A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. But why make socialization difficult when you can facilitate it early in their lives? Visiting friends and family is one way to go about it. You can also spot a dog park and carry him there. The same applies to other position commands. Since your Retriever can tell words apart, he can go into different positions based on the words you say. The anchoring process involves saying something or making a specific sound while your dog is busy holding a certain position or acting a certain way. Now is the time to start saying the words you have associated with his actions in order to inspire said actions. Where you previously whistled when your Retriever ran towards you, now you must whistle so he begins his run. This is the start of his Golden Retriever recall training. It is possible that your Retriever does not respond to the commands. There will be back and forth where you will keep saying words while the dog organically acts. After a few attempts at reinforcing the commands, you can test the triggers again. So avoid forcing your dog to be perfect on the first few attempts. This helps him be social and get close to them. He must learn to be safe and social around strangers too. After all, he has to go on walks without picking fights with people, no matter how friendly Golden Retrievers are known to be. Slowly exposing him to crowds can improve his social tolerance. The less quick he is to bark at strangers, the kinder they will be to him. This triggers a positive feedback loop where he is adored for being social, which encourages him to be more social. Not all goldens will grow to the same size and at the same rate. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. German Shepherds are super intelligent and have a powerful sense of smell. And if you want to find your dog, you have to play to his strengths, meaning you have to rely on this sense of smell. At the same time, you may want to increase the odds of encountering your dog. To find a lost German Shepherd, you need to set an anchor point where you place an item with a familiar scent, such as your clothing or a toy. Get help to search the area. While the above covers what you need to do on a broader level, there are three distinct methods of raising the odds in your favor when looking for a lost dog. These are covered below in detail. The understanding is simply that if they wait long enough, the group will return to the area where the missing individual is anchored and find them. The same principle can work with a dog. The idea is to make sure you anchor inaccessible spots throughout the park, neighborhood, or gated community and call for your dog. You may be tempted to move quickly, covering the entire area. If your German Shepherd runs towards a specific spot and you move on to the next, it will only draw out the process further. Give each area a solid five minutes. Stand firmly in place and shout for him. There can be some delay between you calling out and the dog finding you. Five minutes provide that buffering time. If you hear barking, continue to call out without moving. Soon, your doggo will join you. If you only move a few steps ahead, you might be wasting the next few minutes. This allows you to cover more distance with fewer repetitions. You must operate under the assumption that he has gone on a self-guided walk and slowly taken the same route you usually take your dog. The idea here is that you might cross paths with him if you walk along the same way. This works well towards the front end of the route but starts tapering its effectiveness towards the end. Particles that would normally be absorbed by the small intestine instead pass on into the large intestine, pulling water along with them and creating a larger volume of poop. Small intestine diarrhea tends to be less frequent, with no urgency and usually no visible blood. Small intestine diarrhea is more likely to be accompanied by vomiting, nutrient deficiencies, and weight loss. If blood is present, it is dark and tarry because it has been digested, unlike the fresh blood found in large intestine diarrhea. You may think of diarrhea as watery puddles, but completely liquid poop is really just one end of the scale. Diarrhea can refer to a range of consistencies, from moist but distinct piles to shapeless blobs to puddles. Dog Poop Color Chart Brown. Yellow or gray dog poop can point to serious health issues, such as diseases of the liver, pancreas, or gallbladder. Or your dog might have eaten something that contained green food coloring. Poop with a shiny or oily-looking surface may contain excess mucus, which can be caused by inflammation of the large intestine colitis. Pale, clay-colored. Pale or clay-colored dog feces may also indicate problems with the digestion of fats, usually due to a lack of bile. It has a treatment available by the veterinarian if your dog has contracted it. Coccidia, which also causes diarrhea in dogs, is a different parasite and has a different treatment than giardia. Canines can contract this parasite via contact with infected feces, or sometimes from their mother. That doesn't mean the breeder or shelter wasn't clean, just that coccidia is a sneaky and resilient parasite. Coccidia is often carried by birds and passes