Of course I am! When else do I have time to write the newsletter? Hey, we went for over 10 years without a. Not one. Just came in from snorkeling. Water warm, sun, warmer. Day, beautiful. I love my ranch, what I do for a living and all my dogs. And want to go back and keep doing it. Not looking forward to the plane ride that takes forever, or the lay over in Seattle for three hours although I do like Seattle and then the short ride home on what is supposed to be a very windy read bumpy day. I get air sick easily. Ahh, Colorado weather! The biggest news in our newsletter would be the construction of our new office, which will I hope be done by Christmas. When I get back home and have access to my desk top computer and all the photos I have taken along the way of building the new office I will put a few in here. It will be so nice to have an area big enough to have several people sit comfortably and talk about the kind of puppy they are looking for. Right now we are using an itty bitty space that is office, storage, grooming room and exam room. With really only enough space to be ONE of those places. So, be prepared that if you have been here before, the office will be located next to the house and in a free-standing building. Wishing to continue my marriage of 31 years, I have not attempted to bring these dogs into the house but on rare occasions. The area they are allowed to be in that is part of the office will be right next to my desk and very easily cleaned. Check out our new page: Ranch Photos from Then and Now It gives some background on the ranch and what we started when we moved here and why. Ritz, our apricot sable daughter of our wonderful Lady Bug now living near Seattle and Rowdy living the good life as well, in Boulder has been retired and is now the cherished companion and pet of the family who had been her guardians. We are hoping that the new comers, Foxy, Munchie, Autumn, and Kimber-too will be able to take over for Ritz, and that she lives a very long and happy life with her family, who is moving to Kansas. You did a great job of being a mom, Ritzy. Enjoy your retirement! So, be on the lookout for a release date of the new and improved book on living with, training and understanding the little dogs, and know that there COULD be other interesting endeavors on the horizon. In the meantime, stay safe. Terry, Maui, HI, Oct 21st. On vacation but writing your newsletter. They were out there for about 45 minutes jumping in and out of the water and chasing schools of fish toward shore. In the off season, sure, but still — what a view and what a cool old hotel! Gracie is a 5th generation bulldogge from Rocky Mountain Rawhide and Jenny her very capable guardian — and now her outright owner. When it became apparent that the cancer treatment that I had gone through in and had seriously impacted my stamina and physical reserves I knew I needed to stop breeding my bulldogges. The problem was that the cancer treatment left me unable to stay up all night and be an active participant in the birthing process of my bulldogge litters. Poodle labor lasts a few hours — maybe as much as 5 or 6 hours. Bulldogges can be in labor for 12 to 24 hours — easily. And you can not leave them along during that time. You can not go to the store, stop and cook dinner for your family — and most of all — you can not fall asleep. They can not be left alone. So I had to let someone else take over. Too big of a risk to take. And she said YES! Thank goodness she did! And I am so glad! This summer to be a busy one! We HAVE been very busy and will continue to be all summer. We retired Maya this year but kept one of her silver daughters, and also kept several other goldendoodle daughters from other mamas. Solo, already in a great guardian home with a wonderful family, has passed all of his genetic tests, achieved his National and International Champion Titles, his DNA is back and the OFA Preliminaries are in. He is good to go and has taken over for his dad, Rowdy, who was retired last year as one of our two miniature poodle studs. Chewie is now a pet and is retired both from the show ring and from our breeding line. Solo will carry on. In the meantime — those of you who are guardians and past guardians who now own the dogs we used as breeding dogs — please remember to RSVP our ice cream social coming up on June 22nd. Bring your kids. Ice cream for everybody! We will have DA2PP vaccinations available to any of our dogs who need one. Games, playtime for the dogs, training tips! It will be fun! Til next time! Terry Jester Fall Newsletter Hi folks! Here I am again, in an identical bed, in the wonderful Inn at Port Ludlow in Washington state once again writing you your much deserved and long time coming newsletter. Diving off the dock, they chase each other briefly and then disappear into the choppy waves brought on by the icy wind and rain. I sure hope I get to see them again. We have three new International Champion Puppies. Rowdy, now retired and living the good life of a pampered pet in Boulder, CO produced all three. Both Cathy, with Tootie and Michelle, with Solo did a fantastic job showing the puppies even though they had never even SEEN a dog show before — much less taken a puppy into a show ring. They did a great job as is evident by all the Best of Breed titles and new championships. Thanks again, ladies! I can only devote one weekend a year to showing our dogs and puppies. We have to make it count! Retiring dogs and some new faces This last year we retired one of our most popular boys — Tango Haus Powder Valley Rowdy. A wonderful producer of beautiful, smart and capable miniature poodle puppies. His sons, Solo and Chewie, will continue his line and I hope have the same positive impact on our puppies for years to come. Retiring later this year will be our beautiful silver standard doodle, Maya. She will most likely have only one more litter, due spring or early summer of .To take their places we have our three new champion puppies, of course, Tootie, Solo and Chewie, as well as several younger dogs and puppies that are still being evaluated and tested. As a teaser, their names are: Silver that should give you a hint as to whose puppy SHE is! So guess what? You guys get a newsletter! Spring is a great time to think about signing up for a dog or puppy training class if you have not yet done so. For those who hike a lot with their dogs I suggest a rattlesnake avoidance clinic. She offers several over the year— usually starting around April — and they are reasonable priced, very comprehensive, and — most importantly — VERY effective. Her number is .Life is much easier with a well-trained dog. You can do so much more and have so much fun — not to mention a well-trained dog can have a job, like visiting the lonely in a nursing home, or entertaining residents at a rehab center or hospital. A trained dog is a pleasure and our Powder Valley Poodles and doodles are typically very easy to train — so go for it! A dog training session in downtown Fort Collins, CO. The reason is because so many have or are retiring this year. Jersey, our steadfast producer of wonderful service and therapy dogs will have her last litter this summer. And with the unexpected scaling down of our bulldog program we are trying to make up for it in our poodles and goldendoodles. Her hips were not good enough to breed. So, after having our own line of beautiful, healthy and wonderful bulldogges for so long — we had to retire our Olde English Bulldogge line. It is a wonderful program and we give them many puppies every year. The Veterans Puppies for Life program will take care of all of the training Oz will require to be the service dog Earl needs. Every veteran that receives one of our dogs through this program is a Purple Heart Recipient. You can also contact Terry Jester at Powder Valley Poodles at landline — no texts please or email at: Arriniranch aol. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page. We have some new questions and answers. If you are going anywhere with your best friend make sure he or she has plenty of COOL water in which to quench his or her thirst. Is your dog suddenly digging? If digging in dirt is a new problem it could be because he or she is trying to find the cooler dirt underneath the top layer. Make sure your pooch has shade and water. Now for the fun stuff! Our newest addition to our poodle breeding program. Bandit is a 11 month old red and white standard parti-color who has passed all of his preliminary genetic tests. Assuming he continues to do so we will be breeding him to Isis later this year. He is an AKC registered cream-colored golden retriever that we will use to replace the retired Nemo. Tinman will help us produce our very popular goldendoodles starting in the fall or winter of .I picked Tinman out of a large group of puppies because he moves so beautifully and fluidly. These small bulldogs are excellent companions and very trainable service and therapy dogs. These wounded warriors need good, solid, healthy puppies to train as service and therapy dogs for our veterans wounded in action. Tyreese turned out to be a great match for a navy warrant officer in need. Congratulations to Tyreese for finding his new best friend! Good job Claudia and Dandee!!! We can now proudly display the BBB logo on our windows and web sites. Other than to say we still need Guardian homes for puppies that will be used in our breeding program but housed by a family — perhaps YOURS — nearby Fort Collins. Talk to you later! To say these four judges liked him is putting it mildly! Good job Rocky! They get to be pets in a family AND a show dog and breeding dog. I am very lucky to have all of these folks so that I can have my dogs live with families and still get to offer top quality puppies to people all over the US. I also want to let people know that we are looking for Guardian Homes for several of our puppies this spring and summer. We have retired some dogs and are retiring more dogs as they get older and we need to replace them. We will be getting a French Bulldog male puppy this spring or early summer. Read our page about Guardian Homes to see if this is something you might be interested in. Let me know! Toni and I got the message this week we have waited so long to hear. Poor Amelia carried that baby a little longer than she wanted to and then gave birth to 9 pounds, 3 ounces of baby. We, of course, are absolutely thrilled. The cancer I fought last year had NO chance of winning once I learned I was having my first grandchild. I get to be a Bemom. I am so happy! More in May, take care everyone. Be safe, love your family two and four legs and never take them for granted. If interested in either of the gorgeous boys you can call or text Miles Lewis at .Knox: Orange Boy Knox is a charming red puppy! He loves to give hugs and kisses. He has dreamy eyes and they just melt your heart as soon as you catch a glimpse. Knox is a natural retriever, and just loves to play a game of fetch, he definitely loves his squeaky toys too! Whether it be to a pet friendly store, a park, around town or just a fun car ride. He will melt everyones hearts wherever you go. Even if its a day at home he would enjoy cuddling up with you and taking a nap just as much. He has a love for tennis balls, and especially his squeaky toys! He has great confidence and loves to explore nature. Enjoying long walks, and always having fun no matter where you are. You will easily win him over with scratches and belly rubs! He loves his snuggles and down time. He is so adorable and this puppy would be anyones great addition to the family! This litter of gorgeous mahogany reds and caramels should mature to around 45 lbs just like their parents and be a great addition to your family. Ginger had her puppies on April 16th so we can expect 8 week old puppies from this litter to be ready to go home with you in June 15th. Ginger loves to join her mom going anywhere and everywhere and often dressed up to boot! To follow her adventures you can find her on instagram cuteasabuttondoodle.

