Shop All Cat Food If your dog's eye is swollen and runny, he may have a condition called conjunctivitis. If that sounds alarming, don't panic. The chances that your pooch has caught dog this condition, also called "pink eye" are actually quite slim. To get the lowdown on conjunctivitis in dogs, including what causes it and what you should do to help your pet, keep reading. What Is Conjunctivitis aka Pink Eye? Conjunctivitis refers to a condition in which the pink tissue inside the eyelid, which is called the conjunctiva, becomes inflamed. There are two types of conjunctivitis in dogs. Infectious conjunctivitis, often referred to as pink eye, is caused by a viral or bacterial infection and is rare, says the veterinary science magazine dvm.More commonly seen in dogs is non-infectious conjunctivitis, which can have a number of possible causes. Typically, these fall along the lines of allergies, an irritating substance getting in the eye, injury or trauma to the eye or a congenital abnormality. Tufts University's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine adds that conjunctivitis may be a sign of a more serious underlying condition, such as canine distemper. Is It Contagious? Non-infectious conjunctivitis in dogs is not contagious. If a case of dog pink eye is caused by a rare bacterial infection or a virus, however, the ASPCA warns that the condition can be transmitted by your dog to other dogs. If you suspect your dog might have pink eye, it's a good idea to keep your pup separated from other dogs and to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling him to prevent the infection from spreading to other animals. If your pooch normally shares food and water dishes or bedding with other pets, he should have his own dishes and bedding until his conjunctivitis clears up, and they should be washed thoroughly. You should let any additional caregivers, such as dog walkers, dog daycare attendants or pet sitters, know about your dog's condition and the precautions that you're taking to contain it. Breed Predisposition While conjunctivitis can occur in any breed of dog or mutt, certain breeds are prone to conditions that can place them at a higher risk of conjunctivitis, says Tufts. Cocker spaniels, bulldogs and miniature schnauzers, for example, are prone to dry eye, which is a condition that commonly leads to non-infectious conjunctivitis. A condition called entropion, which is when the edge of the eyelid rolls inward, may also cause the conjunctiva to become inflamed. This condition is common to shar-peis and chow chows , among other breeds. Signs of a Problem As a vigilant pet parent, these are the signs you'll want to keep an eye out for to recognize conjunctivitis in dogs: Red or puffy eyes Eyelids sticking together or squinting Swelling of the eyelid lining the conjunctiva Rubbing or pawing at the eye due to itchiness or discomfort Should Your Pup See a Vet? If you notice any of these signs, you should have your pup checked out by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Your vet will determine whether your dog actually has dog pink eye or a non-infectious case of conjunctivitis. While non-infectious conjunctivitis is not a serious condition in and of itself, it won't clear up on its own without treatment, and it may point to a more serious health problem that needs to be addressed. Additionally, if left untreated, your dog could sustain a permanent eye injury or even vision loss. Diagnosing Conjunctivitis in Dogs In addition to performing a thorough examination of your dog's eye and eyelids, your vet will want to perform a general physical to determine his overall condition, says Tufts. Diagnostic tests your vet might run include bacterial cultures, a fluorescein eye stain test to check for corneal ulcers or abrasions, a Schirmer's tear test to check your pup's tear production, and a test for glaucoma. They may also perform several blood tests to screen for underlying illnesses. Treating Conjunctivitis The course of treatment your vet prescribes ultimately depends on what is causing the conjunctivitis. If they determine that your dog does indeed have pink eye, he'll likely be prescribed a bactericidal or fungicidal ointment to be applied to the eye topically. Your dog might also be given anti-inflammatory medication to help with swelling and discomfort. If a foreign object is responsible for the irritation and swelling, your pup may need to be placed under general anesthesia in order for the vet to remove it without risking further eye injury. Of course, if your dog's conjunctivitis turns out to be a sign of a more serious illness, your vet will work with you to take steps to treat the underlying condition. Helping Your Dog at Home Natural and home remedies may be helpful in providing relief to your pet, although they should never be a replacement for veterinary care. Wash your hands thoroughly before touching his eyes and face to avoid causing more irritation. You should always check with your vet before applying any herbal or homeopathic remedies to be sure the ingredients are safe and won't interact harmfully with any of his prescribed medications or interfere with treatment of his underlying conditions. Non-infections conjunctivitis, while uncomfortable for your dog may only be an irritant to your dog, but that doesn't mean the signs should be taken lightly. Now that you're armed with knowledge of what to watch for, you'll be able to take prompt action to get your pup a proper diagnosis and treatment to protect his vision and overall health. Daily Paws' Editorial Guidelines Published on May 10, Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, presents similarly in dogs as it does in people. Characterized by red or pink irritated eyes and often accompanied by discharge , this common eye infection is not a pleasant experience for dogs or owners but is luckily treatable in most circumstances. Conjunctivitis in dogs can have many different causes, many of which require specific treatments, so it's a good idea to see your veterinarian if you begin to notice symptoms of pink eye in your pooch. Because of this, it is helpful to know the basics of the disease so you can keep an eye out literally for anything concerning. She says, "They can get it from inhalant allergies, such as pollen or grass, or from a secondary bacterial infection from a topical irritant, like smoke, sand, or wind from hanging their heads out the car window. Pink eye can be a condition on its own, or it can be a symptom of a different eye disease. In addition to physical irritants in the eye, abnormal eyelids or eyelashes, dry eye, and allergies, other possible causes of conjunctivitis in dogs include certain parasites , tumors , and trauma. In most cases, the cause of pink eye will determine the treatment, so it's important to consult your veterinarian before attempting to treat your dog's pink eye on your own. These symptoms are very similar to the symptoms we associate with pink eye in humans, including: Redness Discharge that can appear clear or a mucous texture Inflammation Swelling around the eyes If you notice your dog rubbing or pawing at their eyes, or squinting or blinking more than usual, this can also be a sign that they are experiencing irritation that might not yet be visible to you. These symptoms can appear in both eyes or in just one, and are sometimes accompanied by other symptoms, such as nasal discharge, coughing, or sneezing. Is Conjunctivitis Contagious in Dogs? Pink eye is notoriously contagious in humans, but luckily, Graham says most cases in dogs are not contagious to people or other dogs. However, as always, it's best to consult your veterinarian about your dog's specific case to determine how careful you should be until their conjunctivitis clears up. Graham adds that this is not usually the case for conjunctivitis in cats , which she says is "usually caused by a virus herpesvirus or other infectious agent that can be contagious between cats and can occasionally be spread to humans. Your vet will likely perform a variety of diagnostic tests to determine and develop the treatment plan that is best for your dog. Eye drops are one of the most common treatments for pink eye in both dogs and humans, but the specific drops may differ depending on your dog's case. Your vet can determine what eye drops are best for your dog and show you how to safely apply them. Certain causes of pink eye may require other treatments, such as medications or surgical procedures. While it might be tempting to try home remedies to treat your dog's conjunctivitis at home, this is not a good idea, and it is absolutely worth it to take your dog to a veterinarian to get a diagnosis first. How to Prevent Pink Eye in Dogs While some causes of pink eye in dogs are nearly impossible to prevent, such as dry eye or entropion, many conjunctivitis cases can be prevented. According to Graham, one of the easiest actions you can take to reduce the chances of your dog developing pink eye is to avoid letting your dog hang their head out of a moving car's window. Not only can your dog's eyes be struck by flying debris, but even the wind itself can irritate your dog's eyes. Ensuring your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations can also help reduce the likelihood of viral causes of conjunctivitis. It is also a good idea to supervise your dog while they play to discourage play that might result in eye injuries. However, in terms of preventing pink eye, the absolute best thing you can do for your dog is to take them to the vet as soon as you notice eye symptoms or discomfort. Catching conjunctivitis early can greatly reduce the severity of the condition, making it much easier to treat. Was this page helpful? Schirmer tear test2 Is canine conjunctivitis contagious? Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious among canines as well as humans. If you suspect your dog has pink eye, keep him or her isolated from other animals and people in the house. Be sure to wash your hands well after handling the affected dog to prevent the infection from spreading. While the chances of a human contracting canine conjunctivitis from their dog are minimal, the odds of a dog getting it from their pet parent are much higher. Note that dogs can also get conjunctivitis from humans, so if anyone in the household has pink eye, take precautions to prevent its spread, such as washing hands regularly, avoiding contact with the face, and sterilizing shared spaces within the home. Are certain breeds more at risk? Pink eye can occur in any breed, but some dog breeds are prone to hereditary conditions that may increase their risk of conjunctivitis. For instance, English Bulldogs , Miniature Schnauzers , and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are genetically predisposed to dry eye, which commonly leads to conjunctivitis in dogs. Irish Setters and Norweigan Elkhounds are prone to entropion 3, an abnormality of the eyelids in which the eyelid rolls inward, which can also cause inflammation of the conjunctiva. Alternatively, dogs with protruding eyes like the Pug are at greater risk of infection caused by foreign substances in the bloodstream. How to treat conjunctivitis in dogs You'll need to see a vet for a specific answer on how to treat conjunctivitis in dogs, as every case is unique. The approach they recommend will largely depend on the particular cause of canine conjunctivitis, as well as the dog's individual medical history. For example, vets will likely prescribe antibiotics to dogs with bacterial eye infections. The medication might come in the form of eye droplets, pills, or ointments. Irritants are the primary cause of pink eye in dogs, and treatment typically involves flushing the eyes and alleviating inflammation with ointments and eye drops. In the case of allergic conjunctivitis, your vet might recommend Benadryl for dogs. Other vet-approved treatments for conjunctivitis could include antihistamines, steroid eye drops, NSAID pain relievers, and artificial tears. They'll likely advise you to clean the pup's eye and apply a cold compress to relieve the irritation. Treatment for secondary conjunctivitis must address the underlying dog health issue responsible for the pink eye symptoms. Some triggers, including eye tumors and eyelid deformities, may require surgery. Pro Tip: Compare pet insurance plans to see how much money you could save on diagnsotic testing, prescription drugs, recommended surgeries. How long does conjunctivitis last in dogs? It depends; anywhere from a couple of days for mild irritations to three weeks with viral conjunctivitis. Most dogs with pink eye will make a full recovery, but others may experience secondary symptoms for the rest of their life, leading to a permanent loss of vision in rare cases. Depending on the cause of the condition, your dog may require lifelong therapy. How to prevent conjunctivitis in dogs Viral conjunctivitis may be challenging to prevent. Try boosting your dog's immune system with vitamins and regular physical activity to maintain a strong defense against viruses. Also, ensure your pet stays up-to-date on all the routine vaccinations to protect them from illnesses