Bernedoodle Personalities and Temperaments? FUN So what is the Bernedoodle all about? The short answer is FUN! Read about which doodle breeds are the calmest here. The Bernese Mountain Dog takes its name from the canton of Bern in the central farmlands of Switzerland where he was bred to work on farms as a helper in various ways, from guarding livestock to pulling carts of farm supplies across the hilly Alpine terrain. As you can probably tell from his job description, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, strong dog who has the energy to do physical tasks. The Bernese Mountain Dog is known for having a sense of humor; running away with your socks or keys is one of his favorite pastimes. Although you may not find their jokes as terribly funny as they do if you do not enjoy slobbery socks or keys! Without his farm chores to do, the Bernese Mountain Dog must find other ways to use his powerful body and energy. This breed will happily snuggle with you on the sofa, but he must also be exercised daily, particularly when young. Bernedoodles Have Gentle and Caring Temperaments The Berner is known for being a gentle giant— patient with children, affectionate and devoted to his family. He is overall amiable and easygoing. However, this does not mean he is a pushover to train. Unlike the Golden retriever and Labrador, the Bernese Mountain Dog does not have a long history of therapy and service dog work. Despite being steady-tempered, he can be a bit stubborn when it comes to training and prefers to do things on his own timetable. One of the strongest qualities of the Berner is his affection. He may very well think his pound body can fit perfectly in your lap. He will want to accompany his owners as much as possible and his loyalty is simply unmatched. The other half of the Bernedoodle is of course the well-known Poodle. In fact, the sporting clip method of trimming the coat was originally used to facilitate swimming. So Standard Poodles are actually quite athletic, moderately active and extremely intelligent. Retrieving is a skill that requires dutiful obedience on the part of the dog, and the standard poodle is no exception. Poodles often excel in obedience competitions and agility exercises. They are also incredibly people-oriented and sensitive. This means they are often easy to train, but also that they require a lot of affection to be at their happiest and reach their full potential. In other words, Poodles are not the type of dog that will be content alone in the backyard all day! The Poodle lends its non-shedding coat and better health to the Bernese Mountain Dog to create a lower-shedding, longer-living, but just as loving of a companion as the purebred Berner. Still, the Bernedoodle may be more difficult to train than other types of doodles such as the goldendoodle. The Bernedoodle will need daily exercise to keep from turning his playful goofiness into a darker humor of chewing up your furniture or other bad habits. This is especially true if you are not at home for much of the day. As previously mentioned both the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle are incredibly affectionate, devoted dogs. This is a huge positive to the breed as it makes the Bernedoodle one of the most loving and faithful companions in the dog world, but on the downside, they can become anxious and therefore destructive if they do not receive enough companionship. To summarize, we interviewed a few owners of Bernedoodles to get some firsthand descriptions of exactly what this breed is like. Bernedoodles, being fond of younger kids, are extremely affectionate to their families. Many owners boast about their Bernedoodles being incredibly loving and affectionate to them, as well as their family. This cute little dog can be a perfect childhood companion for your children, thanks to their longer average lifespan of years! They can't be left alone for long periods of time, or they start to exhibit behaviors of loneliness and separation anxiety. Bernedoodles are highly affectionate and love being around their human families, especially kids. They love attention and crave regular cuddle sessions. This affectionate breed makes excellent therapy dogs, and for a good reason. So, it is a great idea to go for hikes and discover new places with your companion once in a while. This breed does not respond well to harsh corrections and punishments. A Bernedoodle will exceed your expectations if you provide a positive rewards-based approach in training sessions. They are sensitive to changes in family members moods or feelings. They can get their feelings hurt when harshly scolded but they are always ready to give love and comfort to children and adults alike. Don't Overwork Your Bernedoodle! Bernedoodles love to learn new things and are excited about everything they do, especially if they inherit more of the Poodle parent's traits. However, it is important to keep the training sessions short and let them practice one command at a time. A minute session should be plenty, don't overdo it; otherwise, your puppy might get too tired and won't respond to any command. Is a Bernedoodle Easy To Train? This hybrid breed loves to learn new things. Is a Bernedoodle Good For You? We say yes! But, we admit we're