Exercise Grooming In the past, the English bulldog was used by foreign immigrants who moved to South America and brought their dogs with them. The breed, however, became close to extinction after the second world war. Some breeders, John D. Johnson, and Alan Scott kept infusing several bulldogs together in the bid to breed the American Bulldog while monitoring its health and capabilities. Today, the American bulldog is completely rid of the fear of being extinct and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in the country. The American bulldog is many sizes larger than the English Bulldog; however, they are quite similar when it comes to their temperament. It is basically a huge, cuddly, lap dog that loves children and is very affectionate. It is brave, confident and extremely loyal to its owners. They can be quite reserved when around strangers as they like to mark their territories. When trained from a young age, the American Bulldog will display an impressive level of intelligence. They are not so friendly with other strange dogs and mostly like to keep to themselves. As earlier stated, the American bulldog is a fun-loving, happy dog that thrives in a family setting. The perfect environment for this breed would be a home with a large backyard that is well fenced-in. Since they are very energetic and must be kept active, it is imperative to their growth that they have ample space to run around during the day. This is crucial for their mental and physical well-being. For dog lovers who live in apartments, the American bulldog might not be the best option for them. This is because there is inadequate space for them and being left alone would adversely affect their mental health. They can also become very irritable and destructive if left alone for long periods as they need constant mental and physical stimulation. The American Bulldog needs about two hours of outdoor exercise on a daily basis. It goes without saying that this breed is not suitable for people who work many hours every day. This dog breed requires basic physical and mental stimulation like jogging, walking, chasing balls, playing fetch, farm work, agility, and basic obedience exercises. Due to the temperament of the American Bulldog, it has to get as much exercise preferably in the outdoors. If its exercise requirements are not consistently met, this dog breed will take out its frustration in your home by chewing apart and basically destroying everything it comes in contact with while running around. The American Bulldog has quite a short coat with a minimized length and this feature makes it easy to groom. Brushing their coats weekly is usually enough when it comes to grooming the American Bulldog as they do not shed a lot. They also need thorough baths weekly or as needed as this will keep the shedding in check. Our American Bulldog puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. American Bulldogs love routine and will adapt to an exercise and grooming routine if the owner enforces it perfectly. As loyal dogs, they love to please their owners but will only obey upon frequent reinforcements. Do American Bulldogs shed a lot? Since they do not have a lot of fur, they do not shed a lot and owners will not have a lot of hair to clean up, unlike many other dog breeds. Why do American Bulldogs have webbed feet? This is mainly due to genetics and is not a cause for concern. Should American Bulldogs be spayed? Many vets advise that American Bulldog owners should ensure their pets are neutered or spayed when it is between four and nine months. How often should American Bulldogs be fed? The American bulldog has a very large appetite in its formative years. They must, therefore, be fed very often about four times daily and in double portions when they are puppies right until they turn four. Are American Bulldogs a food fit in families? The American bulldog will fit right into your family. They love kids and tend to gravitate towards them. Do American Bulldogs have common health problems? A lot of the health problems experienced by American bulldogs are mostly genetic and do not affect the entire breed. These ailments could range from the kidney to thyroid disorders and a lot more. What is the American Bulldogs life expectancy? The American bulldog has an average lifespan ranging from ten to fifteen years. What is the American Bulldogs average size? The average American Bulldog can grow to 58kg for males and 41kg for females. However, it is important that their diets are closely monitored to keep them from getting overweight. How tall do American Bulldogs get? The male American bulldog can grow as tall as 71cm while its female counterpart can grow up to 61cm. If you want a loyal, smart and incredibly active dog, then the American Bulldog is the perfect fit for you. Are you interested in purchasing a American Bulldog? Rumors of luv Remi Welcome to Rumors of luv boxers, we started about 20 years ago. We started with a wonderful American champion bloodline. We go back 6 to 7 generations in our breeding program with good longevity. We introduced some amazing European lines over the last 15 years to give more bone structure and squarer heads. One important character is disposition, we only breed leveled headed, easy to train and very intelligent boxers. We strive for the best, especially when it comes to health! To inquire rumorsboxers yahoo. Thank you for visiting and God bless! Some of our girls are our 3rd and 4th generation! We continue these outstanding bloodlines because of their good health, temperament and conformation! We will not keep nor breed any boxer in our breeding program. We strive for having the best quality! Way to go Abby!! Abby is the lighter brindle. Hello Everyone,I wanted to share this email with you from one of my clients. Hi Corie, I am pleased to tell you Mr. She was tested separately with Steve and I handling her. The tester was impressed with her not only as a Boxer specimen but for her calm, friendly, and tolerant temperament. Abby is the first Boxer she has certified as a Pet Therapy Dog. Passing this test means the world to me! Abby can work with me bringing joy and comfort to children with Intellectual disabilities complicated by medical issues. I give thanks to Dr. Karen Gerlick owner of Doc? I never under estimate what you do! Sir Samson will now start on the road to Pet Therapy Dog. He is a shoe in LOL. Samson is good at obedience but lacks some grace for agility. He is gaining his grace and speed now that he has slowed down in growing. Thank you so much for allowing us to own not one but two of your Boxers! Hope all is well with you and your family. The pictures of your new home are great. When the day comes when we are looking for another Boxer pup to add to our home we will be calling you. After all Boxers are like chips you can? My youngest son will be looking for a puppy sometime late summer or fall and he wants a Boxer. I wonder why he picked the breed? We enjoy seeing all of your new pups and truly appreciate your dedication as a breeder. Please ADD 3. Thank you, we appreciate your understanding! Welcome Testimonials "Can't be happier with our Rosie who we picked up November .Great temperment, easy to train, and the friendliest fun loving girl ever. We are already thinking of another o.These Boxers are amazing. Top of the line Their temperament, their disposition, their health.I have 3 amazing boxer babies from t.My name is Joshua Gould. We live on over 3 acres with lots of room to run and play. We have owned Boxers since we got married in .We immediately feel in love with the breed and all their many funny quirks. Sadly our first two had many health problems including skin cancer. Our first, Zeus had to be put down at the age 5. We were devastated and so I started to do some research. From that point on we only get dogs that are from quality lines and health tested. We now primarily have European lined Boxers. The ones we have owned have had less health issues. They are also more muscular, have larger heads and chests and are not quite as hyper as the American lines that we have seen and owned. It has taken us quite a few years due to kids and timing to finally start breeding some great lines. Even though we have just started to breed Boxers, we have breed German Shepherds dogs before. I used to be a K-9 officer at the local Sheriff's Department where I work. Our goal is to see Boxers here in the States to go back to the original intention of the breed. Boxer in Europe are being used in Schutzhund all the time but it is so uncommon here in the States. I am striving to not only breed beautiful fun loving boxers that we're all used to but ones that also have the proper health, temperament and drive. His main purpose is for hunting large game. But this dog breed was also useful in guarding and driving livestock. It is said that he got his name due to using his front paws for just about anything. Boxer dogs look intimidating with their stern-looking faces and powerful bodies. But they are actually very loving family dogs that get along with children and other animals. They love being with their families, and being separated from them can lead them to develop separation anxiety. Since this working dog is highly intelligent but stubborn in nature, he is better suited for experienced owners. The average lifespan of the breed is 9—10 years. Look for a boxer puppies for sale Albany New York? Here is a brief background of this protective dog with a good sense of humour. History of the Boxer The Boxer dog breed is a descendant of the now-extinct Bullenbeisser a fighting dog with Mastiff ancestry and the Old English Bulldog. He was developed in Germany in the 19th century as hunters of deer, wild boar, and bear. Later on, he was used to guard and drive cattle. The man responsible for the creation of the Boxer breed was Georg Alt, who was from Munich. He crossed a brindle-coloured female Bullenbeisser named Flora with a local dog of unknown breed. In , the first German Boxer dog named Flocki joined a dog show in Munich. After winning the dog show, he was the first-ever Boxer dog to be listed down in the German Studbook. Modern Boxer dogs were believed to be the descendants of Flocki. He was then imported to the United States in and was accepted by the American Kennel Club the following year. The American Boxer Club was established in .In both world wars, various military tasks were given to Boxer dogs including guard dogs, attack dogs, and messenger dogs. The British Boxer Dog Club was then formed in .The Boxer breed was recognised by the Kennel Club shortly thereafter and classified under the Working Group. Versatile and hard-working, these dogs are capable of carrying out different canine work. Boxers are good choices for protection dogs, police dogs, service dogs, and guide dogs for the blind. Temperament and Intelligence of the Boxer puppies Albany for sale Extremely patient and gentle, the Boxer breed is good with children. But he is recommended for families with older children as he may accidentally knock over toddlers. Befriending other pets is possible if the Boxer dog is properly socialised at a young age. It will keep him from viewing small animals as prey and reduce his tendency to dominate same-sex dogs. Is a Boxer a good family dog? Yes, the Boxer breed is a good family dog. He may look noble and intimidating, but he is actually considered the Joker of the Dog World. Boxer dogs are playful and fun-loving. They love to be part of family activities and be the centre of attention. Are Boxer dogs dangerous? Boxer dogs may be tough-looking, but they are not generally aggressive. But they will stand guard and defend their families if necessary. Boxer dogs are initially wary of strangers, but they eventually warm up to them if no danger is detected. Their protective and loyal nature makes them good guard dogs as well as watchdogs. Are Boxers easy to train? Yes, Boxer dogs are easy to train if you are already experienced in handling the breed. They are intelligent but tend to be independent and stubborn. Due to this, they are not suited for first-time owners. Boxer dogs respond better to people that are firm and consistent. However, firm does not mean harsh. Instead of strict training methods, positive reinforcements are more effective in teaching this breed basic dog manners and tricks. Boxer Breed Highlights The Boxer dog breed is a loving, loyal, and protective companion. Boxer dogs are comical companions despite their intimidating appearance. The Boxer breed has low-maintenance grooming needs. As an energetic working dog, he has high exercise needs. Boxer dogs tend to be destructive when they are left alone or unable to let off steam. Are there miniature boxers? Yes, but they are rare. Miniature boxers are either a product of mating purebred runts or cross-breeding small dogs that have similar characteristics to boxers, such as Boston terriers, pugs, rat terriers, and fox terriers. While some of these minis may closely resemble their larger counterparts, they may not act similarly. Are boxers hypoallergenic? Unfortunately, boxers are not hypoallergenic. What problems do Boxers have? Boxer dogs are brachycephalic, which means they have flat faces. This trait narrows their airway and causes breathing problems. As a result, Boxers should not be out in the sun for a long time as it can lead to heatstroke. Overexercising them must be avoided too to avoid triggering breathing difficulties. How long do Boxer dogs live? The Boxer dog breed has a short lifespan compared to other dogs. He can only live up to 9—10 years, and this is due to the prevalence of health issues in the breed. When buying a Boxer puppy, look for a reputable breeder whose breeding stock and litters are health-screened. This will help you determine how likely is your chosen Boxer puppy going to develop certain health conditions. Albany NY Albany is the capital of the U. She is also a purebred German Shepherd, but due to her coat type her ears were too heavy and just would not stay up. They love to have their picture taken. To make a long story short, the end result was that he had a very large nearly cantalope size splenic tumor which ruptured ultimatley causing his untimely passing. He was playing and being his usual self at 8 in the morning and not even 12 hours later, he took his last breath. This came from our vet. As soon as Ace began to mope around we called our vet right away. They told us to bring him in right then, which we did and they got right down to business. He weighed his usual 90 pounds and had no hight temperature, but was breathing hard and would not move. Our vet examined him and said he was in a very grave state. His gums and tongue were fading in color so much so that she called the emergency vet and alerted them to our impending arrival. We took him there and they too, were on the ball. They did an ultrasound and it confirmed our vet's suspicions. He passed away before the ultrasound was even complete. These tumors grow very rapidly and 9 times out of 10 they are cancerous. We never had the first clue. Our hearts are broken, and we miss him terribly, but if this at least helps raise awareness, then our Ace's loss was not all in vain.