spread through unvaccinated schedules. Bacterial conjunctivitis can also be tricky to prevent, but keep your pup's area clean and sterile to kill bacteria and keep them from spreading. If your canine companion has allergies, try to ensure the environment is free of mold, dust, and dander. Key Takeaways Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball. The symptoms of conjunctivitis in dogs can include discharge from the eye, redness, swelling, squinting or blinking more than usual, excessive pawing at the face, and sensitivity to the touch. If you notice any of these symptoms, be sure to take your pet to the veterinarian. Your vet will be able to determine the type of conjunctivitis and how to treat it. Dogs typically make a full recovery, but they can be left with permanent eye damage in rare cases. Do you want to find the best pet insurance? Conjunctivitis, also called pink eye, is a common condition in dogs just like it is in humans. The term conjunctivitis means inflammation swelling of the conjunctiva, which is the tissue covering the eyeball and eyelids. This tissue is a mucous membrane, which is a layer of cells that make mucus. Dogs have a nictitating membrane often called a third eyelid , which is located at the inner corner of each eye and is made of conjunctiva. Normal, healthy conjunctiva is usually pink in color, though it can be pigmented in some dog breeds. When inflammation of this tissue conjunctivitis occurs, the mucous membranes swell, become itchy, and turn brighter pink or red. This occurs most often in young adults, but it can occur at any age. Frequent contributors include environmental allergens, such as dust, pollen, molds, mites, perfumes, and shampoos; food allergens usually certain proteins ; and atopy a genetic tendency to develop allergies. Viral Conjunctivitis Any breed of dog may develop viral conjunctivitis if they encounter viruses that cause inflammation in the eye membranes. These viruses are usually quite contagious and can take 3 to 4 weeks to fully resolve. Examples of viruses that can cause these signs in dogs include canine distemper virus and canine herpesvirus. Bacterial Conjunctivitis Primary bacterial conjunctivitis is uncommon in dogs, and there are no known age, gender, or breed predispositions for it. More commonly, secondary bacterial infections occur in the eyes because of underlying medical issues. These medical conditions include chronic dry eye, eyelid abnormalities, and corneal ulceration scrapes to the outer layer. The most common types of bacteria that cause conjunctivitis are Staphylococcus or Streptococcus, which are both very contagious for dogs. Other medical conditions that can make a dog more prone to conjunctivitis include: Immune-mediated conditions Tumors of the eyelid or conjunctiva Keratoconjunctivitis sicca dry eye Eyelid abnormalities such as entropion rolling in of the lower eyelid , ectropion rolling out of the lower eyelid , or abnormal eyelash growth Blocked tear ducts Trauma to the eye from smoke, foreign objects, or pollutants Glaucoma high pressure in the eye Uveitis low pressure in the eye from inflammation Breed-associated conditions such as nodular episcleritis in Collies Parasites uncommon Symptoms of Conjunctivitis in Dogs When your dog has pink eye, the membranes of the eye become red and swollen. Often, they are itching, burning, or painful, causing dogs to rub their faces on rugs or with their paws. Squinting or excessive blinking is often noted because of discomfort in the eye. Normally, there is a cloudy white, yellow, or green tinged mucus-like discharge from the affected eye s. Usually both eyes are affected or will become affected unless the inflammation is secondary to trauma, eyelid abnormalities, blocked tear ducts, or tumors. Other clinical signs such as generalized itching, hair loss around the eyes, nasal discharge, sneezing, coughing, and lethargy may also occur. Often, the same clinical signs are the same no matter what the underlying cause. Usually, the cause requires investigation with your veterinarian through a routine exam. How Veterinarians Diagnose Conjunctivitis in Dogs Your veterinarian will perform a thorough physical examination as well as a thorough ophthalmic eye examination to look for any medical problems that may be causing the conjunctivitis. The ophthalmic examination consists of: A full examination of the surrounding eye structures, including the eyelids, fur around the eye, eyelashes, third eyelid, and tear ducts. Tear production testing called Schirmer tear testing , which is a non-invasive test that checks the amount of tears produced by both eyes. Corneal stain testing called Fluorescein stain testing , which is a non-invasive test used to check the outer layer of the eye, called the cornea, for any damage such as scrapes and cuts. A yellowish stain is put in the eye, and a special light in a dark room is used to show any underlying damage. Intraocular pressure testing measures the pressure in both eyes, which is helpful in diagnosing glaucoma and uveitis. Additional testing—such as bacterial culture and sensitivity, conjunctival scraping or biopsy, allergy testing, viral testing, and ultrasound of the eyeball—and procedures like tear duct flushing are performed when needed. Treatment of Conjunctivitis in Dogs Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis is most commonly treated with eye drops or ointments containing steroids. Sometimes oral steroids and antihistamines are also recommended if there is systemic inflammation. Prevention is most important with allergic conjunctivitis, so you must avoid the underlying allergens affecting your dog. Allergic skin testing, flea preventatives, environmental changes, and food trials may be recommended by your veterinarian. Bacterial conjunctivitis is often treated with topical antibiotics, though sometimes oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications may also be used depending on the severity of infection. Viral conjunctivitis is often treated with time and oral antioxidants to boost the immune system, and sometimes with either oral or topical anti-viral medications. Dogs diagnosed with eyelid or eyelash abnormalities will require surgical correction to avoid chronic issues. Dogs diagnosed with chronic dry eye will require lifelong medications to stimulate tear production. Dogs with immune-mediated medical issues will require immunomodulatory medications those that affect the immune system both orally and topically, often for their lifetime. Prevention of Conjunctivitis in Dogs In general, preventing further damage to the eye while treating the underlying issue is most important for healing. An Elizabethan collar or pet cone is helpful to avoid your dog rubbing their face or scratching their eyes, which can cause abrasions scrapes or even perforations holes in the cornea. Frequent veterinary rechecks are often recommended to check healing and to change treatment if necessary. Your veterinarian may recommend a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist eye doctor or dermatologist if clinical signs do not improve, quickly worsen, or recur and become chronic issues. Dogs diagnosed with chronic dry eye will require medications such as cyclosporine or tacrolimus to encourage tear production. Terramycin is an over-the-counter antibacterial ophthalmic ointment that may be recommended, although it is not always the recommended or correct therapy for conjunctivitis in dogs. This is found to be helpful in many cases of feline conjunctivitis, including viral and bacterial, but it is not used as frequently for canine conjunctivitis. Home Remedies for Conjunctivitis in Dogs Home remedies can be used to help with discomfort and to keep the eye clean but will usually not treat the underlying medical issue. Do not perform an eye flush at home without first consulting your veterinary team to ensure no further injury is made to the eye. There are some holistic products that can be administered topically around the eye or orally to avoid tear duct blockage, which can cause conjunctivitis in some dogs. Recovery and Management of Conjunctivitis in Dogs Most dogs have an excellent prognosis when recovering from conjunctivitis. Chronic, recurrent, or severe cases may have a guarded uncertain prognosis depending on the cause. Many chronic or recurrent cases require lifelong therapy by controlling underlying allergies, stimulating tear production, or treating systemic or ophthalmic immune-mediated diseases. Frequent veterinary visits may be necessary to determine the best course of action and to assess response to therapy. Conjunctivitis in dogs is often very contagious if viral or bacterial. If your dog is fully vaccinated, then viral transmission is less likely. Viral conjunctivitis is not contagious to humans. Always check with your veterinary to discuss what vaccines are recommended for your pet. Though primary bacterial conjunctivitis is rare in dogs, it is possible to spread to humans by direct contact. It is important to wash your hands before and after touching your dog if bacterial conjunctivitis is diagnosed. Allergic, cancerous, immune-mediated, and chronic dry eye conditions are not directly contagious to other dogs but can be if bacteria invade the eye. Will conjunctivitis in dogs go away by itself? Some forms of canine conjunctivitis can resolve on their own in dogs with otherwise healthy immune systems, but dogs usually require therapy to avoid chronic changes to the eyes and full resolution of the squinting, redness, pain, and discharge. What happens if conjunctivitis in dogs is left untreated? Besides being painful, this can set up your dog for lifelong chronic infections. How long does conjunctivitis in dogs last? The duration of clinical signs depends on the underlying cause. With appropriate treatment, bacterial conjunctivitis is usually fully resolved within 5 to 7 days. Viral conjunctivitis can take up to 3 to 4 weeks for full resolution. Allergic conjunctivitis will persist until the underlying allergen is discovered and eliminated. Chronic dry eye and immune-mediated conditions are often lifelong and require continued therapy. Featured Image: iStock. Today our Charlotte vets share some of the causes, symptoms and treatments for this relatively common condition in dogs. What is conjunctivitis in dogs? This mucous membrane is very similar to the lining of the nose or mouth and the purpose of the conjunctiva is to act as the eye's protective barrier against infections and foreign objects. When this membrane becomes infected or inflamed the condition is called conjunctivitis, or more commonly known as 'pink eye'. What causes conjunctivitis in dogs? This condition in dogs can be caused by a number of issues including: allergies, irritation from foreign bodies, viral infections, tumors in the eye region, breed specific conditions such as nodular episcleritis in Collies, tear film deficiency, abnormalities of the eye, obstructed tear ducts, parasitic infections, injury to the eye, or an underlying eye condition such as glaucoma, ulcerative keratitis, or anterior uveitis. What are the symptoms of conjunctivitis in dogs? Conjunctivitis is an uncomfortable condition that may cause your dog to paw at their eye, blink or squint. You may also notice clear or green discharge from the eye or that the white of the eyes, eyelids or area surrounding your dogs eye are red and swollen. Often conjunctivitis will start in one eye then quickly spread to the other through contamination, although in cases where allergies or or viral infection are the cause both eyes can be affected right from the start. If your dog is showing signs of conjunctivitis, even if symptoms seem very mild, contact your vet as soon as possible. Left untreated conjunctivitis can lead to permanent eye damage. What is the treatment for conjunctivitis in dogs? The best treatment for your dog's conjunctivitis will depend upon the underlying cause of the condition. Following a thorough eye examination your vet will determine the cause and the best treatment for your dog. In cases where bacterial infection is causing your dog's conjunctivitis, antibiotics and eyedrops are typically prescribed. If allergies are the suspected cause your vet may prescribe an antihistamine to help make your dog's eyes more comfortable, or if there is a foreign body irritating your dog's eye your vet will remove it while your dog is under sedation or local anesthetic. Some dog's suffer from conjunctivitis caused by a blocked tear duct in which case surgery followed by eye drops and antibiotics will be required. If your dog is persistently pawing at their eyes while being treated it may be necessary to have them wear a cone or Elizabethan collar to prevent rubbing and allow the eye to heal. Can I get conjunctivitis from my dog? While it's unlikely that you will catch conjunctivitis from your canine companion it is possible if the cause of your dog's eye condition is a parasite such as roundworms. Will my dog completely recover from conjunctivitis? Most dogs will make a full recovery from conjunctivitis however it's important to note that early treatment is essential for avoiding complications