biased so you'll have to decide for yourself. It really depends on your lifestyle. Before choosing any breed, it is important to consider your lifestyle and evaluate whether or not you can provide the best environment to raise a dog and meet all its needs. Because they come in many sizes, it's a no-brainer to go for a Bernedoodle, even if you live in an apartment. Just make sure you can house train your dog, and try to ensure there is always someone to interact with your dog when you are not at home. Bernedoodles are very compatible in apartments as long as they receive regular exercise and stimulation. Nose Butters These are particularly useful for moisturising the nose keeping it clean and damp. They can be purchased at various places and some of them have been used by many pet owners. Some of them are even recommended by vets, however when it comes to your precious bundle of joy, it is always best to do your own research. That way every decision you make will be an informed one. It is worth bearing this in mind therefore when making any decision regarding which products to buy and use. French Bulldog Nose Balms They work more on the inside and deal with any bacteria, burning, soreness or swelling. Since these are all-natural ingredients, they are non-hazardous to your pet, so if they accidentally lick some off, it will not harm them in any way. It is comforting and gentle with a calming effect. Whatever is bothering your Frenchies nose this Balm will bring relief, especially if it is damaged, irritable, delicate, and bleeding. This soother is wholesome, restorative, conditioning and great for many dry nose skin conditions that your Frenchie may experience. Each of these different oils, balms, and creams are all unique and effective in their own way. They also soak into the skin at different rates. It all depends on what the exact issue is, which one you use on your pet at any given time. Some provide almost instant comfort while others provide a more long-lasting relief over time. Although we use them ourselves we should never use them on our pets because they can be harmful. A lot of it boils down to the ingredients in these moisturisers. If your pet licks or ingests any of them it can upset their stomachs severely. Such moisturizers may include: Vaseline Petroleum jelly, Baby oil or anything containing these ingredients. They are dangerous for your pet because they potentially have toxins in them, and they could make your Frenchie sick. You can purchase pet cleansing grooming wipes specifically to use when doing this job. If there happen to be any crusts on the skin, try not to detach them. Done prematurely could cause them to bleed and cause your dog to be uncomfortable. Crust tend to drop off when they are ready to. If they are forcibly removed they will make the skin sore and the area could become infected. This will prevent a build-up of bacteria and infection. Then you can complete the cleaning with a wet wipe. If there is a huge amount of mucus then its best to take your pet to the vet to get checked and rule out any illness. Play a game with him and then end with a big hug. That way your beloved furry friend will associate the cleaning and moisturizing routine with love and fun with you. It will therefore be something they look forward to, rather than shy away from. Are there any scabs or discolouration? Is it significantly more dry than usual? Is your Frenchie labouring to breathe? Discuss any concerns with your vet and let him check your pet regularly, so treatment can start early. Taking care of them means better breathing and less discomfort from a dry and crusty nose. Instead they will be able to enjoy a flawless, cheerful, and dampish noise. You will become confident in maintaining the health and happiness of your dog, by taking this extra necessary care from the beginning. Worked into a regular routine, you and your pet will bond and enjoy this part of your day. Undoubtedly having a French bulldog means you will need to work harder than if you owned another type of dog, as varying health challenges require a lot of loving care and attention. However properly maintaining their health and vitality, with regular cleaning and moisturising, should minimise any dry nose concerns. French Bulldogs are charming and bring so much joy that they are worth all the sacrifice. As with all dogs, this should be a shining wet nose ready to sniff out a treat and interesting smells. But, there are plenty of times when it will become a little too dry and dull. So, why do French Bulldogs get dry noses and what can we do about it to ease any discomfort? Why does my Frenchie have a dry nose? It could moisten up again quickly. But, regular issues with a dry nose could be a sign of a deeper issue with their diet, allergies, or other health issues. This is also true if the nose becomes excessively dry or cracked. So, make sure to take the condition seriously, invest in the right products to soothe the nose, and consult your vet whenever necessary. The good news here is that there are lots of common reasons for Frenchie to end up with dry noses. Other factors such as environmental or dietary issues could play their part too. However, regularly cracked nose or dry noses with additional