Do Labradors Sleep Through the Night? There may be a lot of causes, though, if your dog sleeps more than 15 hours each day. Age, breed, amount of activity, and environmental circumstances are just a few of the multiple variables that affect how much sleep your dog needs. If your dog appears to be sleeping more than usual, analyze any environmental changes. Minor lifestyle adjustments for your dog might have a major impact on how they sleep. You might be curious as to why your Lab sleeps so much. If you have a smaller dog, it could seem like they are sleeping more or more than you are used to. The following are some reasons for changes in the sleeping pattern of your Labrador. Diet If your pooch has begun sleeping more since changing its food, nutritional variations could be the problem. Large dogs like Labradors typically sleep for 12 to 14 hours each day source. Your Labrador will probably sleep even longer if it is a puppy or an older dog. Weather It can be the case that the hot temperature has been making you feel exhausted if the weather has gotten hotter where you are. In this situation, providing it with access to shaded areas, water, and a cool room throughout the day would be beneficial. It would also be beneficial to walk it in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler. Aside from that, it would be beneficial to keep it out of the sun as much as possible to prevent heatstroke. Illness It may have been sleeping more recently due to a disease. That would be more likely if it had more recently started to sleep and had been displaying other symptoms of illness, such as weariness while up. It would be better to take it to the vet in this situation. Boredom Its tendency to sleep more might be because of boredom and lack of stimulation. A lot of daily activity is suggested for the breed of Labradors. It is often advised that they exercise for an hour each day. Click here to learn more. Activity Level Does your dog like frequent strolls across the park? Or does your dog prefer to sit on the couch? The American Kennel Club AKC estimates that a puppy that is highly active when awake may require up to 18 to 20 hours of sleep each day. Less active dogs, on the other hand, often sleep for just around 14 hours daily. No matter how active your dog is, the best strategy is to spread their exercise throughout the day. Dogs often want to snooze frequently to rejuvenate. Aging Puppies and senior dogs typically sleep even more. Puppies sleep more because they are quickly growing and because sleep is when their muscles are rebuilt. Older dogs sleep more because getting around takes more energy and they become weary more quickly. Click here to find out. Since they are young, being separated from their mother may make them feel lonely and afraid. Throughout the night, they could also need to feed or go outside a few times. Before assuming that the dog can sleep through the night, you will need to allow them some time to acclimate. They will eventually quit complaining and keeping you up at night so they can sleep through the night like everyone else. But you might be wondering when this is going to happen for those new pet owners who are sick of waking up in the middle of the night. When a Labrador Retriever reaches the age of around four months, pet owners may anticipate that they will begin to sleep through the night. They have reached an age where they can successfully sleep through the night and are less likely to need to get up in the middle of the night to obtain attention or for any other reason. The simpler it is to encourage the puppy to accomplish this milestone, the more of a foundation you provide for them early on. Each puppy may react differently to being in your house, and some may take a little longer to sleep through the night. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Please note: We are not veterinarians and you use our advice at your own discretion. We always recommend that you consult your veterinarian whenever you have health-related conditions your furbaby is facing. With that in mind, as pet parents ourselves, we wish nothing but the best for your pet and their healthy and happy lives. To help them do this by sleeping during the night, make sure to establish a routine with the puppies so they learn when to sleep when to play, and when they can go potty. Tips to help your Labrador puppy sleep: Establish a nightly routine if you can establish a routine for the whole day as it will help the puppy adjust faster Keep the sleeping area dim and quiet Don't get the puppy energetic before bedtime avoid the temptation for a late evening playtime session Prepare for interruptions barking , howling , or potty breaks during the first few weeks of their life 10 Weeks Old At about 10 weeks old, the puppy is likely still adjusting to its new home and only just starting to get used to the nightly routine. They will sleep for about 16 to 20 hours each day. At this stage of their life, your puppy should start getting better control of its bowels, meaning you shouldn't have to take it out during the night as often as you have in the past few weeks. They may even be able to sleep through the night without a bathroom break. During this period, make sure to mainly focus on helping your puppy learn its nighttime schedule, as it is still difficult for it to learn at this stage. Trying to teach too many things to the pup at once can overwhelm it and rove to be unsuccessful. Your puppy should be getting around 11 to 15 hours of sleep every day. It is at this age that you are going to have to worry about the dog's temperament. However, if a good schedule was established for the puppy with time for naps throughout the day, you shouldn't have to worry about a rowdy or energetic pup during the night, as it knows when bedtime is. At about 6 months old your Labrador puppy will be sleeping for about 12 to 14 hours every day. By this stage in your Labrador puppy's life, it should no longer be barking, howling, or need to go to the bathroom during the night as you have established a routine and it has had plenty of time to learn it. With Labradors, make sure to give them plenty of exercise during the day so that they use up the stores of energy they have, or they can develop health problems and an irregular sleep schedule. Giving your Lab something to chew on before it goes to bed will also help it use up its excess energy and sleep better through the night. Now that it is an adult, it requires less sleep and will usually sleep for around 8 to 13 hours a day. This is a positive for Lab owners as they are monophasic sleepers , which means that they only have one sleep period. This means that if you have established a good routine for your Lab, you will be on the same sleep schedule. This is nice as most dogs are polyphasic sleepers , separating their periods of sleep into two or three chunks throughout the day. So, your Lab will still take naps during the day, but they will likely occur while you are at work or are out and about during the day. Example Routine For Labrador Puppies The following is likely what your Labrador's schedule will look like, including its naps. Morning Schedule: Wake up and take the puppy outside to relieve itself Feed it breakfast Give it another potty break it is typically that puppies need to relieve themselves after eating Socializing, playing with your puppy, or taking on a walk Ideally for 30 to 60 minutes Nap Time Expect about 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on age Potty Break. Evening Puppy Exercise Spend a good 10—20 minutes playing with your pup outside or inside a couple of times during the evening. Play a game of tug or get them interested in chasing a flirt pole. Not only will this tire them out, but it will also give them some important physical exercise. Evening Brain Games and Training Use the commercials during your evening television shows to practice some basic training cues with your puppy. Not only does this work their brains and take the edge off, but it builds your relationship with your puppy and promotes a solid training foundation. A puppy's attention span is pretty short, so keep training sessions short and sweet and spread them out throughout the day. Ditch the regular food bowl and use a puzzle feeder for your puppy's evening meal. Below are some of my favorite food puzzles and interactive feeders. They're fun for dogs and tricky enough to engage their brains, yet not so difficult that a dog will become frustrated and give up. I recommend starting with the West Paw Toppl featured below for your puppy's first interactive feeder , as the opening is wider than a Kong toy — making it easier to de-stuff and for you to stuff and then clean afterward! As your puppy is successful with easier stuffed toys, they can move up to more difficult puzzles! You can see my puppy Fozzie Bear going to town on his Toppl toy during crate acclimation in this video: West Paw Toppl Interactive Feeder Available at: Available at: Difflife Snuffle Mat This snuffle mat provides a variety of hiding spots for dry food or treats, encouraging your dog to use their nose to find their meal and helping to slow down eating. The repetitive nature of these things is self-soothing to your puppy much how activities like knitting are for us. The snuffle mat I recommended above is a great way to work their nose indoors, or you can scatter their food in the grass of your yard for them to sniff out. Freeze your puppy's meal in their Toppl to make it last longer or use a licking mat smeared with a tiny bit of peanut butter or wet food for a good lick session. Hyper Pet IQ Treat Lick Mat Spread a bit of your dog's wet food, peanut butter, pureed pumpkin, or low-fat greek yogurt on this mat to provide a soothing enrichment activity. Take your puppy out for a bathroom break as late as possible — ideally, the last person to bed should also take your pup to their potty spot. This helps empty them out, decreasing the chance of them needing to go in the middle of the night. Keep this last potty break calm and boring. You don't want your sleepy puppy finding their second wind! On this note, consider your puppy's evening mealtime. You don't want to feed your puppy too late in the evening that they need to go 2 in the middle of the night. However, if you feed them too early, they may be hungry at bedtime and that can make them restless. One way to prevent late-night hunger is to use food puzzles with small "snack-sized" portions of food as their pre-bedtime enrichment. When it comes to leaving water in your puppy's crate, I always recommend free access to water at all times. Water is a "primary resource" — meaning your puppy needs it to survive. And there are some medical conditions that require access to drinking water at all times. But, if your puppy is waking up continually during the night because they need to urinate, speak with your veterinarian to first rule out medical reasons such as a urinary tract infection and then discuss with them whether restricting access to water before and during the night is a good choice for your puppy. Keeping a puppy potty log can really help you determine your puppy's natural potty schedule, which can help you adjust feeding times to increase longer sleep time at night. Download our free potty log template. PRO TIP: It can be helpful to set an alarm for yourself during the night to wake up and take your puppy for a quick potty break. It's all about being proactive — with an alarm, your puppy won't wake up feeling like they're ready to burst and start whining or crying in their crate. As they mature, your alarm can be set later and later as they can physically hold it longer. For more tips on potty training, check out "How to Potty Train a Puppy. The transition from sleeping in close proximity skin-to-skin.The reviews and photos people have submitted for this product are absolutely heartwarming, you really should check them out. I like to believe that he found having a familiar scent paired with the heartbeat sound and heat pack very comforting as he learned to sleep in his crate. He certainly loved to cuddle with it, and even after he transitioned to sleeping outside of the crate once he was old enough, he still carried the Snuggle Puppy around to use as a pillow, as you can see in the inset photo. The Snuggle Puppy can last for years. Even when your dog doesn't need it at night, just take out the batteries and heating pack and your dog will still carry it around! Another important feature of the Snuggle Puppy is that it's washable just don't forget to remove the batteries first! Another Preventive Vet staff review: "Mary Berry was having a difficult time sleeping alone in her crate — our guess was that she was missing her mom and littermates. She slept so soundly with the Snuggle Puppy, we would bring it with us when visiting friends so she had a comfortable piece of home to rest with. I highly recommend the Snuggle Puppy to help your new puppy sleep through the night! If your dog's idea of "snuggling" this toy involves mouthing, chewing, or disemboweling, be sure to take the toy away from them. Batteries are very dangerous for dogs if they are swallowed. Soothing Scents for Your Puppy Using dog-appeasing pheromones also called DAP can help your puppy feel secure and calm, as these mimic the pheromones their mother emits during nursing. Pheromones work for many puppies, but not all. But there's no downside to trying it out with your pup, so it's something I regularly recommend. The Adaptil pheromone diffuser covers a large space and lasts for 30 days before needing a refill. You might even try a spritz from an Adaptil spray on bedding shortly before placing your puppy in their crate. Just one or two spritzes are all you need! Adaptil Pheromone Diffuser. So, where should your Lab puppy sleep? A Labrador puppy should sleep in a crate or dog bed. The easiest option is a crate as you can control his environment better, and it also helps to toilet train your puppy quicker. If you choose a dog bed, partition off an area of the house using baby gates or a playpen. As a first-time dog owner, I took the sound advice of my breeder. He told me that a crate is the easiest way to train a pup to sleep well — and for faster potty training! Although I could hear my puppy cry once in a while during her first night, after that, she was fine. This is quite normal, and your dog will soon get to love his crate — he will recognize it as his special place where no one else is allowed! Here are some helpful tips to help your Labrador settle in his crate and sleep well, especially on his first night: Make sure you buy the correct size. Use a divider to partition the crate in half. As the crate will be too large at first, you can use a divider to adjust the size as your Labrador grows. I like the Midwest Homes for Pets iCrate from Amazon as it has everything you need and comes with an all-inclusive divider and