due to conjunctivitis. If your dog is showing signs of conjunctivitis contact your primary vet to make an appointment for an examination as soon as possible. A Little Crust or Goop — Tears are an important part of good eye care for your dog. Tears provide nourishment and oxygen to the cornea and help get rid of debris and dust that can be become trapped in the eye. Sometimes the tears that naturally flow tend to become crusted around the eyes particularly in the morning or after a long daytime nap. It should be easily removed. This happens because these tears have a pigment that turns dark when exposed to air for any length of time. This can also be caused by a yeast infection on the face. Wiping the eyes and surrounding area with a warm damp cloth or eye cleaner should take care of the stains. If not, or the eyes become painful, see a vet. Watery and clear — Various conditions can cause excessive eye-watering, including blocked tear ducts, irritants, allergies, corneal wounds, anatomical abnormalities or glaucoma. The dog should be seen by a vet to prevent eventual blindness. What starts as a small eye infection can develop into something more serious, so have a vet examine your dog. They have to just deal with allergens, dirt, dust or what have you and hope that we keep their eyes clean. As much of an effort as they make to clean themselves, their eyes are one part of their bodies they cannot clean themselves. Here are a few ways you can prevent eye discharge and boogers in your Labradoodle puppy. Observe your dog and his surroundings to see if there are things that are bothering his eyes on a regular basis. If so, try to avoid these things. Make sure the dog is eating a healthy diet in clean non-plastic dishes and receives fresh water daily. As an owner, you should make it a regular routine to give them a good once-over. Check their mouth for sore or abnormalities, check their body for lumps or pests like ticks, look in their eyes, and examine their paws for cuts or abrasions. Many things can cause eye staining. As mentioned above, the type or color of discharge can often be a good indication of the cause or what can be developing. Eye staining is usually caused by excessive tear production, but it can also be an indication of a serious eye problem. Certain dogs are more prone to tear staining, and poodles are one of those dog breeds. Unsanitary conditions can also cause eye staining as can eating out of plastic bowls. Here are some medical causes of tear staining. Unusually large tear glands Unusually small tear duct openings Stress Glaucoma or another eye disease Inverted eyelid. Could it be pink eye? This common childhood condition, also known as red eye or conjunctivitis, affects people, cats, and our canine companions. If caused by bacteria or viruses, it can be infectious. Noninfectious conjunctivitis can be caused by allergic reactions, irritants, or trauma injuries. While contagious conjunctivitis is common among cats and schoolchildren, most canine cases involve seasonal allergies or pollen exposure, injuries like cuts or scratches, or the presence of a small foreign object — anything from a grain of sand to a sliver of bark, piece of grass, tiny leaf, or small insect. In those cases, secondary bacterial infections may develop. According to veterinary ophthalmologist David T. In contrast to canine conjunctivitis, feline conjunctivitis is almost always primary and attributable to infectious pathogens viral, chlamydial, or bacterial. Bacterial conjunctivitis in dogs almost always occurs secondary to an underlying disease that alters normal resident conjunctival flora and favors bacterial proliferation. If you think your dog might have conjunctivitis, see your veterinarian. An eye exam can rule out corneal diseases, disorders of the tear ducts or tear production, eyelid abnormalities, or parasites of the conjunctiva or eyelids. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis because what works for simple conjunctivitis will not treat these more serious underlying problems. Your veterinarian may perform certain tests, such as fluorescein staining to detect corneal ulcers or superficial abrasions, the Schirmer tear test to determine whether your dog is producing sufficient tears, and a thorough exam of the external eyelids, third eyelid, and conjunctiva. If needed, additional tests can check for specific bacteria, the distemper virus, glaucoma, and other illnesses. Treatment may include thorough rinsing or irrigation to remove foreign objects or irritating substances, medication to correct insufficient tear production or eyelid infections, antibacterial eye ointments for secondary bacterial infections, or anti-inflammatory eye medications to help reduce swelling. Types of conjunctivis include: -Serous conjunctivitis, which is a mild not serious condition, causes membranes to look pink and swollen, with a clear, watery discharge. This condition is usually caused by irritants such as dust, allergens, and cold or windy weather. Household chemicals, lawn and garden sprays, and smoke from cigarettes or wood-burning stoves or fireplaces are potential causes of serous conjunctivitis. While foreign objects tend to affect a single eye, environmental factors that cause allergic conjunctivitis often affect both eyes. The conjunctiva is usually red and inflamed, and symptoms may include squinting; a thick, ropey, mucous-like discharge; and corneal scarring. The resulting discharge resembles mucus, and if the problem persists, the rough surface can be a chronic irritant. Puppies and young dogs are typical follicular conjunctivitis patients, and the illness usually subsides with age. Thick secretions of pus and mucus may form a crust on the eyelids. During or shortly after birth, bacteria may move behind the eyelid. Prompt veterinary treatment is important because untreated neonatal conjunctivitis can result in corneal damage and blindness. Eyeworms, as they are commonly called, are transmitted to dogs by insects. Both adult and larval eyeworms can produce symptoms ranging from mild tearing or discharge to conjunctivitis, keratitis inflammation of the cornea , or corneal ulcers. Other causes In addition to injurious conditions like corneal ulcers and keratitis, blepharitis inflammation of the eyelids and skin diseases that affect the eyelids can all contribute to conjunctivitis. Some upper respiratory diseases, including kennel cough, involve viruses and bacteria that can produce conjunctivitis in one or both eyes along with coughing, sneezing, lethargy, decreased appetite, fever, and nasal discharge. In some dogs, conjunctivitis is caused by anatomical irregularities, such as loose or drooping eyelids that cannot close completely, or eyelids that roll inward, or lashes that grow in the wrong direction, any of which can cause lashes to rub against the cornea. An irritating foreign object can create serious eye problems if left untreated, especially if the dog is doing her best to dislodge it. Underlying problems that result in conjunctivitis should always be treated. For example, artificial tears and lubricants help dogs with keraconjunctivitis sicca, or dry eye, along with topical antibiotics to resolve bacterial infections or concurrent corneal ulcers. Abnormal eyelids or eyelashes can be treated surgically. Conjunctivitis accompanying upper respiratory infections is typically treated with topical antibacterial medication and supportive care. Allergic reactions can be challenging because dogs, like people, can be allergic to all kinds of things. Change furnace and air-conditioner filters frequently, and experiment with air purifiers or humidifiers to see if they help prevent symptoms. Parasitic conjunctivitis requires the physical removal of eyeworms or larvae, which can be accomplished by flushing the conjunctival sac with sterilized saline or by removing them with a fine forceps or cotton swab while the dog is sedated. Treatment with a parasiticide such as moxidectin is reported to be even more effective than mechanical removal, especially where eyeworms are endemic. Home First Aid Sterile saline solutions are widely available, and the same products can be used to rinse foreign objects or irritants from the eyes of both canine and human patients. For general first aid, keep a sterile eye rinse on hand. Most natural food markets and some pharmacies sell eye washes for pets. This solution should be freshly made and stored in the refrigerator for no more than a day or two before use. To be sure the solution is completely clear, strain it through a paper coffee filter before applying. To make your own, simply saturate cotton balls or a cotton pad and dab around the eye. Solution released from the cotton will rinse the eye. A sterile spray bottle can also be used as well. Simply spray a fine mist of solution over the eye area. Treating Conjunctivitis at Home The easiest form of this disease to treat at home is serous conjunctivitis. Infection-fighting ophthalmic gels and rinses, such as Vetericyn products, are sold through veterinary clinics and pet supply stores. Some come with a cone-shaped applicator that helps control delivery. Herbal eye drops, which can be made at home or purchased at most pet supply or natural food stores, can help in many cases. Halo Cloud Nine Herbal Eye Wash contains eyebright extract, goldenseal extract, boric acid, and sea salt. NHV Ey-Eas eye drops contain chamomile, eyebright, goldenseal, and rosemary in a base of purified water and glycerine. Several eye-friendly herbs are effective, gentle, and well tolerated by most canine patients. To brew any of these herbs as a tea called an infusion , add 1 teaspoon dried herb to 1 cup boiling water, cover, and let stand until cool. Add 1 teaspoon unrefined sea salt, if available, or any table salt. Alternatively, dilute the tea with any over-the-counter saline solution labeled for eye use. You want the result to be slightly salty, like tears. Strain the mixture through paper coffee filter to remove any plant parts or undissolved salt. Apply with an eye dropper, cotton balls, or spray bottle every two to three hours as needed. A broad array of medicinal compounds in the flowers of the plant, including various essential oils, flavonoids, saponins, triterpene alcohols, and carotenes, combine to help speed cell reproduction and inhibit bacteria and fungi at the site of injury. Cool calendula tea works well as an eye wash for conjunctivitis, where its mild but predictable astringency combines with bacteria-fighting properties to reduce irritation and infection. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile is often recommended as an eye wash ingredient. Follow the tea-brewing instructions above and apply when cool. Best known as a uterine relaxant and whelping aid, red raspberry leaf is an astringent herb containing polypeptides, flavonoids, and tannins. Its tea works well as a first-aid rinse for cuts and abrasions. This makes it especially appropriate for conjunctivitis that is secondary to bacterial or fungal infections. Goldenseal quickly reduces inflammation and redness. Because the plant part used is the root rather than leaves, goldenseal tea should be brewed as a decoction rather than an infusion. Combine 1 cup water with 1 teaspoon chopped dried root, cover, bring to a boil, and simmer over low heat for 20 minutes, then remove from heat with cover in place and let cool to room temperature. Prepare as a decoction, like goldenseal. Because the berberine in this solution can irritate the eyes, dilute this tea with an equal or greater part of chamomile or raspberry leaf tea, some other soothing infusion, or a saline solution. Its mild astringent and antiseptic qualities make it effective in the treatment of conjunctivitis and inflammation. In addition, eyebright is considered an at-risk herb because of over-harvesting. Most herbalists agree that eyebright can safely be eliminated from herbal eye formulas. Another widely recommended product that has not been shown to be effective against conjunctivitis is colloidal silver. This solution, in which minute particles of silver are suspended in water, has been marketed for decades as a natural infection-fighter and as a treatment for conjunctivitis. In , the Journal of Wound Care published a study in which three different colloidal silver solutions had no effect on the growth of test organisms. Support Therapies In addition to treatments that address conjunctivitis directly, consider some with a less obvious healing connection. When Chloe, my eight-year-old Labrador Retriever, developed a bright red left eye with an oozing white discharge, her veterinarian, Tia Nelson, DVM, diagnosed conjunctivitis. Because Dr. Acupuncture is another supportive therapy. Keratitis, chronic conjunctivitis, and all sorts of eye irritations typically respond favorably to acupuncture, and cataracts or even blindness may respond. Acupuncture needles positioned to bring the liver back into balance would then restore the body to a state of harmony. Various energy healing therapies, such as Reiki and Jin Shin Jyutsu, are also used to restore balance and health to the body. Freelance writer CJ Puotinen lives in Montana.

