If you have a yard and your Golden will be expected to spend any length of time outside you should provide a form of shelter so they can keep off the cold wet floor in winter and get out of the sun in summer. There are many options for suitable kennels and many of them are reasonably priced. If you fail to keep up a regular schedule of brushing, their coats very quickly become knotted and then matted and these are all but impossible to remove without the help of a pair of scissors. Regular brushing also helps to keep your Goldens coat clean and removes dead hair. When it comes to bathing, Golden Retrievers have a double coat and natural oils that help waterproof them so bathing too often is actually bad for their coats…at least it always used to be. Just be sure if you do wish to bathe them often that you research the shampoo used and pick one suited to regular bathing for Goldens. Human shampoo will never do as it will strip their oils and is too acidic for their skin and will irritate them. And cheap dog shampoos will strip the oils too. You kinda get what you pay for. To keep their coat healthy and prevent irritation you need to remove all the soap. But if your golden is constantly walking pavements and roads, they may never need a trim due to concrete and tarmacs abrasive, nail-file like effect. Anyway, you should regularly check your dogs paws. This can be very uncomfortable for your dog and if it gets out of control even painful. You can quite easily trim your dogs nails at home , or you can take them to the vet where they will do the procedure for you. If you do wish to do it at home, I recommend taking your dog to the vet first and asking for advice on how to do it, being shown and learning from the pros rather than risking it alone from a book. Better safe than sorry! Look inside to make sure they are a healthy looking color, not bright red and inflamed. Also check for lots of small little grainy looking brown dots. These are the droppings of ear mites and a sign of a parasitic infection which should be treated ASAP. Dental Care Dental hygiene is an often overlooked area of dog care by many people but is very important. Much like us, dogs can suffer with tooth decay, cracked teeth, gum disease and a build up of plaque and tartar. Not only does this detract from the overall good looks of your dog, it can be quiet uncomfortable, sometimes painful and can lead to more severe problems if left untreated. So you should regularly check their teeth and gums yourself, make use of available chews that help to clean their teeth and take your dog to a canine dentist every 6 to 12 months. Try to treat your dogs teeth as good as you would treat your own. Parasitic problems Fleas, ticks and other parasites can be a real problem for dogs, leading to many problems ranging from mild skin irritation, to extreme sores and infections, and in the most extreme cases dramatic weight loss, tape worms and Lyme disease. So you should regularly check for parasites in your Golden which is very easy to do if you are sticking to a regular schedule of brushing their coats. Simply spend an extra minute to inspect closer to their skin looking for ticks, fleas or small dots droppings in their fur which would indicate the presence of parasites. Treatment for fleas and ticks can be administered at home as there are many treatments for this available over the counter. Try to make it every 6 months, but once per year as a minimum. This will allow your vet to become familiar with your dog which makes spotting changes easier for them. And it gives them a chance to spot problems early that you without an untrained eye may not pick up on. As always, prevention is better than cure and if there is ever a problem then catching it as early as possible is vital for more effective treatment and minimal pain and discomfort for your pet. Regular visits to the vet allow this early discovery. You will also need to see your vet to have your puppy vaccinated. There are many diseases, some fatal, that can be prevented easily with a course of vaccinations. Distemper, parvovirus and hepatitis as well as the infamous rabies can all be kept at bay with vaccines. A puppy will require shots starting at 6 weeks with a course of various shots taking them up to 18 weeks or so. The rabies shot is administered at about 6 months of age and after this your Golden will require just a yearly top up to maintain protection. Golden Retriever owners usually sigh with relief as their puppy starts the second stage of their dental growth and the development of their permanent teeth. Between 4- 6 months of age , the permanent teeth come up very quickly and push the milk teeth out so you will rarely notice any gaps in their teeth. The adult incisors should be in place by the time your Golden Retriever is 5 months of age. Once they are in place, the milk teeth and canine teeth will be replaced by adult canines, followed by premolars, and lastly the molars. The complete set of adult teeth should be complete by 7- 8 months. Or in other words, they should have 42 brand new teeth. Providing plenty of safe things for your Golden to chew on will help with the painful transition from milk teeth to adult teeth. And once the permanent teeth settle in, you will notice that your little chewing monster will bite, and chew less than they used to. They will also become easier to train to stop biting people. Make sure you supply your growing pup with plenty of chew toys, ropes, and special treats that are designed to help keep the new teeth sparkling white. Occasionally you may find them playing with something on the floor, and you may find a small pearly white tooth, but often your dog will just gobble it down intentionally or otherwise and you will never see them. The chewing helps to dislodge the baby teeth when the new permanent teeth are coming through. Chewing also massages the gums and offers relief to a suffering pup. Give your puppy toys that have a lot of ridges and bumps on the surface. The bumps help to massage the gums and give a measure of relief to your Golden puppy. If their gums are bleeding, and this is a natural thing, try freezing the toy so that it is cooling and will relieve the bleeding when they chew. Train your puppy to let you put your finger in their mouth and you can use small pieces of ice to massage their gums. Teaching them to allow your finger in their mouth without biting it is good training for later when you want to clean their teeth. Your Golden Retriever puppy may lose their appetite when they are teething. Try giving your puppy some dry food as opposed to wet food as it is good for the development of strong gums and teeth. Wet them down, tie them in knots in several places, and put them in the freezer. When your dog chews crazy, throw them a rag and they will chew on it for ages. When your dog is finished chewing on a rag, rinse it off and refreeze for later. This is a cheap easy teething aid for your Golden. Patience and time are required during this stage. If you stay alert, you can guide them gently through it all by quietly taking unacceptable things that they are chewing on and replacing them with a toy of theirs. If you provide plenty of exercise time, lots of toys to play with, and appropriate chew toys during this transition time, it will be easier for your puppy. Step 1- submit an application If you are ready to adopt one of our Australian Labradoodle Puppies, please first submit an application on our Reserve a Puppy page. This deposit will add your name to the waiting list for your preferred litter. As breeders, we do reserve the right to pick of the litter for puppies each litter, breeder will not keep a puppy from every litter though. Pick of the litter will go in the order of deposits made. The deposit will be deducted from the total price of your puppy. Once the decision is made to have a pick from the litter, the deposit is non-refundable. Step 3- Puppies are born Once puppies are born we will send you a birth announcement e-mail. Every week after we will send updates and pictures! If there is a small litter or non-conception, you can either ask for a refund of your deposit or transfer it to the next available litter that you prefer. Step 4-Choosing Your Puppy At 6 weeks of age, we will have puppy picking! Puppies will be picked based on the order of deposits on the waitlist. You will be advised of the puppies' temperament testing before picking to ensure you pick a puppy that will be the best fit for your family! You may meet the puppies in person or by Facetime. Breeder reserves the right to first picks for puppies held back for the breeding program. Step 5- Time for your puppy to go home! At 8 weeks old, puppies may be picked up to go home! PayPal or Venmo will include additional fees if not sent friends and family. Cash or Zelle will not include fees. No personal checks. You will receive his or her medical records, a blanket with the mother and litter mates' scent, a sample of the dog food that the puppy has been eating, puppy training information, and a collar and leash.