wipe-clean removable tray. You can also choose either a single or double door that is handy. Cover half of the crate with a blanket. Situate the crate close to your bedroom. A quiet area for sleeping is best, not too far away from your bedroom, so you can hear your pup if he needs to go outside during the night. Or you can choose to put it right next to your bed if space allows. If you put the crate in your bedroom, you can transition to another part of the house after a few weeks. I chose to put the crate at the end of the landing as I am a light sleeper, and I hate having my sleep disturbed! Remember, dogs have different sleep cycles from humans! Check out this step-by-step guide to learn tons more on crate training, Easy Labrador Puppy Crate Training. Check out my recommendations for the Best Dog Crates for Labradors and Playpens , including soft crates, travel crates, and furniture styles. If your Labrador puppy is having a tough time sleeping through the night, you may wonder exactly when they might be able to master this new skill! Labrador puppies typically sleep through the night by 4 months old. At this age, they should sleep between hours. If you lay the foundations on the first night, your puppy may be able to achieve a night without waking up sooner. It can also help if you have a good routine and are an early riser. Here are some helpful tips to speed up the process of getting your pup to sleep through the night: Routine. Dogs thrive on routine, so ensure you establish a good bedtime routine. Potty breaks. Make sure you allow your pup to go potty right before bedtime. However, young puppies may need to go outside during the night while their tiny bladders develop. Interactive puzzle toys are also great for mental stimulation. Crate training. You can learn what to do instead in my article all about common Labrador behaviors. But are you wondering at what age your Labrador can sleep with you? This allows him to be fully potty trained and sleep through the night without having to go potty or cry for you. This interesting study compared human-canine sleeping with adult-child co-sleeping and evidenced that both shared similar benefits and drawbacks. Remember, dogs who are territorial or aggressive should not sleep in your bed. Some of the most common health benefits of sleeping with your Labrador include: An overall reduction in depression and anxiety. Increased feeling of security. Provide companionship and decrease loneliness. Reduced stress. Lowered blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. A decrease in hypertension. Cons of Sleeping with Your Labrador Of course, there can be negatives to allowing your Labrador to sleep with you in your bed. Labs are also heavy shedders, and you may find pet dander uncomfortable. Your dog can sometimes carry harmful germs. It may affect your relationship! If you sleep with a partner, allowing your dog to sleep in your bed can cause friction and disruption. Although you may suffer from disturbed sleep if you sleep with your dog, you are unlikely to be affected by his night-time antics if you are a deep sleeper. Indeed, this study from The Mayo Clinic looked at the sleep of 40 healthy humans and their dogs occupying the same bedroom to find out whether sleeping together was detrimental to sleep. Human sleep quality was lower if the dog slept on the bed rather than just in the room. Nonetheless, even if you allow your Labrador to sleep with you, only let him onto your bed when you say so. Your dog should not have free reign of your bed, which can hinder how he views the pecking order. But what about modern dogs? Do Labradors actually like sleeping with their owners? Most Labradors like to sleep with their owners as a sign of affection and closeness. Dogs are social animals and instinctively want to sleep with you as they like to be close to their pack, and you are the head of the pack! They also want to protect you and display their loyalty and trust. Some dogs might get too hot on your bed and may temporarily move onto the floor to cool down. Some might not want to sleep with you at all! Always have another place where your Labrador can sleep, such as a bed or crate nearby where he can get warm and cozy. Can a Labrador Puppy Sleep Outside? Labrador puppies grow very quickly, which leaves some pet owners wondering when would be the right time to transition their pooch to an outdoor sleeping area. But can a Labrador puppy sleep outside in the first instance? Labrador puppies can sleep outside, but not until they are between months of age. They also need to be socialized, trained, and spend time bonding with their family. The health risks around this become more precarious in extremely hot or cold temperatures. The same goes for the rarer long-haired Lab. Your Labrador is more at risk of diseases and parasites. Until your pup has received his vaccinations to keep him healthy, he is more vulnerable to illnesses and parasites. Immunizations are typically not completed until 16 weeks, so training him to sleep outside sooner than this may compromise his health. Your Lab needs to be socialized and trained. All puppies must be socialized, obedience trained, and allowed to bond with their family. Without proper socialization, you risk your Lab becoming fearful, reactive , nervous, or even aggressive. To ensure that your Labrador puppy is healthy and safe when sleeping outside, there are a few things you should always make sure he has. These items include: A doghouse. This provides your puppy with a safe space to feel safe and snuggle down. I would definitely have this Petmate Dog House from Amazon on my wish list! A bit pricey, though! Water bowl. Make sure your Lab has his favorite water bowl filled to the brink every night. Favorite toys. To make your puppy feel comfortable and relaxed, put his favorite toys wherever he sleeps outside. When all is said and done once your dog has matured, it is a matter of personal choice. Here are the key takeaways from the article: You may choose to let your new puppy sleep at your side. When he has grown, you can let him sleep on your bed. He needs to be fully house-trained and at least six months old. The benefits of sleeping with your Lab are security, bonding, and mental health. Negatives include disturbed sleep and an increase in your allergy symptoms. Most Labradors like sleeping with their owners. You can transition your dog to sleep outside between months of age. They have what is called polyphasic sleep, where they have periods of wake and sleep that occur during both the day and the night. And help you to understand the changes that occur in different stages of their lives, including when they are unwell. How Long Do Dogs Sleep? Dogs have a sleep pattern known as polyphasic. This means that they have multiple periods of sleep scattered throughout the day and night. A feature that they share with many other mammals. Dogs have better night vision than we do. So their ancestors could hunt both by day and by night, if necessary. In fact, hunting at night may have given them some advantages. It is easier to creep up on your victim under the cover of darkness. Dog Sleep Patterns Sleeping all night had no advantage for dogs, so dogs did not evolve a natural tendency to sleep for a single long stretch of time like we do. Instead, they acquired the useful ability to get as much sleep as possible, often in short stretches, whenever there is nothing much going on. You may have noticed that your dog wakes up instantly and is ready for action right away. And living with humans means that most dogs do learn to sleep the night away without disturbing their human family. Though they may wake and move around briefly during this period of time. If your dog is not sleeping through the night and disturbing your sleep, consider whether he is getting enough daytime activity and stimulation. Dogs have retained their ability to sleep whenever life gets dull. Studies of guard dogs have shown that dogs are not disadvantaged by being woken up frequently or working in changing shifts. They simply sleep when they get the chance. But how many hours sleep does a dog need during each 24 hour period? Dogs naturally sleep for longer periods of time each day than people do. But just like humans, sleep needs vary among individual dogs. Sleep needs also vary among different dog breeds. Adult Labradors will sleep for well over half of every 24 hours, and puppies under four months old may sleep as much as 20 hours a day. The reason for all this sleeping may have to do with a special type of sleep called rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep during which dreaming takes place. Do Dogs Dream? Dogs certainly appear to dream in the same way that we do. And their brains behave in a similar way to ours during the sleep cycle. REM sleep is just one phase of the sleep cycle that both dogs and humans experience. A study published in showed that REM or dreaming sleep decreases as dogs get older. So it looks as though puppies dream more than adult dogs. Sometimes when fast asleep, your dog will make twitching and running movements with his paws, and some dogs will give little yips and barks. This is a normal part of deep REM or dreaming sleep. Studies have also shown that if the part of the brain that de-activates movement during sleep is removed from a dog, the sleeping dog will actually carry out the behaviors that he is dreaming about. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie! We know that in humans, REM sleep is important. Being deprived of REM sleep can cause unpleasant effects, and there is no reason to think that dogs are any different. It is important to allow your dog to sleep deeply when he wants to and to not interrupt his sleep when he starts dreaming. Some veterinary specialists speculate that dogs sleep more than humans because their REM sleep is often interrupted due to their ability to wake easily and quickly and be ready for action. Because of that wakefulness, dogs need more periods of sleep in which to get an adequate amount of REM sleep. If you are worried that your dog may be ill because he is sleeping so much, ask yourself what has changed. Is he sleeping a lot more than he was just last week? Or has he always slept this much? Is he bright and bouncy when he is awake? Does he have a good appetite? Or does he seem lethargic or uninterested in food? Excessive sleeping in a dog that is eating well and full of energy when awake is unlikely to have any significance. And some elderly dogs tend to sleep more than they did when they were young. Make a Special Sleeping Space Your Labrador, like all dogs, is able to awaken quickly from sleep and be ready for action, whenever an opportunity presents itself. However, constantly interrupting his sleep is not a good idea. While many confident dogs will sleep pretty much anywhere, it is important that every dog has his own sleeping space. A place where he can go and relax when he wants to. Even if your dog shares your bed at night, he should still have a bed somewhere in the house that he can call his own. It needs to be somewhere free of drafts and comfortable, preferably lined with a cozy mat or blanket. Elderly Labradors may need thicker padding to support their joints. Orthopedic dog beds can provide extra comfort. It is here, in his special space, that your dog can relax fully and sleep deeply. Dogs naturally sleep for long periods of time, and sleeping a lot is nothing to worry about in a dog that is active, enjoying his food and living life to the fullest. Just like people, dogs need deep REM sleep, and constantly interrupted sleep can be harmful. You can check out crate information here: The benefits of a dog crate.

I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. The loving and gentle English Bulldog is one of the most well-liked companion dog breeds around the world. A breed of English origins, the Bulldog was first recognized as a non-sporting dog by the American Kennel Club in .The original use of this breed was Bull baiting, which was eventually outlawed with the establishment of the Cruelty to Animals Act of .This legislative act made the act of Bull and Bear baiting both illegal. The current role most suitable for the English Bulldog would be as a companion or family pet, given their sweet demeanor. The English Bulldog is relatively easy to train but definitely takes some work for more complicated commands. If you are looking for a breed to sit, stay, and play dead for treats, this is the breed for you. While they may not be the sharpest tool in the shed compared to some of the other highly intelligent breeds, they are easy going and apt to please their owner. Training this breed will be accomplished with less difficulty if you make the training reward based. Can you say Sweetheart? While this dog breed makes an above average watchdog because of their courage, this breed is a loving companion at heart. The Bulldog is excellent with kids when socialized and should be very agreeable with guests of the house. The English Bulldog breed as a whole is heralded as one of the most well liked companion breeds in the world. The Bulldog should do well with other family pets as long as properly introduced and socialized. They need to be socialized early and often to curb any negative feelings towards strange dogs. This breed is generally agreeable to most environments. Although they easily adapt to a noisy and chaotic household, they are not very tolerant of extreme weather, whether it be hot or cold. Although they are well liked and very popular, one must be aware of the potential health pitfalls with this breed. Some of the potential issues you can see with the English Bulldog is Cherry Eye, Entropion, or dysplasia. This breed also has a high risk for weight gain, so this should be monitored. An average Bulldog life span is between 8 and 12 years. You do not need to be a professional dog trainer to own an English Bulldog. They are good for most novice owners because they are passive by nature. The English Bulldog is an average shedder, so brushing him twice a week with a firm brush will be a good idea. Also, they can have a tendency to drool, so making sure you wipe their face off everyday can help ensure they do not suffer irritation on their faces and between their wrinkles. Because of the amount of wrinkles they have, it is recommended that you clean between the wrinkles fairly often to avoid irritations. The English Bulldog is a generally low energy breed. They do not require a lot of exercise, but when they do play, they play hard! Because they can be intense when they do have an energy burst, an owner must be aware of overexertion. They can be very playful, but do tend to tire out quickly. The English Bulldog is a short, stocky breed that should weigh between pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Warren G. Harding both owned English Bulldogs. Featured English Bulldog Article.

