If possible, you should stop reproducing your dog much before that and have it spayed, as this would improve its health in general. Occasionally, breeders will utilize artificial insemination to aid in breeding elderly males. The simple fact is that a weak or sickly mother will give birth to a poor puppy. For instance, if the mother is overweight, she can have joint problems and, like a human mother, make labor and delivery more difficult.
