slobbery kisses, this issue has probably crossed your mind and therefore is just one more reason why you should have your lab's teeth cleaned. Several kinds of toothpaste are available, many of which come in tasty flavors - e. Introduce the brush into your dog's mouth gently. Use your fingers to lift your dog's lips in order to expose their teeth. Work the brush in circles and go from tooth to tooth. Its back teeth will be the most difficult to get to, so save them for last. Make sure that you brush both sides of each tooth. Reward you dog with a treat afterwards. Every dog needs certain core vaccinations on a regular basis. It is a good idea to take your dog to the vet at least twice a year for routine exams to monitor its health and to establish a good relationship with your veterinary staff. If your pet should get hurt or is not acting normally, it is always a good idea to visit the veterinarian for an exam and medical care if needed. Your vet will also prescribe necessary medicines topical and supplemental to help ward off parasites like fleas and ticks. If you want to feed your puppy a different food from what it has been eating, you will need to switch its food over the course of several days. Feed that mix for several days. Finally, you can give the puppy all new food. If you are content to give your puppy the food it was originally eating, it's fine to do that. Every puppy will have different nutritional needs. Because of this, it's a good idea to discuss proper nutrition with your vet. They can suggest great foods to give your puppy and how much it should be eating. Go to source The right portion size depends on the size of your puppy and its metabolism. Ask your vet to teach you how to body score your puppy. This will allow you to do a quick visual check to see whether your puppy is losing or gaining weight. Tip: If your vet suggests a specific food but doesn't tell you how much to give your puppy, follow the instructions on the packaging. Doing 3 or 4 feedings per day allows your puppy to get enough nutrients without overwhelming its digestive system with a huge amount of food at once. This is especially important when your puppy is under 6 months old, as they have delicate systems. Go to source Don't just leave the food out all day. Take the food away after the puppy eats for about 10 or 15 minutes. Lab puppies should always have access to fresh water so that they can stay adequately hydrated. Put out a dish of water and dump it out, clean the dish, and refill it daily. Some puppies are really messy with their water dishes. To prevent a mess, try putting the water dish on a tray, so that spilled water won't go right onto the floor. Getting dried off Our guide to bathing and grooming your Labrador will help you to keep your dog clean and fresh, without the fuss. Sit your dog in front of you, outdoors if they are shedding a lot. Have a pot of treats next to you and pass them one every few seconds if they are nervous or reluctant to stay put. I usually begin at the base of their body near the tail. Make short gentle pulls downwards with the brush, and after each groom pick out the loose fur that the brush has collected and set it down next to you to dispose of later. Work your way slowly up the body and around their flanks, stopping at the neck as you reach their head. They usually have a handle strap on the back and if you find one that fits your hand comfortably they are great. For a more intensive brushing I use a slicker brush. The slicker brush gets right into the coat and does a good job of removing dead hair on a daily basis. However, sometimes the dead hair situation calls for a more assertive tool! An ordinary brush quickly gets clogged with dead hair and you will struggle to make much progress without a special tool for loosening dead hair. You can also buy a useful tool made by Kong. It is a great way to loosen the dead hair so that it falls away easily. Somewhat more controversial, are special rakes with a blade incorporated. These shedding tools can be very effective if used with care. Because Labs might be gorgeous, adorable friends. But they are also rather mucky pups. There are Labradors that are bathed every week, and other Labradors that are almost never bathed. I tend to bathe my Labs when they get a bit smelly, or if they have rolled in something unpleasant. Something which many dogs have a huge enthusiasm for! Dead animals, and fox poo, are some of their favorites. Labradors also love mud. They will go out of their way to find some, especially if you have just bathed them, or had new carpets fitted. Paddling around in muddy puddles and the edges of boggy ponds can result in a filthy and smelly coat, again a hose down may be sufficient. Dog Bathing Schedule Bathing as and when they need it is absolutely fine for most Labs. But if you want to have a routine then once a month is a nice easy schedule for most people to remember. It is a little different with puppies however. If you want to give your puppy a bath, by all means do so. It is not a good idea to shampoo your older Labrador regularly unless you really need to. Especially in the winter. This is because the shampoo strips out the natural oils and reduces the waterproofing and cold repellent qualities of his double coat. Best Shampoo For Dogs I have used a variety of shampoos on my dogs. The main thing is to avoid shampoos intended for human adults. Your alternative option is to make your own shampoo. You can do this in nice weather, outside in the backyard too. Have a couple of large towels ready before you begin. Use a glob the size of a coin, and rub with your fingers working it into the coat. Especially where he is mucky. Then hose her down and repeat. Work up into a good lather and rinse very thoroughly. Remember that dogs lick their coats so thorough rinsing is particularly important. Lay a few towels on the floor to walk him to the bath room, and lift him into the tub. Use a shower nozel to rinse and wash just as you would in the back yard. The first milk they receive is a protein and antibody-rich type of milk known as colostrum. This gives the puppy's immune and central nervous systems a boost. They then progress on to regular breast milk. Puppies will nurse for at least 6 to 8 weeks, gradually being weaned on to solid food at about 4 weeks. If, for any reason, the puppy cannot suckle its mother, don't give them cow or goat milk. These milks are very poor quality in comparison to a puppy's mother's milk. German Shepherd puppy diet: 1 month old From 3 to 4 weeks old, when it comes to feeding a German Shepherd puppy, we should start by letting them taste new foods and flavors. At this stage, the German Shepherd puppy's diet plan requires them to eat a special wet food for puppies. At around 6 to 8 weeks old, a German Shepherd puppy should be given a little dry dog food with water, or unseasoned chicken stock between nursing sessions. From their eighth week