This is mostly my opinion and not concrete fact, but the two theories I have on why the lighter colors of Yellow Labradors became more common are: Firstly, during the early years of the breed the darker yellows and reds were more common. So when a pale cream or very light yellow was born, it seemed more exotic, rarer and hence more desirable. So breeders started to selectively breed for these colors and hence less and less reds were born. Secondly, since the middle s, a famous brand of British toilet paper, Andrex has used a pale Yellow Labrador in their television adverts. Their adverts went on to be shown in over countries for over 35 years. Most colors centered on a cream to light golden color. The dark yellows and reds fell out of fashion. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the range of available shades in the Yellow Labrador have once again widened. They stood out among the crowd and so they were more desired. This caused breeders to try to match the demand and selectively breed for lighter colors. Due to a lack of popularity of the dark red coat colors, it all but disappeared. But this new-found rarity in turn made the darker red Labs more desirable. So now there are many breeders who are selectively breeding to try to obtain litters of reds to meet the demand of people who want the rarer color. Things have turned full circle. Controversy Around The Red And Darker Yellow Shades Being uncommon in comparison to the black, paler yellow and chocolate shades does make some people question the red Labradors pedigree. They question whether in fact they are a pure bred Labrador or not? However, unlike the so-called Silver Labrador Retriever that is surrounded by accusations of outcrossing Labradors with Weimaraners to introduce the diluted coat color to the breed, no such controversy surrounds the darker colors of Yellow and Red Labradors. They are a genuine, pure bred Labrador, with a history going back to the earliest days of the breed. Another controversy is the fact that Fox Red Labrador breeders charge a far higher price than breeders do for the more traditional colors of the breed. They advertise their dogs as being a rare breed and charge a premium. There is some truth in this, but this controversy also follows many other breeds and colors of dogs. Are Breeders of Reds Irresponsible? There is some evidence to support this in a very few small cases, but there are some highly responsible breeders too and I think the good do outnumber the bad. In our experience, no a Fox Red lab has the same loving, friendly temperament as black, yellow, and chocolate Labs. Duck season 9months old was much the same, once he got a smell of a duck, Abe was on it and retrieved 36 ducks. He again worked good with other dogs and again performed blind retrieves on ducks that sailed further than expected. Abe is typically by my side when hanging around the house, but definitely knows when I am loading up the truck to hunt, and then he will not leave the truck. Tips for Avoiding Online Labrador puppy Scams Ask for multiple pictures of the pet, including poses with specific items a recent newspaper, a tennis ball, etc. Ask for a phone number for the person selling the puppy and a veterinary clinic the pet has been to. If they do give the phone numbers, call and ask questions. If the seller says they are in a particular state but asks you to send money elsewhere, especially another country, avoid it. If the person is claiming to be a breeder, ask for breeder registration information. Never pay in cash via Zelle, Cashapp, money order or Western Union. Pet insurance is NOT required for a pet to be shipped or to travel. Do research to get a sense of what a fair price is for the breed you are interested in adopting. Think twice if they are selling a purebred puppy for free or at a very low price for the breed. It should be a red flag if e-mail communications have broken English or very poor grammar. How to prevent coughs in dogs? Why do dogs cough? As your pet explores the world with their nose or mouth, they encounter germs, dirt, tiny bugs, bits of grass, and many other particles. If some of this material is breathed in, your dog may cough to expel it. No big deal, right? And if the coughing is accompanied by changes in breathing, it could indicate something more serious. Set goals. Compare with dogs like yours. Monitor sleep. Detect issues and keep them healthy. Shop Dog Trackers Is it a cough or a gag? Coughing and gagging may sound similar when they happen, but they are not quite the same. A cough is caused when your dog forces air out of the mouth and throat. Gagging is more akin to vomiting, but nothing comes out except some phlegm or mucus. Gagging can lead to coughing and coughing can lead to gagging, but either can happen on its own. Gagging is often the result of your dog gulping down large chunks of dry food or swallowing something distasteful. Take a video of your dog coughing and show it to your vet. This will help the vet decide if the cough signals an emergency or could be contagious, like kennel cough or canine influenza. What are the symptoms of kennel cough? Kennel cough typically causes your dog to produce a deep, dry, honking cough. Kennel cough is caused by several types of bacteria or viruses, but it produces only mild illness. Kennel cough is highly contagious and is often spread in group settings such as obedience classes, boarding facilities, or dog parks. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to alleviate the cough. Be sure to keep your pup away from other dogs until they are no longer contagious. The Bordetella vaccine can protect your dog from getting kennel cough. It can be administered as an injection or nasal spray. Talk to your vet about this vaccine, especially if your dog is boarded frequently. Look around for clues to determine if your dog recently chewed on or ate something that could have lodged in the throat. If you suspect a foreign object is lodged in the throat, seek veterinary care as this could block the airway or cause infection. Just keep a close eye on your pup after an incident like this. Environmental allergens Pollen, smoke, fungi, and other inhaled allergens can cause coughing in your dog. If your dog has allergies, consider keeping them indoors during peak allergy season, or ask your veterinarian for medication to alleviate the symptoms. Toy dog breeds and obese dogs have an increased risk of developing a collapsed trachea. Tracheal collapse occurs when the cartilage surrounding the airway weakens. Treatment for a collapsing trachea includes weight loss and medication to reduce coughing. Pneumonia A wet, phlegmy cough may indicate a buildup of fluid in the lungs. If the fluid becomes infected, then your dog will have pneumonia. One way to know if your dog might have pneumonia is to watch their breathing. If breathing is labored even when the dog is resting and not coughing, that may be a sign of pneumonia. You may notice the cough becoming more prevalent when your dog is lying down. Heart disease is more likely to occur in older dogs. Canine influenza Coughing, along with sneezing, runny nose, runny eyes, fever, and lethargy can signal canine influenza dog flu. Ask your vet about supportive care for your pup, such as fluids and other medications to reduce fevers.