symptoms could be a sign of something else. That is why it is important to find the cause and then work on the right treatment method. The truth is that dry noses are something that most Frenchie owners will deal with at some point, and to varying degrees. That is why it is vital that you take the time to better understand the causes, treatments, and other considerations. The key points that you need to remember here are as follows. The brachycephalic genetics of French Bulldogs make them more prone to dryness around the nose. This issue may become worsened via environmental conditions, allergies, or other illnesses. Extremely cracked noses may be a sign of a more significant condition or illness. Allergy relief could also help them with other conditions like skin allergies and dandruff. Natural balms work really well to soothe cracked noses. Your vet will always help with concerns and diagnoses if you are worried about your pet. These are just some of the shorter points to help ease your mind if your pet currently has a cracked nose for an unknown reason. Is it common for Frenchies to get dry noses? That is easier said than done when you are a Frenchie and your nose is so far away from your mouth. They will lick their noses when they can but may go a little longer without doing so. Also, they are unlikely to lick their noses when they sleep, which can allow for a drier-than-average nose when they wake up. With that said, it is important to differentiate between a dry nose and a cracked nose. Cracked noses are much rougher with tough bits of flaky skin. Think about it in the same way as your lips. They can get drier in the winter and may need a little more moisture from lip-balm. More problematic lips can get a lot rougher and chapped. Are cracked noses harmful to your Frenchie in any way? Again, in the way that chapped lips are uncomfortable and can lead to bleeding, a dry cracked nose could be equally annoying for dogs. The last thing you want is for your dog to feel any discomfort or pain on a part of their anatomy that is so sensitive. Then there is the other issue of dogs needing their nose to smell. There is a concern that dryness and other issues around the nose could impede their ability to smell and the sensitivity of the tissues What causes French Bulldog dry noses? In order to help keep our Frenchie noses wet and healthy, it helps to understand the causes of this issue. There are a few possible causes that lead to a little dryness now and then. Other factors could cause more frequent cases or those issues of cracked skin. These include the following: 1 Weather conditions This cause is familiar to any dog owner that deals with drier skin in the winter. Colder weather can make skin conditions a lot worse, and even those of us without any diagnosed condition will need to moisturize our hands and face more often. Therefore, it makes sense that our pets go through something similar. Senior dogs may struggle to retain moisture in their skin and this is more obvious in the nose. They may also be more likely to sleep a little longer, which makes the nose even drier when they wake up. There is the possibility of a lack of moisture in the skin because of a more general lack of hydration. This could be as simple as that your dog has just woken up for a long sleep and is yet to drink. But, a disinterest in water or other symptoms of dehydration are cause for concern. Skin conditions are closely related to allergies, whether that means reactions to food, parasites, or environmental factors. French Bulldog dandruff , which you can read more about in our other guide, is a similar issue. So, the two effects may go side-by-side. There are cases where the problems with the skin are a symptom of autoimmune disorders or respiratory illness. In some cases, there may be additional symptoms to take note of. This is a condition where the body produces too much keratin, which then leads to tougher, rougher patches of skin. The likelihood of dryness in the nose makes it a common site for these rougher patches of skin. Unfortunately, this mostly happens for an unknown reason and many vets will see it as a cosmetic issue. Should you go and see your vet about your Frenchies dry nose? It depends on the extent of the problem. A little dryness now and then is normal. Extreme cracking could be the sign of something worse, so here it might help to call on an expert opinion. Your vet can perform tests and see if there is anything else going on, especially if you notice any other issues like sores around the nose, breathing issues, or other signs of poor health. Whatever the reason, they can advise you on what to do next. This includes advice on providing a better environment at home, using products to soothe the skin, and making any necessary changes that could minimize the risk of allergic reactions. What can you do to keep your Frenchies nose moist? Now you know some of the causes, you can figure out the best solution for your pet. As mentioned above, your vet should be able to help you out with all kinds of solutions. But, there is a lot that you can do yourself to provide relief and reduce the frequency of the problem. You can: 1 Consider the atmosphere of the home Dry noses and skin could be due to little