Space Requirements This is a big dog who takes a long time to physically mature and so is not suited to flats accessed by stairs or homes without access to a secure garden. Town or country will be fine, but plenty of space to walk, train and run freely is advisable. They will guard and so a busy urban environment can be too stimulating for them. Nutrition and Feeding Large breed dogs, as well as having large appetites, benefit from a different balance of nutrients including minerals and vitamins compared to smaller-breed dogs. The defendants were found guilty of 32 charges brought under the Animal Welfare Act , and were sentenced today following a three-week Judge alone trial at the Manukau District Court in January. One of the defendants was sentenced to nine months' supervision and the other was sentenced to 12 months' supervision, hours community work and judicial monitoring. SPCA was contacted after concerns were raised about the welfare of many of the dogs housed at the breeding kennel the pair operated. When SPCA Inspectors first visited the large rural property, more than 60 dogs and puppies were discovered, many of which were tied up by short leashes and choker chains without access to water, shelter or behavioural enrichment. For those that were housed inside or in kennel runs, the ground where they lay was covered in urine and faeces. In one enclosure, there was such a buildup of faeces that the dogs were struggling to walk without skidding in their own filth. SPCA later returned to the property to seize other dogs and puppies, including two pregnant females — one of which was found locked in a dark, dirty shed inside a cargo crate. Inspectors agreed that the most concerning dog they seized was an adult German Shepherd found tangled in her tether inside a cage with no water. The short leash was twisted tightly around her hind leg, forcing it into an extremely uncomfortable position up near her head. She had been unable to move for so long that the leg was swollen and when Inspectors freed her, she was unable to bear any weight on it. Sadly, the tight tether had also caused a major skin infection. She was in so much pain, discomfort and distress, she had to be euthanised. Months later, SPCA received information about several distressed dogs barking at an isolated piece of bush at the back of a rural property owned by the defendant. When Inspectors arrived at the scene, they found six German Shepherds tethered to trees, several kilometres from the main dwelling. The dogs were seized by SPCA, including one with a skin infection and another with an ear infection. A veterinarian determined the ear infection was chronic, untreated, and would have been causing considerable pain and distress. SPCA National Inspectorate Manager Alan Wilson says the case highlights the need for better regulation of the breeding industry, to ensure breeders maintain appropriate animal welfare standards and are held accountable for any breaches to those standards. While many breeders do treat their animals well, there are others that continue to operate under the bare minimum animal welfare standards, and some far below this. Some bitches can get a little possessive with their babies and you may have to see her away from her pups. The puppies father will probably be owned by someone else and could even be in the North Island or Australia as is sometimes the case. Stud dog owners are more than happy to talk to you about their dog and for you to view the dog. Also take note of the breeders other dogs, how they behave and react. There could be other offspring from previous litters for you to look at and this gives you a good indication of what the mother can produce. The German Shepherd Dog is prone to hip displaysia and by responsible breeders hip x-raying and only using stock with good hips, the incidence of hip displaysia has been reduced. The puppies tattoo number is unique and is used to identify the puppy when: 1 The puppy is old enough to have a hip x-ray and the tattoo number is etched onto the plate to ensure the correct plate is submitted for the correct animal. If you want to show your puppy or breed later on, enter obedience, agility or trials, you will need to have your puppy registered. The breeder will normally register every puppy in the litter unless there is a valid reason not to. A set of pedigree papers should also be supplied along with feeding and exercise charts, vaccination certificates and worming timetable and any other information the breeder feels is necessary. We have 40 kennels, and can care for around 80 dogs at any time. We have two large enclosed fields, where the dogs can burn some energy and play with some friends during an off-lead run, a training barn, two exercise areas filled with fun areas to explore, and on site vet suite. By public transport: Centre is approximately a minute drive from Bridgend train station. There is no bus route from the station and visitors are recommended to drive or arrange a taxi from the centre. By road: M4 exit at junction 36 and from there it's a minute drive. Fostering We are in URGENT need of more foster homes due to the increasingly high level of surrendered pugs, many requiring dedicated healthcare or rehabilitation prior to adoption. As with many rescues, the volume of pugs being surrendered has risen greatly, many in poor health, over and above the suitable homes available for them. Volunteering There are a number of ways that you can volunteer to support PDWRA, including: Home checking, by assessing adoptive or foster applicants in your near locality, according to rehoming requirements. Transporting involves the collection, delivery and safe transportation of a PDWRA pug to its new home. Fundraising, in a variety of ways including at Events, or organising your own, to raise much needed funds for the pugs in our care. There are also vacancies for specific, dedicated roles in the charity, that you can apply for. Lynn lives in the lovely South West of England with her husband Geoff, and their family of five male pugs. He is looking for an active home where he gets a lot of input with training and sociation. He is still very unsure of humans who will need patient people who will work with him. People — As an older puppy who was unsold from the breeder, Romulus is very unsure of humans. He will need further gentle training and socialisation to be happier around people but we have faith that he is young enough to pick this up when given kindness and love. He is fantastic with sensible children. Dogs — Romulus would be happiest in a home with another dog for company. His housetraining is a work in progress and he is unsure of nearly everything and everyone around him. Out and about — He will need continued gentle guidance on walks, car travel and trips to the vet. Type of home — A patient home where his people are around for most of the day would be great for Romulus. He deserves to have the company he craves and to be part of a family who are prepared to work with him so he can reach his full potential. He will be an active lad as he gains in confidence so adopters will have to ensure he is taken on regular jaunts. He would like to live with other dogs for company and can live with sensible children who are understanding of his needs. My sisters have joined me in this passion so there are litters being raised in three states, New Jersey, Tennessee and Kentucky. We strive to provide appropriate stimulation for each puppy according to their development. This includes frequent walks outside, visiting our other pets, and playing with different kinds of toys. We also incorporate positive training while the puppies are young in such a way that the puppies don't even know they are receiving obedience training. We keep it fun. As maturing puppies stay with us we continue obedience training and they learn more and more the longer they are with us. We temperament test using the Volhard tool to help us pair puppies to the right home. This helps for each puppy and family to come to a great match for each other. A structure evaluation is performed on each puppy. A puppy with good structure is "comfortable in its own skin" and happier and able to perform better. This is especially essential to puppies that will grow and have important work like being a service dog, competing in agility and other dog sports, and also in conformation showing.