onward, a German Shepherd should be weaned and start feeding on solid food with a special puppy feed. This has to be carried out with one very important addition: discipline. A puppy needs to learn that it will not be fed constantly throughout the day, but at specific times. We start of by placing a bowl of food down for 10 minutes, this should give the puppy enough time to finish its meal. After 10 minutes, we suggest taking the bowl of food away, even if your puppy hasn't finished eating. A puppy's food bowl must only be available to the dog for 10 minutes. This 10 minutes should be enough time for the puppy to eat all of its provided food. As already mentioned, after 10 minutes, you should take the food bowl away, even if the puppy hasn't finished eating. This pattern will introduce the puppy's food schedule and allow it an opportunity to become accustomed to particular feeding times. The FDA recently issued a notice alerting dog owners to a potential increased risk of a serious heart condition. This is called canine dilated cardiomyopathy DCM. The risk is in dogs eating foods that include peas, lentils, or potatoes instead of grains. The underlying cause of these cases is not clear, but the FDA note suggests that caution should be used in selecting foods with these ingredients for German Shepherds and other large dogs. Canned Dog Food For picky eaters canned food can be more appealing. It smells stronger, and debatably tastes nicer. These diets do not include cooked or otherwise processed foods. However, it may be more difficult to regulate a BARF diet to ensure a slow and steady growth rate in young puppies. There is now abundant information available to anyone who is willing and able to produce a safe and balanced diet. My Puppy Is Still Hungry If your puppy seems excessively hungry provide more frequent but smaller meals. Young puppies cannot tolerate going without food for extended periods. With older puppies you may wish to experiment with foods that help them feel more full, and provide low calories treats. Keeping a health puppy active and occupied will help prevent them from becoming overly focused on anticipating their next meal. Puppy Feeding What should I feed my puppy? Diet is extremely important in the growing months of a dog's life and their two important criteria that should be met in selecting food for your puppy. The diet should be nutritionally adequate for puppies. The diet should have physical qualities texture,abrasiveness that will help control plaque and maintain oral health. We recommend a premium dry food puppy formula only available from vets or pet shops. The brands we use are Blackhawk or Advance puppy. We recommend to give this to your puppy in the mornings. It can be left in the bowl however, please keep in a safe spot away from birds as they love puppy food. We do not use or recommend supermarket dry food as they contain mainly cereal and very little meat. Moist food is usually given at night along with their vitamins. We recommend pet meat and not supermarket human grade mince. Liver is truly a miracle food for dogs, contributing many minerals and vitamins that other foods cannot match. A small amount mixed with mince times a week is recommended and on the alternate days add a small amount of either heart, brains or kidneys approx. Puppy Beef mince, kennel mince or a mix are great. Chicken wings or necks can also be used. All of the above must be given uncooked. Your pup will also need bones times a week We recommend meaty lamb necks. Please do not give your pup canned foods they will cause very loose stools and puppies do dehydrate very quickly. Your pup deserves the best you can afford and fresh food is a lot cheaper than canned food. There are now many companies on line that will deliver your weekly food to your door fresh. We also recommend fresh vegetables. Spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, corn sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash, carrots, mushrooms are very healthy for your pup. Please prepare them raw by grating your veges and adding this to your night time meal. One raw egg 4 - 5 times a week is also recommended. DO NOT feed your dog onions as they can be very toxic to a dog and can kill them. Feed your pup a wide variety of food. The only exercise allowed is play. Pups must spend most of their day outside in the fresh air on clean earth and grass in the sun with ample fresh water available. Give your pup heaps of raw meaty bones. Feed your pup mainly raw foods. Raise your pup with all the love you can give him. Vitamins; You will need to administer the following 2 items for at least 18 months but the fish oil has other qualities that will help them right throughout their life so you may want to continue with the fish oil. Dolomite Calcium Powder 2. Pernaease Powder Both of these need to be administered on a daily basis As your pup grows at a fairly fast rate he will need calcium and a range of vitamins and minerals. We use Dolomite Calcium Powder to help their bones grow strong and Pernaease Powder helps as a natural anti inflammatory. Garlic powder 1 tsp. Brown sugar or honey 6 tbs. Lightly oil a cookie sheet. Combine flour, dry milk, garlic powder and sugar. Cut in meat drippings until mixture resembles corn meal. Mix in egg. Add enough water so that mixture forms a ball. Cut dough into squares appropriate to your dog size. Prick each cookie with a fork. Bake 25 - 30 minutes. Remove from tray and cool on rack. Store in air tight container. Your dog will absouletely love these great bickkies! The best food for German Shepherd puppies in their first two to four months of life is milk from their mother. This specialised care is usually left to German Shepherd breeders or veterinarians, who are knowledgeable in caring for pups with no mother to nurse from. If you have recently brought a German Shepherd puppy into your family, they are most likely older than 8 weeks, and so have started to eat solid foods. Before the four month mark, it is advised to include some dry food in their diet. You can do this in a few simple steps: Mix some dry food with specially formulated puppy milk to form a soft mixture. You can feed your puppy this mixture three to four times a day. Over time, reduce the amount of milk you include in this mixture, until they are at the point where they are happily eating dry foods. The amount of food you give your German Shepherd is determined by their weight, energy levels, and age. For most adult German Shepherds, between 1, to 2, calories per day from high quality food sources is ideal. Female German Shepherds, which tend to be about 8 kilos lighter than males, may need less food, as will less active dogs. Dogs who need less food, whether they are less active or simply older, will usually still need around 1, and 1, per day. You may want to alter the amount of food you are feeding your German Shepherd based on how calorically dense their food is.