Ontario, Canada LOL, years ago my OH came home from a neighbourhood yard sale with the big ceramic bowl from a mix-master. I guess he felt he should buy Something but I had no use for it and no place to store it and I wasn't pleased. Till I needed a new water bowl for the dog and put it into service. It was great. Heavy, safe materials, easily cleaned. I began to appreciate it to the extent that when I dropped a can on it and it cracked I went looking for a new one and found a nearly identical one at a thrift store for only a couple of dollars. Oban's food bowl was not such a success. It's stainless steel and had the rubber strip around the bottom like the blue slow feeder one in the article. I got it after having a three day migraine when the sound of him pushing his bowl around on the floor after emptying it was just driving me up the wall. That darn rubber strip lasted about 15 minutes before he had it right off and had tried to eat bits of it. I gave up. He still pushes the empty bowl around but not as much as when he was a puppy. The 7 Best Dog Bowls for Labradors 1. The snap-on bowl holder helps prevent water and food spillages while your dog is in the crate, especially for excited eaters that tend to flip over their bowls. The bowl itself is made with rust-resistant stainless-steel metal that is easy to clean and dishwasher safe, so your dog will always have a clean bowl to eat out of. There are multiple sizes available for you to choose and we recommend getting a larger size if you have a Labrador. Pros Snap-on holder to prevent spilling Easy to assemble onto the crate Adjustable to any crate Made with rust-resistant stainless steel Available in multiple sizes Made for wire folding crates 2. The bowl is made with a high-quality stain-resistant hard plastic, making it tough for bowl chewers and scratchers to destroy it. The JW Pet Bowl uses a thick rubber trim on the bottom of the bowl to prevent skidding and spilling as your dog eats, so this bowl is a great solution for sloppy eaters. One issue we found is with the glue from the label on the inside, which is not easy to remove and can be a pain to clean for the first time. Pros Made with stain-resistant hard plastic The rubber trim on the bottom to prevent spills Dishwasher safe Available in three different colors Cons Plastic may cause an allergic reaction Label glue in the inside is hard to remove 3. The heavyweight design helps prevent tipping and spilling with the weighted bottom since it can be too heavy to tip for some dogs. The bowl is dishwasher safe and easy to hand clean, keeping it free from germs and bacteria. Because of the fragility of this bowl, we kept it out of our Top 2 spots. The only other issue we found is that the colors may vary from the picture, which can be disappointing. Pros The heavyweight design prevents tipping Dishwasher safe and easy to clean Available in multiple sizes Stoneware is fragile and easily broken Colors may vary from picture 4. This is a great bowl and stand combo for dogs that need their dishes elevated for easy access, making mealtime a more comfortable experience. The stand itself is plastic and has rubber feet at the bottom to prevent skidding and moving as your dog eats. The problem is that the plastic stand is hard to clean and it is not dishwasher safe, which can cause bacteria to build up. One last concern we had is that the plastic material of the stand feels fragile and weak, which may break from rough and aggressive eaters. See On Chewy Does your dog suffer from a medical condition such as arthritis or spinal issues? An elevated dog bowl may provide much-needed relief because your dog will no longer need to bend down as far to reach his food. At the time of writing, there were only two elevated slow feeders available. Fortunately, one of them is nothing short of amazing… The Neater Slow Feeder comes in a kit allowing you to choose between 5 and 7. You can even remove the legs completely allowing you to use this as a regular slow-feed bowl. Even though this feeder is on the larger size, the Neater Slow Feeder could be used by dogs of any size. Best of all, its unique egg-crate design slowed down all types of dogs during feeding — even flat-faced dogs! The large size of the Neater Slow Feeder made the bowl difficult to tip over, and even our overly food-excited yellow Labrador, Tucker, failed to push the bowl around while eating. However, the larger size had one drawback. At inches long and .Our Chihuahua tester, Fiona, had to pace back and forth and even climb into the bowl to get her small meal. This is a minor issue as elevated slow feeders are not aimed at small dogs anyway. But for medium to large dogs? This is as good as it gets. The best ceramic slow-feed dog bowls? Because of this, I find myself unable to declare any ceramic slow feeder an outright winner. First, ceramic slow feeders are much more expensive than their plastic or metal counterparts. I am happy to pay more for a product that performs. But the ceramic slow-feed dog bowls I tested did anything but. Every ceramic bowl was flawed. The best-performing ceramic slow feeder, the Magisso Happy Pet Project Ceramic Bowl , was unsuited for wider snouts and flat faces. The sizing also ran small making this bowl unsuitable for larger dogs. The Petrageous Slow-Feed Bowl had a raised paw print design that allowed kibble to fall between the gaps, slowing down feeding. However, the imprint sat low in the bowl and could be covered with a single cup of kibble. Any additional cups saw it function as a standard dog bowl. Finally, many ceramic slow feeders are not dishwasher-safe. If you want to clean these bowls, you must do it the old-fashioned way — roll up your sleeves and start scrubbing. However, right now, I see no good reason to choose a ceramic slow feeder over our other recommendations. Check out our ceramic dog bowl guide for other ceramic bowls that we have tested and reviewed. While our top picks stood out as the best slow-feed bowls, the following contained flaws that held them back. If they work for you, then I am happy to hear it. However, based on our testing, we see no reason to choose these over our top picks. The AmazonBasics Anti-Bloat Slow Feeder came in three different designs that performed worse and felt less sturdy than our top pick. Given that this is competing at a similar price, we find little reason to recommend it. Well, let me assure you that this is one of the slipperiest slow feeders we tested, sliding over tiles, wood and concrete with minimal effort from our dogs. Ethical Pets had an interesting idea. Dogs can worm food around with their nose, and it pops out the side. Unfortunately, this worked better in theory than practice. The high ridges were only suitable for pointier-nosed pups, and the bowl was a no-go for wet food. The bowl also had a sliding problem with the non-skid base failing to hold the bowl in place while our dogs feasted. I really wanted to like the Gobble Stopper because the idea behind it is unique. Unfortunately, it had one significant flaw — the dog-bone shape basically encourages your dog to chew and lift it. Our larger testers, like Lucy and Cooper, overcame the suction cup in seconds, discarding the Gobble Stopper every time it was added to the bowl. The distance between the hump and the edges of the bowl was too wide and allowed even large snouted dogs to scarf down their food. On average, the DuraPet stainless steel dog bowl only added an extra 20 seconds to feeding time. The detachable prongs were a poor choice allowing water and other gunk to sneak inside the cavity underneath and rot. What is a slow-feed dog bowl? How do the slow-feed dog bowls achieve that? Without easy access to his food, your dog can only eat small amounts at a time, extending his mealtime. The exact arrangement of these raised sections varies from bowl to bowl. Some have spirals… Others have humps… All told, slow-feeder dog bowls come in hundreds of different patterns. While each slow-feed dog bowl may look different, they all are designed to slow any dog who wolfs down their food. With that said, some patterns are more suitable for some breeds of dog than others. Why do you need a slow-feed dog bowl? Let me explain… Which dogs need a slow-feed bowl? Are you worried about bloat? Well, you should be! In severe cases, bloat is deadly. A dog of any breed, age or size can suffer from bloat. Does your dog eat so fast that he throws up? When your dog eats too fast, he swallows larger pieces of kibble without chewing or takes in air with each mouthful. Stop that gulping with a slow feeder to save yourself from the hassle. Is your dog gassy after eating? Swallowed air from eating too quickly can also cause gassiness. Otherwise, that swallowed air is coming out the other end. Gas is a particular problem in breeds with pushed-in faces including Boxers, Bulldogs and Pugs. Does your dog steal from other dogs at mealtime? If you have multiple dogs, then this scenario may be all too familiar… One dog gulps down his food as quickly as possible, knowing that once he is finished, he can then steal food from his slower-eating friend. Give your food thief a slow-feed dog bowl. By doing so, you give your other dogs a head start in finishing their meal. Does your dog need an easy puzzle to solve? Many dog behavioral experts recommend using a puzzle feeder to provide much-needed stimulation to bored dogs. This was the problem my previous neighbor faced. You see, she was the proud owner of a Pekingese. It so happened that it was a Pekingese who could not figure out any puzzle feeder she was given. She knows the food goes in. She can smell it. She wants it. But she could never figure out how to reach it. It turned out that a slow-feed bowl was as much puzzle as she could handle — it honestly added 30 minutes to her feeding time. If your dog is a little slow and you want to offer them a challenge they can complete, a slow-feed bowl could be the answer you are looking for. Did you find yourself nodding at any of the above? Then, your doggy is a suitable candidate for a slow-feed dog bowl. If you are still on the fence, why not give one a go? Slow-feed bowls are an affordable product that offer a variety of advantages to your traditional dog bowl. During our research, the feedback on slow-feed bowls was overwhelmingly positive. When presented with a slow-feed bowl filled with food, the fussy canine simply chose to flip the bowl instead. With his meal scattered across the floor, the dog was free to eat his meal just as quickly as before — leaving the owner to clean up any pieces that he missed. Another issue came from a dog owner who claimed that her dog bit the slow-feed bowl, cracked it and ate the shards along with her food. The result was a rather expensive vet bill. We heard a similar story from a Bloodhound owner. I must stress that these experiences were uncommon. Almost everyone we spoke to had universal praise for slow-feed bowls. It is also worth mentioning that both these issues can be solved by choosing the correct slow-feed bowl for your dog. You can use this guide to find the perfect slow feeder for your dog. The only issue we see are chipped teeth. Like with any product you give your dog, you should monitor how he interacts. Our own experience with slow feed dog bowls was positive… We tested 35 slow feeders with a wide variety of dogs. Speaking of which… Our testing process At DogLab, we take our reviews seriously. We never recommend a product without thoroughly testing it first. No dogs were overfed or starved during our testing process. But rather, they seemed to enjoy the entire process. Who could blame them? Cuddles and food? Want to learn more about our testing process? Read on! Which slow-feeder bowls did we test? First, we had to decide which slow-feeder bowls we would test. It might surprise you to learn that there are hundreds of different slow-feed bowls on the market. It turns out that dogs eating too quickly is a pretty common problem. And, plenty of manufacturers want you to pay them to solve it. Slow feeders come in a ridiculous amount of shapes, sizes and colors. They come with prongs, wedges, valleys and mazes. They come in jumbo, extra small and every size in between. There are flat-feeder mats and feeders with high sides. They come in plastic, stainless steel or ceramic. The options are seemingly endless. So, the first thing we did was narrow down our selection. After researching every different slow feeder on the market, analyzing user reviews and interviewing experts, we narrowed the selection down to 35 bowls. Now this may seem like a lot, but it is worth mentioning that many of these slow feeders were variations offered by a single brand. You see, some brands offered slow feeders in different sizes, shapes and materials. By the end, we put 16 different brands to the test … AmazonBasics. The first dog bowl question we need to tackle is which material is best. Your dog bowl should be sturdy, tough, and spill-resistant. It should be easy to clean, but hard to chew up. As you can imagine, not all materials are up to the task. Plastic Dog Bowls Plastic dog bowls are lightweight and inexpensive, but those are the best things we have to say about them. There are many problems with using plastic bowls for your dog: Because they are so lightweight, plastic dog bowls will spill easily. If your dog is prone to chewing, small pieces of plastic are the last thing you want them ingesting. Lastly, plastic bowls are not easy to clean, and every little scratch is a hiding place for harmful bacteria. Unless you are backpacking with your dog and every ounce matters, leave the plastic bowls on the shelf and opt for something a little more durable. Ceramic Dog Bowls Ceramic bowls are heavy, making them nearly impossible for your dog to tip over. Technically though, you should wash any dog bowl daily, just like you would wash your own dishes. A clean dog bowl will help with that. Stainless Steel Dog Bowls Virtually unbreakable, easy to clean, and fairly lightweight — What more could you want in a dog bowl? Some stainless steel bowls also include a rubber ring or mat on the bottom, which will thwart your exuberant dog from sliding it all over the kitchen. Slow Feeder Dog