more than the atmosphere in the home and the current weather conditions. It is second nature to come home after a long walk in colder temperatures and put the central heating on. But, this can create a drier environment that damages the skin further. A dehumidifier could be a good investment, not just for your Frenchie but for the whole family. These devices will improve the air quality and lessen the risk of skin drying out. Easy access to fresh clean water is essential, whatever the season, so that dogs stay hydrated and healthy. Some pet owners that leave their dogs alone for long periods may accidentally neglect this. It is also important to use safe water bowls, especially if there is a risk of reactions to plastic. Ditch the plastic and bring in clean, safe metal bowls instead 3 Consider a change in diet if the problem is due to food allergies Skin complaints and dry noses via food allergies are rectifiable with some patience and thought. It all comes down to determining what ingredient your dog is allergic to. This can take time as you try different brands and recipes and see how your dog reacts. Consider some fish-based options like sardines for extra Omega-3 oils or an LID option for smaller dogs. What can you do to soothe overly-dry and cracked noses? These solutions are great for dogs where they only experience a little dryness that is easily corrected with environmental stimuli. It is a little different for cracked noses or regular occurrences. The discomfort here and the risk of tissue damage means it pays to treat the skin directly. Your dog can receive immediate relief and a lot of fuss and attention at the same time. Think of it like using a balm on your own skin. The right products can soften the area very quickly and make us feel a lot better. Natural balms with essential oils and butters offer on-going relief and soften the skin on the nose. There are some great products out there that you can buy. Or, you could try making your own versions of these balms if you can source the right ingredients. The best natural solutions should be safe for use on dogs and humans. Therefore, you might find that you have a great new winter moisturizer for the whole family. Well, in reality, a dog's nose can alternate between wet and dry in response to various factors. However, when the nose becomes so dry that it flakes or cracks, there's a problem. Scent is arguably your Frenchie's most important sense. If your Frenchies nose is overly dry, they're uncomfortable and can't efficiently explore the surroundings. Your dog's external skin must be moist and spongy for the sensory organ within the nose to operate at full capacity. Unfortunately, dry noses are particularly common for dogs with flat faces like French Bulldogs. Your French Bulldog's nose could be dry for a number of reasons. It may be due to various changes in their lifestyle or routine. Some common causes for a dry nose on a Frenchie include: Weather When your Frenchie stays too close to a heat source, his nose is bound to become dry. This may be as a result of too much sun exposure. The same way you can get sunburns on the skin is the same way dogs can get sunburns on their noses. To prevent this, you can use pet-safe sunblocks. If your Frenchie's nose gets too dry during the winter, it may be from sleeping near fireplaces. Allergies Frenchies are often prone to contact, seasonal, and food allergies. Allergens can cause your Frenchie's nose to dry up and even crack. They could be allergic to fur, pollen, and dander from other pets. Additionally, certain drinks, foods, and medications could result in allergic reactions to your Frenchie. Plastics are also a predominant cause of nose sensitivity among many dogs. So you could avoid plastic bowls and toys. It is also recommended to avoid the use of plastic buckles in your French Bulldog's harnesses or clothing since BPA toxins can still enter your Frenchie's blood stream. Consult with your vet about your Frenchie's particular sensitivities. Dehydration Your Frenchie may be dehydrated due to insufficient intake of water. Make sure your Frenchie drinks lots of fresh water, particularly in hot, humid weather. They can rule out problems with the kidneys or diabetes, which can cause dehydration. Lazier dogs, particularly seniors, are more prone to dry noses. Dogs lick their noses continually to increase the secretion of the moist-causing hormones. This includes neurological problems that cause excessive licking as well as autoimmune disorders. Make sure to see your vet on a regular basis and report any concerning symptoms. They may suggest lab work to rule out a serious problem. Particularly because you know that French Bulldogs are prone to various health challenges. Most of them contain substances that are harmful to dogs. This includes baby oil, vaseline, mineral oil, petroleum jelly, Aquaphor, and Neosporin. These oils may be effective but they are all derived from petroleum. Shea Butter Some people use shea butter to soften their dry skin. It also works really well on dry dog noses. You can also use it to soothe his dry elbows and paws. Almond Oil Almond oil contains various important vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals that can soothe dry, irritated dog