Despite this, they are actually considered to be omnivores. Four main physiological facts exist that support this idea. German Shepherds have blunt molars. These are capable of grinding up fibrous plants. German Shepherds can digest carbohydrates. German Shepherds are capable of using plant-based essential nutrients and vitamins. German Shepherds have smaller intestines compared to those of other known omnivores. Dogs can digest and absorb nutrients such as carbohydrates in cereals, fruit, and legumes due to the concept of epigenetics. This is how the environment can cause changes to how the body works. Significantly, they have amylase genes which means they can actually digest plant starch. German Shepherds can survive on a vegan diet, but there is a difference between surviving and thriving. So, can German Shepherds be healthy eating only plant-based foods? Very little research exists on the benefits and dangers of a vegan diet for dogs. This is because the topic is relatively new. A lack of evidence proving that a meatless diet is bad for dogs is not the same as having evidence demonstrating its benefits. Although, the opposite is also true. Based on currently available information, i. There are even quite a few veterinarians who feed their dogs plant-based diets. A quick Google search will undoubtedly find you plenty of options, and The American College of Veterinary Nutrition has an online directory of board-certified veterinary nutritionists. What to Consider Before Changing Your German Shepherd to a Vegan Diet Understand the Responsibility If you are looking to change your German Shepherd onto a vegan diet, we assume it is because you are a vegan yourself and have strong personal ethics, or your dog is suffering from a food allergy. You will undoubtedly have done your research and spoke to a nutritionist or other qualified professional about the safest way to cut out the animal products from your diet before you made the change. You will need to do the same and more for your German Shepherd. It will take a lot of time and effort, in the beginning especially, because you may have to try many options and combinations before you find one that works. It is also very likely to increase the cost of feeding because specialized dog food is almost always more expensive. Do you want to know the best veggies for German Shepherds? They can provide you with the most recent academic research findings and their own professional input and experience. A qualified person will also need to assess your German Shepherd to see if a vegan diet is appropriate for them. All dogs are different. What works for one might be a poor choice for another. Your chosen professional nutritionist will also be the person who can carefully design and monitor the effects of the plant-based diet on your German Shepherd. Remember, at this stage, plant-based dog diets are more like an experiment. Introducing your dog to a new diet may cause a problem, so you need to do this slowly and carefully. German Shepherds are also prone to bloating. But bloat in a German Shepherd is not the same as bloat in a human. In dogs, bloating is a medical emergency known as Gastric Dilatation Volvulus GDV , in which the stomach can twist and even rupture. Additionally, there is an interruption of the blood supply to various other organs. GDV quickly leads to toxic shock, and death readily follows if immediate treatment is not received. Some causes or risk factors for GDV in German Shepherds include eating too much at once, eating foods high in soybean meal, cannot be digested easily, or expanding in the stomach. Such foods are common in a plant-based diet. It can make the change a frustrating and painful experience for both you and your dog. Furthermore, they may only consent to eat one or two mouthfuls per meal. Unless you can somehow pack all their essential nutrients into those two mouthfuls you get nutrient-rich non-vegan foods that make this possible , this can become a health problem. These include but are not limited to alliums garlic, onion, shallots, etc. This means you cannot split your own vegan meals with your German Shepherd. Hidden Dangers! There are certain life stages or situations where German Shepherds should not be eating vegan. Puppies or those you plan to breed should not be fed a plant-based diet. Do you prefer to watch a video? It is packed with nutrients, vitamin C, folic acid, magnesium, and fiber. It is also low in fat, sodium, and cholesterol. Dogs can benefit from this antioxidant-rich vegetable as it protects against illness and defends the immune system. However, only feed your dog a tiny portion and provide it slowly to avoid choking and possible digestive blockages. You can give it raw. Asparagus German Shepherds can eat asparagus. It is a healthy option for your dog because of its vitamin K, A, B1, B2, C, and E, folate, iron, copper, fiber, manganese, and potassium. It also contains antioxidants that help flush out toxins from the bloodstream. Sometimes asparagus can make urine smell unpleasant, so consider this if your German Shepherd is not yet fully house-trained! Also, it is advised to feed cooked asparagus as the stalks can be pretty tough to chew for some dogs. I try not to overcook my asparagus as it can lose a lot of nutrients. Beets Beets beetroot are full of iron, fiber, and vitamins. However, as they are pretty acidic, giving your dog a tiny amount is best. Bell Peppers All color of bell peppers contains essential vitamins and minerals for your dog, although the red variety is best as it contains the highest amount of vitamins and antioxidants. They are also very low in calories and can be given in moderation as a healthy treat. You must remove the seeds and stems to avoid indigestion. You can feed bell peppers raw. However, your dog will find the skin tough to chew, so it would be better to steam or mash the pepper to make it easier to digest. Do NOT give your dog red chili peppers; the spicy taste will make your dog sick, and they will not thank you! Broccoli Broccoli is a vegetable that is also okay to eat in minimal quantities. It is high in fiber and vitamin C and low in fat. However, broccoli florets contain a chemical that can cause significant gas in some dogs, so you must experiment first, as it could be unpleasant for everyone in the house! You will also need to take care when feeding your dog the stalks as they could cause an obstruction, so make sure you cut them into small pieces. Brussels Sprouts Brussels sprouts are loaded with nutrients, vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants that are great for dogs. In addition, they contain vitamin K, which helps the blood clot properly, builds bones, and protects the heart. I hate Brussels sprouts, so my German Shepherd has never tried them! Cabbage German Shepherds can eat cabbage including red, savoy, and bok choy. It is safe for dogs and full of nutrients, especially vitamins C and K, and fiber. Carrot Carrots are an excellent low-calorie snack. They are high in potassium, fiber, and beta-carotene, producing vitamin A, which is good for healthy bones, eyes, and the immune system. Frozen or raw carrots are ideal for your puppy if they are teething. My German Shepherd loves to crunch on a raw piece of carrot as a treat, and it also helps to clean her teeth. Carrots are one of the best vegetables you can give your dog. Cauliflower German Shepherds can eat cauliflower, and it is known for its nutritional qualities. It may also reduce inflammation and cancer. Cauliflower does, however, contain a chemical that will give your dog the dreaded gas! Celery German Shepherds can eat celery. Celery contains vitamins A, C, and K, folate, potassium, and manganese, and it is an excellent source of fiber. These excellent nutrients are needed to promote a healthy heart and even fight cancer. In addition, celery is good for your dog to crunch on and might even freshen up their doggy breath! Corn German Shepherds can eat corn. It can provide your dog with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and natural antioxidants. However, it is a starchy vegetable high in carbohydrates, so feed it sparingly. Corn is not the best choice of vegetable for nutrition, as I describe better alternatives in this article. You should only feed your dog small amounts to avoid weight gain or possible dental issues. On the other hand, if your dog is with you on a long walk and needs a quick energy boost, corn is an ideal alternative treat to take with you. Canned corn usually high in sodium and popcorn containing butter or salt should also not be given. Eggplant German Shepherds can eat eggplant aubergine. It also contains B vitamins, vitamin K, and potassium and can protect your dog from chronic diseases. It also contains a small amount of toxic solanine in high concentrations. Cook the eggplant before giving it to your dog, as the raw flavor is not very nice and difficult to digest. It can be grilled, roasted, or baked; always feed it in small bite-sized pieces. Green Beans German Shepherds can eat green beans, and they are highly nutritious. Green beans are full of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber and are also low in calories. If you feed them raw, remember to cut them up first to prevent choking and help with digestion. Most dogs seem to like green beans. I wish I could say the same when I tried to feed them to my kids at mealtimes! Due to its high water content, the nutritional value of lettuce is low, but it does contain beta-carotene and fiber. It could be a practical choice of snack or treat if your dog is overweight due to its very low-calorie content. You must ensure lettuce is washed thoroughly before feeding it to your GSD. Other healthy and more nutritious choices include spinach, green beans, and asparagus. Parsnips Parsnips are a safe vegetable to give to your GSD, and they contain plenty of vitamins C and B6, folic acid, and potassium. Parsnips also have antioxidants that help fight cancer. You can feed them raw as long as they are chopped up into small digestible pieces, or they can be cooked, which is even better for your dog. As parsnips are starchy along with other root vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and beets and high in sugar, ensure you only feed in moderation. Peas Peas are safe for German Shepherds and contain several vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, K, and many B vitamins. Peas also contain fiber, iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium and are good for the eyes, skin, and heart. They are great for boosting energy levels as they are starchy carbohydrates. They are high in fiber, so they can help your dog maintain a healthy weight. You can feed your dog fresh or frozen peas, but avoid the canned variety as they may contain a lot of sodium and additives. Potato Cooked Potatoes are starchy vegetables and are okay to feed your dog ; however, they must be cooked and the skin removed. Do not give your GSD raw potato or if the potato is green on the outside as they contain a compound called solanine which is toxic to them. However, cooking a potato reduces the levels of solanine, thus making them less dangerous. Potatoes contain vitamin C, B6, iron, magnesium, and potassium, which are great nutrients for your dog. As they are high in carbohydrates which provides energy , you should only feed a minimal amount, especially if your dog already has issues with obesity or diabetes. If this is the case, it would be best to avoid them altogether. Potatoes should be baked, boiled, or mashed, with nothing added like salt or butter. French fries or potato chips are a definite no, as these are unhealthy for you, me, and your dog! Sweet potatoes are a healthier choice as they are much more nutritious. Pumpkin German Shepherds can eat pumpkins. Pumpkin is full of fiber, vitamin A, and antioxidants to help to promote overall cardiovascular health. Therefore, it is one of the best vegetables recommended for digestion and overall health properties. Both raw and cooked pumpkin is fine for your German Shepherd; however, it is better cooked as your dog can digest it easier. Both rutabaga swede and turnip contain calcium, potassium, vitamins A, C, and folate and are also low in calories. They are highly nutritious, well known for their antioxidant qualities, and are good overall disease-fighting vegetables. If you feed it raw to your German Shepherd, cut it into small pieces and thoroughly wash it first to eliminate any traces of bacteria or pesticides. Spinach German Shepherds can eat spinach, which has nutritional properties that can benefit your GSD. It is high in iron and provides fiber, vitamins, beta-carotene, and antioxidants. Spinach is also known as a cancer fighter. Sweet Potato German Shepherds can eat sweet potatoes. They are perfect for their digestive system as they contain an excellent source of fiber. Sweet potato is also rich in an antioxidant called beta-carotene, which provides various benefits. This veggie helps lower the risk of heart disease and certain cancers and is good for your GSDs immune system. However, as sweet potatoes are mainly starchy carbohydrates, if your dog is diabetic, overweight, or inactive, they are probably best avoided unless you give him a minimal amount. Sweet potatoes must be cooked and the skin removed before feeding your dog. You can bake, mash, or puree them. They are also a healthier choice than cooked white potatoes. Squash Squash butternut is safe for your dog. It is technically a fruit, but we will discuss it here as it is used as a vegetable. It belongs to the same family as pumpkin, and so if your dog enjoys the taste of pumpkin, then they will like the naturally sweet taste of squash too! It is highly nutritious and contains vitamins A, C, and K, fiber, magnesium, and potassium. Squash is good for overall general health, including eyes, skin, bones, and immune function, and can fight certain diseases. It is relatively low in sugar and calories, and the fleshy part is easy for German Shepherds to digest as long as it is cooked. Avoid giving the skin as it is too hard for your dog to digest. It is better cooked, either boiled or roasted and fed in bite-sized treats. Zucchini Zucchini courgette is safe for your GSD and contains fiber, vitamins, and minerals, especially vitamin C and potassium. It is low in fat and cholesterol and, therefore, a good choice for overweight dogs instead of feeding a high-calorie treat. In the summer, a small portion of frozen zucchini is excellent for your German Shepherd. Can German Shepherds Eat Vegetables? We only need to look at the history of the domesticated dog when deciding if German Shepherds can eat vegetables. German Shepherds can eat vegetables as dogs have adapted to a starch-rich diet over hundreds of years of domestication, and their digestive system can process vegetables. Vegetables can provide an additional nutrient source for your dog, including vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They can also be given as a supplement in their diet. As vegetables are low in calories and fat, they make a good choice if your dog needs to lose weight. They are also cholesterol-free and contain less sugar than fruits. All treats should be fed in moderation ; a few small pieces a day will be fine. Pro Tip! The amount of daily calories that your dog needs depends on his size, age, and level of activity. Ideally, they should be cooked first, as dogs may find most of them hard to digest. I like to steam mine because veggies taste better cooked this way. Do not add salt or seasoning to the cooking process, as too much of this is bad for your dog. Some vegetables like carrots, celery, lettuce, and green beans can be given RAW. This helps rinse away any dirt, bacteria, and any remaining pesticides. Many dogs will try to swallow raw bites of a vegetable whole, which can cause choking or digestive issues, so make sure you feed them in small pieces. While fresh vegetables are the best option, frozen vegetables offer convenience and have the same healthy nutrients as fresh ones. You can also freeze vegetables by following the below steps: Wash them in cold water first. Cut into bite-sized pieces. Blanch them by placing them in a pan of boiling water for a couple of minutes. This helps to remove any bacteria and helps to retain vitamins and minerals. Remove from the boiling water and place in cold water until chilled. Place in freezer bags and freeze. Be wary of