in their droppings onto lawns, parking lots, and other areas of the flyover. It's highly recommended to watch what your Boxer is doing. Don't let them eat feces, sniff or lick at it. Protect them from puddles and melting ice. A few other parasites that can cause diarrhea in puppies, or in some cases adult canines, are roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and threadworms. Ingesting something they are sensitive to: A canine's palate isn't the same as ours. Some dogs think that garbage, trash, decaying leaves, dead mice or birds, plants, and grasses are all things meant to be eaten. And, these can all upset the digestive system or be mildly to severely toxic. Infection and diseases: A lot of acute cases of diarrhea with dogs are caused by a minor bacterial infection that runs its course over a couple of days and then resolves. However, there are other more serious issues that can be at play. This includes: Campylobacteria, seen most often with young pups up to 6 months old. Diagnosing this includes blood testing, urinalysis, stool testing, and other tests. Antibiotics, corticosteroids, and medications to protect the lining of the intestines may be given. In many cases, a change to a different food which includes a switch in both protein and carb sources can help. Other less common but possible reasons for diarrhea include kidney disease, liver disease, cancer , lymphangiectasia, pancreatitis, and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Elements to Help Decipher Diarrhea Issues Color, smell, and consistency are all clues: Tarry, sticky black stools can point to upper GI bleeding and warrants an immediate vet visit. Red or red spotting in stools often points to bleeding in the lower GI tract. In those cases, the blood can be coming from small tears or rips in the anus. Yellow or green loose stools. With a puppy, yellow can point to coccidia. Otherwise, yellow or green indicates that food is passing through too quickly to digest completely. Gray can point to a liver-related issue. Foam seen in the diarrhea tends to point to a bacterial infection. Greasy diarrhea can mean the pancreas is having a problem. Give the stomach a break. If diarrhea is moderate to severe, you can withhold food for 24 hours. Do give supplements ; see below. Keep your Boxer hydrated. A lot of water is lost even with one episode of diarrhea. When the ability to drink fluids fast enough to compensate for the water loss is insufficient, dehydration can result. This is of particular concern for Boxer puppies and senior Boxer dogs, but is applicable to dogs of all ages. Try some organic chicken broth. After 12 to 24 hours, start your Boxer on a bland diet. This is typically just 1 protein and 1 starch. One of the most tolerated combinations is plain, white, skinless chicken breast diced small and plain white rice or plain oatmeal. After 3 days, start to transition back to a regular diet or a new, better food if that was decided. By then, the body should be well-rested. Extra Tips What about Pepto Bismol? This is safe to give to most dogs. However, check with your vet. Some recommend not giving this, in order to allow the body to expel stools as it needs to. But, in some cases, if a dog, especially a puppy, is overwhelmingly stressed, and this can help control diarrhea to some degree. Do not give this to a Boxer that is pregnant or to any dog that is allergic to silicates. The typical dosing is 1 teaspoon for each 20 pounds. You can use this every 6 hours for up to 48 hours. Your vet may suggest a slightly stronger dose. Altering sleeping or living arrangements. When you have to go, you have to go, and your Boxer can't always get there in time. If that is happening to your Boxer puppy, pee pads placed over the floor of a pen or gated off area are a blessing. During this time avoid additional stress for your Boxer. At this time, Boxers don't need playtime with small children; it burns energy, and their reserves are low when dealing with diarrhea. Sore Rear-ends. Puppies and dogs can have red, irritated behinds from the change in acidity from diarrhea. They may lick their behind due to the irritation which only exacerbates the problem. Some of the conditions that afflict Boxers have a genetic basis, and are more likely to happen to Boxers than to dogs of other breeds. Responsible breeders screen for these conditions, and when possible, avoid breeding dogs with those traits. But these conditions can still happen. Boxers are more likely to develop health problems such as heart problems, degenerative myelopathy, bloat, and ulcerative colitis than other dogs. Boxer Cardiomyopathy Boxers are more likely to develop a specific heart condition than other dogs. The condition, Boxer cardiomyopathy , is actually named after the breed, though other dogs can develop it. The most common sign a dog has Boxer cardiomyopathy is if it has trouble breathing. Your dog might cough or wheeze frequently. Your dog might start panting during walks or playtime. If you think your dog might have Boxer cardiomyopathy, you should avoid exercise until the dog can be examined by its veterinarian. Eventually the weakness will be more apparent, with loss of bowel and urinary control. The dog might struggle to get up because the disease also causes muscle atrophy.