Bowls I think this bowl was invented with the Labrador in mind — it is designed to keep dogs from eating too fast. Slow feeder dog bowls may reduce the risk of choking, bloat, and obesity , and because they can only grab a few pieces of kibble at a time, they may actually have time to enjoy their meal. If your dogs somewhat inhale their dinner, this might be a good option. Gravity Feeder Dog Bowls A gravity feeder might be the opposite of a slow feeder dog bowl, because it allows your dogs to eat as much as they want by constantly refilling the bowl. Electronic Dog Bowl Feeders Similar to gravity feeders, electronic automatic feeders offer the convenience of portion control. The following dog bowls are simple, sturdy, and easy to clean. This is one of the best dog water bowls out there. They hold the essentials of food and water for our dogs, helping us meet a few of their most basic needs. With a Labrador, this typically means medium to large dog bowls. And unfortunately, dog water bowls have been identified as one of the highest contaminated items in a household. Research shows that plastic and ceramic dog bowls, especially, can house bacteria faster and more readily, but even stainless steel housed it as well. And while more research is needed to find the best material for dog bowls, current research shows that no matter what they are made of, they may harbor harmful bacteria. So, look for dog bowls that are dishwasher safe or easy to clean. What one dog owner or pup prefers can be completely different for others. For example, finding the right Lab food bowl for a playful teenage dog can be tricky, when all they want to do is skid it around the room in a game of chase. Ultimately, the best solution is to get a bowl which they are unable to move. You can use a heavy ceramic bowl, but if your strong dog does manage to tip it then there is a possibility it could chip. The other option would be to buy traditional stainless steel or plastic dog bowls with a rubber base, which creates friction and prevents your dog from pushing it around the kitchen floor. Health Considerations When Looking At Dog Bowls Another example is that the type of dog bowl you choose and where it is placed can affect the health of your dog or vice versa. Feeding your dog at ground level affects them differently and has other benefits than feeding your dog with a raised feeder. Raised feeders are generally good for older and arthritic dogs. But having your dog standing with their head and body at an unnatural level may allow more air to be taken in during feeding, which is not good if they have bloat. Really, these are just a few examples. Best Ceramic Dog Bowls Ceramic dog bowls make great water bowls because they are fairly heavy. They come in a huge variety of designs from themed patterns to a traditional plain finish which would fit into any kitchen style. However, as we have mentioned, keep in mind that recent research has shown that ceramic dog bowls readily house household bacteria. The flat platform is covered in raised turrets, which your dog has to navigate in order to lift up his dinner. The downside of this model is that it is rather large and heavy. So, if your dog is only temporarily in need of some help at dinner time, you can still use the feeder when his joints are back to normal again. It helps to keep all of your dog feeding equipment in one place in the house. And it reduces the chance of your dog knocking their bowls over when eating or drinking. The elevated bowl is neither too expensive nor too high, making it perfect for both pet owner and their various-sized dogs. For convenient cleaning, you can put the bowls on the top rack of the dishwasher and hand wash the stand with mild detergent. Lastly, the elevated bowl comes in various sizes and colors and fits perfectly in the budget. Pros Finish with a Chic marble print Reduce neck strain at mealtime Made of durable Stainless-steel Perfect for small and medium-sized dogs Cons Some user finds black residue in bowls after washing them in the dishwasher. Construct with a protective wall, this elevated dog bowl will lower the effect of inadvertent knick of your excited labs and keep the spilled food and splashes of water within the feeder. More importantly, its supper and the lower reservoir will keep the spilled food clean while eliminating the need of cleaning the floor. Apart from that, it can be the best gift for your labs to improve his digestion and reduce strain on the back and joints. Comes in three different sizes, this solid elevated bowl fits perfectly for small to large breed including Chihuahua, Beagle, and Labrador. Pros Helps reduce neck and joint strain and improves digestion. Keep the wall and floor from mold, stains, and damage. Perfect for various sizes energetic and messy drinkers. Stylish and effective design. Its large lip makes it harder for the dog to get to the bowl. Comes in raised and furrowed designs, and a sluggish feeder dish makes it difficult for labs to finish the food within a couple of eats. This way your pooch will gets a chance to explore all their kibble, and eat at a safer speed to avoid causing indigestion, bloating, and heartburn. The ridges of this bowl will encourage your labs to take a sweet time eating to avoid the consequences of fast eating. In addition, the slow-feeder dog bowl is quite rugged and easy to clean in the dishwasher or by hand. Though the manufacturer state that this bowl holds 3 cups, many pet owners experience only 2 cups, and 3 cup cause overflowing. Pros Comes with a Fun bone-shaped ridge design. Has an Ergonomic opening for easier pickup. Easy to clean on the top rack of the dishwasher. Durable and stylish design. In addition, the bowl will promote healthy eating to prevent bloat, canine obesity, and regurgitation. The bowl also comes in plenty of sizes to allow you to fill it with the right amount of food requirements for your labs. However, this interactive bowl is a bit pricier than typical options outdoor. We recommend speaking directly with your breeder to get a better idea of their price range. With a name inspired by fighters in the ring, some people expect a Boxer to be aggressive or unfriendly. As is the case with many guard dog breeds , the owner must establish dominance early or their pup may try to take charge instead. For example, Boxer dogs need to be socialized and trained early to prevent aggression towards strangers or people they see as threats. It is advised to discipline gently but firmly and consistently. When it comes to their physical demands, Boxer puppies, as well as adults, are high-energy dogs that need some vigorous outdoor exercise every day. Lastly, Boxers are also jumpers, so you may need training to curb their instincts to leap up on you, your family, or your guests. The average lifespan for Boxer dogs ranges from 10 to 12 years. While this tends to be a healthy line, especially when you work with a trusted Boxer breeder, there are some special considerations. At Keystone Puppies, we only represent the best Boxer breeders. Our breeders not only offer a health guarantee but also provide exceptional homes for Boxer puppies that lead to healthy adult lives. As always, owners should keep their canine companions up-to-date on vaccinations and bring their pups in for regular checkups with their veterinarians. Caring for Boxer Coats The short, shiny coat is easy to maintain. Brush once a week to reduce shedding and to keep their coats bright. Before you buy a Boxer puppy, get familiar with their grooming routine. Their short coats are easy to maintain and look fantastic when you do. We recommend that owners generally brush their coats once per week to reduce shedding and to keep their coats attractive and healthy. In addition to that, cleaning out their ears once per week with a clean, damp cloth will reduce the risk of ear infections. We recommend you wipe out the wrinkles once a week to reduce the chance of skin infections. Meet Boxer Puppies for Sale.

I will examine the unique temperament, personality, and characteristics of these gorgeous girls, and to help you decide which gender is the right fit for you. Male vs Female German Shepherds For some people, aside from simple size, weight, and height considerations, there really is no important or measurable difference between a male and a female German shepherd. But for other people, even the subtle differences between a male and a female German shepherd can be sufficiently important to make one gender a preferable choice to the other in certain specific situations. Female German Shepherd size, height, and weight One of the most obvious general distinctions about the female GSD is that she is generally leaner, smaller, and shorter than her male counterpart. The female GSD stands 22 to 24 inches high paw to shoulder , a full two inches shorter than the male. And the female GSD will weigh between 50 and 70 pounds, which makes her about 15 pounds lighter than the adult male. Coat Color and Pattern The bi-color coat pattern is the most common and recognized color for the German shepherd dog of either gender. In most cases, you will find a black female German shepherd that displays one other secondary coat color, either cream, red, tan, or silver. In certain cases, you may see a single-color GSD in blue, gray, liver, sable, or white, although these are not breed standard colors and may render your dog at fault or deemed ineligible certainly in the case of the white coat color for the show ring. There is no gender-related differentiation in overall coat color or pattern that is seen in the male versus female German shepherd. Female German Shepherd Personality The German shepherd female temperament can also show marked differences in behavior and personality that can be related back to her gender. Whether these differences are present and how apparent they may be will vary depending on the traits of the specific parent dogs, which is why it is important to be able to meet and get to know each parent dog as you are selecting between male and female German shepherd puppies. More likely to bond equally with more than one family member aside from the principle person responsible for training and meals. May be easier to train and more sensitive to commands and cues. Possibly a better pick for service dog or therapy dog work. Good for rally, agility, and obedience training due to lighter weight, smaller size, and more graceful body structure. Less apt to become territorial in the presence of strangers. Female German Shepherd Training The GSD is currently the second most popular family pet dog in America, and this is for good reason, but ongoing regular socialization and puppy training is a huge reason why! This is one of the most intelligent of all dog breeds! Your German shepherd has an incredibly strong work ethic with tremendous drive and focus while on the job. They will also bond strongly with the entire family. Positive training methods focus on delivering praise, playtime, pets, and treats in response to well-learned tasks and commands. German shepherds of either gender are hands-down one of the most popular police and K-9 dogs in the world. Some of these are German shepherd mix dogs while others are purebred GSDs. Socialization Everyone in the family should play a part in feeding and training your new pup. This will go a long way towards developing her tendency to bond closely with each family member. Make sure that she meets lots of strangers outdoors and at home. The window for socialization closes around 16 weeks old, so your first few weeks together are going to be busy. While a female German shepherd is lighter and shorter, she will still be strong from the get-go! Choosing the right collar and lead system will help you. Female German shepherds will need plenty of early socialization with young children in the family and with other family pets. Young children in particular will need to be supervised at all times in interactions with your female GSD puppy! Children may be unintentionally rougher with a puppy that can be easily tolerated and this can lead to preventable incidents. These issues include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cardiac issues, eye issues, autoimmune thyroiditis, and degenerative myelopathy. Only hip and elbow dysplasia are currently required tests for reputable breeders, with the remainder being optional recommended health tests. German shepherds can sometimes contract a blood disease called hemophilia A. Female German shepherd dogs are usually carriers and, unlike males with the genes for the condition, will not show symptoms. There is a health test to detect this disease, which is present from birth. Idiopathic Epilepsy Interestingly, this condition is less likely to impact female German shepherd dogs than males. The reason is not yet known, although researchers suspect there may be several genes polygenetic involved. German Shepherd Spaying Having an un neutered female dog is inconvenient, but only for a few weeks of the year. Spaying is a commonly carried out procedure, but it does come with some risks. Certain health conditions are more common in girls that are spayed before 12 months old. This is because spaying gets rid of some important hormones. Urinary incontinence, mammary cancer and joint disorders are all more likely is your girl is neutered before a year old. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Female German Shepherds typically differ from males in the following physical ways: Weight: 15 pounds lighter than males Features: female German Shepherds generally have narrower heads and slimmer features than males. Females typically have lighter pigment colors, too. Behaviorally, their differences when compared to males can be generalized as such: The protective instincts female GSD's have for children and other family members kick in a bit sooner than those of the male dogs. Females are also emotionally softer than the males, which means they take harsh verbal correction more seriously than males do and thus are a bit more likely to comply to commands. This 'softness' in females is a big reason why it's common to hear dog owners, breeders, and trainers generalize that "female dogs are easier for first time dog owners.