canned vegetables, as many brands are high in salt, which can cause your dog to become dehydrated or, in extreme cases, cause salt poisoning. Canned vegetables may also contain unnecessary additives. If you want more information on the best fruits for German Shepherds , check out my complete guide. The below vegetables are toxic to dogs and must not be fed to your German Shepherd: Garlic German Shepherds can not eat garlic as it is toxic and damages the red blood cells, leading to anemia. While garlic can be okay in tiny amounts, large amounts can be poisonous, even though your pet must eat a lot to get very sick. Your dog may display symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and breathing problems. Onions, Shallots, Leeks, and Chives German Shepherds can not eat onions, shallots, leeks, and chives as they are poisonous to most pets. These foods can also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and breathing problems. Rhubarb Leaves Although the stalks of the rhubarb plant are safe for your German Shepherd in small quantities and can be good if your dog has constipation , the leaves contain oxalic acid, which is toxic to dogs. This can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and tremors. You must be careful if you grow rhubarb at home and ensure your dog is never unsupervised. Cooked potato with the skin removed is okay to eat as the cooking reduces the amount of solanine. Mushrooms Wild German Shepherds can not eat mushrooms wild as they can be toxic. There are thousands of wild mushroom species, and while only a few are poisonous, this could be very serious if your dog eats one. Toxic mushroom ingestion can cause severe stomach upset, seizures, liver failure, and death. Feeding German Shepherds vegetables can provide several benefits to their overall health and well-being. These vitamins help to support the immune system, promote healthy skin and coat, and even help to improve vision. How often can German Shepherds eat vegetables? The answer to this question depends on a few factors, including the age and size of your German Shepherd and the type of vegetables you are feeding them. Generally speaking, German Shepherds can eat vegetables daily, but ensuring that the vegetables you provide are appropriate for their age and size is essential. What are the best vegetables for German Shepherds? The best vegetables for German Shepherds are those high in fiber and low in fat. Vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, green beans, spinach, sweet potatoes, and squash are all excellent sources of fiber and low in fat. Final Thoughts You now know what vegetables you can safely feed your German Shepherd and which ones to avoid! We all love to reward our dogs with treats and experiment with new ones, and vegetables make a great option. Related Posts You May Like:. But the most important thing you will need to remember since your pet won't be getting any meat is to feed high-quality protein with the meals, just as you do. As you learn more about feeding a raw diet, you'll likely bump into many people who are totally against feeding grains. Feeding grains is a personal choice and does work well for many. It is suggested that the protein be rotated because each and every protein source you choose has a different amino acid chain and concentration. It is also highly recommended to seek out organic grains and beans. Oils are also an essential ingredient in a vegetarian diet, so make sure these get alternated as well, once a week! Dogs are NOT vegetarians. No way. Ain't gonna work. Answer by dalksnis My she-GSD adores apples, likes some raw and boiled potatoes, likes milk, and especially kefir as a change for her meat diet. Is that unnatural? Chicken is usually the primary meat, lamb is good, too. They need veggies, but, not just veggies. Keep researching and you will find this out. I have an 11 yr. Good luck with your new family member! Answer by J D You can feed dogs some vegetables and fruits, but the bottom line is, dogs are instinctively meat-eaters. Most dry dog foods will compose of some form of meat and say rice or corn. When you walk down the dog food aisle at the supermarket what do you find? Canned foods that are either beef, lamb, or chicken. I feel that you may run into a problem if you try and force a dog to be a vegan. Even we humans need some form of meat protein for our survival. I do not believe that vegans are entirely the healthiest people out there. DO NOT feed your dog grapes. They are very bad for canines. Read More:. As a German Shepherd owner, you may wonder if this special breed can thrive on a vegan diet, given their known health-related conditions. As an omnivore, your German Shepherd can be vegan. As vegan food for dogs is, by definition, meat-free, it is natural that you may be dubious as to whether this diet would satisfy all the nutritional needs of your German Shepherd. We hope to answer all lingering doubts you may have as to whether German Shepherds can be vegan in this article to enable you to make an informed decision whether to go that route or not. The diet should start from the puppy stage to ensure that they grow into healthy, energetic dogs. Protein is a key requirement for muscle development and strength, and a balance of essential fatty acids and vitamins is particularly important in keeping your German Shepherd in good condition. Choosing to substitute meat and all products of animal origin for vegetables is a bold one and could jeopardize their health if their diet is not delivered judiciously. While, in nature, the likes of wolves and jackals kill for meat, domesticated dogs are different. They are omnivores as opposed to wolves, which are strictly carnivores. Compared with wolves in the wild, the genetic evolution of dogs has favored their ability to generate more starch-digesting enzymes. This points to their ability to digest non-meat products easily. The order Carnivora, into which dogs fall, includes many other omnivores like pandas, bears, and raccoons, all of whom can digest starch. Therefore, you may assume that German Shepherds could well be suited to a vegan diet. German Shepherds have many potential health problems that could be exacerbated by eating the wrong food, make sure you carefully consider these before putting them on a vegan diet. Source While there are many instances where dogs on a vegan diet have lived for 20 years or longer, the average lifespan of German Shepherds is 11 years. This is generally shorter than many other breeds due to their susceptibility to hip dysplasia. This normally leads to a weakening of the dog and results in a general decline in health. By giving your German Shepherd an inappropriate vegan diet, you could inadvertently be helping your dog to an early grave. Be aware that there are hazards related to a vegan diet for this breed. The main dangers include: Insufficient protein in the diet. Shortage of amino acids, particularly taurine and L-carnitine. The possibility of mineral and vitamin deficiencies. While the list could be longer, these are the most pertinent diet-related issues you need to consider. Male German Shepherds are known to develop silica stones, which are linked to the consumption of silicates. It causes inflammation of the bowels and makes the proper digestion of food difficult. Perianal fistulas are sores on the anus under the tail, possibly aggravated by the low tail carriage. Pancreatitis This is also common to German Shepherds. Malfunction of the pancreas causes a reduction in the enzymes required for the dog to digest its food. The pancreas also produces insulin and helps regulate the absorption of glucose. Hip Dysplasia And Joint Problems Unfortunately, hip dysplasia is hereditary and common to German Shepherds, even from the puppy stage onwards. Regulation of diet is important to prevent your dog from getting overweight and putting pressure on its back legs. Osteoarthritis is often prevalent in mature German Shepherds and is linked to an injury or normal body attrition in these energetic, large dogs. Coat Maintenance Being double-coated, German Shepherd owners know that coat maintenance is a full-time job. Regular brushing and a proper diet are the two most important contributing factors to a shiny, healthy coat. Essential fatty acids such as Omega oils and Vitamins A, C, and E are all required to ensure no hair loss and maintenance of a glossy coat. While you may be inclined to prepare a vegan meal for your dog that you think is appropriate or nutritious, experts would advise you against doing so. The inclusion of many foods that humans like to eat and can easily digest can be harmful to a German Shepherd. These include the likes of nuts, grapes or raisins, chocolate, onions, bread dough, and salty or spicy foods. The ideal vegan offering for your German Shepherd must be balanced and approved by health experts. Organizations such as AAFCO set standards and approve and accredit pet foods, so a vegan formulation should carry an appropriate stamp of approval. Source A balanced diet for dogs requires a range of 22 amino acids, and while they can only produce 12 themselves, their diet must provide the rest. As meat products are considered the ideal food to provide amino acids, vegan food should contain added artificial amino and fatty acids. As L-carnitine is an amino acid produced by dogs from eating meat, a supplement is recommended for German Shepherds, who need a strong muscle structure to support their weight and help negate the effects of hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis. Vitamin B is an extremely important supplement as it is key to assisting many body functions of your dog, including the digestive processes. Final Thoughts Like all other dogs, German Shepherds can live on a vegan diet that has been certified and approved. Still, since their normal diet consists of high levels of protein, you will need to stay vigilant to avoid dietary imbalances. It is recommended that you consult your vet first to ensure that the vegan food you choose is exactly right for your German Shepherd. Final Thoughts Artichoke Artichokes belong to the Asteraceae family of vegetables. They provide your German Shepherd with antioxidants, fiber, folic acid, magnesium, niacin vitamin B3 , potassium, and vitamin C. They also have a low fat and sodium content. They can also assist in settling irritable bowels. You can feed them to your German Shepherd raw, thereby ensuring they get the maximum amount of nutrients from the artichokes but dice them up into bite-size pieces before giving them to your dog. Only give your German Shepherd small quantities of artichokes. Asparagus Asparagus belongs to the Asparagaceae family of vegetables. Asparagus contains large amounts of folic acid, potassium, thiamin, and vitamins A and B6, which are all very good for your German Shepherd. Asparagus is also high in fiber, although this can make them difficult to chew and digest when eaten raw. In some cases, the raw asparagus stalks may be so difficult to chew that your German Shepherd tries to swallow them whole and may choke. Because you have to cook asparagus for your German Shepherd to be able to eat it, you can lose some of the nutrients, and it may be more beneficial to give them other vegetables that they can eat raw. Only feed your German Shepherd the tender stalk and tip of young asparagus. The asparagus fern is toxic to dogs, as are the small, red berries produced by flowering asparagus plants. If your German Shepherd ingests the inedible parts or variation of the asparagus plant, it will cause nausea, vomiting, and intestinal pain. Beets Beets, or beetroots as they are known in some parts of the world, belong to the Amaranthaceae family of vegetables. Beets contain iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, and vitamin C. Furthermore, the iron content can be useful if your German Shepherd suffers from anemia. Beets are high in fiber and can aid in digestion, although too much will cause diarrhea. Individual dogs can be allergic to beets, so make sure you introduce them slowly. Beets and beet greens contain calcium oxalate, which can be harmful to German Shepherds who suffer from kidney disease or are prone to developing bladder stones. Beets are acidic and starchy, so feed them to your German Shepherd in moderation. Bell Peppers Bell peppers belong to the Solanaceae family of vegetables. They come in three main colors: red, yellow, and green. Of these, the red bell peppers contain the most vitamins and antioxidants. If you add them, introduce them slowly and only ever feed them to your German Shepherd in small quantities. Remove the seeds and cook the bell peppers to increase their digestibility. Other peppers can be harmful to your German Shepherd, particularly the spicier varieties. Bok Choy Bok choy belongs to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables and is also known as Chinese cabbage. It contains antioxidants, fiber, magnesium, phosphorous, and vitamins A, C, and K. Bok choy can assist in promoting healthy immune, digestive, skeletal, and cardiovascular systems in your German Shepherd. Puppies can have trouble digesting bok choy as their digestive systems are still developing. As with all high-fiber foods, too much can lead cause diarrhea. Only feed the green parts of the leaves to your German Shepherd, and make sure you cut the leaves up small to prevent choking. Broccoli Broccoli belongs to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. They are low-fat, high-fiber vegetables and also contain vitamin C. You can give your German Shepherd raw or cooked broccoli, but only in very small amounts. The individual broccoli florets contain chemicals called isothiocyanates. These can be toxic to your German Shepherd in high doses, causing gastric irritation mostly manifesting as abdominal pain and flatulence. Additionally, the uncooked stalks of broccoli are choking hazards for German Shepherds, so make sure you cut it up into small pieces. Brussel Sprouts Brussel sprouts belong to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. Brussel sprouts are full of vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants that promote cardiovascular health including clotting and bone strength in German Shepherds. They are also anti-inflammatory and protect against free radicals. However, like broccoli, Brussel sprouts contain isothiocyanates, and large quantities will cause gastric irritation, including bloating, abdominal pain, and excessive flatulence. Brussel sprouts should be steamed or boiled before they are fed to your German Shepherd. They are too difficult to eat raw. Butternut Squash Butternut squash belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family and is technically a fruit, although they are used as vegetables. These squashes are great for your German Shepherd. They are low-calory, high-fiber vegetables containing beta carotene and vitamin A, vitamins C and K, and potassium. If your dog has an upset stomach, butternut squash is a good food to feed them. You should remove the seeds and tough rind of the butternut squash and cook the fleshy part without fats or seasoning, so your German Shepherd can easily digest it. Cabbage Cabbage belongs to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. It is full of vitamins C and K, which boost the immune system and help combat diseases in your German Shepherd. The high-fiber content of cabbages also aids in digestion, but too much can cause diarrhea. Cabbage has also been known to improve skin health. You should only give your German Shepherd cooked cabbage; raw cabbage is too difficult for them to digest. Cabbage should also only be fed to German Shepherds in small quantities. They contain the same chemical found in broccoli and Brussel sprouts, which causes gastric irritation when consumed at high doses. Carrots Carrots belong to the Umbelliferae family of vegetables. They contain folate, manganese, pantothenic acid, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and K. Carrots have a low calory count, but they are a good fiber source. Only give your German Shepherd small quantities of carrots. Folate is involved in producing red blood cells and is very beneficial if your German Shepherd is pregnant. Manganese, which is not found in meat, is used for energy production and maintenance of bone and joint health. Pantothenic acid is involved in supporting the metabolism. You can steam the carrots no seasoning to make them easier