Along with a really nasty skin condition, he was emaciated, had an upper respiratory infection, UTI, GI worms, and heart worms. It was clearly evident he had been neglected and abused. He got treated and well fed with a heaping side of love and care so he could be ready to meet his new family. Even though he had a rough patch, he still loves and want to be loved. He is a true velcro Boxer and want to be with you and cuddle. If he can't cuddle, he will be at your side, waiting for your attention and to look into your soul with those big, chocolate eyes. He wants to do whatever you do and be where you are. He is such a joy to be with. He had a good life before his previous owner, so he was already neutered and knew manners and commands. He is very smart and love treats, so I he picks new things up fast. He is house broken and know to stop something if mom says "uh-uh no" or "leave it" in her firm voice. He doesn'tt chew anything and doesn't counter surf. He only barks at delivery people. Chance can share his people, toys, and his bed, but please let him have his food to himself - he didn't always have food and worries. Chance knows the up and down commands, though he won't get on furniture unless you tell me it is okay each time. He also know sit, stay, come, and shake. Chance walk easy on a leash and loves his walks. He corrects easy with voice commands and gentle pressure on the leash. Sometimes, something fun to chase goes by and he wants to get it. He uses a harness and that helps him learn not to do that. He is already much better at it, except with cats and rabbits - those are too exciting. Some of his favorites include car rides, walks, being outdoors, toys, and cuddling. Part of his past was being crated all day, every day without bathroom breaks, enough food, or play time. So please let him play often, with lots of exercise. Also, Chance can not ever be crated at home, the vet or boarding except in emergencies and with medication. Crating triggers panic attacks for him specifically because of his past. The good thing is, he is such a good boy free roam, you don't need to crate him! Chance very much likes dogs and wants to play, but his foster Boxer brother is really old and can't play. He plays with his people and neighbor dogs. Chance does a good job, but can miss some doggie signals and will need help learning all of them for playtime. He acts like a big puppy, so he could knock down or step on little children with his zoomies. He does love all the rubs, pets, hugs, cuddles, ear smooshing, kisses, and scratches you can dish out. He also is happy to be lifted for a bath, car ride, or vet exam, though. We know some of the abuse in Chance's past was done by a man. He is scared of some men - not all men, but certain actions done by men trigger memories. He is not scared of the women and kids he has met. It took Chance a few days to trust him, but I love my foster dad now. He now trusts that his foster family will only let safe people in the house and will steer wide of men on walks doing any of those scary things like swinging a tool or carrying a load overhead. Start by loving it, training it and protect it. They are just as smart as the colored Boxer, just as loving, playful, happy and devoted. As an added note we wanted to add something regarding the so called "Rare" Black Boxer. Falsely advertising them as Rare and asking outrageously high prices because of the so called "Rare" Black color. There are some breeders that promote the Black Boxer as rare when in fact they are not. They can not be registered with AKC. They are not within the standard of the breed. Too many unscrupulous breeds are taking advantage of people telling them that they are "Rare" when in fact they are not. If there is one spot of Brindle when the Boxer pup is born or shows up at a later time it can not be labeled as a Black Boxer. Stay away from those breeders that falsely claim to have the "Rare" black Boxer. If you find a breeder that says the black Boxer can be registered with AKC they have lied to you. They can not be registered. White Boxers, yes. Black Boxers, never. Always check with AKC when in doubt. Yes they can be registered with CKC. CKC allows you to register most any dog with them as long as you send in a couple of pictures so they can see what it looks like. If it resembles the breed they say it is then they will register it. Not a reputable, worth while registration. Pictures do not prove this dog is full blooded. So be careful when you are searching for your Boxer. White Boxers are not born sickly! White Boxers are not rare! There are more white Boxers out there than you know. A lot of white Boxers are just not being registered, and just placed in loving homes. White Boxers are often advertised in the local papers or on the internet as "rare" or "hard to find. Some breeders discourage any type of registration with A. All Boxers no matter what color should be counted. This is putting two flashy dogs together. But there are brindle and fawn Boxers that are deaf also. I had a flashy brindle that was born deaf. The "white" gene comes from the flashy gene in Boxers, which is a recessive gene. So, you have to have two dominant Boxers to produce the flashy puppy! Solid white Boxers are not albinos. If they have pigment. Any small spot on their body, brindle or fawn they are referred to as checked or parti colored. Boxers, no matter what color belong to the Molosser group and the Molosser does not develop albino's. Deaf Boxers are easily trained to read sign language. Dogs of any kind are only as dumb as the owner lets them be. ALL dogs should be dually trained invoice and hand commands in case of deafness at an elderly age. It will help you to still be able to communicate with your pet. White Boxers can be fully registered with A. There are some breeders that believe in giving no registration or only limited registration. White Boxers make excellent pets and companions, loving other animals and children the same as any other Boxer. Although they can't be shown in the conformation ring. They can be shown in Agility and Obedience, and do quite well.Just like any other color. White boxers can live a healthy and productive life; the same as there litter mates of color. Many breeders just take it upon themselves to put down white pups at birth. Some breeders will put down kill a deaf puppy. Claiming they have no value. The truth being they are more afraid of people finding out they have had a deaf puppy born from their lines. Thus fearing their lines would be ruined by having a deaf puppy born from their lines. So by killing off the deaf off spring puppy they think they will hide deafness in their lines. These deaf puppies are as smart and loving as all the other Boxers. They can lead a wonderful, loving productive life. They have much to offer to us in so many ways. Yet unscrupulous breeders, backyard breeders, and puppy millers, and even some pet stores bill them as such and add a hefty price tag! Most pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills or dog traders or brokers. This should apply to all colors of Boxers. Not just the white Boxer. Flashy or Plain, White, Fawn, Brindle. A pet puppy