Quick story: We gave 2 of our 6 month old pups a chew treat. When pup 1 was finished with hers, she tried to get the treat away from pup 2. After 10 minutes of relentless trying, pup 1 was still not successful. So she went over by the door and rang the bell to go outside. When I got up and opened the door, pup 2 got up and went outside. Pup 1 walked over and successfully picked up the sought after chew toy. True story. Active and quite comical, they are a treat to be around. Read More About Our Australian Labradoodles and their origin This classic example of logical and planned crossbreeding was created in the country of Australia in the s. The goal of the Australian clubs is to create a new "breed" with the best attributes of the original breeds. The original objective was to produce assistance dogs that do not shed hair for people with allergies. Australians, on the other hand, have taken the Labradoodle a few steps further. In mid it was announced that the Australian Labradoodle was not just a Labrador x Poodle cross , but was a breed in its own right developed over many years with particular goals in mind. To accomplish these goals, further development was done with parent breed infusions added to the already blooming Labrador x Poodle cross lines. The developers of the breed sought out the best way in which to compliment the Australian Labradoodle breed, and to develop the authentic qualities that they find and love in these dogs. In the very first Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard was written which reflected these goals. The Australian Labradoodle currently consists of 6 different breeds in its origin. We truly believe our Australian Labradoodles are the best dog available and will make a great addition to your family. Conveniently located between Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago , we are here to help puppies find their forever home with your family. For more information on Australian Labradoodles contact the Midwest based Labradoodle experts at the Labradoodle Corral. All Rights Reserved. All this and more makes our labradoodle puppies for sale one the most in-demand in our center. Labradoodle puppies for sale are so cute and come in such a wide range of colors that it makes choosing your new best friend super-hard! While spearheading the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia breeding program, he conducted the crossbreeding of a standard poodle and Labrador retriever in view of it being a hypoallergenic guide dog for blind people. The first example of this type of dog, called Sultan, went to live with a lady in Hawaii, where other breeders saw him as an inspiration and this is how Australian Labradoodle puppies started. Both the International Australian Labradoodles Association and the Australian Labradoodles Association of America are working hard to incorporate more intergenerational breeding so these dog breeders can register this type of dog as a purebred dog. Its gentle, obedient and intelligent personality combined with a hypoallergenic coat make it ideal for family members with allergies, but it also makes an excellent service or therapy dog. Labradoodle Puppies Lifespan When properly taken care of, healthy dogs tend to live anywhere from 10 to 13 years. The lifespan of our Labradoodle puppies for sale is slightly above average at 12 to 14 years. Here are the life stages of multigenerational Australian Labradoodles: Puppyhood: First five months Adolescence: Between five months and two years Adulthood: Between two and three years Middle age: Between seven years and 10 years Senior: Over 10 years Labradoodles need the most attention and care in the first and last stages of their life. During puppyhood, their minds are highly impressionable, which is ideal for training. During their senior years, Labradoodles are more susceptible to health problems, which means owners need to keep a watchful eye. Labradoodle Size The size of labradoodle puppies for sale directly relates to the size of their parents and which generation of breed Labradoodle breeders chose. The larger the puppies, the larger the adult dog will be, and the faster their growth will be coming out of the puppy stage. A standard labradoodle puppy will weigh from pounds by the time it reaches two months of age. By a year old, it will have grown dramatically to up to 80 pounds, depending on the size of its parents. Medium Labradoodles occupy a spectrum of sizes between standard and mini Labradoodles, with the specifics depending heavily on the details of the breeding pair that birthed them and the breeding program they come from. Labradoodle Puppies Temperament While Labradoodle breeders originally bred the Australian Labradoodles as therapy dogs, their fun, friendly personalities made them popular pets. Now you can find these sociable dogs in homes across the globe. Here are some of the top personality traits of our Labradoodle puppies for sale. They tend to do best in active households where they can work off all that pent-up energy. You can fulfill their needs through the following activities: Walks or jogs: Labradoodles make great walking companions and can even keep up with you during a jog. Playing in the yard: Enjoy a game of fetch with your furry friend in the yard or just let it loose on its own. Dog sports: If you stay active through sports, consider making your labradoodle a part of your routine. Bring it on bike rides, go for a run together or kick a ball around in the yard. Obstacle courses: Set up an obstacle course for your dog using household items. Scavenger hunt: Creating a scavenger hunt for your canine is a great way to exercise its body and brain. In general, Labradoodles need anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day. You can also enroll them later at a Labradoodle puppy alumni school for proper training. Friendliness What makes Labradoodles the perfect puppy compare to other dog breeds is their ability to get along with just about anyone. They inherit this trait from their Labrador retriever parent, a breed also known for its outgoing nature. You can trust your labradoodle to form friendships with everyone, from children and older adults to strangers and other puppies. Thanks to their affectionate, sociable personalities, Labradoodles make great pets for first-time owners, families, or anyone looking for a companion. Intelligence Thanks to their poodle parent breeds, Labradoodles are incredibly intelligent dogs. Because Labradoodles are intelligent, they often crave mental stimulation. Labradoodle Puppies Grooming Our Labradoodle puppies for sale have a variety of coat textures that dog owners enjoy, but in general, their low shedding coat needs brushing at least twice a week. Not only does this keep them tangle-free but it also removes excess debris from their coat, keeping them fresh and hygienic. Regularly trim the hair around their eyes and in between their paws to prevent these problem areas from causing irritation. Pooches with fleece coats tend to have longer fur and benefit the most from going to a professional groomer — although every dog loves getting pampered once in a while. Based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Quasar Kennels breed boxer dogs and boxer puppies for sale, and provide information on the boxer dog breed. I have always had a love of animals, and was allowed my first dog at the age of 13, a Doberman named Rokko. I was introduced to the world of dog showing through him. I took him to a ribbon parade at the suggestion of some dog people won a ribbon and was hooked! Unfortunately things did not go well with Rokko and I had to let him go. It was some time before I was allowed another dog. In those early days with Rokko I used to admire a couple that used to arrive at the shows with a tribe of Boxers, and decided I would have one of those one day. I can still remember picking her up from the airport like it was yesterday; it was love at first sight. Tara was spoiled rotten, and as a result I gave her to close friends when I left home as she spent every minute I was at work howling, and barking! Kenya was the love of my life, and best mate. She was so loyal. Kenya is behind everything we have bred in our kennel. Our dreams came true when we purchased our lifestyle block in Ohoka where we have 3 cows, 25 or so sheep, a vast number of chickens, a cat and our boxers who enjoy the country life, and given the opportunity when Dad and mum are not looking chasing the odd chicken or two. In our quest for perfection our emphasis is not only on confirmation but also on health and temperament. We hope you enjoy looking at our dogs. Prevalence: Common Boxers are stocky, muscular and powerful. Males grow to about 25 inches and weigh from about 30 to 36 kilograms; females grow from about 21 to 25 inches and weigh from about 22 to 30 kilograms. Boxers have regal, distinctly shaped square heads. Their jaw is undershot and the muzzle blunt. They have a broad, deep chest and a relatively short, strong back. Boxer's ears fold over naturally, but traditionally, their ears have been cropped to stand erect. Their tails generally are docked and carried high. Their feet are compact and the toes are arched. The boxer's coat is short and sheds moderately. Some boxers are a rich, fawn color and others are brindle. Their face or mask is usually black, but many have white face markings and white on the chest and paws. Personality: Boxers are intelligent, high-energy, playful dogs that like to stay busy. Their temperament reflects their breeding. They prefer to be in the company of their owners and are loyal pets that will fiercely guard their family and home against strangers. They get along well with other animals if raised with them. However, boxers also have a reputation for attacking neighborhood dogs and cats if left to their own devices, so they should never be allowed to wander. Few boxers bark excessively. If a boxer barks, chances are there is a good reason. Many boxers are vocal, however, and make a growling noise that's really just the dog's way of talking. Living With: The boxer has a high need for companionship and exercise. If these needs are not met, boxers can be destructive if left alone in the house. Boxers are ideal for people who want a canine companion with them most of the time or for larger busy families with homes that are often occupied by someone. They can do well on a country estate or in a city apartment as long as they have the opportunity to romp and expel energy. If you live in an urban area, regular walks are necessary. Boxers are intolerant of hot weather, and care must be taken to prevent them from getting overheated. They also need protection from the cold since they are short-coated. Their coats, however, are very easy to care for and will be shiny and bright as long as they have a good diet, are bathed occasionally, and are given regular rub-downs with a grooming mitt or brushings with a rubber curry. Some boxers drool excessively, and some snort and snore. Like other larger dogs, boxers are not particularly long-lived. Their life expectancy ranges from about seven to 10 years. History: Boxers are descendants of extinct bullenbaiser breeds crossed with mastiff, bulldog and possibly Great Dane and even a terrier. They were developed in Germany in the 19th century, initially as bull baiting dogs and later as butcher's helpers, controlling cattle in slaughterhouses. Some breed historians say boxers are named from the German word boxl, their slaughterhouse designation. Other fanciers contend the name boxer comes from the characteristic way that they use their forepaws to play, sparring much like a human boxer. After the breed rose to become among the most popular in America. Boxers are considered working dogs. They were one of the first breeds employed as a police dog, and they have been used as seeing-eye dogs. But they are also bred to be companion and guard dogs, perhaps best known for being loyal family pets that are especially fond of children. Related Pet Care Articles. If you are in the process of choosing a puppy and the Boxer dog is on your shortlist, read on! The extinct Brabanter Bullenbaiser breed was crossed with the British Bulldog, and the Boxer was created. Early dog breeders tried unsuccessfully to create an all-black dog and instead settled on the fawn and brindle colours that we see today. The Boxer dog was bred for hunting, bull baiting and for controlling cattle in slaughterhouses. Later on, the Boxer dog was also used in the circus and theatres due to the breeds quick learning skills and intelligence. There is a contention with historians over where the Boxer got his name, but most agree it is from the English word Boxer and refers to the way the Boxer raises his paws and dances around when he is playing — very much like a human boxer! With this in mind, we rarely reproduce, and when we do, we do so with great care and consideration. The breed was developed by crossing various breeds, including the Bullenbeisser and the English Bulldog, to create an athletic and loyal dog. Originally used as a hunting and working dog, the Boxer became popular as a police and military dog due to its intelligence and trainability. They are a popular breed in many parts of the world, including New South Wales, and are known for their playful personalities and love of children. Cute Boxer puppies lying on his belly in New South Wales Tips When Choosing a Boxer Breeder When choosing a boxer breeder, remember several essential tips to ensure that you find a reputable breeder and a healthy, happy pup. Look up boxer breeders in New South Wales online, and read reviews from past customers. Make sure the breeder is transparent and willing to answer any questions you have about their breeding practices. Ask for Health Certifications Boxers are prone to specific health issues, such as hip dysplasia and heart problems. A reputable breeder will have their breeding dogs screened for these conditions and be able to provide health certifications. Ensure you ask for these certifications and check that the breeder is following best practices to ensure the health of their dogs. Check for Socialization Socialization is crucial for puppies, and a good breeder will have taken steps to socialize their pups from an early age. Do Boxers Make Good Pets? Yes, Boxers make great pets! Boxers are also brilliant and trainable, which makes them ideal for those who want to participate in obedience or agility training. They are incredibly loyal to their families and love to be close to their humans. Conclusion Finding a reputable Boxer breeder in New South Wales requires research and effort, but ensuring you get a healthy and happy pup is worth it. A well-bred and well-raised Boxer can be a loyal and loving companion for many years. Image Credits:. Any separation from you will be painful to me. Remember that before you buy me. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Place your trust in me. You have your work, your entertainment and your friends. I only have you. Talk to me sometimes. Remember before you hit me: I have teeth that could easily crush the bones of your hand, but I choose not to bite you. Before you scold me for being un-cooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old. Go with me on that final difficult journey. Print these guidelines out and take with you when looking for a puppy. To ensure that the breeder is not a "Puppy Farmer" or "Backyard Breeder".Ask the breeder. How long they have been in the breed? If this is their first litter, ask if they have a mentor a breeder who has been in the breed for many years that has assisted them in breeding this litter and choosing the best sire for their female, plus assisting them in nutritional requirements for the dam - pre and post whelping, and for the puppies? If this is not their first litter, ask how many litters they breed per year? Ask how many litters this dam has had? Ask if they are a member of a Boxer Club in their area? Or their mentor is a member. Ask if they show, or specialize in Obedience or Agility with their dogs. Or their Mentor does. Ask to look at the pedigree of the pups. Are there Champions close up in the pedigree? Champions do not guarantee that your pup will be perfect and ideal for showing, but it does guarantee that at least the breeders are trying to improve their breeding stock by breeding to quality animals. Check that both parents of the puppies offered for sale have been heart checked and have tested heart murmur free! If Holters are available in your country, then ask to see the parents scores, the lower the better - 0 is ideal , and if they have had their thyroid and hips scored, even better. Ask to view the relevant papers. Ask about the longevity of the puppies lines. Look at the pedigree and ask if the grandparents are alive and if not, how old where they when they died, and the cause of their death. The more dogs in the pedigree that lived past 10 years, accidents excluded the better chance your pup has to also live a long life. The puppies should look plump and healthy, with loose pliable skin, clear eyes, and a loose coat pull up the skin on the pups back to see if it very loose. Healthy pups at around weeks should have a "toasty" smell and fresh breath. All puppies should be friendly and playful, they must not be timid or cower in a corner. The environment where puppies are a kept is clean and light and airy, with room for the puppies to play. The mother has a very good temperament, playful and happy, not shy or aggressive and looks in good condition Bear in mind she may be a little thin and her coat may be sparse as she has just gone through feeding and rearing this litter, and she may also be a little protective if the puppies are still young. Be guided by the breeder on which pup would be the most suitable for your family situation. All pups have different temperaments and the most dominant puppy in the litter would not be the most suitable for children. Or the most layback puppy not suitable for a couple who lead very active lives. Ask if the puppies have been allowed into the house to allow then to become accustomed to household noises, and if they have been in contact with children as well as adults. All puppies must have been fully vet checked and received their first vaccination, and not leave their mother for their new home before a minimum of 8 WEEKS of age. A pup that leaves earlier has not had time to fully socialize with its siblings and develop a pack instinct, and may become dog aggressive as it grows. When you come to collect your pup you should receive a Puppy Packet which should contain.Advice sheet on how to care for your pup when you get home. This will require one training session a week for you and your family and 10 minutes a day reinforcement training. If you don't have the time for this training then do not get a Boxer! He will enthusiastically welcome most people you invite into your home but can be very reserved if he feels distrustful of certain individuals. Therefore he will make an excellent watch dog, his looks and barking will scare off any intruder, although little do they know that he is a "pussy cat" at heart. He can be stubborn and aggravating then turn around and delight and entertain you with his playful antics and exuberance for life. He will play gently with the young children, rough-house with the adults, then stand over you as if to say "come on you guys, I am just getting started". You can hurt his feelings easily by the tone of your voice or by ignoring him. Love him and your love will be returned ten fold. If he would not be allowed to live in the house as part of your family you would be better to choose another more independent breed. A BOXER does not have the coat needed for the cold winter and because of their shorter muzzle, they do not tolerate the heat of summer. They must be protected from the elements, always. Besides, they would be broken hearted if they couldn't be with their people - sharing the sofa or easy chair and your nibbles, as you all watch TV in the evening. Nutrition and Feeding Large breed dogs, as well as having large appetites, benefit from a different balance of nutrients including minerals and vitamins compared to smaller-breed dogs. Boxers are prone to bloating and stomach problems; smaller, more frequent meals can help minimise this risk. Grooming Boxers The Boxer dog's coat is easily kept clean, as it is very short. A rubber grooming mitt can be used once in a while to keep the coat in good condition. Any nose wrinkles need to be kept clean and dry. Training Boxers With their high-energy and juvenile behaviour, the Boxer needs on-going training from a very early age in order to be controllable and well-behaved. Thankfully this is a joy as they are clever and enjoy working with their owner so can easily be the stars of their training class. You do need to have a sense of humour though as the Boxer can get bored easily and will then have much more fun playing the clown instead! Best Family Dog Breeds Boxers make fabulous family dogs as they are devoted to all and are excellent with children. They can be overly-boisterous for smaller children however and so are better suited to older families. While many dogs are traditionally thought of as being good with children, all dogs and children need to be taught to get on with and respect each other, and be safe together. Even so, dogs and young children should never be left alone together and adults should supervise all interactions between them. They got their first Boxer as a wedding present - then followed that up by getting two more. Similar breeds:.

History Where are German Shepherd Dogs from? Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd. Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence. During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. How big do German Shepherd Dogs get? The double-coat, with a thick undercoat that sheds twice annually, loses hair continuously but can be maintained with regular brushing one or two times weekly. What are the German Shepherd Dog colors? Black, tan, solid black and solid sable. How long do German Shepherd Dogs live? Lifespan: 10—12 years What are some German Shepherd Dogs facts and information? The German Shepherd held the number one spot in American popularity for many years. Although presently it has dropped from the top spot, the German Shepherd remains as one of the most versatile dogs ever created, serving as a police dog, war dog, guide dog, search-and-rescue dog, narcotics- or explosives-detecting dog, show dog, pet—and even shepherd. Related Content. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.

Life Span Did You Know? A Labradoodle is a popular designer dog breed. It is a cross between a Standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. This designer dog breed originated in Australia around .The main goal of the Labradoodle was to create a hypoallergenic guide dog for people living with disabilities who were also allergic to dog fur and dander. Now, they are still a popular choice for service, guide, and therapy dogs and are also a popular companion dog. Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are both friendly, gentle, intelligent, and affectionate dog breeds. The Labradoodle tends to be similar. They are open and friendly and crave human attention and affection. They are happiest when they are with people. Labradoodles also tend to have an energetic and playful personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and strangers. They are alert enough to bark or let you know when someone is at the door, but they are not generally good watchdogs or guard dogs as they are more interested in making friends. A Labradoodle is a highly adaptable dog breed. They do very well in homes with space to run and they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat and cold. Because they enjoy being around people, they do not generally like to be left alone for long periods of time. They can also become bored if not given enough attention, exercise, or mental stimulation, which can result in destructive behavior. This dog breed is generally healthy, but they do have the chance of inheriting common health conditions from both of the parent breeds. Some health conditions to be aware of include elbow and hip dysplasia, ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and epilepsy. Good breeding practices can reduce the likelihood of passing on many of these health issues. Be sure to talk with the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and ask to see any health clearances; this can help allay potential health concerns. A Labradoodle tends to be eager to please and highly intelligent, which makes them highly trainable. They are a good fit for dog owners of any experience level. As with most dog breeds, Labradoodles respond best to training that is consistent and uses positive reinforcement. There are some grooming tasks that are common to every dog breed. When it comes to coat care, it can vary with a Labradoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that is also high maintenance in terms of brushing, trimming, and professional grooming. Labs tend to have a higher shedding coat that needs minimal brushing and grooming. For the most part, a Labradoodle will have a low or non-shedding coat that will need to be brushed a few times a week. But, they can have a higher shedding coat should they take after their Labrador parent. You may also need a few professional grooming sessions throughout the year. Nail trimming once a month is usually enough to keep movement comfortable and prevent longer nails from snagging on things. Proper dental care for your dog will help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Drop-down ears are more prone to infection because floppy ears are more likely to trap moisture, dirt, and debris. This will make grooming throughout their life a much more enjoyable process for both you and your dog. It can even become a bonding time for you both as well. Labradoodles tend to be high-energy dogs. They require a few daily walks plus some time to run and play in order to stay happy and healthy. They certainly love to play and you may tire out before they do sometimes. They may calm down a little as they get to be a couple of years old, but they tend to be quite energetic as puppies. Going swimming with your dog , taking a hike with them, going on a trip to the dog park, playing a game of fetch, and more are all great supplemental activities to ensure your Labradoodle gets plenty of exercise. You can even train them to compete in dog sports like dock diving, flyball, agility, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Labradoodle will usually stand between 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Labradoodles generally live 12 — 14 years. This means that your Maltipoo can also come in many different colors and, as they are a designer breed, most likely will be unique in their colorway and design! You Maltese Poodle Mix could be black, blue, grey, brown, cream, silver or white, although the most common colors are a light beige or white. Temperament The Maltese Poodle is a true companion dog who loves to be around people and thrives on human attention. They are very loyal to their owners and will care for you as much as you care for them. That being said, they love all people they meet and will want to be friends with everyone! Fortunately, separation anxiety can be helped with socialization from a young age. The Maltipoo is also a playful dog. Although they do not have a high activity level, they are very intelligent and require mental stimulation. They will love to play with you and have known to be mischievous from time to time! Lifespan The typical life expectancy of a Maltipoo is around 12 to 16 years. Known Health Issues Unfortunately, as with any dog, the Maltese Poodle mix can develop some health issues. They inherit these health problems from their parent breeds and can, therefore, be more susceptible to issues the Maltese and Poodle are. The most common health problems with the Maltipoo are set out below: White Shaker Syndrome — this is a syndrome that is common in small dogs and causes the whole body to shake. It is caused by an inflammation in the brain which is idiopathic. Some owners mistake this for their dog just being cold but if you suspect they are suffering from white shaker syndrome, you should take them to the vets. Patellar Luxation — this is a common condition in