What Is a Fleece Coat Labradoodle? A fleece coat Labradoodle is not a new breed or breed line but rather a reference to a particular Labradoodle coat type. The hair coat is a shedding single layer coat that is straight or wavy and most resembles the Labrador Retriever, Terrier or Spaniel parent coats. The reason owes to genetic influence from Labrador Retrievers, Poodles and, for Australian Labradoodles in particular, Cocker Spaniels, Water Terriers and perhaps other breeds as well. Grooming a Fleece Coat Labradoodle The fleece coat Labradoodle is considered a relatively easy coat type to groom and maintain. However, there can be some variation here depending on whether this coat tends more towards straight-wavy versus curly-wavy. However, because the fleece coat sheds only lightly if at all, this means shed hair is getting trapped in the surrounding coat. This trapped shed hair can create tangles and mats that cause skin abrasion and lead to infection. For this reason, it is a good idea to groom your adult fleece coat Labradoodle daily. But be sure to start brushing your Labradoodle puppy early in life to get them used to the process. The best way is to spritz or smooth on a bit of detangler. Next, use a de-shedding rake or tool to remove the dead, shed hair. Then run a blunt-tip wide tooth comb through the coat to gently work out any tangles or mats. Finding Fleece Coat Labradoodle Puppies Labradoodles first made headlines when breed founder Wally Conron announced they were hypoallergenic. Not surprisingly, this created an instant demand for the newly created dog breed! Unfortunately, since that time, researchers have determined there is no such an animal as a hypoallergenic dog. However, dogs with low-shedding or non-shedding coats are less likely to trigger allergic episodes. So if you or someone in your family is severely pet allergic, your best bet is to work with a late-stage Labradoodle breeder — F3 or later, or multi-gen multi-generational. Also, your fleece coats, while, overall, are softer than your wool coats in texture, still have some texture variation within the fleece coat type. There are better, more nutritious options on the list for your Golden to enjoy, should you choose to make vegetables a part of its diet. These vegetables can make good snacks for your Golden Retriever in smaller quantities. Raw peppers might be difficult for your Golden Retriever to digest, so cooked peppers are better for digestion. If you choose to cook the peppers, be wary of any added sauces or spices such as garlic or onions. Also, peppers apply to bell peppers only — not chili or other varieties. Peppers are a good source of beta-carotene, vitamins A and C, potassium, folic acid, iron, and fiber. Bell peppers also contain vitamin B6 and are low in calories. Broccoli Broccoli could be on both the healthy and unhealthy list. Golden Retrievers can safely eat broccoli florets. Carrots Carrots are an excellent snack for your dog and are most definitely Golden Retriever approved. Carrots are high in beta-carotene, vitamin A, and fiber. While carrots can be eaten raw, cooked, or steamed is best. With raw carrots, much of the nutrients are lost due to cellulose. Cellulose makes it challenging to digest the vegetable and absorb the nutrients. Cooking breaks down the cellulose, making digestion and nutrient absorption easier for your dog. However, raw carrots are great for your Golden Retrievers teeth, and they like the crunch. So, consider mixing it up with raw and cooked to get both benefits. A full carrot can even be frozen to help a teething puppy with sore gums. Cauliflower is an excellent source of fiber, vitamins K and C, calcium, potassium, and folate. However, like broccoli, you need to go easy on the amount given due to its Isothiocyanate content. Isothiocyanate can cause gas, bloating, or significant health problems if given in large quantities. Celery Celery is a safe snack for your Golden Retriever. Low in calories and fat and high in fiber, this crunchy snack is packed with nutrients. Celery is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K and contains manganese, folate, and potassium. Celery is excellent diet food for dogs struggling with weight issues or obesity. But, like all vegetables and fruits, keep portion sizes small. Corn Yes, this vegetable some classify it as a grain is perfectly safe for dogs. The corn kernels are safe for dogs, not the cob. Corn gets a bad rap at times for being void of nutritional value. In truth, corn has protein, fiber, vitamin E and beta carotene, omega-six fatty acids, and linoleic acid which dogs cannot make on their own. Cooked corn is best for your Golden Retriever. Corn kernels are fine, but avoid feeding the cob. Green Beans Greens beans are a safe vegetable for your dog. Green beans can be eaten by your Golden Retriever raw or cooked. This vegetable is low in fat and calories, high in fiber, and is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K, calcium, folate, magnesium, and potassium. It also contains omega-three fatty acids. As with any extreme dietary changes, talk to your vet first before considering this if your dog has weight issues.