The Reasoning Behind the Puppy Food New dog owners have several choices to make when it comes to food. It can be overwhelming, but there are a few simple things to keep in mind for a balanced diet. Your main goal is a healthy, happy dog! Adult dogs and puppies have different nutritional needs. Puppy food is specifically designed for growing pups. As they grow, they are burning more calories. This means that they need more calories per pound of body weight to sustain their developing bodies. Bernedoodle puppies need more fatty acids and high protein diets. These puppies complete a majority of their growth within two or three years. In these first few years, they will need higher amounts of protein calories. Veterinarians will say that it is, however, not toxic for your puppy to eat adult dog food. They may suggest that you do your best to stick to these separate kinds of dog food for optimal health. This type of food is typically referred to as adult maintenance for day-to-day living. It should be clearly labeled on the packages. Once they have reached their adult weight, they can maintain the health benefits from their simpler diet. The transition from puppy food to adult dog food should be seamless. Bernedoodle dogs are laid back and not picky! Most of the time, they will eat what is put in front of them. Now that we have covered the difference between the types of dog food, we will get right to specific amounts for Bernedoodle puppies. Our Penny had a very sensitive stomach as a puppy, and we have stuck with this puppy food and been very happy with the choice. She seems to be happy and thriving on it. The daily amount of puppy food depends on weeks of age and how much they weigh. It will also depend on how much exercise they receive. I will break that down specifically. But, it is important to keep in mind that their food intake will increase as they grow. At around six months of age, Bernedoodle puppies can eat twice a day. This schedule may continue for adult Bernedoodles. They are growing very quickly. Setting your puppy up with proper nutrients will benefit growth, brain health and a long lifespan. It is helpful to stick to designated eating times for your puppy. Do not forget that It is a good choice to check the directions of the healthy dog food you purchase. On the back of each package, there should be a suggested serving size. As always, contact your veterinarian if you are concerned about how your Bernedoodle is developing. Interestingly enough, adult Bernedoodle dogs tend to only eat one serving a day. They can finish their larger amount of food in one sitting. When they reach an even older age it may be difficult for them to finish this serving in one feeding. It is helpful to spread these servings out for older dogs while it gets harder to finish a meal. At this point you will be in tune to what your Bernedoodle dog needs. Bernedoodles are known for their love of food! It is easy to over-feed your puppy. A general rule is to check their ribs. You should be able to feel the ribs easily but not be able to see them at a glance. This is a great way to check on your Bernedoodle dogs and their weight gain. It can be tempting to feed your pup food from the table. This seems innocent but can create poor eating habits down the road. It can also disrupt their digestive systems. You have worked hard to create a healthy diet and want to keep it that way. If a Bernedoodle puppy is hungry, they will eat from their designated spot and will not need anything extra. Do not forget that although the feeding schedule is important, we cannot forget about giving our dogs plenty of exercise! Long walks will encourage a healthy life for your Bernedoodle and for you. Overall health includes diet and exercise. This is another reason why Bernedoodle puppies are a wonderful family dog. They have plenty of energy to keep up with toddlers. Frequency Of Feeding Bernedoodle puppies have different nutritional requirements compared to adult dogs. Puppies need more frequent meals as their stomachs are smaller, and they require regular energy to fuel their growth. Generally, Bernedoodle puppies that are two to six months of age typically eat three times a day. It is essential to maintain a consistent feeding schedule when raising a Bernedoodle puppy. Choosing The Right Type Of Food When it comes to choosing the right type of food for your Bernedoodle puppy, there are several factors to consider. First and foremost, you will want to make sure that the food you select is appropriate for their size and nutritional needs. Soaking Kibble For Easier Digestion One of the recommended feeding guidelines for Bernedoodle puppies is soaking their kibble in raw milk. Soaking kibble can make it easier for them to digest and absorb nutrients from their food. When puppies eat dry kibble, they tend to swallow large pieces whole, which can lead to digestive issues such as bloating and constipation. For example, by the time Bernedoodles are weeks old, they will be eating one raw meal per day and two kibble meals per day soaked in raw milk. Raw milk contains probiotics that can help promote healthy gut flora and improve overall digestion. It is also high in protein, calcium, vitamin D and other essential vitamins and minerals that support growth development at this stage of life. Factors To Consider When Feeding A Bernedoodle Puppy When feeding a Bernedoodle puppy, age, weight, activity level, and nutritional requirements should all be taken into account to ensure that they are getting the proper amount of food for their growth and development. Age As your Bernedoodle puppy grows and develops, their age plays a crucial role in determining the appropriate feeding regimen. Each stage of growth has specific nutritional requirements to ensure healthy development and weight maintenance. For example, at eight weeks to 12 weeks old, these fluffy pups need about one cup of food three times a day to fuel their rapid growth. Around four months of age, it is important for owners to establish a regular feeding schedule with meals served at consistent times each day. This helps develop good eating habits and prevents potential gastrointestinal issues caused by erratic meal timings. Weight One of the most important factors to consider when determining how much to feed your Bernedoodle puppy is their weight. Activity Level The activity level of a Bernedoodle puppy plays a significant role in determining the appropriate amount and type of food they require. Puppies with higher energy levels will burn more calories throughout the day, thus needing increased caloric intake to support their growth and development. A common rule for puppies is providing 5 minutes of exercise per month of age, times per day; this can help you estimate how much food your pooch needs. Additionally, consulting with your veterinarian about tailoring meal portions can further aid in promoting healthy weight gain and avoiding overfeeding issues. These adorable pups require high-quality, animal-based protein in their diets for optimal growth and development. Additionally, Bernedoodle puppies need higher amounts of calories than adult dogs due to their growth stage. As they grow older, the caloric requirement will decrease gradually before reaching adulthood at around two or three years old. It is recommended to weigh your Bernedoodle at least once a month, preferably more frequently during their growth stage. Moreover, regular weigh-ins can also prevent obesity, which is a common problem among dogs. Overfeeding or underfeeding can lead to various health issues such as joint problems, heart disease, and diabetes. Here are some signs of overfeeding or underfeeding your Bernedoodle puppy: Weight gain or loss: Sudden and drastic weight changes can indicate an imbalance in their diet. Ensure that you keep track of their weight regularly. Low energy levels: Overfeeding can lead to lethargy and low energy levels, while underfeeding can make them restless. Digestive issues: Overfeeding may cause digestive problems such as diarrhea, vomiting, or constipation. Behavioural changes: Overfed puppies may show lack of interest in activities, become irritable or overly aggressive, while underfed puppies tend to become anxious and overly active. Dull coat: Both overfed and underfed puppies may have a dull-looking coat due to poor nutrition. Increased thirst and urination: Overfeeding can lead to excessive water intake resulting in frequent peeing while underfeeding can cause the opposite effect where they drink less water than required. Reduced appetite: Underfed puppies often lose interest in food altogether leading them with a reduced appetite. As a general rule of thumb, the amount of exercise should be limited to 5 minutes per month of age until they reach maturity. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, which can adversely affect their health and cause other problems down the line. Also, be sure to measure out the exact portion sizes recommended for each meal as free-feeding or guessing can lead to overconsumption. Importance Of High-Quality Ingredients Choosing the right type of food for your Bernedoodle puppy is crucial, and one of the most important factors in ensuring their health and wellbeing is selecting high-quality ingredients. High-quality dog food should provide your pup with a balanced diet that includes all the necessary nutritional requirements, such as protein, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and carbohydrates. When choosing a dog food brand for Bernedoodles puppies or dogs, look out for products that use real meat such as chicken or lamb rather than by-products. Additionally, avoid foods that contain artificial preservatives and fillers like corn gluten meal or wheat flour. This dog food brand also has wholesome grains like brown rice and barley which are easy to digest sources of complex carbohydrates; it maintains energy levels throughout long playtime sessions spent outdoor exercising while supporting digestive health thanks to fiber content from fruits and vegetables plus probiotic strains supplements found within each kibble bite-sized piece they consume. We shoot for always having a little bit of food left over and we let them have access to food for about minutes but this can be adjusted based on your schedule. We only do this for the breakfast. We will begin adding about tablespoons of different types of lightly cooked meats can go raw as well and sardines to the above topper along with a little bit of cut up or shredded carrots, blueberries and can add other dog friendly fruits and veggies but make sure you check before using. We would also add dog-based salmon oil according to the instructions about a tsp. Often in the morning we would do sweet potato, yogurt, and a meat and dinner some of the other ingredients. Lunch we keep plain. Be sure you are washing your food and water bowls once per day with hot soapy water. Lastly we recommend starting with TLC adult all life stages dog food for large growing breeds like bernedoodles and even for the puppies. Put the food in the pen and leave it for approximately 15 to 20 minutes and then take it up again. Pay attention to see if your puppy does it and just take note that they are eating regularly twice a day. Once you dog is potty trained and if it is not a glutton, you may leave food out for longer periods of time if you prefer. Nutrition The idea that canine diets should be grain free may have come about due to some allergy concerns as well as the realization that dogs are carnivores and should be eating a diet with a substantial amount of meat. Of course, many manufacturers were quick to promote this new fad diet and eager to capitalize on sincerely concerned pet owners. The problem is that there have been no significant studies conducted on these grain free diet feeding plans for dogs. In fact, many veterinarians and even the FDA are now realizing that grain free dog food is actually causing more harm than good. The concern is that when grains are taken out of the food, another filler must be added to take the place of these grains. These fillers are usually high in carbohydrates like peas and lentils, which have been linked to Dilated cardiomyopathy DCM , diabetes, and other serious health issues in dogs. When you are looking for dog food be sure that you do your due diligence and check ingredients, do your research. Malnutrition, or failing to supply any nutrients, can result in serious health complications for a Bernedoodle. Protect your pup with a varied, high-quality diet rich in protein, grains, vitamins, and minerals. Each has its own set of pros and cons. Wet dog food can ease the transition for a weaning puppy, but the prolonged feeding of wet foods particularly canned versions can lead to