smaller dogs and is caused when the patella is not properly aligned. This can cause lameness in the leg or an abnormal gait, sort of like a skip or a hop. Epilepsy — this seizure disorder can be treated with medication. Progressive Retinal Atrophy — this is an eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. Buying from a reputable breeder will help to reduce health issues in your Maltipoo. You should also watch out for any signs of the issues about and take your pup for regular health checkups. Daily Life Now we have learnt all about the characteristics of a Maltese Poodle Mix, it is time to take a look at what everyday life with one of these pups is really like. Below we cover their food and diet, their exercise needs and their grooming needs. The general rule is 40 calories per pound of body weight per day, which can average out to around calories or one cup of food a day. However, you should always check the bag of the food packet to see the exact amount of that particular food you should be feeding your pup based on their size. It is recommended that you do not feed your Maltese Poodle in one go and instead break up their food into three to four meals a day. The food you give them should be high-quality dry kibble that is formulated for smaller breeds of dog, so you are sure they are getting the correct amount of energy, protein and fat. Your dog will function at his best with enough protein. Without adding any grains, their recipes are created with the assistance of doctors to provide your dog the ideal ratio of protein and fat. Each batch is checked to ensure it meets our high standards, and high quality ingredients are mixed in the USA for quality control. These pups should be getting between 30 to 40 minutes of exercise everyday. This can be split over games, walks and runs to keep them engaged and entertained. Your Maltipoo will also benefit from mental stimulation. Because they love to spend time with you, playing games with you indoors will be their favorite pastime. Family Compatibility The Maltipoo is a pup that adapts to any situation and makes the perfect family pet. A loyal companion, they are also excellent with couples, seniors and individuals. Because they are a little dog, they are also great for apartment and town living and their exercise needs are small they do not require a large yard to run around in. These dogs get on very well with other animals and will do well in a home with other pets. They are easy to train and socialize too, which means they are a good dog to have if you do not have experience with pups. The Maltipoo does well with children, but because of their size they are very vulnerable and delicate. You will need to teach your young children to be careful with this hybrid dog otherwise they could hurt them! The Maltese Poodle Mix is a lap dog that requires a lot of attention and you must ensure you have the time to spend with your Maltipoo before you buy them! They do not do well when they are left alone and like to be around people. When they are left alone for too long they can begin to exhibit destructive behaviors, so you must make sure you have time to curl up with them on the couch or, even better, take them with you wherever you go! Training and Socializing Both the Maltese and the Poodle are intelligent dogs who love to learn. Therefore, the Maltipoo is a dog that is easy to train. You must be patient and consistent with them, but they will pick up basic commands very easily. You should always use positive reinforcement with your Maltese Poodle hybrid. This includes verbal praise and treats. Never use punishment with them. Because they are so devoted to their owners, they will not understand and be hurt and confused, which can lead to destructive behaviors. You should do it from a young age and introduce them to lots of different sounds, sights, places, smells and people. Luckily, this breed of dog love both humans and other pets. Grooming The Maltese Poodle Mix is a generally easy dog to take care of, although they do need to be groomed often. This is because of their beautiful coat! Whether they have the curly coat of a Poodle or the longer coat of a Maltese, you will need to brush their fur almost every day. This is especially important if they have the curlier hair of a Poodle because matting can occur and this can become uncomfortable for your pooch. Their coat will need to be professionally groomed every 6 weeks or so to keep them looking their best. Their ears will also need to be checked and their nails should be clipped by the groomers. Dental hygiene is also important for your doggie to prevent gum disease and dental decay. Try to brush their teeth as often as you can to keep any health problems at bay. Regular grooming from a young age will reinforce the bond you have with your Maltipoo. Maltipoo Breed Traits. There are three ways to make a miniature dog, all of which have a degree of controversy and notable drawbacks. Breeders can add other smaller dogs into the mix, introduce dwarfism genes, or breed from the smallest puppies, or runts of the litter. Mixing with Smaller Breeds One of the methods of breeding a teacup Maltipoo is by breeding the standard Maltipoo with a different, smaller breed. The advantage of this is that it can reduce the risk of puppies developing predisposed health issues by increasing genetic variety. Plus, crossing two breeds is a game of chance. There is no guarantee a micro Maltipoo dog bred this way will look like a Maltipoo. It may instead look more like its other parent breed. Here are some crossbreeds commonly advertised as teacup Maltipoos by breeders. Maltipoo Maltese Mix One way to make a smaller Maltipoo which still matches its name perfectly is by breeding with a particularly small individual from the parent breed. The smallest Maltese can weigh as little as 5 pounds, whereas a Maltipoo born from an average sized Maltese and Toy Poodle could easily weigh more than 10 pounds. But it also increases their chances of inheriting certain predisposed health issues. These include heart abnormalities, liver issues, and luxating patella loose kneecaps. So it makes sense that breeders often crossbreed with the smallest Poodle to create the teacup dog. Toy Poodles are the most popular choice. As with the other mix, a teacup Maltipoo bred this way is more likely to resemble a Poodle. Toy Poodles are intelligent and loving. But they are also at risk of passing down predisposed health issues such as hip dysplasia and eye conditions. Maltipoo Chihuahua Mix Chihuahuas are the smallest recognized dog breed, making them a viable choice for breeding the teacup Maltipoo. Standing at only 5—8 inches tall, their offspring is likely to have the teacup size. Chihuahuas have charming temperaments but can be a bit stubborn, a trait which the Maltipoo mix can inherit. There is a chance a Maltipoo Chihuahua mix will inherit these problems. Bear in mind that a teacup Maltipoo bred using this method may resemble a Chihuahua more than a Maltipoo. Introducing Dwarfism Gene Another way to get teacup Maltipoos is by introducing the dwarfism gene. Dwarfism is a condition that restricts growth, resulting in a dog with a small body and legs. Normally dwarfism occurs due to mutations. But breeders may purposely breed dogs to have it to give them the teacup size. Breeding From Runts Finally, the last method for breeding teacup Maltipoos is by breeding two runts together. A runt is the smallest and least developed member of a litter. Runts are often sickly and more vulnerable than the rest of their littermates. By breeding them together, breeders achieve the teacup-sized dog, especially over a couple of generations. Teacup Maltipoos bred this way have an increased likelihood of developing immune system problems and heart conditions later on in life. Teacup Maltipoo Appearance The appearance of a teacup Maltipoo will depend on the way their small size is created. If a mini Maltipoo is made by mixing a Maltipoo with a smaller breed, they could look more like either parent. Teacup Maltipoos with dwarfism will have shorter legs and larger heads. And those made by breeding runts are most likely to look like smaller versions of the two parent dogs. Mini Maltipoos will be small dogs. Both the Poodle and Maltese parents are known for having beautiful fur, so expect this in your mini version! The best way to predict what your puppy will look like is to take a look at the parents. How Big Are Teacup Maltipoos? Generally, these tiny dogs will grow to be under 10 pounds as adults. The name teacup comes from the tiny size of these pups. So, most mini Maltipoos will be small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. But, there will still be variety among individual puppies, depending on how they were bred. The best place to look for a prediction of what your Maltipoo will be like is the parent breeds. This dog is a miniature version of an already mixed breed. So, even standard Maltipoos may be more like a Poodle or a Maltese. In general, these little dogs will be friendly, intelligent, and loyal. The Appeal of Miniature Dogs Teddy bear dogs have been a huge trend in recent years. And the mini Maltipoo fits that bill with its large dark eyes and wonderful soft fur. For some people, the practical aspects of having a tiny dog are also an appeal. Smaller size typically means less exercise is required. They also take up less space, which might suit someone with a small apartment. Small dogs also eat less, and even if they do shed, the amount of visible lost hair is less. Potential Problems The teacup Maltipoo will be prone to the same health issues as a regular Maltipoo. But, there are some other problems linked specifically to the size of this dog. Fragility Miniature dogs like this will have fragile bones and bodies in general. This means they are vulnerable to broken bones, and other serious injuries if they are handled incorrectly. Brain Problems Teacup dogs like the mini Maltipoo are prone to problems with their brain. This problem puts pressure on the brain, causing symptoms such as seizures, blindness, or altered gaits. Surgery or lifelong medication is often the only solution. On top of this, tiny dogs can be more prone to increased stress and poor mental health. These dogs need calm environments to lead the happiest lives possible. Heart and Bladder Defects Their tiny size means that teacup dogs like the mini Maltipoo are also prone to heart disease. Common problems include enlarged heart and dilated cardiomyopathy. Having such tiny organs means that miniature dogs like this can also struggle with incontinence. Their bladders are simply too small to hold on for long periods of time. You should also be aware of and watch out for liver shunts and hypoglycemia low blood sugar. General Care Because of their many potential health issues, a teacup Maltipoo needs a family that can provide plenty of care. They will need a good quality dog food, possible one designed for small breeds, regular exercise, and a calming environment at home to minimise stress. Mini Maltipoos will need regular grooming to keep their fur looking its best. They need plenty of company. But, they should never be left with someone inexperienced, or too young to know how to handle such a delicate little dog. Teacup Maltipoo Puppies Mini Maltipoo puppies will be tiny dogs. So, they need plenty of care and really delicate handling. As small teddy bear dogs are so popular, you might have to pay quite a bit in order to get a puppy. Dogs from puppy mills are more likely to have serious health problems in the future. You can find the healthiest puppy possible by going to a reputable breeder. But as the teacup Maltipoo is not a recognized breed, finding one might be a struggle. Is this true for the Maltese Poodle hybrid? Most pet allergies are due to dander—dead skin flakes—not any particular kind of fur. Low Shedding Breeds Certain breeds like Poodles have less dander and shed less than other breeds. This can be good for people with allergies. The Maltese Poodle cross, like the Poodle, also does not shed much. It is frequently listed as one of the more hypoallergenic dog breeds. So this is all good news for Maltese Poodle mix lovers! Your pup will not shed fur and dander as much as other dog breeds , and could be a good choice if you have allergies. But this is by no means a certainty. Be sure to spend time with Maltipoos in their home environments to see how you react before bringing one of these puppies into your home. Make sure to check their ears regularly for any excess wax. And keep on top of their nails with nail clippers or grinders if needed. Choose a high quality food. Although the Poodle has curly fur and the Maltese has straighter fur, both Poodles and Maltese have long coats. They require weekly grooming. As well as regular baths and trimmings. Are They Good Pets? The Maltese and Poodle mix, is well known as a sweet and loving companion animal. Both Poodles and Maltese dogs are known for their engaging and charming personalities. With the Poodle getting high marks for smarts and the Maltese for affection. Being a mix, your puppy could grow up to be more like her Poodle ancestors. Or more like her Maltese ones. As with any cross breed the outcome is not predictable. So you need to be certain that you love both Poodle and Maltese temperaments before you choose this puppy. Make sure to meet both the Poodle and Maltese parents. And make sure they both have temperaments you would be happy to share your life with. These chasmatic, intelligent little dogs will thrive in an environment where someone is around for much of the day. With owners who are committed to training, socialization and regular exercise. As well as a whole lots of love. You will need to make sure you find a good breeder, that health tests there stock. And would be advised to go for a Miniature rather than Toy mix, as they are less likely to be so small and fragile. Maltipoo personality can be as gorgeous as their appearance, and these lovely little dogs can make wonderful pets. Maltipoo Barking Like many small dogs, Maltipoos have a tendency to bark. There is much you can do to reduce barking and avoid it becoming a problem. Try to ignore your Maltipoo puppy when they bark for attention or because