is a pet puppy. White Boxers suffer the same illnesses that fawns and brindles do. While white Boxers can be just as healthy as their colored litter mates. Some may have a tendency to be more sensitive to the sunlight. But not all of them are sensitive to sunlight. Many colored Boxers are sensitive to the sun as well. Sunscreen is recommended for both colored and white Boxers. You should never leave any Boxer out in the sun all day. They have the same personalities as any other Boxer. Truth is any color Boxer can be deaf from birth. In Europe they keep more accurate health records noting when they have a deaf colored or white Boxer. When mama has finished her clean up, we remove puppy for a quick weight, add an ID collar, and treat the umbilical stump with a disinfectant. For the first few days after birth, we practically have to drag mama away from her babies to get her to go out to potty. After the first few days, mama begins to leave the puppies for brief periods of time—usually she lies just outside the box on the cool floor—she needs an occasional break from the higher temperature that is so necessary for her babies. We also have a heating pad area the puppies can choose to move to if they need more warmth when mama is away. Puppies are little heat seeking missiles—they have heat sensors on the sides of their noses. This heat seeking instinct guides them to mama to nurse, to each other to puppy pile and to warm areas in their nest. We also add one additional step by presenting the puppies with a new scent stimulation daily. This series of brief, specific exercises we perform are in addition to our normal daily handling of the puppies as we weigh them, trim toenails, move them to clean their area, etc. One Week Old: The puppies continue to spend all their time nursing or sleeping. During this week, we give them their first toenail trim and continue to weigh each puppy two-three times a day. We monitor weight gain carefully, since that is our first indication that a puppy might need a little extra boost of supplemental formula. Puppies generally double their weight in their first week of life! These rails originated on farms to protect piglets—hence the name pig rail. Puppies often gravitate to the outer edges of the box and wedge themselves down in a corner. Since mama is spending most of her time in the box with her babies all around her, she often leans back against the walls and falls deeply asleep as she recovers from her labor and delivery. The rail stops her from crushing or smothering a baby that has burrowed in behind her along the edge. We remove the rails when the puppies are about three weeks old and are strong enough to raise a ruckus if they get trapped. Towards the end of the first week, we see their eyelids begin to become more defined and separate, and their eyelashes grow longer. By the beginning of the second week, the eyes are starting to open in the inner corner and working to the outer corner of the eyes. By days old, their eyes will be open. Two Weeks Old: The puppies eyes are all open now and their ears will be opening in the next few days. At this age puppies do not experience fear, so the startle is not fear driven. In these next few weeks before they begin experiencing fear around weeks of age, we will mildly stress them with noises to build their recovery response. We are carefully watching the intensity of the startle and the speed of recovery—our goal is to elicit a very mild startle followed by a rapid recovery. By repeating the noise several times in a row, the startle response will diminish and go away and the recovery will become immediate. This will help the puppies be stable to new sounds and experiences as they grow into adult dogs. The puppies continue to gain weight at a remarkable rate—often several ounces a day. Mama is still stimulating puppies to potty and cleaning up completely after—she keeps the nest fastidiously clean. Their awareness of their surroundings is awakening. We start enriching their environment during this week—we generally remove the whelping box at this point to give them more room to explore, adding soft toys to give texture to their area. We place potty pads at the back of their area for the beginning of potty training, and we help define that potty area by adding sleeping beds, changing the bedding in the main area of their pen several times a day and leaving the soiled pads in the potty area. The puppies will gradually begin to follow the scent to the specific potty area, and in a matter of weeks they will regularly go to the designated potty area to eliminate. Four-Six Weeks Old: During these weeks we continue to add enrichment items to their area and also expand their area as they show signs of needing more room to move and explore. The puppies become more stable on their legs and start to interact with one another, play bowing, barking at one another, and noticing us. We have continued the weekly toenail trims and daily handling—touching paws, ears, body. At this time we increase our interactions with the puppies and spend more individual time with them. As the puppies continue to wake up and become more aware over the next several weeks, we will start our clicker training exercises, following our Puppy Culture protocols. Although the puppies are still nursing, during this time they are introduced to food. We start them with puppy formula, gradually adding in raw lamb and baby rice cereal, then softened kibble and diminishing the formula. Mama dog is usually tired of sharp teeth nursing and she pushes the puppies to weaning. She no longer lies down to nurse and only spends brief times in the pen with them cleaning them and checking on them—then out she jumps to lie just out of reach, keeping an eye on things, but no longer feeling as protective. At this point, she is fine to let the other older dogs interact with her babies, and she happily rejoins her guardian family once her puppies are eating solid food on their own. Seven-Nine Weeks Old: Weather permitting, puppies are introduced to the outside area through the doggy door and discover a whole new world of running, larger toys and obstacles, wind, sun, rain, the chickens, etc. Such fun times they have outside! They become proficient at diving through the doggy door, in and out all day. In the warmer months, we have a wading pool for them to play in, in fall and winter they chase leaves, dodge rain drops, and play in rain puddles. At about eight weeks of age we do our temperament and structure evaluations and veterinarian check up. If an owner gives in to this during the first year of puppy-hood, it can set up a foundation of begging behavior down the road. It is really difficult to not give in to those "puppy dog eyes" however, setting up rules and guidelines, with feeding in particular, lends to better health. While some "human" foods are perfectly fine for a canine to consume, it is the manner in which a dog is given that food that will either reinforce or discourage the begging. While home cooking for this breed is highly recommended, any food given off of an owner's plate is not a good idea. Once a dog is given any morsel, he will repeat the begging behavior again.
