Father is a strong, chunky Labrador with an excellent breeding background, he was never registered but both grandparents were IKC reg. How much shedding you can expect with your pup is hard to determine. Some pet owners report that their Goldendoodle pup hardly shed at all during this phase. Whereas others experienced a massive amount of shedding in a short period. Matting Perhaps the most troublesome aspect of a Goldendoodle losing its puppy coat is matting. Goldendoodles actually have a double coat which is prone to getting matted, especially when they transition into their adult coat. Goldendoodles are known for having very vibrant and unusual coat colors such as red, blue, and apricot, which are particularly eye-catching during their puppy months. This can be quite dramatic as some Goldendoodles will change their original color, which can result in your pup looking like a completely different dog. The reason for this is that Goldendoodles inherit many characteristics from their Poodle genes such as changing the color of their coats. If your Goldendoodle has dominant Poodle genes, this is something to be aware of. Goldendoodle Coat Types Goldendoodle coats stand out compared to a lot of other breeds. Their double coat can vary in characteristics due to Poodle and Golden Retriever genetics, which ultimately will determine how much grooming is required. Golden Retriever coats are made out of fur and are known for shedding excessively. Whereas Poodles have non-shedding hair coats that require a lot more grooming and maintenance. These are the most common Goldendoodle coat types: Wavy. The change can be sudden or gradual, and sometimes the texture of the coat will change completely. The fur grows in dense curls that can be tight, kinky curls, or loose barrel curls. Generally, curly coats have virtually no doggy odor and are usually very low shedding. Wavy Coat English Goldendoodles have wavy coats that are also sometimes referred to as fleece coats. This coat type is typically very low shedding, but it does need plenty of regular grooming to prevent matting. Straight Coat Goldendoodles with straight coats take mostly after the Golden retriever parent. If your Goldendoodle has a mustache that is curly and very defined meaning that you can see it easily , this is a sign that they will grow into a curly hair coat. It may or may not be a different color than what you see in their mustache! The more the beard weaves, the more their fur will weave in most cases. Is this a sure thing? What happens during a Goldendoodle puppy coat transition? The transition process is a little different for each puppy. However, the main transition phases include: Start with a soft, silky puppy coat Owners see mats start to appear Clumps of fur fall out Their fur starts to transition Their adult fur grows in So, what does that actually look like? Each Doodle will start with classic puppy fur that is silky and incredibly soft. The mats might be mild or severe. These can be minimized by proper grooming.