they want you to give them something. Instead, reward your puppy for desirable behaviors such as sitting quietly, or just standing quietly with all four paws on the floor. Training Small Breeds New owners should be aware that Maltese Poodle hybrids can bark more than other dogs. Or introduced very gradually and gently to staying alone. This is not a quick process, so do plan to be around for the first months your pup is with you! Like all dogs, this breed needs good training and socialization from puppyhood on. Start housetraining your puppy right away. Other forms of socialization and training can start early too. The most common behavioral problems you will want to focus on are barking, separation anxiety, and jumping. Socialization will help to avoid any unwanted aggression towards other dogs and people. Exercise Needs To stay happy and healthy, the Maltese and Poodle cross will need regular exercise. Their small size can mean they seem suitable for smaller homes, but even a dog this small needs the opportunity to stretch its legs. Make sure your pup gets outside for a walk, run, or some busy training games, on a daily basis. They might also enjoy swimming! Do be aware that, extra small toy breeds can have issues with fragile bones, which can affect their safety when exercising. You can read more about this in the health section below. Health Issues There is a wide belief that cross bred dogs are automatically more healthy than pure bred dogs. Regular mixing of genes will definitely make our dogs healthier as a group, in the long run. But a first generation cross like a Maltipoo may be at risk of inheriting health problems from both its parents. A Maltese Poodle mix has the potential to inherit health problems from both or either parent. Make sure the parents have had all the usual health tests recommended for their breed, before purchasing a pup. March 15, Table of Contents Maltipoos — Adorable designer pups Maltipoos are dogs that result from crossing a Miniature or Toy Poodle with a Maltese. The Maltipoo has yet to be recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club and other organizations across the world. Most dogs have a fluffy and wool-like coat, though, which is one of the features they are most appreciated for. How big does a Maltipoo get? This is a relatively small breed. Adults get to a height that ranges from 10 to 12 inches, depending on their gender and genetic inheritance. Most have a weight between 10 and 20 pounds, also depending on their gender, whether they were spayed or neutered, and if their parents were smaller or larger. If you are looking for an especially small Maltipoo, you should pick a female and also ask your breeder for a cross of two smaller parents. If you are looking for a larger dog however, make sure to pick a male puppies from parents that are on the larger side. Genetics are strong when it comes to size! Temperament The best thing about a Maltipoo is that it usually inherits the personality of its parents. However, like any other breed, whether mixed or not, this one needs to be socialized as early as possible. Another Maltipoo personality trait that dog owners love is that they can be quite affectionate. They do tend to suffer from separation anxiety when left alone for many hours during the day, so if you tend to be away from home for more than 10 hours on a daily basis, this might not be the right dog for you. Are Maltipoos easy to potty train? Most Maltipoos are very easy to train, especially if some of the training was done by the breeder. Praise and repetitive routines offer the best results when it comes to potty training a Maltipoo. For more information on house training your Maltipoo, talk to an experienced trainer. Is a Maltipoo a good dog? Most dog parents seem to agree that Maltipoos make not good, but great dogs. On top of everything, a Maltipoo maintains their puppy temperament even in their senior years, which can be very refreshing. Are Maltipoos barkers? Some Maltipoos can cause problems if they are adopted from inexperienced or irresponsible breeders. All puppies have to be trained to some extent in order to maintain good behavior, especially in relation to other animals and people. As we previously mentioned, they do not do well when they spend a lot of time alone. Unfortunately, that can be a problem for most pet owners unless they live in a house and have a yard where the dog can have some fun while they are away. On the other hand, they cannot be considered a hypoallergenic dog breed. They do shed several times a year, and their coat should be groomed every months depending on whether it is curly or not. Some Maltipoos have fluffy or curly hair around their eyes, so the latter can sometimes get irritated. If you ever try to cut some of the fur around the eyes, make sure to cover them with your hand first. Others prefer a lamb cut or a fancier style such as the Miami cut. Do Maltipoos have health problems? Unfortunately, the answer to this question is yes.
Even if another dog seems aggressive towards them, it will take a lot to set the Goldendoodle off. However, they can be triggered on occasion. Most of the time, when a Goldendoodle is aggressive towards other dogs , it is because the Goldendoodle has never really socialized with dogs in the past. This is something that they really should be trying to do from a young age; otherwise, it causes tons of issues. As long as you start your Goldendoodle interacting with other pups from a very young age almost around the time you get them , then they should be fine. Of course, hindsight is a good thing. If you do not own a time machine and we are .This means that you will need to come up with some other solutions for dealing with the problem. You may not want to have your dog running up to meet others right away. Instead, keep them on a leash and try to keep a distance. Over time, when your dog seems to stop showing those aggressive behaviors, you can increase how close you get to other dogs or increase the number of dogs your pet will meet. At the same time, you will want to attempt to avoid any situations that could potentially be a high-risk situation for your animal. For example, if you find that your dog always seems aggressive towards a particular dog, steer clear of them. If your dog seems to be possessive of a particular area, then steer clear of that. You will start to learn what triggers your dog. Positive Reinforcement As with all dog training, you need to ensure that you only utilize positive reinforcement. What does this mean? Suppose your dog is not aggressive in a situation that they would typically be aggressive in. In that case, you will reinforce that behavior positively. This will generally be praise and maybe a few treats. If they do a negative behavior, you ignore it. You just ignore it. Over time, they will start to associate good behavior with rewards and associate the negative behavior with being ignored. It is crucial to avoid using negative emotions towards your dog when they are being aggressive. We are not going to lie to you here. If you have an aggressive Goldendoodle, it will take a while to deal with the problem. There is no overnight solution. You need to be patient and take things step by step. Do small things at a time. Expect it to take weeks, sometimes months. However, we can assure you that if you do have a Goldendoodle that is aggressive around other dogs, it will be trained out of them eventually. Goldendoodles make fantastic family pets. This is because they do not have a bad bone in their body. Now, obviously, we would not recommend that you leave a Goldendoodle alone with your child. However, we would say the same about every other dog out there. However, in normal circumstances, your dog is going to be okay around children. However, you do need to remember that a Goldendoodle is a living animal. The same goes for your child. If your child is not taught how to behave around the Goldendoodle and treat them with respect, then there is a strong chance that your child will do something wrong. For example, they may not spot the warning signs that the Goldendoodle does not like something. A kid may also try to take a bone or a toy away from the Goldendoodle. It happens. It is the child. Thankfully, once you have taught them how to respect the dog, things will become easier. You may need to ensure that your Goldendoodle is familiar with children and used to their unpredictability. This is important if you have a new child in the household. You can use the same exposure therapy that we mentioned previously. Aggressiveness Around Food We are not going to lie here. This is the one area that you may find serious issues with your Goldendoodle. The same applies to all dogs. Remember, dogs have been bred from wild animals. Wavy coat Goldendoodles are typically low shedding. This means that they still have that inherent desire to be possessive of their food. This means that you will likely need to take care of when your dog is eating. If the dog does seem to be a bit aggressive around food, then the following tips and tricks have been proven to work: Ensure that your dog is eating enough Do not allow the dog to eat until you say so. For example, you may want to ask them to sit before placing the bowl on the floor. They cannot move unless you let them move. If the dog is aggressive when you touch their bowl, do not back away. Keep taking that bowl. They will learn. You do not want to reward them for their aggressive behavior, right? There are several reasons why your Goldendoodle may turn aggressive. We want to go through some of the more common of them. B y understanding why your Goldendoodle is aggressive, it becomes a lot easier to deal with the problem. Fear If a dog feels that it is scared or under threat, then it will be aggressive. It is only natural for the dog. It wants to protect itself and you, the pack leader. Confusion Goldendoodles can become confused when they are in unfamiliar surroundings, and something unexpected happens. This could be fireworks. A knock on the door. The same may occur if somebody comes into your home that the dog has not met before. Are Goldendoodles Aggressive while on the leash Goldendoodles who have not been taught how to walk with a leash can be a bit more prone to being aggressive. They may start to pull on the leash, or they may growl or bark when on it. They may be aggressive towards other dogs. This is why it is so crucial that you work on the leash bits and pieces from a young age. Anxiety Goldendoodles can be aggressive if they are suffering from anxiety. For example, if they have separation anxiety or they are in an unfamiliar situation. This can overlap with the confusion and fear causes that we just discussed. Resource Guarding Remember what we said earlier about how dogs may become aggressive around food? Well, this is known as resource guarding. It can also happen with toys. Whenever the dog has something that they feel is important to their wellbeing, they will protect it. This will often be in an aggressive manner. You need to train this behavior out of them. Pain or Illness This is rare. However, many dogs, when they are sick, will become aggressive. If there seems to be no other cause, then a trip to the vets would be a safe bet for you. Never raise your voice around your dog You must try to avoid raising your voice around your dog. This applies even if you are not yelling at your dog directly. By yelling, you are creating a scary situation for your animal. Only ever use positive reinforcement We did mention this earlier, but we really want to drill the point home. It is important that you only ever use positive reinforcement around your dog. Never punish them for anything outside of ignoring them. Otherwise, you will just be installing a sense of aggression in them. The most aggressive dogs will be the ones that have been treated aggressively, to begin with. Mental Stimulation A lot of Goldendoodles only feel aggressive because they are not mentally stimulated enough. So, get your dog some puzzle toys or a selection of different toys. It will really help them out. Regular training can also go a long way towards stimulating their mind too. Regular exercise If your dog is not getting enough exercise, then this could result in aggressive behaviors. So, take your dog for multiple walks per day. This will help to tire them out, and, ultimately, this will result in them being nowhere near as aggressive. Remember, Goldendoodles are not naturally aggressive. If they have an aggressive streak, then this could indicate that there is something wrong. Try to stamp out the behavior as fast as you can. We promise you, though. They will go eventually. Naturally, many of us may have kept a certain distance on occasions when we hear a growling dog. This begs the question — does it automatically signal aggression when you hear your dog growling? Why do dogs growl? For dogs, growling is a way of communication. From expressing their pleasure as you rub their belly to snarling at another dog, there are several possible reasons why your dog growls. As stated in a study , dog growls express various contextual and affective content for humans. Stop Googling - Ask a Real Vet While the sounds might be similar, it helps to take notice of the nuances. Reasons Why Dogs Growl or Snarl Take a look at the possible reasons why dogs growl, what it means, and how you can adequately address this behavior. Threat or Fear This type of growl with a low volume and a deep, rumbling sound usually happens when a dog feels scared, possessive, or threatened. It is a warning growl that indicates their discomfort in a particular situation. For example, some dogs may suddenly growl when there are strangers or new people in your home because they may feel threatened and are being territorial. Another example is dog growling when they are in an unfamiliar place or when they hear scary sounds such as thunderstorms. Or maybe they growl when you come near while eating their meal, which is a sign of resource guarding. This kind of growl is a warning to back off. Oftentimes, this growl is accompanied by a closed mouth, no breathing, a stiffened body, and dilated pupils. It usually starts in a subtle manner, but may escalate if they feel a