Are White German Shepherds Rare? There are historical reasons for that. As mentioned earlier, the white coat gene is recessive in GSDs. That made it hard for breeders to produce litters of all White German puppies. Over time, whiteness became an undesirable trait in the GSD. Any surviving White GSDs were summarily slaughtered. In the s, the American Kennel Club disallowed the participation of American White Shepherds in conformation shows. Twenty years later, the Canadian Kennel Club would do the same thing. Despite or possibly because of the restrictions on white GSDs, breeders kept the dog alive. They both have erect ears, a square-cut jaw, a curvy yet athletic body, and a long brush-like tail. Males stand between 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder, while females are slightly smaller at 22 to 24 inches. Eye color is usually dark brown but can be anywhere between light amber to dark mahogany. We encourage farm visits to meet our wonderful moms, dads, and puppies. If moms are pregnant or still nursing because of biosecurity we reserve the right not to show them more than 10 miles away from home a whole new set of viruses and bacteria are carried on your person and puppies do not have immunity to those new viruses and bacteria. I love to see the faces of people when they meet our dogs for the first time! From a week before they are due they are at my side day and all night long. We do not allow the moms to deliver their own puppies, we are there to help them deliver their puppies to eliminate trauma for the mother and for the puppies. We are with the puppies and mom day and night for a week encouraging mom when puppies become too much, just like human moms. Dog moms need reassurance and help as well. Mom and puppies are kept in a confined area that is safe no other dogs are allowed in this area and kept at a specific temperature. Mom and puppy vitals are checked on a regular basis to ensure their health. After 2 weeks mom and puppies are moved to the nursery and given more space to move about and develop their muscle structure. Once the puppies start food they are placed on sheets of non-printed newspapers with shredded paper on top to ensure cleanliness, which is also changed daily.