to eat and more digestible, but raw carrots are not bad for your German Shepherd. In fact, the crunchiness of raw carrots can be enjoyable for your German Shepherd and can also assist in their dental hygiene. Cauliflower Cauliflower belongs to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. It is a healthy source of calcium, fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamins K and C. Cauliflower is also anti-inflammatory and may be beneficial in the treatment of cancer. You should cook cauliflower before giving it to your German Shepherd, and only give it in small quantities to prevent your dog from getting gas; this will be unpleasant for you and your German Shepherd. Celery Celery belongs to the Umbelliferae family of vegetables. Celery is a low-fat, low-cholesterol vegetable. It is a great source of fiber, folate, manganese, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and K. Celery supports the digestive, immune, and renal systems of a German Shepherd and can benefit a pregnant female. The low-calory nature of celery makes it an ideal treat for German Shepherds who are on a weight-loss diet, and it can be used as a breath-freshener for your dog as well. You can give your German Shepherd raw celery, but you should cut it into small pieces to prevent choking. Corn Corn belongs to the Poaceae family of vegetables. Corn is a great source of vitamins, minerals, fiber, carbohydrates, and even protein. Corn is actually a common source of grains in dog foods. German Shepherds that are on a weight-loss diet should not be given corn. German Shepherds who have a grain intolerance or are prone to bloating should also not be given corn. You can serve your German Shepherd cooked corn off the cob. While the corn is fine in small quantities, the cob cannot be digested by German Shepherds, and it can also pose a risk of choking. Canned corn is not a good option. Cucumber Cucumbers belong to the Cucurbitaceae family and are technically fruits. However, we have included them in this list because few people know them to be fruits, and they are used as vegetables. Cucumbers contain biotin, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and lots of vitamins B1, C, and K. Their high water content means they are also very hydrating, and if you feed some to your German Shepherd straight from the refrigerator, cucumbers become a cooling, summer snack. You can feed cucumbers to your German Shepherd raw and with the skin and seeds. Eggplant Eggplants, also called aubergines or brinjals, belong to the Solanaceae family of vegetables. These vegetables are high in fiber and contain potassium and vitamins B and K. Eggplants can be inflammatory and should not be given to German Shepherds suffering from arthritis or kidney disease. Solanaceae is also known as the nightshade family of vegetables and should be treated carefully. They contain a chemical called solanine, which is toxic in high doses. Never feed your German Shepherd eggplant leaves as these contain higher levels of solanine. If you introduce them, start slowly and watch for signs of an allergy: nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Eggplant should be served cooked grilled, roasted, or baked as the raw plant is difficult to digest and does not taste very nice. Fennel Fennel belongs to the Umbelliferae family of vegetables. Additionally, it can help with dog-breath, indigestion, and flatulence. You should only feed fennel to your German Shepherd in small quantities. It can be fed raw. Green Beans Green beans belong to the Fabaceae family of vegetables. Green beans are one of the most common vegetables given to dogs. They contain calcium, iron, protein, and vitamins A, B6, C, and K. They can rather be thought of as healthy alternatives to dog treats. Green beans can be given to your German Shepherd raw, although they should be chopped up small to avoid choking. Steamed green beans are good as well, as long as they are cooked without fats or seasoning. You can even give your German Shepherd canned green beans, but you need to avoid the ones that contain salt. Lettuce Lettuce belongs to the Asteraceae family of vegetables. It is not dangerous for your German Shepherd, but it also not beneficial. It can be used as a source of low-calory fiber or treats. Cut up the leaves into smaller pieces to make digestion easier. And make sure you wash the leaves thoroughly to remove any dirt or harmful chemicals that may have been used on the growing lettuce. Okra Okra belongs to the Malvaceae family of vegetables. Okra is considered a cancer prevention food, not guaranteeing prevention, but supporting it. Another significant benefit of okra is its regulation of blood sugar levels. This means that you can use okra in the treatment of German Shepherds with diabetes under the guidance of a veterinarian. You should not feed your German Shepherd okra on a daily basis, and you should only feed small amounts at a time. Too much okra can upset the digestive tract. You can serve it raw or cooked no seasonings and not fried. Parsnips Parsnips belong to the Umbelliferae family of vegetables. Their positive effects on the renal system make them a good addition to the diet of German Shepherds who suffer from kidney disease. Parsnips can be served raw or cooked. If you give your German Shepherd raw parsnips, chop them up into small pieces, or shred them onto their food. But feed parsnips to your German Shepherd in moderation as they have a higher sugar content; you may also want to leave them out if your German Shepherd struggles with excess weight. Peas Peas belong to the Fabaceae family of vegetables, and they come in many varieties. They are good sources of protein, fiber, and antioxidants. They are packed with vitamins A, B, and K and contain minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. The antioxidants contained in peas promote healthy eyes, skin, and hearts in German Shepherds. Peas contain substances called purines, which produce uric acid. Raw or frozen peas are good; you should avoid canned peas because of the preservatives and sodium content. If you can eat the pea pod, then your German Shepherd probably can as well; the risk is that they can choke on the pods. Potatoes Potatoes belong to the Solanaceae family of vegetables the nightshade family. Potatoes contain vitamins like B6 and C and minerals like iron, magnesium, and potassium that are beneficial to your German Shepherd, but there are better sources of these in other vegetables. The main reason you would feed your German Shepherd potatoes specifically would be because of their high carbohydrate content. Because they belong to the nightshade family and contain the toxic compound solanine, you have to be very careful when feeding potatoes to your German Shepherd. Potatoes promote weight gain and should not be fed to overweight German Shepherds. The starchiness can also promote bloating in sensitive dogs. Never feed your god raw potatoes or green potatoes. Cook them without the skin and with no added fats or seasonings. Cooking potatoes reduces the solanine levels. Pumpkin Pumpkin belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family and is technically a fruit. Pumpkins are great vegetables to feed your German Shepherd. They are a source of antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin A. They promote cardiac and intestinal health. Like butternut squash, pumpkin can help to treat diarrhea, constipation, and other gastric complaints in your German Shepherd. Raw or cooked is fine to feed to your German Shepherd, although raw pumpkin will be harder to digest and should be cut into small pieces. The seeds are completely safe for German Shepherds and even contain their own nutrients that will benefit your canine friend. Radicchio Radicchio belongs to the Asteraceae family of vegetables. It is a low-fat source of folate and vitamin K, supporting the circulatory system and benefitting pregnant dogs. These vegetables are good for your German Shepherd in small quantities it can cause gas and diarrhea if given in large quantities , and you can serve it raw or cooked boiled, steamed, or roasted. As with other vegetables, never add any fats, sugars, or seasoning to radicchio you are cooking for your German Shepherd. Radish Radishes belong to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. They can be given to your German Shepherd raw, and like carrots, their crunch provides enjoyment and assists in dental hygiene. Only give in small quantities; radishes have a strong taste, and their high-fiber nature can cause excess gas and diarrhea. You might find that your German Shepherd has no interest in this mustard-tasting vegetable. As with humans, not every dog will find the taste enjoyable. Rutabaga Rutabaga belongs to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. Rutabagas are a hybrid of turnips and cabbage, and they are good sources of calcium, folate, potassium, and vitamins A and C. They are beneficial in fighting diseases and contain important antioxidants. You can cut rutabagas up into small pieces to feed raw to your German Shepherd, but this can be difficult to digest, so it is better to cook them. Spinach Spinach belongs to the Amaranthaceae family of vegetables. This leafy green contains antioxidants, beta-carotene involved in the production of vitamin A , fiber, iron, and vitamins A, B, C, and K. Spinach contains high levels of oxalic acid. This chemical inhibits calcium absorption and can lead to kidney disease. Your German Shepherd will probably have to ingest a large quantity of spinach for its kidneys to be damaged, but you need to be careful. Consult a veterinarian before feeding spinach to your German Shepherd and avoid feeding it to them if they have existing problems with their kidneys. You must cut the spinach up before feeding it to your German Shepherd. You can feed it raw, although it is harder for your dog to digest in this state. You should rather try steaming it; boiling it will remove all the nutrients. Never cook it with fats or seasoning. You should only feed your German Shepherd infrequent and small amounts of spinach. Sweet Potato Sweet potatoes belong to the Convolvulaceae family of vegetables. Sweet potatoes contain antioxidants, beta carotene, calcium, copper, folate, iron, potassium, thiamine, and vitamins A, B6, C, and E. They are also a good source of carbohydrates. Sweet potatoes are great for boosting the immune system, digestion, and overall health of your German Shepherd. They are also a healthier alternative to regular potatoes. If your dog suffers from obesity, diabetes, or pancreatitis, you may want to avoid this vegetable as the starchiness of sweet potatoes is a source of sugar. You will need to remove the skin of sweet potatoes and cook them baked or mashed before feeding them to your German Shepherd. Raw sweet potato is difficult for German Shepherds to eat and can cause intestinal blockages. Turnips Turnips belong to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. They are good sources of calcium, folate, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A, B6, and C. As with rutabagas, turnips are beneficial in fighting diseases and contain important antioxidants. They also stimulate proper kidney function and can be used in the treatment of kidney disease under the guidance of a veterinarian. Turnips can suppress thyroid function, so if your German Shepherd has problems with their thyroid, avoid giving them turnips. You can cut turnips up into small pieces to feed raw to your German Shepherd, but this can be difficult to digest, so it is better to cook them. Zucchini Zucchini belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, and so it is technically a fruit. Some veterinarians consider it one of the best vegetables you can feed your dogs. Zucchini is a good supporter of the eyes, muscles, bones, and immune system. It makes an excellent low-calory alternative treat for your German Shepherd. However, whole zucchinis can be a choking hazard, and too much can cause diarrhea. You can feed your German Shepherd raw zucchini, but first, chop it up into small pieces. If your German Shepherd is older and has difficulty chewing, you can steam it to make it softer. Do not feed your German Shepherd zucchini that has been cooked with fats and seasoning. They are called alliums because they make up the Alliaceae family of vegetables. Alliums contain a compound called N-propyl disulfide, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Symptoms of allium poisoning include lethargy, weakness, decreased appetite, pale gums, fainting, red-colored urine, vomiting, elevated heart rate, and excessive panting. You will need to seek immediate veterinary help for your German Shepherd if they are suffering from allium poisoning. All parts of allium plants and all forms raw, powdered, cooked, etc. Avocado Avocados are technically fruits, but as they are used as vegetables, we will discuss their potential toxic effects. Avocados contain a chemical called persin. Persin is mainly found in the leaves, skin, and pit of the avocado, but there is still a small amount in the fleshy part. Persin toxicity is characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, and damage to the myocardium. Although the exact dosage is not known, persin can be fatal to German Shepherds. Avocados have a high fat content and can cause weight gain, intestinal problems, and pancreatitis. The pits are also definite choking hazards. Chili Peppers And Jalapenos Chili peppers and jalapenos belong to the Solanaceae nightshade family of vegetables. Unlike other members of this family of vegetables, careful introduction and moderation will not make chili peppers and jalapenos an option for your German Shepherd. This is because of the capsaicin. Capsaicin gives these vegetables their spiciness, and while pleasant to some people, spicy foods are not good for dogs. Ingestion of chili peppers and jalapenos by your German Shepherd can cause pain, indigestion, nausea, and vomiting. Kale Kale belongs to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. Even though other vegetables in this family, such as broccoli, Brussel sprouts, and cauliflower, are safe for German Shepherds to eat in small quantities , you should avoid feeding them kale. Not only does it contain the intestinal irritant isothiocyanate, but kale also contains calcium oxalate, which can damage kidneys and promote the growth of bladder stones. Rhubarb leaves Rhubarb belongs to the Polygonaceae family of vegetables. Technically the rhubarb stalks are fine for your German Shepherd to eat in small quantities if they are chopped up, but the leaves are toxic. Rhubarb leaves contain oxalic acid, which causes drooling, diarrhea, lethargy, vomiting, and tremors. Tomatoes Tomatoes belong to the Solanaceae family of vegetables. Completely ripe, red tomatoes are not toxic to German Shepherds in small amounts, but green tomatoes and any other part of the tomato plant is toxic. The toxicity is due to the presence of solanine, which can cause gastrointestinal distress, tremors, seizures, and cardiac effects. Bear this toxicity in mind if you are growing tomatoes in your garden. Watercress Watercress belongs to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables. Excessive consumption by German Shepherds can cause thyroid and kidney damage. Even in smaller quantities, watercress can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Watercress grows in the wild, so make sure you know what it looks like before taking your German Shepherd on a country walk. Final Thoughts German Shepherds are omnivores, so their balanced diet includes vegetables. Whether you are looking to provide your dog with balanced, home-cooked meals, or you simply want to give them a healthy snack, it is important to know which vegetables are safe for your German Shepherd and which vegetables are dangerous. However, you also need to bear in mind that the quantity, part of the vegetable, and how it is cooked also determine how good it is for your German Shepherd. Some German Shepherds may have allergies that make certain vegetables toxic to them. Watch to make sure that your German Shepherd is not reacting. It is worth noting that, even though German Shepherds can eat a wide range of vegetables, they cannot be vegetarian, even if you are. If you do not want to feed your German Shepherd meat, speak to your veterinarian about a high-quality kibble containing all the nutrients they require.