prolonged threat. If you hear this growl, observe what is causing it and remove the cause if possible. In some cases, you might need some help from a trainer or animal behaviorist to address the behavior. There is usually no need to fret. For example, they may bend forward with their behinds raised, and they may show bounding movements or a relaxed demeanor. This type of growl often occurs when dogs are playing with each other or when tug toys are involved when you play with them. Frustration Another possible reason for dog growling is when your dog is frustrated because of not getting what they want. This type of growl may be characterized by wanting to get near their object of desire, anxiously running about, and sometimes even snarling as they growl. When taken at face value, it is quite similar to aggressive growling. For example, if your dog is friendly and growls while pulling you towards another dog while you walk them on their leash, they are likely frustrated because of not being able to go near and play with the dog or at least not soon enough. It may also be that they are already hungry and are trying to communicate that they want to be fed. This, in turn, could lead to a fight. Pleasure and Affection Just like when a cat purrs to show affection, some dogs may also express affection through sounds on occasion. They may also growl whenever you rub their belly, showing pleasure and contentment. A problem only arises when their growling is misinterpreted as aggression by other people. Meanwhile, if your dog seems needy and often growls affectionately, it may be a sign that they are craving more attention or stimulation. Among the solutions to this is providing more exercise for your dog , playing with them more often, or giving them toys that would keep them stimulated. Aggression A dog growl that is caused by aggression involves expressing power. Sometimes canines are trying to dominate another dog or animal. Another possible instance is when their innate hunting instincts kick in after being triggered by something they saw. As aggressive growling may lead to fighting and biting, it is necessary to be careful and determine what is causing your dog to be aggressive. You can identify this growl as having loud, deep, and lengthy rumbles. At the same time, their body may appear stiff, raised, forward-leaning, snarling, and ready to attack. A growling and snarling dog may be dangerous if not appropriately handled. However, it is important to understand that punishment does not help aggression. Instead, you can seek help and guidance from professional dog trainers or animal behaviorists to determine how to stop their behavior the right way. Pain When your pooch is in pain, they may growl to express how they are feeling. This growl may come off similar to a yelp and may sound fearful. Being aware of the signs of pain in dogs would go a long way. Therefore, if your dog emits painful growls, you need to determine the cause and give them the necessary treatment. If you can't determine the cause of the pain on your own and your dog continues to growl, you have the option of subscribing to the Pet Emergency Fund. Steps to Address The Dog Growling Behavior For dogs, growling is one way of communicating with us humans and other animals alike. And while some may think that this behavior should be eliminated, it is actually valuable in the relationship between humans and dogs. Not to mention, you may also miss out on them expressing their affection vocally. On the other hand, punishing dogs for growling may lead to heightened aggression and fear. So what are the steps to address the behavior of dog growling? Determine the cause What is the situation when your dog is growling? If they suddenly exhibit this behavior, can you pinpoint what has changed in their surroundings? Being mindful of these things as you observe your dog is necessary to be able to support them. Help your dog relax If you show anxiety when they are growling due to fear, threat, aggression, or pain, they may become even tenser. What you can do is keep calm and wait until your dog becomes relaxed, and as you proceed, reward them for good behavior. For example, when an unfamiliar person in your house is causing the stress, lead your dog to a different room. During thunderstorms, initiate playtime with your dog to help them calm down. Explore ways to redirect it When a dog growl is caused by something that is making your dog uncomfortable or tense, you can redirect this behavior with the help of treats, toys, and games. Conclusion There are different types of growling, and they may mean various things. Generally, pleasure and play growls are nothing to be worried about and are actually moments that you can cherish with your dog. Dog trainers and animal behaviorists may help you in addressing these behavior if needed. Was this article helpful? I bet some of you wonder why your Goldendoodle growls. I know I do! For those of you who are curious about this topic, I did some research today and came across some interesting details. Why do Goldendoodles growl? Goldendoodles growl because it is their way of expressing how they are feeling. Growling for Goldendoodles allows them to vocalize and communicate to those around them various emotions that they may be feeling. Growling is most often thought of as a way to express aggression for dogs, including Goldendoodles, but this is not the only emotion expressed when they growl. Growling for Goldendoodles can also be the way they express fear, pain, or playfulness. If Goldendoodles growl, it is but one way for them to express themselves vocally. Goldendoodles cannot communicate with words, so they will use various sounds, including growling and body language, to express emotion, thought, wants, and needs. A strong connection or bond between pet parents or caregivers and Goldendoodles allows them to respond appropriately and discover the issue. Perhaps they heard a strange sound outside, or maybe they hurt on the inside. Whatever the reason Goldendoodles growl, it is not always linked to aggression. Goldendoodles growl as a way of expressing themselve s like other dogs. Growling is one way for them to express their thoughts, feelings, wants, and needs because they cannot communicate with words that we can understand. Goldendoodles use growling and other sounds that include barking, whimpering, and howling to communicate along with their body language. Growling for any dog, including Goldendoodles, can also be related to how they feel as a dog. This growling could mean that they are hurting or feeling sick somewhere in their body. Since they can not communicate with words, it is our job to discover what their growling and other sounds mean. These sounds and meanings can vary from one Goldendoodle to another. Another reason why Goldendoodles growl is to express fear. If Goldendoodles are frightened or scared of something, they may use growling as a way to ward of whatever is scaring them. Instead, it is a means for them to attempt to protect themselves or someone else. Sometimes still, why Goldendoodles growl can be because they are excited or feeling playful. This is most likely to happen during physical playtime when they are excited and happy. It is not a reason for concern if they growl when playing unless accompanied by other body languages such as biting or nipping. Goldendoodles and other dogs have to be creative in expressing themselves to us—their inability to use words and have conversations limit their communication to sounds and body language. Perceptive pet parents who know their Goldendoodles well and have a strong bond will find it easier to interpret these sounds and their body language. This allows them to respond appropriately to the need, want, or feeling the Goldendoodle might have. There are numerous reasons why Goldendoodles growl that can be directly related to their environment and what is happening in that environment. Growling can also be related to how they feel or something else entirely. What should be done when Goldendoodles growl? When Goldendoodles or other dogs growl, the pet parent or caregiver should stop what they are doing if possible and attempt to figure out what is happening. It can also include searching the immediate environment and watching what the Goldendoodle looks at. Each dog is unique in how they will express themselves. A Goldendoodle who growls might be upset that the house cat is near their food bowl. A wise pet parent might notice this by looking around. A Goldendoodle who growls when facing the front door might smell that someone is near the entrance or outside of it. Even still, a Goldendoodle who growls while licking a specific body part over and over again might have an undiagnosed injury that is bothering them. By stopping for a few moments to address the situation, the pet parent or caregiver can sometimes stop the dogs growling and even restore harmony in the home environment and their dog. If the pet parent cannot determine why the Goldendoodle is growling by looking around and watching the dog; if they are able, taking a more in-depth look at the situation can sometimes provide answers. The most important thing for any loving pet parent to do is to be compassionate to the Goldendoodle that is growling and maintain a positive attitude. Dogs are very perceptive and can pick up on our own emotions. If a dog is scared of something and tries to tell us, we may react to their fear with fear of our own, increasing their fear and making it more challenging to troubleshoot the problem. Some Goldendoodles or other dogs will even growl when they are excited or being playful with others at certain moments. In these moments for pet parents playing or spending time with their Goldendoodle, who suddenly growls, there is no need for concern unless it is accompanied by other body language such as biting. Being responsive in the moment is a short term solution to growling. In the long term, knowing and understanding the individual Goldendoodle will allow pet parents or caregivers to provide a loving, harmonious home life conducive to happiness for everyone involved, including the Goldendoodle. This requires time, patience, understanding, trust, and a strong bond or connection between dog and human. Is growling in Goldendoodles or other dogs acceptable? Yes, growling in Goldendoodles or other dogs is acceptable as a means for them to communicate if it is not continual or directed at another. It also must not include negative body language. Biting, lunging, and other body language are connected to aggression and should be addressed immediately. If the growling appears to come with other negative qualities such as lunging or attacking others, including other dogs, animals, and people, it should be remedied. This type of growling and aggression can quickly escalate and become a problem if left unchecked. The best solution for this situation is to remove the growling Goldendoodle. Does training and socialization help with growling? These can include not growling when the mailman comes to the door, or when the cat walks past their food bowl. When it comes to growling, socialization is vital. Through social interactions, Goldendoodles learn to live with and get along with others, including other dogs, animals, and people. Socialization also teaches Goldendoodles how others behave. This can teach them that it is okay for another dog to have a treat when they get one or that they are still loved when their pet parent picks up the house cat for a snuggle. Early exposure to various life situations, animals, and people create a well-rounded dog that can handle what life brings. It helps Goldendoodles be less stressed, fearful, and anxious at certain times in their lives. Goldendoodles are naturally social, friendly, and gentle, so training and socialization should go smoothly. Are Goldendoodles aggressive? No, Goldendoodles are not aggressive dogs. Goldendoodles have a very loving and gentle nature due to their breeding, which reduces the likelihood that they will feel and show aggression at any time, even when provoked. It must be said that whether Goldendoodle or other dog if they have been neglected or abused, or have not been appropriately trained and socialized, they can become aggressive whether accidentally or due to upbringing. This situation is not their fault but a byproduct of their upbringing and home environment. In these situations, why Goldendoodles growl is related to what they were exposed to or how they were treated. Proper training and socializing at any stage of life can reduce aggression and create a happier, healthier, and more gentle dog, regardless of whether they are a Goldendoodle or other breed. In Conclusion Whether dogs growl, Goldendoodles or otherwise, varies from dog to dog and is based on their immediate environment and feelings. While many people automatically believe growling is always a negative quality linked to aggression, this is not always the case. Fear, pain, and playfulness can also be reasons for growling. Whatever the reason Goldendoodles growl, if it is accompanied by biting or other negative body language, it should be stopped immediately. Their guardians called to set up a dog behavior training session to stop Max from growing at children when they approach him while he has a bone or high value item. I saw the growling first hand, seconds after I arrived for the session. In the incident at the start of the above video, Abraham was attempting to keep me to himself or take the first position on his own. His growl at older and smaller Sol was intended to back him off. One strategy the family may consider is to train Abe to move away and stay behind an invisible boundary 10 or so feet from the door. The extra distance can help Abe stop acting this way around the door. Plus the human enforcement of this new rule will help them appear more leader like to the dog. Id prefer the adults train Abe to move back from the door using the Escalating Consequences we introduced later in this session. Once Abe is moving back with ease, then the parents can supervise the kids doing the same. With practice, Abe will learn to keep his distance and do so on his own. This is something many dog trainers ignore but a good dog behaviorist