If for some reason one of these problems should arise and you find yourself wanting to place your dog in a new home, we ask that you first contact us. In some instances, we may be able to help. Our main concern here however is that none of our dogs under any circumstances wind up in the dog pound or other type of animal shelter. There are always other options and we would be more than happy to help. Should any problem such as those mentioned above arise, that are clearly hereditary in nature, the owner is to contact Keepsake Labradors immediately. In addition to their written statement of intent to invoke the terms of the guarantee, the owner should provide documentation and any or all x-rays or other material from their veterinarian to Keepsake Labradors who will seek a confirming diagnosis from a veterinarian of our choice upon receiving them. Additionally, your new puppy is guaranteed until it reaches one year of age against severe crippling hip dysplasia. In an instance where severe crippling hip dysplasia is diagnosed a replacement puppy will be provided so long as the new owners take the steps set forth below in this contract. First of all the owners must immediately notify Keepsake Labradors of the diagnosis. This replacement is contingent on the owners providing a written statement from their veterinarian that the dog is not and has never been overweight for its bone structure and that no evidence exists that the puppy was overstressed or over exercised during this important developmental period of its life. Furthermore, the veterinarian must indicate there have been no signs of abuse, neglect or past injuries that could be the cause of such dysplasia. In cases where the exchange is to take place and the owners of the dog to be replaced have chosen surgery rather than euthanasia, they must also provide written documentation that the dog in question has been spayed or neutered. It is agreed and understood that in all instances outlined above, the only applicable refund is a replacement puppy. In no cases will there be a monetary refund. The Lab was a working dog used during hunting pursuits and the hunting fraternity heavily favored the Black Labrador over all other colors. And so red labs were relatively uncommon. But in a reversal of the trend today, in the early days of the breed the more common shades of yellow that existed were dark yellow to fox red. The lighter shades of yellow and cream that we think of as normal today, were actually quite rare. In fact, the first ever registered yellow was a dark golden color. However, through the mid to late s, lighter shades of yellow and cream became more fashionable and breeders sought to selectively breed for these colors. This is mostly my opinion and not concrete fact, but the two theories I have on why the lighter colors of Yellow Labradors became more common are: Firstly, during the early years of the breed the darker yellows and reds were more common. So when a pale cream or very light yellow was born, it seemed more exotic, rarer and hence more desirable. So breeders started to selectively breed for these colors and hence less and less reds were born. Secondly, since the middle s, a famous brand of British toilet paper, Andrex has used a pale Yellow Labrador in their television adverts. Their adverts went on to be shown in over countries for over 35 years. Most colors centered on a cream to light golden color. The dark yellows and reds fell out of fashion. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the range of available shades in the Yellow Labrador have once again widened. They stood out among the crowd and so they were more desired. This caused breeders to try to match the demand and selectively breed for lighter colors. Due to a lack of popularity of the dark red coat colors, it all but disappeared. But this new-found rarity in turn made the darker red Labs more desirable. So now there are many breeders who are selectively breeding to try to obtain litters of reds to meet the demand of people who want the rarer color. Things have turned full circle. Controversy Around The Red And Darker Yellow Shades Being uncommon in comparison to the black, paler yellow and chocolate shades does make some people question the red Labradors pedigree. They question whether in fact they are a pure bred Labrador or not? However, unlike the so-called Silver Labrador Retriever that is surrounded by accusations of outcrossing Labradors with Weimaraners to introduce the diluted coat color to the breed, no such controversy surrounds the darker colors of Yellow and Red Labradors. They are a genuine, pure bred Labrador, with a history going back to the earliest days of the breed. Another controversy is the fact that Fox Red Labrador breeders charge a far higher price than breeders do for the more traditional colors of the breed. They advertise their dogs as being a rare breed and charge a premium. There is some truth in this, but this controversy also follows many other breeds and colors of dogs. Are Breeders of Reds Irresponsible? There is some evidence to support this in a very few small cases, but there are some highly responsible breeders too and I think the good do outnumber the bad. Many people have asked if different colored Labs have different temperaments. Is the Fox Red Lab temperament different from the other Lab colors? In our experience, no a Fox Red lab has the same loving, friendly temperament as black, yellow, and chocolate Labs. A good healthy puppy will have clear, shiny eyes