As a experienced breeder, I pride myself in healthy, quality, social puppies. Serious breeders will tell you that the Pied Frenchie is one of the hardest combinations to perfect in breeding. Part of the concern is that the white pigmentation is often associated with some serious health concerns. The pied coat pattern is a recessive trait. This means that both parents must be pied or have the recessive genetics for pied coats in order to product the puppies that will have the desired coats. The potential for deafness Color-linked deafness is seen in quite a few dog breeds. One of the risks of breeding dogs that have a largely white coat is that they could potentially develop what is known as pigment-associated hereditary deafness. Reputable breeders will be well-aware of this risk. They will test all of their puppies before they go to new homes. Some dogs are prone to excessive shedding. Luckily, your Pied French Bulldog is not going to be an excessive shedder. Certainly he will shed on your clothing and furniture but it can be controlled. Brushing your dog with a brush mitt or with a soft-bristled dog brush every week can keep his coat looking its best. Brushing not only helps to minimize shedding but it helps to release the natural oils that will give his coat that healthy shine. Bath your dog once a month in an oatmeal-based dog shampoo. If he gets into something smelly or gets dirty then of course bath him more often. The potential for obesity Frenchies are muscular dogs with a heavy bone structure. This can make them prone to obesity. Even weight gain of just 5lbs can prove to be problematic for your little dog. Your Pied French Bulldog is not going to be the most energetic dog. These little dogs adapt well to life in an apartment, only going out once or twice a day to do their business. Unfortunately, this also means that they are perfectly happy being couch potatoes. Be sure to walk your dog at least twice a day. If you can play with him in the yard or take him to the park it will also be great for his continued good health. Be sure to also monitor his diet so that he eats just enough to provide him the nutrition that he needs for his current activity level. Post navigation. Their coat is a striking combination of blue and white, with a predominantly white body and blue patches on the eyes, ears, and body. The unique color of Blue Pied French Bulldogs is due to the presence of a dilution gene. This gene is responsible for diluting the base color of the coat, resulting in a lighter shade of the original color. In Blue Pied Frenchies, the dilution gene dilutes the base coat color to white, resulting in a predominantly white coat with blue patches on the eyes, ears, and body. The way the pattern is distributed and the proportion of the white and blue on the coat can be quite variable from Frenchie to Frenchie, making them really unique and beautiful! The dilution gene is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, which means that a dog must inherit two copies of the gene one from each parent to show the diluted coloring. If a dog inherits only one copy of the gene, it will have a normal, non-dilute coat. It is important to note that the dilution gene can also affect other coat colors such as black, chocolate, and fawn. The Blue Pied French Bulldog is a relatively rare color variant, which is part of what makes them so unique and sought after. Blue Pied French Bulldog puppies and adult dogs have a number of characteristics and traits that are important to consider when bringing one into your home. Here are some things to keep in mind. Blue Pied French Bulldog puppies are adorable and playful, but they require a lot of attention and training. Puppies need to be socialized from a young age so that they grow up to be well-adjusted and well-behaved dogs. French bulldog puppies can be prone to certain health problems, such as breathing difficulties and skin allergies, so it is important to choose a reputable breeder who carries out health screening on their breeding dogs, as we do at TomKings Kennel. The Blue Pied French Bulldog is a small breed, usually between 16 and 28 pounds and between 11 and 12 inches tall at the shoulder. They are known for their affectionate and playful personalities and make great family pets. The French Bulldog is a beloved breed for a reason, with proper care and attention they can become wonderful and loyal companions for years to come. The breeder is one of the main factors that can influence the price of a Blue Pied French Bulldog. We carry out a number of health screenings and genetic testing on our breeding dogs to ensure the health and quality of our litters. Location can also affect the price of a Blue Pied French Bulldog. Shipping costs can affect you if you buy a puppy from a breeder in another country or overseas. At TomKings, we take great pride in our high breeding standards, which are reflected in the quality of our puppies. Our team of livestock experts carefully selects genetically outstanding parents for breeding, which ensures that our French Bulldog puppies are healthy and strong. We prioritize the well-being of our puppies, and they grow up in a kennel-free environment that promotes good musculature, a strong immune system, and good manners. Our commitment to our puppies and their new families extends beyond adoption. We provide ongoing veterinary support for our TomKings owners, so they always have a reliable resource to turn to if their furry companion encounters any health issues. We strive to provide the best care and support to our dogs and their new families, even after they leave our kennel. Learn more. French Bulldogs are undeniably one of the most popular dog breeds across the globe. The American Kennel Club ranks them as the most popular dog in New York City and fourth-most desirable dog breeds in the world. The Frenchies are playful and alert, have pleasant and infectious personalities, adapt well to family life, are good around children, and get along well with other pets. Another unique characteristic of the Frenchies is the variety of coat color patterns they come in. There are many physical variations of these dogs, especially when it comes to coat colors. This means that if you prefer dogs of certain colors, this breed is sure to accommodate your preferences. If it is your first time to deal with Frenchies, however, picking out a new pup can be a little bit intimidating because there are so many terms that are used to describe different Frenchie coat color patterns. To help you choose the right pet, this post will focus on Pied French Bulldogs. We will cover what a Pied Frenchie is and what you can expect when you own one. Pied or Piebald Frenchies are French Bulldogs with predominantly white coats with large dark-colored patches on different parts of the body—mostly on the back, under the neck, and around the ears and eyes. In other words, for a Frenchie to be recognized as Pied, it must have at least 50 percent of patches or spots of white and another color. However, the spots or patches can also be dark gray, black, or brown. So: Fawn Pied French Bulldogs: May have a white coat with fawn patches or a fawn color with black patches. Cream Pied French Bulldogs: Have cream coats with fawn patches. Blue Pied Frenchies: Have blue coats with patches of white or cream. So, Pied can be said to be the exact opposite of Brindle. A dog has 39 pairs of chromosomes. Out of these 39 pairs, one pair is a sex chromosome—it is what determines whether a dog is male or female. Autosomal inheritance of a gene simply implies that a gene is located on one of the other 38 pairs of chromosomes. This means that both a male and female dog are equally likely to have the gene. Recessive means that a dog must inherit both copies of the gene to display the trait in this case, a pied coat pattern. Instead, he or she will be a carrier. Instead, you will end up with all solid colored Frenchies who are carriers of the Pied gene. Pied French Bulldog Grooming Needs Pied Frenchies are fairly easy to groom as all they need is occasional brushing to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils evenly, keeping their coats healthy. So, you can always schedule the hair combing tasks to weekends as brushing their coats once a week will just suffice. Here are also other great grooming tools that we recommend for Pied Frenchies: 25 Best Deshedding Tools for Short Hair Dogs Ear and facial wrinkles, as well as the areas under the tail of Pied Frenchies, are susceptible to dirt and dust. Strive to keep them clean and dry to prevent potential bacterial infection. Every time you clean them, take your time to dry the skin between the folds. Considering that Frenchies are not as active as other dog breeds, their nails tend to become uncomfortably long within a short period. Due to their brachycephalic shaped faces, they have narrow nostrils and shortened muzzles, which somehow limit the supply of oxygen to their bodies. Nevertheless, they are heavy-chested and need short-time exercise routines to keep their weight in check. Some of the best exercises for these cute, short-legged canines include daily short walks, chasing a hanging piece, catching a ball, etc. Getting them a motion-activated toy can also take care of their exercise needs perfectly. Their shorts and disproportionately large heads also make it hard for these little cuties to stay afloat in water. You should always take great care of your Frenchie when he is around swimming pools, rivers, and ponds. Related Posts: Barrel Chest Dog Breeds Pied French Bulldog Health Issues Brachycephalic Syndrome: Their brachycephalic shaped faces have serious health implications including narrow nostrils, obstructed airways, eye socket related issues, and dental problems. The condition can cause anything from loud or labored breathing, snoring, snuffing to collapse of the airway. Heat and Cold Intolerance: These dogs are susceptible to heat exhaustion and often need air-conditioned environments. If you live in cold regions, always dress your Frenchie with a winter jacket. Patellar Luxation: This is a common problem in small dogs, including Frenchies, and occurs when the patella is not properly aligned and luxates or slips in and out. Related Posts: 12 Best Luxating Patella Dog Supplements Potential for Obesity: Because of their heavy bone structures, even a slight weight gain of 5lbs can be problematic for these little cuties. Eye Conditions: French Bulldogs suffer from a wide range of eye conditions including entropion, juvenile cataracts, cherry eye, etc. Related Posts:.

Jim T. As English Bulldog Breeders, how do you breed for a healthier Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other bulldog breeders from improving the health of their Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes them unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities and produce high quality English Bulldogs for sale.