will always want to fix. After going over some non verbal ways to disagree with unwanted dog behavior, I showed his guardian how to claim her personal space and train the dog to keep a one foot bubble of personal space. Training a dog to respect personal space is an important part of teaching them proper manners. How a dog treats and interacts with you is how it thinks it should interact with everyone. Teaching Abe to respect this boundary is going to be important. I suggested a number of rules and boundaries and went over some structural changes that will help Abe see his humans as leaders instead of peers. I also went over a Leadership Exercise I developed a few years ago. It will be important for all the members of the family to practice the leadership exercise every day until Abe can sit for up to 15 minutes ignoring the tasty treat laying in the middle of the floor. Often when a dog growls at people when it has an item, the assumption is its a case of resource guarding. I came up with a variation of a method I have used with many resource guarding dogs that took advantage of the family having multiple children. You can check it out in the anti resource guarding video below. Abe is an adolescent dog trying to figure out where his position is in the home; with amongst the humans and dog. If his guardians practice positive dog training through the exercises we introduced daily, consistently enforce rules, let him with a purpose, and reward desired behaviors, Abe should start to identify as being a follower behind all the humans in the home. The humans will also need to keep a close eye on Abe when he is around Sol. Due to his sight and hearing deficiencies, its possible there may be more challenging interactions between them. Setting Abe up for success by upping his exercise and maintaining good supervision while the dogs are together with toys and bones will both be advisable. Share this:. In fact, there are many different reasons why puppies growl. As an owner, you have to figure out what is causing your puppy to growl and address that issue. In this article, I will explain why puppies growl and help you understand what your puppy is trying to say. Continue reading to learn different types of growls and what they mean. Why Do Puppies Growl? While it may be unsettling to hear, growling is a normal form of canine communication. Just like people, puppies and dogs use their vocal abilities to express their needs and feelings. Growling, howling, whining, whimpering, and barking are different types of vocalization puppies use to communicate their wants and needs with their owners. Besides vocalization, your puppy will also use body language to communicate with you. Understanding canine body language can be rather tricky, especially if you are a new dog owner. And if you are unable to pick up on these subtle cues, your puppy might feel the need to growl every once in a while just to get their point across. For the first couple of days after being born, puppies know only how to whimper and whine and they use these vocalizations to communicate with their mother. But once puppies become more mobile and start interacting with their environment, they learn how to growl and bark. By the time you bring your new puppy home , they will be old enough to know how to growl and will use this type of vocalization to communicate with you. While most people associate growling with aggression, dogs and puppies growl for many different reasons. The most common reasons puppies growl are pain, fear, possession, territoriality, playfulness, and possession aggression. Growling is just one of many ways that puppies and adult dogs communicate. Therefore, you will need to understand what your puppy is trying to say in order to meet their needs and respond accordingly. But with time, you will learn how to distinguish a playful growl from a fearful growl and will know exactly what your puppy is trying to communicate. The only way you will ever be able to address and correct this unwanted behavior is to understand why it is happening in the first place. So, instead of trying to teach your puppy to stop growling, you should find the reason why the puppy is growling and address it. Your puppy will most likely stop growling altogether as soon as the underlying issue has been identified and dealt with. Here are the most common reasons behind puppy growling: 1. Pain Both puppies and adult dogs may growl when they are in pain. Your puppy might be sick or have an injury that is causing them pain, especially if they start growling when you reach for a specific part of their body. Trying to diagnose your puppy at home can make things way worse and cause even more fear. In this situation, your only job is to figure out why your puppy is growling and take the necessary steps to resolve the problem. The best and only thing you can do for your puppy in this situation is to take them to the vet as soon as possible. Your vet will examine your puppy, diagnose the problem, and talk with you about possible treatment options. Bear in mind, your puppy will probably start to growl even more during the exam and might even try to nip at you or the vet. It is completely normal for puppies to growl and whine while they are in pain. However, the growling will stop completely as soon as your puppy starts to feel better. Fear It is very common for young puppies to growl when they are afraid. If your puppy typically growls at specific people, strangers, or in unfamiliar places, they are most likely scared. Furthermore, certain sounds such as fireworks, thunder, or extremely loud music can cause a puppy to be afraid and start growling. Fearful puppies use growls as a defensive mechanism to intimidate the threat into leaving them alone. So, if your puppy is, for example, afraid of strangers, they will start growling as soon as they see an unfamiliar face approaching. The stranger who initially wanted to pet your puppy will back off as soon as he hears the growling and continue walking without giving your pup a second glance. So, if your puppy starts to growl whenever a stranger wants to pet them, start telling people to not approach, or even avoid taking your dog to crowded areas. If your puppy is afraid of strangers, you should try socializing and exposing them to a variety of different people and situations. Enrolling your pup into puppy kindergarten class can also improve their socialization skills and make them feel at ease around strangers. And if your efforts seem in vain, you should consider enlisting the help of a canine behavioral expert or a certified dog trainer. Possession Also known as resource guarding, possession aggression can be another reason why your puppy growls. Puppies who exhibit this type of behavior will have a strong urge to protect their resources such as food, toys, territory, or other objects. If your puppy has possession aggression, they may growl, snap, and even bite if they think that someone will take their things away. Most puppies with this problem have a strong need to guard their food, but make no mistake, your pup can get overly protective over anything they find valuable. For example, some puppies will growl over a seemingly unimportant item, such as a ball of paper, with the same intensity as they would over a full bowl of food. Growling is just one of many signs of resource guarding, and your pup might also snap and bite when someone approaches or tries to take away their possession. Furthermore, some puppies will also fight with their siblings over various items or favorite people. Instead of punishing your pup for growling, you should teach them to trust you around their belongings. The best way to do this is to show your pup that they will be rewarded every time they drop the item they are guarding. Essentially, if your puppy is used to getting things their way, they will easily become frustrated and use growling to show disappointment. Obedience training is your best chance of dealing with a frustrated puppy. Your puppy might growl at you while playing fetch, or they might growl at other puppies while they are wrestling or playing chase. Playful growls are completely normal and nothing you should worry about. If you are a novice dog owner, take your puppy to socialization classes and observe how they interact with other puppies there. Understanding how puppies play and interact with one another will help you distinguish playful growls from fighting growls. While play growling is completely normal, you can stop playing with your pup if you notice that the growls are becoming more intense. If this happens, just take a short break and give your pup a few minutes to calm down before resuming playing. And if the same thing happens while your puppy is playing with another dog, separate them until they both calm down. As soon as your puppy seems calm enough, you can let them play with other dogs again. We actually have an article about playful growling with other dogs and puppies. We like to call this game of puppies growling and showing teeth, bitey face. Territoriality Some dogs and puppies feel the need to defend their territory and might start growling at anyone new who is entering the property. If your pup is growling every time a mailman or delivery person rings the doorbell, they are showing classic signs of territorial aggression. Puppies with territorial aggression may start growling over other territories as well. Bear in mind, a territorial puppy might start growling at anyone who is overstepping on their perceived territory. If this is the case, they might even start growling at family members or at you. Luckily, you can get a trainer or a behavioral expert to work with your dog and help curb their territorial tendencies. Like adult dogs, puppies use many types of vocalization, including growling, to communicate with their owners. Playfulness is the most common reason small puppies growl. However, pain, fear, territoriality, possession aggression, and resource guarding can also be the reasons that can cause your puppy to start growling all of a sudden. Growling is one of many ways puppies communicate, and you as an owner need to understand what your puppy is trying to say in order to react properly. When it comes to puppies, growling is usually not a sign of aggression, but your pup may snap or try to bite you. The best thing you can do to stop this behavior is to find out why your pup growled in the first place and resolve that issue. For example, if your puppy growls only while playing, you can curb this behavior by stopping the play session and giving your pup a few minutes to calm down. Instead, it can make matters even worse and your puppy can end up being afraid of you. The most common signs of aggression in puppies are growling, snarling, mouthing, snapping, dominance, stiff posture, fixed gaze, and biting. However, puppies do like to play rough, and normal puppy play usually includes growling, chasing, biting, and barking. Since normal puppy play and aggression have some similar elements, it can be hard to distinguish one from the other, especially if you are a novice owner. You should know that problem behaviors are more intense and last longer than normal play behaviors. If your puppy that has never before shown signs of aggression starts to growl, snap, or try to bite you, chances are that they are in pain. Pain is one of the most common causes of aggression in puppies and can be a sign of injury or disease. If you suspect that your puppy is in pain, take them to the vet as soon as possible to get appropriate treatment. Conclusion While it might sound scary at first, growling is just one of many vocalizations puppies use to communicate with their owners. When it comes to puppies, growling is rarely a sign of aggression, but it can be a sign that your puppy is in pain. Is your puppy growling? If so, do you know why? Puppy kindergarten and group training sessions are another way to help your pal feel confident with being around plenty of other dogs. This makes them a much-in-demand family pet. However, you should never take it for granted that there will never be any problems at all. For a start, Goldies can be quite boisterous dogs, meaning they might knock smaller children down without the intention to do so. They should never bother them when they are sleeping or want some alone time. Not to say that you need to spend every minute of the day with your dog although these pups do better in a household where there is always someone around , but you do need to ensure they get plenty of daily exercise for one. Younger dogs may need as much as two hours of walks and games a day to keep their exuberance in check. When you do have the time to give them a bit of attention, Goldendoodles greatly benefit from training. Positive reinforcement training is where you train your pup using rewards to highlight desired behaviors. Most canine experts would recommend this as the best current method. Where they are at with this will be a lot less apparent, yet it is essential that you are aware of these different stages, so you know both what to expect and how to handle it. As they start exploring the world around them, they will learn early lessons about being around and communicating with other dogs. This includes things like bite inhibition, vocalizations, and what various postures mean. This should be done slowly, and you need to ensure that all experiences at this stage are positive. The puppy is capable of experiencing true fear at this age, and any traumatic events at this time will stay with them for a very long time, if not forever. See Also: Click the image Seniority Classification Stage weeks At this stage, your puppy is likely very comfortable around you and your family and learning so much from your daily interactions. This is the stage where they will likely start to test boundaries to see what they can get away with. It can also be when aggressive behaviors are first observed. They value you as their stand-in parent and protector. However, once they reach this stage, they will start to become more independent. This is the time when they might decide to run off on you. How you deal with this behavior will set a precedent for how much freedom you can give your pet in later life. Related Content.