digestive problems. Dogs who consume a diet primarily of wet foods also tend to have more dental problems, such as plaque buildup and tooth decay. While you can counteract this effect by offering whole bones to your dog, it may not be sufficient in helping them avoid dental issues. Kibble dry dog food is generally the preferred feeding method for dogs, particularly among large dog breed owners. It is often because kibble tends to be less expensive per pound than other dog foods. Kibble also typically lasts longer than raw or cooked food, so there is less potential for waste. The hardness of kibble can also protect a dog from dental issues, as it helps to wear away plaque, the leading cause of tooth decay. If you choose this feeding method for your Bernedoodle, take some time to research and compare the various brands. Pay special attention to major recalls. Opt for a trusted and reputable brand. Consider using dog brand comparison sites for an in-depth look at the ingredients. Avoid by-products and focus, instead, on kibbles that contain mostly whole-food ingredients. Cooked and raw dog food diets have emerged as a trend over the past few years. These diets typically involve the preparation of human foods like liver, eggs, cottage cheese, sweet potatoes, chicken, and beef cuts. However, there are commercial selections available for purchase. The potentially large size of a Bernedoodle can make raw and cooked food diets cost-prohibitive for some owners. Even those that can afford it should talk to their vet. Should it be administered incorrectly, a raw or cooked diet can lead to serious nutrient deficiencies. This can lead to long-term and even life-threatening health problems for your Bernedoodle. Regardless of the age or size of your Bernedoodle, a feeding schedule should be used to prevent overeating and obesity. The only exception is when the pup is weaning during its first three months. Grazing can be permitted during this stage to help them adjust to regular dog food. When Bernedoodle puppies reach four months of age, owners should move to a regular feeding schedule. The pup should be fed at the same time each day, three times daily. At around six months of age, the growth of a Bernedoodle begins to slow, and obesity becomes more of a risk. To minimize it, Bernedoodle puppies should be transitioned to twice-daily feedings once they reach six months of age. Older senior dogs may sometimes need to return to grazing, as they may struggle to eat their entire serving in one sitting. Just be sure to watch your dog for excessive weight gain. Bernedoodles tend to be voracious eaters, so they can quickly become overweight when allowed to graze. Puppies can be especially prone to bone problems if permitted to gain weight too quickly, so watch them closely for any signs of excessive eating. Also, be sure to feed your Bernedoodle the right amount of food. Larger Bernedoodle dogs will need more. However, the amount of dog food should not be determined through charts alone. They are only guidelines. Health, age, exercise and activity levels, and sub-breed can alter the amount of food a Bernedoodle needs — sometimes significantly. Healthy Bernedoodle pups can eat as much as three times the food as an adult dog of the same weight. As such, Bernedoodle owners should start at the minimum amount of food and then monitor the dog for weight loss and weight gain. An observation journal can help you note small changes over time while also allowing you to keep track of how much your Bernedoodle is eating. Dogs getting the appropriate amount of food usually have visible ribs and a tucked tummy. This is when viewed from the side. When viewed from above, they should have a visible waist. If your dog continues to appear underweight, despite increases in food intake. You may need to schedule a trip to the vet to rule out parasites or underlying health conditions. Should you start noticing a rounded stomach, a waist disappears when viewing your dog from the side. Reduce their food amount slightly until their shape returns. You can also take your Bernedoodle out for more exercise to reduce their weight. Bernedoodle Treats — Yes, No, or Sometimes? Treats are often used to train young Bernedoodles. Of course, senior dogs love treats, too! Yet, because Bernedoodles can be prone to overeating, avoiding excessive treat giving with this breed is important. Bernedoodles rarely mind. Give only limited amounts of commercial dog and protein-dense treats to minimize the risk of obesity in your Bernedoodle. Bones with marrow should only be given on occasion. Keeping Your Bernedoodle Healthy Diet is not the only health consideration that Bernedoodles owners need to make, as it is not the only pillar to good health. Depending on their age or specific health needs, your dog may also need additional vitamins or supplements; your vet can advise you further. Such as malnutrition, tooth decay, excessive weight gain, sluggishness, unusual shedding, or other alarming symptoms. They can differ even more the original litter is bred with other Poodles or Bernese Mountain Dogs. Additionally, the Bernedoodle is a newer breed so people are still learning about them with each generation. They usually have curly or at least wavy coats that tend to shed less and cause fewer problems for allergy sufferers. They do not like to be left alone and can develop separation anxiety. Good training can help to prevent this, however, and this quality makes them wonderful canine friends anyway. Feeding Your Bernedoodle Puppy Thorough knowledge of puppy feeding can help deter bad behavior and potential health issues down the road as your puppy blossoms into an adult. Your puppy needs a well-balanced diet just like a human baby. It should contain a combination of proteins from both plant and meat sources, as well as some grains. Also, puppy food and adult dog food are not the same. Puppies require more nutrients and more calories than adult dogs because they are growing so quickly. You can choose between dry food, canned food, cooked food, or raw food. Dry and canned foods are designed to provide all of the nutrients that your puppy needs to grow and be healthy. There are also size-specific food types you can choose from that contain different nutrient amounts or smaller kibble. As puppies transition from nursing to puppy food, it may be easier to feed them a mixture of wet and dry food. This will help them adjust to eating just kibble as they get older. Bernedoodle puppies tend to overeat, so they must be kept on a feeding schedule. Puppies younger than four months can be allowed to graze as needed as they transition from nursing to puppy food. At four months old, Bernedoodle puppies should be fed three times per day, at the same times each day. At six months old, you should transition your Bernedoodle puppy to feedings twice per day instead of three times. Be sure to feed your Bernedoodle puppy early enough in the evening that he has time to digest and go potty or he may have accidents overnight. The amount of food you feed your Bernedoodle puppy can vary greatly based on the size of poodle the Bernese was bred with toy, mini, or standard. Smaller Bernedoodle puppies, those that were bred from toy or miniature poodles, will require much less food than the larger Bernedoodle puppies. Keep an eye on the shape of your puppy. You should be able to see his ribs slightly and his tummy should tuck upward. You should not be able to see his hips, however. Begin feeding your Bernedoodle puppy the smallest amount for their weight, but if he looks underweight, increase that amount gradually. If he looks overweight, decrease his food intake. The first step to determine how much to feed your puppy is to figure out approximately what your puppy will weigh once he is an adult. The following chart show approximately how much to feed your puppy based on weight and age range: Bernedoodle Puppy Feeding Chart 6 weeks to 3 months 4 — 5 months. This is important for all dogs but especially for a growing puppy. Protein is what essentially determines the quality of dog food. When you read the label, you will see one or more of the following protein types: Meat protein. As the name implies, this type of protein comes from other animals. It is usually made up of muscle or organ meat and is the closest protein to human quality. It is superior to other types of protein for dogs. Animal by-products. This protein type is made up of the parts of the animal that are not included in meat protein. It can be made of hair, hoofs, lips, and even eyelashes. Vegetable and grain proteins. These are mostly soy- or corn-based. The goal is to provide a diet with more animal protein than veggie protein, which you can do by choosing a food with at least two animal sources of protein listed within the first five ingredients on the bag. Carbohydrates Just like humans, Bernedoodle puppies get energy and dietary fiber from carbs. Many different types of carbs can be found within puppy food. High-quality carbs include rice, barley, and oats, while lower-quality carbs include corn or wheat. Fats and Preservatives Of all the ingredients in puppy food, fats are the most expensive. Because they are harder to extract and more challenging to preserve. The best usable fats for puppies are those from chicken, sunflower, or canola oil. Other fats you might see include fish oil and lactose-free dairy fats. Remember that vitamins are nothing more than organic additives that help give the puppy anything it needs that it is not getting from its food. If the food is of high quality, then there should not be a need for a significant amount of calories coming from vitamins. That said, some vitamins should be included within the food to allow your Bernedoodle puppy to digest it properly. There are two main types of vitamins: Fat-Soluble. Examples include A, D, E, and K, and these types of vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Water Soluble. Examples include B and C. You will find plenty of foods with long lists of added vitamins. This might look impressive, but, again, if the food is of high quality, then less is more when it comes to vitamin additives. Consider the Ease of Obtaining Puppy Food Another factor to consider is how easily you can get a food. When it comes to ease of access, you will find three main options: Brands you can find anywhere. These are the most popular brands you have likely heard of, and they can be found at just about any grocery store, big-box store, and even some drug stores. These are also generally the least expensive options. However, they often choose meat from 4-D categories, which means the animals that make up the protein are dead, dying, or diseased. It is also common for the fats used in these brands to be of lower quality and not as easily digestible, which might require your Bernedoodle puppy to eat more to get the nutrients they need. Premium brands. Historically, they were found in specialty pet stores and animal hospitals. They generally use a higher grade of meat and higher quality fats, which means that puppies generally need less of these foods than those that are more commercially available. Holistic foods. These are only found in specialty pet stores or online. These are the cream of the crop and generally have human-grade meats and highly digestible fats. Even the grain carb mix will be made from high-quality foods. You will find many of these to be free from hormones and steroids. Of course, this quality comes with a high price, and they can be harder to find. Once again, the high quality means less food is needed compared to lower-priced options. Balancing Cost and Quality Not everyone can effort to pay for holistic food. The key is to find the best quality you can for the price you can afford. You do not need to spend that much money to keep your puppy in good health. Adult Bernedoodle Nutrition As your Bernedoodle ages, it no longer needs the extra calories for growth. Most dogs will become less active once they leave the puppy stage between 18 months and two years, which further reduces their need for calories. The type of Bernedoodle affects its total expected weight: Standard Bernedoodles get to pounds Miniature Bernedoodles get to pounds Tiny Bernedoodles get to 10 — 24 pounds If you are not sure how much your particular dog is likely to end up weighing, you can talk to your vet. Smaller Bernedoodles might be at their adult weight by six or seven months old, while standard Bernedoodles often grow well beyond 12 months of age. Once again, look at the package for its breakdown of nutrients. The two main options for adult dogs are adult maintenance all-stages. Adult maintenance is generally the better choice for dogs that are overweight or not as active, while all-stage food