noses. As always, apply just a little. Coconut Oil Coconut oil is one of the safest and most effective, pet-friendly, and natural moisturizers you can find. It also contains various vitamins and minerals. However, once your Frenchie gets used to it, you can apply it liberally on their nose whenever you need to. Cocoa Seed Butter Cocoa seed butter is effective for softening and conditioning dry, chafed, cracked, and sunburned dog noses. You can also use it to moisturize rough paw pads and elbows. If your Frenchie has a warm, dry nose, it can be a little alarming, especially since one of the drawbacks to owning one of these charming little dogs is that they are prone to a plethora of health risks see all health problems here. That said, does a dry nose indicate you have a sick pup on your hands? Generally, no. If you notice any combination of these symptoms, you should definitely get your Frenchie booked in with your veterinarian as soon as possible, as it could be an indicator of a more serious medical condition, such as an auto-immune disease. This is what a healthy French Bulldog puppy nose should look like. If anything, you can expect your French Bulldog to struggle with a dry, cracked, or crusty nose throughout their lifetime. Brachycephalic flat-faced breeds such as French Bulldogs are more prone to having dry noses as they often struggle to lick this area of their face. However, there are also a host of other environmental reasons why your Frenchie might be struggling with a dry nose, including allergies, dehydration, or age. If you notice that your Frenchie seems to have a dry nose more often than not, or that their nose is starting to crack or get crusty, it would be a good idea to keep an eye on their routine as there might be something in their surroundings that is causing this to happen. For those pups struggling with a painful or chronically dry nose, you can look at using a dog-friendly moisturizer to help them with the discomfort you can see my recommendations further down the page. Common reasons why a Frenchie might have a dry nose Aside from their predisposition to having a dry nose, there are also a number of other reasons why your pup might be struggling with this uncomfortable condition. Unless your Frenchie struggles to lick their own nose, you can expect the nose to be damp again within a few minutes of waking. Frenchies need to have small bouts of exercise throughout the day to avoid over-exhaustion, and if you can, it would be worth bringing a small water bottle with you so that they can stay hydrated while out and about, especially during the summer. If you notice that your Frenchie is simply not drinking from their bowl, try giving the dish a thorough clean with soap and water before filling it up with fresh water again. Allergies A dry nose might also indicate that your Frenchie is struggling with an allergic reaction. If an allergy is the cause, you will likely see other symptoms such as: Itchiness, which can be general or localised. Inflamed skin. This condition causes a protein overgrowth and leads to a dry nose that will eventually crust and peel if not cared for properly. Poop is very smelly Poop Meaning — Smelly Poop — By Pawmeal If you have been feeding kibbles all this while, try to switch to home cooked food for a few meals. Or you can try freeze-dried, raw or dehydrated options. Common issues may be due to an inflamed colon or mild inflammation in the gut. It may also be due to parvovirus or parasites. While it is advisable to be careful, there is usually a good chance that the mucus will clear up after a few rounds of bowel movement a couple of days. If the poop is still the same, please visit your favourite vet. The colour can be fresh red or very dark red. However, the causes can range from relatively minor to very serious. A minor issue will be because the stools are too hard which causes abrasion when it is coming out. Extreme issues will be due to the presence of possible ulcers or tumours. It may be trying to replenish its nutrient needs by eating its own poop. Underfeeding may also be another reason that causes this too. More serious diseases like diabetes, thyroid issues can also make your dog extra hungry. These are meant to be considered with caution, and only during the initial discovery of the poop problem. During this period, giving slightly more vegetables or starches is alright, as the purpose is to help cleanse the body and solidify the stools. Feeding bones is also another option. A couple of raw or dehydrated chicken or duck feet or wings do not feed cooked — feed raw, dehydrated, or freeze-dried may help. You can also give some pre and probiotics to help with maldigestion, especially diarrhea issues. Continue for a few meals and monitor the condition of the poop for a couple of days. See if the loose stool improves. Give plenty of clean water during this period too. If your dog drinks by itself from the bowl, then it is great. This can potentially indicate a presence of worms. When the diarrhea or constipation comes with blood, and lasts more than bowel movements or more than 2 days. If your dog experiences vomiting, fever or behavioural change together with diarrhea or constipation — then you need to consult the vet immediately.