Poor Zach, who loves to build things, realized that if he wanted his garage back and to keep puppies out of his bathtub on cold nights he had better get started on a really nice dog house. Ha ha. Everyone was happy. Breeding can be an interesting field to navigate. There are many different breeding philosophies and many types of breeders but deciding what our program would look like was as simple as laying out our core values. Eight years later our program has grown. We now have four of our own beautiful dogs and several more in wonderful guardian homes. Breeding still brings us joy. We anxiously await every litter and love our time with your pup. We are excited to meet you and be a part of your journey. We would love to hear from you! Lily and Fisher's He is the perfect dog for our family. He is mellow indoors with us and adventurous outside. He came to us so sweet and content and well cared-for. His crate training and potty training have gone well too! It was a bit miraculous that we found each other, in a different state and pretty quickly, but Alisa was so responsive and informative. We are so grateful for the addition to our family! Winnie's Family I've had a great experience from the very beginning. Alisa is very communicative and answered all of my questions. Wrenly's Family I met the Atkinsons this past December after I had been talking to Alisa about how I was interested in getting a puppy. Since then they have all become family. With every step and question Alisa was there with an answer and let me see my pup multiple times before I even brought her home. They have given me the best experience and truly care and love their dogs like family! A lot of that is because of the breed of course, but also from the socialization and love and attention the Atkinsons give their dogs from the very beginning. Highly, highly, highly, recommend Atkinsons goldens to anyone interested in a puppy. We live a couple hours away and they were so good about sending us pictures, updating us with how our little guy was doing every few days and even a FaceTime date on Christmas Day to surprise our girls. Truly an incredible breeder. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for Idaho Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. bulldog puppy food amount - Prevalence: Common Pugs are members of the toy group despite their solid appearance. They range in height from 10 to 11 inches and in weight from 14 to 18 pounds six to eight kilograms. They are square dogs with substantial limbs. Pugs are the sturdiest dogs of the toy group, befitting their mastiff heritage. Pugs are known for their large, round heads, with the shortened muzzles and extensive forehead wrinkles. The vertical wrinkle on the forehead is said to resemble the Chinese character for "prince" and thus known as the "prince mark. The tail curls tightly over the hip. They have a short, but very dense double coat. Colors can range from apricot to fawn, silver and black. All but the black dogs have a dark mask and ears with a trace of darkening down the back. The ears feel like black velvet. Personality: Pugs are not the lively socialites that some of the toy breeds are. They are a bit more serious, with a dry sense of humor. The breed motto is "multum in parvo," meaning a lot in a little, with plenty of dog in a small package. Pugs can be stubborn but normally want to please. These are fairly laid-back dogs, not usually given to extensive barking, digging or chewing. Pugs tend to get along well with other dogs and are sturdy enough to get along with children. They enjoy company and can be quite affectionate. True to their grouping, they are good companion dogs. Living With: Pugs are extremely easy to keep and have a serious tendency to become obese unless their diet and exercise are watched carefully. With the short muzzle, they do not do well in hot, humid weather and must be observed carefully for heatstroke. Pugs do tend to snore, again a result of the short muzzle. The prominent eyes are easily injured and care must be taken to keep them moist. Pugs are fairly robust and often live to 14 or 15 years of age. Pugs do best with some daily exercise to help with their weight problems. Despite their heroic alarm years ago, they are not usually great watchdogs, preferring instead to greet newcomers with a wagging tail. Pugs should be socialized to keep that outgoing temperament, and they do well with other pets. Grooming is important, both for the shedding from the dense coat and to keep facial wrinkles clean. A quick daily grooming, even a swipe with a hound mitt, usually suffices for the coat and a gentle wiping with a wet cloth for the face. History: While the pug is often associated with Holland, the breed originated in China, probably bred down from one of the local mastiff-type dogs. The little dogs with the round heads and expressive facial wrinkles were then transported to Holland via trading ships of the Dutch East India Company. In , a pug sounded the alarm that saved Prince William from the approaching Spanish soldiers, and the breed forever after was tied to the royal House of Orange. Napoleon's wife had a pet pug, and the duke and duchess of Windsor had a pug as a royal companion. Victorian England took on pugs as the latest rage in canine fashion and many pugs can be spotted in paintings of that era. The word "pug" may come from the Latin "pugnus" for fist, possibly describing the round face and head. The name does not fit the breed's temperament, because these are not really guard dogs, but designed first and foremost as companion dogs. Related Pet Care Articles. They thrive on attention and can get pretty worked up and excited if fun things are happening. These are amiable little dogs who want to participate in your activities, too. Pugs with kids and babies are often a great combination since Pugs are fun and enjoy playtime. Finally, when it comes to a career, Pugs may have the best job in the world: being a companion to their loving family. They are average barkers not too quiet, not too much and make fairly good watchdogs. The biggest challenge to Pug care is probably their health needs, which are high. Grooming Guess what—Pugs shed! Black Pugs might shed a bit less than fawn-colored pups, but both shed year-round and not just in the fall and spring as with other breeds. Be sure to clean those wrinkles and skin folds every day with mild wipes to remove dander and accumulations; this will help prevent irritation and infections. If you see redness or swelling or smell an odor your pup may have an ear infection. Your vet can prescribe medication to clear it up. A bath about every month is also a good idea. Be sure to dry those delicious folds completely! Pugs need their nails trimmed every two to three weeks. Get the how-to here. If nails are left too long on older dogs, it can make it painful to walk. And be sure to talk with your vet for advice regarding dental health and the use of dental chews. Have your vet professionally clean their teeth every year. Regular dental care will help prevent serious issues later in their life. Pugs are people pleasers, so they want to do a good job for you. You can do this in part by taking your dog to group training classes or becoming involved in a dog sport like agility, obedience or rally. Obesity leads to other health problems down the road. Consider feeding your pup a well-balanced, high-quality commercial diet formulated specifically for toy breeds. Those treat calories count! Finally, consider getting a doggy- Puggy? They are in the best position to help you pick the right food for your dog based on their individual needs. Exercise All dogs need appropriate exercise, and your Pug is no exception. Since Pugs are a brachycephalic breed flat-faced with a short nose , some may have a compromised airway caused by the extreme facial characteristics in their nostrils, palate, larynx and trachea. Instead, aim for shorter exercise sessions, broken up throughout the day. Pugs have pretty low energy levels, and their exercise needs are also fairly low; they typically need less than an hour of exercise every day. While some Pugs do enjoy doggy sports like agility, a short walk or fun indoor playtime will be plenty. Ideal Environment Pugs are wonderfully adaptable to many types of home settings and will be happy wherever you live. No problem for Pugs. Small homes? Big homes with room to roam? You bet! Country homes with huge backyards? Your Pug will love that too, although they may not need a yard of that size to be happy. Pugs are usually open to meeting strangers, even though they may bark to let you know your guests are here. Pugs really do prefer the indoors. Back to Top Pug Health Toy dog breeds tend to have longer lifespans than large dog breeds, and the Pug is no exception. Pug life expectancy is about 13 to 15 years. However, there are a few health issues you should be aware of, so you can help your pet stay healthy throughout their life. Eye Issues: Since Pugs have such prominent eyes, they are more prone to eye issues. Treatment usually consists of medicated eye drops. Weight reduction, physical therapy and surgery are options for treatment. Patellar Luxation: This is the condition where the knee slides out of the joint. In milder cases, pain medication and weight management are treatment options. Surgery is often needed in more severe cases. Pug Dog Encephalitis: This is an inflammatory brain disease and is fatal. Within a matter of weeks, a dog will experience seizures, circling, blindness, then coma and death. At this time, there is no known treatment for the disease, nor are experts sure how they get it. Skin Issues: Keeping your Pug clean helps minimize skin issues. In particular, the skin folds require special attention to avoid irritation and infections. Ear Infections: Those floppy ears are cute, but they may harbor infections. Check their ears every day and gently wipe away any debris. Signs of infection include redness, swelling or a bad odor. Your vet can prescribe medicated ear solutions to get rid of an infection. Allergies: Pugs can be affected by skin allergies. These can be caused by something in the food they eat or their environment pollen, mold, etc. Thankfully, your vet can treat allergies with either dietary changes or medications, depending on the cause. Back to Top Pug History The history of the Pug dates back thousands of years and spans multiple continents. But their not so humble origins began as the beloved companions of Chinese emperors , and they were highly prized and valued for centuries. Some Pugs even had their own guards! By around the s, Pugs began to travel abroad, and they arrived in Europe, where they became quite popular with royalty in Holland. Over in England, Queen Victoria was said to be especially fond of the breed; she shared her home with as many as 38 Pugs. They may be small dogs, but they pack a lot of personality into their small size! The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in , but the popularity of the Pug breed in America declined somewhat around the turn of the 20th century. Today, the Pug enjoys steady popularity, currently ranking 28th of the most popular dog breeds in the US. You can also reach out to Pug rescue organizations to adopt a Pug or keep an eye out for the breed at your local animal shelter. Evidence of Pug-like dogs has been found in ancient Tibet and Japan. In the latter s and early s, China began trading with European countries. Reportedly, the first Pugs brought to Europe came with the Dutch traders, who named the breed Mopshond, a name still used today. Pugs quickly became favorites of royal households throughout Europe, and even played a role in the history of many of these families. In Holland, the Pug became the official dog of the House of Orange after a Pug reportedly saved the life of William, Prince of Orange, by giving him a warning that the Spaniards were approaching in .It is known that black pugs existed in the s because the famous artist, William Hogarth, was a Pug enthusiast. Click is credited with making Pugs a better breed overall and shaping the modern Pug as we know it today. Pugs became very popular during the Victorian era and were featured in many paintings, postcards, and figurines of the period. Often, they were depicted wearing wide, decorative collars or large bows around their short, thick necks. Queen Victoria had many Pugs, and also bred them. The queen preferred apricot-fawn Pugs, whereas another Pug fancier, Lady Brassey, made black Pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .At first, Pugs were very popular, but by the turn of the century, interest in the breed waned. A few dedicated breeders kept breeding and, after some years, the breed regained popularity. Pug Size Pugs weigh between 14 and 18 pounds male and female. He is a playful, comical dog that enjoys living it up, and delights his owner with silly antics. Temperament is affected by a number of factors, including heredity, training , and socialization. Puppies with nice temperaments are curious and playful, willing to approach people and be held by them. Meeting siblings or other relatives of the parents is also helpful for evaluating what a puppy will be like when he grows up. Socialization helps ensure that your Pug puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Enrolling him in a puppy kindergarten class is a great start. Inviting visitors over regularly, and taking him to busy parks, stores that allow dogs, and on leisurely strolls to meet neighbors will also help him polish his social skills. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. Cheyletiella Dermatitis Walking Dandruff : This is a skin condition that is caused by a small mite. If you see heavy dandruff, especially down the middle of the back, contact your vet. The mites that cause this condition are contagious, which means all pets in the household need to treated. A diagnosis of PDE can only be made by testing the brain tissue of the dog after it dies. PDE usually affects young dogs, causing them to seizure, circle, become blind, then fall into a coma and die. This can happen in a few days or weeks. They are prone to a condition called idiopathic epilepsy : seizures for no known reason. If your Pug has seizures, take him to your vet to determine what treatment is appropriate. Nerve Degeneration : Older Pugs that drag their rear, stagger, have trouble jumping up or down, or become incontinent may be suffering from nerve degeneration. Since their front legs often remain strong, some owners buy carts to help their Pugs get around, and the veterinarian might be able to prescribe medication to help alleviate symptoms. If your Pug squints or the eyes look red and tear excessively, contact your vet immediately. Corneal ulcers usually respond well to medication, but if left untreated, can cause blindness or even rupture the eye. Dry Eye : Keratoconjunctivitis sicca and pigmentary keratitis are two conditions seen in Pugs. They can occur at the same time, or individually. Your vet can perform tests to determine if this is the cause, which can be controlled with medication and special care. Pigmentary keratits is a condition that causes black spots on the cornea, especially in the corner near the nose. If the pigment covers the eye, it can cause blindness. Your vet can prescribe medication that will help keep the eyes moist and dissolve the pigment. Both of these eye conditions require life-long therapy and care. Eye Problems : Because their large eyes bulge, Pugs are prone to a variety of eye problems, including proptosis the eyeball is dislodged from the eye socket and the eyelid clamps behind it ; distichiasis an abnormal growth of eyelashes on the margin of the eye, resulting in the eyelashes rubbing against the eye ; progressive retinal atrophy a degenerative disease of the retinal visual cells that leads to blindness ; and entropion the eyelid, usually the lower lid, rolls inward, causing the hair on the lid to rub on the eye and irritate it. Allergies : Some Pugs suffer from a variety of allergies , ranging from contact to food allergies. If your Pug is licking at his paws or rubbing his face a great deal, suspect allergy and have him checked by your vet. Demodectic Mange : Also called demodicosis, all dogs carry a little passenger called a demodex mite. The mother dog passes this mite to her pups in their first few days of life. If your Pug has a weakened or compromised immune system, however, it can develop demodectic mange. Demodectic mange can be localized or generalized. In the localized form, patches of red, scaly, skin with hair loss appears on the head, neck and forelegs. Even so, you should take your dog to the vet because it can turn into the generalized form of demodectic mange. Generalized demodectic mange covers the entire body and affects older puppies and young adult dogs. The dog develops patchy skin, bald spots, and skin infections all over the body. The American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology recommends neutering or spaying all dogs that develop generalized demodectic mange because there is a genetic link. Staph Infection : Staph bacteria is commonly found on skin, but some dogs will develop pimples and infected hair follicles if their immune systems are stressed. The lesions can look like hives where there is hair; on areas without hair, the lesions can look like ringworm. You should contact your vet for appropriate treatment. Yeast Infection : If your Pug smells bad, is itchy and has blackened, thickened skin, he may have a yeast infection. It commonly affects the armpits, feet, groin, neck, and inside the ears. Your vet can prescribe medications to clear this up. Hemi-vertebrae : Short-nosed breeds, such as Pugs, Bulldogs and French Bulldogs, can have misshaped vertebrae. Sometimes, only a few of the vertebrae are affected and the dog is able to live a normal life. Others will stagger and display an uncoordinated, weak gait between 4 and 6 months of age. Some dogs get progressively worse and may even become paralyzed. The cause of the condition is unknown. Surgery can help. Hip Dysplasia : This malady affects small breeds as well as large breeds, including Pugs. Many factors, including genetics, environment and diet, are thought to contribute to this deformity of the hip joint. Affected Pugs are usually able to lead normal, healthy lives with proper veterinary attention. Legg-Perthes Disease : This is another disease involving the hip joint. Many toy breeds are prone to this condition. When your Pug has Legg-Perthes, the blood supply to the head of the femur the large rear leg bone is decreased, and the head of the femur that connects to the pelvis begins to disintegrate. Usually, the first signs of Legg-Perthes, limping and atrophy of the leg muscle, occur when puppies are 4 to 6 months old. The scar tissue that results from the surgery creates a false joint and the puppy is usually pain free. Patellar Luxation : The patella is the kneecap. Luxation means dislocation of an anatomical part as a bone at a joint. Patellar luxation is when the knee joint often of a hind leg slides in and out of place, causing pain. This can be crippling, but many dogs lead relatively normal lives with this condition. Vaccination Sensitivity : There are reports of Pugs suffering from sensitivity to routine vaccinations. Usually, symptoms include hives, facial swelling, soreness and lethargy. A dog that is sensitive to vaccines can develop complications or die, though this is rare. Watch your Pug carefully for a few hours after being vaccinated and call the vet if you notice anything unusual. Pug Care Though playful and rambunctious, the Pug is a low-maintenance companion, making it ideal for older owners. Because they are a small, quiet breed and are relatively inactive when indoors, they are a good choice for apartment dwellers as well. Light sleepers may also want to invest in a pair of ear plugs — Pugs are prone to snore. How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. These dogs love to eat, eat, eat. This, combined with their small stature, puts them at risk for obesity. As a Pug owner, you must show great restraint. Do not indulge him with food. Feed appropriate portions , limit treats and encourage exercise. For more on feeding your Pug, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Pugs are typically fawn-colored or black. The fawn color can have different tints, such as apricot or silver, and all Pugs have a short, flat, black muzzle. Pugs shed like crazy, especially in summer. The wise Pug owner accepts this, and adjusts her wardrobe accordingly, wearing light-colored clothing that better hides hair. Following that, regular brushing and bathing helps keep the coat in good condition and shedding to a minimum. A monthly bath is sufficient, though some owners bathe their Pugs more frequently. These folds are hotbeds for infection if allowed to become damp or dirty. The wrinkles must be dried thoroughly after bathing, and wiped out in-between baths. Some owners simply use a dry cotton ball; others use commercial baby wipes to wipe out the folds. Because they protrude, the eyes are vulnerable to injury and irritation from soaps and chemicals. Like many small breeds, the Pug can be susceptible to gum disease. Regular brushing with a small, soft toothbrush and doggie toothpaste helps prevent this. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Though small, the Pug is not delicate like some toy breeds, so he is a good breed choice for families with children. However, children who want an active pet to retrieve balls or play soccer will be disappointed with a Pug. Adults should always supervise interactions between children and pets. Properly trained and socialized , the Pug enjoys the companionship of dogs , and can be trusted with cats, rabbits, and other animals. Pug Rescue Groups Pugs are often purchased without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. There are many Pugs in need of adoption and or fostering. There are a number of rescues that we have not listed. A bit goofy and rambunctious, pugs have also earned a reputation as a canine class clown. Pugs are ideal house dogs thanks to their stable temperament and loving disposition. Although you'll need a quality vacuum, as they shed profusely! Playful but not requiring lots of activity, pugs are content to do whatever their owner wants to do, whether that be watching a movie or going for a walk around the block. Very intelligent, and at times willful, pugs are happy and affectionate pups who remain very loyal to their owners. As a brachycephalic breed, that adorable smooshy face can also be the source of common health problems for pugs, which potential owners will want to understand before they choose to become pug parents. Pugs come in two standard colors with a few tonal variations: fawn with a black mask or all black. The fawn or tan coat color can range from a warm apricot to a cool and rarely seen silver. Their heads feature their signature short, flat, black muzzle covered with deep wrinkles. Their prominent eyes dominate their comical, wrinkly face and showcase a range of emotions, from surprise and happiness to curiosity. They sport moles on their cheeks, called "beauty spots" and a clearly defined "thumb mark" on their forehead. Their short coat is actually a double coat, and they shed like crazy, especially during the summer months. According to the AKC standard , the perfect pug tail has a double curl. Temperament A pug's favorite place to be is right by your side. Bred to be companions, they are completely content snuggling up on your lap and lounging the day away and aren't afraid to hop right into bed with you. But be forewarned: Pugs wheeze, snort, and snore so you may want to invest in some ear plugs. They will be quite unhappy—and will let you know it—if you don't shower them with affection or if you leave them alone for long periods of time. You shouldn't expect a pug to hunt, guard, or retrieve. A pug will have nothing to do with such activities. A funny little dog, pugs often find ways to create their own silly entertainment—but please for their sake pay attention to the show they are putting on—while maintaining a dignified manner when necessary. While they are a toy breed, pugs are a bit tougher than other similar-sized pups and are up for playtime. Avoid disappointment and make sure the kids know pugs aren't likely to play fetch or chase a soccer ball though. Pugs are pretty amenable to getting along with anyone, including other dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals. Pugs also make great companions for those living in apartments and older individuals because they don't require too much indoor space for activity. We're not necessarily saying pugs are lazy, but they are known to sleep up to 14 hours per day! They also don't bark much because breathing is a bit difficult for them. Their breathing challenges combined with their short legs make them poor swimmers, too. Although they'd likely benefit from a dip in the pool on hot summer days, as they don't tolerate heat—or the cold—well. So be diligent in helping manage their intake—limit their treats and don't feed them table scraps no matter how cute and pleading their stare may be—because their small stature makes them likely to gain weight quickly. You should also encourage exercise, although they don't need much in a day. They find creative ways to burn off energy on their own. Bathing about once monthly and regular brushing with a medium-bristle brush, a rubber grooming mitt, or a hound glove help manage significant pug shedding. And those sweet facial wrinkles need extra attention because they are a breeding ground for infection if they are damp and dirty. Dry your pug's wrinkles thoroughly after bathing and wipe them out in between baths—a dry cotton ball will do the trick. Pugs also need their nails trimmed regularly, as they don't naturally wear by spending lots of time outdoors. Regular teeth brushing is a must as pugs are susceptible to gum disease. Training can be a challenge, Nichols says. Remember their ultimate goal is simply to spend time with you. If those surgeries are not done, expect a lifelong loud snoring dog. These are symptoms of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS , which can also cause saliva disorders, sleep issues, and difficulties with regurgitation. Pugs can face a fair amount of other health issues, including back problems, epilepsy, allergies, hemi-vertebrae or misshapen vertebrae , hip dysplasia , patellar luxation, and nerve degeneration later in life. A variety of skin conditions may affect pugs, including yeast infections, staph infections, or demodectic mange. While their big, dark eyes are adorable, they are especially vulnerable. Pugs sometimes face corneal ulcers, proptosis , and dry eye, among other ailments. Skin conditions such as walking dandruff—caused by a small mite—need to be treated by your veterinarian. Pug parents also need to watch that their pugs maintain a healthy weight; obesity can exacerbate their breathing problems. It causes a pug to seize, circle, become blind, then fall into a coma and die. Research is ongoing. History Pugs are an ancient breed—perhaps the oldest dog breed, in fact—that originated in China. Going back some 2, years, flat-faced, or short-nosed toy dogs like the pug were popular with Chinese emperors and lived lavish lives because of it, the AKC says. The name pug is supposedly derived from the Latin word "pugnus"—which means "fist"—to reflect the fact that a pug's face looks like a clenched fist, the AKC writes. And their grooming needs are fairly straightforward. A morning and evening walk plus some active playtime should be sufficient. Pugs also love participating with their humans in dog sports , such as agility and rally. And they enjoy puzzle toys to challenge them physically and mentally. Take care not to overexert your dog, especially in warm weather. The pug's short muzzle makes it hard for the breed to cool itself through panting, which can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Plan to brush weekly to remove loose fur and distribute skin oils. And bathe roughly once a month, depending on how dirty your dog gets. Make sure to dry the folds thoroughly. And aim to brush its teeth every day. Training Pugs typically are eager to please and respond well to positive training methods. Using part of their daily meals for training treats is a good option. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord.