that are free from discharge. Its coat will be glossy with a minimum of flaking skin. It should be alert and playful. How about its littermates and the dam? Look around at others in the litter, all should appear healthy and well fed. Look around for any fecal matter that may not have been removed yet. Is the stool well-formed or sloppy? A clean environment and robust family of dogs are very good signs! If the sire and dam are present, how do they behave? A surprising amount of behavior is inherited. The parents may be one of the best indications of the future temperament of your new puppy. Hip and elbow dysplasias are potentially crippling abnormalities of joint formation that, unfortunately, do occur in this breed. While there are several factors involved in joint dysplasias, it is well known that these are at least partly inherited. It may take several years for the painful arthritis associated with hip and elbow dysplasia to become apparent, but the joints can be checked by x-ray examination before breeding. Making sure that both parents, and as many of their relatives as possible, are radiographically free of hip and elbow dysplasia will help you to avoid this sad condition. Have the parents had their eyes examined? Unfortunately, again, some Labradors may have inherited eye defects that could lead to vision loss. Subtle changes in the appearance of the retina part of the inside of the eye can indicate that tendency. Retinal Dysplasia is generally a non-progressive eye disease that causes varying degrees of poor eye-sight, but rarely total blindness. Juvenile Cataracts are spots of abnormal coloration deep within the lens. They generally do not affect vision and are non-progressive. If interested, does this puppy have show, field, hunting, or obedience potential? Even with outstanding pedigrees, not every puppy will have the qualities sought after in the show ring, field or obedience ring. Check the pedigrees for the blending of lines that will produce the best possible animal. Ask the breeder for a certificate of vaccination stating what vaccines it has already received and when, and by whom. For adequate protection, puppies need a series of vaccinations. Check with your own veterinarian for advice. If the puppy was dewormed, what was the drug used and when was it given. If the puppy was not dewormed, was a fecal exam done? The breeder can answer whether or not the dam or other litters have had problems with worms. What type and brand of food, how much, and how often? The breeder will usually recommend a food and feeding program. It is important not to over-feed nor under-feed a growing puppy! Heartworm is spread from dog to dog by mosquitoes. The puppy should be placed on heartworm preventative at an early age, and maintained on this medicine each year throughout mosquito season. What are the terms of the guarantee if any? Have your new puppy examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible after you pick it up to assure its good health. Some dogs can be born with the condition because that is just how their esophagus is formed. As the name implies, one may associate IBD with lower GI symptoms, but in fact, sometimes vomiting is the main symptom. The concern about Pepto Bismol is that it contains salicylic acid, which is an ingredient in aspirin. We need to use this with caution, especially in dogs taking anti-inflammatories or steroids, as it could cause GI bleeding. Pepcid AC famotidine and Prilosec omeprazole are safer options to use to help reduce acid production and acid reflux, and these often settle their stomach. Medications to Stop Nausea and Vomiting Cerenia maropitant citrate is the most commonly used antiemetic medication that stops vomiting for dogs in recent years. It acts on a trigger zone in the brain to stop nausea, and also acts on receptors in the stomach. Vets will often start your dog with an injection of Cerenia and then follow up with pills every 24 hours for a couple of days to make sure the vomiting has been resolved. Reglan metoclopramide is less widely used but is still very helpful for motility disorders in dogs as well as megaesophagus. But for simplicities sake, I am going to address both things as the same thing; throwing up. Causes of white foam vomit 1. Indigestion and stomach upset Your pug could be throwing up white foam just because they have an upset tummy. The most common reason is gastroenteritis where they have an empty stomach and then puke up a white foam vomit. This condition is also known as bilious vomiting syndrome. The bile produced can not only be white but also have a yellow color. Puking up something they ate Pugs love to put anything in their mouth they can get their teeth around, particularly during the teething phase. It might be that they ate something their stomach disagrees with such as grass. Kennel cough One of the more common reasons pugs throw up white foam will be kennel cough. Kennel cough can be contracted when your pug has been exposed to other dogs, usually in kennels as the name suggests. It is an upper respiratory infection that your vet can treat, typically being treated in a week to 10 days. Bloat Bloat gastric dilatation-volvulus is one of the most serious reasons for pugs puking up white foam and slime. They can become sick very quickly and will need to be seen by a vet quickly. It occurs when their stomach becomes twisted after expanding. The stomach can expand when filled with food, fluid, or gas which then puts pressure on their internal organs.
