Because the top inch or so of the strands of hair are either black or chocolate, at birth a sable Labradoodle will appear to be a black or chocolate dog. Once the strands start to grow out, the change color becomes visible. The amount of time it takes to see the second color varies from birth through to about six weeks of age. Since Labradoodles do not shed, at least as little as any dog is capable of not shedding, they do not generally grow new strands of hair. Labradoodle breeders will tell you that nose leather color is key to coat color. The other Labradoodle nose color is black. Labradoodles labelled as caramel will always have brown noses, not black ones. If you see a brownish Labradoodle with a black nose, it will be either red, apricot, or cream, depending on the shade. A caramel Labradoodle can have a solid coat with that classic caramel candy color, but there are also plenty of variations in caramel coloring as well as coat markings to choose from. This lightning is not unique to Labradoodles. Coat color changes, like color itself, are also due to genetics. There is a gene that is often called the progressive greying gene or the Poodle fading gene that causes coat color to lighten in Poodles. This greying gene can be inherited in some Labradoodles. There is also a different gene that causes dilute pale coat color in dogs, but the color will be light at the start and will not fade gradually. Avoid getting your puppy from a pet store or online ad, as many of these dogs come from commercial breeding operations known as puppy mills. Apricot: Born with a lighter color coat, similar to the caramel colored Labradoodle, that darkens over time. Their nose pigment color is typically black. Apricot Cream: With apricot colored ears, these Labradoodles have a lightly shaded coat. The color is usually warm cream with black nose pigment. Red: The rarest color of Labradoodle coat shades, these pups have a black nose pigment. They are also the hardest to breed. Cream: When born, these Labradoodles are slightly darker. Later they turn to a warm cream color. The nose pigment is black or rose colored. Raven Black: Born in a black coat, these Labradoodles have black nose pigment with shiny eyes. Sometimes their coat color can turn more of a silvery color over time. Light Blue: These Labradoodles are like black. You either have Black or Liver pigment. The liver pigment can also be called Brown or Chocolate. The pigment is the determining factor between a Caramel dog and a Red dog with the same coat color. The easiest way to determine the color of a dog is to look at its nose. Is it Black or is it Liver, Brown, or Chocolate? It is very common for a dog that looks to be red based on its fur to be called a red dog, but in fact, it is a caramel because it has a Liver or Brown nose. If this is confusing you are not alone; Many times people get coat colors and patterns confused. The nose is!! Who knew the nose was so important?!? This can be very confusing to the novice breeder or pet owner. One of the most common mistakes is the example given above for the Red vs. Caramel dog. As a breeder understanding the genetics not only for health but also for what outcome you will get for each mating is extremely important in what we do. More on that later. This is meant as a quick basic guide to getting your feet wet or pointed in the right direction on what color is that dog! Education is key. Do your homework and be patient. It matters!!! This color can do some interesting things! It can fade into at least three distinct, official Labradoodle colors! Go figure!! I have had one of my chocolate girls turn completely Lavender on her body but not the head, then within a year, go completely back to dark chocolate. So, like a good Boy Scout, when you purchase a chocolate Labradoodle, be prepared for anything! All are lovely, but they are almost impossible to predict with any significant degree of accuracy. Once again, be prepared for anything! Chocolate Colors Now we get to the fun part; the color combinations! This is where things get interesting. Partis can come in any color, with either color nose. Some are mostly white, while some have lots of color and less white. The ones that are mostly white are called "Extreme" Partis. The variations are endless and unique, like a snowflake. The colors, such as chocolate, on a parti can change in the same ways that they would on a solid dog. Often confused with "Parti" is a dog with heavy white mismarks or a Tuxedo. White mismarks can be very small or very heavy, or anywhere in-between. The puppy is born either Black or Chocolate and immediately begins to lose the dark color, revealing anything from a cream to a red underneath! The tips of the fur may retain their dark cast, but the dog will present as somewhere on the cream-red spectrum. I have included her picture below showing her in the middle of the changing process. Friday, March 16, Puppy Surprise by Playskool I am going to veer away from my normal doll talk to share two things with you. First, an awesome toy called Puppy Surprise. Remember how I mentioned a while back about how much I like surprises? Well, this toy is perfect for me. It's perfect for a lot of kids in the year old range, too, in my experience. I think I have bought one of these for almost every kid I know in that age range. What is Puppy Surprise? It is a plush dog who is pregnant stuffed with removable puppies. The surprise is, you don't know how many puppies she has until you open the box and the dog. She could have anywhere from 2 to 4 puppies, and if she has 4, one of them is likely to be a runt. It's awesome. The puppies are also gendered, so you don't know if you're going to get boys or girls.In the early 90s, Hasbro made a similar toy, also called Puppy Surprise, but these dogs had vinyl faces. The older toys are also still available on eBay, but they tend to command higher prices, especially if the set is complete and in good shape. I like both versions, but slightly prefer the newer ones because they are all plush. A few years ago, when these started to go on clearance, I hoarded a ton of them so I could give them away as gifts. I have a few left over. Let's have some fun with them! Playskool Puppy Surprise discontinued. The dogs are about 9 inches tall and come in a fairly simple window box. The box emphasizes the surprise element, which works like a charm to get me to shell out my money: I hope it's 4! I need to know!! The chances of having a boy are 1 in 6. Those are good odds for the fellas. Each mother dog has a pattern on her cheek called a "Pretty Patch. This way, if you have lots of these dogs, you can always reunite a mother with her original puppies by matching the patches. The gender of the puppies is indicated by the lining of their ears. If the lining is pink they're overheated girls, if it is blue, they're holding their breath boys. There are lots of different colors and styles of dog to choose from. I have seen purple poodles, pink poodles, black and white spotted dogs, pink and white spotted ones with fluffy ears, cream ones with fluffy ears, pure white ones, tan and pink ones.Playskool also made some different animals, like cats and rabbits. This one is a bit drab. She was on a massive clearance sale: You have to wrestle her out of three wire ties, and that's it. Let's get right to that part. The puppies are in the dog's belly, which opens and closes with velcro. It's nicely done and the dog has enough stuffing to be cuddly even without the puppies. Of course you can't tell how many puppies there are inside until you open her up. My kids and I used to hold every single box in the store and try to tell from the weight which ones had the most puppies. Here is the exciting moment! I happen to have another one: This is my favorite out of all of the colors. She reminds me of my very first dog: She has a different Pretty Patch: Here we go! When our dogs play with an interactive toy, it: Fires up their minds Activates and heightens all of their senses Busts boredom yes, dogs can get bored too Improves mood Tires them out Helps to prevent certain behavior problems. What Is a Busy Box? Also called an enrichment box, foraging box, or destruction box, a busy box is a super simple DIY interactive puzzle. You start with a basic cardboard box and then fill it with dog toys and random stuff lying around your home particularly things you can hide treats in! Before we take a closer look at busy box stuffing ideas, I want to say a big thank you to my friend Tori, founder of WearWagRepeat. We recently did an Instagram Live together where she introduced me to this genius idea. You can use an old soda can box, LaCroix box, cereal box, etc. It can be a squeaky toy or a crinkle toy. Balls — If your dog loves tennis balls or Hol-ee balls then add that to the box too! Treat-Filled Towel — Grab a clean washcloth or dish towel and roll treats inside. Loose Treats — To sprinkle in the box! Stuff the box with goodies. Use the list of ideas I mentioned above and get creative with your own! Sprinkle a few loose treats into the box. Lightly close the top of the box. Give it to your dog to rip open, forage through, and play with!