contains extra nutrients for more active dogs. Senior Bernedoodle Nutrition As your Bernedoodle becomes a senior dog, its nutritional requirements will change. Many senior dogs deal with a wealth of health issues , including obesity, arthritis, and cognitive issues. Meanwhile, they can also suffer from appetite loss. The opposite is actually true. A healthy senior Bernedoodle will need more protein to fuel their muscle. As dogs age, they begin to lose muscle mass — sometimes so much that they cannot move around with assistance. Find the Right Calorie Balance Younger senior Bernedoodles are often overweight, but as they get older, they tend to become underweight. You will need to know the calorie content of the food you are feeding and adjust it accordingly if your dog gains or loses weight when you do not want them to. Because many of the elements that you want a lot of — or none of — vary widely or are not listed at all on regular senior dog food. For example, a dog with heart or kidney disease should have low sodium food, but the amount of sodium on the most popular senior dog food brands ranges from 33 to mg per kcal. Likewise, a dog with kidney disease would need a diet that is low in phosphorous, but no dog food label notes how much phosphorous is in a diet. If your senior Bernedoodle develops a health condition that requires strict control over specific elements of their diet, a prescription diet might be the only place to achieve that goal. You Will Need to Find a Food That Your Dog Likes When it comes to feeding younger Bernedoodles, unless your dog is particularly picky, you can likely feed them whatever is healthiest, and they will be happy to eat it. The same cannot be said for senior dogs, who often do not have a healthy appetite. In addition to loss of appetite, senior Bernedoodles might have dental issues that make it hard to chew their food, or digestive issues that make them uncomfortable after eating certain food types. At this stage, you might choose canned or soft food that they enjoy eating more. You can also help your dog eat more easily by feeding them on a raised platform or while they are lying down so that they do not have to bend down. Bernedoodle Treats When your Bernedoodle is still a puppy, you will need treats for training. You will need to experiment to determine what this is for your puppy. One of the most popular options is freeze-dried liver. Your dog might prefer small pieces of chicken or other proteins. For training, treats should be very small so that your dog can quickly eat them and move on to the next part of the training. If you are training for an extended period and offering a significant number of treats, then you should reduce the amount of kibble you give your puppy to balance the calories they received via treats. As your dog grows, you might still want to treat them from time to time, but you will not be offering them as many treats as you did when they were training. Feeding Schedules for Bernedoodles The amount of food you feed your Bernedoodle will depend on the food you choose for them. Look at the bag to see the recommended number of cups. If you have a puppy, there will be a chart with weeks or months of age along with weight. Find where your puppy fits and feed based on that amount. Note that these are just starting places. Your food might suggest 3 cups of food, but if you find that your puppy is constantly hungry and not gaining weight as quickly as they should, then they might need more. Feeding Frequency Until six months of age, puppies should eat three times per day. After they reach this mark, feeding them twice per day is recommended for the rest of their life. However, if you cannot feed your puppy three times per day, trust that your puppy will adapt. The number of times you feed them is not nearly as important as feeding them the correct amount. If your lifestyle allows for it, feed your puppy or dog at the same time every day. This helps comfort the pup because it will learn that food is coming. It also helps keep their digestion regular and makes it easier for you to notice if your dog is eating more or less than they usually do. If their appetite varies slightly from day to day, there is likely nothing wrong. However, if your Bernedoodle suddenly loses its appetite or changes its diet preferences for several weeks, it is time to call the vet. Post navigation.

In order for this to be the best experience for you and your Doodle, the most important thing to remember is: Be patient! If it is frustrating for you at any time throughout the grooming process, take a break and come back later. We always want our Doodles to relate grooming with positivity! Well, short answer, I groom my dogs every 8 — 10 weeks. There are so many variables to the grooming question that I hate to boil it down to one sentence. First, we should ask ourselves a few questions: 1. How much time does he spend outdoors with the potential to get dirty? What sort of coat does your dog have? Different Coat Types Require Different Labradoodle Grooming Schedules I have dogs with different coat types, and they have different grooming schedules. My two older dogs both have a wool type coat. It is very curly, a little wiry, and not the easiest to brush. It is most like a poodle coat. These two get the most regular grooming appointments, and I keep them pretty short. With this type of cut and frequency I do not need to brush them out at all between grooms. I usually wait more time between grooms on this coat. I love the fluffy look when it grows out. Often the ears and collar area need regular brushing to prevent matting. If your doodle does not go out and get dirty, then cleaning is not an issue, and you could keep a longer coat with or without regular visits to the groomer. If a mat develops next to their skin it is painful for the dog, and you will need to have your Labradoodle shaved down to eliminate. Artistic Grooming Techniques And of course, there are all sorts of artistic grooming techniques. I often see the ears and tail left longer than the rest of the body. And the Teddy Bear- is always cute! Clearing the ear hair will help prevent ear infections as well as ear odor. If your groomer does not pluck ear hair, consider this task on your own or stop by your vet a few times a year to have them take care of the problem. Occasionally, a nice bath helps in between grooms too! This does mean however, that your dog requires regular clipping to keep the coat trimmed and free of knots and matting. This is important for the dog also, as their coats can get very heavy and hot and matted coats make them very uncomfortable. It will really depend on the length you want to keep your Labradoodles coat as to how much grooming you will have to do. What do I need? Hold the skin taught to protect from any discomfort, especially where you come across a knot, or matts. Like in human hair, work knots out gently, or cut through them with scissors or a matt breaker. Knots are quite common around the ears, jaw, and collar as well as behind the tops of their legs. If they wear a harness regularly, you may find matting from this too. Trim around their eyes and across the bridge of their nose between their eyes regularly — you can do this with blunt scissors, or use a little tool like the Wahl Pocket Pro, which is a little battery operated trimmer. Over bathing can reduce the oils and damage the coat. I usually bathe my dogs every weeks. It is important to use a good quality pet shampoo — dogs have a different PH in their skin to humans, so regular shampoos is not suitable for use on your pets. Fido products are expensive, but I find them very good and this is what I use on the puppies, and my own dogs. Some vets will advocate regular plucking, others may suggest trimming the hair, but regardless, keeping the hair minimal, and the ears clean, with the use of an ear cleanser or a drying agent will reduce the risk of problems. You pop the solution into each ear and massage it for seconds and then wipe it out with a tissue — never use ear buds! Check with your vet for tips on hair removal and which solution to use. Your dogs nails should be done each time they get their coat trimmed and this is a service most dog groomers usually do as part of their clip. If you choose to do this, be sure to get your groomer, or your vet to show you how to trim the nails correctly. Grooming How frequently you choose to get your dog clipped will depend on lifestyle, how long you want their coat to be and, your regular maintenance regimes. Besides you want to enjoy that adorable puppy shagginess for a little while! The Puppy Trim Trim between their eyes so they can see Fringe should be cut so there is an inverted"V"above the nose. If the fringe is thick, it can be neatened with thinning scissors. Trim the ear length back to about 1 cm following the shape of the ear leather. Neaten the face, especially if the beard is long. The Full Clip Ears Trim the ears, following the edge of the ear leather. To gauge the length — pull forward to the nose. The length of the ear should be just short of the nose. Taper the tip of the ear. Hair on the outside of the ear should be layered on the to about 3cm, and the tip of the ear tapered. Trim back any thickness behind the ear. The underside of the ear should be shaved or cut very short underneath to allow good air flow. Trim hair inside the ear canal. Top of the head The top of the head should be natural, and cut long enough that it parts naturally by itself. To trim, pull the hair forward and up and trim to around cm. You want to be able to see the dogs eyes easily. Leave the eyelashes long — it helps to keep hair out of their eyes. Eyes Below the eye at the muzzle, trim the top of the muzzle short at an angle just under the eyes so they can see easily. This makes it easier to clean around the eyes also. Muzzle The beard and moustache should be layered and trimmed into a circular shape, rather than blunt - aim for around cm in length. Body the body can be trimmed to whatever length suits the lifestyle. Tail should be evened up. If the body is left long, the tummy can be trimmed shorter, or even shaved in summer to keep the dog cool. Trim the hair between the pads, so the pads touch the ground. Trim the nails. Taper the hind quarters to the tail gradually. Brush and trim the tail to a natural length, and trim underneath. Private Parts Shave or trim close the dogs private area to keep clean and free from matting and any dags. While the adult coat is establishing, you will need to brush multiple times a week, and I find this the best time to give your pet his first trim. It will be difficult to keep up with the matting in the longer coat, but with a trim, it is very manageable, and the beauty of the adult coat is better realized. Once your dog gets to 12 to 14 months, the adult coat will be fully established, and this is the coat you can expect to work with for your dog's adult life. I find that the picture to the right will help to clarify the instructions you will need to convey for your dog's face. It is best to print this picture and take it with you to the groomer. A three-fourths inch blade don't go shorter than one-half inch will keep your dog's coat nice and full but give a smooth consistent length all over. If you like your dogs coat longer, your groomer should have a guard they can use to achieve this. The legs are typically just a little longer than the rest of the coat if you trim the coat to three-fourths inch. FEET: The feet will need a "slipper" cut to achieve the floppy, full leg look. The leg will look like a column. TAIL: The tail needs to be de-matted and trimmed. It is also important to have the hair removed, either trimmed or pulled, inside the dog's ears. Click the grooming picture for an enlarged, printable version and take it with you to your groomer!

boxer puppies idaho - Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. A boxer can do it all! Customer The farm is very nice, the puppies and kennels were very clean. We arrived at an Amish farm and all the puppies were playing in the yard. We had the opportunity to play with all of them for about an hour before making our choice. Payment was easy and the breeders are very helpful and have us extra food and tips. The puppies are a bit more expensive than other places but it's well worth the price to know the puppies are growing up happy on a nice big clean farm. Jeff Simonson Customer The best puppy buying experience! Extremely responsive and transparent. We got our boxer puppy at 15 weeks, and he was pretty much potty trained. Loves sleeping in his crate. Smart as ever. Obsessed with other dogs but shy of people. He is the perfect addition to our family. Thank you harvest view for the love of our lives. Kimberly R.
